BCCI to hand 2-yr ban to players committing age, domicile fraud

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has adopted new measures to counter the menace of age and domicile fraud in cricket in the country.

The additional measures, adopted by the sport’s governing body in India, will be applicable to all cricketers participating in the BCCI age-group tournaments, from season 2020-21 onwards. They are:

1. Voluntary Disclosure Scheme for players who are already registered

Under this scheme, players who voluntarily declare that they have manipulated their date of birth by submitting fake/tampered documents in the past will not be suspended and allowed to participate in the appropriate age group level if they disclose their actual date of birth (DOB).

Players have to submit a signed letter/email along with supporting documents to the BCCI Age Verification Dept. revealing their actual DOB before September 15.

However, if registered players do not disclose the facts and are found to have submitted fake/tampered DOB proof documents by BCCI, then they will be banned for two years, and after completion of a two-year suspension, they will not be allowed to participate in age group tournaments of BCCI, as well as, age-group tournaments organized by the state units.

2. Season 2020-21 onwards, any player submitting fake/tampered birth certificate will be banned for two years from all cricket matches under the aegis of BCCI & state units. After completion of a two-year suspension, such players will not be allowed to participate in age group tournaments of BCCI, as well as, age-group tournaments organized by state units.

3. All cricketers committing domicile fraud, including senior men & women, will be banned for two years. Voluntary Disclosure Scheme does not apply for cricketers who have committed domicile fraud.

4. For the BCCI Under-16 age-group tournament, only players who are between 14-16 years old will be permitted to register.

5. In the Under-19 age group, if a player’s birth is found to be registered more than two years after birth, as mentioned in the birth certificate, then there will be restrictions on the number of years allowed to participate in the BCCI Under-19 tournaments.

The board further said that in order to report age fraud, a dedicated 24X7 helpline (9820556566/9136694499) has been put in place.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said: “We are committed to providing a level-playing field across all age groups. The BCCI has been taking steps to counter age fraud and are now introducing even stricter measures from the upcoming domestic season. Those who do not voluntarily disclose their misdemeanor will be punished heavily and will be banned for two years.”

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said: “BCCI has a zero-tolerance approach towards age fraud in cricket. Not only have we dedicated a 24/7 helpline to counter this menace, but the board also has a system in place that thoroughly examines, and cross-verifies documents submitted by its registered players. The Voluntary Disclosure Scheme will provide those who have committed the fraud a chance to come forward and admit their offense.”

Arun Singh Dhumal, BCCI Treasurer said: “It has been BCCI’s constant endeavor to take stringent measures to eradicate age fraud. We believe these additional methods taken by the BCCI will help in tackling the issue of age and domicile fraud.”

Rahul Dravid, Head Cricket, NCA: “Age fraud is a serious matter and is detrimental to the health of the sport. Many youngsters who are supposed to be playing in a particular age group fail to make it owing to age fraud. With the BCCI taking stern actions to curb this, it is only advisable for the players to come forward and abide by the directives issued by the board.”

SpaceX Crew Dragon returns with 2 NASA astronauts (Ld)

Two NASA astronauts have safely returned to Earth from the International Space Station on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, marking the completion of a historic flight called demonstration (Demo-2) mission.

The Demo-2 test flight for NASA’s Commercial Crew Programme has become the first to deliver astronauts to the space station and return them safely to Earth onboard a commercially built and operated spacecraft.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, carrying Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley, splashed down under parachutes in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida at 2.48 pm EDT on Sunday and was successfully recovered by SpaceX.

“Welcome home, Bob and Doug! Congratulations to the NASA and SpaceX teams for the incredible work to make this test flight possible,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

“It’s a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together to do something once thought impossible. Partners are key to how we go farther than ever before and take the next steps on daring missions to the Moon and Mars.”

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appeared super excited at the completion of the test flight as he congratulated both NASA and SpaceX on the accomplishment that marked the beginning of a new era in human spaceflight.

“When space travel becomes as common as air travel, the future of civilization will be assured,” Musk said in a tweet soon after the splashdown.

Behnken and Hurley’s return was the first splashdown for American astronauts since Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald “Deka Slayton landed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii on July 24, 1975, at the end of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.

NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight launched May 30 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

It was the first time that astronauts were sent into space from the US soil since 2011.

