19 members of Telangana family test positive for Covid-19

As many as 19 members of a family in Telangana’s Zaheerabad town have tested positive for Covid-19, officials said on Saturday.

According to the health department officials, all of them are relatives of a 55-year-old woman, who had died at a private hospital in Hyderabad on June 9.

Her body was brought to Zaheerabad and was buried the same day. The next day, the hospital authorities informed her family members that the samples collected before her death have tested positive for Covid-19.

The health department and municipal officials went on alert and shifted the deceased’s family members and relatives to an isolation center. They collected samples of 25 people and of them, 19 returned positive. They include women and children. The results were known late on Friday.

The officials shifted all those who tested positive to the district hospital in Sangareddy. The area where the woman’s house is located has been declared a containment zone.

District officials said that efforts were being made to trace all those who had attended the woman’s last rites.

Meanwhile, Greater Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan on Saturday tested negative for Covid-19. He had undergone the test on Friday after his driver had tested positive.

The driver was found positive after tests were conducted on employees working in the mayor’s chambers in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) office after an employee had tested positive.

Since the driver had accompanied him during his visit to various parts of the city, Rammohan went into quarantine and also underwent the test.

This was the second time in less than a week that the mayor has undergone the Covid-19 test. Earlier, he had given his samples for the test on June 7 and the result returned negative.

Rammohan had voluntarily come forward to undergo the test after a worker at a hotel, where he had tea on June 1, had tested positive.

After participating in a sanitation programme, the mayor had tea at a hotel in Adikmet. It was later found that a worker at the hotel had tested positive.

The mayor said the worker had left the hotel nine days before he had tea there and though the chances of catching Covid-19 were ruled out, he was still going for a test as a precautionary measure.

Messi poses in mask with Barca teammates en route to Mallorca

0

Barcelona faces Mallorca as LaLiga returns on Saturday and club captain Lionel Messi posted a photo with his teammates en route to the island. The players can be seen standing away from each other on the bus in accordance with social distancing norms and are wearing protective gear.

Messi can be seen in the image with fellow forwards Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann, midfielder Arturo Vidal and defenders Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique.

The enforced lay-off due to the coronavirus has allowed Suarez to recover from the knee operation he had in January, while Griezmann commented earlier in the week that the break had granted him the physical and mental rest he hadn’t been able to enjoy in the last five years.

The problems for Barca coach Quique Setien are the suspension to central defender Clement Lenglet, which is carried over from Barca’s last game before the lay-off, and a question over Samuel Umtiti, who would be his natural replacement in central defense.

Winger Ousmane Dembele is still missing while youngster Ansu Fati has worked in the gym because of injury and probably won’t travel.

Nelson Semedo will be able to form part of the expedition to Mallorca after testing negative for COVID-19 after being filmed breaking lockdown protocols at a birthday celebration earlier in the week.

Messi will start, although with games every three days, Setien will be anxious to protect his star player, who did suffer some muscle problems a few days ago, while Suarez will probably be eased back into action.

Smartphone-based AI tool can help manage type 1 diabetes

0

Using artificial intelligence (AI) and automated monitoring, the researchers have designed a smartphone-based method to help people with type 1 diabetes better manage their glucose levels.

Paired with a smartphone app called DailyDose, the recommendations from the algorithm were shown to be in agreement with physicians 67.9 percent of the time.

“Our system design is unique. We designed the AI algorithm entirely using a mathematical simulator,” study researcher Nichole Tyler from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in the US, said in a paper published in the journal Nature Metabolism.

“When the algorithm was validated on real-world data from people with type 1 diabetes at OHSU, it generated recommendations that were highly similar to recommendations from endocrinologists,” Tyler added.

That’s significant because the people with diabetes typically go three to six months between appointments with their endocrinologist.

According to the researchers, people with type 1 diabetes do not produce their own insulin, so they must take it continuously throughout the day using an insulin pump or through multiple daily injections.

The algorithm developed by the research team used data collected from a continuous glucose monitor and wireless insulin pens to provide guidance on adjustments.

The new study involved monitoring 16 people with type 1 diabetes over the course of four weeks, showing that the model can help reduce hypoglycemia or low glucose.

If left untreated, hypoglycemia can cause coma or death.

“Very few algorithms have shown a statistically relevant outcome – and most do not compare algorithm recommendations with those of a physician,” said study researcher Peter Jacob.

“In addition to showing improvement in glucose control, our algorithm-generated recommendations that had a very high correlation with physician recommendations with over 99 percent of the algorithm’s recommendations delivered across 100 weeks of patient testing considered safe by physicians,” Jacob added.

