Actor-politician Manoj Tiwari has been replaced as chief of the BJP in Delhi

Actor-politician Manoj Tiwari has been replaced as chief of the BJP in Delhi. Adesh Kumar Gupta will take over, the ruling party said today.Adesh Gupta, a former North Delhi Municipal Corporation mayor, is everything that Manoj Tiwari was not – a low profile, old hand of the party in the capital. Many interpret his appointment as a sign that the BJP is once again looking for its core support group in the capital — the Vaishya community.

Manoj Tiwari, who was appointed Delhi BJP president in 2016, was said to be on borrowed time since the party’s disastrous performance in the Delhi assembly election in February.Sources say he had offered to resign immediately after the Delhi defeat but was asked to continue until an alternative was found.

The BJP called it a routine move and also announced changes in other states — Vishnu Deo Sai has been appointed chief in Chhattisgarh and S Tikendra Singh in Manipur.”I can only say that I will fulfill my responsibility with honesty and dedication,” Adesh Gupta told NDTV.

“In Delhi, we need to work on the ground level. We need to reach more people and create a more all-embracing organisation, so that we can enhance our voter base,” he added.Mr Tiwari, a Bhojpuri singing star-turned-politician, was always perceived as an “outsider” in the faction-driven Delhi BJP and was seen to have been unable to effectively counter the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) despite his street-fighting skills and non-stop sparring.

A mobile application has been launched to help COVID-19 patients: Arvind Kejriwal

0

A mobile application has been launched to help COVID-19 patients in Delhi track hospital beds and ventilators, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said this afternoon. The app – “Delhi Corona” – comes amid a worrying spike in coronavirus cases in the national capital, which has logged over 20,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

“The cases are on a rise… but we need not panic. We have made sufficient arrangements. We are launching an app today which will give everyone the status of hospital beds and ventilator availability in Delhi,” the Chief Minister said during a video conference. The app is available on Google Play and all the information can also be accessed on the website – delhifightscorona.in/beds. It will be updated twice a day – at 10 am and at 6 pm.

Delhi is third on the list of worst-affected states after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The total number of the containment zones jumped to 147 on Monday with 25 new zones formed in the last 48 hours.

Warning the hospitals yet again against denying beds to the COVID-19 patients, Mr Kejriwal today announced a helpline number – 1031- which can also be used to get status of the COVID-19 beds in Delhi.

“If you go to a hospital and you see that they are denying you a bed, please call on the helpline number – 1031. You will be connected straight to the office of the health secretary and they will assist you,” he said.

Coronavirus triggered a crisis in several countries across the world due to lack of proper health infrastructure, Mr Kejriwal said today, repeating the assertion that his government is “four steps ahead” of the highly infectious illness.

“That being said, I say this again – that not every COVID-19 patient needs a bed. Delhi recorded more than 20,000 cases, but only around 2,600 are in hospitals currently; around 6,000-7000 are recuperating at their homes. If a doctor tells you that you illness is not severe, please listen to him. Those recovering at their homes will be helped by our special teams,” he said.

The national capital on Monday sealed its borders, including those with Uttar Pradesh’s Noida and Ghaziabad and Haryana’s Gurgaon, for a week, in order to give hospitals in the city time to come to grips with the coronavirus crisis.

A Urologist died on Friday after being treated for COVID-19

0

A Wuhan doctor who worked with coronavirus whistleblower Li Wenliang died of the virus last week, state media reported Tuesday, becoming China’s first COVID-19 fatality in weeks.Hu Weifeng, a urologist at Wuhan Central Hospital, died on Friday after being treated for COVID-19 and allied issues for more than four months, state broadcaster CCTV said.

He is the sixth doctor from Wuhan Central Hospital to have died from the virus, which emerged in the central Chinese city late last year.As Wuhan, the Chinese city where the COVID-19 pandemic began, revs up a massive testing campaign, some residents crowding the test centres expressed concern on Saturday that the very act of getting tested could expose them to the coronavirus.

Cases have dwindled dramatically from the peak in mid-February as the country appears to have brought the outbreak largely under control. The official death toll in the country of 1.4 billion people stands at 4,634 — well below the number of fatalities in less populous nations.Wuhan Central Hospital has yet to give a formal statement on Hu’s death. In early February it said some 68 staff members had contracted coronavirus.

Hu’s condition became a national concern after Chinese media showed images of him with his skin turned black due to liver damage.Fellow doctor Yi Fan showed similar symptoms, but recovered and has since been discharged from hospital.

The death of their colleague Li Wenliang in February triggered a national outpouring of grief and rage against the government as he documented his final days on social media. The 34-year-old ophthalmologist was reprimanded by authorities after he warned colleagues about the virus in late December.

