US inches closer to banning TikTok from federal devices

0

The possibility of the US following India in banning TikTok became stronger after a proposal to bar the downloading of the short video-sharing platform on government-issued devices got the backing of the US House of Representatives.

Republican Ken Buck offered the proposal to bar TikTok from federal devices as part of a $741 billion defense policy bill, according to a report in Politico on Monday.

The House passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 by a vote of 295 to 125 on Tuesday.

There is no guarantee yet that the ban will become an act as the Senate is expected to pass its version of the bill later this week and thereafter the two chambers will sort out their differences before sending it for the President’s signature.

But the Donald Trump administration has already voiced its concerns about TikTok and even hinted that it was considering banning the app.

Earlier, on June 29, India banned 59 Chinese apps which also included the video-sharing app owned by Chinese unicorn ByteDance.

The app came under the scanner of security services over fears of it sharing user data with the Chinese government.

TikTok has denied the allegations.

Covid-19: Odisha reports biggest single-day spike of 1,078 cases

0

Odisha reported its highest single-day spike of 1,078 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s total such cases to 19,835, the Health Department said on Wednesday.

It is for the first time that positive cases in a day have breached the 1K-mark in the state.

The number of active cases in the state rose to 6,387, with 13,309 recoveries.

The Covid-19 death toll increased to 108 as five more casualties were reported in the last 24 hours — three in Ganjam district, one in Gajapati, and one in Kandhamal.

Of the new cases, 721 were reported from quarantine centers and 357 are local contacts. Ganjam reported 371 cases, followed by Khordha (121), Rayagada (96), Malkangiri (66), and Cuttack (57).

Oil companies hold Diesel, petrol price rise

0

Oil marketing companies decided to keep the pump prices of petroleum products petrol and diesel unchanged on Wednesday.

Accordingly, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 81.64 per liter in the capital, while petrol has maintained steady levels at Rs 80.43 a liter.

Oil companies had raised diesel prices marginally by 12 paise on Monday while keeping petrol prices unchanged. On Tuesday as well there was no change in the retail price of the two petroleum products.

Petrol prices had maintained the same level of Rs 80.43 a liter since June 29 when it’s pump price rose marginally by 5 paise over previous days price.

An unexpected rise in diesel prices despite slower demand has put the transport sector at a big disadvantage as rising fuel cost has further shrunk its margins.

With the hikes in diesel prices, the gap between the two auto fuels has further widened in the national capital. Last month, diesel prices overtook that of petrol in the national capital, in an unprecedented development.

Along with the Capital, petrol and diesel prices also remained unchanged in other metro cities as well.

Oil companies began a daily revision of the two auto fuels from a June 7 after keeping the price unchanged for the last 82 days during Covid-19 related lockdown. Since then petrol and diesel prices have increased by Rs 9.5-Rs 12 per liter respectively.

Nitric oxide treatment may slow progression of Covid-19

0

Researchers now claim that nitric oxide treatment can be pivotal in the world’s fight against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

Nitric oxide is an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory molecule with key roles in pulmonary vascular function in the context of viral infections and other pulmonary diseases.

In SARS-CoV-1 infection, which led to the outbreak of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in 2003, nitric oxide inhibited viral replication by cytotoxic reactions through intermediates such as peroxynitrite, the study, published in the journal Nitric Oxide, reported.

“Nitric oxide plays key roles in maintaining normal vascular function and regulating inflammatory cascades that contribute to acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS),” said study researcher Adam Friedman from George Washington University in the US.

“Interventions that are protective against ALI and ARDS can play a critical role for patients and health systems during the pandemic,” Friedman added.

According to the researchers, coronaviruses are RNA viruses that primarily infect birds or livestock but can mutate to be highly infectious and lethal in humans.

There is currently no registered treatment or vaccine for Covid-19.

The absence of a specific treatment and the high mortality rate of the virus dictate an urgent need for therapeutics that may control the replication and rapid spread of the virus.

For the results, the research team reviewed data from between 1993 and 2020 on the pathogenesis of coronaviruses and the use of nitric oxide as a treatment for respiratory illness.

The authors highlighted the potential for inhaled nitric oxide contributing to better clinical outcomes and alleviating the rapidly rising strain on health care capacity due to Covid-19.

