PM unveils ‘transparent taxation’, Rights’ Charter for taxpayers

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the ‘transparent taxation’ platform, which brings into effect faceless assessment of taxpayers, and the Rights’ Charter for the taxpayers.

With the ‘Transparent Taxation Honouring the Honest’ that is aimed at carrying forward the journey of direct tax reforms, the taxpayers would not be harassed and treated with suspicion here on.

Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister said that India is among few countries giving such rights and dignity to the taxpayers.

He said that the charter has been introduced with defined rights and responsibilities. From here on the Income Tax Department cannot doubt anyone without a basis, he said.

Modi is of the view that the structural reforms will add a new dimension along with the transparent taxation platform. He also noted that reform should be policy-driven and holistic.

Speaking of the recent measures, he said that nearly 3 lakh cases were resolved under the “Vivaad Se Vishwas” scheme.

He also appealed to the citizens and said that those who are capable of paying taxes but not in the tax net should also voluntarily pay taxes.

Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez’s participation in Inter Milan’s Europa League semi-final clash against Shakhtar Donetsk to be played on August 18 is in doubt after the Serie A side confirmed he has a hamstring strain.

Sanchez picked up the injury in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week.

“Alexis Sanchez underwent medical tests this morning in Duisburg after suffering an injury during our match against Bayer Leverkusen,” the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The tests confirmed that he has suffered a strain in his right hamstring. His condition will continue to be reassessed over the next few days,” it added.

The Chilean forward, who only last week completed a permanent move to Inter from Manchester United, has contributed four goals and 11 assists in 31 appearances for Inter this season.

Study reveals why Covid-19 virus impacts patients differently

0

Previously scientists have determined that entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells occurs through a receptor on the cell surface, known as ACE2 but a new study has found that the ACE2 receptor is at very low levels in human lung tissue.

Researchers at McMaster University (MU) and the University of Waterloo in Canada are searching for how the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects the lungs – and they’re challenging what has become an accepted truth about the virus.

“Our finding is somewhat controversial, as it suggests that there must be other ways, other receptors for the virus, that regulate its infection of the lungs,” said study researcher Jeremy Hirota from MU.

“We were surprised that the fundamental characterization of the candidate receptors in human lung tissue had not yet been done in a systematic way with modern technologies,” Hirota added.

“Finding such low levels of ACE2 in lung tissue has important implications for how we think about this virus. ACE2 is not the full story and maybe more relevant in other tissues such as the vascular system,” said study researcher Andrew Doxey from Waterloo.

To explore alternate additional infection pathways and different patient responses to infection, the team is using nasal swabs that were collected for clinical diagnoses of Covid-19, the study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, reported.

These samples offer the opportunity to determine which genes are expressed by patients’ cells and associate this information with the development of the patients’ disease.

The ongoing study will better identify and treat patients who are at risk of developing serious complications and provide predictive capacity for hospitals.

According to the researchers, It is clear that some individuals respond better than others to the same SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“The differential response to the same virus suggests that each individual patient, with their unique characteristics, heavily influences Covid-19 disease severity,” said Hirota.

“We think it is the lung immune system that differs between Covid-19 patients, and by understanding which patients’ lung immune systems are helpful and which are harmful, we may be able to help physicians proactively manage the most at-risk patients,” he noted.

NASA probe completes final practice before asteroid sample collection

0

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has performed its final practice before making its first attempt to grab a sample from asteroid Bennu’s surface in October.

During the practice run of the sampling sequence this week, the spacecraft reached an approximate altitude of 40 meters over sample site Nightingale before executing a back-away burn, NASA said on Wednesday.

“This rehearsal confirmed that the team and all of the spacecraft’s systems are ready to collect a sample in October,” OSIRIS-REx principal investigator Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona, Tucson, said in a statement.

Nightingale, OSIRIS-REx’s primary sample collection site, is located within a crater in Bennu’s northern hemisphere.

The approximately four-hour “Matchpoint” rehearsal took the spacecraft through the first three of the sampling sequence’s four maneuvers: the orbit departure burns, the “Checkpoint” burn, and the Matchpoint burn.

A checkpoint is a point where the spacecraft autonomously checks its position and velocity before adjusting its trajectory down toward the event’s third maneuver.

Matchpoint is the moment when the spacecraft matches Bennu’s rotation in order to fly in tandem with the asteroid surface, directly above the sample site, before touching down on the targeted spot.

