“I really can’t wait to return to the US Open 2020” : Serena Williams

0

Serena Williams committed to play at this year’s US Open on Wednesday as US Tennis Association officials vowed they can safely stage the first Grand Slam since the coronavirus pandemic shutdown. With top men’s stars questioning the wisdom of staging the event, the USTA said the tournament will be held August 31 to September 13 without spectators at New York’s National Tennis Center, which in April became a temporary hospital facility to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

“I really can’t wait to return to the US Open 2020,” Serena Williams said in a video message. “I think the USTA is going to do a really good job of ensuring everyone is going to be safe.

“This is crazy. I’m excited.”The Flushing Meadows fortnight will be the first Grand Slam event staged since the deadly virus outbreak shut down global sport. Wimbledon was cancelled and the French Open was postponed until September.

The site will also host the ATP/WTA Western and Southern Open, typically staged in Cincinnati, the week before the US Open with a similar safety “bubble” that includes testing for players and their entourage.

The USTA expects an 80% drop in net operating income as a result of having no spectators for the US Open but will provide $60 million in prize money for the two events in New York combined plus another $3.3 million each to the ATP and WTA.

“We have the resources we can do this for a one-off year,” USTA chief executive officer Mike Dowse said.Novak Djokovic has been among several top players critical of the idea of staging the US Open as scheduled given the severe US impact of COVID-19, although cases in the New York area have been declining for several weeks.

Niharika post on her social media account that puzzled the followers

0

There were a lot of rumors that Niharika was in love with a young co-star and months later she is rumored to be marrying Prabhas and after it got ruled out, Sai Dharam Tej’s name too popped up. While Niharika is trying to focus on films, her father Naga Babu recently said he will soon find a good match for her to get married.

Surprisingly, Niharika posted something on her social media account that puzzled the followers. Holding a Starbucks coffee cup with ‘Mrs. Niha’ written on it while ‘Ms’ is struck off. Niharika too left it the way cryptic it is with ‘Uh.. what?’ to quote the picture.

Well, it looks like either Niharika’s marriage is fixed for real, or she just started promoting her new film or a short film that has a marriage concept. That seems to be suspense for now.

“I still remember all the lovely days when I represented my country” : Sreesanth

0

As the seven-year ban inches closer to an end, fast bowler S Sreesanth on Thursday said he was fit and raring to play cricket again. Sreesanth was banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for lifetime in August 2013, along with his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, for indulging in alleged spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that year. However, last year his lifetime ban was reduced to seven years, which is set to complete on September 13 this year.

Sreesanth says he is certain of getting into the Kerala Ranji Trophy team but is waiting for the official announcement.”The official announcement will come in September, I am just continuing with my training. Everybody is being supportive from the Secretary to Director General, everybody has been supportive, selectors and coach want me in the team,” Sreesanth told ANI.

“I am just training, let’s see, I am fit and raring to go. You will see me playing, I am just eagerly waiting to go forward. It’s very, very clear I will be in the squad, the official announcement will be in September so I have to follow the rules and do things accordingly,” he added.

The 37-year-old pacer admitted that cricket has changed a lot since the last time he played.”I don’t look at this as one of my second innings, seven years I have missed and cricket has changed a lot from the last time when I was playing. I still remember all the lovely days when I represented my country,” he said.

The most debated change in the game of cricket has been the prohibition of saliva to shine the ball. The concerns regarding the spread of coronavirus forced the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make interim changes to playing regulations.

“It’s being blown out of proportion, you can use sweat as well, you have to take care, you have to respect every decision the association is taking, it all comes down to skills. When I played county cricket, I learned that you just have to maintain the ball, it’s more of keeping the ball dry,” Sreesanth said.

“I am very happy in one way, there is a positive that only the skilful bowlers can now perform. You need to move on and adapt, you have to adapt if you want to become successful, the need of the hour is to adapt. It’s about practice, and players will eventually get used to it,” he added.

Ravichandran Ashwin about Virat Kohli

0

Ravichandran Ashwin has starred for India on many occasions with the red ball. Recently in an interview, the Indian off-spinner recalled an incident from a 2017 Test match against Australia in Bangalore. Ravichandran Ashwin was moved by the gesture of captain Virat Kohli after he told him about his plan to dismiss Australia batsman David Warner.

