Talks over disengagement to continue as China releases 10 Indian soldiers

0

After the release of 10 Indian Army personnel, including four officers, from Chinese People’s Liberation Army captivity, the process of disengagement of troops will continue next week, sources said.

The dialogue will take place to ensure that the Chinese PLA pulls back all its troops from the Galway valley and removes all the military-grade tents which housed its troops.

The Indian Army personnel were released after relentlessly hectic negotiations with the PLA for three consecutive days.

These soldiers, held captive after a barbaric fight unleashed by Chinese troops, were released on Thursday afternoon.

The Indian Army on Thursday evening said that there are no soldiers “missing in action” during a violent clash with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army at Galway Valley in Eastern Ladakh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also said no Indian Army personnel were missing or not accounted for.

The statement was made after 10 Indian soldiers were held in captivity from Monday night onwards were released.

It was the Major General-level dialogue between both the militaries for three days that paved way for release of the Indian soldiers. It is, however, not clear what led to the Indians being taken captive by the Chinese.

The clash occurred at the South bank of Galway river, which flows in an east-west direction before its confluence with the Shayok river, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed.

These were the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in a clash with the Chinese PLA since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sources said the Indian Army troops were outnumbered by a 1:5 ratio when they came under attack from the Chinese PLA soldiers at patrolling point number 14 in Ladakh on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

China’s PLA troopers “savagely attacked” Indian Army personnel, according to sources in the government with knowledge of the details of the Monday night clashes between the two sides.

“The numbers were stacked up against the Indian Army troopers. Yet, the Indian side decided to fight the PLA troops. The Indian soldiers were outnumbered 1:5 by the Chinese troops,” the sources said on Wednesday.

China is also said to have used thermal imaging drones to trace the Indian Army soldiers scattered on the treacherous terrain before brutally attacking them.

“It was the deadliest attack carried on Indian Army personnel by the Chinese military personnel to our memory,” the government sources said.

“We were outnumbered,” admitted an Indian Army officer, talking about the clash that went on for six to seven hours.

The Indian Army said its soldiers went to the spot where the clashes happened without any animosity and were displaying friendly gestures to the Chinese side when they were there to check if the de-escalation agreement was being followed as promised.

Several Indian Army soldiers are currently “critically injured” and are undergoing treatment.

NC hails Gadkari statement, wants J&K special status restored

0

The National Conference (NC) on Friday demanded the restoration of special status for Jammu and Kashmir.

A statement issued jointly by NC president Farooq Abdullah and ten senior party leaders welcomed the statement made by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in which he said India is not interested in the expansion of its land area either from Pakistan or China.

The NC called Gadkari’s statement “a shift from jingoism to peace”.

While demanding restoration of the special status for J&K, the NC statement expressed deep anguish over the skirmishes on the LoC and the LAC and the consequent loss of life and property.

“Revocation of August 5, 2019 decisions and unconditional dialogue with all stakeholders is pivotal to lasting peace and prosperity in the region”, the statement said.

It also said that all traditional routes, including Kargil-Skardu, Jammu-Sialkot, and Poonch-Rawalakot should be opened, allowing free movement of people across the LoC and the LAC to promote people to people contact and strengthen inter-regional trade and cultural links.

Rahul Gandhi had posted that soldiers were sent “unarmed to martyrdom”

0

Rahul Gandhi had posted that soldiers were sent “unarmed to martyrdom”. He was fact-checked by Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who said soldiers always carry arms but the rules of engagement do not allow use firearms during face-offs.

Indian soldiers were assaulted with iron rods and clubs wrapped in barbed wire laced with nails in the fight with the Chinese in Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh, close to the Line of Actual Control. Many were thrown off a steep ridge and some of the soldiers fell into the river Galwan.

Mr Jaishankar told his China counterpart Wang Yi the incident would have a serious impact on the bilateral relationship and China must take corrective steps. But both ministers agreed that “neither side would take any action to escalate matters.”

