Greece’s daily Covid-19 cases hit record high

0

Greece reported 284 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period, the highest single-day spike since February.

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Sunday that with the latest figure, the overall caseload in the country now stands at 8,664, with 242 fatalities, reports Xinhua news agency.

Two people died this weekend, while 31 are currently in intensive care units.

Greek officials have repeatedly dismissed the idea of a second nationwide lockdown similar to the one imposed earlier this year for over a month.

In recent weeks, the government has opted for curfews and various restrictive measures in the regions of Attica, eastern Macedonia-Thrace, and Crete, as well as popular tourist destinations like Corfu, Santorini, Rhodes.

Officials have also stressed that the recent spike of cases was not linked to the country’s reopening of tourism. The majority of the latest cases were domestic.

According to the EODY, out of the 284 new infections, only 17 were identified at the entry points to Greece.

Fewer cases of seasonal diseases reported as Agra battles Covid

0

Incidence of seasonal diseases like malaria, chikungunya, swine flu, dengue has apparently witnessed a drastic fall as Agra district battles the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Very few cases of seasonal diseases are being reported these days, primarily because there is better awareness, improved level of hygiene, reduced mobility, and periodic sanitation,” a state health department official said.

Health-conscious, better prepared, and a streamlined medical infrastructure with better response management are being cited as reasons for the control of seasonal health issues by doctors.

Covid-19, however, continues to remain a major worry in the Agra region with 38 new cases in the past 24 hours, Mathura has reported 42, Firozabad 40, Mainpuri 26, Kasganj 5 and Etah 4.

The total number of cases in Agra is 2,519, out of which 288 are active cases. A total of 106 deaths has been reported so far.

So far 96,917 samples have been collected and the recovery rate is 84.36 percent.

The Health Department officials said the increase in the number of containment zones to 69 was a worry. The number of containment zones in the urban areas is 86.

It’s a pity for PSG & I feel for them, says Coman

0

Bayern Munich striker Kingsley Coman, the scorer of the goal that gave his team their sixth UEFA Champions League title, has revealed that he wanted to give his 100 percent in the game but he feels for Paris Saint-Germain.

Coman was a starter against PSG, and the Bayern coach’s decision was vindicated when the Paris-born winger scored the match-winner after 58 minutes, his goal sealing the second treble in club history on Sunday.

From the very first minute, the 24-year-old demonstrated exactly the kind of “extra motivation” Hansi Flick had mentioned before the game. Coman turned on the burners for the first time after just 13 minutes but was just about stopped on the edge of the penalty area. The Wideman was unstoppable in the 59th minute however when he headed a Joshua Kimmich cross past Keylor Navas in the PSG goal to give Bayern the lead.

“I’m very, very happy, of course. I really must emphasize that. It was an incredible evening, not only for the club but for all the fans. I wanted to play well,” Coman said after the match as per the official Bayern Munich website.

“But that’s nothing against PSG, I’m just 100 percent FC Bayern now and I wanted to win so badly. And I just had to be professional, I couldn’t think about that during the game.

“Of course it’s a pity for Paris and I feel for them because I come from the city,” he added.

Meanwhile, Flick said that he was proud of the team and has not given any curfew to the players as they have earned to celebrate “properly”.

“The development over the last ten months has just been sensational. I haven’t given the team a curfew. We should celebrate properly, we’ve earned it. A big thank you to the whole team,” Flick said.

“The team resolutely went down this path today. We saw Paris have a lot of quality upfront but we defended bravely from the front.

“I think we deserved to win especially because of the second half. We have players who are determined to win and that’s what you need as a coach,” he added.

SHO in UP suspended for sexually harassing woman

A station house officer (SHO) in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district was suspended following a complaint of sexual assault against him by a 28-year-old woman.

According to reports, Banda SHO Sunil Sharma, who was earlier posted at the Kalaan police station, has been prime facie found guilty in the matter, leading to his suspension.

Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Anand said the woman had complained against him almost a month ago.

“She stated that she had met the former Kalaan police station SHO for some work. The SHO allegedly sexually assaulted her for almost a month,” the SP said and asked ASP (Rural) Aparna Gautam to probe the matter.

C.P. Singh has been made the new SHO of the Banda police station.

Shabana Azmi: Indianness is inclusiveness

0

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi shuns the hardliner stance that music and art are prohibited in Islam. She cites the example of greats such as late shehnai legend Ustad Bismillah Khan and late sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan to underline her point that true art is created when it is kept away from religious extremism. She notes that the very essence of Indianness is inclusiveness.

“We have to make redundant questions that prevent the practice of art and bring religious extremism in between. There are people who say music and art are prohibited in Islam, but look at how iconic artists like Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and so many other artistes have earned respect and success with their art and craft because they have made that question redundant thanks to their artistic excellence. If we want to build a progressive society, we have to get rid of such questions,” said Shabana.

Shabana Azmi’s thought process defines the theme of the film “Mee Raqsam”, which released digitally this weekend. The actress has presented the film, which marks the directorial debut of her brother, veteran cinematographer Baba Azmi. The film is about a Muslim girl who desires to become a Bharatnatyam dancer, but hardliners in her community react with intolerance to her dream and try to curtail her efforts because they have a problem with the fact that the dance form originates in Hindu mythology.

Baba Azmi and actor Danish Husain, who plays a central role in the film, agree with Shabana’s viewpoint that the pursuit of a particular art can never be judged by one’s religious identity or the origin of the art itself.

Said Danish: “If the origin of Bharatnatyam lies in Hindu mythology, it is but obvious that the influences in the art form will come from Hindu gods and goddesses. The qawwali, for instance, is a form of music that emerged from Sufi tradition and Amir Khusrau, so it will have Islamic influences. Now, see how extremely talented Dhruv Sangari is as a qawwali singer. But qawwali doesn’t come from Hindu mythology. That does not mean that one can question why Dhruv sings the qawwali. That is the barrier we have to break. Anyone, who is interested in an art form, can learn and practice it, irrespective of the origin of the art form.”

Director Baba Azmi added: “Art is a part of the culture. Religion is a different topic. You are born into a religion. If you find any art form fascinating and are interested to learn it, it is your choice. How does it matter which art form originated from which religion? If a youngster, who is a Muslim, finds bharatnatyam as a beautiful dance form and wishes to learn it, why should religion and society stop her? Art is different from religion, art itself is a religion.”

The Zee5 release features Danish Husain with Aditi Subedi, Sudeepta Singh, Rakesh Chaturvedi Om, Kaustubh Shukla, Juhaina Ahsan, and Shivangi Gautam. With Naseeruddin Shah in a special role.

“Indianness is inclusiveness. That inclusiveness makes us celebrate our diversity. We are like a bouquet of flowers with different fragrances but when these come together they spread the beautiful fragrances,” Shabana signed off.

Third Israeli Minister tests Covid-19 positive

0

Israel’s Minister of Immigration and Integration Pnina Tamano-Shata has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to a statement issued by Parliament.

“According to a preliminary investigation, the Minister was last at Parliament on August 19,” Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying on Sunday.

“Parliament will continue the epidemiological investigation, in coordination with the Health Ministry,” it added.

At the end of the investigation, the Health Ministry which decides which government and Parliament members will have a home quarantine.

Tamano-Shata is the third Minister to test positive since the pandemic hit the country in late February.

Also on Sunday, it was announced that Walid Taha, a parliament member of the Arab-Israeli party Joint List, had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Apple may discontinue iPhone 11 Pro, XR after iPhone 12 launch

0

Apple is likely to announce the iPhone 12 series in October and a new report has claimed that as soon as the new iPhones get released, the company would discontinue older models.