After reaching orbit, Behnken and Hurley named their Crew Dragon spacecraft “Endeavour” as a tribute to the first space shuttle each astronaut had flown aboard.

Nearly 19 hours later, Crew Dragon docked to the forward port of the International Space Station’s Harmony module on May 31.

Behnken and Hurley participated in a number of scientific experiments, spacewalks, and public engagement events during their 62 days aboard the station.

Overall, the astronaut duo spent 64 days in orbit, completed 1,024 orbits around Earth, and traveled 27,147,284 statute miles.

The astronauts contributed more than 100 hours of time to supporting the orbiting laboratory’s investigations.

The Demo-2 test flight is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which has worked with the US aerospace industry to launch astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft.

The goal of the program is safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation to and from the space station.

The completion of Demo-2 and the review of the mission and spacecraft pave the way for NASA to certify SpaceX’s crew transportation system for regular flights carrying astronauts to and from the space station.

SpaceX is readying the hardware for the first rotational mission, called Crew-1, later this year.

This mission would occur after NASA certification, which is expected to take about six weeks.

Daily Covid count in Telangana falls below 1K-mark

0

For the first time in more than a month, the daily count of Covid-19 cases in Telangana came down below 1,000-mark as the state reported 983 new cases on Monday.

With this, the Covid-19 tally in the state rose to 67,660. Eleven fresh fatalities pushed the cumulative death toll to 551.

The state had last reported below 1,000 cases on June 30 when 945 people had tested positive. Since then there has been a spike in new infections.

According to a medical bulletin issued by the health department on Monday, 983 people tested positive during the last 24 hours, ending 8 p.m. on Sunday.

In fact, more people recovered than the new positive cases in a day. Officials said 1,019 people recovered from Covid-19, taking the total number of recoveries to 48,609.

The number of tests, however, has also come down. Only 9,443 tests were conducted against over 20,000 per day during the last few days.

Officials claim that the number is still much higher than the target of 5,600 per day as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) benchmark.

The state has so far conducted 4,87,238 tests. Test results of 1,414 samples were awaited.

According to the director of public health and family welfare, 16 government and 23 private laboratories conducted RT-PCR, CBNAAT, and TRUENAT types of tests while there are 320 centers doing rapid antigen tests.

It was only last month that the state started revealing the number of daily tests. From 3,000-4,000 tests per day, the authorities ramped up the testing to over 20,000 per day. The media bulletin, however, provides no break-up of the types of tests.

The number of daily new cases in Greater Hyderabad slumped to 273. The new infections registered in 32 districts were in double or single digits. Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri districts, bordering Greater Hyderabad, reported 73 and 48 new cases respectively.

On August 1, the state saw the highest-ever spike of 2,083 in daily Covid-19 cases but the number of tests conducted was 21,011. These numbers came down to 1,891 and 19,202 respectively on August 2.

On the fatality rate, the officials said at 0.81 percent it was far below the national average of 2.13 percent. The state also has a high recovery rate of 71.8 percent against 65.44 percent at the national level.

The number of active cases stands at 18,500. This includes 11,911 who were in-home/institutional isolation. More than 84 percent of those who are under home isolation are asymptomatic.

Pak’s Punjab province lifts COVID-19 lockdown

0

Pakistan’s Punjab province, the second worst-hit in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic, has lifted a lockdown amid a continued fall in the number of positive cases, it was reported on Monday.

The lockdown was imposed till August 5 across the province ahead of Eid-ul-Adha in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus, reports The Express Tribune.

But it was lifted on Sunday, a day ahead of the given date.

In a notification, the provincial health department said all business except those which fall in “negative list” will be allowed to operate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday

The new directives came into effect on Monday.

Punjab has reported 24 new cases of the coronavirus and four more fatalities, according to the government’s COVID-19 portal.

This has taken the total cases in the province to 93,197 while the death toll has risen to 2,148.

Pakistan has so far recorded a total of 279,966 cases, with 5,982 deaths.

Afridi used Tendulkar’s bat to score 37-ball ton, reveals Mahmood

0

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood recently jogged the down memory lane and recalled how Shahid Afridi took the world by storm in just his second match on the international arena.

Mahmood revealed the luck factor that saw Afridi being included in the Pakistan squad for the four-team tournament following an injury to their star spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.

