Bayern showing the way to other big clubs: Jofre Mateu

0

Bayern Munich is currently showing the way to other clubs on how to stay at the top and not let factors such as personnel changes affect the level at which they can compete, according to former Spanish player Jofre Mateu.

Bayern is set to face Olympique Lyonnais in the semi-final of the Champions League after decimating Barcelona 8-2 in the quarter-final. They currently look favorites to win the title and seem to have replaced the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery with relative ease.

“You can’t see any weakness in Bayern Munich right now,” Jofre, who came through the ranks in Barcelona before playing at a number of clubs around Spain, told IANS.

“Lyon have some very fast players like (Karl) Toko Ekambi and Memphis (Depay). But with (David) Alaba and (Alphonso) Davies there, they almost stand no chance. I think it is going to be more on the small details as it was with (Manchester) City. If (Raheem) Sterling had made it 2-2, probably we would be in a different situation.”

Lyon has been the surprise package of the season thus far. They managed to finish seventh in the league but in the Champions League, they defeated Juventus in the Round of 16 before beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 3-1 in the quarter-final. Both Juventus and City were expected to beat Lyon with relative ease.

“I think Lyon is approaching the matches very cleverly in terms of attacking movement. They are very careful of course because they have some weaknesses in defense. They are accommodating a lot of people in the back and then advancing but I don’t see that working against Bayern because they cross a lot,” said Jofre.

“If you put your team very deep then Bayern has a lot of players with good crossing abilities and also players with good ability to attack the crosses. For me, Bayern is the clear favorite but it is a knockout match, so you never know what can happen. One action can change everything.”

Bayern stands in stark contrast to Jofre’s former club. Like the German champions, Barcelona has had to deal with aging club legends departing in the recent past but this has only been followed by erratic transfers and financial mismanagement. This coupled with the degradation in the club’s famous youth system has made Barca a shadow of what they were for much of the previous decade.

“(Bayern) are showing the way,” said Jofre while explaining that the Bavarian giants seem to be more decisive with players that they need in their squad which has helped them go through the transitional phase with relative ease.

“As a player, you have your rights, at the same time your debts too. In the big clubs, there are a lot of players who are all competitors. They are good players but in any company, you have a vision. That if you are not able to get a certain level in let’s to say five years, we need to move. I don’t know why professional football clubs do not take those kinds of decisions. Probably Bayern has started with that,” he said.

The Champions League semifinal match between Bayern Munich and Lyon can be viewed on the Sony Ten 2 and Sony Ten 3 (Hindi).

Adil Rashid still has aspirations to play Test cricket, says Ed Smith

0

England national selector Ed Smith has said that leg-spinner Adil Rashid still has “aspirations” to be a Test-match bowler.

Rashid is a regular in England’s white-ball teams, recently passing 150 wickets in the ODI format, but played the last of his 19 Test matches in the West Indies in January 2019.

“The main thing with Adil is he has made really good strides with his shoulder injury and he has developed really well in recovery,” Smith said as quoted by Sky Sports.

“His form is really good in white-ball cricket and we’ve all seen the skill and the mastery which he is displaying in that form.

“There is a jump up required and he is still working on that physical side but in the long term, he still has aspirations to play for England in all forms,” he added.

Smith further said that moving forward, they will work closely with the spinner and Yorkshire and see how his shoulder is and if he is ready to play four and five-day cricket moving forward.

“Adil is still coming back from a relatively serious shoulder injury and obviously there is a difference between bowling 10 overs and a hundred overs, or whatever a very heavy workload would be in a two or three-game spell in four-day cricket.”

Rashid last featured for England in the three-match ODI series against Ireland and picked up five wickets. He will next be seen in action in the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan beginning August 28.

Over the moon, says Divya after being named for Arjuna Award

0

Indian wrestler Divya Kakran on Wednesday said she is extremely happy and feels honored after the National Sports Awards committee recommended her name for the Arjuna Award.

“I can’t express my feelings. Arjuna Award is every sportsperson’s dream. Right now I am over the moon. My family and I faced a lot of struggle and this award is the result of all our hard work.

