LG Wing dual rotating screen phone may cost around $1,000

0

LG is planning to launch a new smartphone LG Wing with an unusual T-shape design and a rotating form factor and now a new report has claimed that the device will launch in the US this fall for around $1,000.

According to a report in XDA Developers, the device may be significantly cheaper than earlier reported.

The LG Wing is expected to feature two screens, a 6.8-inch main panel that also rotates into landscape mode to reveal a smaller 4-inch secondary panel under it that creates the ‘T’ shape form factor.

The device is likely to come with a triple camera setup consisting a 64MP primary image sensor and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 700 series processor with 5G capability.

“We can expect the Snapdragon 765, the Snapdragon 765G, or the Snapdragon 768G,” the report said.

Multiple Geekbench listings for a device with the model name “LGE LM-F100N” and code-name “winglm” suggest the device will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G in particular as the GPU is listed as the Adreno 620.

LG currently offers a Dual Screen Attachment with some of its top-end smartphones, including the LG Velvet and LG G8x ThinQ.

0

In a bid to help players bond during their isolation period and also take care of their mental health during tough times, Indian Premier League’s most successful franchise, Mumbai Indians, has dished out a sprawling recreation center which is synced with their secured bio bubble.

The Team Room – ‘ONE FAMILY’ area, a 15,000 sq ft of the recreation center, was opened to players and family for the first time on Sunday and as per pictures shared by the four-time IPL winners, the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and others were seen having a gala time.

The recreation center has a theatre, pool table, karaoke, lounge, and fun games for players to re-energize their minds as they gear up for the 13th edition of the cash-rich league slated to start from September 19 in the UAE.

Here in Abu Dhabi, Mumbai Indians had their first training session last Friday. Rohit led his team into the ground and even as he batted, his pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ran into the bowl some quick deliveries and get back his rhythm.

In line with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the BCCI, all the players and support staff underwent a mandatory six-day quarantine after arriving in the UAE.

RT-PCR tests were conducted on everyone on Day 1, 3, and 6 of the quarantine.

The players were already tested multiple times before departure for the UAE. The players and support staff will be tested every fifth day of the tournament.

Dhoni should bat up the order for CSK this time: Gambhir

0

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels MS Dhoni should bat up the order for Chennai Super Kings in this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which will be played in the UAE.

Speaking exclusively on Star Sports show Cricket Connected, Gambhir said: “It will be a good opportunity for MS Dhoni to come and bat at No. 3. And he has been away from the game for the last one year, so he would end up getting a lot more balls to face and then he can actually play the anchor innings as well which he has been doing for India for the last couple of years.

“So, MS Dhoni at No. 3 and then they have got depth with Kedar Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo, Sam Curran, all those guys they can come in. So, I think it is going to be a great opportunity for someone like MS Dhoni and I am sure he is going to relish that. Also, Suresh Raina not being there, you want to have some experienced player batting at No. 3, so it could be MS Dhoni now,” opined Gambhir.

The IPL starts on September 19.

Former India captain Dhoni announced his international retirement on August 15, but will lead CSK this time in the cash-rich league.

‘BMI more powerful risk factor for diabetes than genetics’

0

Body mass index (BMI) is a more powerful risk factor for diabetes than genetics, said researchers, adding that losing weight could prevent or even reverse diabetes.

Obesity is the main modifiable cause of type 2 diabetes, while genetic make-up may also identify individuals with a greater likelihood of developing the condition, the study presented at the ‘ESC Congress 2020’ conference on Monday revealed.

“Because we are born with our genes, it might be possible to pinpoint early in life who has a high chance of developing diabetes during their lifetime,” said study researcher Brian Ference from the University of Cambridge in the UK.

“We conducted this study to find out if combining inherited risk with current body mass index (BMI) could identify people at the highest risk of developing diabetes,” Ference added.

The study included 445,765 participants of the UK Biobank. The average age was 57.2 years and 54 percent were women.

According to the researchers, the inherited risk of diabetes was assessed using 6.9 million genes. Height and weight were measured at enrolment to calculate BMI.

Participants were divided into five groups according to the genetic risk of diabetes. They were also divided into five groups according to BMI.

Participants were followed-up until an average age of 65.2 years. During that period, 31,298 developed type 2 diabetes.

The findings showed that those in the highest BMI group had an 11-fold increased risk of diabetes compared to participants in the lowest BMI group. The highest BMI group had a greater likelihood of developing diabetes than all other BMI groups, regardless of genetic risk.