Beijing has since named him a national martyr, but suppressed much of the dissent and criticism sparked by his death.Other medical whistleblowers at Wuhan Central Hospital — including emergency unit director Ai Fen — have told Chinese media they were punished by authorities for speaking out.

China has not released a complete figure of the number of medical worker deaths from Covid-19, but at least 34 medics have been awarded posthumous honours by health authorities. In February the National Health Commission said some 3,387 health workers had been infected.

Migrant workers going back on trains vow not to return

0

Rajkumari, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda has arrived at the New Delhi railway station along with all the belongings of her rented house to go back to her native place. She says she will never return as there is no work here.

However, Rajkumari’s woes don’t end here, as she has a waiting ticket for the train leaving for Varanasi.

Speaking to IANS, she said, “We don’t have any work here. And as there is no income we are unable to pay the rent.”

“We are not going to come back to Delhi and it is the reason why we are going back to our village with all our belongings,” she said.

She said that her husband works as a daily laborer and now as they don’t have any work so there is no need to stay back here.

She said that she will go back to her village and will do farming in the fields as the season of sowing rice is coming.

Rajkumari is traveling back to her village along with her husband and two children and has booked the ticket on Tuesday morning from the New Delhi passenger reservation counter.

Similar is the condition of Mukesh a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria. He said that he will not return to Delhi for at least one and a half years.

Speaking to IANS, he said, “I have to go to Deoria with my belongings, and I have been running to ticket counters to book a ticket. But I am unable to get a ticket.”

He said that he was tired of running from one counter to another counter. “I am getting tired as the heat is unbearable and we are sitting on the main road,” he said.

When asked where he worked before the nationwide lockdown was announced to combat the spread of novel coronavirus (Covid-19), he said, “I used to work in a sewing factory, and as the work is shut I have no option rather than to return to my home.

“I am living here with three of my family members, so it is tough for me to feed them without any work,” Mukesh added.

The Indian Railways has partially started the services of 200 more trains from Monday besides the 15 pairs of air-conditioned trains.

Even the norms of the social distancing outside the New Delhi railway station went for a toss as the people entering the station premises were standing just inches away from each other.

The railways has suspended the passenger, mail and express train services on March 25. However, it started running the Shramik Special trains to transport the stranded migrant workers, pilgrims, students and tourists across the country. Since May 1, the railways has transported over 56 lakh, migrant workers, across the country in over 4,000 Shramik Special trains.

The railways also started to run 15 pairs of Special trains from New Delhi to different parts of the country.

According to railway ministry officials, by 10 a.m. on Tuesday over 1.77 lakh passengers booked tickets for the 200 special timetabled trains.

Jagdish, a resident of Gaya in Bihar, who used to work in a sunmica factory said that he was also returning back to his home as he is unable to meet the demands of his family with the wage cut.

Speaking to IANS, he said, “We are getting very less salary and the landlords in whose home we reisded here didn’t waive the rent. So that is the reason why I am going back to my native place.”

When asked if he shall return back, he said, “First I want to reach home then only we can decide if we will come back or not.”

The country has witnessed mass exodus of migrant workers during the nationwide lockdown. Many people have braved the scorching heat and walked hundreds of kilometers towards their native places either by foot or on bicycles.

On Tuesday, the country witnessed more than 8,000 cases for the third consecutive day. With this, India has inched closer to the two-lakh mark as the total number of Covid-19 cases in India rose to 1,98,706 with 5,598 fatalities.

Remdesivir is the first drug to show improvement in COVID-19 patients

0

The government said on Tuesday it has approved Gilead Sciences Inc’s antiviral drug remdesivir for emergency use in treating COVID-19 patients.

Remdesivir is the first drug to show improvement in COVID-19 patients in formal clinical trials. It was granted emergency use authorization by the US Food and Drug Administration last month and has received approval by Japanese health regulators.

“Remdesivir approved on June 1 under emergency use with condition for five dose administration,” the Drugs Controller General said in an email statement.

The drugmaker did not immediately respond to an email seeking further details. As of Tuesday, India has 198,706 cases of coronavirus and has recorded 5,598 deaths, health ministry data showed.

Gilead Sciences had on Monday reported that remdesivir showed modest benefit in patients with moderate COVID-19 given a five-day course, while those who received it for 10 days in the study did not fare as well.

European and South Korean authorities are also looking at remdesivir, with South Korean health authorities last Friday saying they would request imports of the drug. Gilead is yet to gain regulatory approval in either market.

