COVID-19 cases are doubling every 12-13 days in Delhi

0

Delhi will have 5.5 lakh coronavirus cases by July 31 based on the current doubling rate of the infection, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said today, predicting a huge demand for hospital beds a day after his government’s decision to reserve beds for residents was cancelled by the Lieutenant Governor.

COVID-19 cases are doubling every 12-13 days in Delhi, Mr Sisodia said after a meeting today with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and top central officials.”5.5 lakh COVID-19 cases are expected in Delhi by July 31. We will need 80,000 beds by then,” he told reporters.By the Delhi government’s estimates, by June 15 there will be 44,000 cases, one lakh cases by 30 June and 2.25 lakh cases by July 15.

Mr Sisodia said he had urged the Lieutenant Governor to reconsider his move to strike down the Delhi Government’s order reserving hospitals except for those run by the centre for the city’s residents. Mr Baijal refused to reconsider his decision and it was not taken up in the meeting, he said.Assessing a steep curve for Delhi’s virus cases in the coming weeks, Mr Sisodia said 50 per cent of all beds in Delhi were generally occupied by those who came for treatment from outside.

“Now we see that there might be a situation that 80,000 beds would be needed by end of July – that too only for residents of Delhi, not outsiders… so where will this come from? What is being done about it,” the Deputy Chief Minister questioned.

“We brought up this scenario during today’s meeting but nothing was discussed. We feel the only way beds may be available is if all other planned medical procedures can be put on hold for a later date and the focus is on COVID-19… we are still thinking what needs to be done.”

Mr Sisodia also told reporters that according to central officials, Delhi was not in the community transmission stage. His colleague Satyendra Jain, city Health Minister, said half the virus cases in Delhi could not be traced to any source. Asked whether this could be seen as community transmission, Mr Jain said: “Not if the centre doesn’t declare it.”

Italy’s football bosses approved on Monday

0

Italy’s football bosses approved on Monday the holding of play-offs should the restarting season be suspended again and an algorithm with which to decide the league table should the campaign come to a definitive halt. Serie A starts up again on June 20 after three months away, and with Italy one of the countries worst hit by the coronavirus its football authorities have backed contingency plans in case of a new spike in infections.

“Football is the winner,” said Italian Football Federation (FIGC) chief Gabriele Gravina after the approval via a vote in Rome.”We are restarting on June 20 with the aim of finishing the season. Until July 10-15, we will keep in mind the possibility of holding play-offs.”

Gravina added that the format of the play-offs, which would be held to decide top places and relegation positions, will be decided “alongside the league before the restart”.The season will recommence with the four games in hand that were left to play before COVID-19 shut down global sport. There are also 12 full rounds of matches still to play.

Should it not be possible to play those games, league placings will be decided by a mathematical formula. That formula will take into account the number of points gathered by each team throughout the season and other factors, including average points per home and away game, multiplied respectively by the number of home and away matches each side has left to play.

The algorithm would be used to decide league placings, European qualification and relegation, but not to decide who wins the league title.A champion will only be named if the season is completed or if a team cannot be caught before a premature end of the campaign.

Serie A clubs are opposed to the algorithm and wanted to block relegation to Serie B should the season be stopped again, but lost Monday’s vote 18 to three. The FIGC also announced that Italy’s summer transfer window will be held between September 1 and October 5. The winter window will open on January 4 next year and close at the end of that month.

“I must have hit a sore spot with my Tweet about my family history” : Boris Becker

0

Boris Becker says racism in Germany needs to be discussed openly after the tennis icon drew criticism on social media for taking part in a Black Lives Matter protest. The six-time Grand Slam champion claims he was the target of angry comments “from Germany” on Twitter after participating in an anti-racism demonstration in London over the weekend. Becker spoke out in a video message posted on the platform.

“I must have hit a sore spot with my Tweet about my family history” and Black Lives Matter, said Becker, whose ex-wife Barbara is the daughter of an African-American, while the mother of his second wife Lilly comes from Suriname.

“In our country it is swept a bit under the carpet and I think that’s a pity.”We should talk about it much more publicly,” said the 52-year-old, who called for more social engagement against racism in his native country.”We are all one family.”

