You should never keep things bottled up because racism is not okay: Archer

0

England fast bowler Jofra Archer has urged victims of racial abuse not to keep things bottled up and speak out as widespread protest continue to take place in various parts of the world following the death of George Floyd, an African-American who died in police custody in Minneapolis in the United States on May 25.

“I’m very glad the Black Lives Matter campaign has got as vocal as this,” Archer, who himself has been subjected to racial abuse in the past, wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“As an individual, I’ve always been one for speaking out, especially if something bothers you. My personal view is that you should never keep things bottled up, because racism is not okay.”

The England team was known for its diversity in last year’s World Cup with players of New Zealand, South African and South Asian origins making the bulk of the first team when the Eoin Morgan-led side emerged victorious. The captain Morgan himself is Irish and had said that the team had Allah with them, as he was told by spinner Adil Rashid.

“We had Allah with us as well. I spoke to Adil (Rashid), he said Allah was definitely with us. I said we had the rub of the green,” Morgan had said in a press conference after the summit clash against New Zealand.

In his column, Archer lauded his team for its diversity and said: “We all live in the country and if you are English, you have as much right to play as anyone else.”

“There was a picture … of me, Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid hugging in celebration during the 2019 World Cup. It told you everything you need to know about our team.”

“Black Lives Matter” protests against racism and police brutality have been witnessed in major European cities as well as other parts of the world since the death of Floyd.

Repetitive negative thinking linked to dementia in later life

0

Are you a negative thinker? Read this carefully. Researchers have found that repetitive negative thinking in later life may raise the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The findings, published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, revealed that persistently engaging in negative thinking patterns was linked to cognitive decline and greater deposits of two harmful proteins responsible for Alzheimer’s disease.

“Here, we found that certain thinking patterns implicated in depression and anxiety could be an underlying reason why people with those disorders are more likely to develop dementia,” study lead author Natalie Marchant from the University College London in the UK.

In the study, the research team studied 292 people aged over 55 and found ‘repetitive negative thinking’ (RNT) is linked to subsequent cognitive decline as well as the deposition of harmful brain proteins linked to Alzheimer’s.

Over a period of two years, the study participants responded to questions about how they typically think about negative experiences, focusing on the RNT patterns like rumination about the past and worry about the future.

The participants also completed measures of depression and anxiety symptoms.

Their cognitive function was assessed, measuring memory, attention, spatial cognition, and language.

Some (113) of the participants also underwent the PET brain scans, measuring deposits of tau and amyloid, two proteins which cause the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, when they build up in the brain.

The findings showed that people who exhibited higher RNT patterns experienced more cognitive decline over a four-year period, and declines in memory (which is among the earlier signs of Alzheimer’s disease).

They were more likely to have amyloid and tau deposits in their brain.

Depression and anxiety were associated with subsequent cognitive decline but not with either amyloid or tau deposition, suggesting that RNT could be the main reason why depression and anxiety contribute to Alzheimer’s disease risk.

“We propose that repetitive negative thinking maybe a new risk factor for dementia as it could contribute to dementia in a unique way,” Marchant said.

The researchers suggest that RNT may contribute to Alzheimer’s risk via its impact on indicators of stress such as high blood pressure, as other studies have found that physiological stress can contribute to amyloid and tau deposition.

They noted that RNT should now be further investigated as a potential risk factor for dementia, and psychological tools, such as mindfulness or meditation, should be studied to see if these could reduce dementia risk.

0

Heavy traffic congestion was witnessed at the Delhi-Noida border near Delhi-Noida-Direct flyway (DND) on Monday, a day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the opening of national capital’s borders with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Heavy vehicular traffic was witnessed at the DND, Kalindi Kunj-Noida, Ghazipur-Delhi and Delhi-Gurugram borders leading to long queues.

Many people with no proper passes were returned from the borders. The confusion led to the increase in waiting time to cross the border creating bottle necks as office goers increased in numbers from today.

Kejriwal, who had decided to shut the national capital’s border with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for a week, on Sunday announced that the borders are being opened from Monday.

Workers throwing the body of a COVID-19 positive man into a pit in Puducherry

0

A video of government workers in Puducherry hurriedly throwing the body of a COVID-19 positive man into a pit has caused massive outrage, prompting the administration to order a probe into the incident.

The video shows four men in PPEs moving the lifeless body from an ambulance and literally dumping it into the grave. Less then 30 seconds later one of the men is heard telling a government official that they have “thrown the body” for which the official shows thumbs up in approval.