“Shahid Afridi had debuted in Nairobi in 1996 after the Sahara Cup, where I made my debut,” Mahmood said on Wisden’s The Greatest Rivalry podcast. “So Mushi (Mushtaq Ahmed) got injured in that series and Shahid Afridi was touring with the Pakistan A team to West Indies and he replaced Mushi in that tournament.

Mahmood was talking about the 1996 KCA Centenary Tournament that saw Sri Lanka, Pakistan, South Africa, and Kenya play all their matches in Nairobi. He recalled Afridi’s blitzkrieg in just his second ODI as he struck a majestic 40-ball 102 against Sri Lanka in the sixth match of the series.

Afridi crossed the 100-run mark off just 37 deliveries and it remained the fastest ODI century till Corey Anderson (36 balls) broke the record in 2014 and AB de Villiers (31 balls) bettered it in 2015. Mahmood revealed Afridi used Sachin Tendulkar’s bat to score that incredible inning.

“In those days, the two Sri Lankan openers, Jayasuriya and wicketkeeper Kaluwitharana, they used to attack upfront. So we thought we need someone who can bat at No.3. Afridi and I – Wasim said you guys go and try to slog (in the nets). I was slogging sensibly and Afridi went against the spinners, murdering everyone in the nets,” Mahmood recalled.

“Next day, we got the game against Sri Lanka and they said he (Afridi) is batting at number three. I think Waqar (Younis) got a bat from Sachin (Tendulkar), he used the great Sachin’s bat and managed to get a hundred and after that, he became a batsman. Mainly he was a bowler who can hit the ball, but in the end, he had a wonderful career,” he added.

What happened to our officer in Mumbai is not right: Bihar CM

0

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed his displeasure over the way Bihar Police IPS officer Vinay Tiwari, who is in Mumbai to probe Sushant Singh’s death case, was treated by the Mumbai Police. Tiwari was forcibly quarantined upon arrival in Mumbai by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials. The Chief Minister said whatever happened with Tiwari in Mumbai is not right.

Talking to media persons in Patna, Kumar said, “What happened to the IPS officer who went to Mumbai to investigate the Sushant case was not right. He was carrying out his duty.”

Kumar further said that the Director-General of Bihar Police will talk to the officials of Maharashtra about the alleged mistreatment of Tiwari.

Kumar, however, did not talk about the CBI probe in the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Rajput was found dead in his apartment in Mumbai on June 14, in what the Maharashtra Police said was a case of suicide.

Neuralink brain chip to allow people to hear sounds impossible to humans

0

Tesla and SpaceX founder, Elon Musk has claimed that his new pet project Neuralink chip will allow users to hear sounds that previously were impossible to human ears.

Musk founded Neuralink in 2016 but has only held one major public presentation. However, more details about Neuralink will be presented at an event on August 28, reports independent.co.uk.

The main aim of the project is to provide a direct connection between a brain and a computer to overcome the power of artificial intelligence (AI), using a “sewing machine-like” device to stitch threads to an implanted brain chip.

Musk recently said that Neuralink’s brain chip technology would allow people to stream music into their brains effortlessly.

Musk confirmed the feature last month over an exchange with a Twitter user who asked: “If we implement Neuralink – can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature.”

Musk replied with a simple, “yes”.

He has also confirmed that the chip would be able to control hormone levels, which would have the potential to help with anxiety relief, among other things.

Musk has often criticized the over-reliance on AI and the potential danger it poses. He recently claimed that AI will be ‘vastly smarter’ than any human and would overtake us by 2025.

Petrol, diesel prices unchanged on Monday

0

After hefty Rs 8.38 per liter cut in diesel price in the national capital on Friday, the oil marketing companies have gone on a pause mode keeping auto fuel prices unchanged on Monday, the third successive day when auto fuel prices have not been revised.

Accordingly, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 73.56 a liter in Delhi while the petrol price remains static at Rs 80.43 a liter.

Across metros, petrol and diesel prices are keeping steady for the past seven days as pump prices of auto fuels have not been changed since then.

On Friday, diesel prices were cut by a sharp Rs 8.38 a liter following Delhi government’s decision to reduce VAT on the product from 30 percent to 16.75 percent.

The price cut has again made diesel cheaper than petrol in the city after more than a month. In fact, diesel is cheaper than petrol in Delhi by the widest margin among all metros now.

