WHO concerned over rising COVID-19 cases in Europe

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe rang the “alarm bells” by pointing out disturbing increases in “incidence and numbers” of coronavirus infections in eastern Europen countries despite weeks of COVID-19 cases declining in other nations.

“In the past month, the number of European countries showing significant increases in cumulative incidence has more than tripled from six to 21 countries,” Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, said during a regular virtual meeting hosted in Copenhagen on Wednesday.

Kluge’s remarks dispelled any notion of taking false security from WHO statistics that could show the European region had “stabilized at around 17,000 to 20,000 cases per day on average due to weeks of cases declining in other countries”.

“COVID-19 is still in a very active phase in many countries. It is crucial that we continue to recover and rebuild following the lockdown,” said the WHO official.

Kluge emphasized the need to remain diligent and lift restrictions with care, citing the reopening of schools in a few countries that resulted in local “flares”.

In his oft-repeated clarion call to countries in the region, Kluge asked them to strengthen the preparedness and readiness of their emergency services and routine health system delivery, because he was “hoping for the best but preparing for the worst” of a likely resurgence of COVID-19.

“We are not out of the woods. Lockdowns and social distancing have gained us time,” he said, reiterating that “the risk remains high across all countries”.

Kluge said that “it is important that the authorities fully invest in having an aggressive track, test and trace surveillance system to avoid costly additional lockdowns in the weeks and months ahead should the virus rebound”.

Salute Galwan martyrs, says grandson of Rasool Galwan (Special Ground Report From Leh)

0

The Galway valley which has emerged as the epicenter of escalating tensions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China shares a deep emotional link with the family of Galway in Ladakh.

The valley was named after a local explorer Ghulam Rasool Galway.

Speaking about the current standoff at the LAC, his grandson Mohammad Amin Galway said he salutes the jawans who made the supreme sacrifice in Galway valley while fighting with the Chinese PLA.

“War brings destruction, hope the standoff at the LAC is resolved peacefully,” he said.

Recounting the deep association the family has with the Valley he said his grandfather was the first to reach the Aksai Chin area while trekking with the British in 1895 via the Galway valley.

“On the way to Aksai Chin the weather turned bad and it was difficult to save the British team. Death was in front of their eyes. Rasool Galwan steered the team to the destination,” he said. “The British were happy and asked him what reward he wants, he said I don’t need anything but name the nallah on my name.”

He said it is not the first time China has tried to occupy it, but such attempts in the past were aborted by the Indian troops.

“China had in the past also eyed the valley in 1962, but our soldiers evicted them, even now they are trying to do this, unfortunately, some of our jawans were martyred, we salute them,” Mohammad Amin Galway said.

He said the escalation at the LAC is not a good sign and the best thing would be to resolve the issues peacefully.

Ram Kapoor: Managed to scare myself with villain’s role in ‘Abhay 2’

0

Actor Ram Kapoor is all set to play a negative character in the second season of the series “Abhay 2”, and he says the experience of being bad on-screen was unlike anything he has done before.

“The promo is just a glimpse. The character is going to leave the audience stunned. He has no name, he is like an unsolved riddle, an extremely mysterious psycho killer/super-villain. The writing is perfectly interlaced with the character, giving it layers,” Kapoor said.

He added: “It was a tough play for me, unlike anything I have done before and I even managed to scare myself a bit. God willing, the fans would give me as much love for this as they have given me all these years.”

The eight-episode series marks the return of Kunal Kemmu as an investigative officer, who has a knack for solving crimes with the mind of an offender. Directed by Ken Ghosh, the show will premiere on ZEE5.

Pelosi urges removal of portraits of Confederate House speakers

0

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requested the removal of portraits of previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy from display in the US Capitol.

Pelosi on Thursday made the request in a letter to Cheryl Johnson, clerk of the House of Representatives, a day before Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Tomorrow, Americans will mark Juneteenth,” the California Democrat wrote. “Very sadly, this day comes during a moment of extraordinary national anguish, as we grieve for the hundreds of Black Americans killed by racial injustice and police brutality.”

In the letter, she asked Johnson to remove the portraits of four previous speakers who served in the Confederacy: Robert Hunter of Virginia (1839-1841), Howell Cobb of Georgia (1849-1851), James Orr of South Carolina (1857-1859), and Charles Crisp of Georgia (1891-1895).

