Covid-19 lockdowns may escalate obesity epidemic

0

In an eye-opening study, scientists have warned that locking down society to combat Covid-19 creates psychosocial insecurity that leads to obesity and may escalate the obesity epidemic.

According to the study, published in the journal Nature Reviews Endocrinology, rates of obesity may explode because of strategies to limit the spread of Covid-19.

“We are concerned that policymakers do not fully understand how strategies such as lockdowns and business closures could fuel the rise of obesity — a chronic disease with severe health implications, but with few reliable treatment options,” said study researcher Christoffer Clemmensen from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

In a study, the research team outlined how Covid-19 containment strategies could increase rates of obesity.

Firstly, it is well documented that people with limited economic resources are more likely to eat highly-processed and energy-rich food.

These foods have been shown to stimulate people’s appetites so that they end up eating more calories than they need.

“It is likely that more people will turn to these forms of food, as more people lose their jobs and experience economic hardship,” said study co-author Michael Bang Petersen, from the Aarhus University.

Secondly, physical distancing increases anxiety by limiting our ability to socially interact.

Feelings of loneliness and isolation, combined with confinement within a home setting, can impact our food behavior and lead us to overeat.

This effect is compounded by lower levels of physical activity, as people are urged to work from home and venture out as little as possible.

The research team stressed that they still do not exactly understand how a person’s mental health and economic status end up increasing a person’s risk of developing obesity.

“We know that there are links between obesity and a person’s class and mental health, but we don’t exactly understand how they make an impact,” the study authors wrote.

More research is needed to uncover the cause and effect, but the team said that the scientific expectations are clear — physical distancing and rising rates of unemployment should lead us to expect increased rates of obesity.

“With this in mind, counter-strategies should be considered to ensure that the public remains healthy, happy and active — and also safe from the coronavirus,” the authors wrote.

Also, a study published last month in the European Journal of Endocrinology, revealed that the risk of greater Covid-19 severity and death is higher in people with any obese body mass index (BMI).

Canadian govt urged to address critical drug shortage

0

In an open letter to the Canadian government, the country’s doctors and pharmacists have called for addressing shortages for critical drugs amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Canada’s Critical Drugs Coalition said in the letter on Thursday that the country’s drug shortage has been greatly exacerbated due to the pandemic, reports Xinhua news agency.

“We simply cannot afford to jeopardize the lives and wellbeing of our patients due to an inadequate supply of critical drugs,” the letter said.

Now there are shortages of essential and critical care medications such as propofol, ketamine, succinylcholine, fentanyl, midazolam, and more.

These drugs are essential in the treatment of coronavirus patients under critical conditions.

The letter said that healthcare professionals have also seen shortages in antibiotic drugs, including Penicillin G.

It also pointed out that 24 out of 32 drugs on Health Canada’s Tier 3 shortage list are essential for treating COVID-19.

“As frontline pharmacists and physicians, we have seen and heard of serious shortages of essential, critical medications. These drugs are often used simultaneously in ORs, ERs, and palliative care wards, as well as ICUs,” the letter said.

The coalition called for immediate action by governments at all levels, saying Canada will perpetually face drug shortages unless concrete action is taken.

“Many of the critical care drugs should be part of the National Strategic Emergency Stockpile. However, it is clear that Canada simply did not have enough stockpiles to meet the demand during the COVID-19 pandemic and that there has been under allocation and underspending for the emergency stockpile,” said the letter.

The coalition also called for greater transparency and communication from governments to the health sector and the public on the supply of critical medicines to ensure drug supply issues are addressed before they pose any serious risks to sick patients.

“We encourage our government to give this urgent issue attention and efforts now so that Canadians can have the confidence that their healthcare system will be there when they most need it.”

Guterres welcomes Israel-UAE peace deal

0

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the US-brokered historic peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), under which Israel will suspend its plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

Thursday’s agreement is something the Secretary-General has consistently called for, Stephane Dujarric, UN chief’s spokesman, in a statement.

“The Secretary-General welcomes this agreement, hoping it will create an opportunity for Israeli and Palestinian leaders to re-engage in meaningful negotiations that will realize a two-state solution in line with relevant UN resolutions, international law, and bilateral agreements,” Xinhua news agency quoted Dujarric as saying.

Annexation would effectively close the door for a renewal of negotiations and destroy the prospect of a viable Palestinian state and the two-state solution, it noted.