As groups continue to publish more results with their respective nitric oxide platforms, the team recommends that dosing and protocol variations should be examined in evaluating the studies.

“With the emergence of Covid-19 as a pandemic with the ability to overwhelm the body and our health care infrastructure, patients have a pressing need for effective agents that can slow the disease in their bodies and in their communities,” Friedman said.

The authors suggest that if nitric oxide’s efficacy is illustrated for Covid-19, its use as a treatment can be pivotal in the fight against the pandemic.

Spotify launches video podcasts support

0

Swedish audio streaming giant Spotify has introduced support for video podcasts, which means that users can now watch video podcasts directly in the Spotify app on mobile and desktop.

Podcast listeners will be able to watch a small number of podcasts on video in all markets where Spotify already has Podcasts rolled out, reports GSMArena.

The ability to stream video podcasts will be available to both premium and free tier users.

Users can minimize the app or lock their phones without having to stop listening to the podcast, as the audio will continue playing in the background. However, users will still be able to download the audio version of the podcast locally to stream it offline.

In May, Spotify announced an exclusive licensing deal with Joe Rogan, one of the world’s most popular podcasters. As part of that deal, he’ll also be taking his video show over to Spotify which is slated to arrive on the platform starting September 1.

The list of podcasts that support video includes Book of Basketball 2.0, Fantasy Footballers, The Misfits Podcast, H3 Podcast, The Morning Toast, Higher Learning with Van Lathan And Rachel Lindsay, and The Rooster Teeth Podcast.

Spotify has over 286 million users globally, including 130 million paid subscribers and Archie Comics has sold over 2 billion copies worldwide since it was founded in 1939.

There are overall above 14.8 million COVID cases in the world now after the virus was first reported in China’s Wuhan in December 2019, while the deaths have crossed 615,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Vidya brought great energy to set of Shakuntala Devi: Adi Chugh

Actor Adi Chugh had a great time working with actress Vidya Balan on their upcoming film, Shakuntala Devi.

“Vidya ma’am got great energy on set, a lot of positivity. She is a very down-to-earth, kind, and sweet person. She is very developed in her craft. As soon as the director called for action, she transformed into her character and created magic. For me, it was like attending a masterclass, and watching and learning from somebody who you really respect and look up to. I was excited to work with her,” he told IANS.

Vidya essays the role of the late math wizard Shakuntala Devi. Adi will be seen as her friend.

“I’m a friend of hers who stays in the guest house where she stays while she’s in London,” he said.

The film will soon premiere on an OTT platform.

Adi has also shot for “Three Dots And A Dash” alongside Vinay Pathak.

The actor recently got back to work amidst the pandemic for a short film, and he recalled: “I was precautionary and prudent. There were a lot of measures taken on the set to make sure that we were abiding by the regulations of filming in a pandemic. We all had to travel in individual cars. London is comparatively in a lot less of a lockdown than India is. So it’s a lot easier. The rules of lockdown here (London) and social distancing have been more relaxed because the situation is not as worse as it was earlier.”

Talking about the short film, he shared: “The film is called ‘Espresso To Cappuccino’. The short film is about a man who falls in love with a girl who works like a coffee maker. Over time they start building a relationship and get closer.”

“One fine day when he goes to the cafe, he realizes that the girl he has been falling in love with has died. Heartbroken, he still goes to the cafe to have his cappuccino and remember her. As time passes, he sees a younger man at the same cafe falling for a younger girl who works there. He goes up to him and tells him that he shouldn’t wait and should tell her how he feels,” he added.

Journalist shot in Ghaziabad passes away

0

Journalist Vikram Joshi, who was shot at by armed assailants near his residence in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad on June 20, passed away on Wednesday.

The scribe was attacked when he was returning from his sister’s house along with his two daughters on a motorbike on Monday night. He had suffered a bullet injury on his head after assailants opened fire at him near his residence.

The doctor of a private hospital monitoring Joshi said that the veins in the journalists’ head had got badly damaged due to the bullet injury.

The attack is believed to be the fallout of a complaint that Joshi had lodged at the Vijay Nagar police station on July 16. He had complained that some people were harassing his niece.

