Malls open but shops closed in some UP districts

0

Shopping malls opened on Monday in Lucknow but shops inside the malls remained closed.

The Adarsh Vyapar Mandal said that majority of the shops in malls did not reopen on Monday in support of their demands.

Adarsh Vyapar Mandal state President, Sanjay Gupta, told IANS that the shop keepers wanted the mall owners to waive off the rent and common area maintenance fee for the lockdown period.

He said that shops would remain closed until their demands are met.

“The shop keepers also want the rent and maintenance fee for the next 12 months should also be reduced since all shop keepers have suffered losses during the lockdown. They are not in a position to pay exorbitant rents being charged by malls,” he said.

Gupta further said that if the shop keepers leave the shops, they lose the considerable amount they have spent on decoration and remodeling of the shop.

“Customers are few and the shop keepers will not register good sales. If they are asked to pay huge amounts as rent, they will end up suffering more losses,” he said.

The Vyapar Mandal has sought the intervention of the government in the matter.

“Till the matter is resolved, the shop in malls will not open,” he said.

He said that apart from Lucknow, shops in malls in Gorakhpur, Bareilly and Noida also remained closed on Monday.

Devotees throng religious places after months of lockdown

0

Religious places across the country flung open their doors to the devotees almost three months after they were shut due to the COVID-19 induced nationwide lockdown.

From temples and Gurudwaras to mosques and churches, a steady stream of devotees thronged all the religious sites.

While people stood inside marked circles in queues at one side and maintained social distancing, priests dawned protective masks and sat at the opposite end. Idols were also sanitised properly.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered prayers at Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhnath temple, of which he is the head priest, after it reopened its doors to devotees for the first time in over two months.

In Delhi, Ravinder Goel, trustee of the Jhandewalan temple said, “Thermal screening is being done twice, once near the shoe rack and again at the entrance. There is also a sanitisation tunnel at the entrance. Standing places in the lines were also earmarked clearly so as to avoid crowding.”

The temple trustee added that religious offerings like fruits are not being given to the devotees, but instead they are being handed a pouch with ‘mishri’ after they head out of the temple. Temple bells have also been covered with clothes.

At the Prachin Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, a man dressed as ‘Hanuman’ danced to the tune of drums. BJP leader Manish Tiwari also visited the temple.

People also flocked to the Kalka Ji temple and the Gauri Shankar Temple in Chandni Chowk to offer their prayers. In Kalka Ji, the temple authorities turned back a batch of old people or parents who had brought their small children along.

A devotee said, “I have been waiting for so long for the temples to open. I will pray to God to keep my family safe from the deadly virus.”

At the religious places, authorities were seen directing people not to touch the idols. Not more than 5-10 devotees were allowed inside the shrine at a time. Each devotee was asked to pass through the sanitisation tunnel installed at the entry gate.

The devotees without face masks were not allowed, and entry of those below 10 years and above 65 years was barred.

Besides taking the precautionary measures, a Noida-based Sanatan Dharma Temple also provided masks to those who did not have it.

Delhi’s Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid also reopened for devotees. They were santinsed in the morning before reopening.

People also arrived at Sri Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in Delhi to offer prayers where community kitchens or langar was also served. One of the priests said, “All the precautionary measures are being taken. Sarovar is, however, closed. We are ensuring that people do not face any issue.”

Balakrishna’s sensational comments at Mahanadu where he had exuded confidence that TDP would bounce back to power even before the next general election had raised shock in the political circuit. Responding to Balayya’s comments, Posani said Balyya’s comments need not be taken seriously. He said Balayya is an honest person who isn’t greedy for position or power in politics. Posani, however, said that Balayya has got short temper and his anger is short-lived.

Talking about CM Jagan, Posani said Jagan is delivering a strong leadership to the state and there’s no doubt about it. He said no one can dethrone CM Jagan as he has got the support of MLAs and people. He commented that Jagan is no NTR to be dethroned. Posani stated that Jagan will be CM for next two terms.

Though Posani has countered Balayya, he has also praised Balayya for his honesty and being non-corrupt. “When his father NTR was Chief Minister, none of his children had gone near him. Ramarao’s sons have not earned by taking advantage of their father’s position when he was CM. Neither media nor then opposition leaders in Congress have leveled any allegations against Ramarao’s children. Balayya is definitely non corrupt. But he has anger, aggression that lasts only for a minute. It won’t cause any loss to society,” said Posani who asked to take Balayya’s comments light.

