Pakistan enhances security of CPEC: Army

The Pakistan Army has said that the security of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has been further enhanced.

On Thursday, Major General Babar Iftikhar, director-general of army’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations, said all formations deployed for the security of CPEC have been further equipped and become more active, reports Xinhua news agency.

“The security is a continuous process. It is a very big project. Its security requirements are increased as it is developed and makes progress. Security will be further enhanced,” Iftikhar said when asked about the security of CPEC during a press conference in Rawalpindi.

He said there will be no compromise on the security of CPEC as the project is linked to Pakistan’s future.

“We are enhancing the security infrastructure as the projects are making progress. We have a better sense of the threats to the project. There is no compromise on its security,” Iftikhar said.

Talking about the fencing of the 2,600-km border with Afghanistan, Iftikhar said fencing will be completed by the end of next year to stop the illegal cross-border movement and to ensure security in both countries. He said that 1,700-km fencing has already been completed.

“There has been a substantial decrease in terrorist activities in Pakistan and illegal cross-border movement due to border fencing,” he added.

The CPEC is a flagship $62 billion projects of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative that aims to connect Asia, Africa, and Europe through a vast network of highways, rail lines, and sea lanes.

The multi-billion-dollar corridor connects the Chinese city of Kashgar with Pakistan’s Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea.

In November 2016, CPEC became partly operational when Chinese cargo was transported overland to Gwadar Port for onward maritime shipment to Africa and West Asia, while some major power projects were commissioned by late 2017.

Tom Lace signs three-year deal with Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire has announced that 22-year-old batsman Tom Lace has signed a three-year contract which will see him at the club until 2023 season.

After passing a medical, Lace will be available for Gloucestershire’s next Bob Willis Trophy match against Glamorgan starting Saturday.

Lace was the tenth highest scorer in Division Two in 2019 having scored 835 runs for Middlesex and Derbyshire at a strike rate of 49.97. Ryan Higgins was the only other player under the age of 25 in the top ten.

“I’m delighted to have signed for Gloucestershire for the next three years. I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running and helping the team to more success,” said Lace.

“Bristol is a brilliant city and Gloucestershire is a county full of hungry and talented young players. I’m hugely grateful to everyone at the club for the opportunity to be a part of that,” he added.

In 2019, he surpassed 50 runs on seven occasions including three centuries, one of which was a 125 against Gloucestershire at Derby. The last time the Bristol County Ground played host to Derbyshire in first-class cricket, Lace scored 83 and 57.

The London native averaged 43.33 for Derbyshire last season, more than anyone in a team that included Wayne Madsen and Billy Godleman.

Richard Dawson, Gloucestershire’s head coach, believes Lace can be a star for Gloucestershire. “He’s a very talented young batsman with a great work ethic and he will be a great addition to the changing room.

“Last season we saw first-hand, when he played for Derbyshire, how good a batsman he is and now we look forward to him scoring runs for Gloucestershire,” Dawson said.

Actor Sonu Sood is being hailed as messiah of migrants lately, due to his efforts in helping them reach home during the pandemic-induced lockdown. However, there was a time when things were not so rosy for him here.

Talking about his days of struggle, Sonu said: “I am an engineer, and after my graduation when I went back to my family, I thought I would start a family business there. But I always wished to come to Mumbai. Initially, I thought that my parents would stop me from going to Mumbai as I am their only son, but my mother asked me to go and achieve my dreams.”

“I still remember when I first came to Mumbai, I had Rs 5,500 which I had saved. I went to Film City, paid Rs 400 to get entry because I was stopped at the gate. I thought that if I roamed around in Film City, a director or a producer would spot me and cast me in their project, which never happened. It is only because of my parents’ blessings that I am here now,” added the actor, who had started his film career with the 1999 Tamil movie “Kallazhagar”.

Sonu opened up on his film journey while shooting for the Azadi special episode of the show “India’s Best Dancer”.

Allergies in children are of much concern to parents and seasonal allergies in kids do crop up which require treatment. Common child allergies do need adequate attention.