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on oxygen support after condition worsens

0

The condition of Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Friday worsened, two days after he tested positive for coronavirus.

The 55-year-old Jain has been shifted to ICU ward of another Covid-19 hospital from Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, where he was admitted earlier this week. He was put on oxygen support after his lung infection increased.

Jain was tested twice this week after he developed symptoms of coronavirus, including high fever and breathing difficulty. He tested positive the second time on Wednesday.

On Sunday, he was present at a meeting between the Union Home Ministry and the Delhi government. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, L-G Anil Baijal, and Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.

Earlier on Friday, another Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi Marlena tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in quarantine in her house.

This came amid a sudden spurt in cases in the national capital. In Delhi, the cases are inching towards the 50,000-mark and over 1,969 people have succumbed to the disease.

On June 9, Chief Minister Kejriwal had tested for the coronavirus after he complained of mild fever and sore throat. His test report, however, came out as negative.

Sonu Nigam open up about the “cruel” machinations of the music industry

0

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death prompted Sonu Nigam to open up about the “cruel” machinations of the music industry in a new video blog. The 46-year-singer shared his vlog with a troubling caption, “You might soon hear about suicides in the music industry”, in which he called out the “mafias” of the music industry, two of them in particular, without taking names. “Sushant Singh Rajput died, an actor died.

Tomorrow, you can hear the same about a singer, or a composer, or a lyrics writer. Because the music scenario in our country… there are bigger ‘mafias’ here that in the film industry, unfortunately,” said Mr Nigam. “The power rests in the hands of two of them… just two from the music industry. They own companies. They have the power to make someone sing or not sing,” he added.

In the comments section on Sonu Nigam’s video, several followers said that the music labels which the singer talked about are probably T-Series, Zee Music Company and even YRF Music.

“Everybody wants to ‘rule’ the business,” said Sonu Nigam, who repeatedly requested to the alleged “music mafias” to be kind and considerate towards new talent with messages such as these addressed to them: “Don’t do this! This is not right”, “You will be questioned”, “Be a little kind please, to the newcomers.”

“It’s very difficult for the new kids, very difficult… I speak to every one of them. They are troubled that the producer wants to work with them, the director wants to work, even the music composer wants to work with them but the music company will say: ‘This is not our artiste’,” he added.

“I was lucky that I joined (the industry) at a young age, I escaped the clutches,” he added, saying he joined music industry in Mumbai in 1991 but “I got out of it. I don’t have any wish to sing for the last 15 years. It’s ok. I am happy in my own world. But I have seen the frustration in the eyes, in the voice, in the words of new singers, new composers, new lyrics writers… tears of blood, sometimes.”

Sonu Nigam also made an oblique reference to actor Salman Khan as he talked about an actor, at whom “fingers are being pointed” right now. Talking about replacing singers, Sonu Nigam said: “He’s done that with Arijit Singh.” In 2016, Mr Khan had reportedly asked to drop a song recorded by Arijit Singh from his film Sultan after he was offended by the singer’s mannerisms at an award show.

Sonu Nigam wrapped his video alleging that in the past, he was called for song recordings and then his songs were dubbed by different artists. “If you can do this with me, then what you guys must have been doing with the newcomers,” he said and added: “Hope more people don’t die by suicide.”

Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide, say the police, who are carrying out an investigation. He was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14. The police will also probe allegations that Mr Rajput was depressed because of professional rivalry. Politician Sanjay Nirupam alleged Sushant lost six out of some seven films which he had signed in the last few months.

Shocked by the video of African-American man George Flyods last minute, musician John Legend feels any of his family members could have been under the white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvins knee.

“I’ve talked to so many of my friends about that video… and what they’ve said to me is…, ‘I see myself under that officer’s knee. I see my dad under that officer’s knee’,” Legend told NBC newsperson in a taped interview, reports aceshowbiz.com.

In the video, which will air on June 21 before Legend hosts a Father’s Day TV special, the singer added: “We do see our family members when that happens.

