Maharashtra Minister seeks action over Kerala elephant killing

0

Terming it as a ‘blot’ on humanity, Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad on Thursday urged the Kerala Government to initiate stringent legal action against those involved in the killing of a pregnant elephant.

In a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Awhad sought strong legal action to book the culprits “who committed this heinous murder” under the Cruelty to Animals Act and ensure the strictest punishment to them.

“As an animal lover, I feel this is a blot on humanity, ironically, in a state where elephants are worshipped,” Awhad pointed out.

He said all look up to Kerala as an epitome of social justice and equality, and also studied how these virtues have been further strengthened under Vijayan’s leadership.

The letter by the minister — who is a senior Nationalist Congress Party leader — came against the backdrop of the barbaric killing of a pregnant pachyderm in a Kerala village recently.

Citing reports, Awhad said that a few days ago, the famished elephant had gone to a village hoping to get some food, but the villagers served her live firecrackers hidden inside pineapples, which burst in her mouth, grievously injuring her tongue and mouth.

Though she did not become violent, she displayed the presence of mind to rush to a nearby pond hoping the water would heal her injuries and remained there for around three days.

However, she succumbed on May 27 after a long battle of struggle with her agony, stunning animal lovers around the country.

Union Minister of Environment and Forests Prakash Javadekar said in a tweet: “Central Government has taken a very serious note of the killing of an elephant in Malappuram, #Kerala. We will not leave any stone unturned to investigate properly and nab the culprit(s). This is not an Indian culture to feed firecrackers and kill.”

T20 cricket set to return to Australia with fans in attendance

0

Competitive cricket is set to return to Australia as a T20 tournament in Darwin is set to kickstart the sport which has been suspended worldwide since March due to coronavirus pandemic.

According to cricket.com.au, the tournament will feature the seven Darwin Premier Grade clubs, with the eighth team an Invitational XI made up of the best players from the NT’s ‘Asia Cup’ competition played between locals within the Asian community.

The 15 matches of the round-robin styled tournament will be played between June 6-8, with the venues being Marrara Cricket Ground, Gardens Oval and Cazaly’s Oval.

The report also stated that up to 200 fans will be allowed to attend matches as there has been no active COVID-19 positive case in the area since May 21.

The ban on use of saliva on match balls has been a point of contention as according to Darwin Cricket Management chairman Lachlan Baird, they are still waiting for a firm answer from Cricket Australia.

“Cricket Australia is still very strong at the moment that they will not necessarily follow the ICC direction that sweat can be used and any wax applicator will not be banned,” Baird told the NT News.

“They are still exploring that. Fortunately, it should not be too much of an issue with our T20 competition this weekend.

“But the week after when 50-over cricket begins we will need a formal decision on what we are going to do — either through wax applicators with Kookaburra or hopefully following the ICC and the United Kingdom, who say using sweat and not saliva to shine the ball is an acceptable risk,” it added.

Cricket Australia is slated to host the men’s T20 World Cup from October 18 to November 15. However, because of the outbreak of coronavirus, there are doubts over the tournament.

India-Aus ties have always been close: Modi on summit

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed his exuberance in joining the India-Australia Virtual Summit and said that people-to-people relations of both the countries are strong and the future looks bright.

After both India and Australia accepted the US offer to be part of the expanded G7 meet on China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Scott Morrison held a virtual summit to strengthen their bilateral strategic relationship. The summit began at 11 a.m.

PM Modi tweeted, “Glad to be joining the first India-Australia Virtual Summit with you, PM Scott Morrison. India-Australia ties have always been close. As vibrant democracies, from Commonwealth to Cricket to even Cuisine, our people-to-people relations are strong and the future is bright!”

The Prime Minister replied to a tweet of his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison in which the latter said that he is “looking forward to catching up” with Narendra Modi for the first ever Australia-India virtual summit.

Officials in New Delhi argue that as two democratic nations, India and Australia have developed an understanding of each other’s perspectives on regional and global issues.

