Qantas reports $2.8bn revenue hit

0

Australia’s flag carrier Qantas on Thursday reported a $2.8 billion revenue hit for the second half of the 2020 financial year due to the crippling effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement to shareholders, the airline posted an $89 million before tax profit for the 12 months ending June 30, 2020, down 91 percent on the year before, reports Xinhua news agency.

During the first half of the financial year before the pandemic grounded global travel to a halt, Qantas recorded a $553.8 million profit before tax.

“We were on track for another profit above A$1 billion ($718 million) when this crisis struck,” Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said.

“The fact that we still delivered a full-year underlying profit shows how quickly we adjusted when revenue collapsed.”

The company attributed the “minimized” financial impact to swiftly implemented cost-cutting measures, and placing much of the flying business into a form of hibernation, reporting that from April 2020 to the end of June, company revenue fell 82 percent while cash costs were reduced by 75 percent.

“The impact of Covid-19 on all airlines is clear. It’s devastating and it will be a question of survival for many,” Joyce said.

“What makes Qantas different is that we entered this crisis with a strong balance sheet and we moved fast to put ourselves in a good position to wait for the recovery.”

US trade panel opens probe into Apple for patent infringement

0

As Apple became the first US company to touch the $2 trillion mark, the US International Trade Commission (USITC) announced to launch an investigation to find whether its mobile devices and Macs violate patents owned by Japanese consumer electronics company Maxell.

The USITC on Wednesday voted to institute an investigation of certain mobile electronic devices and laptop computers and identified “Apple Inc. of Cupertino, CA, as the respondent in this investigation”.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Maxell of Kyoto, Japan, on July 17.

Maxell filed a complaint with the USITC, alleging that Apple’s mobile devices, tablets, smartwatches, and laptop computers violate patents related to passcode unlocking, WiFi assist, mobile communications, facial recognition in the Photos app, and more.

“The complaint alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the US and sale of certain mobile electronic devices and laptop computers that infringe patents asserted by the complainant,” the USITC said in a statement.

“The complainant requests that the USITC issue a limited exclusion order and a cease and desist order”.

The USITC will make a final determination in the investigation as early as possible.

Within 45 days after the institution of the investigation, the USITC will set a target date for completing the investigation.

Maxell manufactures consumer electronics like batteries, wireless charging products, storage devices, LCD and laser projectors, and functional materials.

Apple was yet to comment on the USITC statement.

Female doctor murdered in Agra, suspect in police custody

0

The body of a female doctor of Agra’s S.N. Medical College has been found after her family lodged a complaint that she was missing, police said, adding that a suspect was in custody.

Agra police recovered the body Yogita Gautam on Wednesday from the highway near Bamrauli Katara.

Her brother, Mohinder Kumar Gautam had filed a complaint against Vivek Tiwari for abducting his sister at the local M.M. Gate police station.

A team of the SOG Jalaun took Tiwari into custody at Urai. He has been brought to Agra for further investigation.

Senior police officials said the victim’s head had been hit by some heavy object and her sports shoes were lying around the murder scene.

The officials said several teams had been constituted late Wednesday evening to crack the case.

Since then, a number of crucial pieces of evidence against the accused were found.

Her parents from Delhi reached Agra late Wednesday evening.

The accused Tiwari was one year senior to the victim. Sources said he was pressuring her to marry him for the past year.

The police said that during early interrogation, he kept changing his statements.

Yogita’s colleagues have said that she was brilliant as a gynecologist and was also a part of the Covid-19 team.

Facebook purges several Pages, accounts tied to QAnon, Antifa

0

Facebook has removed thousands of Pages, Groups, and accounts on its main app and Instagram tied to offline anarchist groups that support violent acts amidst protests, US-based militia organizations like Antifa, and far-right conspiracy theory group QAnon.

The social network said it removed over 790 groups, 100 Pages, and 1,500 ads tied to QAnon from Facebook, blocked over 300 hashtags across Facebook and Instagram and additionally imposed restrictions on over 1,950 Groups and 440 Pages on Facebook and over 10,000 accounts on Instagram.