It also appears that the front line workers ignored a series of COVID protocol while handling the body. The video shows the dead person was merely wrapped with a white cloth and not in a bag as manadated in such cases. The cloth wrapped around the body also opened up as it was dropped exposing the workers to tremendous risk of infection. It is not clear yet if the body was duly embalmed.

Sources in Puducherry told NDTV that the body was of a Chennai resident who had tested positive during his visit. The undignified handling of the COVID patient has led to massive outrage in Puducherry.

“Dignified disposal of dead body is a matter of right. Such an insult to a dead person is an offence under section 500 of Indian Penal Code. The health workers along with those supervisory staff are punishable with penalty for defamation of deceased person,” India Against Corruption said in statement.

Its President, Dr S Anandkumar, called it “Unprofessional disaster management in Puducherry”.Sources in the health department say, the body was handed over to Revenue officials for burial.

Puducherry Collector Arun has ordered a probe. “I’ve issued a memo to the concerned department. It’s very unfortunate. I am enquiring into the issue. Have properly briefed them,” he told NDTV.Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi said show cause notices are being served to the individuals involved.

Not long ago in neigbouring Chennai, the body of a doctor who died after contracting coronavirus was not allowed to be buried. Mob attacked the health workers in the ambulance carrying the body of Dr Simon Hercules forcing his friend to drive the ambulance and bury the doctor himself.

The incident later forced the Tamil Nadu government to bring an ordinance which allowed jail term of upto three years for anyone blocking or attempting to block funerals of coronavirus victims.

KTR strongly retorted Revanth Reddy’s allegations

0

Telangana minister KTR condemned the castigating allegations against him regarding the farmhouse construction in Janwada village near Hyderabad Gandipet, against the GO 111.

Congress working president MP Revanth Reddy filed a petition alleging KTR violation of the Government order with illegal construction.

KTR strongly retorted Revanth Reddy’s allegations, calling them a deliberate defamation campaign. The Telangana minister said he will seek appropriate legal remedies by exposing the falsehood of allegations by Revanth Reddy.

Earlier, based on the petition filed by Congress leader Revanth Reddy, NGT (National Green Tribunal) issued notices to KTR along with the Telangana pollution control board, GHMC, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage Board, HMDA, Hyderabad lakes, and Water Body management circle.

NGT started investigating with members Justice Ramakrishnan and Saibal Das Gupta. NGT initiated a fact-finding committee to verify illegal construction, permissions, and other facts.

This committee will be visiting the site and verify the legitimacy of the construction and if not, what could be the recovery process and compensation against violation of GO.

Revanth Reddy lawyer K Sravan Kumar argued that the construction is under the disguise of green cover like a poly-house farming model and that is the reason for not recognizing it as a farmhouse for a long time. He also recalled villagers mentioning KTR’s frequent visits after the construction completed.

According to the allegations of Revanth Reddy, the farmhouse is built in almost one lakh square feet with three-story, a swimming pool, and a garden. Revanth’s petition also alleged that a prime water source for Usman Sagar is sealed with mud to lay the road for the farmhouse.

Revanth claims his visit to the construction was to collect evidence regarding the illegality of it and was arrested during the same. Revanth Reddy was arrested for flying a drone unlawfully over the farmhouse.

Virat Kohli’s post was flooded with hilarious responses from fans

0

Virat Kohli looks eager to come out of the lockdown and resume his outdoor training and that was clear to see in his latest post on social media. On Sunday, the India captain shared an edited running video of himself on Twitter and Instagram.

Virat Kohli’s post was flooded with hilarious responses from fans, cricketers and actors alike. Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh commented “Nice edit” on the Instagram post, while Bollywood actor Kunal Khemu came up with an amusing caption: “Feeling low? Pick yourself up and RUN!!”

The world of cricket is on a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic. Recently during an Instagram live session with spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Kohli said he sees the game changing a lot when it resumes after coronavirus lockdown.

“Game changing a lot? Man I do not know what is going to happen, it is so strange thinking even of practice sessions like instinctively you want to clap/hi-five, but you cannot do that, you will meet people after a long time, and you would have to fold hands and stay away,” Kohli told Ashwin during the interaction.

Earlier, Kohli shared a workout video on Instagram where the India captain can be seen lifting heavyweights that not only caught the attention of his fans but also impressed his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate AB de Villiers.

Kohli would have been busy leading the RCB in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Board of Control for Cricket in India postponed the lucrative league indefinitely.

