Ben Mee marked his 300th appearance for the club

Burnley captain Ben Mee marked his 300th appearance for the club by scoring in a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Monday as the Clarets climbed to eighth in the Premier League table. Victory saw Sean Dyche’s visitors go level on points with Tottenham Hotspur and keep alive their hopes of European football next season.

A week on from saying how “ashamed” he was at a plane carrying the message ‘White lives Matter Burnley’ over the Etihad Stadium during a 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City, the defender won plaudits for his football at Selhurst Park as the Clarets built on a 1-0 win over Watford.

Mee ended a three-year wait for a goal in the 62nd minute with a diving header from Ashley Westwood’s free-kick after getting in front of Gary Cahill.

Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita got a hand to the ball but not a strong one and could only divert it in off a post for the only goal of the game.

Mee, simply saying it was “nice” to score, told Amazon Prime of the reaction to his post-match comments following the Manchester City defeat.

“I’ve been humbled by the response to the interview,” he said. “It’s nice to hear.”The club got quite a few emails too which I read a few of. It wasn’t a great night for us but we have responded really well to get two wins on the bounce.”

Defeat dropped Palace down to 11th place but Roy Hodgson’s men are still a comfortable 15 points clear of the relegation zone with six games to play despite a second successive defeat.

Former England boss Hodgson refused to blame his keeper for the loss, saying: “We did everything we could to find a way through but it didn’t work out for us.”

Burnley’s victory was all the more impressive as they were without three first-choice forwards in Jay Rodriguez, Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes.

“We’ve had to change things with the stretched squad we have and we did very well,” Burnley manager Dyche told the BBC.

Burnley could have opened the scoring in the 19th minute only for Dwight McNeil to shoot over the top from inside the area.Palace created chances but Cahill and James McArthur were both off target.

In the second half, the video assistant referee was called in as Palace’s Jordan Ayew avoided a red card for catching Josh Brownhill with his arm.

Then came the key moment, defender Mee stooping low for his first goal since January 2017.

Yellow alert issued for 3 coastal K’taka districts

0

The Met Department issued a yellow alert and forecast heavy rains for three coastal districts and 12 more in the south interior Karnataka, an official said on Tuesday.

“Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over south interior Karnataka from Tuesday to Wednesday,” said a Met official.

Coastal Karnataka — Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have been issued a yellow alert for the next two days with thundershowers and gusty winds.

Winds blowing at speed of 40-50 km per hour are expected on the coast and the Met department warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Meanwhile, heavy showers on Sunday night in the Vijayapura district gave rise to flash floods in the Doni river and the Sogali stream.

An overflowing Doni river submerged Talikote – Hadaginal bridge, an old one from the British times, and also some agricultural lands.

Only recently, the agricultural lands were sown with tur.

Similarly, many SSLC students also struggled to cross the bridge to reach their examination centers on Monday.

Many houses were also flooded due to the rainfall at Nalatwad and Talikote taluk.

Muddebihal, Basavana Bagewadi, and Sindagi taluks also witnessed heavy rainfall.

A 40-year-old farmer from Dharwad district was washed away in the Tuppari Halla stream, which is prone to flood during the monsoon season.

Likewise, a truck carrying cotton also got washed away in a stream in Yadgir district.

“There are an offshore trough and a circulation, because of that rain will continue in the coastal area. Only Malnad has not got sufficient rain this year. Probably after two days, Malnad may get some rains,” Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Director Srinivas Reddy told IANS.

Otherwise, the entire state got normal rainfall, said Reddy, though it is not active over Malnad.

For Bengaluru city, the Met department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain for the next three days.

Supply prosecution report copy to undertrials: HC

0

The Delhi High Court has clarified that whenever the courts call for any report either from the police or the jail authorities, a copy of the same shall also be given to the accused so that he or she can properly understand the reasons given therein and defend their case.

“A copy of the report given by the Jail Superintendent as well as the report given by the Investigating Officer should be supplied to the applicant so that accused can properly understand the reasons given therein and defend their case in the court of law. This is a basic need for access to justice and for rendering justice to the public at large,” said the court.

The observations came while a division bench of the high court presided by Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan allowed the petition filed by Chirag Madan seeking directions of the court for supplying in advance the status reports, the report by the jail superintendent and reply copy filed on behalf of the prosecution while hearing bail applications of undertrials.

