Scott Carson extends stay at Manchester City

0

Experienced goalkeeper Scott Carson has extended his loan deal with Manchester City by another year. Carson joined last summer to become a third-choice goalkeeper and is yet to make a first-team appearance.

He originally moved to the Etihad on a year-long loan from Derby County last summer, said City in a statement on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old has subsequently spent the past 12 months providing valuable back-up to Ederson and the now-departed Claudio Bravo in the first team goalkeeping department.

Capped four times by England, Carson boasts a wealth of experience from his 17-year career and counts West Bromwich Albion, Liverpool, and Turkish outfit Bursaspor amongst his former teams.

Before joining City on loan in the summer of 2019, the Whitehaven-born keeper had spent the previous four seasons at Pride Park where he made more than 150 appearances for the Rams.

Hina Khan: Don’t see format, content changing in TV

Actress Hina Khan, who has been a part of television for over a decade, says she does not see the format and content of the medium changing because this is what the audience demands.

At a time when the webspace is booming with content-driven projects, why are the audience still watching shows on the small screen that seem regressive?

Hina, who essays the title role in the fifth season of the superhit TV show, “Naagin”, feels the audience does not like to watch shows on the small screen that are a “little progressive”.

“OTT platforms are there, and I am a fan of OTT platforms. I do watch a lot of shows on OTT platforms. I don’t see the content changing (on television). I don’t really see that happening because people like what they watch and this is why we get ratings — because they are happy. Is it regressive? Our show (Naagin) is completely different,” Hina told IANS.

She said that “Naagin” is Indian folklore and people love watching it because they normally don’t get to watch such shows.

“People really look up to it. Since we talk about family drama on television, they have a lot of options. Even if we try to make a new show which is a little progressive about women and women empowerment, I don’t think people will watch it or like it,” Hina said.

The actress, who made a transition into films in 2020, says the only thing she sees is that people “will now or later completely move on to iPads and their phones and watch all the soaps there”.

“Nothing is going to change in (terms of) content. When you talk about television, Naagin’ is completely different. It is a supernatural show. Other than that I don’t see the format or content changing on television because this is the audience’s demand. It’s all (about) demand and supply. If they stop watching it, they will stop making such shows,” she concluded.

Tendulkar bats for children’s health along with Mumbai hospital

0

Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been making contributions to helping people during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Besides making donations towards the PM-CARES Fund and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Maharashtra), Tendulkar has been partnering with various NGOs and hospitals to help underprivileged people.

In his latest initiative, the 47-year-old partnered with SRCC Children’s Hospital in Mumbai to help underprivileged children.

Three months ago, a 14-year-old boy, Rakesh (name changed), had Acute Transverse Myelitis. He was unable to walk and had to spend about 12 hours on the road as he was refused admission by most of the hospitals for fear of COVID-19.

Rakesh, who comes from an economically backward family as his father Santosh( name changed) is a milkman, spent 12 hours without any food and water till he reached SRCC Children’s Hospital run by Narayana Health. After spending two months at the hospital for treatment of the same, Rakesh can now walk slowly and is keen on getting back to his studies.

Similarly, a two-year-old boy Salman (name changed) was diagnosed with a liver tumor. His father, Anwar (name changed), is the only earning member of the family and is an employee at a computer shop. The family struggled to arrange for finances for Salman’s treatment. He was then admitted to the hospital, and post-operation remained in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on ventilator support.

The parents of several such children, who are now hale and hearty, have expressed their gratitude to Tendulkar.

“Rakesh is slowly back on his feet after having spent over two months at the SRCC, It will take a while for him to get back to normal since he was suffering from paralysis but we are happy at this progress,” said Rakesh’s mother.

“We would like to thank SRCC and Sachin sir for helping us with the finances as it was difficult with my husband’s income to meet the expenses.”

“Salman is now fit and fine for which we have no words for the kind of support given by Sachin sir. We learned it later that he was the one behind in giving us all the financial help. We are totally indebted to Sachin sir as we had once upon a time given up for lack of finances”, said Salman’s father.