QAnon emerged in the US President Donald Trump era and its supporters believe that Trump is waging a hidden battle against a secretive elite known as the “Deep State”.

For militia organizations and those encouraging riots, including some who may identify as Antifa, it removed over 980 groups, 520 Pages, and 160 ads from Facebook.

“We’ve also restricted over 1,400 hashtags related to these groups and organizations on Instagram,” Facebook said in a statement late on Wednesday.

Antifa is an anti-fascist political movement in the US, comprising a diverse array of autonomous groups that aim to achieve their objectives through the use of both non-violent and violent direct action rather than through policy reform.

The US government has been trying to tackle several anti-government extremists, specifically those who support the far-right “boogaloo” movement and left-wing radicals who identify as Antifa.

Facebook said that Pages, Groups, and Instagram accounts associated with these movements and organizations will be removed when they discuss potential violence.

“We will continue studying specific terminology and symbolism used by supporters to identify the language used by these groups and movements indicating violence and take action accordingly,” it said.

In the near future, content from these Pages and Groups will also be ranked lower in News Feed.

“We will prohibit nonprofits we identify as representing or seeking to support these movements, organizations, and groups from using our fundraising tools,” Facebook said.

Twitter in July removed more than 7,000 accounts associated with QAnon, citing concerns about offline harm.

21% increase in account information requests from govts: Twitter

0

Twitter received nearly 21 percent more information requests for account information from the governments and law enforcement agencies worldwide in the July-December 2019 period compared to the previous reporting period.

The micro-blogging platform that reimagined its biannual transparency report site into a comprehensive Twitter Transparency Centre said that the aggregate number of accounts specified in these requests increased by nearly 63 percent.

“The total volume of requests and specified accounts are respectively the largest we’ve seen to date since our transparency reporting began in 2012. We received government information requests from 91 different countries since 2012,” it said in a statement late on Wednesday.

Information requests from the US continue to make up the highest percentage of legal requests for account information.

During this reporting period, 26 percent of all global requests for account information originated within the US.

The second highest volume of requests originates from Japan, comprising 22 percent of global information requests.

“We often receive non-government information requests to disclose account information of anonymous or pseudonymous Twitter accounts (requests to “unmask” the identity of the individual), which we frequently object to.

Twitter objected to 23 US civil requests for account information that sought to unmask the identities of anonymous speakers on first amendment grounds during this reporting period.

“We ended up litigating six of these requests. Twitter prevailed in four cases, lost one, and one is still pending. No information was produced in response to the other 17 requests”.

In this reporting period, Twitter received 27,538 legal demands to remove content specifying 98,595 accounts.

This is the largest number of requests and specified accounts it received since releasing its first Transparency Report in 2012.

“This record number of legal demands originated from 51 different countries. 86 percent of the total global volume of legal demands originated from only three countries: Japan, Russia, and Turkey,” Twitter said.

The new Twitter Transparency Centre offers all disclosed data in one place and data visualizations, making it easier to compare trends over time.

The Twitter archive of state-backed information operations is being used by researchers, journalists, and experts around the world which now spans more than 9 terabytes of media, includes over 83,000 accounts, and over 200 million Tweets and is an industry-first resource.

Twitter said it removed 86,799 unique accounts for promoting terrorism and violent extremism in the reporting period. Nearly 74 percent of the unique accounts were proactively suspended using its internal, proprietary tools.

There were 257,768 unique accounts suspended during this reporting period for violating Twitter policies prohibiting child sexual exploitation.

“Hateful conduct expanded to include a new dehumanization policy on July 9, 2019. There was a 54 percent increase in the number of accounts actioned for violations of our hateful conduct policy during this reporting period,” Twitter informed.

Bayern Munich beat Lyon to reach Champions League final

0

Bayern Munich defeated Olympique Lyonnais 3-0 to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League 2020 final.

Having beaten Barcelona 8-2 in the quarterfinal, Bayern on Wednesday arrived into the semifinal as heavy favorites and did not disappoint, though Lyon made life difficult for them in the opening stages, reports Xinhua news agency.

