Vidyut Jammwal: I don’t get disappointed about anything in life

Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal is happy that his films are releasing on OTT platforms because now people can watch his films on their own and decide whether they would like to watch somebody or not.

Vidyut’s upcoming films “Yaara” and “Khuda Haafiz” have bypassed traditional theatrical release and will be releasing on the OTT platforms Zee5 and Disney+Hotstar VIP respectively.

He insists he is not disappointed that these films will not hit the big screen. “I don’t get disappointed about anything in life. As they say, when the right time comes, the right things happen. Maybe, this is the right time for the right thing to happen,” Vidyut told IANS.

“What is this arrogance about not releasing in theatres? This is so good. The whole nation needed to watch my movies. There are people who wouldn’t watch a Vidyut Jammwal film. Now they would know who this guy is and then decide. Normally, what happens is people don’t go to the theatres because critics have their own opinion,” he added.

Citing an example of his film, “Junglee”, Vidyut claimed: “‘Junglee’ did not do Rs-100 crore business at the theatres but it is the number one rated movie on all OTT platforms. Critics didn’t enjoy the film and what they wrote didn’t let people go to the theatre. Now, people can watch it on their own and decide whether they would like to watch somebody or not.”

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp wins LMA Manager of the Year award

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has won the League Managers Association’s (LMA) Manager of the Year award.

Klopp, who guided Liverpool to their first top-flight title in 30 years, was announced as the 2019-20 recipient of the accolade on Monday. The Merseyside club won the Premier League title with seven games to spare and they finished the season 18 points clear at the top of the table.

Klopp – who was last year inducted into the LMA’s Hall of Fame and is the reigning Best FIFA men’s coach – follows 2018-19 Manager of the Year Chris Wilder, with Brendan Rodgers the Reds’ previous winner in 2013-14.

“I am absolutely delighted to get this wonderful trophy. It’s really wonderful and I had already the opportunity to have a look who won it before and there are obviously a lot of big, big Liverpool names involved,” Klopp was quoted as saying by the official club website.

“Not only Liverpool names but big, big Liverpool names as well. Bill Shankly, I think, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Kenny (Dalglish) – it looks like he’s all over the trophy everywhere! Brendan (Rodgers) won it, well deserved.

“I said it a lot of times, that I’m OK as a manager, but they make me, they make us, a really special bunch of football brains and I love to work with them together. To work together with Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz, John Achterberg, Vitor Matos, and Jack Robinson – it’s a pleasure,” he added.

The annual Manager of the Year prize, which was inaugurated in its current guise in 1993, is voted for by professional managers and awarded to “the manager who, in their opinion, has made the greatest use of the resources available to them in the current season”.

Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes was named Women’s Super League manager of the year after helping the club to a league and League Cup double.

Vaani Kapoor: I am happy doing what I like and what I want

Actress Vaani Kapoor says she does not carry the baggage of being the most relevant in Bollywood.

Shruti Haasan on nepotism: Easy to get in, hard to stay in

The conversation on nepotism in Indian cinema continues, and actress Shruti Haasan, the elder daughter of Kamal Haasan and Sarika, says while the initial opportunity to enter the film industry was comparatively easier for her, it has been tougher to survive in the business of cinema that is cut-throat by nature.

“I have to admit that the doors opened for me because of the kind of people I have grown up with, because of my parents. I got that because of my surname, I cannot deny that. But I am a slow learner, in general, in life. I did not know the right way of communication, and how to hustle to reach out to the right people. In fact, I still am socially awkward. So, it was not been easy for me to navigate. I do not take away the fact that I am privileged, though overall I have a hard journey. I would say, it was easy to get in but hard to stay in,” Shruti told IANS.

Right now, she is gearing up for her upcoming OTT release, “Yaara”, a directorial venture of her “favorite”, the National award-winning filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia. The film also features Amit Sadh, Vijay Varma, Vidyut Jammwal in a pivotal role.

“Yaara” releases on Zee5, on July 30.