“My younger brother has a son who is 20 years old, and I could see him in moments like that having a misunderstanding with officers and I worry for him… particularly once they hit a certain age and their body is deemed as threatening to other people,” he added.

Floyd died last month after a Minnesota police officer pressed down his knee on his neck during a street arrest, which was caught on camera. The incident sparked protests.

Cong uses social media to corner BJP on China issue

0

To counter the BJP onslaught on the China issue, Congress has initiated a social media campaign in which party’s prominent leaders are posting videos supporting the Army and criticizing the government for mishandling the issue with different hashtags.

A Congress source said that after some media houses tried to blame the Army and the BJP tried to implicate the Congress, the party has gone on an overdrive to support the Army on all social media platforms.

“Congress is not a ‘cheerleading’ squad of the BJP government, it is the representative of the people who deserve to know why the first time in 45 years our soldiers have lost their lives in the Ladakh sector. INC always stands with armed forces who serve the Nation and not any particular government,” said Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill.

He also posted one such video and said about the drive to corner the BJP. “Congress has always played a role of constructive opposition by supporting the government in an hour of crisis and at the same time holding it accountable in the public interest.”

Apart from Shergill, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also posted a video and said, “Our entire nation pays homage to the supreme sacrifice of our martyrs. The nation is asking some pertinent questions from the Government of India; will the PM & RM answer to the nation?”

Congress made videos of its spokespersons and leaders and used #TreacherousChina and #OurArmyOurPride among other hashtags and posted on social media.

The Congress said on its social media accounts, “Government of India must be far more firm in responding to Chinese aggression. India cannot let the ultimate sacrifice made by our armed forces to go in vain.”

Another spokesperson Sharmishtha in the video said, “At a time when the whole world is reeling under the deadly threat of COVID-19, China’s aggression towards this peaceful neighbor is not only unacceptable but cowardly”

“Did BJP’s ego & denial of the truth put our brave jawans at risk? The govt must answer, who is responsible for the martyrdom of our soldiers? tweeted the party.

Priyanka alleges witchhunt by UP Govt

0

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Friday targeted the Uttar Pradesh government over an FIR against a journalist in Varanasi, alleging the state government has registered FIRs against journalists, former officials, and the Opposition for bringing the truth to light.

Priyanka Gandhi posted the link to a website through Twitter on Friday, saying, “The UP government cannot suppress the truth by filing an FIR. There has been chaos on the ground during the corona pandemic. By revealing the true situation on the ground things could be improved but the UP government has chosen to file FIRs against journalists, former officers, and the Opposition.”

A woman from Domari village in Varanasi has lodged an FIR against a journalist and editor of a news portal for allegedly misrepresenting the woman’s statement as well as mocking her for her caste and financial status.

Kotwali regional officer Pradeep Singh Chandel said, “A woman from Domari village had filed a complaint with the Ram Nagar police last week, on the basis of which an FIR has been lodged against the editor-in-chief and reporter of a news portal.”

According to Rosatom, this is the 17th shipload during the project implementation and the first one – after the restrictive measures related to the prevention of the further spread of COVID-19.

India’s atomic power company Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is building two more 1,000 MW reactors at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district with Russian equipment. The first two reactors of similar capacities are generating power.

“In the context of the restrictions imposed in Russia and India, Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division, the Indian customer, Russian manufacturers, the port of Saint-Petersburg have kept on working, meeting all the measures prescribed, on the construction of the second phase of Kudankulam NPP (nuclear power plant),” the Director for projects in India, Vladimir Angelov, said.

Supreme Court declines to stay Central Vista project

0

The Supreme Court Friday refused to stay any groundwork pertaining to the Central Vista project.

Petitioner Rajeev Suri had moved the top court challenging the project on the ground that there is an illegal change in land use and sought directions from the court to stay the project. Petitioner’s counsel argued that the environmental clearance committee passed some order, and this matter was considered later, but till then, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Centre, must assure that no further action will be taken.