House Democrats introduced a bill last week that would remove Confederate statues from the US Capitol.

There are currently 11 statues of people who served in the Confederacy, either as officials or soldiers, displayed in the Capitol complex.

The statues are all part of the National Statuary Hall Collection, created in 1864 with a law that allows states to select two statues of deceased individuals to be displayed in the US Capitol.

The legislation from the Democrats would remove all of the Confederate statues in the collection within 120 days. The statues could either be reclaimed by the states or given to the Smithsonian Institution, a US museum and research complex.

Republicans have argued that Congress cannot remove the statues without passing a new law and indicated that the decision should be left up to the states.

“What I do think is clearly a bridge too far is this nonsense that we need to airbrush the Capitol and scrub out everybody from years ago who had any connection to slavery,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters earlier this week.

The moves came in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Protests in response to Floyd’s death, and more broadly to police violence, spread across the United States, as congressional lawmakers and states are pushing for police reforms.

Fatima Sana Shaikh on rumours of dating Sanya Malhotra

0

Actress Fatima Sana Shaikh says she laughed off reports of her dating her “Dangal” co-star Sanya Malhotra.

“We simply laughed about it. Just because we are good friends, they assumed the worst,” she said, talking about the rumor.

Asked about three things that she learned from Sanya, Fatima said: “I have learned a lot from her. For one, Sanya likes to keep everything clean. While she is an introvert and I am an extrovert, I learned to hold myself back at times. I also learned a lot from her dedication to work.”

Talking about her diverse religious background and upbringing, the actress said: “It makes me feel like the ideal poster girl for secular India. The beauty of our country is that we are so diverse and all of us are okay with just being ourselves, follow our own religion and accept everybody.”

On Bollywood superstars, she clearly likes Shah Rukh Khan. “I would love to see Shah Rukh Khan strip on the streets of Mumbai!” she said.

“I think the perfect scene of a man proposing to his wife atop the Eiffel tower would be of Shah Rukh Khan and me,” she added while opening up on the Zee Cafe show, “Starry Nights Gen Y”.

Texas COVID-19 hospitalizations hit record highs for 7 days

0

The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients in the U.S. state of Texas hit record highs for seven consecutive days, local media reported Thursday.

According to figures released by the Texas Department of State Health Services, there are 2,947 people currently in hospitals being treated for COVID-19 on Thursday, the seventh consecutive day the state reported a record number, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Texas Tribune reported that since the beginning of June, hospitalizations have increased. The latest seven-day average for the number of people hospitalized is 2,468, almost doubling the number in late May.

Responding to the increasing numbers of hospitalized patients and confirmed cases in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott said earlier this week that the state’s hospital bed capacity is “abundant.”

The governor urged people to stay at home as much as they can, wear masks in public places, and keep social distance to slow down the spread of the coronavirus. Businesses, especially bars and restaurants, should follow the state guidelines, he noted.

Nine Texas mayors recently asked Abbott to allow them to make masks mandatory. The mayors said that wearing masks would help avoid a second wave of coronavirus that might shut down the economy again.

Early in the pandemic, some Texas cities tried to mandate face coverings. Abbott overruled them.

UN chief urges support for refugees, host communities

0

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged support for refugees and their host communities on the occasion of World Refugee Day.

Nearly 80 million women, children, and men around the world have been forced from their homes as refugees or internally displaced people. Ten million of these people fled in the past year alone, said Guterres in a message for World Refugee Day, which falls on June 20, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.

“On World Refugee Day, we pledge to do everything in our power to end the conflict and persecution that drive these appalling numbers. Today, we also recognize the generosity and humanity of host communities and countries that often struggle with their own economic and security concerns. We owe these countries our thanks, our support, and our investment,” he said.

Guterres asked the international community to work to re-establish the integrity of the international refugee protection regime so that refugees and host communities receive the support they need.

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic poses an additional threat to refugees and displaced people, who are among the most vulnerable, he noted, adding that refugees and displaced people are also prominent among those who are stepping up to make a difference on the front lines of the response.