Delhi was the only major city in the country where diesel prices were higher than petrol. Diesel prices first rose above petrol in Delhi last month, much to the discomfort of the transport sector and the fuel dealers.

The Rs 1.5 a liter difference in prices had led the substantial loss of business to pump operators in Delhi as vehicles were getting diesel filled in neighboring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Rail museum in north Karnataka showcases heritage, artefacts

0

The newly set up rail museum in north Karnataka’s Hubballi showcases heritage and artifacts of the Indian Railways that takes visitors down its memory lane.

“The new museum, to open for public from Wednesday, will enthrall visitors with its rich heritage and priceless artifacts dating back to over a century when coal-fired steam engines chugged trains across the country,” an official told IANS here.

Hubballi is about 400km northwest of Bengaluru in the southern state and where the South Western Railway (SWR) zone is headquartered.

Located in idyllic settings near the railway station on Gadag road, the museum displays the evolution of advanced systems in railway operations in two cottages named after Ghataprabha and Malaprabha tributaries of the Mahadayi river in the state’s northwest region and an outdoor section.

“The museum preserves and portrays various facets of the railways’ working, including vintage rolling stock (engines), theatre coach, toy train, ticket printing machine, model train run, memorabilia shop and cafeteria,” said the official.

Under a grand arch of a bygone era, the museum has emblems of the zonal railway’s forerunner – Southern Mahratta Railways in the erstwhile Bombay Province.

“In the outdoor landscape, two narrow gauge steam engines are a prime attraction and a slew of exhibits on a track such as a coach, wagon, and tanker.

Old materials like rails, sleepers, level crossing gate, and analog signals are displayed in the galleries amidst greenery.

A narrow-gauge coach depicting unity in diversity with life-size statues of passengers from across the country is a special attraction for visitors.

The twin cottages, built-in 1907, and made part of the museum reminds of the old-age charm with indoor artifacts.

The Ghataprabha cottage features a model room with a running train and old signal instruments.

History of locomotives, wagons, and coaches is presented along with antique books and plants. It also gives glimpses of railways’ working on medical and security fronts.

A memorabilia counter where souvenirs can be bought and a history corner on old railway companies are also in the same cottage.

The Malaprabha cottage has a series of charcoal sketches in an art gallery at its entrance. An old booking office with a ticket counter, printed tickets, and iron cash chests reflect reminiscences of the ticketing era.

A station master room is simulated with a panel, apparatus, registers, furniture, and life-size statues of a station master and a points-man.

The adjacent room is designed on the theme of a waiting room with antique furniture. A parcel office has been recreated with a 150-year-old parcel weighing machine.

In view of the pandemic, only 30 visitors will be allowed inside the museum at a time to maintain social distancing. They have to wear masks and enter the place after washing hands with sanitizer dispensers at the entrance.

The museum will be opened to the public from August 5-9 with free entry from 4-7 p.m. It will be open from August 11 between 12 noon and 7 p.m. on working days (Tuesday to Friday) and between 12 noon and 8 p.m. on weekends and public holidays, with a holiday on Monday. The entry fee is Rs 20 for adults and Rs 10 for children of 5-12 years of age.

Twitter survey reveals paid service with ‘Undo Send’ button

0

Twitter has kicked off a new survey for its upcoming paid subscription service that will give users options like the “Undo Send” button (like an edit button) and the ability to tweet longer and high-quality videos, among other features.

The micro-blogging platform hinted last month it is planning a paid subscription platform that can be reused by other teams in the future. Twitter is building a subscription platform with a team codenamed “Gryphon”.

According to TechCrunch, the company has started the survey towards the service that would give users paid features like “support for profile badges, auto-responses, additional social listening analytics and the ability to run brand surveys about ads”.

The ‘Undo Send’ will provide a 30-second window for users to recall or withdraw a tweet with typos and other errors before anyone can see it.

This will, however, be only a viable alternative to the ‘Edit’ button users have been demanding for years.

The paid users will be able to choose more fonts and theme colors for background, links, mentions, hashtags, and icons.

The paid users will be able to publish videos up to 5 times longer than the current default setting for videos, with a much higher maximum resolution (8192×8192), according to the report.

They will also get a badge on their profiles that link to businesses they own or work for.

The paid users will also be able to write and set a menu of auto-responses to use in replies.