A bench comprising Justices A. M. Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari, and Sanjiv Khanna observed: “If the Centre goes ahead when we are seized of this matter, then it will be at their own risk and cost.” The bench queried the petitioner’s counsel: “When we ask you to argue, then you talk about amending your petition.” Mehta contended that the amended petition be filed and the Centre will file a reply. Petitioner’s counsel sought that no work on the ground is allowed, which includes the paperwork.

Mehta opposed the argument for a stay on the project. “Lordship can say whatever happens will be subject to the orders of the court”, argued Mehta. The bench allowed the petitioner to amend the plea and scheduled the next date of hearing on July 7.

On April 30, the apex court had declined to stay the Central Vista project, estimated to cost Rs 20,000 crore, which seeks to build a new Parliament building and other central government offices in the Lutyens’ zone in central Delhi. The plan for the project has been prepared in accordance with India’s 75th Independence Day in 2022. The work on the Central Vista is slated for completion by November 2021.

The Central Vista houses iconic buildings like the Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the North and South Block buildings, which house important ministries, and also the India Gate. The Centre is proposing to redevelop by constructing a new Parliament house, a new residential complex, which would house the Prime Minister and the Vice President besides several new office buildings.

Modi govt’s response to China will be calibrated, not impulsive

0

The Narendra Modi government is unlikely to take any rash decision despite the recent military aggression by China over the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which left 20 Indian soldiers killed and over a billion Indians seething in anger.

Anger against China did result in some action. For instance, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) scrapped its contract with Beijing National Railway Research and Design Institute of Signal and Communication Group Co. Ltd. “In view of poor progress, it is decided by DFCCIL to terminate the contract with Beijing National Railway Research and Design Institute of Signal and Communication Group Co. Ltd,” the Indian Railways said in a statement.

However, the government’s overall response, military or economic, is set to be calibrated and well-thought-out. Reason? India’s economy is largely linked to the dragon country. China is India’s second-biggest trade partner, the first being the US.

India is dependent on supplies from China for critical raw materials, including active pharmaceutical ingredients or APIs required for the production of drugs and antibiotics, components used by automobiles, and other white goods manufacturers.

Notwithstanding the clarion call by many associations including the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to boycott Chinese goods, the government will not rush into taking any extreme measures.

That apart, there are many Indians who are operating out of China or have factories in the country.

India is likely to push the pedal on manufacturing so that the Make in India scheme takes off and replaces imports. “It is a wait-and-watch situation. The factories run by Indians in China have not been affected and it is business as usual for them as of now,” Anil Bhardwaj, secretary-general, Federation of Indian Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises (Fisme) told IN. He added that the situation may ease soon.

A shortage of API could have far-reaching implications on the Rs 175 lakh-crore drug industry, especially at a time when the country has been hit by the spread of coronavirus. Not only will this make medicines more expensive but in many cases, there could be shortages too. India’s exports of medicines could also be impacted.

Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) president Sharad Kumar Saraf, who has a factory in mainland China, said that work has not been interrupted.

Meanwhile, India’s trade with mainland China and Hong Kong showed a drop of 7 percent in 2019-20 to $109.76-the the sharpest fall in the last seven years. In 2018-19, trade between the two countries grew by only 3.2 percent after a huge increase of 22 percent in the previous financial year.

Indian consumers have been gradually turning away Chinese goods even before the spread of the virus and the border conflict.

There has been an unprecedented rise in anti-Chinese sentiment in the country after the spread of the coronavirus dented India’s economic activities leaving many jobless and others with lower wages. While India may not be able to choke imports of raw materials required for finished goods, demand for Chinese finished goods could see a huge drop in the coming months.

Nutrition in pregnancy during summer

0

Pregnancy is a journey where a mother must focus on her lifestyle, as much as she cares for her unborn child.

A mother should avoid gaining excessive weight, “She must try to prevent gestational diabetes and hypertension too. A healthy lifestyle is very important. Especially during summers when most of us tend to eat less. A Pregnant woman must take extra care in terms of what she eats so that her baby grows in a healthy way and she still stays fit,” believes Dr. Mahima Bakshi, Mother and Child wellness consultant at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital and author of ‘Birthing Natural’.