Lockdown 4.0: Delhi sees more cases, deaths than previous editions combined

0

Lockdown 4.0 in Delhi — between May 18 and 31 — saw 10,780 new COVID cases and 363 deaths, which were more than the tally of previous editions combined, as per the Health Department data.

The national capital recorded 1,543 positive coronavirus cases in the first lockdown, 3,320 cases in the second, and 5,159 cases in the third edition of the nation-wide lockdown, resulting in a total of 10,022 cases.

In a similar fashion, the number of deaths due to the deadly virus in the first three phases of the lockdown was 31, 32, and 96, respectively — totaling 159 deaths in total.

The casualties more than doubled in the lockdown 4.0.

However, the increased number of deaths in the fourth edition was also due to the late reporting of deaths by the hospitals, a Health Department official said.

“The hospitals were not reporting the deaths in a timely manner. However, after the government directed, the deaths which occurred in the last 35-40 days were also reported, which contributed to the rise in toll,” the official told IANS.

It is significant to note that as the restrictions were gradually relaxed through the consequent lockdown phases, the number of cases and death also increased in the national capital.

In the first lockdown (March 25 – April 14), when only essential services were allowed to function and an almost complete restriction on movement was imposed, the city registered 73 cases and roughly one death per day on an average.

When the lockdown was imposed, Delhi had reported 35 cases and one death. However, within a week, with the Nizamuddin Markaz incident, the number of cases saw a jump.

With the gradual reopening of shops in May and relaxations on the movement of vehicles and resumption of public transport in lockdown 4.0, the number of positive cases kept increasing. Delhi has allowed more relaxation within the city from Monday.

The second edition of lockdown (April 15-May 3) recorded 174 cases per day on an average, while the death average remained roughly the same as the previous version.

The daily average, however, in lockdown 3.0 was about 369 cases, and over six deaths reported daily.

Similarly, lockdown 4.0 saw about 26 deaths per day on an average — over four times of the deaths reported in lockdown 3.0 between May 4 and 17.

The per-day average of positive cases in the lockdown 4.0, at 770, was also more than double of the average in the lockdown 3.0 at 369.

The total coronavirus cases in the city stood at 20,834 while the death toll mounted to 523 as of Monday.

A doctor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) here, who has been quarantined after he tested positive for coronavirus, is using telemedicine to offer medical advice to his patients who are under his treatment.

Mohammad Shamim is a professor at the department of TB and chest diseases at the JNMC, which is affiliated to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Shamim, whose infection is asymptotic, is connecting directly with the JNMC staff via video conferencing to give advice on Covid-19 patients admitted to the isolation ward, and non-COVID-19 patients in the respiratory ward of the JNMC.

Shamim told IANS over phone on Tuesday, “We have 16 Covid-19 positive patients and 35 non-COVID-19 patients and I am treating them through telemedicine in consultation with my colleagues and junior doctors. I am in isolation in my room and facing no problems as such. I feel that the treatment of my patients should continue.”

He added, “Though it is challenging, I feel that doctors should continue to save lives at all costs. It is important to survive the pandemic and I feel that Covid-19 positive doctors who are home quarantined can use gadgets like laptops, desktops, telephones, and smartphones to give consultations to the patients.”

Shamim said that the experience of successfully treating Covid-19 patients at the JNMC, including those who are critically ill, made him confident that he would also recover from the infection soon.

Till now, 27 Covid-19 patients have fully recovered and been discharged from the JNMC.

One More Dangerous Cyclone “Nisarga”

0

Tropical storm “Nisarga”, which is headed towards the coasts in Maharashtra and Gujarat, is likely to intensify into a cyclone in the next six hours and is expected to make a landfall close to Mumbai tomorrow. This would be the first cyclonic storm to impact India’s financial capital, which has logged over 41,000 coronavirus cases so far, in over a century. It may further intensify into a “severe cyclonic storm” in the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department or IMD said this afternoon. Mumbai and neighbouring districts have been placed on high alert.

The depression over east-central Arabian Sea intensified into deep depression this afternoon. “It is very likely to cross north Maharashtra and adjoining south Gujarat coast between Harihareshwar and Daman, close to Alibag during the afternoon of June 3 as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph,” the IMD said this afternoon.

“It is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm during next six hours and further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 12 hours,” the statement read.On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray through video conferencing and reviewed the state’s preparedness, the Chief Minister’s office said.

More than 30 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in both the states. A team of the NDRF comprises about 45 personnel.”Gujarat has asked for five more teams. By this evening, 15 NDRF teams would be deployed in Gujarat and two are on standby. Ten teams are deployed in Maharashtra and six teams are on standby. Evacuation process and awareness drive has been initiated,”NDRF Director-General S N Pradhan said today.