The French side started the game well, filling the spaces and not allowing Bayern midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Leon Goretzka time and space on the ball.

Lyon even hit the post in the 16th minute, with striker Memphis Depay wasting what might have been the first goal of the game.

Lyon was made to pay for Depay’s profligacy immediately afterward as Serge Gnabry received a long throw from Joshua Kimmich and dribbled past three opponents before rifling an unstoppable shot past Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Bayern doubled their lead shortly afterward when Ivan Perisic drilled a cross into the box, and although Robert Lewandowski’s effort hit Lopes, Gnabry was on hand to tap home the rebound to make it 2-0 after 32 minutes.

Lyon coach Rudi Garcia rang the changes at half-time, but his side was unable to overcome Bayern’s dominance, and Lewandowski made sure of the result in the dying minutes when he headed home Benjamin Pavard’s cross.

Bayern will now face French champions Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s final when the German side will be looking to win their sixth European Cup title.

SC declines to hear PIL against appointment of J’khand acting DGP

0

The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a plea challenging the Jharkhand government’s decision to appoint IPS officer M.V. Rao as the state’s acting Director General of Police.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian said that the PIL, filed by a resident of Jharkhand, cannot be accepted in a service matter.

The plea claimed that the decision violates the apex court’s orders regarding fixed tenure and seniority of state police chiefs.

Senior advocates Fali S. Nariman and Neeraj Kishan Kaul, representing the Jharkhand government, contended that the PIL is proxy litigation and cannot be entertained under the jurisdiction of the Constitution’s Article 32. Nariman contended that the court cannot intervene in a service matter.

Senior advocate R. Venkataramani, appearing for petitioner Prahlad Narayan Singh, did not agree with this argument.

As the Chief Justice noted that the petitioner cannot file a PIL in a matter where he is personally concerned, Venkataramani contended that the petitioner is a resident of Jharkhand and deserves to know how Rao was appointed as acting DGP despite the apex court’s 2006 judgment in the Prakash Singh case (2006) on police reforms.

Holding that it is not keen on entertaining this PIL, the bench said that the petitioner should have come to the top court with a public cause. “A public cause seeking reforms in the police force cannot be a service matter. So, please do not equate yourself with the Prakash Singh case,” it observed.

The bench noted that if it finds that the concerned authorities are not following norms, that is something else, but the point here remains that the petitioner is not anyone in service.

Rao, an IPS officer of 1987 batch, was given the additional charge as DGP on March 16, after DGP Kamal Nayan Choubey was transferred as an officer on special duty (OSD) in the Police Modernisation Division in New Delhi.

The plea contended that Rao stood fourth in seniority of Jharkhand cadre IPS officers, and he was already holding charge as Director General, Fire Services, and Home Guard. The petitioner also noted that Choubey was transferred within 10 months of his appointment.

‘Dent’ in Earth’s magnetic field slowly expanding: Scientists

0

A dent in Earth’s magnetic field over South America and the southern Atlantic Ocean is expanding westward and continuing to weaken in intensity, according to recent observations by NASA scientists.

Currently, the dent has not created any visible impacts on daily life on Earth, but it could pose risk to satellites and spacecraft that pass through it, the US space agency said.

Earth’s magnetic field acts like a protective shield around the planet, repelling and trapping charged particles from the Sun.

But over South America and the southern Atlantic Ocean, an unusually weak spot in the field — called the South Atlantic Anomaly, or SAA — allows these particles to dip closer to the surface than normal.

Particle radiation in this region can knock out onboard computers and interfere with the data collection of satellites that pass through it.

Recent data shows the South Atlantic Anomaly’s valley, or region of minimum field strength, has split into two lobes, creating additional challenges for satellite missions.

NASA scientists have also studied the particle radiation in the region with the Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer, or SAMPEX — the first of NASA’s Small Explorer missions, launched in 1992 and providing observations until 2012.