Darren Sammy had made an appeal to the ICC

0

Former West Indies skipper Darren Sammy lost his cool on Saturday as he learnt the meaning of a jibe which was directed at him during his Indian Premier League (IPL) stint with SunRisers Hyderabad.

The former Windies T20 World Cup-winning skipper said that he along with Sri Lanka player Thisara Perera were subjected to chants of the racist slur when they played for SunRisers Hyderabad. Sammy further said that he thought that the word meant strong black man, but now as he has realised the true meaning of the world, he is angry.

The former Windies skipper has been a vocal supporter of the protests that are currently going on in the United States over the death of an African-American man named George Floyd. On Tuesday, Sammy had made an appeal to the ICC and other cricket boards to support the fight against social injustice and racism.

“ICC and all the other boards are you guys not seeing what’s happening to ppl like me? Are you not gonna speak against the social injustice against my kind. This is not only about America. This happens every day #BlackLivesMatter now is not the time to be silent. I wanna hear u,” Sammy tweeted.

Opening batsman Chris Gayle had also condoled the demise of Floyd and had said that he too has been a victim of racism. The left-handed Gayle said that it’s a myth that racism doesn’t exist in cricket as well.

Ever since the demise of Floyd, protests erupted from the demonstrations in cities from San Francisco to Boston. The officer, who pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck, has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

He and three other officers have been fired from the force as well after the video of Floyd’s death emerged.Earlier, an over 200-year-old historic St John’s church near White House was vandalised and set on fire as protests over the death of Floyd escalated into rioting and multiple fires were seen in Washington and other US cities.

Telangana High Court postponed tenth standard board exams

0

There was a suspense on the tenth standard board exams and the Telangana High Court postponed the exams in GHMC and Rangareddy district while gave its green signal for rest of the districts in state. As Hyderabad is under RED ZONE of Corona virus, the High Court asked the government to hold exams on later dates.

However, the High Court gave its nod for holding the supplementary exams in GHMC, Rangareddy district and also directed the Telangana government to consider students appearing for supplementary as regular ones.

Before the High Court’s verdict, the Telangana government has requested the court to give permission for conduction exams across all districts. Countering this, the court posed questions at the government. “How will be responsible if a student dies in the middle of the exams? What if an exam centre falls in Containment zone? We cannot take risk. More than the exams, the lives of students matter more,” said the Court.

The government argued that holding exams just for one region will have difficulties such as question paper needed to be prepared again. To this the court asked the government whether students lives are important or technical aspects. Finally the Telangana government has accepted the proposals of the High Court.

Balayya is actually planning to meet the CM YS Jagan individually

0

The reopening of film shootings issue escalated to a new level when Chiranjeevi and others met Telangana’s Cinematography minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, but without Balakrishna. The Nandamuri actor put his dissent out with unwanted words like ‘land deal meetings’, which turned a big turmoil when Naga Babu condemned his comments adding much fuel to it with similar comments.

The heated arguments from sympathizers on both sides almost ended and there is a new topic coming up now. It is all about the big wigs of the Telugu film industry meeting the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh now. This time, producer C Kalyan said he invited Balayya, but the actor may not be joining the meet on June 9, being the eve of his birthday.

Though it appears to be just any reason to skip the meeting on that day, it is now heard that Balayya is actually planning to meet the CM YS Jagan individually, but not along with the group of big actors and producers in Telugu cinema. In fact, he is said to be seeking appointments to meet both the CMs regarding the film shoot reopening and many other issues, but in no way interested in joining the meet on June 9.

Well, it is not any sensation if Balayya meets KCR, considering KCR’s admiration for NTR and the matured thinking of Balayya and KCR, that keep politics and ideological difference at bay during a meet with different prominence. But, +it has to be seen if Balayya really is looking towards meeting AP CM YS Jagan, as that meet could remotely embarrass Chandrababu Naidu, given the different political equations in Andhra Pradesh from Telangana.

Indian-origin doctor who survived Covid-19 working on drugs to beat it

0

An Indian-origin doctor who survived COVID-19 is now working on programmes to develop medicines to treat the disease while also treating coronavirus patients with empathy informed by her own experience, according to a media report.

Aakriti Pandita, who was the first healthcare worker (HCW) to come down with the disease in Rhode Island, told the Providence Journal, “That changed me as a clinician.”

The newspaper said, “She’s able to speak from experience when she tells her patients that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. There was for her, too.”