“We have a shared approach to a free open, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. This has led to convergence of mutual interest in many areas. The relations are strong not only at the bilateral level, but also at the plurilateral level,” an official said.

Australia supports India’s membership of the NSG and an expanded UNSC. It has also backed India’s demand that Pakistan must take meaningful action against terror groups operating from its soil. Besides, it co-sponsored a UNSC resolution to declare Azhar Masood a global terrorist. Australia holds the view that recent developments with regard to J&K are India’s internal matter.

Officials in Delhi point out that the two nations have much in common, underpinned by shared values of pluralistic, Westminster-style democracies, Commonwealth traditions, the long-standing people-to-people ties, and sporting links.

“Our economies have many complementarities with potential to enhance bilateral trade and investment,” an official said.

Twitter CEO Dorsey says download Signal as US protests gain steam

0

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has pitched for downloading encrypted messaging app Signal that rivals Telegram and Facebook-owned WhatsApp as protests in the US gain momentum.

The signal became one of the top 10 most downloaded social apps on iOS for the first time in the US on Wednesday, according to data from leading mobile data and analytics company App Annie.

“Download Signal,” tweeted Dorsey who took the game-changing decision to flag US President Donald Trump’s controversial tweet on glorifying violence in the wake of the death of African-American George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25.

After Donald Trump threatened Twitter and other social media firms with an executive order, Dorsey said the fact-checking action against Trump tweets was his duty.

While Twitter put out a “public interest notice” on Trump tweet for violating the platform’s policies about glorifying violence, Facebook refused to take action when the tweet was cross-posted to its platform.

According to a Vox report, Signal has been downloaded 121,000 times in the US since May 25, according to Apptopia.

Community safety app Citizen has also been downloaded 234,000 times. Citizen was the fourth most downloaded iOS app of any kind, according to App Annie. The citizen was temporarily removed from the Google Play store on Wednesday but has been restored.

“Signal was the eighth most downloaded social networking app on Tuesday, and ranked around the top 100 for apps overall,” the report mentioned.

Privacy centric messaging app Signal in February said it was mulling to go mainstream now and has put the $50 million infusions from WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton – who left Facebook over differences with CEO Mark Zuckerberg — to good use.

Moxie Marlinspike — who launched Signal — has always talked about making encrypted communications easy enough for anyone to use.

“The major transition Signal has undergone is from a three-person small effort to something that is now a serious project with the capacity to do what is required to build software in the world today,” Marlinspike was quoted as saying in a Wired report.

The investment by the WhatsApp co-founder Acton has enabled the team to add features that also attract regular folks looking for an alternative to WhatsApp and Telegram.

Distress of teachers and a novel idea of Hyderabad NGO

0

The resumption of economic activity with easing of lockdown has provided a breather to some sections of professionals reeling under the lockdown for over two months but one section which is yet to see any hope are teachers of private schools.

With uncertainty continuing over the re-opening of schools, there are no hopes of an early end to the hardships of thousands of teachers.

While teachers of government-run schools are not badly impacted as they were at least paid 50 percent salaries and they are sure to get the deducted salaries in the future, the teachers in private schools, especially those in small unaided schools are the worst affected.

Drawing meagre salaries between Rs 4,000 and Rs 12,000, it is a hand-to-mouth existence for many. Most of them have not received salaries for three months. While dignity held them back from reaching out for help, there were also instances where some had to approach the NGOs for food ration to save themselves and their families from starvation.

The management of some schools showed magnanimity to pay salaries for March and made part payment for April but teachers in the majority of schools have not received salaries for three months.

“We cannot tell anyone about our distress and there is no support from the government or anyone for people like us,” said Narasing Nayak a teacher at New St. Maria High School, Falaknuma in Hyderabad.

With a salary of Rs 15,000, he is the only earning member of my family and has to also take care of an ailing father. With no salary since March and no money for food and medicines, he had to approach a private financier to borrow on 5 percent interest.