In an earlier Tweet, Becker said he was “shocked, shaken and horrified” by the “many insults ONLY from Germany”.”Why, why, why? Have we become a country of racists…?” he added.

The death of George Floyd, who died in police custody on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, sparked protests across Europe and Germany at the weekend.According to German police, around 10,000 protestors gathered at Berlin’s Alexanderplatz on Saturday, while there were similar numbers for demonstrations in Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg.

Respect for kohli as a cricketer will come from his success in Test cricket: Rahul Dravid

0

Former India skipper Rahul Dravid has said that Virat Kohli understands that the real respect for him as a cricketer will come through success in the longest format of the game. Dravid, popularly known as ”The Wall”, also said that Test batsmanship has become exciting to watch now as batters play aggressive shots more often.

“I actually believe Test batsmanship has become more exciting than before, the aggressive element of Test batsmanship is going forward, players are playing shots and it is good to see, a good thing for India is Virat Kohli really values Test cricket, he understands that the real respect for him as a cricketer will come from his success in Test cricket,” Dravid told Sanjay Manjrekar in a videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

He also said that defensive batting in cricket is not irrelevant, but added that players can have successful careers without having a good defensive technique.”I don’t think it is becoming irrelevant, maybe the value of defensive batting is not the same as it was a generation ago, it can never become irrelevant, I think you still need to defend your wicket if you want to score suns, I feel now you can survive without a good defensive technique in cricket,” Dravid said.

“Today, you do not need to have a good Test career to have a successful career, look at the best players in the world today, a lot of them have a good defensive technique and they can play out difficult periods of the game,” he addedThe 47-year-old Dravid also said that all young players want to represent their country in all three formats during their initial days, but eventually, they become realistic as time passes by.

“I would say in my interaction with the younger players, everyone’s hero is someone who has succeeded in all formats of the game. I think all players start off wanting to play all formats, but then guys get a little realistic about their careers, superstars of the game will still want to play to all formats of the game,” Dravid said.

Dravid is the only player in the history of cricket to be involved in two 300-plus ODI partnerships. He played 164 Tests, 344 ODIs and one T20I for India. Dravid had announced his retirement from international cricket in March 2012.He finished his career with 48 international centuries.

Dinesh Karthik, the veteran wicket-keeper batsman from India, also featured on ‘Cricket Connected’ and talked about Dhoni. During the conversation, Karthik said, “In 2003 or 2004 when I went for my first (India) A tour with him, he was pretty much an easy-going, chill, relaxed character that’s what you see as well.

“The only difference you see is a lot more white hair now, but inside, he’s pretty calm.”Karthik further added, “I haven’t seen him angry that often or I haven’t seen him express his anger explicitly outside too often. So, he’s been pretty much the same.”

153 healthcare professionals in Telangana test positive

0

As many as 153 healthcare professionals in Telangana have tested positive for Covid-19, the state government said on Monday.

None of the affected is in critical condition and they are all recovering.

This was stated by officials during a meeting convened by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao to review the covid situation.

They alleged that some people are trying to demoralize the healthcare personnel by stating that doctors and other medical staff were getting affected by Covid-19.

The government said healthcare personnel across the world were getting affected while treating Covid-19 patients and this was not happening only in Telangana. It pointed out that 480 healthcare professionals in AIIMS Delhi were infected.

Health department officials and experts said that the government hospitals have the capacity to treat any number of Covid patients. They said the government was ready with infrastructure and equipment to treat Covid patients.

The meeting observed that some individuals and media houses were running a false campaign creating confusion among people.

They expressed a doubt that there may be some conspiracy behind this malicious propaganda. They clarified that in Gandhi Hospital where there is a capacity to treat more than 2,000 patients, only 247 Covid patients are there. Some vested interests are spreading rumors that the Gandhi Hospital is overflowing with the Covid patients.