Peace in the Middle East is more important than ever as the region confronts the grave threats of COVID-19 and radicalization.

The Secretary-General will continue to work with all sides to open further possibilities for dialogue, peace, and stability said the statement.

The agreement on Thursday took place via a phone call between Trump, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE.

As part of the agreement, Israel will suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in Trump’s vision of peace and focus its efforts now on expanding its ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world.

The UAE and Israel will also immediately expand and accelerate cooperation regarding the treatment of and the development of a vaccine for coronavirus.

According to reports, this is the first peace treaty between Israel and an Arab country in 25 years.

EU concludes talks on potential COVID-19 vaccine supply from J&J

0

The European Commission has announced that it concluded exploratory talks with Johnson & Johnson to purchase a potential vaccine against COVID-19.

Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said in a statement on Thursday that the talks are intended to result in an Advance Purchase Agreement, which could enable all European Union (EU) member states to purchase the vaccine, as well as to donate to lower and middle-income countries or re-direct to countries in the European Economic Area (EEA), reports Xinhua news agency.

The statement said that the contractual framework would facilitate an initial purchase of 200 million doses on behalf of all EU member states, and could further purchase an additional 200 million vaccine doses.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said “our citizens’ lives and our economy” need a safe and effective vaccine.

She said the talks with the American pharmaceutical corporation have brought the union closer to this target.

In July, the EU announced it had concluded exploratory talks with French pharmaceutical company Sanofi aiming for a deal that could secure 300 million doses of the company’s COVID-19 vaccine for Europeans once it is developed and proven to be safe and effective against the coronavirus.

Europe has so far registered a total of 3,147,645 coronavirus cases, with 208,549 deaths, according to figures by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

England and Australia will play three T20Is and as many ODIs beginning September 4, confirmed England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia on Friday.

While the T20I series will be played at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on September 4, 6, and 8, the ODIs will be played at the Old Trafford in Manchester on September 11, 13, and 16. The three ODIs will form part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. All the matches will be played behind-closed-doors.

The Australian squad will arrive in the UK on August 24, traveling to Derbyshire’s The Ancora County Ground before transferring to The Ageas Bowl after England’s third Test match against Pakistan on August 27, said the ECB.

Australia will then play a 50-over intra-squad practice game and three T20 practice matches before the start of the T20I series.

ECB Chief Executive Officer, Tom Harrison, said: “We owe a significant debt of gratitude to the players, staff, and administrators of Cricket Australia for their efforts in getting this tour underway.”

“Their co-operation to ensure these matches are staged is crucial to cricket in this country. It will also provide much-needed financial aid at all levels of cricket in England and Wales as we work through the challenges in front of us.

“The rivalry between England and Australia is the pinnacle of sporting competition. The T20I series and ODI Series will be thrilling contests and a perfect way to culminate the men’s international season in this extraordinary summer.

Australia head coach Justin Langer said: “It’s vital for cricket that we do everything we can to keep the game going in these tough times.

“I am delighted with how the players have returned to their states from the break back in March. The whole squad has come back fitter and stronger, which is a great testament to each of them.

“We have a massive assignment ahead with World Cups, Test series against India and South Africa and the Ashes next year. We can’t wait to get back into it again,” he added.

Michael Jordan’s rare sneakers fetch $615,000 at auction

0

NBA legend Michael Jordan’s game-worn sneakers have fetched $615,000 at an online auction.

In partnership with Stadium Goods, Christie’s hosted the ‘Original Air: Michael Jordan Game-Worn and Player Exclusive Sneaker Rarities’ from July 30-August 13.

The sneakers were a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1 Highs, described as the “rarest of the rare”, and were used by the Chicago Bulls star in an exhibition game in 1985, reports the BBC.

A total of nine pairs of Jordan’s shoes were sold by Christie’s to celebrate his 14-year career with the team, the report further said.

Christie’s said the shoes were the “greatest” collection of the historic Michael Jordan footwear ever offered at one time.

“Put simply, Michael Jordan and his signature line of footwear set the foundation for modern basketball and the worldwide phenomenon of sneaker collecting.”

In June, Jordan and the Nike-owned Jordan Brand had announced that they will be donating $100 million to organizations dedicated to promoting racial equality and social justice.

In a joint statement on social media, Jordan and the Jordan Brand had said that the money will be paid over 10 years with the goal of “ensuring racial equality, social justice, and greater access to education.”

“Black lives matter. This isn’t a controversial statement. Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of black people,” read the statement on Twitter.