“Nisarga is a severe cyclone and we’re expecting a wind speed of 90-100 kmph, which I think is negotiable. Still, as a precautionary measure, we are going to start the evacuation of people from the coastal areas of the two states (Maharashtra and Gujarat),” he had said yesterday.A storm surge – as high as two metres above the astronomical tide – will inundate the low-lying coastal areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts during the landfall, the weather department has said.

Fishermen have been asked to come back from the sea and respective district collectors have been asked to ensure there is no loss of life, a stame from the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s office said. Hospitals that are not treating coronavirus patients will be made available for those needing medical assistance, it added.

The storm may cause major damage to thatched houses, huts, power and communication lines and coastal crops, the weather department has said.Steps are being taken to ensure there is no disruption of power supply at a time when the state is battling the coronavirus crisis and thousands of patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, the NDRF said on Monday.

The tropical storm is expected to make a landfall in Mumbai days after Cyclone Amphan killed 99 people in Bengal and affected lakhs of people. “The people of those states have shown remarkable courage,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during monthly radio address “Mann Ki Baat”, adding “India stands with Odisha and West Bengal”.

Aus PM demands probe into ‘assault’ on journo

0

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday demanded an investigation into the assault of an Australian journalist and cameraman at the hands of US police.

The US correspondent of 7NEWS Australia, Amelia Brace, and cameraman Tim Myers was assaulted during their coverage of riots near the White House in Washington on Tuesday morning.

While live on air, Myers was struck in the chest by a riot shield, and Brace was clubbed with a police baton.

Morrison has now requested the Australian Embassy in Washingon D.C., to investigate the incident and provide further advice on registering the government’s concern.

Craig McPherson, Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs said: “The attack on our reporter and cameraman in Washington today is nothing short of wanton thuggery.

“They weren’t in anyone’s way just simply doing their job. To be belted with an armored shield and then our reporter cop a truncheon in the back is abhorrent.”

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese earlier described the incident as “completely unacceptable” and called for a review, a 7NEWS report said.

The development comes as some 40 cities across the US, including Washington D.C., have imposed curfews to curb acts of violence in extensive demonstrations against police brutality and racism.

Nationwide protests have erupted after George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old African-American man, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, “I can’t breathe”, and “please, I can’t breathe”.

All four police officers involved in the incident have been fired, and Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

Sammy urges ICC, cricketers to speak out on Floyd’s death

0

Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy has urged the cricket community to speak out on George Floyd’s death that has caused massive outrage in the United States.

Floyd, aged 46, died last week shortly after Derek Chauvin, a police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, “I can’t breathe,” and “please, I can’t breathe”.

Sammy took to social media and called out International Cricket Council (ICC) and other cricket boards to speak out on the matter as according to him, “injustice” like this happens all around the world.

“For too long black people have suffered. I’m all the way in St Lucia and I’m frustrated. If you see me as a teammate then you see George Floyd, Can you be part of the change by showing your support. #BlackLivesMatter,” Sammy wrote on his Twitter handle.

“ICC and all the other boards are you guys not seeing what’s happening to people like me? Are you not gonna speak against the social injustice against my kind. This is not only about America. This happens every day #BlackLivesMatter now is not the time to be silent. I wanna hear from you.

“Right now if the cricket world is not standing against the injustice against people of color after seeing that last video of that foot down the next of my brother, you are also part of the problem,” he added.

Sammy’s comments come after his former teammate Chris Gayle had also put out a similar message on social media. Gayle had said that racism doesn’t take place only in football but cricket also.

“Black lives matter just like any other life! Black people matter. P***k all racists people. Stop taking black people for fools, even our own black people wise tha P***k up and stop bringing down your own ffs!!!” Gayle wrote in his Instagram story.

“I’ve travel the globe and experience racist remarks towards me because I am Black, believe me…this list goes on!!!

“Racism is not only in football, but it’s also in cricket too!! Even within teams as a Black man I get the end of the stick!!! Black Powerful!” the ‘Universe Boss’ added.

Some 40 cities across the US have imposed curfews to curb acts of violence in extensive demonstrations against police brutality and racism. All four police officers involved in the Floyd incident that took place in Minneapolis city have been fired, and Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

‘Remove China Apps’ crosses 5 million downloads on Google Play Store

0

An app that aims to help smartphone users identify applications of Chinese origin has crossed five million downloads from Google Play Store in just about 15 days since its launch.

Offered by Jaipur-based OneTouch AppLabs, the ‘Remove China Apps’ was released on Google Play Store on May 17.

The popularity of the app comes amid border tensions between India and China in Ladakh and calls by Indian activists to boycott Chinese products.