Moderna begins phase-3 clinical trial of Covid vaccine in US

0

Pharmaceutical company Moderna has begun a phase-3 clinical trial to evaluate an investigational vaccine known as mRNA-1273 designed to protect against the Covid-19 virus.

The trial, which will be conducted at the US clinical research sites, will include 30,000 participants who do not have Covid-19.

“Results from early-stage clinical testing indicate the investigational mRNA-1273 vaccine is safe and immunogenic, supporting the initiation of Phase 3 clinical trial,” said Anthony S. Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the US.

“This scientifically rigorous, randomized, placebo-controlled trial is designed to determine if the vaccine can prevent Covid-19 and for how long such protection may last,” Fauci added.

The mRNA-1273 is designed to induce neutralizing antibodies directed at a portion of the coronavirus “spike” protein, which the virus uses to bind to and enter human cells.

Moderna’s vaccine was co-developed by the Cambridge University and the NIAID, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

According to the researchers, the mRNA-1273 vaccine candidate will be tested at approximately 89 clinical research sites in the US, 24 of which are part of the NIH Coronavirus Prevention Network (VPN).

Investigators will use public health data and incidence trajectory modeling to identify sustained high-incidence areas and emerging hot zones, so sites near these locations can be prioritized for enrollment.

The Phase-3 blinded trial will evaluate the safety of mRNA-1273 and determine if the vaccine can prevent symptomatic Covid-19 after two doses.

Volunteers will receive two intramuscular injections approximately 28 days apart.

Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either two 100-microgram injections of mRNA-1273 or two shots of a saline placebo.

The trial also seeks to answer if the vaccine can prevent death caused by COVID-19 and whether just one dose can prevent symptomatic COVID-19, among other objectives.

Researchers will collect and analyze blood samples to detect and quantify immune responses to SARS-CoV-2.

Investigators will closely monitor participant safety. They will call participants after each vaccination to discuss any symptoms and will provide participants with a diary to record symptoms and a thermometer for temperature readings.

Study investigators will regularly review trial safety data.

An independent data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) will review blinded and unblinded data–including safety data and cases of Covid-19 in both groups–at scheduled data review meetings.

Meanwhile, Moderna has received an additional $472 million award from the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) for the Phase-3 clinical trial of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate.

Govt bans 47 more Chinese mobile apps

0

Nearly a month after banning 59 Chinese apps, the Indian government has barred 47 more Chinese apps from operating in the country, which was largely clones of the previously banned apps, sources said.

The list of the concerned mobile applications will be published soon.

An official source told IANS said that the latest apps to be banned were found to be cloning the previously banned apps.

The development comes days after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) directed the 59 banned apps to strictly adhere to the orders or face serious action in case of violation.

The Ministry has written to all the companies concerned and said that making the apps available, directly or indirectly, would violate the IT Act and other laws.

On June 29 the government had last month banned 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, WeChat, and UC Browser, and Xiaomi’s Mi Community over national security concerns amid the border tussle in Ladakh which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galway Valley clash with Chinese PLA troops.

“These measures have been undertaken since there is credible information that these apps are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order,” it’s statement had said.

According to the ministry, the move would safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile users.

Other Chinese apps in the banned list were Club Factory, SHAREit, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu, BIGO LIVE, and more.

CRPF at forefront to keep nation safe: Modi

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on its 82nd Raising Day, saying the paramilitary force is at the forefront of keeping the nation safe.

“Greetings to all CRPF personnel on the 82nd Raising Day of this outstanding force. The CRPF is at the forefront of keeping our nation safe. The courage and professionalism of this force are widely admired,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

He further wished the force achieve greater heights in the coming years.

The CRPF, mandated to provide internal security especially in Jammu and Kashmir and Maoist-affected states, came into existence as the Crown Representative’s Police on July 27, 1939, under the British.

After Independence, it was rechristened the CRPF on the enactment of the CRPF Act on December 28, 1949, by the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The 3.5-lakh strong Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) is the country’s largest paramilitary force.

It is for the first time that the force is skipping its mega Raising Day event this year in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing protocols.