“I especially want to dedicate this award to my family, my mother. I come from a poor family. My father used to sell wrestling jockstrap for men which my mother sews at our rented house in Gokulpur village in East Delhi. Everything is coming back to my mind now,” an emotional Divya told IANS.

“I remember when my mother once sold her wedding chain (mangalsutra) for my training. Life was very difficult until I got a job last year. But that is past now. With this award, I want to focus on my Olympic preparation and prove my worth to the world,” she added.

Ever since breaking on the international stage with a bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Wrestling Championships, Divya has maintained her stranglehold on the women’s 68kg category in the country.

She won all her four bouts in the round-robin format to win gold in the Asian Championships in February.

It was a special occasion both for the country and the wrestler. The gold was India’s second in the history of the meet since the introduction of women’s wrestling in 1996. It was also Divya’s first top-class display after a lean patch of around six months.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is holding national camp from September 1 and Divya is willing to join it. “I have waited for it for so long. It will be great to get back to proper training,” she added.

Diabetics with poor control more prone to Covid-19

0

Poorly controlled diabetics are more vulnerable to Covid-19 compared to those who are fit and control their diabetes routinely.

Diabetics should avoid getting into fad diets like intermittent dieting or keto diet- focus on a well-balanced diet of green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), concluded the third edition of the ‘Illness to Wellness’ series themed ‘Diabetes Management During Covid-19’ with an eminent panel of diabetes experts invited to hold dialogue on the illness.

The galaxy of experts highlighted that patients with poorly controlled diabetes with comorbidities are more vulnerable to developing severe symptoms for Covid-19.

India currently stands in second place in the number of diabetes cases across the world after China, according to the International Diabetes Foundation Diabetes Atlas. India is said to have approximately 77 million diabetics.

Highlighting the importance of regulating and monitoring for diabetic patients during Covid-19, Ambrish Mittal, Chairman, and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes Department at Max Healthcare said: “A young, a newly diagnosed or well-controlled fit diabetic is not the same as an old diabetic with poorer control. If you are a well-controlled otherwise fit diabetic, then you really not at too much risk of getting COVID, however, the same protocol as others need to be observed with stringent precautions.

“If a diabetic does turn out to be COVID positive and asymptomatic then you need to undergo quarantine, if you are symptomatic mildly then you need to be in touch with your doctor and may also require testing from time to time but this can still be managed from home with isolation. If you are highly vulnerable with old age and conditions like kidney diseases, diabetes, heart disease, and blood pressure then it is advisable that you get admitted.”

Taking the discussion further, Anoop Misra, Executive Chairman, Fortis CD-DOC, laid focus on regulating and monitoring sugar levels for diabetics during Covid-19. “Stick to your medication and check your sugar level constantly. Get your home monitoring kit and use it to monitor your levels. It is not advisable to go to a lab to get tests done right now.

“Sugar management and control are of utmost importance as this itself will indicate what will be your state if you were to contract COVID, whether it will be mild or severe. This applies to non-diabetics too as many people are gaining weight this time and are inclined to pick-up diabetes,” he said.

Stressing the importance of maintaining a healthy diet that consists of ample supply of proteins, fibers, and micro-nutrients, Misra added, “Do not get into fad diets like intermittent fasting or keto diets. A usual balanced meal with 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables and green leafy veggies should be enough. People need to also take in plenty of nuts and seeds and to get a good amount of fibers and micronutrients nutrients in their diets.”

BCCI willing to host a farewell match for Dhoni, says official

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is willing to host a farewell match for former India captain MS Dhoni, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket.

Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said the board will speak to Dhoni, during the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, and plan accordingly.

“There is no international series right now, maybe after IPL, we will see what can be done because Dhoni has done a lot for the nation and he deserves all the respect. We always wanted to have a farewell match for him but Dhoni is a different player. He announced his retirement when nobody was thinking of it,” the official said.

Asked if they had any word with Dhoni as of yet, the official said, “No, but surely we will speak to him during the IPL and that would be the right place to get his opinion about a match or series. Well, there will be a proper felicitation ceremony for him no matter if he agrees on it or not. That will be our honor to felicitate him.”

Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal, too, agreed on holding a proper farewell match for the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman.

“I would be really happy if the BCCI hosts a match for Dhoni. He is a legendary player and you can’t let him go just like that. His fans would want to see him again in action,” Lal told IANS.

“IPL is happening in the UAE and everybody will be glued to their screens to watch him play. But the board can host a series in India too so that people can see him live in the stadium (obviously after this pandemic gets over),” he added.

Earlier, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had also sought a farewell match for the former Indian captain. Soren had made an appeal to the BCCI, saying that Jharkhand would be the host.

Dhoni led Team India to title victories in the ICC WT20 (2007), ICC World Cup (2011), and ICC Champions Trophy (2013). He made an unforeseen announcement with a simple social media post on the country’s 74th Independence Day.

The former Indian cricket captain did not play competitive cricket after the 2019 World Cup defeat to New Zealand and he put an end to all the speculation over his international future on August 15. However, Dhoni, like quite a few India cricket greats, has bowed out without a farewell match at the international level.

Dhoni, who is currently in Chennai, is all set to continue playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, starting from September 19.

COVID-19: Footballer Chhangte chooses ‘sweet’ way to help shopkeeper

0

India winger Lallianzuala Chhangte has chosen a unique way to help those in crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The footballer saved a sweet shop owner in his hometown in Lunglei village in Mizoram by purchasing his ‘gulab jamuns’ in bulk.

“Having sweets is not allowed for use under any circumstance, but this is one way we have thought of helping out the shopkeeper here. If buying sweets can bring back the smile for him and his family then why not,” said Chhangte.

The family that owned the sweet shop was close to Chhangte’s heart as their shop was close to the ground where he used to train during his wee days.

“I still remember the uncle used to try newer sweets and share them with us first. While coming back from school, I used to have lunch at his place almost every day. They are so close to my heart,” he continued.

“After the lockdown was eased off to some extent, I took due permission from the authorities and started going out for training. Then, I found how tough their lives have been. Their pain was constantly haunting me.”

Chhangte took up the initiative of gathering some youngsters who are a part of the reserve teams of various Indian Super League and I-League teams and started training. Soon, he floated the idea of helping the family in one way or the other. The shop was renowned for ‘Gulab Jamun’ and Chhangte utilized to revive their business.

“After training the entire week, we started to schedule competitive matches on the weekends. I shared an idea of keeping a prize. Who doesn’t want to win something after breaking a sweat?”

“Their gulab jamuns have earned from far and wide, and when I shared this proposition of getting the same as the bounty, everyone loved the idea. Thus, the Gulab Jamun Cup saw the light of the day,” Chhangte continued.

“It was a win-win situation for us. We could motivate more people to join us and play which would, in turn, be better for us all. On the other hand, buying sweets for so many people would help the shopkeeper’s family to sustain,” Chhangte said.

“As footballers, we are not allowed to have gulab jamuns at all. We mainly share them with our family and friends. If any player swallows one, we make sure he runs a couple of extra laps that day. It’s the perfect icing on the gulab jamun, isn’t it,” the 23-year-old laughed.

Flushing public toilets can spread Covid-19: Study

0

Chinese researchers have recently reported that flushing public restroom toilets or urinals can spew clouds of particles carrying viruses, including Covid-19.

The study, published in the journal ‘Physics of Fluids’, found that Covid-19 particles from a flushing urinal can rise to two feet in the air in less than six seconds “potentially infecting the unsuspecting urinal user”.

The researchers’ work shows public restrooms can be dangerous places for potentially becoming infected with a virus, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Other studies have shown that both feces and urine-based virus transmission is possible.

“To do this, we used a method of computational fluid dynamics to model the particle movement that occurs with the act of flushing,” said study researcher Xiangdong Liu from Yangzhou University in China.

“The specific models are the volume-of-fluids model and the discrete-phase model,” Liu added.

Flushing a urinal, much like flushing a toilet, involves an interaction between gas and liquid interfaces. The result of the flushing causes a large spread of aerosol particles to be released from the urinal, which the researchers simulated and tracked.