“From camps in Bangladesh to hospitals in Europe, refugees are working as nurses, doctors, scientists, teachers and in other essential roles, protecting themselves and giving back to the communities that host them. On World Refugee Day, we thank refugees for their resourcefulness and determination to rebuild their own lives, and to improve the lives of those around them,” he said.

Guterres asked countries to stand in unity and solidarity with refugees and recognize their fundamental obligation to shelter that fleeing war and persecution.

Moderate quake jolts Mizoram

0

A moderate earthquake, with a magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale, shook parts of Mizoram and adjoining Myanmar on Thursday night. There was no report of any damage or casualty yet, officials said.

According to an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the tremor hit eastern Mizoram’s Champhai area, adjoining Myanmar, at 7.29 pm.

The quake, which lasted a few seconds, was at 80 km depth.

Seismologists consider India’s mountainous northeast region as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.

The northeast has seen some of the biggest quakes in history. In 1897, a Shillong-epicentred quake measured 8.2 on the Richter scale, while in 1950, an earthquake in Assam measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale forced the Brahmaputra river to change its course.

Govt orders timely payment of salaries to Covid docs, healthcare workers

0

The Central Government on Thursday directed all the states and Union Territories (UTs) to ensure that salaries of doctors and healthcare workers engaged in Covid-19 related duties are released on time.

The development comes a day after the Supreme Court asked the Centre to issue directions to the states for timely payment of salaries and providing necessary quarantine facilities to doctors and healthcare workers.

The Secretary at the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Preeti Sudan, has asked the chief secretaries of the states and UTs to ensure strict compliance of the order by all the concerned agencies.

“Pursuant to the order of the Supreme Court, it is directed that the states and Union Territories should ensure that the salaries of doctors and healthcare workers engaged in Covid-19 related duties are released on time,” Sudan said.

The Health Ministry further said that violation of the order would be treated as an offense under the Disaster Management Act and the Indian Penal Code.

“Action will be taken against the defaulting hospitals and institutions and authorities,” it added.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan also took to Twitter to announce the directions.

“@MoHFW_INDIA has issued an order directing all States & Union Territories to ensure that salaries of doctors & health workers engaged in #COVID19 related duties MUST be released on time,” he tweeted.

This holds significance as the doctors engaged in treating Covid-19 patients had the time and again raised their voices over not being paid salaries.

Earlier this month, the resident doctors of Kasturba Hospital and Hindu Rao Hospital in Delhi threatened to resign en-masse citing non-payment of salaries for the past three-four months.

Chandrababu seeks Andhra Guv’s intervention to restore rule of law

0

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday urged Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan to stop what he called the destruction of democratic institutions by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government and to restore the rule of law in the state.

The Leader of Opposition called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan and submitted him a memorandum, complaining that Jagan Mohan Reddy government is targeting the main opposition party.

Alleging that the government is pushing the state towards ‘jungle raj’, Naidu said false cases were booked against three ministers in four days. The former Chief Minister provided details of the cases booked against 33 public representatives belonging to the TDP.

The TDP chief alleged that 800 workers of TDP were attacked by the ruling party leaders and workers during the last one year.

Naidu said a false FIR was registered against former minister Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu under the Nirbhaya Act.

“In a matter of four days, the government has filed cases against three former cabinet ministers belonging to the BC community. In all, cases were filed against six TDP leaders and three of them were arrested. This clearly shows the vendetta attitude of the ruling party against the opposition TDP.”

He claimed that the government’s vendetta politics has its roots in 2012 disproportionate assets cases against the present Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Late Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu along with Ashok Gajapati Raju, both TDP leaders, had impleaded in the disproportionate assets case against Jagan Mohan Reddy, based on which the CBI investigation was ordered and subsequently he was jailed for 16 months.

Stating that the Supreme Court and the High Court have been continuously reprimanding or striking down unconstitutional laws and policies, Naidu said the government is trying to subvert and undermine the judicial orders by implementing the same government orders with minor changes.

He alleged that the YSRCP leaders are involved in neck-deep corruption in sand, land, liquor, and mines. “Since the leaders and cadre of the opposition party, TDP, are raising their voice against this, the government in return is attacking them psychologically, financially and physically, apart from threatening them with false cases. As a result, there is strong resentment and opposition among the government,” Naidu said.