The event involving marching contingents and display of combat skills in an open ground was scheduled for March 19 in adjoining Gurugram in Haryana but was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday visited the CRPF headquarters here on the occasion and addressed the CRPF personnel posted across the country through a video link.

He also unveiled three documentaries prepared by the CRPF depicting the role of its ‘Corona Warriors’, environment protectors, and troops involved in internal security.

Lampard has done a better job than Solksjaer this season, says Keane

0

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane believes Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has done a better job this season in comparison to what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has achieved at Old Trafford.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea qualified for next season’s Champions League following respective wins over Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

Lampard has so far led Chelsea into the FA Cup final and also helped them secure a place in next season’s UCL. Solksjaer, on the other hand, guided United to third in the league and they still remain in contention for Europa League glory this term.

“Frank’s done a better job, I have to say,” Keane told Sky Sports. “I expect them to be there or thereabouts, but the way they’ve played, the way Frank comes across, he comes across really well.

“There’s no-nonsense about him, he’s made big decisions, he’s brought a lot of young players in, good players, good quality, but they’ve needed an opportunity, they took it.

“They finished in the top four and obviously if they can win an FA Cup… great achievement.

“But as Frank is reminding everybody, he’s not getting too carried away getting in the top four, but it’s a huge step forward for Chelsea again,” the former Republic of Ireland captain added.

Chelsea was hit with a transfer ban prior to the season and they had to be content with playing talented youngsters from the academy who repaid Lampard’s faith in them.

Also, Lampard has done a good job of landing top-class footballers for next term after their transfer ban was removed. They have already acquired the services of Hakim Ziyech (Ajax Amsterdam) and Timo Werner RB Leipzig) and are reportedly close to signing Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen) as well.

1,473 new corona cases in Telangana, eight more COVID deaths

Telangana recorded 1,473 new coronavirus cases, pushing the state’s total tally to 55,532, even as deaths of eight more COVID-19 patients increased its death toll to 471, health officials said on Monday.

The eight deaths were reported during the last 24 hours ending 8 pm on Sunday. As per the media bulletin issued around Monday noon, the state’s death toll was now 471.

The officials claimed that Telangana’s death rate is still quite low at 0.85 percent compared with a national average of 2.3 percent.

For a second consecutive day, Public Health and Family Welfare Director’s office released the media bulletin during the day in a new format that includes a complete list of laboratories and hospitals, both government and private, conducting COVID tests and providing treatment.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) reported 506 of the new cases. While the state capital remained a hotspot, the spike in the number of cases in districts continued.

Ranga Reddy district bordering GHMC reported 168 new cases. Two neighboring districts of Sangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri reported 98 and 91 cases respectively.

Young adults in Canada face high risk of COVID-19

0

Young adults in Canada account for the highest number of COVID-19 cases across the country, a senior health official said.

For the week ending July 22, “young adults aged 20-39 years of age account for the highest incidence rates across all ages in Canada”, Xinhua news agency quoted Theresa Tam, chief public health officer of Canada, as saying in a statement on Sunday.

Of the confirmed cases in this past week, 63 percent were young people under the age of 39.

Incidence rates were highest for males and females in the 20-29 year age group, at 14.4 and 13.8 cases per 100,000 population, respectively, followed by the 30-39 year age group.

An average of over 485 cases was confirmed infected with the virus daily from across the country in the period of time, Tam said, which raised the country’s caseload to 113,556, with 8,885 deaths, as of Sunday.

“Moreover, people in any age group, not just elderly adults, can face serious health consequences due to the complications of COVID-19. Younger Canadians are not invincible to severe illness,” Tam warned, saying 31 percent of the young adults infected with the coronavirus were hospitalized for their illness.

She urged all Canadians to continue to take steps to reduce their risk of exposure to the virus and spread the infection to others, including social distancing and wearing a mask.

Police thwart dharna at UP Raj Bhavan, whisk away Lallu, others

0

Five persons led by Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu and Rajya Sabha MP PL Punia on Monday attempted to stage a dharna in front of the Raj Bhavan here but were whisked away by police.