“The findings indicate that BMI is a much more powerful risk factor for diabetes that genetic predisposition,” said Ference.

The investigators then used statistical methods to estimate whether the likelihood of diabetes in people with a high BMI would be even greater if they were overweight for a long period of time. They found that the duration of elevated BMI did not have an impact on the risk of diabetes.

“This suggests that when people cross a certain BMI threshold, their chances of diabetes go up and stay at that same high-risk level regardless of how long they are overweight,” Ference said.

He noted that it may also be possible to reverse diabetes by losing weight in the early stages before permanent damage occurs.

I was winner in my own eyes even before my first shot: Bindra

0

Abhinav Bindra, who is India’s first individual Olympic Gold Medallist, said that even before he had shot his first competition shot in Beijing, he considered himself as a winner in his own eyes.

To relive some of the defining moments in the history of Indian sports, Baseline Ventures has conceptualized and produced an eight-part web series titled “The Finish Line” which documents eight defining moments from Indian sports by recreating the moment by the very athlete, who made history.

“The Finish Line” is being presented by Induslnd Bank and is powered by Muse Wearables.

The date of 11 August 2008 is definitely one of the most defining moments in the history of Indian sports, but what most sports fans don’t know are the few things that went wrong for Bindra that day.

When quizzed about those moments of panic, the former shooter said, “Just five minutes before the big final, I realized that the sight of my gun had been altered just a little bit. There was complete panic that was running through my head, but funnily enough, going into Beijing I had also trained for it. I was frozen for a moment though and had no clue what to do but giving up was not an option. I decided that I have to fight, hence I got up and tried to get my sights working in order. From there on I shot the best 10 shot of my life that eventually got me the medal.”

It probably just happens once in a lifetime that everything works like clockwork and the rhythm flows perfectly. For Bindra too, it was one of the most surreal feelings of his life.

“Well at that time it was very important for me to remain in the moment, I was not thinking ahead at all and just taking it one shot at a time. There was definitely a storm brewing up but since I had accepted the storm, all the things that were happening surrounding it did not really matter to me. I was just trying to be immersed in my technique and I was actually immersed in it. That is the difference between really performing well and not performing well at the highest level,” said the Olympic champion.

After hitting a shot of 10.8 which was the best shot of his round, Bindra was still confused if he had won the gold. He looked around to enquire if he actually did. When he was asked about that moment in the show, he said: “The greatest emotion I felt at that moment was the feeling of relief because, throughout my journey, I have been very obsessive with my goal. All my eggs were in one basket, certainly not the way I promote to young athletes. It was a huge amount of relief that, what I had set out to do in my life, I was able to achieve that. It was the greatest emotion that I had felt. I was very happy as this moment was the biggest thrill of my life, that thrill lasted for 2 seconds and that’s it.”

The eight legends who have been confirmed for season 1 of The Finish Line are Abhinav Bindra, Viswanathan Anand, Dinesh Karthik, Pankaj Advani, Smriti Mandhana, Leander Paes, Parul Parmar, and Varun Singh Bhati. Vishwanathan Anand will feature in the next episode of “The Finish Line” this Friday.

Samsung ‘One UI’ takes big leap with Galaxy Note20 series

0

Unlike in the past when cellphones had physical buttons and a limited number of features, smartphones now offer a wide range of functions and according to a global Samsung executive, developing a simple yet effective user interface (UI) is the key to deliver comfortable digital experiences and Galaxy Note20 series does just that.

Using the same component that serves as the device’s viewing medium for the primary input tool can sometimes present difficulties for users. This is where the device’s UI comes into play.

In 2018, Samsung introduced an improved version of its standard user interface and software overlay called ‘One UI’.

One UI is Samsung’s custom Android skin that’s currently on its second iteration, and soon going on the third.

According to Yoojin Hong, Vice President and Head of User Experience, Samsung Electronics, the ‘One UI’ has taken a giant leap with the new Galaxy Note20 series.

“For the Galaxy Note20, we focused on enhancing the most important usability features, making them even more seamless and impactful.

“This was based on consumer feedback. Note users are very loyal and huge fans of the S Pen and Notes experiences, and we wanted to elevate those features even further with our latest offering,” Hong told IANS.

One UI has been further developed into ‘One UI 2’, which was unveiled at the end of last year. One UI 2.5 update is now available for the Galaxy S20 phones and is rolling out to more Samsung devices.

Through usage pattern analysis, Samsung found that more users create content with their smartphones.