“Virat was playing PlayStation with Saha and I went to his room and said, ‘Virat, I think what’s happening is Nathan Lyon got wickets in the first innings and the wicket was damp so somehow there is this sense of people coming in and saying that Lyon got wickets and hence Ash should get wickets and we’ll roll them over,” Ravichandran Ashwin told cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle in a show for Cricbuzz.

“But I want to be in my own cocoon, where I can take this game forward the way I want. I think I want to go over the wicket to David Warner even if it sounds defensive. We need to put this game on pause mode, literally pause this game without Australia wresting the initiative. And I think both Warner and Renshaw have practised a lot of balls for off-spinners coming from round the stumps. So I want to change this game,” Ashwin added.

After explaining his idea to trouble the Australian opener, Ashwin saw Kohli going back to play his game before expressing the word of “faith” for the off-spinner.

“He listened to my idea for a minute, started playing the game and said, ‘Do what you want, I have complete belief in you.’ And the next day I started bowling over the stumps,” Ashwin said.

“How David Warner got out in the first innings in Bangalore, where he got bowled – I moved over the stumps and started hitting the rough and he got bowled,” he explained.

Earlier, Kohli was doing an Instagram live session with spinner Ashwin and it was then that the Indian skipper was asked whether he sees the game-changing a lot when it resumes.

“Game-changing a lot? Man I do not know what is going to happen, it is so strange thinking even of practice sessions like instinctively you want to clap/hi-five, but you cannot do that, you will meet people after a long time, and you would have to fold hands and stay away,” Kohli told Ashwin during the interaction.

“I know it sounds strange, it might be a permanent feature until there is some sort of cure or vaccine that comes out, we will need to make that a part of our routine,” he added.

0

Sushant Singh Rajput’s sister Shweta Singh Kirti, who recently flew into India from the US, where she lives, poured her heart out in her send-off note for Sushant, which, however, she deleted from her unverified Facebook account within a day. Sorry mera sona… sorry for all the pain you had to go through. If I could, I would have taken all your pain and given all my happiness to you.” As part of the investigation over Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic death, the police will also probe allegations that the actor was depressed because of professional rivalry. The actor allegedly lost six of his seven films, which he had signed after his 2019 film Chhichhore.

Shweta’s eulogy for Sushant continued with words, which will tug at your heartstrings: “Your twinkling eyes taught the world how to dream, your innocent smile revealed the true purity of your heart. You will always be loved, mera baby and so so much more. Wherever you are, mera baby, stay happy, stay fulfilled and know that everyone loved you, loves you and will always love you unconditionally.”

Shweta had also attached a note on compassion, kindness and forgiveness in her post, writing: “All my dear ones. I know it is testing times but whenever there is choice, choose love above hatred, choose kindness and compassion above anger and resentment, choose selflessness above selfishness and forgive, forgive yourself, forgive others and forgive everyone. Everybody is fighting their own battles. Be compassionate to yourself and be compassionate to others and everyone. Let not your heart close ever, at any cost!”

Earlier, Shweta Singh Kirti had revealed how her five-year-old son consoled her after Sushant’s death: “When I told Nirvanh the news that mamu is no more, he said ‘But he is alive in your heart’.”

On Thursday morning, Shweta said that the family will immerse Sushant Singh Rajput’s ashes later today. A day after Sushant’s death, the actor’s father, along with other members of the family, travelled from Patna to Mumbai to perform the actor’s last rites. China asks India not to underestimate its will

0

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned China against aggression, Beijing asked New Delhi not to “misjudge” the situation or “underestimate” its will. China even went a step further alleging India of breaking consensus and “deliberately provoking”.

Even as China’s President Xi Jinping has remained tight-lipped about the escalation of tensions between India and China, especially after the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in a violent stand-off between the two sides at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, Beijing’s spokesperson took to social media to respond to India’s warning.

In a couple of tweets, Foreign Ministry spokesperson of China, Hua Chunying said, “India must not misjudge the current situation or underestimate China’s firm will to safeguard its territorial sovereignty.”

