TikTok introduces ‘Stitch’ that allows users to sample other videos

0

Even as the fate of its US operations hangs in balance amid negotiations with potential buyers, TikTok has not stopped rolling out new tools. The latest to debut is an editing feature called Stitch which allows users the ability to clip and integrate scenes from another user’s video into their own.

Like another feature called “Duet,” Stitch provides users a way to reinterpret and add to another user’s content, building on their stories, tutorials, recipes, math lessons, and more, TikTok said on Thursday.

Users can decide in their settings whether or not others can Stitch their content, just the way it works with Duet.

The option can be accessed on the Privacy and Safety page under “Settings and Privacy,” where users can enable or disable Stitch for all videos.

The option can also be toggled for each individual video uploaded.

Every video made with Stitch attributes the original creator in the new video’s caption, and the caption attribution links directly to the original, clipped video, the short video-sharing platform owned by Chinese unicorn ByteDance said.

The platform on Thursday also introduced TikTok For Business Marketing Partner Programme to extend capabilities for marketers to express themselves creatively and connect with the TikTok community.

“With the launch of TikTok For Business, we’re building new opportunities for marketers to be creative storytellers and meaningfully engage with the TikTok community,” Melissa Yang, Head of Ecosystem Partnerships, TikTok, said in a statement.

TikTok is facing the threat of a ban from the Donald Trump administration in the US unless it quickly divests its operations in the country.

Microsoft, in partnership with Walmart, and Oracle have reportedly emerged as top contenders for the deal.

Will take up GST cut demand with FM, PM: Javadekar

0

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Prakash Javadekar on Friday assured the automobile industry that he will take up the industry’s demand for a cut in goods and services tax (GST) for the sector with the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister.

Speaking at the virtual Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the minister said that the industry will get some concessions going ahead to boost demand, especially the festival demand.

He noted that any decision on the GST cut will require the GST Council to take into account the socio-economic impact of the decision.

Citing the ongoing issue of the GST compensation, which the Centre has been unable to pay to the states, he said that as already revenues are very low, such decisions on rate cut would have to be thoroughly looked into.

“I hope you will get some good news soon,” he said.

As the pandemic has worsened the demand scenario of India’s automobile segment, which was already going through a slowdown in the past year or so, industry players have been seeking support from the government to push demand in the form of tax cuts.

Recently, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said that the GST Council will look into the proposal of lowering the GST on two-wheelers, which neither come under luxury nor sin goods.

J&J Covid vax prevents severe clinical illness in hamsters

0

A leading candidate of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by global healthcare company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) prevented the severe illness — including weight loss, pneumonia, and death in a small group of Syrian golden hamsters.

The vaccine — developed through a collaboration between Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and J&J — uses a common cold virus, called adenovirus serotype 26 (Ad26), to deliver the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein into host cells, where it stimulates the body to raise immune responses against the coronavirus.

BIDMC immunologist Dan H Barouch and J&J developed a series of vaccine candidates designed to express different variants of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which is the major target for neutralizing antibodies.

“We recently reported that an Ad26-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccine provided robust protection in rhesus macaques, and this vaccine is currently being evaluated in humans,” said Barouch.

“However, nonhuman primates typically don’t get the severe clinical disease, and thus it was important to study whether this vaccine could prevent severe pneumonia and death due to SARS-CoV-2 in hamsters, which are more susceptible to clinical disease,” Barouch added.

In the current study, the researchers immunized Syrian golden hamsters with a single injection of the Ad26-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, which induced neutralizing antibodies in all animals.

Four weeks later, the animals were exposed to a high dose of SARS-CoV-2.

Vaccinated animals lost less weight and had less virus in their lungs and other organs than unvaccinated control animals. Vaccinated animals also demonstrated lower mortality.

Moreover, the researchers found that neutralizing antibody responses were inversely correlated with weight loss and viral loads in respiratory tissues.