Messi trained alone on Saturday at Camp Nou

Lionel Messi will be fit to play in Barcelona’s first game back against Real Mallorca, despite some “minor tightness” in his right thigh, coach Quique Setien said on Sunday. Messi trained alone on Saturday at Camp Nou after sitting out the team’s previous two sessions, raising doubts over his involvement in the trip to Mallorca on Saturday.

But when asked whether Messi would be able to play next weekend, Setien told Movistar on Sunday: “Messi is not the only one that has not trained and felt some discomfort.”It’s what has happened to everyone or practically everyone since they have been back.

“It is some minor tightness and we have it under control. He is doing perfectly and will not have any problem.”Barcelona said on Friday that Messi should return to full training “in a few days’ time”, but his absence is a concern given the squad have only 10 days to train together before La Liga resumes on Thursday.

Messi has also endured an injury-interrupted season. The 32-year-old was out for six weeks between August and September with a calf injury and then at the end of September, he missed another week with a problem in his left thigh.

After regaining fitness, he quickly found form, scoring 24 goals in 31 appearances to help Barcelona sit two points clear at the top of La Liga.Setien also gave an update on the fitness of Luis Suarez, who has been given the green light by the club to return after undergoing surgery on his right knee in January.

“He is better than we expected,” Setien said. “But the question is how ready he is after so long out, and whether he is ready to start.”La Liga will resume on Thursday with Sevilla against Real Betis after a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic. There are 11 rounds left to play, with fixtures expected to take place every day until the season ends on July 19.

Arvind Kejriwal had been unwell since Sunday afternoon

Arvind Kejriwal has gone into self-quarantine and will take a coronavirus test after complaints of mild fever and a sore throat, Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said today. The Chief Minister has cancelled all his meetings.Mr Kejriwal, 51, had been unwell since Sunday afternoon and hasn’t met anyone since then.

He has isolated himself at his official home in Delhi.AAP leaders and many others tweeted get-well-soon wishes for Mr Kejriwal.”Our beloved Arvind Kejriwal has mild fever and sore throat since yesterday and is on self-isolation on doctors’ advice. Tomorrow he will get a Covid-19 test at 9 am. We all pray for your good health,” posted AAP MLA Jarnail Singh.

“ArvindKejriwal, you are our inspiration and hero – a frontline warrior against coronavirus. You put yourself at risk for the well-being of people of Delhi. As you face a health challenge, our thoughts, wishes and prayers are with you,” tweeted another MLA, Raghav Chaddha, with the hashtag #TakeCareAK.

On Sunday, the Chief Minister addressed a very brief digital press conference at noon to announce a new policy of reserving hospital beds for residents of Delhi. He was seen wearing a mask.

Amid complaints of coronavirus patients or suspected patients being denied hospital beds, Mr Kejriwal declared that hospitals run by the Delhi government and some private hospitals would be reserved only for residents of the capital.

He also said Delhi would reopen its borders, which were sealed in the first place “thinking that our hospitals will be flooded with people from other states”.

Delhi has seen a spurt in COVID-19 cases and over 1,000 new cases daily for the past few days. There are over 27,600 cases in the capital.

A path towards plastic-free world

0

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues and consumers are increasingly critical of the packaging of products that they buy.

Each year, eight million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, killing one million marine birds and threatening hundreds of marine life species.

By phasing out plastic used for consumer product packaging, the lighting major Signify will avoid the use of over 2,500 tons of plastics per year.

“This is equal to 125 million PET bottles which, placed in a row, would stretch more than 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles), roughly the distance from Troms in the north of Norway, to Gibraltar at the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula, and back. On top of that, our new packaging is smaller, reducing carbon emissions from transport and the materials we use by 6,000 tons per year – equivalent to the amount of CO2 that 270,000 fully grown trees can absorb in a year.

“Plastic waste has a very negative impact on our planet and its biodiversity and we decided that we must take a leading role and start using plastic-free alternatives. It is the right thing to do and meets the increasing expectations of our customers,” said Eric Rondolat, CEO of Signify. He added that he looks forward to the moment when they can announce going fully plastic-free in their packaging.

On average, the packaging policy requires all packaging to contain more than 80 percent recycled paper and virgin materials must be from certified renewable sources. In cases where paper-based materials aren’t applicable, Signify looks into other non-plastic alternatives. It has already started the phase-out of plastic by removing commonly used plastic inserts from Philips Hue bulb packaging. It has also selected paper foam to package the recently launched Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box.