Syed Mohsin Ali and his wife work at Zahra High School in Hyderabad together earning about Rs 15,000 per month. Ali’s wife is afflicted with polio and they have a seven-month old child born premature. Both wife and child need regular medication. They have not received salaries since March and the family is surviving on hand loans taken from neighbours.

“The management clearly told us that they are not in a position to pay the salary. They said you are free to continue or look for a job in some other school,” said a lady teacher working for a school with multiple branches in the city.

It’s not only the teachers who are passing through tough times but the school managements are also going through a crisis. The lockdown also came as a bolt from blue for many school managements. Like every year, they were hoping to collect the fee dues from defaulters before the examinations in April. Since the examinations for classes from first to ninth standard are held in April, the schools issue the hall tickets to students only after they clear the last term fee or the dues.

With the government promoting the students to the next class without conducting the exams, the schools have almost lost hopes of receiving the fee dues.

With the state government issuing orders that the schools should not demand the fee, the managements are struggling to pay for the rents, security and maintenance of the school buildings.

“We entirely depend on the fees collected to pay our teachers. But with the sudden Lockdown no fees were collected since March and we could not pay our teachers who are all facing acute financial distress. We can see their suffering but are totally helpless to do anything,” said Jhansi Jaison, Principal, New St. Maria High School, Falaknuma.

With the lockdown resulting in job-loss in different sectors or badly impacting the incomes of low-income groups, there are also apprehensions of a drop-out whenever the next academic year begins.

A city-based NGO Confederation of Voluntary Organisation (COVA) has come out with an innovative idea to help the teachers and ensure that the students who might be forced to discontinue the education are retained.

Under the scheme, COVA will pay Rs 10,000 to a teacher and will in turn make the management of that school to provide free education to two students for every teacher supported.

“This will be a win win situation for teachers, students, parents, school managements and the society as teachers will get at least part of their salary to survive the coming months with dignity, students from deprived backgrounds will be able to continue their education in this time of acute economic stress for their parents, the burden on the management to pay the full salary of the teachers will be reduced and massive dropout of students could be curtailed,” said Dr Mazher Hussain, Executive Director of COVA.

COVA, which works with 100 private schools in Hyderabad, plans to support at least 1,000 teachers from 60 schools for this programme by raising Rs 1 crore through donations and grants.

Mazher Hussain said COVA would enter into a MoU with schools to be covered under the programme.

“A selection committee will be formed with 3 representatives of COVA and 2 representatives of the school to select students of the school for free study for a year. Care would be taken by the committee to ensure that students from 6th to 10th classes who are good in studies but likely to drop out due to economic constraints are selected and retained,” he said.

He suggested that organisations and groups initiate similar programmes in their respective localities, towns, cities and villages. COVA is ready to provide them free assistance or guidance required.

During the lockdown COVA started providing subsistence support of Rs 5000 each to 114 teachers from eight member schools of COVA through direct bank transfers.

Apple tracks iPhones stolen from its stores during US protests

0

Apple is tracking several iPhones that were stolen from its retail stores during the protests in the US over the death of African-American George Floyd.

Thieves who stole iPhones from Apple retail locations in New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Washington and Philadelphia were surprised to see on-screen messages that read: “This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted”.

Several disappointed thieves went on to social media, posting about how iPhones they made off with were blocked.

Apple was in the process of opening more than 100 stores in the US closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“On the device was a message alerting the user that the iPhone is disabled and should be returned to the store. It’s not clear if Apple or law enforcement plans to do anything with the data it collects,” reports the Motley Fool.

It’s been long reported that Apple has a hidden software that disables an iPhone if it’s stolen from one of its stores. It has now been proven.

Apple Stores in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington have been the target of vandalism and looting during recent protests over Floyd’s death.

Other retailers like Target, Walmart and Amazon’s Whole Foods have also shut stores or shorten working hours.

Apple managed to reopen nearly 256 retail stores out of more than 500 worldwide, as it aims to safely restart operations.

Cabinet approves EGoS, PDCs to attract investments

0

To attract investments into the country, the Union Cabinet has given its approval for setting up of an “Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) and Project Development Cells (PDCs) in Central government ministries or departments.

