TV actress Vaishnavi MacDonald: People don’t know I’m a certified nutritionist

Actress Vaishnavi MacDonald, a familiar face on the small screen, is also a certified nutritionist. She says health is a subject that has always interested her.

“A lot of people don’t know that I am a certified nutritionist. I was always interested in nutrition and health because I feel they are important, and in the current situation it is very well proved. When I got an opportunity, I did an extensive course and now I can even open a clinic. Even though I haven’t opened one yet, I try to practice with my close friends and family. It is always good to learn a new skill as it helps to keep your mind young,” she said.

Vaishnavi feels it is necessary to follow a healthy diet.

“According to me, having a spiritual outlook towards life is important too. It is necessary for your mind and soul to be healthy for your body to prosper. So your thought process, your imagination, and your positive outlook towards life matter a lot along with nutrition. Nutrition is not about what goes into your mouth but also what comes within you,” she said.

“I believe that little lifestyle changes can go a long way. If we make these small changes, it will help us in making a great shift from being unhealthy to healthy. It takes time for a habit to form but within some weeks you will find the difference,” added Vaishnavi, who plays the role of Surajmukhi in the television show, “Aye Mere Humsafar”.

Glacial lakes worldwide expanding fast since 1990: Study

0

The volume of glacial lakes worldwide has increased by about 50 percent since 1990 as glaciers melt and retreat due to climate change, show 30 years of NASA satellite data.

Lake Imja, a glacier lake near Mount Everest in the Himalaya has grown to three times its length since 1990, the research showed.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, can aid researchers in assessing the potential hazards to communities downstream of these often unstable lakes and help improve the accuracy of sea-level rise estimates.

“We have known that not all meltwater is making it into the oceans immediately,” said lead author Dan Shugar of the University of Calgary in Canada.

“But until now there was no data to estimate how much was being stored in lakes or groundwater.”

The study estimates current glacial lake volumes total about 156 cubic kilometers of water.

The international team of researchers initially planned to use satellite imaging and other remote-sensing data to study two dozen glacial lakes in High Mountain Asia, the geographic region that includes the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountain ranges, including the Himalaya.

The team ultimately analyzed more than 250,000 scenes from the Landsat satellite missions, a joint NASA/US Geological Survey programme.

The team looked at the data in five time-steps beginning with 1990 to examine all the glaciated regions of the world except Antarctica and analyze how glacial lakes changed over that period.

Glacial lakes are not stable like the lakes in which most people are used to swimming or boating because they are often dammed by ice or glacial sediment called a moraine, which is composed of loose rock and debris that is pushed to the front and sides of glaciers.

Rather, they can be quite unstable and can burst their banks or dams, causing massive floods downstream.

These kinds of floods from glacial lakes, known as glacial lake outburst floods, have been responsible for thousands of deaths over the past century, as well as the destruction of villages, infrastructure, and livestock.

A glacial lake outburst flood affected the Hunza Valley in Pakistan in May 2020.

“This is an issue for many parts of the world where people live downstream from these hazardous lakes, mostly in the Andes and in places like Bhutan and Nepal, where these floods can be devastating,” Shugar said.

IPL 13: Bio-bubble needs to be respected at all times, stresses Kohli

0

India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli has urged all teams to respect the Indian Premier League’s bio-secure bubble.

Speaking on RCB’s Youtube show ‘Bold Diaries’, the 31-year-old Kohli said he didn’t exactly miss the game during the COVID-forced lockdown, which brought sporting action to a halt.

“Maybe because I was going on day and night for the last 10 years…It was a revelation for me in the sense that my focus was not solely on missing the game all the time,” Kohli said.

“We are all here to play cricket…The bio-bubble needs to be respected at all times for the tournament to happen eventually. We are not here to have fun and roam around and you know say that ‘I want to hang out in Dubai’,” Kohli said.

“That is not the time we are living in. Accept the phase that we are going through and understand the privilege that we have, just to be a part of the IPL. Everyone should accept that and not behave in a manner which the situation doesn’t require them to,” he said.

Kohli also added that it didn’t take much time for him to find his groove.

“A couple of months back you couldn’t imagine that you will have IPL firstly…When we had our practice session yesterday, I realized how long it has been. When I was heading to the practice session, I felt nervous,” he conceded.

“I felt a bit jittery but things were okay. I didn’t miss the game as much as I thought I might…just carrying on with life was also important,” he said.

Study shows clear link between obesity, Covid-19 severity

0

New research adds to the growing body of evidence that patients with obesity are facing more serious Covid-19 disease and higher mortality risk than patients without obesity.