The ‘Ad26.COV2.S’ vaccine is currently being evaluated in clinical studies to establish the performance of the vaccine candidate in humans.

“This hamster model of severe Covid-19 disease should prove useful to complement current non-human primate models in the evaluation of candidate vaccines and therapeutics,” said Barouch.

In July, J&J experimental vaccine raised neutralizing antibodies and robustly protected monkeys against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

“Pending clinical trial outcomes, the Ad26.COV2.S vaccine is on track to start a phase 3 efficacy trial in up to 60,000 participants in September,” the team wrote.

IPL 13: With no fresh Covid cases, CSK to start training

0

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will start their training from Friday ahead of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after all their players, except the two infected with coronavirus, tested negative for Covid-19 in their latest round of testing.

Sources in the know of development confirmed to IANS that all players and support staff, who underwent their third round of testing on Thursday, have returned negative and will start training from Friday evening.

Last week, two players and 11 others of the CSK contingent had tested positive for the novel coronavirus and were subsequently put in isolation. They will undergo test after completing their mandatory 14-day isolation period. They need to return with two negative tests before being allowed to train.

The Chennai-based franchise is the last to start with their training as all other franchises have been sweating it out on the field since the start of this week.

The three-time champions have already lost veteran batsman Suresh Raina who has opted out of the tournament due to personal reasons. Meanwhile, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh’s availability is also doubtful for the season slated to start to be played September 19 to November 10 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Faster high-res image transmission soon on iPhone cameras: Report

0

Apple’s iPhone cameras in the future may adopt circuit boards based on liquid crystal polymer (LCP), in order to allow them to transmit high-resolution images at higher speeds.

According to a DigiTimes report, liquid crystal polymer printed circuit board (LCP PCB) may be adopted in iPhone camera lens modules in the future to support high-speed image transmission.

“Image data will be increasingly complicated in the 5G era and high-speed transmission will be needed to allow high-resolution images in live streaming and AR applications,” the report added.

This year, iPhone 12 models are expected to support mmWave but currently, it is not clear on when Apple’s iPhones are expected to include LCP-based camera module PCBs capable of faster image transmission.

Apple is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series which would include two premium variants.

iPhone 12 Pro will come in 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch sizes and may feature a high refresh-rate 120Hz ProMotion display, as presently seen on iPad Pro.

All four iPhone models are expected to feature OLED displays and 5G support.

Erdogan, Merkel discuss East Med tension

0

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held virtual talks on regional affairs, particularly the latest tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“During the video conference on Thursday, President Erdogan reiterated his commitment to a fair allocation (of energy resources), whereby the rights of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean would be protected, and which would serve the interests of all littoral states,” said a statement by the Turkish Presidential Communications Office.

Erdogan accused Greece, the Greek Cypriots, and the states supporting them of having been taking steps to escalate the tension, Xinhua news agency reported citing the statement as saying.

The President welcomed Merkel’s efforts to contribute to the solution of the problem “that has been caused by recent steps by Greece and its supporters, which undermined regional peace”, it added

Athens and Ankara have been at odds over hydrocarbon rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Earlier last month, Turkey dispatched its seismic survey vessel, Oruc Reis, escorted by Turkish warships to the area after Greece and Egypt signed a maritime border agreement.

Greece, which has called on Ankara to withdraw its vessels from the area, also deployed warships to monitor the Turkish activities there.

Cricket astronauts under pressure

0

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a tournament that cricket lovers are eagerly looking forward to. Although the Caribbean Premier League is already on in the West Indies, the cricket world has its eyes on the superlative cricket property of the Indian cricket board (BCCI). Dream11 (Sports Technologies Pvt.Ltd), a fantasy sports platform that has been one of the outstanding recent success stories, quite understandably outbid the others to become the title sponsor after the exit of Vivo. The company was already a part of India’s cricket story as one of the sponsors of the BCCI and also had played a major part in the 2019 IPL.