This development came following the death of George Floyd, an African-American who died in police custody in the US on May 24, causing a worldwide protest.

Bollywood joins CBI probe demand in Sushant case

Several Bollywood stars, including Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra, have now joined the growing social media campaign demanding a CBI probe into the Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

Varun took to his Instagram Stories and wrote: “#CBIforSSR”, with a folded hands emoji.

Parineeti posted: “All that is needed, is the truth. #JusticeforSSR.”

Actor Siddhant Chaturvedi also asked for “#CBIInquiryforSushant”, and so did actress Mouni Roy.

Actor Gulshan Devaiah tweeted: “No hashtags, no finger-pointing, no conclusions. These demands follow a new video posted by Sushant’s sister Shweta Singh Kirti on Instagram and Twitter on Thursday, demanding CBI investigation into his death.

“We stand together as a nation for CBI Enquiry! Demanding an unbiased investigation is our right and we expect nothing but the truth to come out. #CBIForSSR #Warriors4SSR #justiceforSushanthSinghRajput @PMOIndia @narendramodi @AmitShah,” Shweta had said in the video, which she posted on her verified Instagram account and her unverified Twitter handle.

In another post, she was seen holding a placard that reads: “I am the sister of Sushant Singh Rajput and I request for #CBIforSSR.”

She had captioned the image as: “It’s time we find the truth and get justice. Please help our family and the whole world to know what the truth is and find closure, otherwise, we will never be able to live a peaceful life!!#CBIForSSR Raise your voice and demand #JusticeForSushantSinghRajput #WarriorsForSSR @sushantsinghrajput.”

Following her post, actress Kangana Ranaut also shared a video demanding a CBI probe into the death.

Actresses Ankita Lokhande and Kriti Sanon also lent their support to the family.

Sushant was found dead in his Bandra apartment in Mumbai on June 14. His family has lodged an FIR accusing his girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, and her family with abetment to suicide among other charges.

Vikrant Massey, Kriti Kharbanda’s comedy set for July 2021 release

Actors Vikrant Massey and Kriti Kharbanda will pair up for the first time in a quirky, contemporary social comedy, which will hit the screens on July 9 next year.

The movie titled “14 Phere” is directed by “Chintu Ka Birthday” co-director Devanshu Singh.

“The script hit me hard. The ideology of the film and the thought behind the story is something that has been with me, individually. When I heard the script, it felt like two halves becoming one. I would have been a fool to let go of this film. It is a beautiful story that speaks of things relevant to today’s times. I am looking forward to working with Kriti. iPhone 12 may arrive in October, Apple Watch and iPad in Sept

0

Apple is reportedly planning to hold its iPhone 12 event in the second week of October, with pre-orders to take place later that week and shipments to start the week after that.

In a recent tweet, Jon Prosser, a reliable Apple insider said that the iPhone maker may hold an event on Tuesday (October 13) and would accept pre-orders for new iPhone 12 models from October 16, and will deliver the new devices starting on October 23.

While the iPhone 12 models will ship in October, Prosser claimed the iPhone 12 Pro models will not be available until an unspecified date in November.

In addition, Prosser also said that Apple will release the Watch Series 6 and an unspecified new iPad during the week of September 7.

Earlier, Prosser said there is also the possibility that a later iPhone 12 launch event could allow more people to attend in-person.

The late announcement will give the Cupertino-based tech giant time to reopen more stores in different markets that are closed due to pandemic.

Apple is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series which would include two premium variants.

iPhone 12 Pro will come in 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch sizes and may feature a high refresh-rate 120Hz ProMotion display, as presently seen on iPad Pro.

Epic Games sues Apple, Google after ‘Fortnite’ game removal

0

Soon after Apple and Google removed the popular video game Fortnite from their respective app stores for allegedly violating their in-app payment guidelines, the game maker Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against the tech giants.

Challenging the iPhone maker’s rules as well as Google, Epic Games filed the lawsuit in the US District Court in California, claiming Apple has set “unreasonable restraints” over how it handles in-app payments, reports The Verge.

“Apple has become what it once railed against: the behemoth seeking to control markets, block competition, and stifle innovation. Apple is bigger, more powerful, more entrenched, and more pernicious than the monopolists of yesteryear,” Epic Games said in its lawsuit.