The TDP leader said harassment of Dalits, BCs, minorities, and women was rampant. The government has been suppressing dissenting voices in general and particularly targeting weaker and downtrodden sections of the society, he alleged.

Railway Board Chairman inspects Covid isolation coaches at Anand Vihar station

0

Railway Board Chairman V.K. Yadav on Thursday visited Anand Vihar Terminal, where 267 coaches converted to isolation wards for Covid-19 patients are stationed.

Yadav said that Indian Railways has more than 5,200 coaches ready as isolation wards, and the coaches will be given to the state government on demand. The Central government, Ministry of Railways, and the state governments are working in close coordination with each other for this.

He said that Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi has been completely converted into a COVID care center. The 267 coaches placed here are equivalent to over 4,000 beds.

During the visit, he went around the premises and inspected the coaches. He also took stock of the facilities provided in the coaches for housing very mild to mild COVID 19 patients.

Sanitizing and cleaning of platforms, water and electricity with a 100 percent electric backup is available at the station. The top of the coaches are being covered with a canopy and the windows have been provided with mosquito mesh. This will help in cross ventilation of the coaches.

He was apprised about the work being done by Divisional Railway manager S.C. Jain and his team of officers.

The Chairman expressed satisfaction on the efforts made by Northern Railway to serve the society and the nation in these difficult times.

He said that as the cases in the national capital are on a rise, innovative use of Railway assets will help the state government to deal with the cases.

The Railways, which prepared 5,231 isolation ward coaches for coronavirus patients, has deployed 960 isolation coaches in five states, including 503 in the national capital.

Of the remaining, 20 are in Andhra Pradesh, 60 in Telangana, 372 in Uttar Pradesh, and five in Madhya Pradesh.

The coaches provided by the railways will be linked by the state government with a hospital. Ambulances and medical services will be provided by the state government. Railways have set up a control room which will be manned 24×7.

The Railway Board Chairman also added that the coaches will work as an extension of a hospital, and this way it will be easier for admission and monitoring of the patients. Very mild to mild cases will be kept here.

Oxygen cylinders have been provided by Railways in case the need arises. He also said that the Indian Railways will always be at the forefront to help the government and the people of India overcome this global pandemic.

How do I find the best live dealer online casino?

0

Whether it’s roulette, blackjack or any other similar game, there’s nothing like sitting down at the table and enjoying the gaming experience. With a drink in your hand, you’re able to socialize with your neighbours and talk not just about the game at hand, but also about common interests. The dealer is friendly and engaging, making small talk, and helping everyone at the table enjoy the gaming session.

But what if you just can’t visit a land-based casino? Try your hand at a live dealer online casino.

It is a common misconception that online gaming can’t possibly substitute for the in-person experience — especially for table games. If you haven’t ventured into new online casinos featuring live dealers, now’s the time to give it a try.

What’s a live dealer game like?

At a live dealer online casino, most of your favourite parts of the in-person experience can be replicated. Take a look below at some of the key features of the best live dealer casinos.

  • A real person (live via video feed) shuffles and deals cards, or spins the wheel
  • The pace of the game matches that of a table game at a land-based casino — no synchronous computer betting or quick wheel spins here
  • You’re joined (virtually) by other players, getting a chance to socialize at your table

However, while looking for live dealer casinos, you must keep a few important things in mind. Here are some of them.

What’s most important to verify?

Whether you’re looking for a real casino online in India or anywhere else, it’s critical that you keep an eye on important features that keep you safe as well as offer a fun experience.

Online safety

Any time you’re giving out personal information online, you should be aware of the security of your information and the quality of the systems holding your data. Check for secure live casino options on an authentic casino gaming review site. Make sure that the casino you choose offers the ultimate protection in their software and encryption techniques to keep your transactions safe.

Quality support teams

Even with the best systems, errors can happen — and when they do, you want to be sure you’ll be able to get a hold of someone quickly to resolve the problem. Make sure to take your gaming business to a company that’s going to help you without creating even more of a hassle.

Fair payouts

Online casinos are regularly reviewed to ensure their payouts are given as advertised. Additionally, make sure that you’ve clearly understood any restrictions the online casino may place on your play at a table.

What else should you consider?

While online safety and an error-free experience are perhaps the most important criteria to consider when finding a live dealer site, there are other factors that can make your gaming time much more fun and enjoyable.