They said since some people have filed the PILs in the court, they were made to make rounds around the court and it was creating problems for them to offer medical services to the needy. They said it was not possible to conduct COVID tests on all those who died and the High Court’s direction in this regard cannot be implemented. They urged the state government to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The CM clarified that every individual should be cautious and should not worry unnecessarily about the corona. He said there are no symptoms to many people who have the Corona, but a small number of those who are having other diseases are falling seriously sick. The government is taking all measures to contain the virus. But yet the same time, people should follow personal hygiene, take the necessary precautions. The CM declared that even if the Coronavirus cases are large in number, the government is ready to offer the treatment. He said according to ICMR guidelines, those patients who are in serious condition were treated in the hospitals, those asymptomatic patients are treated at home, the CM said.

Meanwhile, Telangana on Monday reported 92 Covid-19 positive cases, taking the state’s tally to 3,742. With five more fatalities, the death toll rose to 142.

Beyonce: Entertainment business is still very sexist

0

Popstar Beyonce Knowles says the entertainment business is still very sexist and male-dominated.

The icon made a powerful statement on sexism in the industry and the Black Lives Matter movement during YouTube’s “Dear Class of 2020” virtual graduation, reports variety.com.

She said she had to carve her path to success. She said the process was “terrifying”, but building her own company was a major turning point in her life. “I know how hard it is to step out and bet on yourself,” she pointed out.

“The entertainment business is still very sexist. It’s still very male-dominated and as a woman, I did not see enough female role models given the opportunity to what I knew I had to do — to run my label, and management company, to direct my films and produce my tours that meant ownership, owning my masters, owning my art, owning my future and writing my own story. Not enough Black women had a seat at the table. So I had to go and chop down that wood and build my own table. Then I had to invite the best there was to have a seat. That meant hiring women, men outsiders, underdogs, people that were overlook and waiting to be seen,” she said.

She explained how race and gender play a big role in the industry.

“Many of the best creatives and business people, who although supremely qualified and talented, were turned down over and over as executives at major corporations because they were female or because of racial disparity. And I’ve been very proud to provide them with a place at my table. One of the main purposes of my art for many years has been dedicated to showing the beauty of Black people to the world, our history, our profundity, and the value of Black lives. I’ve tried my best to pull down the veil of appeasement to those who may feel uncomfortable with our excellence,” she said.

The star continued: “To the young women, our future leaders, know that you’re about to make the world turn. I see you. You are everything the world needs. Make those power moves. Be excellent. And to the young kings, lean into your vulnerability and redefine masculinity. Lead with heart. There are so many different ways to be brilliant. I believe you and every human being is born with a masterful gift. Don’t let the world make you feel that you have to look a certain way to be brilliant. And no you don’t have to speak a certain way to be brilliant. But you do have to spread your gift around the planet in a way that is authentically you.”

“To all those who feel different. If you’re part of a group that’s called ‘other,’ a group that does not get the chance to be center stage, build your own stage and make them see you. Your queerness is beautiful, your blackness is beautiful. Your compassion, your understanding, your fight for people who may be different from you, is beautiful. I hope you continue to go into the world and show them that you will never stop being yourself. That it’s your time now, make them see you,” she added.

Addressing the pandemic and the ongoing unrest in the US, she said: “Congratulations to the class of 2020, you have arrived here in the middle of a global crisis, a racial pandemic and worldwide expression of outrage at the senseless killing of yet another unarmed Black human being. And you still made it, we’re so proud of you.”

She went on to highlight the importance of Black Lives Matter protests.

“Thank you for using your collective voice and letting the worlds know that Black lives matter. The killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and so many others have left us all broken. It has left the entire country searching for answers. We’ve seen that our collective hearts, when put to positive action, could start the wheels of change. Real change has started with you, this new generation of high school and college graduates who we celebrate today,” she said.

Mahima Chaudhry opens up on her horrific accident

0

Actress Mahima Chaudhry has opened up on the horrific accident she suffered years ago that left her shattered mentally, and fighting for her life.

“Then, I was working for Ajay Devgn and Kajol’s home production film ‘Dil Kya Kare’ with Prakash Jha. During that, in Bengaluru, while on my way to the studio, I had a massive accident where a truck hit my car, and the glass of my car went into my face mostly,” Mahima said in an exclusive interview to pinkvilla.com.

She continued: “I thought I was dying, and at that point, no one even helped me get to the hospital. It is only after reaching the hospital, much later, when my mother came, Ajay came and they went to discuss. I got up and saw my face in the mirror and saw the horror. When they did the surgery on me, they took out 67 glass pieces.”