Apple may discontinue the iPhone XR after the iPhone 12 launches.

“They cite the availability of the more powerful iPhone SE 2020 as a better alternative rather than reducing the price of the XR again”, reports iAppleTimes.

iPhone XR has been a hot-selling device like iPhone 11. Apple will not discontinue iPhone 11 as it has broken several records to date, and may announce further price drop on this device.

In addition, Apple may also discontinue the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max as they now have successors.

Apple took a similar decision last year when it launched the iPhone 11 series as it discontinued the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

Apple is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series which would include two premium variants.

The iPhone 12 Pro will come in 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch sizes and may feature a high refresh-rate 120Hz ProMotion display, as presently seen on iPad Pro.

The rear camera module on the device will house four sensors with a LiDAR scanner which was introduced in the recently launched Apple iPad Pro.

All four iPhone models are expected to feature OLED displays and 5G support, as famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously claimed.

Musk may reveal human trials for brain computer tech this week

0

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is all set to reveal a key update on his brain-machine interface company Neuralink this week and may announce human trials for the technology that has been successful on mice and even apes.

While the whole agenda is still speculative, a live demonstration of neuron firing activity is confirmed.

“Will show neurons firing in real-time on August 28th. The matrix in the matrix,” Musk tweeted last month.

Musk has also claimed that a new Neuralink chip will allow users to hear sounds that previously were impossible to human ears.

He confirmed the new feature last month over an exchange with a Twitter user who asked: “If we implement Neuralink – can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature.”

Musk replied with a simple, “yes”.

He also confirmed that the chip would be able to control hormone levels, which would have the potential to help with anxiety relief, among other things.

To help paralyzed people control devices and empower people with brain disorders, Neuralink last year unveiled tiny brain “threads” in a chip that is long-lasting, usable at home, and has the potential to replace cumbersome devices currently used as brain-machine interfaces.

In February this year, Musk promised an “awesome” update by Neuralink.

“The profound impact of high bandwidth, high precision neural interfaces is underappreciated. Neuralink may have this in a human as soon as this year,” Musk had tweeted.

“Wait until you see the next version vs what was presented last year. It’s awesome,” he added.

The technology has a module that sits outside the head, behind the ear, and receives information from “threads” embedded in the brain.

Controlled by an iPhone app, the chip called “N1 sensor” with just a USB port coming out can have as many as 3,072 electrodes per array distributed across 96 “threads” — each “thread” smaller than the tiniest human hair.

The chip which will be wireless in the future can read, transmit high-volume data and amplify signals from the brain.

“This has the potential to solve several brain-related diseases. The idea is to understand and treat brain disorders, preserve and enhance your own brain and create a well-aligned future,” Musk told the audience at the launch event last year.

Musk founded Neuralink in 2016 but has only held one major public presentation.

However, more details about Neuralink will be presented at an event on August 28.

US FDA approves blood plasma therapy to treat Covid-19

0

Despite experts raising doubts over the plasma therapy to treat Covid-19, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for convalescent plasma to treat the deadly respiratory disease.

In a statement on Sunday, the FDA said that “known and potential benefits of the product outweigh the known and potential risks of the product”.

According to a CNN report, the FDA said more than 70,000 patients had been treated with convalescent plasma.

At a White House briefing on Sunday, President Donald Trump said: “Today, I am pleased to make a truly historic announcement in our battle against the ‘China virus’ that will save countless lives.”

“Today’s action will dramatically increase access to this treatment,” the President said, adding that he has directed the FDA to approve the EUA for convalescent plasma therapy.

According to media reports last week, the FDA had put on hold the emergency use authorization for blood plasma to treat Covid-19.

In a report, The New York Times said the FDA approval for plasma therapy was on hold and “more data is under review and the approval could still be issued in the near future, according to H. Clifford Lane, the clinical director at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases”.

Top health officials including Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, have cautioned that available data wasn’t strong enough to support emergency approval.