What the simulations revealed is disturbing. The trajectory of the tiny particles ejected by flushing a urinal “manifests an external-spread type, with more than 57 percent of the particles traveling away from the urinal,” said Liu.

But that’s not all. When men use urinals within a public restroom, these tiny particles can reach their thigh within 5.5 seconds as compared to the toilet flush, which takes 35 seconds to reach slightly higher, the researchers wrote.

“Particles from urinals, however, show a more violent climbing tendency. The climbing speed is much faster than toilet flushing,” Liu said.

Urinals are used more frequently within densely populated areas and the researchers point out that particles will travel faster and farther, which poses a serious public health challenge. This work underscores how important it is to wear a mask within public places, especially restrooms.

“From our work, it can be inferred that urinal flushing promotes the spread of bacteria and viruses,” Liu added.

“Wearing a mask should be mandatory within public restrooms during the pandemic and anti-diffusion improvements are urgently needed to prevent the spread of Covid-19,” the study author noted.

B’luru IISc student commits suicide fearing Covid infection

0

A 24-year-old student in the city-based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) committed suicide fearing that he may have contracted coronavirus after talking to a friend who exhibited some symptoms, an official said on Wednesday.

“Sandeep, a BTech student from IISc has committed suicide fearing coronavirus infection,” confirmed a police official to IANS.

Police booked a case of unnatural death under the CrPc and were waiting for the student’s parents to arrive.

Sandeep met a friend who exhibited some COVID symptoms and later isolated himself but tested negative for the virus.

Following this incident, he sent a mail to his friends conveying his fear that he may have contracted the coronavirus and that he wanted to commit suicide.

“Sandeep was already known to have depression issues,” said the official. Though he mailed this message, his threat was not taken seriously because he had a history of depression.

Later on Tuesday, Sandeep was found hanging in his hostel room.

The deceased student had joined the IISc in 2019 in the Department of Computational and Data Sciences and hails from Chhattisgarh.

Bihar did everything as per law in Sushant case: Nitish

0

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision for a CBI probe in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that everything was done as per the law in Bihar. He also denied any kind of politics in the matter.

After the apex court ordered an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case, the Chief Minister on Wednesday said: “After the Supreme Court’s decision, it is now clear that whatever was done in Bihar was constitutional, legitimate and as per the law.”

Expressing happiness over this decision, Nitish said, “This is a victory of justice, not of us. We have followed the Constitution and after this decision, it is believed that the family will now get complete justice.”

Asked if there was any politics in it, he said that it has nothing to do with politics, it has a relation with law and justice only.

Meanwhile, Information and Public Relations Minister of Bihar Neeraj Kumar said that with the decision of the Supreme Court, the public’s trust in the judicial system has been strengthened.

He said that non-cooperation by the Mumbai police with the Bihar police team which went to Mumbai for investigation following the registration of a case by Sushant’s father and quarantining Bihar IPS officer Vinay Tiwari was to obstruct the probe.

He said that on the request of family members, the Chief Minister recommended a CBI inquiry, which has also been approved by the Supreme Court.

‘US Covid deaths 6 times more than other high-income nations’

0

The number of deaths caused by COVID-19 in the United States since July is six times the average rate in other high-income countries, a US news website said.

Among the 83 countries and regions included in the World Bank’s list of “high-income economies,” the US is “one of very few” that have failed to control the virus since the pandemic erupted, according to a report by AXIOS.

Since July 1, 75 percent of all new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 69 per cent of all deaths recorded in the rich countries occurred in the United States, which accounts for 27 per cent of the group’s population, it said.

Basing its report on statistics from the World Health Organization and Johns Hopkins University, AXIOS said other wealthy countries and regions have suffered pandemic peaks or sharp increases in cases and deaths as “terrifying” as America’s, Xinhua news agency reported.

However, the US remains “an exception,” since “it was hit so hard so early, and has never truly recovered,” the report said.

So far, America suffers the second-highest spike in daily new cases in the world, only behind India. Of the 10 countries currently recording the highest daily increases, the United States is the only high-income country, it added.