India’s iconic cricket captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as well as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rishab Pant, are among Dream11’s brand ambassadors. Having a battery of such an elite cricket line-up, it was only prudent for them to wear the IPL crown. The BCCI may not have got the full value of the IPL title sponsorship that they would have liked to in financial terms, but given the uncertainty that everyone is facing currently due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the BCCI must be happy to have got a substantial winning bid.

Unfortunately, the first casualty that the IPL faced, even before the tournament began, was when 13 members of the Chennai Super Kings tested positive for coronavirus. Although, they have been quarantined for two weeks, the thought of the virus striking even after the members had tested negative before leaving India has put all the other cricketers under pressure.

‘Cricket Astronauts’, as one can refer to them, with the protected PPE suits and face masks, etc must be mentally very worrying. They need to get cricket started at one end for their own benefit, but to do so, they also require to take a substantial risk to avoid the dreaded virus.

It is a situation that people defending their nations internally and externally are trained for, and are mentally prepared to handle, but not the cricketers playing for passion and fun. One has to admire the fact that most of the players and the support staff have not backed out of what could have been a good reason to do so. It is collective efforts like these that will keep the game flourishing in the future as well. One hopes and prays that all goes as planned and that every person associated with the IPL keeps himself vigilant and disciplined to ensure that the virus remains contained.

The franchises are finding innovative ways of keeping their loyal supporters abreast of videos of their teams’ activities and practice on the field. One was amused to see that the conservative way of batting in the nets of getting a feel of the wicket and conditions has given way to batsmen striking the ball from the very first delivery. One has seen this before and it always bewilders one as to whether a batsman out in the middle will play in such a rash manner from the first ball he faces.

The T20 format needs subtle placement and wrist play as much as the big-hitting. Somehow, this elementary thought gets blinded by the heroic appreciation of a mighty six. Cricket may have been shortened to suit the palate of today’s impatient viewers, but the success stories are of batsmen who have the skill and the art to find the correct placement in their defense and stroke-play. In the preceding four years, the batsmen who headed the run charts were Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and David Warner, who achieved it twice. This clearly shows that skill and intelligence are a far better bet than sheer brawn, even in the shorter format of the game.

The two areas of cricket that make T20 interesting are bowling and fielding. The conditions are so much in favor of batsmen that bowlers have to continuously innovate. They need to out-think the batsman with their direction and restrictive field placements. At times, one feels sorry for a helpless bowler, but when they do bamboozle the batsman, there is an element of admiration for them. Similarly, the out-fielding has improved by leaps and bounds. This is solely because the fitness levels of the present cricketers, under continuous observation and dietary regime, are making them well turned-out athletes.

One of the most concerning things to read about is how some of the top present-day cricketers have developed anxiety and concern about their game. The five months of being away from the game due to the Covid-19 pandemic apparently brought about an uncertainty that the cricketers had never faced before. One wonders as to how in the earlier days an Indian cricketer confronted the same issue as the gap between the end of one cricket season and the start of another was around five months. Some fortunate cricketers did get overseas club contracts to play, mainly over the weekend, whereas the monsoon cricket leagues would surface gradually at major cities as the rains subsided. This too was mostly played on Sundays. A cricketer, therefore, had to keep himself fit playing indoor games as their cricket kit was kept aside for the season to follow. A month or so of practice was all that one got before the start of the first-class domestic season, and with limited matches at stake one got into the groove very quickly.

Therefore, it was nice to learn that the three majestic stroke players in Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and AB de Villiers were happy with their initial outing. One never doubted it. But it would have put them at ease if they had just spoken to some of the legends, who always seemed to continue with their stupendous form from where they left off the season before. Let us wish that the trio does so in a similar fashion. Cricket will then be a treat to watch!

Tour de France: Alexey Lutsenko wins stage 6

0

Alexey Lutsenko took the spoils on Mont Aigoual in stage 6 of the Tour de France as Adam Yates retained the yellow jersey on a day of attrition for the race favorites.