Trimester one

Plenty of fluids as most women can feel nauseous in this phase
Coconut water, smoothies, fresh juices, soups, milk, and buttermilk can be great options.
Avoid tea coffee as it can worsen the acidity or morning sickness however chamomile tea can help in reducing nausea.
Also, fruit like watermelon and veggies like cucumber contains good hydration.
Small frequent meals help in preventing nausea.

Trimester two

Appetite increases, hence avoid indulging in junk food or outside food.
Prefer home-cooked food with good protein, simple carbs, and lots of vitamin-rich foods like fruits veggies, daal, chicken, paneer.
Iron-rich sources like green veggies, carrot, and beetroot are important.
A handful of nuts must be taken for good omega fatty acid. Enjoy eating and enjoy the food cravings. But ensure that you do not gain too much weight suddenly.
The weight gain must be gradual. Breathing relaxation exercises and prenatal yoga is helpful to maintain a gradual weight gain.

Trimester three

Appetite slows down as digestion slows down hence some physical activity and prenatal exercises help.
The body prepares for labor so some good fats help – nuts, cooking oils, avocado, fish can be a great option.
Flaxseeds also help as a good source of omega.
Small frequent meals are better than large heavy meals.
Many develop constipation during this phase due to hormonal changes and reduced digestion.
Hence lots of fiber in the diet is important. Flax seeds, dates, bananas, nuts, and plenty of water will help.

All in all, to-be mothers should stay active, exercise to stay fit, and prefer to eat home-cooked fresh food at frequent intervals.
Avoid large heavy meals, maintain good hydration, and take lots of fruits and veggies. Seasonal fruits is always a better option. And add lots of natural probiotics to your diet to maintain a healthy gut flora in the body.

Microsoft acquires data modeling firm ADRM Software

0

Microsoft has acquired ADRM Software, a leading provider of large-scale industry data models, which are used by large companies worldwide as information blueprints, for an undisclosed sum.

North Carolina-based ADRM’s industry data models have been built and refined over decades for business-critical analytics.

“An industry data model enables organizations to more holistically capture and define business concepts, refine and integrate processes, and build interoperability in their ecosystem,” Microsoft said in a statement on Thursday.

According to Ravi Krishnaswamy, CVP, Azure Global Industry, Microsoft has been investing in the power of data and artificial intelligence (AI) to continuously innovate, influence and enhance customer experience and partner growth.

“Data and AI are the foundation of modern technological innovation, yet businesses today struggle to unlock the full value data has to offer as fragmented data estates hinder digital transformation,” said Krishnaswamy.

Combining comprehensive industry models from ADRM with limitless storage and compute from Azure allows for the creation of the intelligent data lake where data from multiple lines of business can be harmonized together more quickly.

“Together with Microsoft Azure, these capabilities will be delivered at scale, enabling our customers to accelerate digital progress, and reduce risk in a variety of major initiatives,” said the company.

Cricket Australia ready for a female CEO, says Ellyse Perry

0

Star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry believes her country’s cricket is ready to be run by a female boss.

On Tuesday, Cricket Australia appointed Nick Hockley as its interim Chief Executive following the resignation of Kevin Roberts who had been facing severe criticism for his handling of the shutdown since a decision to furlough about 80 percent of staff at the head office in April amid the COVID-19 crisis.

CA Chairman Earl Eddings has said that the board would conduct an international search for a new chief executive to lead the organization as cricket prepares to spring back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think Cricket Australia has been ready for a female CEO for a long time,” Perry told reporters in a video call on Friday.

According to Perry, Western Australia Cricket Association boss Christina Matthews can be the one in the reckoning.

“I know Chris (Matthews) was in discussions for the last round of hiring for the role,” said Perry.

“I don’t think it’s something that’s new.

