WhatsApp introduces new limit on animated stickers

0

In a bid to curb irresponsible use of animated stickers, WhatsApp has introduced a new limit on sharing these stickers, according to WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp beta.

The limit is not yet uniform for Android and iOS platforms, although the general rule is 1MB per sticker, WABetaInfo that closely tracks WhatsApp in Beta tweeted on Saturday.

WhatsApp introduced stickers a couple of years ago, but the Facebook-owned instant messaging platform officially announced the rollout of animated stickers barely a month ago.

“Stickers are one of the fastest-growing ways people communicate on WhatsApp, with billions sent every day. We are rolling out new animated sticker packs that are even more fun and expressive,” WhatsApp said in a blog post on July 1 while announcing a slew of features, including animated stickers.

“Note that the possibility to import custom stickers is not available yet officially,” WABetaInfo said in another tweet on Saturday.

Stickers are available in the latest versions of WhatsApp. If you do not see stickers, make sure to update to the latest version of WhatsApp on your phone’s application store.

MP Minister takes matters in own hands, cleans women’s toilet

0

Infuriated over the condition of an office toilet used by women employees in a state government office building here, Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar decided to set an example in public hygiene — or perhaps put officials concerned to shame — and proceeded to clean it.

Tomar had gone to Moti Mahal building on Friday to discuss some issues with the Divisional Commissioner. While returning, some women employees complained to Tomar that the toilet reserved for them in the office building was not cleaned regularly and they were thus inconvenienced.

On hearing the complaint, Tomar inspected the toilets on the premises and found them dirty. He ordered the officials to bring toilet cleaner and brush etc and proceeded to clean these himself.

Tomar also urged the employees to take responsibility for keeping toilets in government offices clean. The officers too should constantly monitor and regularly get the toilets cleaned, he added.

The Minister also asked Revenue Department Joint Commissioner RP Bharti to take special care of public conveniences made available to women staff in government offices and take punitive action against those responsible for dirty toilets on the premises.

It is not the first time that Tomar has come forward to clean up the mess. Earlier, he had cleaned a stormwater drain with a shovel and swept a public park with a broom.

Kohli shares inspirational message with fans on social media

0

India skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday shared a profound message with his fans and followers on Instagram.

Kohli shared a black and white photograph of himself and captioned it: “If you are true to yourself, you won’t fear anything.”

International cricket recently returned after the COVID-19 hiatus with the three-match Test series between England and West Indies, which the Three Lions won 2-1. Pakistan will next take on England in a series involving three Tests and as many T20Is starting August 5. Meanwhile, Ireland is currently locking horns against England in a three-match ODI series.

As for Indian cricketers, their first assignment post-COVID-19 stoppage is set to be the Indian Premier League, which will be held in the UAE starting September 19.

Kohli will once again take charge of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as they will look to end their trophy drought this term.

“They (RCB) will have a big chance to take out an IPL. They have always had good stock on paper but they have never been able to go out and get the job done,” Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg had recently said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.

“Now, with the inclusion of (Aaron) Finch at the top, he will be able to dominate the powerplay overs…get some quick runs and relieve the pressure off AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli in the middle-order.

“Also, their bowling attack looks strong with Dale Steyn and Kane Richardson, and they have a better team balance as compared to the last couple of years. They will have a better strategy going into the tournament,” he added.

NASA Perseverance Mars rover healthy, exits ‘safe mode’

0

Flight controllers for NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission have returned the spacecraft to nominal flight operations, the US space agency has said.

Launched on July 30, Mars 2020 entered a state called “safe mode” soon after it was placed on an interplanetary trajectory because a sensor indicated that part of the spacecraft was slightly colder than expected.

When a spacecraft enters safe mode, all but essential systems are turned off until it receives new commands from mission control.

“With safe mode exit, the team is getting down to the business of interplanetary cruise,” Mars 2020 Deputy Project Manager Matt Wallace of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a statement on Friday.