Sindhu, Ghosal & Rasquinha team up with Mindhouse to talk about mental strength

0

Meditation-based mental wellness start-up Mindhouse has rolled out a campaign titled ‘Winner’s Mindset’ to emphasize the role of mental strength. The campaign features some of India’s leading sports icons talking about the importance of mental strength and its impact on their on-field performance.

The campaign aims to highlight that traits such as physical fitness and training are easily visible and applauded, however, mental strength is often overlooked and is pivotal to a person’s success irrespective of the field of accomplishment.

P.V Sindhu, ace Indian shuttler, said: “I have had my fair share of failure and success in tough situations. I have learned that the importance of mental strength is as high as that of my physical fitness. I attribute a lot of my own wins and improvement to my focus on my mind, and am truly glad to work with Mindhouse in this campaign.”

Commenting on the campaign, Viren Rasquinha, former captain of the Indian men’s hockey team said, “Mental strength and conditioning are very important to incorporate in an athlete’s training, right from the beginning. As physical capabilities are similar at the top, I have seen how the strength of the mind wins you those crucial battles.”

“I am really happy that Mindhouse is bringing this to the forefront, and hope more athletes in India take this aspect seriously.”

In the film, the athletes address the tremendous pressures and challenges that they face on a regular basis, and how it’s their mental strength and resilience that helps them to keep moving forward.

Pooja Khanna, Co-founder, Mindhouse, said, “We believe mental strength is a critical asset that everyone can develop, with correct and regular mind training. We are proud to partner with some of India’s leading sports icons to highlight and bring out the importance of mental strength, and its role in creating winners. We hope this inspires people to make mental fitness a priority.”

‘SC verdict one big step towards justice for Sushant’s family’

Soon after the Supreme Court ordered a court-monitored CBI probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput on Wednesday, his legal team said “it is a big day as his family has moved one big step towards justice.”

Speaking to reporters after the pronouncement of the orders, senior advocate Vikas Singh said, “It’s a very important day for us in the fight for justice for Sushant Singh Rajput as the apex court has ordered a court-monitored CBI probe.”

He further said the top court also held that the probe being carried out by the Mumbai Police was a “very initial” one.

The senior counsel said that now the Central Bureau of Investigation will take all the papers and evidence relating to the case in its possession and would begin the probe rapidly.

This verdict is a big leap for justice to be delivered to the family of the late actor, the senior counsel said.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe into the death of Sushant and asked the Mumbai Police to hand over all evidence collected so far in the case to the CBI.

Justice Hrishikesh Roy said the CBI will be competent to probe not only the Patna FIR but any other FIR in connection with the case.

The top court noted that the Mumbai Police have registered only an accidental death report in connection with Sushant’s death, therefore it has limited investigation powers, whereas the case registered by Bihar Police is a full-fledged FIR which has been already referred to the CBI.

The top court ensured that there was no confusion about CBI being the sole authority to investigate the mystery behind Sushant’s death and no other state police could interfere with it. The apex court order came on a plea by Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty seeking transfer of FIR registered in Patna to Mumbai.

The apex court emphasized that the probe in the case has been ordered by it and the Maharashtra government must comply and assist.

The CBI is also free to register a fresh case, if required, added the top court.

Hackers hit Jack Daniel’s owner, Ritz London

0

The maker behind famous Jack Daniels bourbon whiskey along with Ritz London has become the latest victims of cyberattacks.

The Ravil ransomware group hit the US wine and spirits giant Brown-Forman, maker of Jack Daniel’s.

Although Brown-Forman claims have prevented attackers from encrypting their files, hackers said they have access to “1TB corporate data which they have threatened to leak on the Dark Web”, reports threatpost.com.

According to Jonathan Knudsen, Senior Security Consultant at Synopsys Software Integrity Group, as Brown-Forman reported that they’ve successfully prevented attackers from encrypting files, while few details have been released yet, “it would appear that they have been working to implement a proactive security strategy”.

“Times like these illustrate how valuable that proactivity can truly be,” Knudsen said in a statement on Wednesday.