In case a person suffers from a food allergy, one’ immune system does react to a particular food when the food does enter one’s body. This food is known as an allergen. Allergies in children are of much concern to parents.

One’s immune system does tend to react by releasing histamine and other substances into one’s body’s tissues. This does lead to the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Even tiny amounts of the food that a person is allergic can cause an allergic reaction. Some reactions can happen immediately, and others do happen several hours later. Seasonal allergies in kids cannot be ignored or taken lightly.

Allergic reactions are common. But most reactions are not severe and deaths are extremely rare.

Immediate-onset food allergies: symptoms

The symptoms of immediate-onset food allergies do usually appear within a few minutes. But sometimes symptoms can indeed appear 1-2 hours after a child has eaten the required food.

Mild to moderate symptoms of immediate-onset food allergies include:

• swollen lips, face or eyes

• skin reactions like redness, hives or eczema

• tingling or itchy mouth

• vomiting, stomach pain or diarrhoea

• nose congestion.

A severe allergic reaction is referred to as anaphylaxis, and it can also happen immediately. Symptoms of anaphylaxis do include:

• breathing difficulties or noisy breathing

• tongue swelling or throat tightness

• a wheeze or persistent cough

• difficulty talking or a hoarse voice

• persistent dizziness or fainting

• paleness and floppiness (in young children)

Anaphylaxis happens to be a life-threatening allergic reaction and does require immediate medical attention.

Delayed-onset food allergies: symptoms

The symptoms of delayed-onset food allergies do appear more than 2-4 hours after a child does come into contact with the food. Sometimes symptoms do appear many hours later.

Symptoms of delayed-onset food allergies do include vomiting, diarrhoea, bloating as well as stomach cramps. Occasionally, there might be mucus or blood in the poo.

Delayed-onset allergies are not usually life threatening.

Common food allergies

The most common food allergies are:

• cow’s milk

• hen’s eggs

• soybeans

• peanuts

• tree nuts like cashews, pistachios, walnuts, pecans or hazelnuts

• sesame

• wheat

• fish

• shellfish

Diagnosing food allergies in children

In case the child has a food allergy, then it is better to consult one’s doctor. The general physician may refer a person to an allergy or immunology specialist for further checks and tests.

Immediate-onset food allergies

Tests for immediate-onset allergies include the following:

• Skin-prick test: The child’s skin gets pricked with a special device that does look a bit like a toothpick and that does contain a drop of a specific allergen. If a hive does comes up where one’s child’s skin has been pricked, the child probably has an allergy.

• Blood tests: The serum specific IgE antibody test makes use of the child’s blood in order to see whether the child is sensitive to specific allergens. If the child’s blood has a high amount of antibodies, and he probably has an allergy. The child can go in for this test if he cannot have skin-prick testing.

• Oral food challenge: Sometimes the child will be given the possible allergen in a safe, supervised setting. Medical and nursing staff will indeed watch to see whether an allergic reaction does happen. This test does carry a risk of anaphylaxis and therefore needs to be conducted only by medical specialists in a setting where anaphylaxis can be safely and quickly treated.

Delayed-onset food allergies

If the child has a delayed-onset food allergy, diagnosis does usually happens via an ‘elimination and re-challenge’ test.

In a bid to protect election integrity, Facebook on Thursday announced dedicated centers that will connect US voters to accurate and easy-to-find information about voting ahead of the 2020 polls.

The social network giant which earlier faced flak for failing to keep foreign players with malicious intentions away from its platform during the 2016 US presidential election said that the “Voting Information Center” will be available on Facebook and Instagram.

“It is also important that we help protect the integrity of our elections,” Naomi Gleit, Facebook’s Vice President of Product and Social Impact, wrote in a blog post.

“With many states making changes to the voting process because of the pandemic, the center is also designed to help people navigate a confusing election process,” Gleit said.

How does the Voting Information Center work?

People can access the Voting Information Center directly from the menu on Facebook and Instagram.

They can use it to check if they’re registered to vote — and if they are not, easily register through a link that takes them directly to their state website or Facebook’s nonpartisan partner.