Speaking about the association, Dr. Soonu Udani, Medical Director of SRCC Children’s Hospital, said: “Sachin Tendulkar through his foundation has been a Godsend to us. Just like us, they are equally passionate about children’s healthcare. This partnership is an ever-evolving partnership. They understand what we are doing and the extent of support they have given has been a tremendous help to us.”

She elaborated that Sachin, through his foundation, was helping address a need in children’s healthcare that not too many NGOs extend a helping hand with.

Covid-19 may not spread through breast milk: Study

0

New research adds to the growing body of evidence that Covid-19 was unable to cause infection in the breastfed infant.

The study, published in the journal JAMA, examined 64 samples of breast milk collected by the ‘Mommy’s Milk Human Milk Research Biorepository’ from 18 women across the US infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Although one sample tested positive for viral RNA, subsequent tests found that the virus was unable to replicate, and thus unable to cause infection in the breastfed infant.

“Detection of viral RNA does not equate to infection. It has to grow and multiply in order to be infectious and we did not find that in any of our samples,” said study researcher Christina Chambers from the University of California, San Diego in the US.

“Our findings suggest breast milk itself is not likely a source of infection for the infant,” Chambers added.

The current recommendations to prevent transmission while breastfeeding is hand hygiene and sterilizing pumping equipment after each use.

“In the absence of data, some women infected with SARS-CoV-2 have chosen to just not breastfeed at all,” said study author Grace Aldrovandi form the University of California, Los Angeles.

“We hope our results and future studies will give women the reassurance needed for them to breastfeed. Human milk provides invaluable benefits to mom and baby,” Aldrovandi added,

Early breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome and obesity in children, as well as improved immune health and performance on intelligence tests.

In mothers, breastfeeding has been associated with lower risks for breast and ovarian cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

The researchers also mimicked conditions of the Holder pasteurization process commonly used in human donor milk banks by adding SARS-CoV-2 to breast milk samples from two different donors who were not infected.

The samples were heated to 62.5 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes and then cooled to four degrees Celsius. Following pasteurization, the infectious virus was not detected in either sample.

“This is a very positive finding for donor milk, which so many infants, especially those born premature, rely on. Our findings fill in some important gaps, but more studies are needed with larger sample sizes to confirm these findings,” Chambers said.

The researchers said that future work will not only look at whether breast milk is free of the virus, but also whether it contains active antiviral components.

For example, antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 that women may produce after exposure to the virus and then transfer to their infants through breast milk, protecting them from Covid-19.

Earlier in this month, a study published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, found that pasteurizing human milk inactivates the virus that causes Covid-19.

Airbnb confidentially files documents for IPO in US

0

Home rental company Airbnb has filed documents confidentially with the US regulators to begin its initial public offering (IPO).

The disclosure comes at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic appeared to have put the San Francisco-headquartered company’s plan to go public on hold.

“Today, Airbnb confidentially submitted a draft Registration Statement on Form S-1 to the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) relating to the proposed initial public offering of its common stock,” the company said on Wednesday.

The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined, it added.

The initial public offering is likely to take place after the SEC completes its review process, subject to market, and other conditions.

Airbnb’s listing is expected to be one of the largest this year. The company’s decision to begin the process of filing for an IPO only indicates that it is seeing signs of recovery in the core market that got badly bruised due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Citing the pandemic, Airbnb had earlier decided to cut about 25 percent of its staff.

“Our business has not recovered, but we are seeing encouraging signs,” Airbnb said in July.

On July 8, guests booked more than one million nights’ worth of future stays at Airbnb listings around the world.

“It’s the first day in more than four months, since March 3, that the 1 million nights threshold has been reached,” the company had said.