“Previously, tablets and PC were the main tools in content production, but with bigger screens and enhanced software experiences, more users are also using their smartphones,” Hong said.

The company redesigned Samsung Notes to provide a more simplistic user experience but with more functionality.

“For example, with the Note9, we added a floating toolbar with free positioning. However, we received user feedback requesting a fixed toolbar. So with the Note10, we included a new toolbar that docked at the bottom, but could be freely repositioned to avoid interference,” Hong explained.

In Note20, the ‘Auto Straighten’ feature adjusts uneven or sideways writing.

“We know that many consumers have handwriting that tilts while they’re writing. The straightening feature is enabled by excellent handwriting recognition based on pattern analysis,” she emphasized.

The company introduced in Note20 a new page structure in Samsung Notes and allowed users to handwrite notes on PDF files, images and texts directly through Samsung Notes, reflecting one of the frequent requests from users

“We reinforced to deliver a seamlessly integrated experience with auto-saving and syncing across mobile devices, tablets, and PCs. We also expanded our long-term collaboration with Microsoft to make working across devices even easier,” Hong told IANS.

The collaboration with Microsoft will ensure seamless integration between Galaxy devices with Microsoft 365 and Windows 10 PCs.

According to the Samsung executive, they are continuing to develop One UI with the principles of “intuition, consistency and efficiency, and look forward to delivering new mobile experiences for consumers that make their lives easier”.

“We’ve also added a variety of new features to make the mobile experience comfortable and effortless. By introducing consistent and predictable patterns, we have enabled users to easily find even the newly added features,” Hong said.

The priority, she added, is to maintain the screen simple and clean while adding new features.

“We want consumers using our devices to feel that the experience is both straightforward and familiar,” she said.

ISL: Hyderabad FC appoint Manolo Marquez as new head coach

0

Indian Super League (ISL) side Hyderabad FC on Monday announced the appointment highly-experienced Spaniard Manuel ‘Manolo’ Marquez as their new head coach.

Spain’s Albert Roca was slated to coach Hyderabad FC but a call from new FC Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman forced him to sever ties and join the Spanish giants’ coaching staff.

Marquez, who previously worked at the helm in the Spanish LaLiga and the Croatian top-flight, has penned a one-year deal till the end of the 2020-21 season.

“It’s a big challenge for me to join Hyderabad FC as we are set to begin our season soon. The club has already been preparing and working on a lot of things over the last few months so that makes it a comparatively smoother process for me to settle in,” said the 51-year-old.

“Given that Hyderabad FC intends to follow the same philosophy which I’ve worked with over so many years, I believe there are common goals already present. Now it’s just about hitting the ground running and imparting those ideologies to the players,” he added.

Hyderabad FC co-owner Varun Tripuraneni said: “We have worked towards a unified goal over the last seven-eight months while building our team. It has been one of our top priorities to continue the good work that everyone has put in and we strongly believe that Manuel Marquez is the perfect choice to do that.”

“He has the credentials, and more importantly the experience to fit into our club. He has consistently proven himself at various levels and we expect a seamless transition.”

A defender by trade, the Barcelona native turned out for various sides in the Spanish leagues, before hanging up his boots at the age of 28. During his two-decade-long coaching career, Marquez has worked with the likes of PB Anguera, AE Prat, CE Europa, CF Badalona, RCD Espanyol B, UE Sant Andreu, and UD Las Palmas B in the Spanish league system.

He took charge of LaLiga side UD Las Palmas in 2017 before working with Croatian top-flight side NK Istra 1961 in 2018.

Covid boosts Blockchain-based projects in supply chain: Report

0

While there have been many cancellations and postponements in Blockchain-based projects in Covid-19 times, those related to supply chain and logistics have actually accelerated, according to a new report.

By enabling companies to automate processes around shared, trusted data, Blockchain helps reduce cost and increase supply chain efficiency as well as resilience

“Given that CIOs and other budget holders typically cut emerging technology projects first, many were expecting blockchain initiatives to be among the worst hit. Not so,” said Martha Bennett. VP, Principal Analyst (serving CIO professionals) in a Forrester report.

Once companies had addressed the initial challenges of switching to remote working and doing what was necessary to keep operations running, decision-makers focused on their other technology projects, including Blockchain.

The pace is accelerating for projects and networks that help solve acute issues. The pandemic served to underscore just how broken many aspects of current supply chain and logistics systems are.