Today, memories of the incident makes her emotional. “I get teary-eyed when I talk about it. I had to be stitched, stapled and had to be indoors and not be exposed to sunlight. My room was completely blacked out. I didn’t look at myself; there was no mirror. Lights which had UV rays light couldn’t be there, so that the marks don’t stay,” the website recalled her as saying.

The incident damaged her career, of course. “There were a lot of movies that I had lined up for myself during that time, and I had to let go. I didn’t want people to know because at that time, people were not that supportive. If at that time, I had discussed it and said that I had cut myself like this, they would have said… ‘oh, iska toh chehra kharab ho gaya (her face has been destroyed), let’s sign someone else’,” she told pinkvilla.com.

Rajasthan launches portal to connect workers with jobs in state

0

The Rajasthan government has launched a centralized manpower repository ‘Raj Kaushal’, which is the first of its kind portal in the country to connect migrant workers with job opportunities in their home state, officials said on Monday.

This centralized system ensures jobs for migrants which will also help to start industries in the state, they said.

Along with nearly 13 lakh migrants who have come back home to the state following the Covid crisis, the portal has a database of more than 50 lakh people categorized by their skillset and work experience. It also holds information of over 11 lakh registered business institutions in the state that can be a potential employer for these workers. Many of these businesses are open for hiring as many of their previous workers from other states have returned home.

“It is the futuristic vision of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, that along with addressing the issue of employment for migrants, the state has developed a centralized system for providing all citizens better access for job opportunities available in the state,” state Labour Minister Tikaram Jully said.

The pandemic and subsequent lockdown disrupted the industrial process and job scenario across the country. Raj Kaushal, while intending to restore a balance in the state, also holds possibilities for generating information and trends that can help the government draft better skill and industrial policies, officials said.

“Raj Kaushal app acts as a bridge between industry and laborers, to improve the availability of opportunities and empower the economy. Government of Rajasthan will ensure that the demands of the industry will be met,” state Labour and Employment Secretary Niraj K. Pawan said.

The workers can log in using a mobile phone generated OTP, and the data of migrant laborers filled in form-4 while entering the state is being regularly updated in the system and will be available on the registration page after OTP validation. In order to make the portal, even more user-friendly, the site has been designed in Hindi.

The portal has details of 13,13,679 migrants workers, 22,33,233 registered construction workers, 3,37,724 Rajasthan Skill and Livelihood Development Corporation-trained individuals and 1,21,253 ITI-trained individuals, amongst others. There are 11,18,810 employers also registered on the portal.

Tisca feels unlocking India is a ‘true test’

0

Actress Tisca Chopra says the unlocking of India after over two months of lockdown will be a true test, because this may be a time that demands maximum self-discipline from all.

Tisca took to Instagram, where she shared a photograph of herself in a green face mask, glasses, and a green kurta. The image seems to have been taken in an elevator.

She captioned the image: “Unlock diaries, Day 1. We aren’t, as a country, known for being self-disciplined. On the other hand, we have a history of deep spirituality, where deepest self-discipline has led to enlightenment. This may be one of the only times that we may be required to exercise maximum self-discipline. A true test.”

She emphasized on stepping outside when necessary.

“Doctor, friends across hospitals are saying they are overwhelmed and exhausted. Hospital beds are full, ICUs are crammed with cases, ambulances are taking 12 to 24 hours to arrive. This is not the time for a walk at Juhu beach or to step into a mall. Yes we have been cooped up, but some more, a little more I implore you,” she said.

“Unlocking is an economic decision, not a medical one. I hope you will be wise.. much love to all of you.. stay safe, stay in. Please. Love T.”

The businesses will, however, have to follow stringent guidelines issued by the Health Ministry to control the spread of the highly viral disease.

Dhoni had great hand-eye coordination & mental strength, says Taibu

0

Mahendra Singh Dhoni had a very different technique to wicketkeeping and batting but it was his hand-eye coordination and mental toughness that made him what he is, feels former Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu.