Learned value of short distance passes in 3rd Youth Oly Games, says Vivek

0

Midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad has been in the thick of things since making his senior Indian hockey team debut in January 2018. The 20-year-old has played a key role in the team’s victories at the FIH Series Finals and the FIH Olympic Qualifiers last year.

However, leading India to a silver medal at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games will always be one of the most special moments in his career. The midfielder has expressed that he understood the importance of short distance passes in that competition.

“In the 3rd Youth Olympic Games, we decided that we should move forward through short distance passes on the pitch. We felt that it’s always better to stick to short distance passes and we were successful with this tactic in the tournament. Even in the senior international circuit, I applied the tactic of short distance passes and it has helped me. That was one of my big learnings from the 3rd Youth Olympic Games,” said Prasad.

In his short senior international career so far, Prasad has acquired a rich vein of experience of playing in front of big crowds. The youngster spoke to his seniors about the things he needs to keep in mind while playing in front of big crowds during the initial matches of his career.

“There’s an excitement and a sense of nervousness while playing in front of big crowds, especially in front of our home crowd. We tend to play much better in front of our own home crowd,” said the 20-year-old.

“When I initially joined the Indian team, I spoke to my seniors about how to play in front of big crowds and they told me that if I focus only on my game then I will not be distracted by anything else. Now, I am comfortable playing in front of big crowds,” he added.

Prasad, who has adjudged the FIH Rising Star of the Year 2019, also spoke about the aspects that have helped him evolve as a player.

“I have always worked very hard during practice sessions and I have only focussed on the present. I don’t think too much about the future. I follow all the directives given to me by our coaches diligently and that has helped me become a better player,” said the midfielder.

When asked about the activities he carried out during the 14-day self-isolation period after returning to the Sports Authority of India campus from home, Prasad said he mostly focussed on his fitness drills.

“It was really nice to meet my family during our break. We carried out our 14-day self-isolation period once we got back to the SAI campus in Bengaluru. We carried out the workout schedules given to us in our rooms. I mostly spent my time focussing on fitness drills and watched television as well,” said the midfielder.

Texas-based startup OnwardMobility has announced its agreement to release a new Android-based BlackBerry smartphone with a physical QWERTY keyboard and 5G support in the first half of 2021.

Under the terms of the agreement, BlackBerry has granted OnwardMobility the right to develop, engineer, and bring to market a BlackBerry 5G mobile device.

“BlackBerry is thrilled OnwardMobility will deliver a BlackBerry 5G smartphone device with a physical keyboard leveraging our high standards of trust and security synonymous with our brand,” John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry, said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We are excited that customers will experience the enterprise and government level security and mobile productivity the new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will offer”.

“BlackBerry smartphones are known for protecting communications, privacy, and data. This is an incredible opportunity for OnwardMobility to bring next-generation 5G devices,” said Peter Franklin, CEO of OnwardMobility.

However, no other information regarding the device has been shared as of yet and it is not clear if this will be a flagship device or just another mid-ranger.

BlackBerry exited the business in 2016 following years of declining sales due to the rise in popularity of the iPhone and Android smartphones.

Ellie Goulding doesn’t remember much of her twenties

Singer Ellie Goulding, now 33, says she spent her twenties pretty much in chaos.

“The past five years have been really poignant in my life. I spent my twenties pretty much in mad chaos. I don’t remember much of it. I think I blurred a lot of it out,” she told etonline.com.

“I’ve been around the world a few times. I played so many shows. I’ve been to cities I can’t even remember. I can’t even think of all the countries I’ve been to at this point. I was on a constant roll. I was taking it for granted because I assumed it would just be my cycle forever, touring,” she added.

After her Delirium World Tour ended in 2017, though, the singer “went through quite a few changes” that led her to take “a bunch of time off”.

“I parted ways with my management, I moved to New York. I went through quite a few changes,” she recalled.

“So I really decided to take a bunch of time off. I needed it. I needed to reflect on everything. I needed to figure out who I was without all that stuff in the background, touring and madness and celebrity-ness and all that stuff. I had to become a human that wasn’t just a touring robot,” she added.