“Not surprisingly, existing networks offering capabilities to help address those shortcomings received an immediate uptick in interest. The same applies to vendors – large firms and startups alike – with proven capabilities and software to help enterprises set up or join Distributed ledger technology (DLT) or Blockchain-based networks quickly and reliably.

“Other use cases around pandemic-related challenges (vaccine tracking, sharing of research data, and clinical trials) also moved up the priority list. Initiatives that demonstrate cost and time savings continue to receive funding, even in industries that are struggling,” Bennett said.

Covid-19 has boosted blockchain projects that increase efficiency and reduce cost as well as those that help improve transparency and flexibility, especially in supply chain and logistics.

“But the move toward a more collaborative way of working among supply chain participants had already started. And we’re not just talking about DLT trailblazers like Maersk and Walmart here,” the report mentioned.

Many Blockchain projects fail even after completion of a successful proof-of-concept (POC) or pilot project.

“You can avoid this by taking the whole process into consideration right from the start.

Map out clearly how the Blockchain element fits into it and how data can be transferred securely between the distributed ledger and existing back-end systems,” Bennett informed.

Check carefully what’s available out of the box, as not all networks and as-a-service offerings feature prebuilt integrations with key back-end systems, like ERP and accounting.

“Make sure that you involve the security and risk team right from the beginning. Taking these steps will slow you down in the early stages but inoculate you against two of the most common causes of post-PoC failure,” she added.

ISL: Jamshedpur FC add midfielder Alexandre Monteiro de Lima

0

Alexandre Monteiro de Lima, simply known as Alex, has become the latest acquisition for Jamshedpur FC, being signed for the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) season.

Alex is a midfielder who comes at the back of a star-studded career across the world and becomes the club’s fourth foreign player (along with Aitor Monroy, David Grande, and Nerka Valskis).

The 31-year-old has the experience of playing in Asia with stints in the highly competitive K League 2 (South Korea) with Suwon FC and FC Anyang and most recently with Ho Chi Minh City FC in V.League 1 (Vietnam).

The midfielder has amassed a total of 43 goals and 23 assists in a total of 337 appearances in his career so far.

Head coach Owen Coyle said: “Alex is a player of multiple capabilities. A team-player, aggressive, smart, quick, a powerhouse – I could go on with a hundred adjectives and yet, it would not be enough to describe him. He is an amazing talent who can unlock the toughest of defenses.”

The Brazilian began his career in the youth system of Gremio Mauaense in Brazil. In 2008, he went on to sign as a professional player for FC Wohlen in Switzerland. He became a regular starter for the Swiss 1 Liga club where he spent four years and also enjoyed a spell on loan at FC Gossau of the same league.

Study confirms link between influenza, heart complications

0

The link between influenza and serious heart conditions just grew stronger, say, researchers, adding that patients hospitalized with the flu had a cardiac complication despite having no documented underlying conditions.

A study looking at more than 80,000 adult patients hospitalized with flu over eight seasons found that sudden, serious heart complications were common, occurring in 12 percent of patients, or one in 8.

“Previous to our study, there had been suggestions between the link, but our study shows just how common it is,” said lead author Eric Chow from the University of Washington School of Medicine in the US.

The study, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, underscores the importance of getting a flu shot early.

“There are few respiratory viruses we have a vaccine for. “Our team motto is to get a flu shot,” Chow said.

The study found that five percent of patients hospitalized with the flu had a cardiac complication despite having no documented underlying conditions.

In the last month, there have been cases of otherwise healthy athletes showing signs of heart complications after recovering from Covid-19.

For example, 27-year-old Florida State basketball player Michael Ojo, who recovered from Covid-19, died of an apparent heart attack at a practice.

Chow said he is not surprised this is happening to healthy people who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The virus can cause damage to the lungs and other organs, including the heart. Inflammation makes hearts vulnerable to potentially fatal arrhythmias during vigorous exercise.

In this study of adults hospitalized with flu, 12 percent had acute heart complications. Of these, 30 percent were admitted to the ICU and seven percent died while in the hospital.

The researchers said that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine every flu season.

According to the CDC, flu vaccination is always considered important for people at high risk of developing serious flu complications, including people with heart disease.

Flu shots are approved for people with heart disease, but people with heart disease should not receive the live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV, also known as the nasal spray flu vaccine).

Kush Maini marches to maiden 2020 win in British F3

0

Hitech GP’s Kush Maini secured his first win of the 2020 season after having picked up five other podiums over the last 10 races with a controlled drive in the final race of the weekend, and in the process extended his championship lead at the Brands Hatch Circuit in the UK.