Kazakh champion Lutsenko (Astana) proved the strongest of an eight-man break during the 191km-stage to the Massif Central, kicking clear on the penultimate climb of the Col de la Lucette to take the first Tour stage win of his career.

Spain’s Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) battled back for second place, 55 seconds behind before Belgium’s Greg van Avermaet (CCC Team) denied the US’s Neilson Powless (EF Pro Cycling) third place on his 24th birthday.

A symbolic attack on the home straight from Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) saw the Frenchman recoup one second over his rivals following the controversial 20-second penalty he incurred for an illegal feed on Wednesday to lose the yellow jersey.
The pack came home in Alaphilippe’s wake almost three minutes down on Lutsenko as the expected GC fireworks fizzled out on the Tour’s first-ever summit finish on Mont Aigoual, the climb made famous by Tim Krabbe’s seminal novel, The Rider.

Yates survived what was Britain’s 101st day in yellow unscathed as his Mitchelton-Scott team was happy to take a back seat and let the Ineos Grenadiers of Colombia’s Egan Bernal do much of the tempo-setting during the hilly final third of the stage.

No change at the top sees Yates retain his three-second lead over Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), with another Slovenian, the white jersey of Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), in third place a further four seconds back. Frenchman Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) is fourth at nine seconds before defending champion Bernal heads a cluster of favorites at 13 seconds, with Alaphilippe staying in 16th place but now at 15 seconds from the race summit.

Ireland’s Sam Bennett put in another strong showing in the intermediate sprint to extend his lead over Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) to 12 points, while Frenchman Benoit Cosnefroy (Ag2R-La Mondiale) retained the polka dot jersey.

“It’s probably the most important victory of my life. The Tour de France is the most important cycling event every year so it makes me really, really happy. It went just about as well as it could’ve done. I’ve been working really hard to get this stage victory. It was a stage we targeted and I’m delighted it all came to fruition because all of my efforts paid off and obviously that’s brilliant,” Lutsenko said.

FB to list all WhatsApp security bugs on dedicated web page

0

As cybersecurity incidents increase in its family of apps, Facebook has launched a new web page where it will document all vulnerabilities and bugs reported and fixed in WhatsApp.

The new WhatsApp web page with security advisories will let users and security researchers know when Facebook patched a major security hole.

The advisory page provides a comprehensive list of WhatsApp security updates and associated Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE).

The ‘WhatsApp Security Advisories 2020′ updates currently list six vulnerabilities that were found and patched in its Android, Desktop, and video call services.

“We are very committed to transparency and this resource is intended to help the broader technology community benefit from the latest advances in our security efforts,” Facebook said.

“We strongly encourage all users to ensure they keep their WhatsApp up-to-date from their respective app stores and update their mobile operating systems whenever updates are available”.

In 2016, Facebook completed the rollout of end-to-end encryption utilizing the Signal Protocol designed by Open Whisper Systems.

“We do not store private messages on our servers once we deliver them, and for additional security, we provide two-step verification to protect against unauthorized account access.

“If you lose access to your WhatsApp account, the messages you previously received will remain on your phone and will not be available elsewhere,” Facebook explained.

Facebook is working with leading security firms to conduct reviews of its practices and code and engage external researchers through the Bug Bounty Programme to help it find and fix security issues.

“Due to the policies and practices of app stores, we cannot always list security advisories within app release notes,” the social network said.

Facebook currently publishes WhatsApp release notes on the iOS and Google Play Store pages.

WBBL 6 to be held entirely in Sydney amid Covid-19 challenges

0

Cricket Australia has confirmed that the full 59-game season of the sixth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will be hosted in Sydney, beginning October 25.

In a statement, Cricket Australia said on Friday that it is working in partnership with the New South Wales government to ensure the competition proceeds in line with government regulations and Covid-19 safety guidelines.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s head of Big Bash Leagues, said: “We want to thank the NSW government for their willingness to work together to deliver the WBBL|06 competition in Sydney.”