The court also said that as far as possible, the report of the Investigating Officer as well as of the Jail Superintendent should be given to the court in advance.

“Similarly, copies of these reports should also be given to the accused/applicant in advance so that they can also defend their case effectively and efficiently in the court of law,” it said.

The petitioner through his plea appraised that court that over the period of time, he has experienced that it has become a trend before the trial courts not to supply the copy of such reports and replies on behalf of the prosecution in response to the bail applications filed by accused persons under Section 437,438 and 439 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Opposing the petition filed by Madan, Delhi government senior standing counsel (Criminal) Rahul Mehra said that normally, there is no reason for not supplying the copy of the report given by the Jail Superintendent or even the report of the Investigating Officer (I.O.) except in exceptional cases where reasons are recorded in writing in the order.

He further added that the report of the Jail Superintendent is given directly to the court, such report may be regarding the medical condition as pointed out by the accused or maybe on the conduct of the accused, etc.

Following which the court ruled that whenever the court is relying upon a report of the Jail Superintendent, which is normally called by the order of the court for a specific purpose on case to case basis, the copy of the same should be given to the accused, save and except in exceptional cases.

NASA wants SLS rocket boosters for 6 more Artemis missions

0

NASA is taking steps towards building Space Launch System (SLS) solid rocket boosters to support as many as six additional flights, for a total of up to nine Artemis missions.

The US space agency on Monday said it will provide initial funding and authorization to aerospace and defense technology company Northrop Grumman to order long-lead items to support building the twin boosters for the next six SLS flights.

Under this letter contract, with a potential value of $49.5 million, Northrop Grumman will be able to make purchases as the details of the full contract are finalized within the next year.

Northrop Grumman is the current lead contractor for the solid rocket boosters that will launch the first three Artemis missions, including the mission that will land the first woman and next man on the Moon in 2024.

“This initial step ensures that NASA can build the boosters needed for future Space Launch System rockets that will be needed for the Artemis missions to explore the Moon,” said John Honeycutt, SLS Program Manager at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

“The letter contract allows us to buy long-lead materials in time for manufacturing boosters for the fourth flight.”

The twin solid rocket boosters, which are mounted on the side of the SLS core stage, will produce more than 75 percent percent of the thrust for each SLS launch.

The boosters were based on the design of the space shuttle solid rocket boosters but include a fifth segment to produce the extra power needed to send the larger SLS rocket to space.

“We’re ready to process and stack the boosters for the Artemis I mission, and we are making great progress producing boosters for the Artemis II and III missions,” said Bruce Tiller, Manager of the SLS Boosters Office at Marshall.

“NASA is committed to establishing a sustainable presence at the Moon, and this action enables NASA to have boosters ready when needed for future missions.”

The Artemis program is part of America’s broader Moon to Mars exploration approach, in which astronauts will explore the Moon and experience gained there to enable humanity’s next giant leap, sending humans to Mars.

England’s museums, galleries won’t reopen on July 4

Kane Williamson was one of two captains involved in what has been widely described as one of the greatest cricket World Cup finals of all time which took place last year at the Lord’s. England managed to match New Zealand’s score which meant that the game became the first World Cup final, and in fact the first ODI match, to go into a Super Over.

New Zealand batted second and it was Jimmy Neesham and an out of form Martin Guptill who came out to bat. Williamson recently explained in a YouTube chat with ace Indian Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for the latter’s show ‘DRS with Ash’ that Guptill’s penchant for big shots and ability to run quickly helped the team management to give him the nod.

“I had a very brief discussion with the coach Gary Stead, I had a few guys in my mind who could go out to bat as we were going to bat second in the Super Over, the decision to send out batsmen was dependent on how much we were chasing and who the bowler is probably going to be,” Williamson said.

“It was about giving yourself with the best possible opportunity, Neesham was hitting the ball very well throughout the World Cup and we all know how capable Guptill really is of hitting the ball out of the park, there was a short boundary on one side of the ground. They are both quicks between the 22 yards so this helped too.”

The Super Over also ended in a tie which meant that the title was awarded to England on account of their superior boundary count — a rule which was later scrapped by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Williamson said that he was padded up to come on but that was not required. The match ended with a last-ball dash for two runs and England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler whipped the bails off before Guptill could make his ground for the second.

Williamson and his teammates were however hailed for the graciousness with which they accepted the result and the New Zealand captain was still all praise for Jofra Archer, who bowled the Super Over for England, and the match itself.