Plasma is the pale liquid that remains after red and white cells are removed from the blood.

The convalescent plasma therapy has gained much traction in several countries including India, where several lives have been saved with the therapy.

Trump later accused some health officials of playing politics regarding an emergency use authorization for convalescent plasma.

When asked about the FDA not having granted a EUA, Trump said the “reason was political”, the CNN report said.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, however, said studies involving 70,000 volunteers justified the move.

“The data we gathered suggests that patients who were treated early in their disease course, within three days of being diagnosed, with plasma containing high levels of antibodies, benefited the most from treatment.

“We saw about a 35 percent better survival in the patients who benefited most from the treatment,” Azar told the White House briefing.

Plasma donated by people who’ve survived Covid-19 has high levels of antibodies and is considered safe.

The development comes as the US still accounts for the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.

As of Monday morning, the overall number of cases stood at 5,701,557, with 176,797 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Oculus users slam Facebook for new account login policy

0

The users of Facebook Oculus have expressed outrage over the new policy where they need a Facebook account to log into their VR headsets.

Facebook said that starting from October, everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.

“If you’re an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts,” the company said.

If you’re an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.

“After January 1, 2023, we will end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account,” the social network announced last week.

The move did not go well with the users and privacy advocacy groups who took to Reddit and Twitter to express their anger.

“Facebook requires Oculus Rift users to log into Facebook, breaking yet another privacy promise,” the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) tweeted.

An Oculus user posted on Reddit: “I’m mostly surprised that they haven’t done this with Whatsapp or Instagram thus far, but they are doing it for Oculus accounts”.

Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey replied: “I am already getting heat from users and media outlets who say this policy change proves I was lying when I consistently said this wouldn’t happen, or at least that it was a guarantee I wasn’t in a position to make”.

“I want to make clear that those promises were approved by Facebook in that moment and on an ongoing basis, and I really believed it would continue to be the case for a variety of reasons,” he added.

Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in 2014.

Luckey said that “I guarantee that you won’t need to log into your Facebook account every time you wanna use the Oculus Rift”.

“You will not need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift. I promise”.

Earlier, the company said in a statement that all future unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account.

Facebook in July said it won’t be shipping new features for its entry-level VR headset Oculus Go moving forward, and no longer accept new Oculus Go apps or app updates into the Store after December 4, 2020.

The popular Oculus Quest has redefined the VR category.

People have spent more than $100 million on Quest content and more than 10 titles have generated over $2 million in revenue on Quest.

CPL 2020: Zouks, Knight Riders extend winning run

0

It was a game that went down to the wire, but ultimately debutant Chemar Holder kept his nerve to help St Lucia Zouks defend 13 runs off the final over to win their third consecutive match in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Nicholas Pooran and Sherfane Rutherford threatened to win the match for the Guyana Amazon Warriors at times, but ultimately the Zouks prevailed in a low-scoring thriller at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba on Sunday.

Opting to bat, Zouks rode on a brilliant half-century from Roston Chase (66 off 51 balls), followed by some handy contributions from Mohammad Nabi (27 off 24) and Javelle Green (19 off 17) as they posted a respectable total of 144/7 in their stipulated 20 overs.

However, Warriors struggled in the chase right from the start and it was only Pooran who could hold the ground as he fought a lone battle by contributing 68 runs. But his efforts went in vain as his team could manage 134 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted overs and went on to lose the match by 10 runs.

Earlier, in the first game of the day, some brutal death hitting from Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard helped Trinbago Knight Riders easily defeat Barbados Tridents by 19 runs.

Batting first, Knight Riders posted 185/3, this season’s highest score with Bravo and Pollard playing brilliant knocks of 54 off 36 balls and 41 off just 17 respectively.