They can see if their state has expanded vote-by-mail options and request absentee or mail-in ballots from their state if it is available.

Facebook will help people know if a deadline is approaching so they do not miss it.

“In our Voting Information Centers, we link to and source information from state election officials and other nonpartisan civic organizations,” Gleit said.

“And we’ll continue to work closely with state election officials through November to ensure the centers are updated with the latest election information in each state,” Gleit added.

Last month, the social networking giant started adding labels to Facebook posts from federal politicians discussing voting so that people have easy access to the latest official election information.

“Starting today, we are rolling out these labels to apply to posts on voting in the US on Facebook and Instagram,” Gleit said.

Facebook said it has built some of the most advanced systems in the world to combat election interference, and it is always working to improve them.

“The Voting Information Center will be another layer in this line of defense,” Gleit said.

“By providing clear, accurate, and authoritative information to people, we will continue to reduce the ability of malicious networks to take advantage of uncertainty around the pandemic to interfere with the election,” Gleit said.

On August 8, she shared a picture of Sushant’s mother, late Usha Singh, saying that she believes mother and son are together now. In the picture, Ankita is seen holding a photo frame with the image of Sushant’s mother in it.

On June 14, Sushant was found dead in his apartment in Mumbai. His family has lodged an FIR charging his actress girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and her family with abetment to suicide among other charges.

Police said on Thursday it has deputed a team headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police to complete all legal and technical formalities into the disappearance of three persons belonging to Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.

Vijay Kumar, IGP (Kashmir) told reporters that a team headed by a DSP rank officer has been deputed to Rajouri to complete all legal and technical formalities with regard to the disappearance of three persons belonging to Rajouri district.

Families of the three persons have lodged a missing report, which says the three missing persons have been killed in a fake encounter in the Amshipora village of Shopian district.

The family members have said three of their kin had come to Shopian to work as manual laborers and after their mobile phones were found switched off for several days, the anxious family members came to Shopian to find the whereabouts of the three missing persons.

“The Rajouri families filed a missing report and since then we are trying to evaluate the case through all technical evidence.

“We have taken the DNA samples of three terrorists’ killed in the Shopian encounter which will be sent to the central lab to ascertain facts.

“Besides matching the DNA samples it is being investigated whether these three persons who had come from Rajouri were in contact with local militants are not. We will examine all the technical evidence that we have”, the IGP said.

The missing report filed by the families has identified the three missing persons as Abrar Ahmad Khan, 18, Imtiyaz Hussain, 26, and another Abrar Ahmad, 21 belonging to Rajouri district.

Odisha records highest 1-day spike of 1,981 corona cases

Odisha registered the highest single-day spike of 1,981 Covid-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s tally to 52,653, said the health department on Thursday.

The state also recorded nine more Covid-19 deaths, pushing the death toll to 314 in the last 24 hours.

Three patients died in Ganjam, two deaths each was reported from Cuttack and Mayurbhanj while Kandhamal and Sundargarh registered one each.

Out of the fresh positive cases, 1,225 were reported in quarantine centers while 756 were local contacts.

Contact tracing and follow up action are underway, said the department.

Fresh cases have been reported from all 30 districts with Khordha registering the highest 274 cases followed by Ganjam (267), Kandhamal (179) and Sundargarh (145).

The number of active cases in the state rose to 15,808 while 36,478 patients have recovered so far.

LA County reports 1st West Nile virus death in 2020

Los Angeles County has reported its first death of the year caused by West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne infection, officials said.

The patient, described only as an “elderly resident” living in the South Los Angeles area, was hospitalized and died from West Nile virus-associated neuro-invasive disease, Xinhua news agency quoted a statement issued by the county’s health department as saying on Wednesday.

“West Nile virus continues to be a serious health threat to residents in Los Angeles County,” county Health Officer Muntu Davis said in the statement.

“We encourage residents to check for items that can hold water and breed mosquitoes, both inside and outside their homes, and to cover, clean, or clear out those items.”

West Nile virus, a single-stranded RNA virus that causes West Nile fever, is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes.