In the CCTV footage, the bike can be seen being intercepted by a group of men who surrounded the bike and started pulling and hitting the rider.

The two daughters of Vikram Joshi could be seen running away the moment the bike falls.

Nine people have been arrested in connection with the shooting incident.

Meanwhile, local beat in-charge Raghvendra was put on suspension with immediate effect for not taking swift action and ignoring the complaint filed by the family of the victim.

Joshi’s brother, Aniket Joshi had said, “A few men were harassing his niece a few days ago and my brother had opposed it and also filed a police complaint. A case was also registered following which he was shot at by those miscreants.”

The journalist’s family has accused the police of inaction as the complaint was lodged on July 16 after a scuffle between Joshi and the miscreants.

Twitter purges 7,000 accounts linked to pro-Trump group QAnon

0

Twitter on Tuesday said it is removing more than 7,000 accounts associated with the far-right conspiracy theory group QAnon, citing concerns about offline harm.

QAnon emerged in the US President Donald Trump era and its supporters believe that Trump is waging a hidden battle against a secretive elite known as the “Deep State”.

Twitter said the enforcement will go into effect this week and will affect 150,000 accounts in total for breaking the policies around offline harm.

“We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behavior that has the potential to lead to offline harm. In line with this approach, this week we are taking further action on so-called ‘QAnon’ activity across the service,” Twitter Support tweeted.

The company said it will permanently suspend accounts tweeting about these topics that “we know are engaged in violations of our multi-account policy, coordinating abuse around individual victims, or are attempting to evade a previous suspension”.

Twitter will no longer serve content and accounts associated with QAnon in trends and recommendations or highlight their activity in search and conversations and block associated URLs.

“These actions will be rolled out comprehensively this week. We will continue to review this activity across our service and update our rules and enforcement approach again if necessary,” said Twitter.

QAnon is known for its connection to Pizzagate, a baseless conspiracy that accused former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of running a sex trafficking ring out of a Washington DC pizza place.

“The conspiracy inspired an armed believer to show up to the pizza shop, where he fired a rifle inside the restaurant, though no one was injured,” reports TechCrunch.

Netflix testing ‘Mobile+’ low cost subscription plan in India

0

Leading content streaming service Netflix is testing a new Mobile+ plan in India that will offer subscribers an option to stream HD content for Rs 349 per month.

New Mobile+ plan would allow subscribers to stream on only one device which can either be a phone, tablet or computer and it is actually cheaper than the basic Netflix plan priced at Rs 499 per month, reports Android Pure.

“We launched the new Mobile Plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice this offer bring. We’ll only roll it out long-term if they do,” the report quoted the company’s spokesperson as saying.

The plan is only being trialed with select users currently and based on the adoption rate Netflix will decide whether the plan can be added to the roster permanently.

Netflix launched its first mobile-only plan in India earlier this year for Rs 199 to access its content through mobile devices at a lower resolution.

Netflix has two more subscription plans for Indian users. The standard plan is priced at Rs 649 per month, and it comes with HD streaming and support for two devices and the expensive Rs 799 premium plan that lets users watch 4K, HDR content, and supports UHD streaming.

Last week, Netflix reported 22.49 million paid memberships in the Asia Pacific region with 2.66 million net additions in the last quarter.

England’s Matt Parkinson ruled out of Ireland ODIs

0

England leg-spinner Matt Parkinson has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland with a sprained ankle.

“Get well soon Parky. An ankle injury has ruled Matt Parkinson out of the Royal London Series with Ireland,” England Cricket confirmed in a tweet.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury during fielding practice on Monday, according to a BBC Sport report.

However, but it remains to be seen if England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will name a replacement for Parkinson, considering the players are already in a bio-secure bubble at the moment.

Parkinson made his ODI debut earlier this year against South Africa, finishing wicketless in his two appearances. He has also played T20Is for England, picking five wickets in the two outings against New Zealand in November 2019.

Meanwhile, England has named all-rounder Moeen Ali as vice-captain for the Ireland series. Ali will act as skipper Eoin Morgan’s deputy in the absence of Jos Buttler, who is part of the Test set-up and would be gearing up for the three-match series against Pakistan starting August 5.

England and Ireland are scheduled to play three ODIs with all the matches to be hosted at Ageas Bowl in Southampton on July 30, August 1, and August 4 respectively.