Chasing such a big total, Tridents did start well with openers Johnson Charles and Shai Hope stitching a 68-run partnership. However, once Hope got out for 36, wickets started falling at regular intervals. Charles did try to keep his team in the hunt but following his dismissal for 52, Knight Riders’ bowlers tightened the screws and restricted Tridents to 166/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Brief scores: St Lucia Zouks 144/7 (Chase 66; Tahir 3/22) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 134/8 (Pooran 68; Kuggeleijn 3/24) by 10 runs

Brief scores: Trinbago Knight Riders 185/3 (DM Bravo 54; Nurse 1/20) beat Barbados Tridents 166/6 (Charles 52; Fawad 1/14) by 19 runs

Newly-signed Pjanic tests positive for COVID-19, confirms Barcelona

0

Barcelona FC has confirmed that newly-signed midfielder Miralem Pjanic has tested positive for coronavirus. The club has further informed that Pjanic is in ‘good health’ and is self-isolating at home.

“Miralem Pjanic has tested positive in a PCR taken on Saturday 22 August after feeling a little unwell. The player is in good health and is self-isolating at home,” the club said in a statement.

“The player will therefore not be traveling to Barcelona for 15 days when he will be expected to report for duty with the FC Barcelona team,” it added.

Pjanic recently officially joined Barcelona, with the club announcing in June that he would be coming to Spain from Juventus. Following the conclusion of Juventus and Barcelona’s Champions League campaigns, Pjanic was now free to join the club, but he will not yet travel to Barcelona after testing positive for the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, the Bosnian posted a message in Italian on Instagram which read: “Fortunately, I’m fine and asymptomatic. But if there is one thing I have learned, it is that we should never take anything for granted, not even the things that we consider the most routine. The life we are living now is teaching us that. We should respect the rules and be careful without panicking.”

The 30-year-old made a total of 178 appearances for Juventus after joining from Roma in 2016.

No spectators at Argentine football matches at least till 2021: sports minister

0

Football matches in Argentina are likely to be held without spectators at the stadiums at least until early 2021, country’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Matias Lammens has said.

Matches have been suspended since March 17, three days before President Alberto Fernandez declared mandatory lockdown measures to contain the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, reports Xinhua news agency.

On August 10, officials authorized the restart of training, though they are yet to announce when national championship matches will begin.

In an interview published on Sunday by the regional daily La Capital in Mar del Plata, a city in Buenos Aires province, Lammens was asked if summer tournament matches will take place “with or without spectators”.

“With spectators, I don’t think so. If you look at what’s happening in Europe, where football resumed more than a month ago, they aren’t even assessing the possibility of playing with spectators,” Lammens said.

“So I think it’s unlikely, at least this summer,” he added.

Bayern Munich beat PSG to win 6th Champions League title

0

After a historic season, Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Estadio da Luz and crowned its impressive trajectory with the sixth UEFA Champions League title.

On the pitch on Sunday, the two coaches made changes in relation to the last game, with the Bavarian Hansi Flick going against expectations and selecting Kingsley Coman, who came from the PSG academy, in place of Ivan Perisic, reports Xinhua news agency.

And as in a script worthy of the best films, it was precisely the French striker who was the executioner of the team that formed him for football with the title goal in the 14th minute of the second half with an accurate header after Joshua Kimmich cross.

Before that, the game started a lot studied in the first minutes, with the two teams analyzing the opponent, looking for the attack with great care, without taking risks until the first 15 minutes of the game.

From there, what was seen was Bayern with greater possession of the ball and total control of the midfield against a PSG depending on long balls raised to the offensive sector to exploit any mistake by Bayern through the individual talent of their three front men: Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappe, and Angel Di Maria.

The Frenchmen’s best chance was in the 17th-minute of the first half, with Neymar receiving the ball from Mbappe on the left side and hitting twice for the goal, for two great saves by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Bavarian response came strong after 21 minutes when Robert Lewandowski received his back inside the area, spun on his own body, and sent the ball over Keylor Navas’ crossbar.