In a similar suit against Google, Epic alleged that “Google was founded as an exciting young company with a unique motto: “Don’t Be Evil” … Twenty-two years later, Google has relegated its motto to nearly an afterthought, and is using its size to do evil upon competitors, innovators, customers, and users in a slew of markets it has grown to monopolize.”

Epic further claimed that Google forced phone manufacturer OnePlus to break off a deal that would have seen a special Fortnite launcher preinstalled on OnePlus phones and also asked other phone makers like LG to abandon any plans to do the same.

Apple and Google removed Fortnite from their app stores because Epic Games allegedly added a direct payment option in both the iOS and Android versions of Fortnite, “bypassing the need to pay Apple and Google a 30 percent cut on all in-app purchases”.

Launched in 2017, Fortnite features a battle royale format where 100 players compete to survive as the last player standing on a remote island. The popular game has amassed a huge following of 350 million players and is available on multiple platforms.

UP girl will walk again, thanks to actor Sonu Sood

For almost six months, Pragya (22) was bed-ridden after her of both knees were damaged in an accident.

But Thursday was a new day for Pragya as she took a few steps with the help of a walker following surgery. Her family has not stopped showering blessings on actor Sonu Sood who made it possible.

The girl’s father Vijay Mishra, a priest in Padri Bazar area of Gorakhpur, said he had only blessings for the actor who has given a new lease of life to his daughter.

“Pragya was seriously injured in a road accident in February and both of her knees were damaged. The local doctors said that surgery was the only option and would cost around Rs 1.5 lakh. We could not afford the treatment and most of the relatives shied away from extending any help,” he recalled.

Pragya, a law student, made futile efforts to contact some leaders.

In the first week of August, she tweeted to actor Sonu Sood for help, and he replied after talking to a surgeon and called her to Delhi.

Her knee replacement surgery was successfully done in Ghaziabad on Wednesday.

Pragya’s father said that the surgery has been successful and she will be discharged in two to three days.

He said, “All the arrangements, including the train ticket, were made by Sonu Sood. When we reached Delhi, Sonu Sood’s team met us at the railway station and took us to the hospital straight away from there.”

“Sonu Sood is like God to us. Such angels are difficult to find these days. I have nothing to offer, but I give him countless blessings and good wishes for more happiness and a bright future,” said Mishra.

Meanwhile, Pragya said, “For me, Sonu Sood is God. I have decided that when I start earning, I will help the children who are deprived of education.”

Sonu Sood has been helping thousands of stranded migrant workers to reach home by arranging buses, special trains, and even chartered flights for them during the lockdown.

South Western Railway’s e-file movement triples in pandemic

0

South Western Railway (SWR) zone’s digital file movement has tripled in the past four months amid the COVID pandemic and multiple iterations of the lockdown, an official said on Friday.

“The number of digital files of SWR on National Informatics Centre (NIC) e-office platform, implemented by RailTel, has increased more than three times during the past four months, April-July, 2020,” said an official.

According to the railway zone, the rise in digital platform usage can be attributed to the lockdown and the efforts aimed at minimizing human and physical contact at the workplace, replacing manual filing systems.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, SWR’s e-files created by users standing at 3,623 rose to 14,069, a threefold rise. During this time, 803 new e-office users were registered.

“With the usage of digital filing increasing rapidly, SWR is on the fast track of adapting paperless office culture which will not only save operational cost but also reduces the carbon footprint,” said the official.

Incidentally, with the availability of the e-office facility, the majority of the railway zone’s file work is now able to function smoothly without a physical presence in the offices.

The zone considers such convenience as a boon in these times of crisis and pandemic.

“RailTel has also provided Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections to railway officials for enabling them to process the file works remotely. Quick disposal of files and systematic, timely monitoring of pending files are some of the other immediate advantages of NIC e-office,” the official said.

Meanwhile, to familiarise railway employees with the e-office, training has been imparted to them and similar videos have been uploaded on YouTube.

“The officials have been motivated to give up the habit of using a manual file system. RailTel has also provided a helpdesk to assist railway users in case of a difficulty faced while working through the electronic platform,” she said.

The NIC e-office is a cloud-enabled software that is hosted on RailTel datacentres in Secunderabad and Gurgaon.

“The zonal headquarters, Hubballi and Bengaluru division has been using the e-office platform since July 2019 and Hubballi and Mysuru from January 2020,” the official added.

Ajay Kumar Singh, the SWR zone General Manager said the e-office has facilitated quick disposal of files during a time when no contact is the norm amid the pandemic.