The policemen deployed at the Raj Bhavan rounded up the Congress leaders as soon as they sat at the entrance to the Governor’s House while shouting slogans like “Loktantra ki hatya band Karo (Stop murdering democracy)”.

They were protesting against Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra’s role in the political crisis in the desert state.

The police bundled the rounded-up Congress leaders into a vehicle and took them away.

Meanwhile, the extremely poor show by the party has evoked a strong reaction from within Congress.

“This is what happens when leaders think that they are the party and do not need anyone else. This is the most shameful show by the Congress in Uttar Pradesh. It would have been better if the so-called dharna had not been staged. Lallu has been repeatedly making a spectacle of himself and lowering the party’s prestige in this manner,” said a party leader who did not wish to be identified.

UPCC Media Convener Lalan Kumar, meanwhile, claimed that hundreds of party workers were stopped from reaching the Raj Bhavan. He said that the photographs taken earlier showed only a few leaders at the dharna site as other leaders and workers reached there minutes later.

Time capsule to be placed under Ram temple in Ayodhya (Ld)

0

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has said that a time capsule will be placed about 200 feet underground beneath the Ram Temple construction site in Ayodhya.

According to Kameshwar Chaupal, a member of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the capsule will help anyone in the future who wishes to study the history of the temple.

“The time capsule will be placed about 200 feet underground at the Ram Temple construction site. In the future, anyone who wishes to study the history of the temple will get all facts related to Ram Janmabhoomi in the time capsule,” he said.

Kameshwar Chaupal, incidentally, is a Dalit from Bihar who had laid the foundation stone for a Ram temple in Ayodhya on November 9, 1989.

Since then, the 64-year-old Chaupal has been anxiously waiting for the construction of the temple to begin.

Almost nine months after the historic verdict of Supreme Court on the Babri Masjid vs Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ayodhya on August 5 for the ‘Bhumi Puja’ ceremony to begin the construction of a grand Ram Temple.

The Supreme Court had, on November 9 last year, ruled in the favour of a Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. The court had also directed the Centre to allot an alternative five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a ‘prominent’ place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, hectic preparations have begun for the ‘bhumi puja’ ceremony that will be performed by laying a 40-kg silver brick at the sanctum sanctorum.

Three-day-long Vedic rituals, beginning August 3, will precede the main ceremony, according to the members of the Trust. The entire temple town is being given a makeover with walls being painted in vibrant colors.

The ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ ceremony in Ayodhya at the site for the proposed Ram temple on August 5 will be telecast live by public broadcaster Doordarshan.

Delhi govt launches web portal to generate more jobs

The Delhi government on Monday launched a web portal to make job opportunities available to those who lost employment due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, a move aimed at reviving the capital’s economy.

The web portal — http://jobs.delhi.gov.in – can be used by those looking for jobs and also for employers looking to recruit people. It will be called a ‘Rozgar Bazar’, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during a digital press conference.

“Those who are looking to recruit people for jobs can go to the website and update their requirements. Job seekers can also go there and update their qualifications, experience, and requirement,” the Chief Minister added.

He said that the move will immensely help businesses, construction companies, professionals, and shopkeepers in the capital city. “It is a big step towards bridging the gap between job seekers and providers.”

Kejriwal also requested the laborers who had migrated to their states during the lockdown to come back and resume their jobs. “A lot of migrant laborers have now started coming back. I request the rest to come back as the situation is stable in Delhi.”

The Labour and Employment Minister Gopal Rai said that the service is free and warned middlemen not to seek money from people. “Businessmen, construction companies, and skill centers are also requested to register.”

Rai also asked people to help those who do not know how to operate the website. The Delhi government also showed a procedural video to help people understand how to apply.

A person can first Google the website, select one of the two options – if you are on the lookout for jobs then select ‘I want a job’ or else click on ‘I want to hire’, enter the mobile number, put the OTP, select job category, build a profile and submit.

“Select the job you like and connect to the employer with the help of a call or WhatsApp,” the video showed.

Meanwhile, Delhi CM also asserted that a special order will be taken out on Monday to allow hawkers to resume their work.