At the beginning of April, both general and intensive care admissions for Covid-19 began to rise sharply in Lille University Hospital (LUH), and across France and other European countries.

“Our data show that the chances of increasing to more severe disease increase with BMI, to the point where almost all intensive care COVID-19 patients with severe obesity will end up on a ventilator,” said study author Francois Pattou from the LUH in France.

An analysis conducted by the LUH included 124 intensive care unit (ICU) admissions with Covid-19 and compared them with 306 patients who had been in ICU for other reasons, without Covid-19.

The data showed that among ICU patients with Covid-19, around half had obesity (BMI above 30), with a quarter having severe obesity (BMI of 35 or above).

Most of the remaining patients (around 40 percent) were overweight, with only around 10 percent of patients in the healthy weight range (BMI 25 or under).

Among the non-COVID-19 ICU patients, the story was very different: a quarter had obesity or severe obesity; a further quarter was overweight, and around half fell into the healthy weight range.

A similar trend emerged regarding which ICU patients with Covid-19 had to be put on ventilators. Of the 89 requiring mechanical ventilation, more than half had obesity or severe obesity, while most of the other patients were overweight.

According to the study, patients with a BMI in the healthy range of 25 and under made up less than 10 percent of patients needing a ventilator.

Looking specifically at the individual BMI groups, almost all patients Covid-19 ICU patients with severe obesity (87 percent) needed a ventilator, dropping to 75 percent for ‘regular’ obesity (BMI 30-35), 60 percent for patients in the overweight category, and 47 percent for those in the healthy BMI range.

The study was scheduled to be presented at The European and International Congress on Obesity (ECOICO 2020) online conference from September 1-4.

Recently, a study published in the journal Diabetes Care found that Covid-19 patients hospitalized with high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes were over three times more likely to die from the viral disease.

Earlier, another research published in the European Journal of Endocrinology, also found that the risk of greater Covid-19 severity and death is higher in people with any obese body mass index (BMI).

Apple accidentally approved malware to enter Macs, fixed later

0

Apple has fixed a malware disguised as an update for Adobe Flash player that slipped through its toughest security screening software and got approved for its Mac desktops.

Mac security researchers Peter Dantini and Patrick Wardle found a common malware campaign disguised as an Adobe Flash installer.

Wardle said that Apple approved popular Shlayer malware disguised as Adobe Flash installer.

According to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, the malware is the “most common threat” that Macs faced in 2019, reports TechCrunch.

The malware passed through a strict Apple process called “notarisation,” that scans an app for security issues.

Once approved, Mac’s in-built security screening software called “Gatekeeper” allowed the app to run.

“As far as I know, this is a first,” Wardle said. It means Apple did not detect the malicious code when it was submitted and approved it to run on Macs.

An Apple spokesperson told TechCrunch: “Malicious software constantly changes, and Apple’s notarization system helps us keep malware off the Mac and allow us to respond quickly when it’s discovered.

“Upon learning of this adware, we revoked the identified variant, disabled the developer account, and revoked the associated certificates. We thank the researchers for their assistance in keeping our users safe”.

The cybercriminals were, however, back with a new notarised’ payload that was again blocked by Apple.

For close to two years, the Shlayer Trojan has been the most common threat on the macOS platform.

Telcos get 10 years to clear AGR dues, 1st instalment of 10% by March 2021

0

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted 10 years to telecom companies to clear their respective adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues and also directed them to deposit the first installment of 10 percent by March 31, 2021.

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said the installments should be paid by February 7 of every succeeding year.

The apex court also warned the telecom companies that if there was any default, then it would accrue interest, and also non-payment would invite contempt of court proceedings against the firms.

It also said it agreed with senior advocate Harish Salve that the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) should first decide whether the spectrum can be a subject matter of resolution proceedings.

During the hearing, the Centre said it is fine with the 20 years arrangement to recover AGR dues, as senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi appearing for Vodafone Idea accepted the demand of Rs 58,000 crore AGR dues, and insisted that the only way to pay and honor the top court judgment is to allow Vodafone a 20-year payment period. Later, however, he agreed to a 15-year time period.

Even, Airtel sought 15 years to clear the AGR dues.

The Centre had informed the top court that the Cabinet has considered the issue and decided on a 20-year period, and it has provided this relief due to the cascading effect on the economy.

Amazon gets US approval for drone delivery of packages

0

Amazon has come to a step closer to launching drone delivery of packages in the US after it received a crucial certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

With the possession of what is called Part 135 air carrier certificate, Amazon can run its fleet of Prime Air delivery drones, CNBC reported on Monday.