“We’ve got a number of women working in high executive roles in Cricket Australia, Belinda Clark, and Steph Beltrame to name a couple.

“They are absolutely pivotal in the way that we operate. So, yeah, I think there’s some really strong representation,” she added.

According to a report in ‘The Australian’, an influential figure in Cricket Australia has asked former England captain Andrew Strauss, who had served as England Cricket director between 2015 to 2018, to apply for the post of CEO.

UP: Inter-faith couple traced, girl says she married on her own will

0

The Uttar Pradesh police have tracked down an inter-faith couple whose elopement last week had triggered communal unrest in the district.

The girl had eloped days before her wedding slated for June 18.

The girl’s family had approached Nangal Soti police station alleging that she was kidnapped by a man of another community.

A case of abduction was then filed against the youth.

The police later received a video in which the girl had sought protection from her family members saying that she has married a man of her choice.

Bijnor Superintendent of Police (SP) Lakshmi Nivas Mishra said. “The girl might have apparently married the accused. The lawyer of the youth contacted us and provided a video showing that the girl had married him, without any pressure. They have also sought police protection. We have asked them to produce documents about their marriage.”

The couple was tracked down on Thursday and will be produced before a court on Friday.

The matter had taken a communal turn when a member of a lesser-known saffron outfit allegedly threatened to set the police station on fire if the girl was not recovered and sent back home.

In a video, Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh State General Secretary, Rajni Jauhar, could be heard saying, “Police are supporting the minority community. Family members of the girl are making rounds of police officials but they are not paying heed to them. The wedding of the girl was slated for June 18. Had the girl belonged to a minority community, police would have recovered her immediately. If she is not recovered, people will come on the streets and a police station will be set ablaze.”

Earlier this week, scores of villagers led by Hindu Vahini and Hindu Jagran Manch staged a ‘dharna’ and threatened ‘retaliatory’ action if the police failed to act.

District General Secretary of Hindu Jagran Manch, Abhishek Tyagi, had said, “A youth of minority community has abducted the girl.

Her family members have filed a case against the accused. Family members of the girl are making rounds of police officials. We will not tolerate ‘love jihad’ here.”

Chandel said that this case had now been given to him for investigation.

Domri is one of the villages adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an MP.

The woman has said in the complaint that she works as an outsourced sanitary staff with Varanasi Municipal Corporation and lives in Domri village.

She said that during the lockdown, a woman identifying herself as a journalist reached her village and started talking about the lockdown.

“I told her that I was not facing any problem in feeding my family. However, later I came to know that she falsely mentioned in her news story that I work as domestic help and wash utensils at others’ houses. She has also mentioned in her story that I had just tea and roti to eat and my children were starving during the lockdown,” she said in the FIR.

The woman further said that “By mentioning that I and my children slept on an empty stomach, this reporter has mocked my poverty and caste. It has caused me mental trauma.”

She has sought action against the chief editor and reporter of the portal.

Cong appoints Maken as observer for Manipur

0

The Congress party has appointed Ajay Maken as an observer to supervise the political situation in Manipur after the BJP government was reduced to a minority there following the withdrawal of support by MLAs.

Ajay Maken and party’s state in-charge Gaurav Gogoi will reach Imphal on Friday.

Congress has staked claim to form the government in the state and has sought the removal of the speaker.

The latest political development comes a day after the three-year-old BJP-led coalition government in Manipur headed by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh was on Wednesday night pushed into a political crisis as three BJP MLAs quit the party and joined the Congress and six Legislators — four of National People’s Party (NPP), one Trinamool and an independent — withdrew support.

“We have told the Governor that the Congress, in alliance with the other parties and Independents, is now capable of forming a secular government headed by three-time Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh. We have handed over a letter signed by Okram Ibobi Singh to the Governor.”

After the latest political development, the strength of the BJP-led alliance government has been reduced to a minority in the Assembly, effective strength of which is 59 after Shyamkumar Singh, who had defected to the BJP from Congress, was disqualified.