He said the railway zone is moving into a work culture through e-office where there will be transparency and paperless working.

RailTel, a mini Ratna public sector unit under the Ministry of Railways is implementing the NIC e-office suites for the Indian Railways in a phased manner.

Across Indian Railways, currently, there are one lakh plus e-office users in 106 units of the railways, who have generated 17.6 lakh e-receipts and 5.7 lakh e-files.

The SWR was created combining the reorganized Hubli division from South Central Railway (SCR) with Bengaluru and Mysuru divisions of Southern Railway.

In operation since April 1, 2003, SWR is headquartered in Hubli.

India now past 24L Covid cases, recovery above 71%

0

India’s Covid-19 tally crossed the 24-lakh mark on Friday with 64,553 new cases in 24 hours, while the toll climbed to 48,040 with 1,007 more fatalities, said the Health Ministry.

Out of the total 2,461,190 cases, recoveries have surged to 1,751,555 with a record 55,573 more people recuperating in the past 24 hours, taking the recovery rate to nearly 71.17 percent.

The actual caseload of the country is the active cases, which currently stands at 6,61,595.

Notably, the case fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die from the disease among individuals diagnosed, has dropped to 1.96 percent, the ministry said.

The country had touched the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and added more than four lakh cases in seven days. The silver lining, however, is that the gap between recoveries and active cases is growing every day. Currently, recoveries are over 10 lakh more than the active cases.

As many as 8,48,728 samples were tested on Thursday, taking the total to 2,76,94,416 samples being tested to date, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total of 5,60,126 cases and 19,063 deaths; followed by Tamil Nadu with 3,20,355 cases and 5,397 deaths. Then comes Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.

On Thursday, the union government stated that it has distributed more than 3.04 crore N95 masks, more than 1.28 crore PPE kits to states, union territories, and central institutions free of cost in the last five months. Over 22,000 ‘Make in India’ ventilators have also been delivered.

The Centre has been strengthening the health infrastructure to fight the pandemic and effectively manage it. Along with augmenting Covid-19 facilities, the government has been providing medical supplies free of cost to the state and union territories to supplement their efforts.

India continues to be the third worst-hit after Brazil with 3,164,785 infections and 104,201 deaths, and the US with 5,248,172 cases and 167,092 fatalities.

Instagram fixes bug that didn’t let users remove photos, DMs

0

A bug in Facebook-owned Instagram stopped the photo-sharing app from removing photos and private direct messages from its servers even when the users had deleted those, the media reported.

Independent security researcher Saugat Pokharel found that when he downloaded his data from Instagram, his downloaded data contained photos and private messages with other users that he had previously deleted, reports Tech Crunch.

On Instagram, it takes usually about 90 days for deleted data to be fully removed from its systems.

But in Pokharel’s case, the Instagram data he had deleted was still there even after more than a year.

Pokharel reported the issue to Instagram in October last year via its bug bounty program.

The bug was fixed earlier this month.

“We’ve fixed the issue and have seen no evidence of abuse. We thank the researcher for reporting this issue to us,” an Instagram spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report on Thursday.

Pokharel also received $6,000 as a bug bounty payout from Instagram.

It’s a near-identical issue that Twitter fixed last year, in which users could access long-deleted direct messages — including messages sent to and from suspended and deactivated accounts — using its own data download tool.

Last year, micro-blogging site Twitter faced a similar issue when it was accused of retaining messages shared on its platform including deleted messages along with data shared and received from accounts that have been suspended or deactivated.

Security researcher Karan Saini found years-old messages in a file from a data archive obtained through the website from accounts that were no longer on Twitter.

As part of its privacy policies, Twitter says that anyone wanting to leave the service can have their account “deactivated and then deleted” and after a 30-day grace period, the account, along with its data, disappears from the platform.

Agra’s industrial growth takes a hit from Covid

0

Industrial activity in Agra, Aligarh, Firozabad, and Mathura has been affected as a result of the restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has forced people to remain confined to their homes.

The sectors worst-hit are the iron foundries, tourism, leather shoe industry in Agra, glassware, and bangle manufacturing units in Firozabad, the lock industry in Aligarh and silver jewelry, saree dyeing and traditional dressmaking units in Mathura.

The seasonal labor from rural areas has stopped reaching the industrial clusters. “Those who can afford are waiting for happy times, others have enrolled for work under MANGA. In many villages, the migrant workers have taken to farming,” a village development officer said.