The rover will land at Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.

The mission — designed to better understand the geology and climate of Mars and seek signs of ancient life on the Red Planet — will use the robotic scientist to collect and store a set of rock and soil samples that could be returned to Earth by future Mars sample return missions.

The primary goal of the mission is to answer one of the key questions of astrobiology: Are there potential signs of past microbial life, or biosignatures on the Red Planet?

The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is part of a larger program that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

Charged with returning astronauts to the Moon by 2024, NASA aims to establish a sustained human presence on and around the Moon by 2028 through the agency’s Artemis program.

Punjab CM extends Bakrid greetings

0

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday extended Bakrid or Eid al-Adha greetings to the Muslims.

“Greetings to all on the auspicious occasion of Eid ul-Adha. May the Almighty bless you and your loved ones,” he said in a tweet.

Low-key Bakrid celebrations in Telangana, Andhra

0

Eid ul-Adha was celebrated in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana and neighboring Andhra Pradesh on Saturday on a low-key note in view of the coronavirus crisis, as Muslims offered prayers in mosques and sacrificed animals.

Namaz-e-Eid was offered in mosques as worshippers maintained social distance and took other precautions as per the COVID-19 protocols.

There were no prayers in Edgars or open grounds that otherwise witness large congregations of Muslims twice a year. Like Eid ul-Fitr, which was celebrated in May, the prayers were not held in Edgars.

However, this time, the congregational prayers were allowed in mosques but subject to certain restrictions. Most of the mosques saw prayers in two spells to ensure social distancing among the worshippers.

Historic Mecca Masjid and Shahi Masjid in Hyderabad saw no congregational prayers as the two mosques remained closed for worshippers as a precautionary measure.

Historic Mir Alam Eidgah and Mecca Masjid, near Charminar, used to witness the biggest gatherings on Eid.

However, prayers were conducted in hundreds of mosques in Hyderabad, its twin city Secunderabad and other towns and villages in both the Telugu states.

In most of the mosques, people who offered a ‘Fajr’ or pre-dawn prayers stayed back for Namaz-e-Eid held half-an-hour to one hour after the sunrise.

Eid ul-Adha or Bakrid is the second major Muslim festival celebrated to commemorate the sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim, who offered to sacrifice his son Ismail on Allah’s command. The Almighty, however, replaced Prophet Ismail with a lamb just as Prophet Ibrahim was about to slit his son’s throat.

Imams, in their sermons on the occasion of Eid prayers, called upon the devout to imbibe Prophet Ibrahim’s spirit of sacrifice and said the Eid’s message is that they should always be ready to surrender to Allah’s will.

Moulana Abdullah Qasmi, who led the prayers and delivered the sermons at Masjid-e-Sufha in Toli Chowki area of Hyderabad, said the success in this world and hereafter lies in surrendering oneself to Allah as a true servant.

There was no traditional handshake and hugs after the prayers as people restricted themselves to ‘salam’ and greeting each other orally.

After the prayers, Muslims offered a sacrifice of ‘halal’ animals to Allah. Sacrificing is obligatory for adult Muslims who are ‘saheb-e-nisab’ or possess wealth equivalent to 87.48-gram gold or 612.35-gram silver.

An individual can sacrifice a sheep or goat or may join six other persons to sacrifice a big animal.

The meat of the sacrificed animal is distributed equally in three parts. The person making the sacrifice keeps one part for his family while the other two parts are distributed among relatives and the poor.

This year, the number of people offering sacrifice at their homes came down in view of COVID-19. Avoiding the risk while buying the animals or hiring services of butchers for slaughter, many either outsourced the job to traders or socio-religious organizations.

Instead of sacrificing goats or sheep, many people preferred taking a ‘hiss’ or share in the cattle with the individuals and groups who organize an ‘ijtemai qurbani’ or collective sacrifice every year. Some groups offered their services even for the slaughter of goats or sheep.