As per the company, replacing blister packs with paper-based box packaging will be sequenced across their product portfolio and different regions, starting with LED bulbs in Europe in the third quarter of 2020, and the rest of the world following 2021 beginning.

Signify said that it already started replacing the plastic blister packaging for its LED lamps with paper-based materials in the Pacific, where the switch was received very positively and resulted in an increase in sales.

“When we replaced our packaging in the Pacific region, customers said that it was more appealing and environmentally friendly. I call upon other companies to join us in making the switch and will gladly share our lessons learned,” Rondolat added.

“Phasing out plastics is a further way we are driving sustainability in our business and another milestone alongside our Brighter Lives, Better World sustainability program. We are on track to achieve carbon neutrality globally this year and already achieved carbon neutrality in 15 of our 19 markets. We were recognized in 2019 by being named Industry Leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the third year in a row.”

Michael Holding campaign against racism

0

West Indies cricket great Michael Holding believes regulations against racism in sports will remain “just a plaster on the sore” as long as the society does not unite to tackle the menace. Asked about his views on the worldwide campaign against racism after the killing of African-American George Floyd in the US and numerous athletes taking a stand against it, Holding said racism in sports cannot be stopped by merely having tough rules.

“You will get racism, people will shout things at cricket grounds, football grounds, wherever, you can’t stamp out racism by tackling individual sports, you have to tackle the society,” Holding, who took 249 wickets in 60 Tests for West Indies between 1975 and 1987, said in an Instagram chat on Sunday night.

“It is the people from the society who go to these grounds and shout racist slogans or racist abuse at people. You have to tackle it from the society itself, not the sport,” the 66-year-old added.

Holding said the realisation has to be within the society that it is unacceptable to discriminate.”Fine, sports can have their rules and regulations under which you enter the ground, that’s just a plaster on the sore,” he said.

“The people in the society have got to understand that it is unacceptable, and when you tackle it in the society itself, it will not spill over in sport,” he added.Holding’s compatriots Darren Sammy and Chris Gayle have spoken strongly against racism and supported the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign around the world.

Sammy, a two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain, has gone on to allege that he was subjected to racist comments during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

Yes Bank case: ED raids five locations in Mumbai

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday carried out searches at five locations in Mumbai in Yes Bank money laundering case.

Separate ED teams conducted raids at locations which belong to global tours and travel company Cox and Kings and other different premises of some suspected persons linked to the case.

The raids were carried out with an aim to gather information and proof of dealings between Yes Bank co-founder Rana Kapoor and Cox and Kings firm, said an agency source.

The ED took the action under its ongoing probe in the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). It is learnt that Yes Bank has more than Rs 2,000 crore of loan exposure to Cox and Kings firm — one of the top borrowers of the bank.

The ED is probing Yes Bank and a number of other large corporate groups in connection with an alleged fraud case where huge loans issued by the bank became non-performing assets (NPAs).

The agency arrested former MD and CEO of Yes Bank, Rana Kapoor on March 8 this year and also filed its first chargesheet in the case before a special PMLA court in Mumbai in the first week of May.

Kapoor is accused of sanctioning loans to certain firms against kickbacks.

Among other things, the central probe agency is investigating Rs 600 crore received by a company allegedly controlled by Kapoor, his wife and three daughters from an entity linked to the scam-hit Dewan Housing Finance Limited (DHFL). Kapoor and his family members allegedly got benefits worth Rs 4,300 crore through the companies controlled by them as kickbacks for sanctioning huge loans, the ED has alleged.

A sustainable future for travel

0

Sustainable travel has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent times and is touted to be the future of travel as per the “new normal” with the Covid-19 pandemic acting as a catalyst for this change to come sooner.

Switzerland has been one of the countries pioneering in the direction of providing the travellers in this direction. There are a plethora of initiatives taken by the alpine nation to lure tourists who are looking forward to enjoying a sustainable, guilt-free vacation.

Conscious travellers will find a lot of activities in Switzerland that have been designed to protect the environment and that use the resources of the country, judiciously. For example, a 450m Solar Ski Lift in Saline Valley is used to transport snow sports enthusiasts to and fro the mountain peaks and simultaneously used to produce solar power. Using the power required for the operation of the Ski Lift, the excess production of power is sold to environmentally conscious parties in the region.