Kush started from his second pole position of the championship which was achieved by the average of the two fastest laps in the preceding three races of the weekend. Kush was second in Race 1 and third in Race 3.

The Indian claimed the victory by 0.782 seconds over Douglas Motorsport’s Ulysse De Pauw and earned Hitech GP’s first win in BRDC British F3. He also set the fastest lap of the race. Double R Racing’s Louis Foster claimed the final spot on the podium, four seconds further back from the lead duo.

“We’ve been waiting for that first win after five podiums, but I didn’t want to rush it. I just wanted to gather points and I knew the win would come sooner or later, and finally it came so I’m really happy,” said Maini.

“For me I don’t look at the championship until the last two rounds to be honest because in this championship anything can happen as you saw.

“They’re so brilliant, Hitech gave me a faultless car. They’ve taken 9 podiums in 11 races including the win now, and the championship lead, in their debut year,” he added.

Maini’s win means he now holds a championship lead of 29 points, having entered the weekend 29 points behind then-leader Kaylen Frederick.

The BRDC British F3 Championship returns to action on September 19-20 at Donington Park.

LG Electronics unveils new home cinema projector

0

LG Electronics, a major home appliance maker in South Korea, on Monday, unveiled its new home theatre projector to boost its presence in the fast-growing home cinema market amid the pandemic.

The new model of LG CineBeam Laser 4K, HU810P, will hit the shelves in South Korea no later than this year and will be sold in major markets in North America and Europe, reports Yonhap news agency.

Biocon Biologics, Mylan launch Semglee insulin glargine injection in US

0

Biocon Biologics and Mylan on Monday announced the launch of Semglee insulin glargine injection in the US to expand access for patients living with diabetes.

Semglee is available in vial and pen presentations at a 65 percent discounted list price, the lowest available for a long-acting insulin glargine on the market.

It is approved to help control high blood sugar in adult and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes and adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not recommended for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Semglee, which received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has an identical amino acid sequence to Sanofi’s Lantus and is approved for the same indications.

Thomas Blevins, lead investigator for the IN STRIDE clinical trials, said: “The availability of Semglee provides another quality treatment option for patients living with diabetes in the US. We rigorously compared Semglee (insulin glargine injection) to the reference insulin glargine in participants with Type 1 and 2 diabetes and found that Semglee yielded similar (non-inferior) glycemic results in both groups. The safety, including immunogenicity, was similar too. As a result, this insulin was approved by the FDA for the same indications as its reference product Lantus, thus expanding access for millions of people within this important patient community.”

To encourage broad patient access to this important medicine, Mylan is offering Semglee at a wholesale acquisition cost (WAC)[1] of $147.98 per package of five (5) 3 ml pens and $98.65 per 10 ml vial, representing the lowest WAC for any long-acting insulin glargine on the market.

The list price of the Semglee pen is equivalent to the Lantus launch price in 2007, and the Semglee vial is listed at Lantus’s 2010 pricing. Eligible patients may also qualify for patient assistance and/or a co-pay card, similar to other medications in this class. Additionally, Mylan has submitted to FDA all necessary documentation to request approval of Semglee as a biosimilar to Lantus under the 351(k) pathway and remains confident in seeking an interchangeability designation.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson, Biocon said: “The commercialization of our insulin glargine in the US represents another milestone achievement for Biocon in making insulin-based therapy increasingly accessible for people with diabetes globally. We are confident that along with our long-standing partner Mylan, we will be able to address the needs of millions of patients living with diabetes in the US. Leveraging our science and global scale manufacturing expertise, we have been expanding affordable access to biosimilar insulins to patients in Japan, Australia, Europe, India, and key emerging markets. The US launch of Semglee takes us closer to realizing our aspiration of reaching ‘one in five’ insulin-dependent people with diabetes worldwide.”

Christiane Hamacher, CEO, Biocon Biologics said: “It is indeed a proud moment for Biocon Biologics to make Semglee (insulin glargine injection) available to patients in the US. Our unwavering focus on developing and manufacturing global quality insulins enables us to address the growing needs of diabetes patients and healthcare systems.”

Mylan CEO Heather Bresch said: “We are proud to be the first company, following the reference product, to receive FDA approval on and launch both the vial and pen presentations of an insulin glargine treatment with an identical amino acid sequence to Sanofi’s Lantus. Even more importantly, we are proud to make Semglee available to more than 30 million Americans living with diabetes in the US, providing more treatment options, and increasing access.”