China has been laying claim over Galway valley in the union territory of Ladakh.

Hua also repeated that “Indian front-line broke the consensus and crossed the Line of Actual Control, deliberately provoking and attacking Chinese officers and soldiers, thus triggering fierce physical conflicts and causing casualties”.

The statement on Twitter came while Indian and Chinese militaries are holding talks about the confrontation in Ladakh.

India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar in a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart on Wednesday had asked China to “reassess its actions and take corrective steps” in view of the “unprecedented” violence along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Jaishankar had also accused China of taking “premeditated and planned action that was directly responsible for the resulting violence and casualties”.

The ban was later extended to June 15.

After extending the prohibition several times since Bangladesh resumed flights on domestic routes on June 1 and continued flights to and from China only as CAAB extended suspension on all other international flights until June 15.

Hong Kong Disneyland reopens after 6 months

0

Hong Kong Disneyland reopened on Thursday after being closed for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and became the world’s second Disney park to resume activities following Shanghai.

The park was closed since the last week of January, its hotels however have been open throughout and some of its restaurants resumed operation in May, reports Efe news.

The park reopened with a limited number of people, only those with prior reservations, and with safety measures, including social distancing, compulsory use of masks along with temperature check for visitors and employees.

Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Stephanie Young said that the park would implement the local government and health authorities’ new and improved prevention measures.

Young said: “I am grateful for the support of this incredible community, the commitment of our medical staff and the dedication of all of our Cast Members who have all managed through this challenging time and I am optimistic that we have a bright future ahead.

“The health and safety of our guests and cast continue to be at the forefront of our mind and our Cast Members have been working diligently to make sure all the necessary measures are in place for guests to enjoy a magical visit.”

The one-day entry ticket, priced at $80 dollars per person was sold out in few hours.

Hong Kong Disneyland, just like Shanghai, closed on January 25, two days after China sealed off Wuhan and put millions of people in isolation to contain the spread of the virus.

The Tokyo branch of the park shut in February while those in Europe and the US closed in March.

Apart from Hong Kong Disneyland, the city has also allowed reopening of other theme parks such as Ocean Park.

The entry of the park has already been sold out for the first few weekends.

Friday onwards, the Hong Kong government will ease restrictions put on bars, restaurants, and night clubs and is set to allow public gatherings of up to 50 people.

Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan on Tuesday announced the next round of easing of restrictions put in place to fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, with an aim to resuming social and economic activity in the city.

Hong Kong health authorities on Thursday reported eight new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of infections so far to 1,120, with four deaths.

Kramnik feels becoming world champion was beuond expectation

0

Vladimir Kramnik has been one of the greatest chess players in the world. Having achieved the Grandmaster norms in 1992, he became the youngest world number one in January 1996 and held the record for 14 years until Magnus Carlsen took the spot in January 2010.
Kramnik was also hailed for helping unify the chess world when he faced Veselin Topalov in the World Chess Championship 2006. He defeated Topalov to become the undisputed World Champion.

After announcing his professional retirement in January 2019, he shifted his focus to development projects particularly related to chess education for children.

International Master and Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev recently got Kramnik into an exclusive chat to ask him about his career and his mental approach to the game for an episode of the Mind Behind series.

The Mind Behind is a cross-discipline series about the lives and careers of professionals across multiple streams. The series developed by Red Bull Media House features actors, chefs, comedians, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, sports personalities, and many others, as part of exclusive one-on-one interviews.

Kramnik beat chess legend Garry Kasparov in 2000 to become the Classical World Champion. In 2006, he beat Veselin Topalov to become the undisputed World Champion. He boasts three gold medals and three individual medals at Chess Olympiads. He is also tied-eight with Viswanathan Anand for all-time best chess ratings at 2817.

Yet, when he looks back at his successful career, he thinks it was better than he expected because he did not think he had the talent to be the best. Kramnik says that he would have been happy being an average Grandmaster and that his world champion achievement was beyond expectations.