US smartphone sales down 25% in Q2, iPhone SE a bright spot

0

The smartphone sales in the US fell 25 percent in the second quarter as retails stores remained closed owing to the Covid-19 lockdown, affecting all brands although the newly-launched iPhone SE was the bright spot.

Apple was down -23 percent, LG -35 percent and Samsung sales were down -10 percent, according to Counterpoint Research’s preliminary “US Smartphone Channel Share Tracker”.

“April was the weakest month for smartphone sell-through as about 80 percent of smartphone sales channels were closed; sell-through volume was down over 50 percent. Smartphone sales for May through the end of June grew week-over-week,” said North America Research Director Jeff Fieldhack.

“June sales were stronger than June 2019 sales, which shows the US smartphone market is resilient”.

Due to lockdowns, the share of online sales grew to 31 percent from 14 percent last year.

Because of a strong online presence, Samsung and Apple volumes fared better than the overall market aided by a higher percentage of online sales.

Apple volumes grew through the quarter and were especially helped by iPhone SE volumes.

“Since the iPhone SE launched, carrier stores and national retail have been re-opening. Some channels saw large promos to draw shoppers back to stores,” said Fieldhack.

iPhone SE buyers are more pragmatic about price, less concerned with 5G, and the smaller display is not considered a hindrance.

Over 30 percent of iPhone SE buyers came from using an iPhone 6S or older handset. Over 26 percent of iPhone SE users moved over from an Android device, which is higher than normal Android to iOS switching.

The timing of the Samsung Galaxy S20 family launch, however, was unfortunate.

“Just as channels filled with devices, the majority of stores closed. This led to an estimated 38 percent fewer Galaxy S20 series activations than last year’s S10 series during the opening four months,” informed Senior Analyst Hanish Bhatia.

“Many potential Galaxy S20 purchases will simply be pushed into Q3, but some will be lost,” he added.

Ahead of WBBL 6, Meg Lanning returns to Melbourne Stars

0

Australia captain Meg Lanning will return to the Melbourne Stars after signing with the club on a three-year deal ahead of the 2020 edition of the Women’s Big Bash League.

Lanning was the Stars’ inaugural women’s captain, playing 27 matches for the Stars across the first two editions of the WBBL, scoring 1,062 runs at an average above 50. She was the tournament’s leading run-scorer in both seasons, before departing to join the Perth Scorchers. The 28-year-old joined the Scorchers on a three-year deal ahead of WBBL 3, however was unable to take the field in her first season due to a shoulder injury that saw her miss the entire campaign.

Lanning cited the opportunity to play alongside a young exciting group factored heavily in her decision to re-join the Stars.

“I’d like to thank everyone in Perth for their support during my time there but it’s great to be back in Melbourne for the WBBL,” Lanning was quoted as saying in a statement.

“I’m proud to have been part of the first couple of years at the Melbourne Stars and I’m looking forward to getting back involved with the club. We’ve got an exciting group and I can’t wait to start working with those players and the coaching staff as well.”

Lanning returns to the Stars under newly appointed WBBL head coach Trent Woodhill who is also the list manager for both men’s and women’s squads.

“Having Meg back at the Stars is huge, it’s almost like starting again. It’s the chance for the Stars to reset. We won’t be putting too much pressure on Meg to be the star of the show, but we know Meg is a star of world cricket,” said Woodhill.

“We want to be able to provide her with the environment where she can thrive, and bring out the best in her by having as much fun as possible through success and establishing a winning culture.”

The Stars will open their WBBL 6 campaign in Perth on the weekend of October 17-18 with matches against the Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers.

The sixth season of WBBL is scheduled with more matches than ever before televised live across Australia by the Seven Network and Foxtel, with seven of the Stars’ fourteen home and away games to be broadcast.

Twitter carousel back in Google Search after removal over hack

0

Google has restored the Twitter carousel in its Search results after it was removed owing to the massive cryptocurrency hack the micro-blogging platform experienced last week.

The Twitter scam that affected at least 130 prominent users led to the complete removal of the Twitter carousel of tweets from the Google search result pages.