Other features include the ability to survey people about the ads the users run on the platform.

Twitter last month revealed its plan for a paid subscription service via a job listing that seeks a full-stack senior software engineer in New York to join “Gryphon”.

In its shareholder letter after the Q2 results, Twitter said: “We are also in the early stages of exploring additional potential revenue product opportunities to compliment our advertising business.

“These may include subscriptions and other approaches, and although our exploration is very early and we do not expect any revenue attributable to these opportunities in 2020”.

Actor Ravi Dubey says it is not easy for television actors to make it big in Bollywood.

“It’s not easy, because there are times certain myopic viewpoints and preconceived notions come into play,” he told IANS, adding: “But these notions will soon evaporate.”

Ravi feels the entertainment industry needs repair.

“The entertainment industry has made us whatever we are. It’s a great industry but the system needs repair. We have all at some point of time or the other been at the receiving end. It is time for a change in perspective, but I do feel we are at a point of a huge metamorphosis,” he said.

California reports over 9,000 new single-day COVID-19 cases

0

California, the new epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the US, witnessed a record surge of 9,032 new cases in 24 hours, health authorities said.

With a population of around 40 million, the country’s most populated state has so far registered a total 509,162 cases to date, Xinhua news agency quoted the Department of Public Health as saying Sunday.

In the past 24 hours, 132 new COVID-19 deaths were recorded, bringing the state’s fatalities to 9,356.

With an increase of 149,388, there have been 8,035,975 tests conducted in California so far.

“As testing capacity continues to increase across the state, an increase in the number of positive cases has been expected — increasing the importance of positivity rates to find signs of community spread,” the Department said.

The number of confirmed cases in California surpassed New York state last week as the largest count in the US.

California has not reported any recoveries so far.

Nasa SpaceX crew return: Dragon capsule splashes down

0

Nasa astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken have returned to Earth after a two-month stay on the space station.

The crew’s SpaceX Dragon Capsule splashed down just south of Pensacola on Florida’s Gulf coast, the BBC reported.

The successful end to the crew’s mission initiates a new era for the American space agency.

All its human transport needs just above the Earth will in future be purchased from private companies, such as SpaceX.

The government agency says contacting out to service providers in this way will save it billions of dollars that can be diverted to getting astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

Hurley’s and Behnken’s capsule touched the water shortly after 14.45 EDT (19.45 BST; 18.45 GMT).

The sight of the vehicle’s four main parachutes floating down over the Gulf of Mexico was confirmation the spacecraft had survived its fiery descent through the atmosphere.

Recovery vessels are now working to make the capsule safe and lift it out of the water. The astronauts will then be able to get out.

The men will be checked over by medical staff before being flown to shore by helicopter.

The astronauts’ Dragon capsule launched to the space station at the end of May on a Falcon 9 rocket, also supplied by SpaceX.

Their mission served as an end-to-end demonstration of the astronaut “taxi service” the company, owned by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, will be selling to Nasa from now on.

The Boeing corporation is also developing a crew capsule solution but has had to delay its introduction after encountering software problems on its Starliner capsule.

Manushi Chhillar: Raksha Bandhan always an inclusive occasion in my family

Actress and former beauty queen Manushi Chhillar shared that, for her, the festival of Raksha Bandhan has always stood for gender parity and equality.

According to Manushi, her parents Mitra Basu and Neelam taught the three siblings — Dewangana, Dalmitra, and Manushi — that protecting each other and standing by each other is most important.

“In my family, my parents have always instilled a sense of parity, a sense of equality in everything we do, or celebrate. So, even when we have celebrated Raksha Bandhan, it has been a very inclusive occasion for us,” Manushi said.

She added: “Dewangana, Dalmitra, and I have always celebrated it as a day to appreciate the bond we share as siblings and promise that we’ll always be there for each other. We’re best friends!”

Manushi says that her brother Dalmitra is hugely progressive in his thinking because of her parents.

“My brother, being the youngest, has himself been vocal about the fact that he needs his sisters as much as we need him. That’s the bond we share,” she said.

Manushi, who won the Miss World crown in 2017, added: “This ethos has come from our parents and how we have seen them being equaled at everything. They have been our role models because of their principles, morals, philosophies, and the way they have led and maintained their relationship.”

She thanks her for molding them as “independent, inclusive, and for grounding us with the right values”.