Community leaders say many people entrusted the task of distribution of meat among the poor to the groups arranging collective sacrifice. They wanted to avoid visits to relatives, friends, and others to distribute meat in view of the COVID-19 situation.

Meanwhile, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao conveyed greetings to the Muslims on the occasion of Eid.

“Bakrid symbolizes the spirit of sharing and charity with great reverence and supreme devotion to the Almighty. Wish you all a happy Bakrid and appeal all to celebrate with COVID precautions,” the Governor tweeted.

Rao, in his message, said that it’s a festival of sacrifice and reminds everyone to follow the noble teachings of the Prophet and imbibe the spirit of sacrifice, compassion, and tolerance for fellow beings during these times.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy extended his greetings to the Muslims and said: “May this auspicious day further the spirit of compassion, devotion, and faith amongst all of us.”

President, PM greet nation on Eid al-Adha

0

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday greeted the nation on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, suggesting people to enjoy the festival sharing happiness with the needy by maintaining social distancing and other norms to contain COVID-19 spread.

“Eid Mubarak! Idu’l Zuha symbolizes the spirit of sacrifice and amity which inspires us to work for the well-being of one and all. On this occasion, let us share our happiness with the needy and follow social distancing norms and guidelines to contain COVID-19 spread,” the President tweeted.

He tweeted in Urdu, English, and Hindi.

The Prime Minister expected that the festival would inspire people to create a harmonious and inclusive society.

“Eid Mubarak! Greetings on Eid al-Adha. May this day inspire us to create a just, harmonious, and inclusive society. May the spirit of brotherhood and compassion be furthered,” he said in his tweet.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to Twitter, saying: “Greeting on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. May this day bring peace, harmony, and prosperity in our society”.

Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha or Bakrid by stepping out in their best clothes and meeting their friends and families.

As is the tradition, Muslims around the world sacrifice animals on this day.

Later, a feast is prepared which is divided into three parts. One part is for family, friends, and neighbors, the second part is distributed among the needy, and the last part is kept for immediate family.

COVID-19: Kerala Police HQ shut for 2 days for sanitisation

0

The Kerala Police headquarters here has been closed for Saturday and Sunday after three coronavirus cases were reported on the premises, official sources said.

An official, on the condition of anonymity, told IANS that though the HQ was to remain closed in the normal course on the weekend, it was decided to use the two days to sanitize the complex that has over 650 staff.

“For these two days, only the very bare minimum staff will report for work so that the sanitization can be completed quickly. From Monday onwards, things will be back to normal,” said the official.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday wrote to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, called kidnapping a flourishing industry as such people living under a cloud of fear.

In her letter in Hindi, the in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh said: “I have written to you earlier highlighting the issue of law and order situation in the state. And now crimes in broad daylight are being committed creating fear psychosis among people.”

She further said, according to people, kidnapping has turned into an “industry” in the state and murders have become daily affairs. She also pointed out at increase in rape cases

“And all these things highlight that due to some reason the criminals have no fear of law and administration,” she said.

Priyanka Gandhi also highlighted the murder of trader Ram Avtar Sharma in Sambhal district while he was returning from his shop. Sharma was shot dead by two bike-borne men, who fled with Rs 1lakh on Thursday night. “I request to arrest the criminals involved in the killing of Ram Avtar Sharma and offer justice to the family,” she said. Traders are living in an atmosphere of fear, she added.

In a no holds barred tweet some hours back she said: “It’s ‘jungle raj’ in UP. Both crime and Corona is getting out of hand in the state.

“Dharmendra Choudhary was kidnapped eight days back in Bulandshahr. First, he was kidnapped, and then on Friday, his body was recovered.

“Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Bulandshahr — in every case law and order has failed. How long will this government continue to sleep?”