“I was padded up to come in at three, it was a different experience to be a part of, both Neesham and Guptill did a good job, Jofra Archer is a remarkable bowler, emotions were so high after the final, it was a long tournament when the time comes and it finishes, it`s like of a draining feeling as all of it finishes. The guys were filled with emotion after what really transpired,” Williamson said.

Virat Kohli Recalling his journey

0

Virat Kohli took over the captaincy of the Indian Test team in 2014 and led them to the number one position in the ICC rankings. Recalling the journey, the Indian captain took to Twitter on Tuesday to explain what the Test match between India and Australia in Adelaide in 2014 taught him and his boys despite a narrow defeat.

“Throwback to this very special and important test in our journey as the test team that we are today. Adelaide 2014 was a game filled with emotion on both sides and an amazing one for people to watch too. Although we didn’t cross the line being so close, it taught us that,” Virat Kohli captioned a couple of pictures on Twitter.

“… anything is possible if we put our mind to it because we committed to doing something which seemed very difficult to begin with but almost pulled it off. All of us committed to it. This will always remain a very important milestone in our journey as a test side,” Kohli added.

The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide, played from December 9 to 13 in 2014, saw India lose by 48 runs despite Kohli’s impressive knock of 141 runs in the second innings.

After opting to bat, Australia rode on an unbeaten knock of 162 by Steve Smith, David Warner’s 145 and Michael Clarke’s 128 to post a first-innings total of 517/7 declared.

In reply, Kohli led India’s fightback with a 115-run knock as the visitors managed to score 444 before being bowled out amid Nathan Lyon’s five-wicket haul.

Australian opener Warner scored another century in the second innings to take the hosts to 290/5 declared.

For India, opener Murali Vijay lost his wicket for 99 and Kohli for 141 in an otherwise poor display of batting.Lyon finished with seven wickets and was bestowed with the man-of-the-match award.

Indian, Chinese military hold talks to resolve border issue

0

Talks between top Indian and Chinese military delegates started on Tuesday morning to resolve the border issue in eastern Ladakh.

The meeting is taking place at Chushul wherein India has put a strong message that China’s People’s Liberation Army troops have not been aided by the disengagement consensus.

This is the third meeting between both country’s military delegates. The last two meetings at Corp Commanders level were held on June 6 and June 22.

This time it’s being held in Chushul on the Indian side. The last two meetings were in Moldo on the Chinese side. “All contentious areas during the current stand-off will be discussed to stabilize the situation,” a source said.

China had agreed to move back to Pangong Tso but it did not. India claims Line of Actual Control at Finger 8 and Chinese are sitting between Finger 4 and Finger 5. Similarly, differences exist in Depsang and Demchok areas.

On June 22, the talks took place for around 11 hours between India and China military delegates. The dialogue was held in a cordial, positive and constructive atmosphere and there was a “mutual consensus to disengage”.

“Modalities for disengagement from all friction areas in eastern Ladakh were discussed,” Indian Army had stated.

On June 22, the corps commanders of two countries’ military met at Moldo to resolve the border issue and ease tension in Eastern Ladakh. It was the second such meeting after the first one on June 6 to defuse the tensions in Eastern Ladakh.

The meeting between 14 Corps commander Lieutenant General Harinder Singh and South Xinjiang Military District chief Major General Liu Lin happened on the lines of the one they held at the Chushul-Moldo border personnel meeting (BPM) point in eastern Ladakh on June 6.

Also, Major General level dialogue took place for three consecutive days after the barbaric attack at patrolling point 14 in Galway Valley on June 15 night where 20 Indian soldiers were killed. The three consecutive days talks were carried out to ease out the tense situation and to get released 10 Indian soldiers, including four officers, who were in Chinese captivity.

Major General Abhijit Bapat, who is the Commander of the 3 Division of the Indian Army, had raised several points with the Chinese with regards to the incident on the night intervening June 15-16.

The clash occurred at the south bank of Galway river, which flows in an east-west direction before its confluence with the Shayok river, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed.

It is the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in a clash with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sources said Indian Army troopers were outnumbered by 1:5 ratio when they came under attack from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army soldiers at patrolling point number 14 in Ladakh on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

China’s PLA troopers “savagely attacked” Indian Army personnel, according to sources in the government with knowledge of the details of the Monday night clashes between the two army soldiers.