Humans get the virus through the bite of an infected mosquito, although most mosquitoes do not carry the virus.

There is no specific treatment for the disease and no vaccine to prevent infection, according to the public health department.

It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 infections of the disease countrywide every year.

However, most people’s symptoms would be too mild to be recognized.

A total of five cases have been registered in the Los Angels county so far this year.

It is neighboring Orange County announced on Monday that a child recovered from West Nile virus, becoming the county’s first confirmed human case this year.

NZ reports 14 new COVID-19 cases amid 2nd wave

New Zealand reported 14 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, amid a second wave of the virus resurgence in the country.

A positive case in managed isolation was a woman in her 30s who arrived in New Zealand from the Philippines on August 8, reports Xinhua news agency.

She has been in managed isolation at the Distinction Hotel and tested positive around day 3 of her stay, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a press conference.

The 13 other cases were reported in Auckland and were all linked to the four people from the same family in the city previously reported, Bloomfield said.

The 14 cases have brought the total number of active cases in New Zealand to 36, 17 of which are linked to the recent outbreak, he said.

The country’s total number of confirmed cases reached 1,238.

Auckland resumed COVID-19 Alert Level 3 at noon on Wednesday for three days, with the rest of the country going to Level 2, after 102 days without community transmission in the country.

The government will make decisions and inform people in advance of a lockdown ending on Friday midnight, said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

New Zealand reported new cases this week after 102 days without a new infection.

The Bihar government in its written submission to the Supreme Court on Thursday said that on account of political pressure in Maharashtra, neither an FIR was lodged nor any cooperation was provided to Bihar Police in the case in connection with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The Supreme Court has reserved the order on the plea of main accused Rhea Chakraborty seeking transfer of the case registered in Patna to Mumbai.

On Tuesday, the apex court reserved the order and asked all the parties in the case to file their written submissions.

“It is apparent that it is on account of political pressure in the State of Maharashtra that neither the FIR has been registered by the Mumbai Police nor did they extend any cooperation to Bihar Police in discharging their obligation to conduct investigation expeditiously,” said the Bihar government in its submissions before the top court.

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, representing the Bihar government, had argued on similar lines.

Criticizing the quarantine of senior Bihar police officer in Maharashtra, the government said, “Whereas on the one hand, the State of Bihar and its officials had acted with all sense of responsibility and regard to authorities of State of Maharashtra, sadly, it has met with a complete absence of reciprocation by similar conduct by the authorities of the State of Maharashtra.”

The written submissions also cited that Rhea in the transfer petition relied upon a tweet to the Union Home Minister requesting for investigation by the CBI. “Even in the Additional Affidavit, Petitioner has stated that she has reiterated for investigation by CBI,” said the Nitish Kumar government.

The state government argued that the attention of the apex court is also invited to the provision of Section 406 of the CrPC, whereunder it has been envisaged to make a prayer for transfer of a case. Whenever there is information regarding the commission of a cognizable offense, u/s 154(1) Cr.P.C. it is mandatory to register an FIR and conduct investigation immediately and expeditiously.

“No doubt or dispute with regard to jurisdiction would permit, in any manner whatsoever, to cause any impediment in the expeditious conduct of the investigation. It is in this background that Section 406 provides for the transfer of the case and not for transfer of the investigation,” said the written submissions.

The state government urged the apex court to reject the transfer petition filed by Rhea. “It deserves to be rejected/disposed of by the orders of this court.

“In the facts and circumstances of the present case, it is humbly submitted that no impediment would deserve to be allowed to come in the way of the CBI to undertake and complete the investigation expeditiously,” said the Bihar government.

The 34-year-old actor was found dead in his Bandra flat on June 14. His father registered an FIR in a Patna police station on July 25 accusing his live-in partner Rhea and a few others of abetment to suicide and misusing Rs 15 crore from Sushant’s bank account. The ED took over the financial probe involved in the case on July 31. The CBI took transfer of investigation from Bihar Police on August 7.