Accordingly, the new mechanism will reinforce India’s vision of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25.

“Government is determined to put in place an investment-friendly eco-system that strongly supports the domestic investor as well as FDI and will boost the economy manifold,” the Centre said in an official communique.

As per the communique, in the midst of ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, India is presented with an opportunity to attract FDI inflows into the country, especially from large companies which seek to diversify their investments into new geographies and mitigate risks.

“Also, ramping up production across product lines will help to serve big markets in the US, EU, China and elsewhere,” the communique said.

“The proposal aims to take advantage of these opportunities from the global economic situation to make India among the largest players in the global value chain.”

In terms of the mechanism, an EGoS has been approved to provide support and facilitation to investors for investing in India and to boost growth in key sectors of the economy.

Similarly, a Project Development Cell (PDC) is also approved for the development of investible projects, in coordination between the Central and state governments, and in turn, increase the FDI inflows.

Air passenger traffic likely to fall by 45-50% in FY21: ICRA

0

Air passenger traffic is likely to fall by 45-50 percent in FY21, credit rating agency ICRA said on Wednesday.

In a research note, ICRA said that passenger traffic at airports will remain under pressure for H1FY2021, with some recovery likely only in H2FY2021, on a full-year basis.

“The aviation infrastructure industry is amongst the most severely impacted sectors to bear the brunt of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the setback on the industry is expected to be substantial in the near term,” the note said.

As per the ICRA note, the decline in air travel globally pursuant to spread of the pandemic and subsequent drastic precautionary measures undertaken by the Centre leading to pan India lockdown and near closure of airport operations has led to a sharp contraction in air traffic in Q4 FY2020 and negligible passenger traffic in the month of April 2020 and May 2020.

“Although most airports resumed operations by the fag end of May 2020 for domestic travel, with restrictions on the number of flights as well as passengers, the resumption of international commercial operations remains stalled,” the note said.

“There have been extremely few international flights, limited largely to operations to bring back stranded Indians or repatriation of foreign citizens.”

According to Anupama Arora, Sector Head & Vice President – Corporate Ratings, ICRA: “With almost negligible air traffic already in the first two months of the current fiscal, possible dilemma amongst travelers to travel amidst continuing pandemic fears and gradual addition of capacities by airlines, passenger traffic at airports is expected to remain under pressure for H1FY2021, with some recovery only likely in the second half.”

“As a result, passenger traffic is estimated to witness sharp Y-o-Y decline of 45-50 percent in FY2021.”

In FY19, airports in India handled around 345 million passengers, driven by strong growth, especially in domestic traffic.

The top five privatized airports in India developed under the Public-Private Partnership model have led from the front, accounting for 55-60 percent of this passenger traffic.

As for the recovery, ICRA said the same will be contingent on the abatement of the pandemic, with international travel primarily dependent on lifting of travel restrictions by various countries.

“This is likely to happen only in phases. Additionally, availability of viable load factors across specific routes for the airlines would be another consideration for airlines to resume traffic directed towards various destinations,” the note said.

The rating agency thus expects the traffic recovery in a meaningful manner only towards FY2022 and that FY2019 passenger traffic levels are likely to be surpassed only by FY2023.

“Given the likelihood of weak traffic for a prolonged period and resultant operations conducted at sub-optimal capacities and at the same time necessary to invest in infrastructure to ensure passenger safety and meet preventive requirements against the pandemic, the airports’ profitability and cash flows are likely to remain under pressure in the near term,” ICRA said in the note.

Furthermore, this risk is exacerbated in case of the privatized airports, as most of them are in the midst of undertaking sizeable debt-funded capex to expand capacities.

Avast warns of 3 ‘fleeceware’ apps on Apple App Store

0

Digital security provider Avast on Wednesday said it had discovered and reported three apps to Apple App Store, which overcharge users, do not provide the services they promote, and appear to be “fleeceware”.

The apps are available on the Apple App Store as Beetle VPN, Buckler VPN, and Hat VPN Pro, Avast said.