Samsung leads global DRAM memory chip market in Q2

0

Samsung has maintained its dominant position in the global DRAM memory chip market with a 43.5 percent share in the second quarter, a new report has said.

Although Samsung’s market share was down 0.6 percentage point from three months earlier, its revenue increased 13.8 percent to $7.4 billion in the June quarter, according to data from market research firm TrendForce.

Dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) is a type of semiconductor memory that stores each bit of data in a memory cell consisting of a tiny capacitor and a transistor, both typically based on metal-oxide-semiconductor technology.

Samsung’s local competitor SK Hynix Inc. came in second with a 30.1 percent market share in the second quarter.

US chipmaker Micron Technology came third with a 21 percent market share, report Yonhap news agency.

“The DRAM market saw an increase in both prices and bit shipments, leading to a double-digit rise in revenue for the three suppliers,” TrendForce said.

“On the matter of profitability, all three leading suppliers posted an increase in their operating margins in the second quarter of 2020 as the overall average selling price rose by around 10 percent”.

Samsung’s operating margin reached 41 percent in the second quarter, up from 32 percent three months ago.

The global DRAM market collected $17.1 billion in revenue in the second quarter, up 15.4 percent from three months ago.

However, TrendForce said that DRAM suppliers are likely to suffer a decline in profitability in the third quarter of the year as chip prices are expected to drop while product shipments stay flat.

Black-owned business with 50 employees can apply for FB grant

0

Facebook has announced that any majority of Black-owned businesses with 50 or fewer employees can apply for the new grant in the US.

Earlier this summer, the social network committed an additional $100 million investment to support Black-owned businesses, creators, and nonprofits in the US.

“Of that, we’re allocating $40 million in grants to support 10,000 Black-owned businesses in the US,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Facebook.

Facebook said it is partnering with Accenture and the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) to get these grants to Black-owned businesses quickly.

In March, Facebook launched a $100 million global grant program to help businesses and earmarked 50 percent of the grants in the US ($20 million) for minority, women, and veteran-owned businesses.

“Black-owned businesses have faced systemic barriers for generations – and the huge amount of interest we received from these businesses confirmed just how enormous the challenges they continue to face really are,” Sandberg said in a statement on Wednesday.

The company opened grant applications for Black creators a few weeks ago – dedicating $25 million to support the next generation of Black voices on Facebook and Instagram in the US.

The program will provide them with access to funding, education, development resources, and local activities to help them grow their community and establish a business.

Himachal Assembly to have polycarbonate dividers

0

It will virtually be a divided house this time in Himachal Pradesh!

Amid Covid-19 outbreak, polycarbonate dividers will stand between the members during the 12-day Monsoon Session of the Legislative Assembly beginning September 7.

On the demand of the Opposition Congress, the BJP government is going to hold the session for the first time amid the pandemic by adapting strict heath protocols to check its spread among the 68 lawmakers and their staff. The session will have 10 sittings.

For this, Speaker Vipin Parmar has asked authorities to install polycarbonate separators in compliance with the social distancing norm.

Also, the lawmakers and the ministers have been asked to curtail their staff during the session. And there will be a ban on the visitors to attend the proceedings of the House.

Such preventing steps for holding the session will be the first in the history of this elegant British-era building, earlier known as the Council Chamber that was opened by Lord Reading on August 27, 1925.

The use of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation for killing the virus in the air is also being considered, officials told IANS.

Social distancing norms will also be observed in the seating arrangement in the officials’ gallery and the press gallery, while a limited number of secretariat officials will be allowed during the House proceedings.

“We are adopting all health protocols as framed by the MHA and these will be enforced strictly,” Speaker Parmar told IANS.

He said transparent six-foot-tall polycarbonate sheets would be installed in the middle of the twin-sharing seats of the members.

The Speaker said the ministers have been asked to reduce the staff accompanying them during the session. Even there will be the minimum presence of government officials in the Assembly.