While Kramnik has been part of some interesting world championship matches against the likes of Garry Kasparov, Peter Leko, Veselin Topalov, and Viswanathan Anand, he most enjoyed watching Kasparov versus Anatoly Karpov in 1984. Kramnik was 12 years old when this match was started and intently studying to become a professional chess player. The world championship match started in 1984 as a first-to-six-wins format but was abandoned without result.

It was restarted as a best-of-24 match in 1985 and eventually won by Kasparov. Kramnik says he remembers the first match of 1984 as his favorite because he traveled to Moscow to watch it in the Hall of Columns — the first time he traveled out of his region — and was very impressed by the grandeur of the occasion. It steeled his resolve to become a professional chess player.

Launching the auction of coal mines for commercial mining, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the coal sector has finally been pulled out of decades in lockdown and liberated.

Noting that India having the fourth largest coal reserves in the world was importing coal so far, he said that the move will make India self-reliant in terms of coal and also create lakhs of job opportunities.

Modi said the opening up of commercial coal mining will help people of Eastern and Central India in terms of jobs and prosperity.

The decision to open up commercial coal mining for private players was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat package last month.

“Today, we are not just launching the auction of commercial coal mining but are also pulling the coal sector out of years in lockdown,” Modi said during the video address during the launch program.

He also said that the Centre aims to gasify 100 million tonne coal by 2030 and with an investment of Rs 200 billion.

The Prime Minister noted that without a strong mining and mineral sector self-reliance of a country is not possible. He added that the opening up of commercial mining will create new resources and new markets for companies, more revenues for the states will get more revenue and more employment opportunities for people living near the coal mines.

Talking of the environmental concerns he said that it has been taken care of that India’s commitment towards the environment is not compromised while reforming the coal sector and the objective of gasification of coal is in that direction. the rate in Australia reached 7.1 percent in May and stood at the worst level in more than 15 years, which is heading for its first recession in almost three decades due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to official data published on Thursday.

Unemployment figures have increased markedly since March, when Australia closed its borders and ordered the closure of nonessential businesses to curb the spread of the virus, which has infected 7,370 people in the country, with 102 deaths, reports Efe news

He said that about “2.3 million people, around 1 in 5 employed people, were affected by either job loss between April and May or had fewer hours than usual for economic reasons in May”.

Responding to the figures, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that “these are dark times” and stressed that his government “will not rest and will work on the biggest economic challenges the country has seen”.

The government has committed aid funds of up to A$259 billion ($178 billion), equivalent to 13.3 percent of its GDP.

Why soldiers were sent unarmed to martyrdom: Rahul

0

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi once again hit out at the Narendra Modi government over the killing of 20 Indian soldiers by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in an unprecedented attack in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley and asked why soldiers were sent “unarmed” to martyrdom.

“How dare China kill our unarmed soldiers? Why were our soldiers sent unarmed to martyrdom?” Rahul Gandhi asked the government in a tweet on Thursday.

His remarks came a day after he questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the killing of Indian soldiers in Galwan Valley on Monday night.

On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi in a tweet said, “Why is the Prime Minister silent? Why is he hiding? Enough is enough. We need to know what has happened. How dare China kill our soldiers? How dare they take our land?”

Later in the day, he also took a jibe at Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for taking two days to condole the death of 20 Indian soldiers, including an officer, in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley.

“If it was so painful, why insult Indian Army by not naming China in your tweet? Why take two days to condole? Why address rallies as soldiers were being martyred? Why hide and get the Army blamed by the crony media? Why make paid-media blame Army instead of government of India?” Rahul said in a tweet on Wednesday.

The fresh salvo from the Congress leader came after Rajnath Singh on Wednesday afternoon condoled the death of 20 Indian soldiers, including an officer.

The Defence Minister in a tweet said, “The loss of soldiers in Galwan is deeply disturbing and painful. Our soldiers displayed exemplary courage and valour in the line of duty and sacrificed their lives in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.”

Rajnath Singh had addressed a virtual BJP rally as part of ‘Jan Samvad’ on Sunday and Monday in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand respectively.

At least 20 Indian soldiers, including an officer, were killed in an unprecedented violent clash with Chinese PLA troops at Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night.