Since there is no demand pressure right now, (the four months of the rainy season are considered a lean period in terms of productivity ), the situation is not yet alarming.

Industrialists are hopeful that after the rains, and some respite from Covid-19 by early October, there could be a turnaround.

“Though the government has initiated a whole range of economic reforms and announced so many incentives for startups, the general sentiment is low. It is not so easy to start an enterprise with loans and then to sustain the momentum in present times,” said an entrepreneur struggling with his unit in the industrial estate.

Agra’s hospitality industry that engaged more than a lakh people, directly and indirectly, see no light at the end of the tunnel, though a few hotels have ventured to open their properties.

“Until the Taj Mahal and other monuments reopen, the visitors will not come to Agra. Mobility right now is badly hit, though there are reports that in October, Agra would be connected by air to Bangaluru and other big cities,” said tourist guide Ved Gautam.

The Covid-19 situation continues to remain grim in the Agra region. While the Taj city reported 36 fresh cases, Mathura recorded 52, Firozabad 15 including six members of a hotelier’s family, Etah 20 and Mainpuri 21, in the last 24 hours.

Agra now has 346 active cases in 152 containment zones. The recovery rate, however, remains above 80 percent.

Health department officials said the rapid testing campaign had been initiated in the rural areas. The daily sampling rate is also steadily going up.

The continued wet spell has brought some cheer back in rural areas which were alarmed at the scanty rainfall in July. In the last 24 hours, there have been several good spells of showers resulting in water logging in the low lying areas in the city.

Mayor of Venezuelan capital dies of Covid-19

0

Dario Vivas, the Mayor of Venezuela’s capital Caracas, has died after suffering from Covid-19 for more than three weeks.

The senior member of the ruling socialist party died on Thursday.

The 70-year-old announced on July 18 that he had tested positive for the virus and was undergoing treatment in isolation, reports Xinhua news agency.

“I report that I have tested positive for … COVID-19,” Vivas said on Twitter at the time.

Known to be a strong ally of President Nicolas Maduro, Vivas was appointed head of the Capital District in January.

Vivas is the first top-level government official to die of Covid-19, although several others have tested positive, including Diosdado Cabello, the president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC); Oil Minister Tareck El Aissami; and several governors and mayors of the South American nation.

Google makes it easier to find live TV, sport shows in Search

0

Google has added new features in its Search where users can quickly find live sports and TV shows.

Currently available in the US, people will see live TV options for MLB (Major League Baseball) and NBA games.

Google said it will integrate more leagues in the future.

“You can also find live TV options by searching for the individual team or game.” The company said in a statement on Thursday.

Last year, Google added a new way to find TV shows and movie recommendations in Search.

Starting this week, “we’re enhancing this feature by adding carousels of live content from cable and broadcast providers. These recommendations will show content on live TV so you can keep track of everything that’s available to you,” said Google.

When you search for things like “what to watch” or “good shows to watch” on mobile, you’ll now have visibility into both streamings and live TV shows.

The “On TV now” carousel shows people programming across multiple channels that are currently airing, while “On TV later” shows them recommendations for future programming.

Argentina yet to set date for football restart post COVID-19 hiatus

0

The Argentinian government is yet to decide when domestic football will resume after months of inactivity because of the coronavirus pandemic, Tourism and Sports Minister Matias Lammens has said.

First division clubs were allowed to return to training on August 10, however, officials have remained guarded about plans to restart competitions.

“There is no date yet, it is important to highlight that,” Lammens told a news conference on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency. “What we have established was the return to training in small groups with players keeping their distance.”

Lammens said he would next week meet health minister Gines Gonzalez to discuss the next steps, but stopped short of forecasting a return date for the country’s top leagues.

He added that the government was wary of authorizing football to restart too quickly, citing a series of suspended matches in Brazil because of coronavirus outbreaks within squads.

Argentina has more than 268,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and over 5,000 deaths, according to health ministry figures.

Chinese mainland reports 30 new Covid-19 cases

0

The Chinese mainland has reported 30 new coronavirus cases, health authorities said on Friday.

According to the National Health Commission, the new cases comprise 22 imported and eight locally transmitted, reports Xinhua news agency.

All the locally-transmitted cases were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Of the imported cases, 16 were reported in Shanghai, five in Shaanxi, and one in Sichuan, the commission said.

Two new suspected Covid-19 cases, which were imported from outside the mainland, were reported in Shanghai, and no deaths related to the disease were reported on Thursday, the commission said.