“We are incredibly proud to deliver a full season of rebel WBBL|06 and would like to thank the NSW government, our partner’s states & territories associations, the Australian Cricketers’ Association as well as- in particular Cricket NSW – for rallying together at this challenging time to deliver a safe and successful tournament.

“We can achieve great things together and the spirit of cooperation has been truly uplifting,” he added.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said he was thrilled the full 59-game season of the rebel WBBL 6 will be hosted in NSW delivering a full summer of cricket to loyal fans.

“The Women’s Big Bash League is back in Sydney. It’s been a tough time for our communities and there’s nothing like a season of cricket to boost morale and entertain,” Barilaro said.

Acting Minister for Sports Geoff Lee said Sydney is ready to welcome the WBBL 6 with open arms.

“This competition continues to grow from strength to strength. The quality of the talent is on the rise and the action is thrilling to watch,” said Lee.

“What stands out most is the great example these women are setting to young girls aspiring to play the game of cricket. I can’t wait to watch the best walkout for the Women’s Big Bash League in Sydney.”

Sydney has featured strongly in the short history of the WBBL, hosting the first sold-out final at Drummoyne Oval in the fourth edition of the tournament and the first ‘festival weekend’ in the third edition.

Last season marked the first time WBBL was played as a standalone competition, taking the league to a bigger national and international audience than ever before.

“The ICC Women’s World Cup final will forever be an iconic moment in our game’s history, and we are committed to carrying that momentum into the season ahead,” Dobson said.

“The likes of Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, and Beth Mooney have become household names in Australia and it will be brilliant watching them showcasing their talent and skills for their respective clubs this summer.

“Meg and Beth are among those to change clubs in the off-season, adding another dimension of excitement and expectation to the league.

“We will also be working closely with Australian and state governments to allow top-quality international players to enter our borders and join our clubs.”

Google Maps using DeepMind AI to predict your arrival time

0

As people traverse over 1 billion km with help from Google Maps in more than 220 countries, the company is using artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning (ML) models to predict whether the traffic along your route is heavy or light, an estimated travel time, and the estimated time of arrival (ETA).

Google has partnered with DeepMind, an Alphabet AI research lab, to improve the accuracy of its traffic prediction capabilities.

“Our ETA predictions already have a very high accuracy bar – in fact, we see that our predictions have been consistently accurate for over 97 percent of trips,” said Johann Lau, Product Manager, Google Maps.

By partnering with DeepMind, Google has been able to cut the percentage of inaccurate ETAs even further by using an ML architecture known as Graph Neural Networks.

“This technique is what enables Google Maps to better predict whether or not you’ll be affected by a slowdown that may not have even started yet,” Lau said in a statement on Thursday.

To predict what traffic will look like in the near future, Google Maps analyzes historical traffic patterns for roads over time.

“We then combine this database of historical traffic patterns with live traffic conditions, using machine learning to generate predictions based on both sets of data,” Lau said.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, traffic patterns around the globe have shifted dramatically.

“We saw up to a 50 percent decrease in worldwide traffic when lockdowns started in early 2020,” Lau informed.

To account for this sudden change, Google has updated its models to become more agile — automatically prioritizing historical traffic patterns from the last two to four weeks and deprioritizing patterns from any time before that.

The predictive traffic models are also a key part of how Google Maps determines driving routes.

“If we predict that traffic is likely to become heavy in one direction, we’ll automatically find you a lower-traffic alternative. We also look at a number of other factors, like road quality,” Google said.

Two other sources of information are important to making sure Google recommends the best routes — authoritative data from local governments and real-time feedback from users.

Authoritative data lets Google Maps know about speed limits, tolls, or if certain roads are restricted due to things like construction or Covid-19.

“And incident reports from drivers let Google Maps quickly show if a road or lane is closed, if there’s construction nearby, or if there’s a disabled vehicle or an object on the road,” Google added.