In what could likely be a case of Tamil Nadu’s oldest survivor of COVID-19, a 97-year-old man with comorbidities made a remarkable recovery from the virus at a private hospital in Chennai. Doctors and other health workers clapped and cheered for the senior citizen as he exited the hospital.

The man was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on May 30 after testing positive for COVID-19. He complained of fever, cough, and breathlessness, the hospital said in a statement. He also had comorbid conditions such as hypertension and heart disease.

Dr. Vijayalakshmi Balakrishnan, the Senior Infectious Diseases Specialist at Kauvery Hospital, said: “Slowly, he recovered. After five to six days he became much better walking around and talking to us. When he went home, we all had a good feeling.”COVID is not the end of life. There is always a chance. We can win the war and live healthily,” she added.

Chennai, the coronavirus epicenter of Tamil Nadu, has 14,723 active cases. The city’s total tally accounts for 71 percent of the state’s numbers. A majority of cases are being treated in government hospitals and government-run Corona Care Centres amid reports of a shortage of beds, which the government denies. Presently the state has a 52 percent recovery rate and 0.9 percent mortality rate.

The state government has fixed a cap on fees chargeable by private hospitals. For asymptomatic and mild cases, it’s Rs 5,000 per day, a maximum of Rs 9,000 for severe cases, and Rs 15,000 if admitted to the ICU. The state government has also included COVID-19 treatment by private hospitals under the state government’s health insurance plan to benefit those below the poverty line.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi on Saturday revealed that he has tested positive for coronavirus. Afridi, who represented Pakistan in 27 Tests, 398 One-day Internationals (ODIs), and 99 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), took to Twitter to break the news, saying that he had been feeling unwell since Thursday and after getting tested for coronavirus, his results returned positive.

I’ve been feeling unwell since Thursday; my body had been aching badly. I’ve been tested and unfortunately, I’m COVID positive. Need prayers for a speedy recovery, InshaAllah

Last month, Shahid Afridi had stepped in to buy a bat owned by Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim after a charity auction for coronavirus victims was derailed by fake bids.

Mushfiqur put the bat he used to score Bangladesh’s first Test double hundred in 2013 against Sri Lanka up for the highest bidder online this week. But organizers called off the auction as fake offers sent the price soaring over USD 50,000, Mushfiqur said.

“Afridi contacted me personally and I sent him a link of the bid,” the Bangladesh cricketer said in an online forum.”On May 13 he sent me a letter and offered USD 20,000. He bought my bat with this money. I am really privileged,” he said. In a career spanning over 20 years, Afridi represented Pakistan in 27 Tests, 398 One-day Internationals (ODIs), and 99 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

He scored 8,064 runs in ODIs, 1,716 runs in Tests, and 1,416 in the shortest format of the game. During the fag end of his career, Afridi impressed more with his bowling skills than his batting skills. He finished with 395 wickets to his name in the 50-over format in addition to taking 48 and 98 wickets in Tests and T20Is respectively.

With the lockdown delaying her Nishabdham’s release indefinitely, Anushka is already busy planning her next projects. As per a source in the know, Anushka is all set to reunite with UV Creations, the banner that bankrolled some of Anushka’s biggest hits, including Mirchi and Bhaagamathie.

Apparently, Anushka’s next project is a lady oriented film and it will be made in the romantic entertainer genre. P Mahesh, who had directed Sundeep Kishan’s 2014 action entertainer ‘Ra Ra Krishnayya’, will be directing Anushka in his second film.

The film’s pre-production is underway already and more details about the project will be revealed at an appropriate time after Tollywood limps back to normalcy. But what’s interesting is that, despite her super stardom, Anushka continues to choose content-oriented movies instead of going for films with star directors.

Parents killed their Pregnent Daughter

A 20-year-old college student was allegedly strangled by her parents in sleep because she refused to terminate her pregnancy, police said. The victim had entered into a relationship with a man who her parents didn’t approve of as he is from another caste.

The victim was a first-year student at a college in Kurnool, where she had developed a relationship with the man. She had returned home to the Jogulamba-Gadwal district of Telangana during the lockdown.

She was taken to a hospital by her parents after she missed her period. She was found to be 13-weeks pregnant. Despite her parents’ pressure, she refused to abort the child. The police suspect that the parents smothered their daughter in the early hours of Sunday while their two other daughters slept in an adjoining room. They later tried to pass it off as sudden natural death due to a heart attack.

Some villagers however doubted her parents’ version as the body was completely covered but they had seen marks on her neck. When a police team went to their house and insisted on a post-mortem after noticing some marks on her body indicating a struggle, the parents tried to stall, saying there was no need.