Game variety

When online casinos employ live dealers to conduct games, they may not be able to offer the variety that you’re used to seeing in purely online environments. Be sure that the site you visit offers the type of game you’re most interested in playing.

Betting structure

Just as it is in the land-based casino world, there are often different betting levels at various gaming tables. While any betting rules within each game tend to stay the same, the opening bets can range from entry-level to high-stakes. Check out more about the site you plan to visit to learn about limits and options.

Game appearance

Don’t discount how things look and sound! If you’re used to a loud environment with slot machines ringing around you, then experiment with various live dealer sites to find one that adds that kind of background noise. It will help you feel even more like you’re right there at the table!

Accessibility

Where are you planning to play? Are you going to sit in your comfortable computer chair with a snack and drink nearby? Or are you planning to take your phone or tablet to the park so you can enjoy gaming while out in the sun? Whatever be your plan, you need to find a gaming site that will support the technology on your phone.

Special offers

When you hit the tables at a land-based casino, one of the first things you’ll be asked for is your player’s card, so you can start racking up bonuses and exclusive deals. You don’t have to give this up just because you’re moving to a live dealer gaming table! Find out more about gaming site bonuses before getting started, so you can take advantage of every available offer right from the start.

If you’re ready to find the best live dealer casinos, check out all the great options at authentic casino gaming review portals.

No soldiers missing in action, says Indian Army

0

The Indian Army on Thursday said that there are no soldiers “missing in action” following a violent clash with troops of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army at Galway Valley in eastern Ladakh.

There were reports that 10 Indian soldiers were missing from Monday night onwards after the clash in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. The Chinese too suffered a few casualties, but the numbers are said to be in single digits.

The Indian Army troops who were attacked and suffered fatal casualties on Monday night were carrying weapons, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified. However, they did not fire on their adversaries.

In the meantime, the Major General-level dialogue is taking place at the site of the attack at patrolling point 14 in Galway valley on Thursday to ease out the tense situation.

On Wednesday also, top Indian and Chinese military commanders talked at Galway Valley over the violent clash along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh but the three-hour dialogue remained inconclusive at the end of the day.

The clash, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed, occurred at the south bank of Galway river, which flows in an east-west direction before its confluence with the Shyok river.

The dialogue was to ensure that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army pulls back all its troops from the Galway Valley and removed all the military-grade tents which house them.

Both the forces have redeployed troops at the site of the clash. Sources said that India Army officials have made clear to Chinese counterparts that they have to move back.

Major Gen. Abhijit Bapat, who is the Commander of the Indian Army’s 3 Division, raised several points with the Chinese officers with regards to the incident on the intervening night of June 15/16.

These were the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in a clash with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sources said Indian Army troops were outnumbered five times when they came under attack from the Chinese soldiers at patrolling point number 14 on the LAC.

China’s PLA “savagely attacked” the Indian Army personnel, according to sources in the government with knowledge of the details of the Monday night clashes between the two armies.

“The numbers were stacked up against the Indian Army troops. Yet, the Indian side decided to fight the PLA. The Indian soldiers were outnumbered 1:5 by the Chinese troopers,” a source said on Wednesday.

China is also said to have used thermal imaging drones to trace the Indian soldiers scattered on the treacherous terrain before brutally attacking them.

“It was the deadliest attack carried on Indian Army personnel by Chinese military personnel in our memory,” the government source said.

“We were outnumbered,” admitted an Indian Army officer, about the clash that went on for six to seven hours.

Indian Army said that its soldiers went to the spot where the clashes happened without any animosity and were displaying friendly gestures to the Chinese side as they sought to check if the de-escalation agreement was being followed as promised.

Several Indian Army soldiers are currently “critically injured” and are undergoing treatment. The fatality numbers could increase” as the current critically injured personnel numbers are more than 10, the sources said.

Social distancing norms go for a toss in Delhi markets

Amid massive spurt in Covid-19 cases in the national capital, people and traders can be seen openly flouting social distancing norms in the market area.

Crowded markets in Delhi are made up of narrow and congested lanes, which makes it hard for shopkeepers and traders to adhere to social distancing norms.