One study, led by NASA heliophysics Ashley Greeley as part of her doctoral thesis, used two decades of data from SAMPEX to show that the anomaly is slowly but steadily drifting in a northwesterly direction.

“These particles are intimately associated with the magnetic field, which guides their motions,” said Shri Kanekal, a researcher in the Heliospheric Physics Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“Therefore, any knowledge of particles gives you information on the geomagnetic field as well.”

Greeley’s results, published in the journal Space Weather, were also able to provide a clear picture of the type and amount of particle radiation satellites receive when passing through the South Atlantic Anomaly, which emphasized the need for continuous monitoring in the region.

The South Atlantic Anomaly arises from two features of Earth’s core: The tilt of its magnetic axis, and the flow of molten metals within its outer core.

The International Space Station, which is in low-Earth orbit, also passes through the South Atlantic Anomaly.

It is well protected, and astronauts are safe from harm while inside, NASA said.

However, the ISS has other passengers affected by the higher radiation levels: Instruments like the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation mission, or GEDI, collect data from various positions on the outside of the ISS.

The SAA causes “blips” on GEDI’s detectors and resets the instrument’s power boards about once a month, said Bryan Blair, the mission’s deputy principal investigator and instrument scientist, and a lidar instrument scientist at Goddard.

“These events cause no harm to GEDI,” Blair said.

“The detector blips are rare compared to the number of laser shots – about one blip in a million shots – and the reset line event causes a couple of hours of lost data, but it only happens every month or so.”

The South Atlantic Anomaly is also of interest to NASA’s Earth scientists who monitor the changes in magnetic field strength there, both for how such changes affect Earth’s atmosphere and as an indicator of what is happening to Earth’s magnetic fields, deep inside the globe.

Barcelona name Ramon Planes as new technical secretary

0

FC Barcelona on Wednesday announced the appointment of Ramon Planes as club’s new technical secretary.

“FC Barcelona has named Ramon Planes as the figure in charge of the technical secretary,” the club said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Ronald Koeman has been appointed as Barcelona manager on a two-year deal.

The 57-year-old Dutchman will take over from Quique Setien, who was sacked following Barca’s 2-8 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“FC Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have reached an agreement for the Dutchman to take over as the first-team coach until June 30, 2022,” the club said in a statement.

Koeman comes to Barcelona after coaching in the Premier League, LaLiga, the Dutch league, the Portuguese league, and also on the international stage with the Netherlands.

In his six seasons as a Barca player, Koeman made 264 official appearances, scoring 88 goals, many of them from his trademark free kicks on his way to becoming the highest-scoring defender in the club’s history.

IPL 13: Will have a chat with Ashwin about ‘Mankading’, says Ponting

0

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting is not in favor of ‘Mankading’ and has said that he will have a chat with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin when he plays for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

England batsman Buttler was ‘Mankaded’ by Ashwin at a crucial moment in last year’s IPL season during a match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. The manner of the dismissal had created ripples across the cricketing fraternity and beyond, with many former greats of the game lambasting the Indian off-spinner for breaching the ‘spirit of the game’.

“I’ll be having a chat with him (Ashwin) about (Mankad), that’s the first thing I’ll do,” Delhi Capitals head coach Ponting said while speaking on The Grade Cricketer Podcast.

“Obviously, he wasn’t in our squad last year, he’s one of our players that we tried to bring in this year.

“Look, he’s a terrific bowler, and he’s done a great job in the IPL for a long period of time now, but I must admit watching that last season, as soon as it happened and he did that, I actually sat our boys down and said ‘Look, I know he’s done it, there’ll be others around the tournament who’ll think about doing this well but that’s not going to be the way that we play our cricket. We won’t be doing that’.”

Ashwin, who was bought by the Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2020 held last year, had defended his decision to run out Buttler, saying his “conscience was clear”. However, the Delhi Capitals head coach is confident that the veteran Indian off-spinner will take the advice in his stride.

“So, that’s going to be a conversation and that’s going to be a hard conversation I will have to have with him, but I’m pretty sure he’ll take it on the chin,” he added.