The police also questioned the father of the victim in front of the village head. Police said they have admitted to killing their daughter. The couple has been arrested and charged with murder. The post-mortem examination has confirmed death due to throttling.

“what would have been my career if I was in your shoes?” Ines Ibbou,

0

Ines Ibbou, a young Algerian tennis player who hit back at Dominic Thiem for saying he did not want to give money to lowly-ranked players, has drawn support from Venus Williams as well as her country’s government. “Dear Dominic,” Ibbou, who is 620th in the WTA singles rankings, said in an emotional nine-minute video posted on social media.

“what would have been my career if I was in your shoes?” In April, Thiem, an Austrian ranked third in the men’s game, said he was not happy with a plan supported by Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal for top players to help those lower down the rankings who had lost their tournament income because of the coronavirus shutdown of tennis.

“None of them are going to starve,” Thiem told an Austrian newspaper, explaining that “many, many” of those players had not made it to the top because they “don’t put the sport above everything else”.

“I wouldn’t really see why I should give such players money,” he went on. “I would rather give money to people or organisations that really need it.”In her response, the 21-year-old Ibbou said life was tough for an African tennis player.”You know that in a country like mine it’s not easy for a woman to be a high-level athlete.”

She said that Thiem grew up in a “magical world” and while both his parents were tennis coaches, “I grew up in a very modest family with parents who had nothing to do with tennis.”

“We don’t choose where we are born,” she said, adding that she loved her parents and regretted that her endless travelling to tournaments meant she saw them so little.

“I cherish the day when I’ll be able to afford a gift for my parents,” said Ibbou, who has made $27,825  on the WTA Tour and had earned $3,135 this season before play was halted.

She said that, unlike Thiem, she could not afford a coach or entourage and always had to worry about her budget and, as an Algerian, a visa.

Indian Cricket Team will not travel to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe

0

The Indian team’s August tour of Zimbabwe was on Friday called off by the BCCI owing to the COVID-19 threat, which hasn’t allowed national cricketers to even resume training. The development comes a day after Sri Lanka Cricket announced that India’s limited overs tour in June-July was postponed indefinitely. “…the Indian Cricket Team will not travel to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe owing to the current threat of COVID-19,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

“Team India was originally scheduled to travel to the island nation from 24th June 2020 for three ODIs and as many T20Is and to Zimbabwe for a series comprising three ODIs starting 22nd August 2020,” Shah said.

India has reported close to three lakh coronavirus cases with over 8500 deaths. The Indian team is yet to resume training and the camp is unlikely to take place before July.

The players will take around six weeks to be match ready, according to the side’s support staff. Shah, in the release, reiterated the board’s stance that it will organise a training camp only when it is deemed safe by the government.

“…the BCCI will conduct a camp for its contracted players only when it is completely safe to train outdoors.

“The BCCI is determined to take steps towards the resumption of international and domestic cricket, but it will not rush into any decision that will jeopardize the efforts put in by the Central and State governments and several other respective agencies in containing the spread of the coronavirus.”

He also said that the BCCI is constantly monitoring the COVID-19 situation in the country and will take a call on resumption of cricketing activities after considering all the government guidelines.”The Office-Bearers have been taking note of advisories issued by the Government of India and the Board is committed to fully comply with the restrictions imposed and guidelines issued.

“The BCCI will continue to study and evaluate the changing situation,” Shah added. The Indian team was last seen in action in the home ODI series against South Africa, which was postponed after the first match amid the rising coronavirus threat. Even the first match of that series could not take place due to rain.

Delhi has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in India

0

Coronavirus patients are being treated “worse than animals”, the Supreme Court said today as it pulled up Delhi amid spurt of virus cases in the national capital.”COVID-19 patients are treated worse than animals. In one case, a body was found in the garbage. Patients are dying and nobody is there to even attend to them,” the court said this afternoon as it asked the Arvind Kejriwal government to explain the fall in testing in the city.

Delhi has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in India after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The national capital has logged 34,687 patients so far and 1,085 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has repeatedly said that the city is prepared to tackle the pandemic amid a spurt in the number of patients, expected to rise up to 5.5 lakh by July.

Slamming the AAP government over its handling of the outbreak and not following center’s guidelines, the top court said: “The situation in Delhi is horrendous, horrific and pathetic. the very sorry state of affairs in its hospitals that aren’t giving due care and concern to the bodies. Patients’ families aren’t even informed about deaths. Families haven’t been able to attend the last rites too in some cases.”

“Patients are running from pillar to post to get admitted while large numbers of beds are vacant. According to some reports, a government hospital in Delhi had bodies in the lobby and waiting area. Inside the ward, most beds were unoccupied,” it added.