Of the 342 players tested for COVID-19 on the NBA campus since test results were last announced on August 5, zero have returned confirmed positive tests. The 2020 NBA Playoffs are slated to begin on August 17.

In the event that a player on the NBA campus returns a confirmed positive test in the future, he will be isolated until he is cleared for leaving isolation under the rules established by the NBA and the Players Association, said NBA in a statement.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Life Prep Academy announced the signing of Ann Mary Zachariah and Siya Deodhar.

Zachariah, a 6-2 forward and Deodhar, a 5-7 point guard, will join this high school basketball program based in Wichita, Kansas. Both Zachariah and Deodhar have been part of all the three NBA Academy Women’s Program (May 2018, January 2019 and October 2019) organized in India and the Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp 2018 in Delhi NCR.

The two have also been a part of the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program. Zachariah, from Kochi, won the Most Improved Player Award (January 2019) and the Coaches Award (October 2019) at the NBA Academy Women’s Program camps. She was a member of the Indian national team that won the U-18 Women’s Asia Championship (B Division).

In April 2019, Zachariah was invited to participate in the NCAA Next Generation Showcase in Florida. Nagpur-based Deodhar won an award at every NBA Academy Women’s Program camp in India: Most Improved Player Award (May 2018) and Best Teammate Award (January and October 2019).

Scientists identify hundreds of drugs to treat Covid-19

Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have used machine learning (ML) to identify hundreds of new potential drugs that could help treat Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel Coronavirus, or SARS-CoV-2.

“We have developed a drug discovery pipeline that identified several candidates,” said study lead author Anandasankar Ray from the University of California, Riverside in the US.

The drug discovery pipeline is a type of computational strategy linked to artificial intelligence — a computer algorithm that learns to predict activity through trial and error, improving over time.

According to the study, published in the journal Heliyon, a vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus could be months away, though it is not guaranteed.

“As a result, drug candidate pipelines, such as the one we developed, are extremely important to pursue as a first step toward the systematic discovery of new drugs for treating Covid-19,” Ray said.

Existing FDA-approved drugs that target one or more human proteins important for viral entry and replication are currently a high priority for repurposing as new Covid-19 drugs.

“The demand is high for additional drugs or small molecules that can interfere with both entry and replication of SARS-CoV-2 in the body. Our drug discovery pipeline can help,” he added.

For the findings, the research team used small numbers of previously known ligands for 65 human proteins that are known to interact with SARS-CoV-2 proteins. They generated machine learning models for each of the human proteins.

The researchers were thus able to create a database of chemicals whose structures were predicted as interactors of the 65 protein targets. They also evaluated the chemicals for safety.

The team used their machine learning models to screen more than 10 million commercially available small molecules from a database comprised of 200 million chemicals, and identified the best-in-class hits for the 65 human proteins that interact with SARS-CoV-2 proteins.

Taking it a step further, they identified compounds among the hits that are already FDA approved, such as drugs and compounds used in food.

They also used machine learning models to compute toxicity, which helped them reject potentially toxic candidates.

This helped them prioritize the chemicals that were predicted to interact with SARS-CoV-2 targets.

Their method allowed them to not only identify the highest scoring candidates with significant activity against a single human protein target but also find a few chemicals that were predicted to inhibit two or more human protein targets.

Facebook could face up to $500 billion in fines if it is found violating laws in the US in a class-action lawsuit that accused its subsidiary Instagram of collecting biometric data without the consent or knowledge of users, the media reported.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday in state court in Redwood City, California, DailyMail.com reported on Wednesday.

It accuses Instagram of using a photo-tagging tool that uses facial recognition to identify people.

In terms of service, Instagram admits that it has a facial recognition feature that users can turn on.

The face-recognition “templates” it creates may constitute data with special protections “under the laws of your country,” Instagram discloses in its data policy.

“If we introduce face-recognition technology to your Instagram experience, we will let you know first, and you will have control over whether we use this technology for you,” says Instagram.

But the lawsuit alleges that Instagram automatically scans the faces of people who may not even have an Instagram account but appear in posts of other users.