Zuckerberg flagged competitors moving faster in 2012, show emails

0

Worried about being left behind by mobile apps that made quick progress by cloning other services, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg asked some of the company’s executives what could the social network do to stay ahead of others, new emails from April 2012 have revealed.

The email set off a long discussion among Facebook team members on the benefits of copying others like Pinterest instead of spending a lot of time on building new social use cases themselves.

The emails were released this week as part of a US House Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee probe, The Verge reported on Friday.

Starting the discussion, Zuckerberg recounted his observations following a meeting with the founders of the Chinese social networking app Renren.

“In China, there is this strong culture of cloning things quickly and building lots of different products,” he wrote.

“Overall, seeing all this and the pace that new mobile apps seem to be coming out from other companies makes me think we’re moving very slowly,” he said.

“I wonder what we could do to move a lot faster,” Zuckerberg asked at the end of his email.

Replying to the email, other employees agreed that “copying is faster than innovating.”

However, they also feared that Facebook’s reputation could take a hit if it starts cloning other apps.

In a hearing on Wednesday, Democratic lawmaker Pramila Jayapal took note of the fact that Instagram was acquired days after these emails were sent.

She suggested that Facebook could push smaller competitors into selling by using a threat of cloning their products.

“Has Facebook ever threatened to clone the products of another company while also trying to acquire that company?” she asked.

“Congresswoman, not that I recall,” Zuckerberg said in response.

Facebook has faced allegations of copying features of a number of apps – while Instagram Stories rolled out in 2016 bore resemblance to some Snapchat functions, the Reels feature that Instagram is testing offers TikTok-like functionalities.

PM remembers Tilak on his 100th death anniversary

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the firebrand freedom fighters and the strongest proponent of ‘purna swaraj’, on his 100th death anniversary.

“India bows to Lokmanya Tilak on his 100th Punya Tithi. His intellect, courage, sense of justice, and the idea of Swaraj continue to inspire,” the Prime Minister said in a tweet.

Tilak, born as Keshav Gangadhar Bal Gangadhar Tilak, tirelessly contributed to help the country break free from the British rule. He gave the slogan of ‘Swaraj is my birthright’.

Part of the Lal-Bal-Pal (Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandra Pal) troika, Tilak was called the ‘father of the Indian unrest’ by British colonial rulers.

He was a scholar, a writer, a mathematician, and a philosopher. He was given the title, ‘Lokmanya’, meaning ‘beloved leader’, by his followers. He died on August 1, 1920, in Mumbai.

BJP launches protests in Kerala to demand govt’s resignation

The BJP Kerala unit on Saturday launched protest demonstrations across the state to demand Pinarayi Vijayan government’s resignation in the wake of the unearthing of the gold smuggling racket.

BJP national secretary Bhupender Yadav, who launched the protests online from Delhi, alleged that the CMO was “facilitating” the gold smuggling.

These protests will continue till August 18, with all top state BJP leaders observing one-day fasts at the various places during this period.

On Saturday, lone BJP legislator in Kerala Assembly, O. Rajagopal, began his day-long fast at the state party headquarters here.

Yadav said Vijayan will go down in history as the “most corrupt Chief Minister” in the country.

“Vijayan, your time is now up. You will be forced to tell the truth on how the gold smuggling is taking place, as your own office has direct control over it. Look into those who have been arrested — they include Swapna Suresh, who despite no qualifications was given a job in the IT Department headed by Vijayan. You will have to answer,” the BJP leader said in his speech.

State BJP President K. Surendran, participating in the launch of the protest from his home in Kozhikode, said the situation is grave as allegations have now surfaced that the “smuggling of gold going on with the help of Vijayan’s office has terror links too”.

“… news that is now coming out is that the legal brains of the Communist Party of India-Marxist are working hard to save the accused. It’s also now coming out that the Kerala Police is now trying to get the custody of the accused in order to tutor them,” Surendran claimed.