Four hours after departing its 1-km safe-home orbit, OSIRIS-REx performed the Checkpoint maneuver at an approximate altitude of 125 meters above Bennu’s surface.

From there, the spacecraft continued to descend for another eight minutes to perform the Matchpoint burn.

After descending on this new trajectory for another three minutes, the spacecraft reached an altitude of approximately 40 meters — the closest the spacecraft has ever been to Bennu — and then performed a back-away burn to complete the rehearsal.

During the rehearsal, the spacecraft successfully deployed its sampling arm, the Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM), from its folded, parked position out to the sample collection configuration, NASA said.

This second rehearsal provided the mission team with practice navigating the spacecraft through the first three maneuvers of the sampling event and with an opportunity to verify that the spacecraft’s imaging, navigation, and ranging systems operated as expected during the first part of the descent sequence.

On October 20, the spacecraft will travel all the way to the asteroid’s surface during its first sample collection attempt, NASA said.

During this event, OSIRIS-REx’s sampling mechanism will touch Bennu’s surface for approximately five seconds, fire a charge of pressurized nitrogen to disturb the surface, and collect a sample before the spacecraft backs away.

The spacecraft is scheduled to return the sample to Earth on September 24, 2023.

New Google portal to help developers build apps on Chrome OS

0

Google has launched a new website to help developers build Android apps for its Linux-based operating system as it saw massive demand for its Chromebooks in the second quarter.

With ChromeOS.dev which is available in English and Spanish for now, the tech giant has also made it easier to build and test Android apps on Chromebooks.

According to the company, it created ChromeOS.dev after witnessing a huge demand for Chromebooks.

Between March and June this year, Chromebook unit sales grew 127 per cent (year-over-year).

The new ChromeOS.dev site is meant to “help developers maximise their capabilities on the platform through technical resources/tutorials, product announcements, code samples and more,” Tech Crunch reported on Wednesday.

Google said that select Chromebooks can use a full version of the Android Emulator and deploy apps directly to Chrome OS.

Google also launched an update to the Linux beta.

With this, Linux on Chrome OS now features an improved terminal that now includes tabs, shortcuts, themes and redesigned terminal settings.

Ramnaresh Sarwan pulls out of CPL 2020 due to personal reasons

0

Jamaica Tallawahs’ assistant coach Ramnaresh Sarwan has pulled out of the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) owing to personal reasons. He will be replaced by former West Indies spinner Ryan Austin in the franchise.

“Sarwan requested leave for personal reasons and that was granted,” Tallawahs CEO Jeff Miller told Trinidad and Tobago Newsday. “It’s a big loss. Sars (Sarwan) brings a lot to the game – his knowledge, his experience, and the way he has dealt with the players over the years, so it is a great loss.”

The 33-match tournament, slated to start from August 18, will be played in Trinidad & Tobago with just two stadiums set to host the entire event.

“We are going to look to move forward. This is a rebuilding year for us, (but) I don’t just want to say rebuilding. We are here to win the tournament. I think we have a great team and the guys are keen and ready to go and let’s see at the end what happens, but we are definitely looking forward to having a great tournament this year,” said Miller.

Sarwan had found himself in the center of a CPL controversy not long ago after Chris Gayle, who wasn’t retained by Jamaica Tallawahs for this season, alleged it was because of Sarwan who created differences between him and the franchise.

Tallawahs will open its 2020 CPL campaign against St Lucia Zouks on August 19.

Vaani Kapoor: Ayushmann is one of the most earnest actors of our generation

Actress Vaani Kapoor looks forward to working with Ayushmann Khurrana in an upcoming film. She says Ayushmann is one of the most earnest actors of this generation.

“Ayushmann is one of the most earnest actors of our generation. The way he molds himself into different characters amazes me. One of my all-time favorite performances by him is ‘Vicky Donor’. For a debut film, I was amazed by his performance. In ‘Andhadhun’ and ‘Article 15’, too, he was brilliant. I am really looking forward to working with him!” Vaani said.

Vaani is set to play Ayushmann’s love interest in Abhishek Kapoor’s untitled upcoming film. Shooting is set to start in October. The film is a love story and casts Ayushmann as an athlete.

During the COVID pandemic, Vaani has managed to sign two important films, the other being “Bell Bottom”, starring Akshay Kumar.