“…The first time I saw Dhoni, if I’m to be honest…he had come with the India A side. I thought Karthik was more natural than Dhoni. And still in keeping, he is more natural…even in batting he is more natural,” Taibu said on Fan Play-Sports Ruler ‘Inside Out With Baggs’ on YouTube channel.

“Now, the way he (Dhoni) keeps his hands are not always together like you always have the little fingers together… when he catches his hands are always not like that…

“But he always manages to catch the ball and whip the bails in a flash with a very different technique…very different and odd technique.

“Same thing about his batting…different technique. But great hand-eye coordination. But I don’t think it’s only his hand-eye coordination but probably his mental toughness.

“Normally if you don’t look the part, so to speak, it’s easy for coaches to just put you aside. But Dhoni backs that up with statistics,” Taibu added.

Stumper Taibu also said he had learnt a lot from Indian greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid among others about how to train.

The 2020 IPL is supposed to see the return of Dhoni to cricketing action as the wicket-keeper is on a break since playing in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup where India lost to New Zealand.

If this year’s T20 World Cup — slated to be held in October-November in Australia — is postponed, it will open a window for the BCCI to host the IPL.

Telangana allows resumption of film shootings

The Telangana government on Monday permitted the resumption of shooting for films and television programs.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao signed the file, allowing filmmakers and television program producers to resume the shootings.

Facebook pays Rs 23.8 lakh to Indian security researcher for bug alert

0

It is raining bug bounties for Indian ethical hackers and cybersecurity researchers as now, an Ahmedabad-based security researcher Bipin Jitiya has won Rs 23.8 lakh ($31,500) from Facebook for identifying a bug in its social networking platform and a third-party business intelligence portal.

Jitiya, 26, identified the web security vulnerability in internal blind Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) in the source code of a publicly accessible endpoint, built using tools from MicroStrategy, that performed custom data collection and content generation.

MicroStrategy has partnered with Facebook on data analytics projects for several years. Jitiya reported the bug to the MicroStrategy’s security team, who acknowledged it, saying the issue has been mitigated.

“I have always aimed in finding bugs in Facebook because it is the biggest social network on Earth with best-in-class security features in place. This time, they have awarded me with $31,500 for finding a critical bug. I have identified bugs in their systems in the past too,” Jitiya told IANS on Monday.

In a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) attack, the attacker can abuse functionality on the server to read or update internal resources. In typical SSRF attacks, the attacker might cause the server to make a connection back to itself, or to other web-based services within the organization’s infrastructure, or to external third-party systems.

“I created a scenario that shows how sensitive information leakage may be useful for launching specific attacks like path traversal and Server Side Request Forgery (SSRF). If an attacker is able to learn the internal IP addresses of the network, it is much easier for him/her to target systems in the internal network,” explained Jitiya.

The bug has now been fixed.

“When I first got this bug on Facebook server I tried to convert it to RCE (remote code execution) but, unfortunately, they implemented good security measures. However, I made a total of $31500 ($1,000 + $30,000 + $500) from this vulnerability,” he informed.

On a question whether he would join Facebook cybersecurity research team if given an offer, Jitiya told IANS: “I would like to stay in India and work as a security researcher for Indian firms. I am not a bug bounty hacker”.

Last month, a 27-year-old Indian security researcher Bhavuk Jain grabbed $100,000 (over Rs 75.5 lakh) from Apple for discovering a now-patched Zero Day vulnerability in the Sign in with Apple account authentication.

The Zero Day vulnerability could have allowed a hacker to break into an Apple user’s account who log into third-party apps like like Dropbox, Spotify, Airbnb and Giphy (now acquired by Facebook) and more.

“Indian ethical hackers and security researchers have come of age, and are now creating headlines the world over with their unmatched skills,” said Jitiya.

Malls open but shops closed in some UP districts

0

Shopping malls opened on Monday in Lucknow but shops inside the malls remained closed.

The Adarsh Vyapar Mandal said that majority of the shops in malls did not reopen on Monday in support of their demands.

Adarsh Vyapar Mandal state President, Sanjay Gupta, told IANS that the shop keepers wanted the mall owners to waive off the rent and common area maintenance fee for the lockdown period.

He said that shops would remain closed until their demands are met.