The last session of the Assembly has adjourned abruptly on March 23 with the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Rahul Bose: I have no ambition, I have a lot of desire

0

Actor Rahul Bose is happy to lead an easy life with a strong sense of privacy and says he has no ambition and is not in a rush to reach anywhere.

Asked if the ongoing pandemic made him reassess his life goals, Rahul told IANS: “Not at all. I reassessed my life many years ago. I have understood where my happiness lies.”

“I choose my friendships carefully. I live an open, easy life with a very strong sense of privacy about certain matters. I don’t push myself on people. I don’t expect people to push themselves on me. So, I have a very harmonious relationship with the universe,” he added.

The actor continued: “I have no ambition. I don’t want to go anywhere or become anything. I have a lot of desire. There’s a big difference between ambition and desire. So for me, spiritually and emotionally, it (the pandemic) has taught me nothing more than I already know about myself and the world. I’ve been very comfortable with all the demands that it has put on me emotionally.”

However, there was one thing that disturbs Rahul.

“The only adjustment that has been, which has been very challenging, is to see the pain of the Indians trying to go home. The severe pain of millions and millions of Indians just trying to go home. And that is not anywhere related to the pandemic. It could have been completely avoided. So that was a very challenging thing,” said Rahul, who got associated with Discovery for a campaign #KeepExploring to mark its 25th anniversary in India.

Google removes thousands of apps for spreading fake poll info

0

Google has removed thousands of apps for engaging in deceptive behavior, distributing misleading information such as altering media clips or sending fake text messages in the run-up to November presidential election in the US.

The company said that as mobile apps disseminate voting information and increasingly support voting activity, it is on the job to ensure safety and transparency for app users.

“At Google Play, our policies are designed to promote transparency for our users and help protect against misinformation. This work is critically important when it comes to safeguarding elections as people use apps to research candidates, register to vote or find a polling place,” said Camille Stewart, Head of Security Policy and Election Integrity at Google.

In November last year, Google implemented changes that require any app that shares official government information to be clear about the source of that information and the app’s affiliation with the government.

“This information should be apparent from the app’s description. We also work with governments to verify their apps so people can be confident when reading and engaging with government information,” Google said in a statement on Wednesday.

To promote transparency in news publishing, Google recently introduced minimum requirements that apps must meet in order to be classified in the News category on Google Play.

These include transparency requirements about the source and ownership of in-app news content, requirements applicable to news subscription services, and requirements regarding the use of affiliate marketing and ad revenue.

“We’ve also created dedicated teams across Google Play solely focused on elections to provide additional support and adapt to the changing landscape,” the tech giant explained.

This includes additional support for government agencies, specially trained app reviewers, and a safety team to address election threats and abuse.

Jamaica Tallawahs, Guyana Warriors open their account in CPL 2020

0

Asif Ali finished the game in style as the Jamaica Tallawahs middle-order recovered from a top-order collapse to make light work of a tricky target against the St Lucia Zouks in their opening game of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020.

In other games of the day, Guyana Amazon Warriors defeated St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by three wickets at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Against Tallawahs, Darren Sammy-led Zouks posted 158/7 in their stipulated 20 overs, riding on a 42-ball 52-run knock from Roston Chase. His innings included four 4s and two 6s.

The Tallawahs struggled early during their chase, losing two wickets for just 13 inside the first five overs. However, Glenn Phillips and captain Rovman Powell then steadied the ship and took their team to 78/3 at the drinks break. The game was in the balance as Tallawahs needed a further 83.

But Ali (47*) took off from their own and along with Andre Russell (16) and Carlos Brathwaite (18* off 9), took his team across the line with seven balls to spare.

In the second match of the day, Warriors restricted Patriots to just 127/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Only Lewis (30) and Ben Dunk (29) made some noticeable contributions as other batters from their team struggled against some tight bowling from Warriors.