Twitter later said they were embarrassed, disappointed, and, more than anything, sorry for what happened with some of its high-profile users as attackers successfully manipulated its employees and used their credentials to access internal systems, including getting through the two-factor protections.

A Google spokesperson Search Engine Land: “We can confirm we have temporarily removed the Twitter carousel from Search following Twitter’s security issues. Before restoring the feature we will carry out a careful review”.

The Twitter search carousel box went off for all accounts.

However, the removal did not result in Twitter losing any traffic from Google.

Google first added tweets to its search results about five years ago.

The SEOs and marketers used these Twitter carousels as a method to dominate the search results.

Last week, Twitter accounts of major public figures including US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Apple, and Uber were simultaneously hacked by attackers to spread a cryptocurrency scam.

Facebook starts labelling Trump, Biden posts on voting

0

Facebook has started labeling controversial posts from US President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden about voting as election inches closer.

The social network flagged a Trump post that claimed current rules on postal votes could lead to a “corrupt” election, reports the BBC,

The social network has also labeled several posts from Biden on voting.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last month said that they will start labeling some of the content they leave up because it is deemed newsworthy in the US election year.

“We’ll add a prompt to tell people that the content they’re sharing may violate our policies. Similarly, there are no exceptions for politicians,” he said.

“Even if a politician or government official says it, if we determine that content may lead to violence or deprive people of their right to vote, we will take that content down”.

Twitter began labeling some of Trump’s tweets in May.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg has stressed there is no deal of any kind’ with Trump.

He told Axios: “I’ve heard this speculation, too, so let me be clear: There’s no deal of any kind. Actually, the whole idea of a deal is pretty ridiculous”.

Ibrahimovic’s brace helps AC Milan beat Sassuolo in Serie A

0

AC Milan continued their unbeaten run in Serie A as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s double helped them edge past Sassuolo 2-1 away from home.

The Rossoneri entered Tuesday’s game on the back of an eight-game unbeaten run but were dealt a blow just 11 minutes into the game when Andrea Conti limped off, making way for Davide Calabria, reports Xinhua news agency.

However, Milan broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Ibrahimovic sent his diving header into the net from Hakan Calhanoglu’s floated pass.

The away side was forced to make another change when captain Alessio Romagnoli was injured and replaced by starlet Matteo Gabia.

The home side got back on level terms in the 41st minute when Calhanoglu’s arm blocked a free kick in the box, with Francesco Caputo stepping up to convert the resultant penalty.

The Rossoneri restored their lead in first-half stoppage time as Calhanoglu atoned for his error by laying on another smart pass for Ibrahimovic to complete his brace.

Sassuolo went down to 10 men shortly afterward as Mehdi Bourabia was sent off for his second bookable offense.

The victory temporarily lifts Milan up to a fifth-place with 59 points.

In Tuesday’s other Serie A match, Atalanta beat Bologna 1-0 with Luis Muriel coming off the bench to score the winner.

How Rasika Dugal would react on getting a bag full of money

Imagine getting a bag full of Rs 2,000 currency notes. Sounds exciting for sure, but actress Rasika Dugal says if such a thing ever happened then her first reaction would be of suspicion. The joy would come later.

The idea is in sync with what happens in Rasika’s upcoming film “Lootcase”. The recently-released trailer of the film shows actor Kunal Kemmu as a middle-class man who goes haywire when he finds an unclaimed suitcase filled with Rs 2000 currency notes. Rasika plays Lata, a middle-class homemaker.

She reveals what would happen if such a suitcase came her way in real life. “Funnily enough, it would pretty much be similar to what Lata’s reaction in the film is because she’s extremely morally upright and god-fearing. So, people like that would almost become suspicious of the situation,” Rasika told IANS, adding that apart from reacting in the same way, she is not much like her character in the film.

“So, my reaction — even though I am not as morally upright and god-fearing as Lata is — would be to wonder what trouble this is going to get me into. I think the joy of it would only come later, if at all. But my first reaction would be of suspicion,” she said.

The comedy-thriller also features Kunal Kemmu, Gajraj Rao, Ranvir Shorey, and Vijay Raaz. “Lootcase” is directed by Rajesh Krishnan, and written by Rajesh Krishnan and Kapil Sawant, and will release on July 31 on Disney+ Hotstar.