Twitter to add automated captions to audio, video by early 2021

0

Twitter is working on adding automated captions to audio and video by early 2021, a feature that would help people with disabilities access the service in a much meaningful way.

The micro-blogging platform earlier tested voice Tweets to make its platform more inclusive for the disabled community.

“We’ve partnered with external groups and over the coming months, we’ll be gathering feedback from people with disabilities via interviews, surveys, and doing remote usability studies of new prototypes,” said Product Lead Kayvon Beykpour and Dalana Brand, VP of People Experience.

While this is underway, Twitter said it will continue to test related media features.

In a blog post this week, the company announced to introduce two new divisions – the Accessibility Center of Excellence and the Experience Accessibility Team, which will focus specifically on the features and products on Twitter.

The Accessibility Center for Excellence will set goals, drive progress, consult, and partner with groups across our core business functions to help make aspects of Twitter more accessible.

“The Experience Accessibility Team will work within our product org on new and existing features and products, providing resources and tools that promote greater accessibility on the service,” Beykpour said.

The new feature is an extension of voice tweets.

While voice tweets were accessible by everyone on the platform, the company only allowed a small group of iOS users to create them.

Google urges Europe to create responsible, helpful Internet

0

Google has said that it is important that regulation keeps pace with change and the company supports Europe’s effort to create a more responsible, innovative, and helpful Internet for everyone.

As the deadline to submit responses to the new European Digital Services Act (DSA) ends on September 8, the tech giant said that creating a more responsible, innovative, and helpful internet is a societal challenge.

“We acknowledge the need for companies, governments, and civil society to work together towards reaching our shared goals. That’s why we support modernizing rules for the digital age,” Kent Walker, SVP of Global Affairs at Google, said in a blog post on Thursday.

Apple is also changing how it pays developer fees on the App Store in the UK. The move came after countries including the UK, France, Italy, and Turkey implemented digital services levies, which force tech giants to pay more taxes, reports the CNBC.

Last month, Amazon also said it was increasing charges on sellers after the UK government approved its digital tax.

Walker said that the Google response focuses on three key areas.

“A more responsible internet, a more innovative internet, and a more helpful internet,” he said.

“In order to ensure that fundamental rights are respected, it’s important for the DSA to focus on capturing illegal content, so lawful speech isn’t caught in the net.

“However, this should not prevent further actions on lawful-but-harmful content, such as cyber-bullying, through self- and co-regulatory initiatives, such as the EU Code of Practice on Disinformation and the EU Code of Conduct on Hate Speech, both of which Google joined from the start,” he explained.

“The DSA should support constructive transparency measures while ensuring that platforms can continue to protect user privacy, ensure commercially sensitive information is not revealed and prevent bad actors from gaming the system”.

To foster innovation, the DSA should reflect the wide range of services offered by the tech industry.

“No two services are the same and the new act should be rooted in objectives and principles that can be applied, as appropriate, across this broad, diverse ecosystem,” Walker said.

“New rules should encourage new and improved features and products which help European consumers get things done and access information quickly and easily”.

As new rules are being evaluated, he said, the question is not whether data mobility or data access should be facilitated, but “how to achieve their benefits without sacrificing product quality or innovation incentives”.

TV star Nishant Malkani: Immoral to seek publicity through Sushant’s death

Telly star Nishant Malkani worked closely with late actor Sushant Singh Rajput in their early days as actors on the small screen. Nishant says he has refrained from commenting on Sushant Singh Rajput or his death so far because many people have looked at it as a way of getting publicity.

“I did not like to comment in the beginning, because initially, people were speaking about his death just for publicity, and I don’t think that’s good. It is immoral in my eyes to seek publicity through someone’s death. But now that the initial fever is over, only the real genuine people can come out and share their thoughts about Sushant,” claimed Nishant.