“I feel thrilled to be a part of such amazing projects. Both are very different and, as an actor, this is what we look for — roles that can challenge us and help us diversify our talent and craft,” said Vaani.

2 US reconnaissance planes intercepted over Black Sea

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted two US reconnaissance planes flying over the Black Sea, the Defence Ministry here said.

“On August 12, Russian airspace control systems detected two air targets approaching the Russian state border over the neutral waters of the Black Sea,” Xinhua news agency quoted the Ministry’s Zvezda broadcasting service as saying.

A Su-27 fighter jet of the Southern Military District was scrambled to intercept the targets, it said.

The crew of the fighter jet identified the aerial objects as US Air Force strategic reconnaissance aircraft RC-135 and US Navy patrol aircraft P-8A Poseidon, it added.

After the US planes flew away from the Russian state border, the Su-27 returned to its airfield, Zvezda said.

In the last few weeks, Russian fighter jets have been scrambled regularly to intercept US reconnaissance planes over the Black Sea.

Sao Paulo Governor tests COVID-19 positive

0

Joao Doria, the Governor of Sao Paulo state which is the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“I received my sixth COVID-19 test and this one was unfortunately positive,” Xinhua news agency quoted Doria as saying in a statement on Wednesday.

The Governor added that he “absolutely asymptomatic. I feel fine and will follow the medical protocol at home”.

Sao Paulo has recorded 25,869 deaths from the disease and 655,181 cases, and an intensive care bed occupancy rate of 58.3 percent, according to the state government.

Most of the state, which on February 26 registered the first case of COVID-19 in Latin America, is in a yellow lockdown phase, meaning bars, restaurants, and parks here can open for six hours a day.

Bruno Covas, the mayor of the state capital also called Sao Paulo, was tested positive for the virus last month.

Corona-skeptic President Jair Bolsonaro was also tested positive on July 7 but has recovered since.

His wife, First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, and the country’s Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Marcos Pontes were also infected.

Brazil has the world’s second-largest outbreak of COVID-19, after the US, with 3,164,785 cases and 104,201 deaths.

32 fresh Covid cases in Agra

0

With 32 fresh cases the Covid-19 tally in Agra has gone up to 2,209 as the recovery rate in this Uttar Pradesh district continued to improve and was around 80 percent even as testing has gone up by over 1,000 cases each day.

The number of active cases now is 338, Health department officials said. The total number of samples tested exceeds 70,000.

Till about a month ago, only around 500 samples were being tested daily. Now the number has gone up between 1,500 to 1,800. This has naturally spiked the number of cases. The number of containment zones in Agra is now 153.

While the urban segments have reported 80 percent of the cases, the rural parts of the district have kept it low. A high degree of awareness and better implementation of guidelines relating to social distancing has been helpful in insulating the vast rural hinterland from the infection. The health department has decided to go for random sampling in rural areas to break the chain of infection.

Mathura reported 34, Mainpuri 22, and Firozabad 16 cases in the past 24 hours.

The continued increase in the number of cases in August has brought pressure on the state government’s health infrastructure. The private medical services, nursing homes, have been the target of unfair practices and overcharging.

Uncertainty still looms large on whether schools would be reopened from September 1.

The hotel owners in the Taj City and the district have worked out a plan to reopen from September. A few have already opened doors and are accepting bookings for the coming tourist season. The tourism industry has been demanding the reopening of the Taj Mahal and other monuments as well.

Ayushmann Khurrana hails SC verdict on equal property rights to daughters

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana has hailed the Supreme Court verdict that gives daughters equal rights to inherit property. He said it is a big and necessary step.

“The Supreme Court has held that daughters, like sons, have an equal birthright to inherit ancestral property, and the amendment to the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 will have retrospective effect. (It is) A big step, a necessary step and I welcome this verdict wholeheartedly,” said Ayushmann.

The actor has carved his niche working in socially relevant films like “Shubh Mangal Saavdhan”, “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan”, “Badhai Ho” and “Article 15”.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday held that daughters cannot be deprived of their right to equality, and will have a share in a parental property in accordance with the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005, irrespective of whether the father is alive or not at the time of its enactment.

A bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra and comprising Justices S. Abdul Nazeer and M. R. Shah, said: “The provisions contained in the substituted Section 6 of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 confer the status of coparcener on the daughter born before or after amendment in the same manner as a son with same rights and liabilities.”