A major reason for the reduced carbon footprint is the Swiss Travel System. It has the world’s most effective public transportation system — a fully-integrated air, train, and bus system — powered majorly by clean hydroelectric power sources. The country is an active advocate of public transport for citizens as well as tourists not only because it is fast and reliable but also to minimize negative impact in Alpine areas.

A train journey generates 20 times less CO2 than a car journey on a comparable route. And with SBB’s (1) eco-friendly transport solutions and its drive to move major traffic onto the railways, Switzerland saves five million tonnes of CO2-emissions per year, equivalent to 10 percent of the country’s overall emissions.

As eco-tourism takes precedence, Switzerland has been promoting businesses, academic initiatives, as well as other enterprises, determined to make bio-friendly use of resources for the entire world’s benefit.

The alpine country has a number of “Green Accommodations” that include farm stays, hotels, and campsites equipped with plenty of ecologically sound facilities like proper recycling of waste, usage of a heating system devoid of oil or wood, and optimized resource planning further boost their ratings of eco-consciousness.

According to the federal forestry law, forests must occupy at least thirty percent of the nation’s land. As a result, Switzerland has numerous places filled with clear, fresh air coming from the forests that abound in a variety of flora and fauna.

Surveys like the Environmental Performance Index have ranked Switzerland as a sustainable nation. They cite both air quality and water quality as being the best in the world, and Switzerland ranks exceptionally high on biodiversity and ecosystem vitality.

NYT editor resigns amid outrage over controversial op-ed

0

The New York Times’ editorial page editor James Bennet resigned due to a controversial op-ed written by a Republican Senator published last week which received widespread criticism, according to the paper.

According to an article published Sunday night on the newspaper’s website, the Times’ publisher A.G. Sulzberger said he and Bennet both “concluded that James would not be able to lead the team through the next leg of change required”, reports Xinhua news agency.

The piece by Republican Senator Tom Cotton, titled “Send In the Troops”, advocated the deployment of the military across the US to help respond to violence and chaos that erupted in protests over George Floyd’s death.

The op-ed was met with widespread criticism that it put African-Americans in danger, as many believe the presence of military force would lead to an escalation of tensions.

Its publication has also prompted criticism within the Times. Over 800 staff members have signed a letter of protest to senior editors and the company’s executives, arguing that Cotton’s article contains misinformation, especially for his depiction of “antifa”.

On June 5, a lengthy note was added to the op-ed on the Times’ Website, saying “the essay fell short of our standards and should not have been published”.

“For example, the published piece presents as facts assertions about the role of ‘cadres of left-wing radicals like antifa’; in fact, those allegations have not been substantiated and have been widely questioned,” said the note.

It also said the tone of the op-ed is “needlessly harsh and falls short of the thoughtful approach that advances useful debate”.

Bennet said in a staff meeting on June 5 that he had not read the essay before it was published, and apologized for the Op-Ed, the Times reported.

Bennet’s deputy, James Dao, is being reassigned to the paper’s newsroom.

Cotton on Sunday retweeted a Times’ article on Bennet’s resignation, commenting it was “false and offensive”.

“I called for using military force as a backup-only if police are overwhelmed to stop riots, not to be used against protesters,” he argued in the tweet.

You should never keep things bottled up because racism is not okay: Archer

0

England fast bowler Jofra Archer has urged victims of racial abuse not to keep things bottled up and speak out as widespread protest continue to take place in various parts of the world following the death of George Floyd, an African-American who died in police custody in Minneapolis in the United States on May 25.

“I’m very glad the Black Lives Matter campaign has got as vocal as this,” Archer, who himself has been subjected to racial abuse in the past, wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“As an individual, I’ve always been one for speaking out, especially if something bothers you. My personal view is that you should never keep things bottled up, because racism is not okay.”

The England team was known for its diversity in last year’s World Cup with players of New Zealand, South African and South Asian origins making the bulk of the first team when the Eoin Morgan-led side emerged victorious. The captain Morgan himself is Irish and had said that the team had Allah with them, as he was told by spinner Adil Rashid.

“We had Allah with us as well. I spoke to Adil (Rashid), he said Allah was definitely with us. I said we had the rub of the green,” Morgan had said in a press conference after the summit clash against New Zealand.

In his column, Archer lauded his team for its diversity and said: “We all live in the country and if you are English, you have as much right to play as anyone else.”

“There was a picture … of me, Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid hugging in celebration during the 2019 World Cup. It told you everything you need to know about our team.”

“Black Lives Matter” protests against racism and police brutality have been witnessed in major European cities as well as other parts of the world since the death of Floyd.