According to FAA, Part 135 certification is the “only path for small drones to carry the property of another for compensation beyond visual line of sight”.

Following the crucial approval, Amazon said it will start testing customer deliveries, said the report.

“This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and indicates the FAA’s confidence in Amazon’s operating and safety procedures for an autonomous drone delivery service that will one day deliver packages to our customers around the world,” David Carbon, Vice President of Prime Air, was quoted as saying in a statement.

“We will continue to develop and refine our technology to fully integrate delivery drones into the airspace, and work closely with the FAA and other regulators around the world to realize our vision of 30-minute delivery.”

The e-commerce giant started testing delivery drones way back in 2013 with the aim of delivering packages within 30 minutes.

Several other companies, including UPS and Alphabet-owned Wing, have received Part 135 certification from the FAA.

With surging Covid cases, Andhra hires 1,350 ambulances

0

With the massive surge in Covid-19 cases continuing in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has hired over 1,350 ambulances across all 13 districts.

These ambulances will be used to transport COVID patients from one hospital to another or from their house to a hospital or COVID care center, officials said on Tuesday.

The authorities have made it mandatory for district collectors to hire at least two additional ambulances in every Mandal (a cluster of villages). The collectors have been authorized to hire as many as needed, depending on the workload. In certain mandalas, even 5-6 additional ambulances have been hired in order to provide better services to the citizens.

These ambulances will help the authorities implement the recently introduced ‘referral system’ under which the hospital referring the patient will have to arrange for an ambulance to transport the patient apart from informing the receiving hospital. To ensure smooth functioning, a call center has been set up in every Mandal. The local health workers, doctors, and hospitals have been given the call center number using which they could call for an ambulance.

“We already have one 108 ambulance in every Mandal but due to the increased workload, in an attempt to decentralize things further, the districts have been instructed to hire at least two additional ambulances per Mandal exclusively for transporting COVID positive persons. These aren’t critical patients. While the minimum is two per Mandal, there is no upper limit. Districts have been given the right to hire as many as needed,” said Kattamaneni Bhaskar, Commissioner, Health and Family Welfare.

With over 4.34 lakh COVID cases, Andhra Pradesh has become the second-worst affected state in the country after Maharashtra. As of Monday, the number of fatalities in Andhra stood at 3,969.

For the last six days, the state has been adding over 10,000 cases every day and also reporting a daily death rate of 85-90.

OnePlus CEO joins OPPO’s holding company in senior role: Report

0

Pete Lau, CEO, and co-founder of the Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus has joined OPPO as senior vice president and head of the product experience team.

With the new assignment, Lau will act as SVP and head of product experience at Ouija Holdings Ltd., internationally known as OPlus, which is a majority shareholder of both OPPO and OnePlus, reports GizmoChina citing a Chinese newspaper paper.cn.

OnePlus has officially confirmed that Lau will remain as the CEO of OnePlus in addition to his role as SVP at OPlus.

OPPO is wholly owned by Oujia holdings Ltd. (OPlus) and Oujia holdings own a majority 74 percent stake in OnePlus as well as a majority stake in Realme too, according to the report.

All three smartphone brands are owned by the same OPlus holdings.

According to the report, with Lau as the SVP of the holding company, he will be tasked with the responsibility of “brand synergy between OPPO, OnePlus, and Realme”.

Lau joined OPPO in 1998 and was promoted to the head of marketing. In 2013, Lau left OPPO and founded OnePlus.

Asthma may not be significant risk factor for severe Covid-19

0

Researchers have found that patients with asthma do not seem to be at risk from complications associated with being hospitalized with Covid-19 disease.

The study, published in the journal Annals of the American Thoracic Society, examined whether asthma is a significant risk factor for developing Covid-19 that is severe enough to warrant hospitalization and intubation.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) places people with asthma at higher risk for COVID-related hospitalization,” said study researcher Fernando Holguin from the University of Colorado Anschutz in the US.

“However, many international studies show low numbers of asthmatics among hospitalized Covid-19 patients. These findings challenge the assumption about asthma as a risk factor,” Holguin added.

For the findings, the research team compared the prevalence of asthma among patients hospitalized for Covid-19, as reported in 15 peer-reviewed studies, with that of the corresponding population’s asthma prevalence.

They also correlated the study’s asthma prevalence with the four-year average asthma prevalence in influenza hospitalizations in the US.

In addition, they analyzed the medical records of 436 Covid-19 patients admitted to the University of Colorado Hospital to evaluate the likelihood that patients with asthma would be intubated more often than patients without asthma.