Eng vs WI: Simmons urges batsmen to get ‘big scores’ in 4th innings

0

West Indies head coach Phil Simmons has urged his batsmen to convert starts into big hundreds if they want to save the ongoing third and final Test against England at the Old Trafford.

Stuart Broad’s six-wicket haul ensured the hosts took a huge first-innings lead and then he scalped two more in the second to leave the visitors on the brink on Sunday.

West Indies were left reeling at 10/2 at the end of third day’s play, still needing 389 runs to win the Test. If England wins the Test, they will clinch the Wisden Trophy and if the visitors somehow managed to eke out even a draw, they will retain the title.

“We haven’t had any centuries in this series so I’m always going to be putting pressure on them to go out there and get it,” Simmons told a news conference as per ESPNcricinfo

“The wicket is still a good wicket to bat on, so they have to set themselves a target of getting a big score on this wicket. We’ve got to show that determination to get those big scores.

“Tomorrow (Monday) is only the fourth day, so we’ve got a lot of time to bat,” he added.

Simmons also heaped praise on the fast-bowling duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad for putting pressure on the West Indies batting line-up. According to the coach, their presence in the line-up makes England a very difficult prospect for any traveling side.

“Wherever you go it’s going to be tough, in England’s it’s going to be toughest with two bowlers, one there in 600, one there in 500 wickets and it’s going to make things hard,” Simmons said.

“On this wicket, we showed in the first innings of the second Test that… we were doing what was necessary, we were getting scores, we got a few fifties, but you’ve got to carry on, and these guys keep coming and they’re relentless.

“So I think it’s, it’s one of the most difficult places to bat, especially against these two experienced bowlers,” he added.

With fall detection, the smartwatch would text the wearer’s location and a five-second sound recording to emergency contacts if there is no response for 60 seconds after a fall.

Galaxy Watch 3 will be available in Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + LTE versions.

The company has also planned to launch stainless steel and titanium models for the smartwatch.

Upcoming models may feature a newer processor, larger screens with Gorilla Glass DX protection, heart-rate monitor, sleep tracking, and ECG, among others.

Hospitalised Covid patients have low risk of stroke: Study

0

While initial reports suggested a significant risk of stroke in patients hospitalized with Covid-19, now a new study shows a low risk of stroke in patients hospitalized for coronavirus.

According to the study, published in the journal Stroke from Penn Medicine, the majority of afflicted patients had existing risk factors, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

“While there was an initial concern for a high number of strokes related to COVID-19, that has not been born out,” said study senior author Brett Cucchiara from the University of Pennsylvania in the US.

To evaluate the risk and incidence of stroke in Covid-19 hospitalized patients, researchers analyzed data from 844 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital between March and May.

The team also analyzed the data for cases of intracranial hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain). Researchers found that 2.4 percent of patients hospitalized for Covid-19 had an ischemic stroke — the most common type of stroke, typically caused by a blood clot in the brain. Importantly, the majority of these stroke patients had existing risk factors, such as high blood pressure (95 percent) and a history of diabetes (60 percent), and traditional stroke mechanisms, such as heart failure.

Additionally, over one-third had a history of a previous stroke. Researchers say the results suggest that these cerebrovascular events in hospitalized Covid-19 patients are likely tied to existing conditions, and not the sole consequence of the virus.

However, other factors could be at play and require continued research. While the precise mechanisms linking cerebrovascular events to Covid-19 remain uncertain at this time, it has recently been reported that the viral infection, SARS-CoV-2, causes inflammation and a hypercoagulable state (excessive blood clotting) — both could be potential mechanisms leading to stroke.

In addition to the incidents of stroke, the research team found that 0.9 percent of hospitalized Covid-19 patients had intracranial hemorrhage. While the rate of stroke in hospitalized Covid-19 patients is comparable to studies in Wuhan, China, and Italy, the rate of intracranial hemorrhage, which has not previously been reported, is higher than investigators expected.

The authors noted this could be tied to the increasing use of anticoagulant therapy (blood thinners) in Covid-19 patients, and requires additional exploration.