The gold smuggling came to light when Sarith, a former employee of the UAE Consulate here, was arrested by the Customs on July 5 as he was facilitating the smuggling of 30 kg gold in diplomatic baggage to Thiruvananthapuram from Dubai.

3 young hackers charged with compromising 130 top Twitter users (Ld)

0

The US Department of Justice has charged three young individuals (including one juvenile) with hacking Twitter last month that compromised the accounts of 130 high-profile celebrities, politicians, and businesses like Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Apple and Uber.

The 19-year-old Mason Sheppard (aka “Chaewon”) of the UK was charged in a criminal complaint in the Northern District of California with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and the intentional access of a protected computer.

“Nima Fazeli, aka “Rolex,” 22, of Orlando, Florida, was charged in a criminal complaint in the Northern District of California with aiding and abetting the intentional access of a protected computer,” the Department of Justice said in a statement on Friday.

The third defendant is a juvenile.

“With exceptions that do not apply to this case, juvenile proceedings in federal court are sealed to protect the identity of the juvenile,” said the statement.

Twitter has revealed that the massive hack that spread a cryptocurrency scam by hijacking accounts of high-profile celebrities, politicians, and businesses was a result of a phone spear-phishing attack.

The attackers targeted 130 Twitter accounts, ultimately tweeting from 45, accessing the DM (Direct Messages) inbox of 36, and downloading the Twitter data of seven accounts.

The incident raised concerns around Twitter tools and levels of employee access.

“The hackers allegedly compromised over 100 social media accounts and scammed both the account users and others who sent money based on their fraudulent solicitations,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian C. Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

As alleged in the complaints, the Twitter attack consisted of a combination of technical breaches and social engineering.

“There is a false belief within the criminal hacker community that attacks like the Twitter hack can be perpetrated anonymously and without consequence,” said US Attorney David L. Anderson for the Northern District of California.

The hackers are alleged to have created a scam Bitcoin account, to have hacked into Twitter VIP accounts, to have sent solicitations from the Twitter VIP accounts with a false promise to double any Bitcoin deposits made to the scam account and then to have stolen the Bitcoin that victims deposited into the scam account.

As alleged in the complaints, the scam Bitcoin account received more than 400 transfers worth more than $100,000.

“Today’s announcement proves that cybercriminals can no longer hide behind perceived global anonymity,” said Thomas Edwards, Special Agent in Charge, US Secret Service, San Francisco Field Office.

Twitter said that since the attack, it has significantly limited access to its internal tools and systems to ensure ongoing account security.

As a result, some features — namely, accessing the Your Twitter Data download feature — and processes have been impacted.

Twitter said it will be slower to respond to account support needs, reported tweets, and applications to its developer platform.

4 new real stories depict how Indians connect via Facebook

0

In a bid to help its millions of users in India connect better, Facebook on Saturday launched the next phase of its consumer marketing campaign depicting real such stories in India.

Called ‘More Together’ that was first launched in March this year, the new campaign showcases four, 30-second films featuring young parents, grandparents, two roommates, and a doctor and depicts how they found support through their connections to help each other during these extraordinary times.

“People who were once strangers, connected with one another through Facebook, and together addressed many challenges that have surfaced in recent times. Through this campaign, we are shining a spotlight on the real stories that have inspired us,” said Avinash Pant, Director-Marketing, Facebook India.

The core campaign has been conceptualized and executed by Taproot Dentsu, the creative agency from the house of Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN) India.

“When it came to looking out for each other in the months gone by, we found that Facebook was a vehicle. People were the fuel. This is the simple truth the campaign tries to capture,” said Pallavi Chakravarti, Executive Creative Director, Taproot Dentsu.

Facebook in March launched the ‘More Together’ consumer marketing campaign in India – the first country in the Asia Pacific region where such a campaign was rolled out.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp launched its first global brand campaign in India that narrated real stories about how Indians communicate daily on WhatsApp with their closest relationships.