During the chase, Chris Green-led Warriors also didn’t find it easy and lost seven wickets to chase down the total with three overs to spare. For them, Shimron Hetmyer scored 71 runs off just 44 balls with the help of eight 4s and three 6s.

Brief Scores: Jamaica Tallawahs 160/5 (Asif Ali 47*; Kesrick Williams 2/32) beat St Lucia Zouks 158/7 (Roston Chase 52; Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman 2/25) by five wickets.

7 Signs and Symptoms of Protein Deficiency

0

Symptoms of protein deficiency cannot be sidetracked. Both adult and children do need undergo protein deficiency test. To ascertain their protein levels.

Proteins are important nutrients as they help in building muscles, skin, enzymes and hormones, and also play an essential role in all body tissues. Symptoms of Protein Deficiency are manifold.

Most foods contain some protein. As a result, true protein deficiency is rare in developed countries. Yet, some people may still be at risk.

Deficiency does lead to several health issues, while low protein intake may also be a concern, as it can indeed lead to subtle changes in one’s body over a period of time.

What Is Protein Deficiency?

Protein deficiency is when one’s intake is unable to meet the body’s requirements. Protein deficiency symptoms cannot be overlooked.

World over particularly in developing and under developed countries people do suffer from protein deficiency as they cannot afford nutritious food.

Certain people in developed countries also do face such risk. This is so in the case of people who have an imbalanced diet, as well as institutionalized older people and also hospitalized patients. Of course, true protein deficiency is uncommon in the Western world, some people get very low amounts from their diet.

Too little protein may indeed cause changes in one’s body composition that does develop over a long period of time, such as muscle wasting.

The most severe form of protein deficiency is referred to as kwashiorkor. It most often occurs in children in developing countries where famine as well as imbalanced diets are rather common.

Protein deficiency can of course affect almost all aspects of one’s body function.

1. Edema

Edema, characterized by swollen and puffy skin, is a symptom of kwashiorkor. Doctors do carry out protein deficiency test.

It is supposed to be due to low amounts of human serum albumin. O account of low human serum albumin levels, severe protein deficiency leads to lower oncotic pressure. This results in fluid accumulation in tissues, thus causing swelling.

Protein deficiency can also cause fluid buildup inside the abdominal cavity. A bloated belly is indeed characteristic sign of kwashiorkor.

2. Fatty Liver

Another common symptom of kwashiorkor is a fatty liver, or fat accumulation in liver cells .If it is not treated, the condition may develop into fatty liver disease, thus causing inflammation, liver scarring and potentially liver failure.

Fatty liver happens to be a common condition in obese people, as well as those who consume a lot of alcohol.

3. Skin, Hair and Nail Problems

Protein deficiency does often leave its mark on the skin, hair as well as nails, which are largely made of protein.

Kwashiorkor in children is distinguished by flaky or splitting skin, redness and patches of de-pigmented skin. It leads to thinning, faded hair color, hair loss (alopecia) and brittle nails. These are health problems of severe protein deficiency.

4. Loss of Muscle Mass

Muscles are largest reservoir of protein in one’s body.

When dietary protein is in short supply, the body does tend to take protein from skeletal muscles in order to preserve more important tissues and body functions. As a result, lack of protein leads to muscle wasting over time.

Even moderate protein insufficiency may cause muscle wasting, especially in elderly people.

5. Greater Risk of Bone Fractures

Muscles as well as bones get affected due to low protein levels. Low consumption of protein weaken the bones and increase the risk of fractures. Studies have shown that postmenopausal women found that a higher protein intake was associated with a lower risk of hip fractures. Animal-source protein has a lot of health benefits.

6. Stunted Growth in Children

Protein is essential for body growth. Its deficiency or insufficiency is harmful to children as their growing bodies need protein.

Stunted growth is due to childhood malnutrition.

7. Increased Severity of Infections

A protein deficit can damage immune system.

Impaired immune function can cause infections, which is a common symptom of severe protein deficiency.