The IPL 2020 will kickstart from September 19 in the UAE. The tournament will be played across three venues in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, with the final slated for November 10.

NZ reports six new Covid cases; tally at 1,299

0

New Zealand confirmed six new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, five of them from the community linked to the recent outbreak in Auckland, the health ministry said.

One case is an imported one — a woman in her 50s who arrived in New Zealand from Qatar via Sydney on August 14. She has been in managed isolation at a hotel in Rotorua, according to the ministry.

The other five cases are in the community and they have all been linked to the recent outbreak in Auckland, said a ministry statement.

The six new cases took the country’s total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 1,299, it said.

There are 125 people from the community who have been moved into Auckland quarantine facilities, including 61 people who have tested positive and their household contacts, the statement said.

There are five people receiving hospital-level care, one in Auckland and four in Middlemore. They have been isolated and carefully managed separately from other patients in the hospital, it said.

New Zealand’s largest city Auckland will remain under Covid-19 alert level 3 till August 26 before further lockdown decisions are made, with the rest of the country staying under alert level 2 with relaxed restrictions, Xinhua news agency reported.

Under level 3, businesses are required to implement Covid-19 safety measures, but most people are encouraged to work from home.

10 ways to prevent food poisoning

0

Food poisoning can be harmful particularly food poisoning after eating. How to treat food poisoning can be answered by taking required precautions.

Food poisoning is a common occurrence in several countries and many die on account of it. Both adults and children do face this health issue. Food poisoning after eating is of much concern to healthcare providers.

Food poisoning can be very unpleasant as well even for a fit as well as healthy person. In fact, it can sometimes cause serious illness and also death.

Most people are of the view that food poisoning occurs in restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets but it can also occur while eating home food. Stale food should be avoided as well as uncovered food.

How to treat food poisoning?

Wash the hands

Wash the hands thoroughly with soap as well as hot water, and dry them before handling food, as well as after handling raw foods which includes meat, fish, eggs as well as vegetables. Also, touching the bin, going to the toilet, blowing one’s nose, or touching animals, including pets.

Wash worktops

Wash worktops before as well as after preparing food, particularly after they have been touched by raw meat, including poultry, raw eggs, fish as well as vegetables. There is no need to use antibacterial sprays: hot, soapy water is fine.

Wash dishcloths

Wash dishcloths as well as tea towels regularly and let them dry before make use of them again. Dirty, damp cloths happen to be the perfect place for germs to breed.

Use separate chopping boards

Use separate chopping boards for raw food as well as ready-to-eat food. Raw foods can contain harmful bacteria that spreads very easily to anything that they touch, including other foods, worktops, chopping boards as well as knives.

Keep raw meat separate

It is especially important to keep raw meat away from ready-to-eat foods, such as salad, fruit as well as bread. This is so as these foods will not be cooked before one eats them. This way any bacteria that gets on to the foods will not be killed.

Store raw meat on the bottom shelf

Always cover raw meat and store it on the bottom shelf of the fridge, where it cannot touch other foods or drip onto them. This way it is possible to control food poisoning after eating.

Cook food thoroughly

Cook food thoroughly and check that it is steaming hot all the way through. Make sure poultry, pork, burgers, sausages and kebabs are well cooked until steaming hot, with no pink meat inside. Do not wash raw meat including chicken and turkey before cooking, as this risks spreading bacteria around the kitchen.

Freezing raw chicken does reduce levels of Campylobacter but does not eliminate it completely. The safest way to kill all traces of Campylobacter is by cooking the chicken thoroughly.

Keep the fridge below 5C

Keep the fridge temperature below 5C. By keeping food cold, it is possible to stop food poisoning bugs growing.

Cool leftovers quickly

In case of cooked food not being eaten right away, cool it as quickly as possible (within 90 minutes) and then store it in the fridge or freezer. Make use of any leftovers from the fridge within two days.

Respect ‘use by’ dates

Avoid eating food that is past its ‘use by’ date even if it looks and smells okay. ‘Use by’ the dates are based on scientific tests that do show how quickly harmful bugs can develop in the packaged food.