“The numbers were stacked up against the Indian Army troopers. Yet, the Indian side decided to fight the PLA troopers. The Indian soldiers were outnumbered 1:5 by the Chinese troopers,” a source said on Wednesday.

China is also said to have used thermal imaging drones to trace the Indian Army soldiers scattered on the treacherous terrain before brutally attacking them.

“It was the deadliest attack carried on Indian Army personnel by the Chinese military personnel to our memory,” the government sources said.

Several Indian Army soldiers are currently “critically injured” and are undergoing treatment.

A wedding ceremony has proved to be one of the worst cases of COVID-19 super spreader in Bihar due to which over 100 persons got infected and the bridegroom died two days after the marriage.

As the short-video making app is removed from the App Store and Google Play Store, #RIPTikTok has started trending on Twitter.

People across the country are now sharing memes, funny posts, GIFs, and expressing happiness after the ban of the app.

Many famous actors, social media influencers also came in support and the government and praised its decision on banning the apps.

Daily soap actress and famous Television star Kamya Shalabh Dan wrote from her Twitter account: “Superbbbbbbb @PMOIndia excellent news #JaiHind #BoycottChineseProducts #BoycottChineseApps.”

“Let’s be united, please. Can we be a responsible citizen and support the current situation instead of just playing blame games and trolling one and other,” famous TV actress Rashmi Desai wrote in a post which she shared on Instagram.

“Indian leftists are demanding for the return of Rs 30 crore to TikTok which they donated in PM Cares fund Face with tears of joy,” another person tweeted.

Half in 2019, ‘saaf’ in 2021, Arjun Meghwal’s message for Mamata

“The TMC was reduced to half in 2019 Lok Sabha polls and will be wiped out in 2021 assembly election,” remarked Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and senior BJP leader Arjun Ram Meghwal.

He was addressing a virtual rally on Tuesday morning for BJP cadres of West Bengal, the state that will go to polls next year.

In a strongly worded allegation, Meghwal claimed that Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee only functions as the Chief of her party and she has no faith in the Indian Constitution. Referring to recent incidents, Meghwal claimed, “Ambedkar could imagine that there would be a chief minister whose cadres would not allow a governor to go to a University.”

The Senior BJP leader also alleged that during the Corona pandemic, Banerjee’s government discriminated while providing assistance to the people. He added that the TMC administration persecuted the BJP workers, despite its party workers “continuing to serve”. He said that the TMC will be wiped out in the 2021 assembly elections.

Addressing the virtual rally from Delhi, through video conferencing, Medhawal asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India would put India in the 21st century as the world leader. He said that a similar concept was conceived by Swami Vivekananda in Chicago, the USA in 1894. Stressing about Modi’s ‘vocal for local’ or the package for the MSME sector, Meghwal tried to make a case for BJP in a state that seems top of its priorities right now, after Bihar.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo, who too was present, alleged that only Mamata Banerjee, her family, and the people living in West Bengal have benefited during the last nine years of her rule. In contrast, the state’s development has been stalled, dominated by incessant violence, he added.

Supriyo compared the reign of the left front that ruled Bengal for 34 long years with the TMC government. He claimed that the left’s era fared better than the present dispensation.

Google brings free retail listings to main Search page

Google has announced to bring free listings to the main Google Search results page in the US, helping shoppers choose the products and sellers that will serve them best, from the widest variety of options.

Free listings in Google Search results will make it more accessible to the hundreds of millions of people who shop on Google each day, connecting sellers to more customers in more places.

The feature is rolling out first on mobile, followed by desktop.

“Initially, free listings on Google Search will appear in a product knowledge panel that shows buying options for a particular item,” the company said in a statement late Monday.

This change has already produced a significant increase in user engagement, with both clicks and impressions up substantially for merchants, said Google.

“Sellers of all sizes are benefitting from this incremental traffic, particularly small and medium-sized businesses. And we already see that these changes will help generate billions of dollars in sales for retailers and brands in the US, on an annual basis,” the tech giant emphasized.

2 killed in Vizag pharma firm gas leak (Ld)

0

Two persons died and four others took ill in a gas leak at a pharmaceutical unit in Visakhapatnam on Monday night, the second industrial disaster to strike the port city in less than two months.

The incident occurred at Sailor Life Sciences Private Limited, a pharma company located at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City in Parwada on the city outskirts around 11.30 p.m. on Monday. However, it came to light only in the early hours of Tuesday.