Justice Mishra said: “A daughter is for a lifetime. Once a daughter, always a daughter.”

This is how Facebook detects harmful content with AI systems

0

For effective content moderation, Facebook is relying on three aspects of technology to transform its content review process across its family of apps.

The first aspect is called ‘Proactive Detection’ where Artificial intelligence (AI) can detect violations across a wide variety of areas without relying on users to report content to Facebook, often with greater accuracy than reports from users.

“This helps us detect harmful content and prevent it from being seen by hundreds or thousands of people,” the company said in a statement.

‘Automation’ is the second aspect where AI systems have automated decisions for certain areas where content is highly likely to be violating.

“Automation also makes it easier to take action on identical reports, so our teams don’t have to spend time reviewing the same things multiple times. These systems have become even more important during the Covid-19 pandemic with a largely remote content review workforce,” said Jeff King, Director Product Management, Integrity at Facebook.

The third aspect is ‘Prioritisation’.

Instead of simply looking at reported content in chronological order, AI prioritizes the most critical content to be reviewed, whether it was reported to Facebook or detected by its proactive systems.

“This ranking system prioritizes the content that is most harmful to users based on multiple factors such as virality, the severity of harm, and likelihood of violation,” Kind added.

However, Facebook admitted there are still areas where it’s critical for people to review the content.

“For example, discerning if someone is the target of bullying can be extremely nuanced and contextual. In addition, AI relies on a large amount of training data from reviews done by our teams in order to identify meaningful patterns of behavior and find potentially violating content”.

For reviewing violations like spam, Facebook said it is going to use its automated systems first to review more content across all types of violations.

Vidya Balan: I find it easier to follow my heart

Vidya Balan does not like to follow norms. She finds it easier to follow her heart. The actress says doing something that is not natural to you can be a painful process, which she realized a few years ago.

“I find it easier to follow my heart because I’ve tried in the past to follow the norm,” Vidya told IANS in a candid interview.

“I think when you do something that’s not natural to you, or that’s not authentic for you, that process is very painful. I realized that a few years ago, I think almost 10 years ago, and started to read my inner voice and follow that. I found that to be easier. When I think, ‘oh this is the right thing to do’, it never works for me,” she added.

Ask her if she is a rebel, Vidya said: “I don’t see myself as a rebel. I think when people choose to do what they want as opposed to what is expected of them, they are often labeled as rebels. There’s no intention to be a rebel or anything of that sort. I did what I wanted to do, but I know why someone would see me as a rebel.”

After a stint on the small screen with “Hum Paanch”, Vidya entered Bollywood with “Parineeta” in 2005. Since then, Vidya has been defying stereotypes — be it while essaying mother to Amitabh Bachchan in “Paa” or the sultry siren in “The Dirty Picture” or her role of a full-of-life housewife in “Tumhari Sulu” or the flawless mathematician with flaws as a human being in “Shakuntala Devi”.

There have been some misses as well, like “Heyy Babyy”, “Kismat Konnection”, “Ghanchakkar”, “Shaadi Ke Side Effects”, “Bobby Jasoos”, “Hamari Adhuri Kahani” and “Begum Jaan”.

When it comes to work, Vidya likes to own her decisions and doesn’t discuss her work with anyone.

“When I make a choice, it’s a personal decision. I’m only thinking whether this film is something that I (would) like to watch as an audience. More importantly, is this a story I want to tell. If these questions get answered, then I do it. I work really hard and I try to do my best every single time, hoping that people will embrace the film,” Vijay said, on her thought process while signing a project.

“I don’t discuss my films with anyone, not even with my team. Because I have to live with that person. I have to live with that person’s life for a few months. So, if I do the film for wrong reasons, and I have done that also in the past, then it’s torture going through that,” she added.

The actress continued: “I always depend on myself at the time of decision-making. It’s so tough to say what audiences will finally like, so it should be something that I like. Then I can only hope that audiences will also like it.”

Right now, Vidya is enjoying the good response to her recently-released “Shakuntala Devi”, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on July 31. She is also looking forward to diving into her next project, “Sherni”.

“At the moment, the plan is to chill and enjoy this because it’s such an outpouring of love. I feel so grateful and I just want to bask in that. We are hoping to start ‘Sherni’. There is no clarity yet because this Covid-19 situation changes on a day to day basis. Let’s hope that we are able to resume the shoot for ‘Sherni’ soon,” she said.