These three apps have been downloaded over 420K, 271K, and 96K times, respectively, between April 2019 and May 2020, according to data from Sensor Tower, a mobile apps marketing intelligence and insights company.

“Fleeceware apps fall into a gray area, because they are not malicious per se, they simply charge users absurd amounts of money for weekly, monthly or yearly subscriptions for features that should be offered at much lower costs,” Nikolaos Chrysaidos, Head of Mobile Threats & Security at Avast, said in a statement.

“In this case, the VPNs are being sold for $9.99 (USD) a week, when trustworthy VPNs cost ten times less,” Chrysaidos said.

The apps’ all have high ratings, ranging from 4.6 to 4.8, and include enthusiastic reviews, all similarly written, which Avast considers may potentially be fake.

In between the rave reviews, there are a few reviews warning of the scams. The apps’ privacy policies also have very similar language and structure.

Avast said its researchers installed the three apps and successfully purchased subscriptions to each app. However, when they tried to use the VPNs, the apps only provided subscription options again.

After attempting to purchase the subscriptions again, the researchers were notified they already have a subscription and thus were unable to establish a VPN connection using any of the apps.

Let’s treat our animals with love, bring an end to cowardly acts: Kohli

0

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli was among several sportspersons who took to social media to express shock over the inhuman incident where a pregnant elephant was fed pineapple stuffed with firecrackers in Kerala.

“Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let’s treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts,” Kohli said in a tweet from his Twitter handle.

The brutal incident of animal abuse took place in Kerala’s Palakkad district, which resulted in the death of the elephant while standing in a river.

Director of Celebrity and Public Relations, PETA India, Sachin Bangera has been very vocal and celebrities have been replying to his posts, asking him to get the criminals arrested.

“Never understood humans. They revere elephant-God and also abuse elephants by beating, torturing and using them for joyrides,” he tweeted.

Olympian pistol shooter Heena Sidhu wrote, replying to the post: “Not a rocket science…

“This is the Elephant God and this is just plain old elephant. Just like…This is a rich businessman and this one just a plain old migrant labourer or farmer. We all know what to worship and what to abuse.”

Many celebrities both from the world of sports and entertainment shared images and sketches to express their anger and grief.

Ace India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also posted a series of angry faced emoticons on a newsfeed of the same.

The Kerala Forest department has launched a ‘manhunt’ for those responsible for the death of the 15-year-old pregnant wild elephant, said an official.

In another tweet Sachin wrote: “PETA is in touch with @ForestKerala. A case has been registered against unidentified persons under Secs 9 & 51 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. We’ve offered our support and assistance to the forest dept. in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Via @asharmeet02.”

Emma Watson on #BlackoutTuesday backlash

0

Actress Emma Watson has opened up about facing criticism for her tone deaf Black Lives Matter posts, and says she will use her platform to spread awareness about the cause.

It all started on Tuesday when she posted three blank black square posts on Instagram during a social media event, the aim of which was to raise awareness about the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd, reports mirror.co.uk.

The actress was slammed for posting three images instead of one, with many social media users feeling she was paying more attention to the aesthetic of her Instagram page rather than the spirit of the protest.

Watson took to Instagram to address it, and said that she was still trying to learn about racism.

“There is so much racism, both in our past and present, that is not acknowledged nor accounted for. White supremacy is one of the systems of hierarchy and dominance, of exploitation and oppression, that is tightly stitched into society,” she wrote.

“As a white person, I have benefited from this. While we might feel that, as individuals, we’re working hard internally to be anti-racist, we need to work harder externally to actively tackle the structural and institutional racism around us. I’m still learning about the many ways I unconsciously support and uphold a system that is structurally racist,” the actress added.

Watson continued: “Over the coming days, I’ll be using my bio link and Twitter to share links to resources I’ve found useful for my own researching, learning, listening. I see your anger, sadness and pain. I cannot know what this feels like for you but it doesn’t mean I won’t try to.”

The Blackout Tuesday movement was formed to show solidarity with the campaign for justice following the death of George Floyd by sharing a single black square.