Jack Daniels or JD is the best-selling premium distilled spirit brand worldwide including in India.

Situated in the Lynchburg town, 110 km southeast of the music city of Nashville, the JD Distillery was established in the 1830s and registered by its owner Jack in 1866, making it the oldest registered distillery in the US.

Every year, about 3 lakh people tour the JD distillery.

Meanwhile, the Ritz Hotel in London has launched an investigation into a data breach.

In a series of messages posted to Twitter, the luxury hotel chain said the company was made aware of a “potential data breach within our food and beverage reservation system.”

“This may have led to the compromise of some of our clients’ personal data”.

According to Knudsen, ransomware is effective and devastating because it allows hackers to sell information back to the people who value it most — the victims.

“Businesses can reduce the risk of a catastrophic breach by taking a proactive, security-first stance and following industry best practices in designing and implementing their technology solutions,” he said.

REVil, also known as Sodium or Sodinokibi, isn’t just operating on the old-school ransomware model of “scramble your files and offer to sell you back the decryption key”.

The hacking group in May got access to secret data belonging to one of the premier media and entertainment law firms in the US representing top-notch celebrities.

REvil initially demanded $21 million ransom from the law firm, Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, after stealing 756 gigabytes of confidential data that include contracts, nondisclosure agreements, phone numbers, and email addresses, and “personal correspondence” of some of the top Hollywood and music stars.

The list had names like Priyanka Chopra, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Naomi Campbell, Robert De Niro, Sofia Vergara, Spike Lee, the Osbournes (Ozzy, Sharon, and Kelly) and several more.

We want to make history, says PSG’s Angel di Maria

0

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel di Maria has said that the French team is looking to make history after reaching the UEFA Champions League final for the first time.

“I am very happy, the team did a great job, a great game, we want to stay in the club’s history. I arrived in Paris to be able to make history. I can now be in the final. It is very important for us and hopefully. We can continue this way,” said the Argentinian after PSG’s 3-0 semi-final win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency.

“We knew that, with all our energy, the desire to reach the final, we could do it and that’s what we did,” added di Maria, who scored one goal and laid on the other two for Marquinhos and Bernat.

Another one who wants to make history in the French team is Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, who is set to leave the club after eight seasons.

“It is a feeling of great joy, because since my arrival at the club in 2012, we were trying to reach the final and there were always some setbacks,” he said.

“We had a weight on us, especially due to eliminations in the last three seasons in the round of 16. Some defeats fell on me as the captain, but I’m here to show my face, I always have been,” he added.

“I didn’t know if the game against Atalanta was my last one at the club, or if it would be this one, but now I am sure that the next one will be the last. But I hope it will be victorious and that we can have a blessed day,” he concluded.

Thiago Silva will lead PSG in next Sunday’s final against the winner of the clash between Bayern Munich and Lyon, which takes place on Wednesday.

Young Indian American represents state at Democratic Convention

0

While governors, senators, and other leaders represented their states at the Democratic Party Convention’s roll call to determine the party’s presidential nominee, a 20-year-old Indian American student stood out representing the Maryland state.

Bianca Shah, the leader of the Joe Biden campaign’s youth outreach to South Asians, declared during the roll call on Tuesday that he will build back the nation better.

“When Joe Biden rebuilds our middle class, he won’t leave anyone behind” and will work to end racial discrimination, she said in the roll call segment broadcast on national television that was recorded in front of a statue of Frederick Douglass, the fighter for the abolition of slavery and himself an escaped slave.

Baltimore City Council President Brandon Scott, who is to be elected mayor in November, gave the roll call with her awarding 119 votes to Biden and one to his rival, Bernie Sanders.

An activist since 15, Shah told IANS that her selection to represent the state shows that “the Biden campaign appreciates the work of young people, young minorities and women like myself and the work I am doing.”

“I was absolutely shocked and absolutely honored as well when I received the call that Biden campaign had chosen me because in most states it is the elected officials who are performing the roll call,” she said.

“Hopefully I can inspire other young people and young Indians that they can become involved and do exactly what I am doing,” she said.