The cramped structure of Gaffar Market in Karol Bagh with its plethora of electronic shops is a place where social distancing is a must but maintaining a minimum distance of six feet is difficult.

This comes as a warning at a time the number of Covid-19 cases is inching towards the 50,000 marks. Delhi is expected to report over 5.5 lakh cases by the end of July. This, along with an over-strained healthcare infrastructure, will prove to be a hurdle in curbing the spread of disease.

Ravi Solanki, Associate Member of Gaffar Market, told IANS that people coming to the markets are openly flouting the norms by not wearing masks and crowding the space.

“We are trying to protect ourselves by hanging a protective screen outside the shops. The market is crowded which makes it harder for us to stop each and every customer from venturing out carelessly,” Solanki rued.

Vice President of the Market, Hunny Handa asserted that since the customers cannot be controlled, guards have been deployed to apprise them about wearing masks and maintaining distance.

“We have directed shopkeepers not to attend to anyone who does not wear a mask, as a way to spread the message that wearing it is important,” he said.

Not only the Gaffar Market, Mori Gate, which has Asia’s largest motor market, is also witnessing the same fate pursuant to re-opening of shops over ten days ago.

Speaking to IANS, Chandra Bhushan Gupta, Chairperson of Bhola Ram Market in Mori Gate, said that he fears to contract the deadly virus as at least 800 people are always present in the cramped market, hence crowing it.

“Social distancing norms have gone for a toss and no one wears masks. Due to the crowding and fear for their life, some people have even shut up their shops. We have complained to Delhi Lt Gov Anil Baijal regarding this but no action has been taken so far,” said Gupta.

He added that if anything happens, the motor market will be sealed and businesses will face the wrath. “The Station House Officer of the area has time and again given a warning but no one pays to heed.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had, last month, warned that if social distancing norms are not maintained by a shopkeeper, his or her shop will be closed and action will be taken.

Recently, the Confederation of All India Traders contended that adopting an odd-even scheme to open shops or restrict the number of days a market operates would be considered. It will, however, depend upon the trajectory and severity of the disease in the city, they said.

Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt have lost followers on their social media accounts

Filmmaker Karan Johar appears to have unfollowed several Twitter accounts, among them nearly all the celebrity accounts that we are pretty sure he used to follow. These include his close friends Alia Bhatt and Twinkle Khanna. Mr Johar, currently weathering a veritable tsunami of controversy, now follows just eight Twitter accounts. Of these, only three belong to actors – Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Twinkle’s husband Akshay Kumar. A fourth account is that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the remaining four belong to Mr

Karan Johar’s sudden paring down of his Twitter friends list is not apropos of nothing – since Sunday, he has faced massive and brutal backlash after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, whose last film Drive was produced by Mr Johar. The filmmaker has been accused of hypocrisy, after writing of how he blamed himself for not having been in touch with the actor, who police say died by suicide; Mr Johar and actress Alia Bhatt spoke dismissively of Sushant Singh Rajput on an episode of chat show Koffee With Karan, Twitter has pointed out. The public excoriation has also been based on rumours that Karan Johar and other powerful Bollywood figures boycotted Mr Rajput – politician Sanjay Nirupam has alleged that the actor lost seven films that he had signed after the success of his 2019 hit Chhichhore.

Quite what point Karan Johar is making by unfollowing his celebrity friends escapes us for the moment; it’s noteworthy that the three celebrities he does follow still were not born into film dynasties. Of the three, Mr Johar is famously very close to Shah Rukh Khan both personally and professionally; Amitabh Bachchan is, of course, is the elder statesman of the film industry; Akshay Kumar is connected to Mr Johar through his wife Twinkle Khanna, daughter of Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna and a childhood friend of Karan Johar. Alia Bhatt is also what is known as ‘star kids’ as is Mr Johar himself. Both Twinkle Khanna and Alia Bhatt are still following Karan Johar.

Both Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt have also reportedly lost followers on their social media accounts after being reminded of their Koffee With Karan conversation. An excerpt from actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s book in which he relates how Dharma Productions stonewalled him over an audition has gone viral recently. In it, Mr Khurrana writes that he was told, “We only work with stars.”

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death is being investigated as a suicide; the Maharashtra government has announced that allegations he was depressed because of professional rivalry will also be probed.