Nishant played the lead role of Anukalp Gandhi in “Preet Se Bandhi Ye Dori Ram Milaayi Jodi” around the same time as Sushant was becoming a household name playing Manav Deshmukh in “Pavitra Rishta”. Both the shows were aired on the same channel.

“Sushant and I were a part of Zee TV in 2010 and 2011. My show used to air at 9 pm while he was at 9.30 pm. We did a lot of ‘maha’ episodes and events together and thus interacted during shoots. I knew him during that period. Later, I quit Zee TV and he also quit television for films, so we lost touch. But what I remember is that he was a humble, hardworking, and talented guy. He was somebody who would take charge of a scene and deliver it the way the writers wanted,” Nishant recalled.

The CBI is currently investigating Sushant’s case now and Nishant asserts that the guilty should be punished.

“Forget about being an industry colleague, I think as a human being I feel that if someone took his life then the culprit needs to come out and should be punished,” he said.

Nishant also spoke about actress Kangana Ranaut and her gutsy attitude while taking a stand in Sushant’s case. “I think most of the time, Kangana says the right thing in a blunt manner, because of which many people do not like her. But I respect her and I think she is saying all the right things and is also throwing light on the problems in the industry. I admire her for that and look up to her,” said Nishant.

CPL 2020: Title defense ends as Warriors skittle Tridents

0

Barbados Tridents’ stuttering defense of their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title finally ended as they again failed to make three figures against a well-balanced Guyana Amazon Warriors attack in the ongoing edition of the T20 league.

Early boundaries from Chandrapaul Hemraj meant Shimron Hetmyer and Ross Taylor could take the team home in cruise control and the Amazon Warriors ended the league stage on a roll with four wins from four at the Brian Lara Stadium on Thursday.

Earlier, Romario Shepherd provided Amazon Warriors — who opted to bowl — with a promising start with two wickets in two balls. Johnson Charles (10) chipped tamely to Taylor at the point, but there was nothing tame about the dismissal of pinch-hitter Rashid Khan as a fierce pull was brilliantly caught by Brandon King who ran 20 yards to his left from deep square leg and dived full-length.

Opener Justin Greaves survived the hat-trick ball and then closed the over with a four. Shamarh Brooks hit a four off Imran Tahir but fell softly to Chris Green, albeit with Taylor taking a good catch at short midwicket, and the Tridents ended the powerplay on 28/3. That became 28/4 the very next ball when Tahir bowled Greaves, beating him all ends up with a googly.

Kyle Mayers launched a straight six off Kevin Sinclair but was undone by wrist-spin again, skying a Tahir googly to give Hemraj an easy catch at mid-off. The implosion continued as Tridents captain Jason Holder gifted Green a catch at midwicket off the second ball after the drinks break and a second poor batting effort in a row by the Tridents against the Amazon Warriors left them reeling at 39/6 after 11 overs.

Mitchell Santner and Nyeem Young milked Sinclair for eight and while Naveen-ul-Haq went for just one on his return, Young ended a 37-ball boundary drought with a maximum over off Green. Santner pulled Shepherd for four and after 15 overs, the Tridents were 65/6. Sinclair ended the mini-recovery, bowling Santner with a quicker ball and celebrating by adding an extra flip or two to his post-wicket routine.

Tridents kept on losing wickets and ultimately for the third time in this year’s CPL, they failed to make three figures as a team and ended their 20 overs at 89/9.

Warriors didn’t have a great start in their chase as Santner struck on the first ball, bowling King with an arm ball that in effect swung into the right-hander. A tight over from Holder then ensured Hemraj started slowly but the latter got himself going with a powerful slog-swept six and a whipped four off Santner. However, he should have fallen to the New Zealander had Hayden Walsh Jr not dropped a catch. After that, Hemraj continued his attack off Rashid with two fours and a six. After four overs, the Warriors were 34/1 and the required run rate was just three and a half per over.