She and her father, Devang Shah, share a distinction: They were both elected in the party’s primary election to be delegated to the national convention supporting Biden, making a daughter-father team.

Bianca Shah said that she had started in politics by working for the Hillary Clinton campaign when she was 15 and served on the Democratic county committee as a student member and worked as an intern for two Maryland Congressmen.

The victory of President Donald Trump in 2016 devastated her and she decided that she had to redouble her political action for the Democratic Party, Shah said.

She joined the Biden campaign and now leads the South Asian Youth for Biden, organizing outreach events around the country targeting the community, she said.

She said that she decided to work for Biden because “I felt that he was the best candidate in terms of what America needed to recover from, all the mess that Trump has created for so many people around this country.”

As a student at the University of Michigan, she said that she has met people on both sides of the political divide and had conversations with them, which “made me realize that we need a presidential candidate who is going to be active in issues such as health care, immigration, foreign affairs like Biden does.”

Devang Shah, a lawyer, is the chair of the Democratic Party’s Maryland state Asian Pacific Islander Leadership Council.

He said that the selection of Kamala Harris as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate energized the Indian American community. “She will be a role model for our children,” he said.

Indian Americans turned out at a very high rate to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and with Harris as the vice-presidential candidate, he said that he expected a bigger turnout.

Indian Americans and South Asians could make a difference in the election’s outcome in the swing states, where the margins of victory are very small, Shah said.

For example, he said that “there was a margin of victory of 10,000 in Michigan. If we had voted at the level of the general population, then we would have had Hillary Clinton as the president, not Trump. And that is what we need to do, we need to get out the vote in 2020.”

CBI for SSR gets SC nod: Pawar grandnephew says ‘Satyameva Jayate’

In a telling reaction, Parth Pawar – the grand-nephew of Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar and son of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar – tweeted: ‘Satyameva Jayate’.

Parth had demanded a CBI probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput a few days ago, kicking off a row within the powerful Pawar clan of Maharashtra.

Sharad Pawar had publicly ticked off Parth terming him as “immature” in a rare outburst.

“His statements are not worth even a nickel. He is immature. We do not give much importance to it,” Pawar Sr. had declared.

The 30-year-old’s brief but potent tweet has set political tongues wagging on its possible ramifications for the NCP and the Pawar family, amid speculation that he has virtually thumbed his nose at the 79-year old patriarch.

Sushant case: JD-U, RJD, LJP welcome SC order for CBI probe

The ruling Janata Dal-United, its alliance partner Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the principal opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court order for a CBI probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

RJD Rajya Sabha MOP and spokesperson Manoj K. Jha told IANS, “The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput death case and we are very happy.”

He said, “Our party and Bihar’s Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav had raised the demand in the one day Assembly session and outside the Assembly for the CBI probe. And now we want the speedy probe to bring the truth out without thinking who all high and mighty are involved in the case.”

LJP chief Chirag Paswan also welcomed the Supreme Court order and said, “I thank the SC for ordering a CBI probe as it respected the feelings of crores of people. The way in which the probe has been handed over to CBI, a long demand has been fulfilled that will make clear what is the truth and the names of the people who tried to divert the case.”

Paswan said, “I hope the family will be much relieved and they will get justice soon.”

JD-U spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad also said that the CBI probe into the death of the late actor will bring out the reality in front of everyone.

“This is a very big victory for justice. The SC accepted that the FIR of the Bihar Police was correct and also ordered the Mumbai Police to follow the order. It is a historic moment, as the two-state was indulged into bitter talks, which was unfortunate. But after the SC decision, the feelings of the crores of people have been respected by the Supreme Court.”

The reactions came soon after the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a CBI probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput and asked Mumbai Police to hand over all evidence collected so far in the case to CBI.

Justice Hrishikesh Roy said the CBI will be competent to probe not only Patna FIR but any other FIR in connection with the case.

The top court noted that the Mumbai Police has registered only an accidental death report in connection with Rajput’s death, therefore it has limited investigation powers, whereas the case registered by Bihar Police is a full-fledged FIR which has been already referred to CBI.