She has expressed concern over the safety of HCWs being overcome by the disease. A shortage of personal protection equipment has exacerbated the problem.

Pandita tweeted, “Limited data shows at least 45 HCWs in the US have already lost their lives. The question is how long are we willing to wait? What is the sweet number that will shake soul of this nation?”

Among the HCWs killed by COVID-19 in the US are Indian-origin father and daughter, both doctors. Satyender Dev Khanna and his daughter, Priya Khanna, died in April after being infected by the disease while treating patients in New Jersey.

Pandita, who is an infectious disease specialist, is now involved in clinical studies on investigational drugs for COVID-19 helping enroll patients and following up their treatment to figure out if the treatments work, according to the Journal.

She told the newspaper about COVID-19: “It’s difficult, and it’s mysterious. But it won’t be mysterious for that long. I think it’s just a matter of time before we figure it out.”

Pandita, 31, grew up in Delhi, where her father is a doctor, and studied medicine in Kashmir before coming to the US.

She is pursuing a fellowship in infectious disease at Ivy League Brown University in Providence and practising at Lifespan hospitals treating patients who have ailments ranging from staph infections to HIV, the newspaper said.

As one of the first people to come down with the disease in Rhode Island state, her diagnosis proved to be a problem because she had not travelled abroad or had direct contact with a known COVID-19 patient.

She developed symptoms of the disease in late February after a trip to Colorado state, where she is going take up a position as an attending physician soon.

Although she felt that it was more than a bacterial infection and probably COVID-19, doctors were sceptical and her persistence finally got her tested on March 9 confirming her fears, according to the Journal.

She told the newspaper, “It was an unsettling question for me: How many cases did we miss in those early days because of our lack of understanding of this disease?”

The Journal said it was likely that she was infected at an airport.

She, however, got better without going to a hospital and after tested negative twice for the coronavirus, she went back to work.

She now advocates for more work in the field of infectious diseases.

“Pandemics like this, it really reminds us that we need more work in the fields of infectious diseases,” she told the Journal.

Delhi sold liquor worth Rs 235 cr till May 30

0

While it hoped to earn more revenue through liquor sale, the Delhi government has collected only about Rs 235 crore, excluding the new ‘special corona fee’, between May 4 and 30.

The liquor sale was allowed in the city from May 4 — with the starting of lockdown 3. It was closed since the lockdown was imposed on March 25.

On the first day of sale, when the special cess was not imposed, liquor worth over Rs five crore was sold, as per the Excise Department data.

However, just a day after allowing the sale of liquor in the city, the Delhi government from May 5 imposed a ‘Special corona fee’ on the alcohol sale which was 70 per cent of the MRP.

Excluding the cess, on the second day, the sale was about Rs 4.4 crore, while on May 6 it was Rs 4.9 crore.

On May 8 and 9, the sale was for more than Rs 15 and 18 crore — highest per day sale in a day during the month, also excluding the cess.

Till May 30, the government sold liquor worth over Rs 234.54 crore and the ‘Special corona fee’ can be counted as about Rs 160 crore additional income.

There were two dry days — May 7 and 25, during the period.

In the Budget 2020-21, out of the government’s total expectation in the tax revenue, 14 per cent or Rs 6,300 crore was from the State Excise.

The new financial year started on April 1 and till May 3, no sale was done due to the lockdown due to coronavirus.

Four government corporations — Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation; Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation; Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited; and Delhi Consumer’s Cooperative Wholesale Store — control the sale of liquor with about 475 shops.

While the shops under the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation have sold liquor worth Rs 86.5 crore; the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation sold it worth Rs 47.6 crore between May 4 and 30.

The shops under Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited and the Delhi Consumer’s Cooperative Wholesale Storesold liquor worth Rs 45.2 crore each during the same period.

The Private shops have sold liquor worth Rs 9.9 crore between May 23 and 30.

Owing to revenue losses due to the coronavirus lockdown, the Delhi government on May 31 said it has demanded Rs 5,000 crore from the Central government.
Delhi Finance Minister Manish Sisodia said the minimum monthly expenditure of the government is Rs 3,500 crore, including salaries and other official expenses.

“In the last two months, the tax collection was Rs 500 crore for each month. Rs 1,735 crore was collected from other sources. However, for two months, we need Rs 7,000 crore,” Sisodia said.

On May 3, reporting a revenue loss of about Rs 3,200 crore in April compared to the previous year, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the lockdown is making it difficult for the government to pay salaries to its employees.