From there, the two teams alternated attacks without real danger to the opposing goal and the first half ended with the Bayern players trying to influence the referee for a penalty, however, unlike 1975 final, the referee refused to be swayed by the Bavarians.

Bayern’s dominance intensified at the start of the second half until, on 14 minutes, ex-PSG Kingsley Coman headed in, defining the final score.

Bayern Munich still had a few more chances to extend the score, but all were contained by the defense led by defender Thiago Silva.

PSG exchanged a few pieces and managed to create goal chances – all of them drowned out by Neuer, who made a game to go down in history.

But the destination was already sealed and, after five minutes of extra-time, the party of the Germans from Bayern Munich started by raising their sixth “eared”, being the first UEFA Champions League earner to win all the matches of the biggest European club tournament.

Eng vs Pak: Ali scores gritty ton but Anderson’s five-for keeps Eng ahead

0

Skipper Azhar Ali scored a gritty unbeaten hundred but Pakistan still remained under the pump at the end of Day 3 of the rain-affected third Test between them and hosts England at the Ageas Bowl on Sunday.

At Stump’s, Pakistan was all out for 273, with Ali not out on 141 from 272 balls, his patient knock laced with 21 fours.

For England, pace spearhead James Anderson returned best figures of 5/56 and could have had at least three more had catches not been dropped off his bowling.

Wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan also scored 53 as he and Ali added 138 runs for the sixth wicket after Pakistan were 75/5 at one stage.

Veteran Anderson added to his three wickets from the second day as he removed Asad Shafiq who was caught at slip by skipper Joe Root for just five runs.

Spinner Dom Bess had left-hander Fawad Alam caught behind by Jos Buttler for 21 before Ali and Rizwan joined hands to steady the ship.

Chris Woakes broke the stand as he dismissed Rizwan and Stuart Broad removed Yasir Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi with Buttler taking a stunning diving catch behind the stumps to send Afridi back.

Anderson then saw three catches dropped off his bowling in less than two overs but finally got his fifer when Naseem Shah was caught by Dom Sibley at slip.

Earlier, England tailenders helped the hosts pile up 583/8d before Anderson knocked off Pakistan’s top three towards the end of the second day.

Buttler was dismissed by Fawad Alam, who had never bowled before in Test cricket. Looking to steer the ball along the ground, Buttler ended up offering it straight back into the hands of the bowler, thus ending his innings on 152 off 311 balls.

Chris Woakes, Dom Bess, and Stuart Broad then put up a combined 53 runs before England captain Joe Root declared the innings.

England then managed to squeeze in about 11 overs. Shan Masood was the first to go, falling to James Anderson yet again after making just 4. Masood’s opening partner Abid Ali was then caught in the slips in Anderson’s very next over after which captain Azhar Ali and Babar Azam stuck around nervously for some time.

Brief scores: England 583/9d (Crawley 267, Buttler 152; Fawad Alam 2/46) vs Pakistan 273 (Ali 141 not out, Anderson 5/56)

The government’s Chief Economic Adviser K.V. Subramanian on Sunday said that India’s banking system is proportionately smaller than the size of the economy and it needs to grow for the country to become a $5 trillion economy.

Giving the Bandhan Bank’s Anniversary Lecture, Subramanian said that the reason for the slowdown in the economy which started last year was due to problems in the banking sector, rather than the fallout of demonetization and GST.

“For the size of its economy, the banking sector in India is very small. In order for India to be a $5 trillion dollar economy, the banking sector needs to be proportionate… at least proportionate to the size of its economy if not bigger than the proportionality,” he said.

About the problems in the banking sector, he said that the major issues in the sector are bad loans, risk aversion, and corporate lending.

He also emphasized on the use of technology by banks and said that the banks with low IT adoption were more prone to bad loans.

On the crisis brought about by the pandemic, the CEA said: “I feel every crisis is an opportunity. So I see this situation as an opportunity.”