The researchers also performed a focused review of English-language scientific literature in order to identify studies reporting asthma prevalence among patients hospitalized for Covid-19 infection.

Three independent reviewers agreed on 15 studies to include in the analysis.

Using local data from hospitalized Covid-19 patients, they performed a statistical analysis to determine the relationship between asthma status and intubation, once they took into account patients’ age, gender, and body mass index (BMI).

“We found that the proportion of asthmatics among hospitalized patients with Covid-19 is relatively similar to that of each study site’s population asthma prevalence,” the authors wrote.

This finding is in stark contrast to influenza, in which asthmatics make up more than 20 percent of those hospitalized in the US,” they added.

“Using data from our hospital, we also observed that among Covid-19 patients, those with asthma, which had a 12 percent prevalence rate, did not seem to be more likely to be intubated than non-asthmatics,” the team noted.

The research team theorized that the corticosteroid inhalers many people with asthma use make it more difficult for coronaviruses to enter their airways.

Covid cases surge again in T’gana with ramping up of tests

0

After a day’s gap, Covid-19 cases in Telangana surged again on Tuesday as the health authorities ramped up testing.

A day after reporting 1,873 cases, the daily count hit 2,734 taking the overall tally to 1,27,697. Nine more people succumbed to the virus during the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 836.

The authorities ramped up the number of tests to 58,264 against 37,791 the previous day. Before that, the state had been conducting nearly 62,000 tests every day for seven days.

With the numbers reported Tuesday, the tests conducted in the state so far rose to 14,23,846.

According to a media bulletin issued from the office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, 26,219 primary contacts and 8,157 secondary contacts were tested during the last 24 hours. The results of 878 samples are awaited.

A total of 17 government and 35 private laboratories are conducting these tests, while the state has 1076 rapid antigen test centers. Unlike some other states, the authorities in Telangana have not been providing a breakup of the type of tests conducted.

The officials claimed that with 38,351 samples tested per million population, the number of tests conducted in the state is much higher than the daily testing target of 5,600 per day as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) benchmark of 140 per million per day.

Out of the total 1,27,697 positive cases detected so far, 88,111 that is 69 percent are asymptomatic while the rest are symptomatic.

The health officials said the case fatality rate of the state is low at 0.65 percent against the national average of 1.77 percent. Out of the total fatalities, 53.87 percent had comorbidities.

Of the fresh cases recorded in the state, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for 347 against 360 the previous day. The decline in the number of cases despite ramping of tests show that the situation in the state capital is under control.

However, the number of cases rose in Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri districts abutting GHMC to 212 and 121 respectively. Sangareddy, another district bordering the state capital, recorded only 16 new cases.

With 191 cases, Nalgonda emerged as the second with the highest number of fresh infections after Greater Hyderabad and Rangareddy.

Khammam reported 161 new cases, Bhadradri Kothagudem 117, Nizamabad 114. Karimnagar saw the cases rising by 106 while the numbers increased by 109 in Siddipet. Warangal Urban reported 112 cases, Suryapet 107 and Siddipet 109.

During the last 24 hours, 2,325 people recovered from COVID, taking the total number of recoveries to 95,162. The state’s recovery rate further improved to 74.5 while the national average is 76.94 percent.

The number of active cases in the state stands at 31,699, including 24,598 in-home/institutional isolation.

Age-wise COVID positive details show that 65.3 percent of those tested positive were in the age group of 21-50 years. The Officials said that 24.71 percent are above 51 years of age and about 10 percent were aged below 20 years.

The officials said 64.41 percent of those tested positive were male while the remaining 35.59 percent were female.

According to the media bulletin, out of 20,396 beds under the government, 17,657 beds are vacant including 1,542 ICU beds and 4,556 oxygen beds.

The number of private hospitals treating COVID in the state has been further increased to 184. They have 9,621 beds, out of which 5,259 are vacant.

Sweeney replied: “While waiting for Apple to #FreeFortnite on iOS and Mac, here’s another awesome battle royale game powered by Unreal Engine!”

PUBG Mobile is developed on Epic Games’ open and real-time 3D creation platform Unreal Engine.

A US judge ruled last week that Apple cannot delete the developer account of Epic Games that support Unreal Engine but can keep the Fortnite game away from the App Store for violating its policies.

The Fortnite game was removed from the App Store on August 13 for adding an in-app payment system in violation of its rules.

The Fortnite game just received the ‘Season 4; update on platforms other than the iOS.

Launched in 2017, Fortnite features a battle royale format where 100 players compete to survive as the last player standing on a remote island.

The popular game has amassed a huge following of over 350 million players and is available on multiple platforms.