Floyd, aged 46, died last week after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, “I can’t breathe”, and “please, I can’t breathe”. Chauvin has been arrested and charged with three-degree murder and manslaughter.

Names that swell in their throats and linger until they can no longer breathe. So let us haunt their dreams and their waking moments alike. Say their names: Ahmaud Arbery. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. Let them see us. Let them hear us. No friends, we have nothing to fear. An army of Egungun warriors walk amongst us. They have tried, and for centuries they have failed to violate us… to silence us. This is not breaking. This is opening. The cracks are windows. The holes are doors. Shine your light through.” – Dr. Fahamu Pecou⁣ ⁣ Say their names #AhmaudArbery #BreonnaTaylor #GeorgeFloyd

Romantic relationships help breast cancer survivors cut stress

0

Breast cancer survivors in romantic relationships who feel happy and satisfied with their partners may be at lower risk for a host of health problems, says a study.

The findings, published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, suggest that women who were satisfied in their relationships also reported lower psychological stress – and these two factors were associated with lower markers for inflammation in their blood.

Keeping inflammation at bay is the key to promoting health generally, and especially in breast cancer survivors, researchers said.

“Our findings suggest that this close partnership can boost their bond as a couple and also promote survivors’ health even during a very stressful time when they’re dealing with cancer,” said study lead author Rosie Shroutv from the Ohio State University in the US.

For the findings, the 139 women with an average age of 55 completed self-report questionnaires and provided blood samples at three visits: upon recruitment within one to three months of their cancer diagnosis and during two follow-up visits six and 18 months after their cancer treatment ended.

One survey assessed relationship satisfaction by asking the women to report their degree of happiness, the level of warmth and comfort they felt with their partner, how rewarding the relationship was and their overall satisfaction.

The other questionnaire was used to evaluate their level of perceived psychological stress over the previous week.

Researchers analyzed blood samples for levels of four proteins that promote inflammation throughout the body even when there is no need for an immune response.

This kind of chronic inflammation is linked to numerous health problems, including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the frailty and functional decline that can accompany ageing.

The findings showed a clear trend in the women as a group: The more satisfied they felt about their romantic relationships, the lower their perceived stress and the lower their inflammation.

The design of the study allowed researchers to compare the group of women to each other and also gauge changes in each woman individually.

“This gave us a unique perspective – we found that when a woman was particularly satisfied with her relationship, she had lower stress and lower inflammation than usual – lower than her own average,” Shrout said.

“At a specific visit, if she was satisfied with her partner, her own inflammation was lower at that visit than at a different visit when she was less satisfied,” she added.

The research shows the importance of fostering survivors’ relationships. It could promote their health over the long run,” the authors wrote.

Balakrishna’s candid interview has many answers from Balayya

Balakrishna’s candid interview has many answers from Balayya but also left many questions in the end as the Nandamuri hero did not want to reveal names. Balayya at one moment said ‘give respect and take respect’ and ‘I never talk to them, I never respect them’. So who are those heroes who disrespected and ignored Balayya and what’s the story behind it?

In the interview when asked about multi-starrer plans, Balayya gave an apathetic look saying the idea would be better with smaller heroes. He also mentioned about few incidents where he approached two heroes and they never cared to respond, but again tried to invite him for their business events.

It is heard that Balakrishna approached two star heroes for ‘important’ roles in NTR biopic to represent two other great heroes of NTR’s era, but the latter two turned it down due to reasons only known to them. While Balakrishna played his father NTR, he is said to have made vain trials to bring on the ‘two’ heroes to do the same. The most anticipated movie too could not yield great results which also left Balayya more disgruntled for the ‘refusal’ from the two heroes, though it might to one of the reasons for the movie failure.

So, Balayya appeared to have lost interest for multi-starrer and he even agreed that there were bad multi-starrers NTR-ANR, concluding that a great story like Sholay or bigger could work. Balayya did not rule out a chance of a multi-starrer with Tarak or Kalyan Ram, but no one knows if that could happen.