Conclusion

It is important to ensure that healthy and well cooked food is consumed to avoid food poisoning. This answers the question How to treat food poisoning?

Mahesh, who had co-starred with Sushant years ago in the daily soap “Pavitra Rishta”, had taken to social media on August 15 to join the #globalprayers4ssr movement initiated by the late actor’s sister Shweta Singh Kirti.

Sharing a photograph of himself with folded hands on Instagram, the actor had written: “#globalprayers4ssr #bepositive #lettruthwin.

How Patna Police’s action in SSR case was ‘justified’

In a massive relief to the family of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a court-monitored CBI probe in the case while also saying that the action of the Patna Police was justified.

A single-judge bench of the Supreme Court presided by Justice Hrishikesh Kumar held that since the father of the deceased actor is the legal heir of the properties and assets in question, the action of the Patna Police is ‘justified’.

“Registration of FIR is mandated when information on cognizable offense is received by the police. Precedents suggest that at the stage of the investigation, it cannot be said that the concerned police station does not have territorial jurisdiction to investigate the case”.

The bench said in its order, “The allegation relating to criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of money which were to be eventually accounted for in Patna (where the Complainant resides), could prima facie indicate the lawful jurisdiction of the Patna police,”

It further said that the Patna police committed no illegality in registering the complaint.

“Looking at the nature of the allegations in the complaint which also relates to misappropriation and breach of trust, the exercise of jurisdiction by the Bihar Police appears to be in order. At the stage of the investigation, they were not required to transfer the FIR to Mumbai police,” the Apex Court held.

The bench also said, “For the same reason, the Bihar government was competent to give consent for entrustment of investigation to the CBI and as such the ongoing investigation by the CBI is held to be lawful”

Senior advocate Vikas Singh appearing for Sushant’s father KK Singh had argued that when misappropriation and criminal breach of trust are alleged in respect to the assets of the deceased actor and the concerned property relatable to the alleged offense, will have to be accounted eventually to the Complainant (as a Class I legal heir of the deceased), the action of the Patna Police is contended to be within the jurisdiction, under Section 179 read with Section 181(4) of the CrPC which speaks of consequences ensuing at another place, as a result of the alleged crime.

However, the said arguments were opposed by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for the Maharashtra government and senior advocate Shyam Diwan who represented Rhea Chakraborty.

The bench has also held that in the event a new case is registered in Mumbai on the same issue, in the fitness of things, it would
be appropriate if the latter case gets investigated by the same agency (CBI), on the strength of this Court’s order.

“Such enabling order will make it possible for the CBI to investigate the new case, avoiding the rigors of Section 6 of the DSPE Act, requiring consent from the State of Maharashtra,” the court said.

Want to improve areas of my one-day game, says Labuschagne

Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne is hopeful that he can cement his place in the team’s limited-overs sides on the upcoming white-ball tour of England.

Labuschagne will join a squad of 21 for the three-match T20I series starting September 4 which will be followed by an ODI series after a long lay-off from international cricket due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It doesn’t matter what the format is, I want to get better,” Labuschagne told reporters on Wednesday as shared in a video by cricket.com.au.

“Definitely some areas in one-day cricket I’m continuing to develop are my bowling, making sure I get a bit more consistent and become a better option for the skipper with the ball in those middle overs.

“I also want to keep working on my batting at the death.”

“It’s been good to have five months to work on (short format) skills – whereas if I was playing county cricket then you (I) might not have the opportunity to work on those specific skills,” added the 26-year-old.

Asked about leadership roles, Labuschagne said he was not thinking about that.

“I love being a leader but I don’t think that means you need a title,” he said.

“It’s just about … enjoying my cricket and making sure that I keep staying consistent scoring runs for Australia – because that’s my job.”

While the T20I series will be played at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on September 4, 6, and 8, the ODIs will be played at the Old Trafford in Manchester on September 11, 13, and 16. The three ODIs will form part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. All the matches will be played behind-closed-doors.