Revenue Divisional Officer P. Kishore told reporters at the scene that Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) leaked while it was being pumped from one reactor to the other.

Initially, the leaked gas was suspected to be benzimidazole.

Six people working there inhaled the gas. While two persons died, four others were shifted to a hospital, where the condition of one of them is stated to be critical.

The deceased were identified as shift in-charge R. Narendra, 33, and chemist M. Gowri Shankar, 26.

The condition of L.V. Chandrashekhar, a helper, was critical. He was kept on a ventilator. The other affected persons were out of danger and they were identified as P. Anand Babu, a helper, and D. Janaki Rao and M. Surya Narayana, both chemists.

Visakhapatnam Superintendent of Police R. K. Meena and District Collector Vinay Chand visited the plant. The collector has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy enquired about the incident. As a precautionary measure, the factory has been closed.

Senior Life Sciences manufactures Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), pellets, and intermediates.

“The officials informed the Chief Minister that leakage was confined to the reactor unit only and there was no need for any panic as the situation is under control,” reads a statement from the chief minister’s office.

Meena told reporters that a First Information Report (FIR) would be registered into the incident and an inquiry would be conducted. “The gas leakage was arrested immediately. There is no threat to other units in Pharma City or to nearby habitation,” the RDO said.

Pendurthi MLA Annamreddy A deep Raj said the negligence by the company management led to the gas leak. He said necessary precautions were not taken while pumping the gas and this led to the tragedy.

This is the second incident at the company in five years. Two workers including a pharmacist were killed and five injured in a reactor blast at active pharmaceutical ingredients manufacturing plant of Sailor Life Sciences in September 2015.

Monday’s gas leak incident comes close on the heels of May 7 disaster at LG Polymers plant at Venkatapuram on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. Styrene gas leak from the plan had claimed the lives of 12 people and affected around 500 in the surrounding villages.

Microsoft’s 2nd next-gen Xbox may launch in August: Report

A leaked Microsoft document has revealed that the company’s second next-gen Xbox will be fully revealed in August.

Microsoft had originally planned to unveil the console, codenamed “Lockhart”, in June, but now the tech giant has moved these plans to August, reports Eurogamer.

Project Lockhart, or Xbox Series S, is expected to be a cheaper and less powerful version of the Xbox Series X, unlike Sony’s PS5 Digital Edition, which will be a standard PS5 but without an optical drive.

While Microsoft has not acknowledged Lockhart, the codename can also be found in the company’s Xbox One operating system, alongside references to Anaconda and Dante.

The Xbox Lockhart will come with 7.5 GB of usable RAM and 4 teraflops of GPU performance. It will reportedly support 1080p or 1440p gaming.

Microsoft in February had announced that the Xbox series X console will use a custom made eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, clocked up to 3.8GHz. For handling graphics will come with a custom RDNA 2-class GPU with 12 teraflops of power and 52 compute units, clocked at 1.82GHz each.

Flu virus with ‘pandemic potential’ found in China

A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been found in China by scientists, the media reported.

The scientists wrote in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the new flu strain, which the researchers call G4 EA H1N1, is similar to the 2009 swine flu, but with some new changes, the BBC reported on Tuesday.

They found evidence of recent infection, carried by pigs, which was starting in people who worked in abattoirs and the swine industry in China.

The researchers were concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.

While it is not an immediate problem, they said that it has “all the hallmarks” of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.

The scientists further said that measures to control the virus in pigs, and the close monitoring of swine industry workers, should be swiftly implemented.

Professor Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC: “Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses.”

While this new virus is not an immediate problem, he says: “We should not ignore it.”

Professor James Wood, head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, said the work “comes as a salutary reminder” that we are constantly at risk of a new emergence of pathogens, and that farmed animals, with which humans have greater contact than with wildlife, may act as the source for important pandemic viruses.

The last pandemic flu the world encountered – the swine flu outbreak of 2009 that began in Mexico – was less deadly than initially feared, largely because many older people had some immunity to it, probably because of its similarity to other flu viruses that had circulated years before, said the BBC report.

That virus, called A/H1N1pdm09, is now covered by the annual flu vaccine to make sure people are protected.

The development comes as the world is still struggling to contain the COVID-19 pandemic that originated in China’s Wuhan city last December.

As of Tuesday, the virus has infected a total of 10,302,867 people globally, while the death toll stood at 505,518.