In the fifth over, Holder cleverly angled the ball across Hemraj, who couldn’t resist a pull shot and was well caught by Young at the third man after scoring 29 runs. Sherfane Rutherford, in for the rested Keemo Paul, got a promotion to four, but lasted only three balls before edging Holder to Ashley Nurse at slip. Holder took a heavy fall but completed a wicket-maiden, leaving the Warriors 40/3 after seven overs.

Hetmyer started watchfully, his first boundary not coming till his 12th ball and that too off an edge past new keeper Charles. Nicholas Pooran (0) faced five dot balls and tried to get off the mark with a boundary, but toe-ended Reifer straight up in the air to give Brooks a simple catch at cover. Taylor joined Hetmyer with the score 49/4 and then tried to calm things.

Both batted intelligently and took the team home in the 15th over. While Hetmyer remained not out on 32, Taylor also scored unbeaten 16.

The Tridents now hold the unwanted record of being the first CPL defending champions not to make the knockouts, and with the Amazon Warriors now guaranteed to avoid the Trinbago Knight Riders in the semi-finals, a sixth final is very much on the cards.

Brief scores: Guyana Amazon Warriors 90/4 (Shimron Hetmyer 32*, Chandrapaul Hemraj 29; Jason Holder 2/10) beat Barbados Tridents 89/9 (Nyeem Young 18, Mitchell Santner 18; Imran Tahir 3/12) by 6 wickets.

Facebook paying users to deactivate their accounts before US polls

As part of a newly-launched study, Facebook is paying off people to deactivate their accounts on both its main platform and Instagram ahead of the US election in November.

The screenshots posted by The Washington Post on Thursday show an Instagram pop-up asking users to select how much money they would be willing to receive in order to deactivate their Instagram and Facebook accounts ahead of the election.

“So Facebook is now going to pay people to deactivate their IG and FB accounts before Election Day. It’s part of the research experiment announced Monday but WOW. This notice went out this week,” reporter Elizabeth Dwoskin tweeted.

Facebook is giving the options of $10, $15, and $20 per week.

Some users would be asked to deactivate their accounts for one week while others can be asked to leave the platform for up to six weeks.

Liz Bourgeois, a Facebook spokesperson, replied to Dwoskin’s tweet.

“Anyone who chooses to opt-in – whether it’s completing surveys or deactivating FB or IG for a period of time – will be compensated,” Bourgeois said in a tweet.

“This is fairly standard for this type of academic research.”

Earlier this week, the social networking giant announced a new research partnership to better understand the impact of Facebook and Instagram on key political attitudes and behaviors during the US 2020 election.

The research initiative will examine the impact of how people interact with Facebook and its products, including content shared in News Feed and across Instagram, and the role of features like content ranking systems.

The partnership is between Facebook researchers and independent external academics.

US stocks plunged, as a steep sell-off in tech shares dragged down the market.

On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 807.77 points, or 2.78 percent, to finish at 28,292.73. The 30-stock index shed more than 1,000 points, or about 3.5 percent, at the lows, Xinhua news agency reported.

The S&P 500 fell 125.78 points, or 3.51 percent, to end at 3,455.06. The Nasdaq Composite Index sank 598.34 points, or 4.96 percent, to 11,458.10.

Shares of Apple and Microsoft dived 8 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively, leading the laggards in the Dow.

Shares of other major US tech giants including Amazon, Netflix and Google-parent Alphabet also declined noticeably.

All the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors dipped, with technology down 5.8 percent, the worst-performing group.

US-listed Chinese companies traded lower, with all the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P US Listed China 50 index ending the day on a downbeat note.

On the data front, the US services Purchasing Managers’ Index dropped to 56.9 percent in August from the July reading of 58.1 percent, the Institute for Supply Management reported on Thursday, indicating a slower pace of growth.

US initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, fell to 881,000 in the week ending August 29, following an upwardly revised 1.01 million in the prior week, said the Department of Labor.

The decline in new claims mainly stemmed from a major change in seasonal adjustment methodology and the labor market showed little progress absent the change, according to analysts.