Thus, Instagram harvested biometrics data of people who did not agree to the platform’s terms of service, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit accused the company of collecting, storing, and profiting from 100 million users without their consent.

In a statement to DailyMail.com, a Facebook spokesperson said that the “suit is baseless”, and that Instagram does not use the face recognition services that are offered on Facebook.

This is not the first time Facebook has faced a lawsuit for the use of facial recognition technology.

Last month, the social networking giant agreed to pay $650 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused it of violating data collection rules in the state of Illinois, US.

64% people with disabilities facing severe money woes: Survey

As the pandemic intensifies, nearly 64 percent of people with disabilities say they are facing financial problems, and nearly 60 percent have zero income in these trying times, a new survey has revealed. It also showed that a significant number of PwDs either lost their jobs or are incurring losses in business.

According to a nation-wide survey of over 2,000 PwDs conducted between July 18-27 2020 by EVARA Foundation, Dashamlav YouTube Channel and WeCapable.com, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions have severely affected the daily lives and psychological state of the PwD.

Nearly 75 per are facing emotional challenges ranging from anxiety to depression and suicidal thoughts. Data also reveals that nearly 43.6 percent of the total respondents of the present survey are not sharing their problems or emotional state with anyone.
Employment of PwD has always been a key issue in India. Pandemic and lockdown have further aggravated this problem as many PwD either lost their jobs or incurring a loss in business.

The survey also reveals that a large number of job-seeking PwD were shattered because of the cancellation or postponement of the exams/interviews. A significant number of respondents have said that they are not getting basic necessities like food/shelter/medicine during these times.

“More than 75 percent of respondents stated that their emotional state lies between anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Suicidal thoughts are twice more prevalent in males than females. Data analysis provides hints that financial loss faced by the respondents have had an impact on their mental health.

“More than 78 percent of respondents who are experiencing financial loss are also experiencing a range of mental health-related issues. Out of a total 868, 44 percent of respondents have marked anxiety, fear, or sadness. More serious mental health issues have been observed in the remaining 34 percent, out of which, nearly 12.09 percent of respondents feel suicidal,” the survey found.

The comments received along with the questionnaire responses indicate that persons with disabilities in smaller cities and rural areas are facing severe problems in ensuring the most fundamental requirements for sustaining their lives. Accordingly, the present survey report recommends that the State Disability Commissioners should take cognizance and make efforts at the panchayat level to identify PwD who are facing problems related to basic needs like food/shelter/medicines.

The survey report also recommends the state government to take appropriate measures for ensuring psychological counseling of the needy PwD as the study shows a worryingly high number of PwD are facing psychological issues.

TV star Vikas Sethi to launch production house with comedy web series

TV star Vikas Sethi has ventured into production along with his wife Jhanvi. The couple is all set to launch their company with a five-episode web series.

“It’s a five-episode web series that we are going to produce. It’s a comedy show about a phone call that leads to chaos. We have not registered the name yet, but it is tentatively titled ‘Phone Ka Jhol’,” revealed Vikas.

He added that he has already done a location recce but they couldn’t start shooting because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I had gone to Jaisalmer for a recce and as soon as I came back the lockdown was announced. I have to shoot in Rajasthan and it’s not possible right now to travel with a crew. Because we will be traveling from Mumbai, they will straightaway place us in quarantine. So, we are waiting for things to get back to normal,” said Vikas.

Vikas said during the lockdown they have developed six to seven stories, including a comedy, a thriller, and a story about a teen girl’s life.

As for producing TV shows, he said: “I still want to get the experience of producing first and then get into TV. TV needs a huge moolah. You need to invest at least a crore (rupees) to start a show. You have to make the set, then you need to run the show for at least three months. You have to pay for it at first and then later you start getting recovery. If the show doesn’t do well, they will take it off air within six months. Then you land in lots of problems. So I am still learning. That’s definitely the plan, eventually, I want to produce a TV show, but not right now.”

Vikas has made his mark on shows such as “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”, “Kahiin Toh Hoga”, “Kasautii Zindagii Kay” and “Sasural Simar Ka”. He was also seen in the 2001 hit, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”.