The #BoycottChineseProducts campaign got a major boost after educator and innovator Sonam Wangchuk last week posted a YouTube video urging people to avoid Chinese goods.

The ‘Remove China Apps’ is ranked No. 1 among the top free apps on Google Play.

OneTouch AppLabs said this application is for “educational purposes only to identify the country of origin of a certain application(s)” and that it does not “promote or force people to uninstall any of the application(s).”

While it has managed to achieve an overall 4.9-star from reviewers, some users have pointed out shortcomings of the app.

“… I just wanted to give a suggestion for just a little feature, i.e., also tell us about the alternatives for that particular app. For example, Xender and Share it are being used by a lot of people for the transfer of files, and those apps are good. But if not those apps, then what to use as an alternative…??? I hope you consider this in the next update,” wrote one user in the review section.

Spoke with Trump about entry into expanded G7: Bolsonaro

0

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said that he spoke with his US counterpart Donald Trump about the South American nation’s possible entry into an expanded G7 group being proposed by Washington.

Bolsonaro referred to Brazil’s possible admission into the group of the world’s wealthiest countries in a message he posted on his Twitter account on Monday in which he said he addressed the matter in a telephone conversation with Trump, reports Efe news.

Bolsonaro wrote that Trump and he spoke about the expanded G7, which he insisted that Brazil must be a part of, as well as about Brazilian steel.

The far-right leader did not provide more details or go into the matter further.

On May 30, Trump announced that he was postponing the G7 leaders’ summit, adding that it was “outdated” and that he would like to see more countries added to the group.

“I’m postponing it because I don’t feel that as a G7 it properly represents what’s going on in the world. It is a very outdated group of countries,” the President had said.

Trump said he would like to see more countries within the group made up of the US, Japan, France, the UK, Italy, Canada, and Germany.

“We want Australia, we want India, we want South Korea. And what do we have? That’s a nice group of countries right there,” he said, adding: “So it might be a G10, G11.”

Trump also discussed the matter on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he invited to the upcoming G7 summit.

“Donald Trump informed about his idea of holding a G7 summit with a possible invitation (to) the leaders of Russia, Australia, India and the Republic of Korea,” Kremlin said in a statement.

The G7 leaders’ meeting, which the US is to host this year as it occupies the rotating presidency of the group, was scheduled from June 10 to 12.

Trump announced in April the cancellation of the in-person summit due to the rapid expansion and severity of the coronavirus pandemic and said it would take place virtually.

As an alternative date, Trump on May 30 said that the summit could be held over the weekend just before or after the UN General Assembly, which is scheduled to start on September 15, or after the US presidential election in November.

Apple releases new iOS update with fixes for new jailbreak bug

0

Apple has released iOS 13.5.1 update with an important change that patches the vulnerability used by the Unc0ver jailbreak tool which was released last week and allegedly works on all recent versions of iOS, including iOS 13.5.

Jailbreaking an iPhone gives users root access to the entire iPhone OS, allowing them to install tweaks and other apps outside of Apple’s App Store.

The updates are available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

“This update provides important security updates and is recommended for all users,” the company said in a statement.

Apple said that the new iOS 13.5.1 update also comes with new Memoji stickers and other bug fixes and improvements.

In addition to iOS 13.5.1 and iPadOS 13.5.1, Apple is releasing watchOS 6.2.6 and updates for HomePod and Apple TV, 9to5Mac reports.

To recall, Apple released iOS 13.5 last month with features such as Exposure Notification API.

The update also made it easier to unlock iPhone models with Face ID even wearing a mask. There were also enhancements for FaceTime group calls and Apple Music.

Trump vows to mobilize military to quell US protests

0

US President Donald Trump has vowed to deploy “thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers” to stop the unrest in the capital and other cities if local administrations refuse to take the action against demonstrators who were protesting over the death of African-American man, George Floyd.

Speaking to the media on Monday at the White House, Trump said “I am your President of law and order and an ally of all peaceful protests”, but was “taking immediate presidential action to stop the violence and restore security and safety in America” because the country needed “cooperation not contempt, security not anarchy, healing not hatred, justice not chaos”, reports Efe news.

“I am mobilizing all available, federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting to end the destruction and arson and to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans,” he said.

His remarks came as some 40 cities across the US, including Washington D.C., have imposed curfews to curb acts of violence in extensive demonstrations against police brutality and racism.

Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old man, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, “I can’t breathe”, and “please, I can’t breathe”.

All four police officers involved in the incident have been fired, and Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said that Floyd’s memory must not be “drowned out by an angry mob” and added that “strongly recommended” to every Governor to deploy the national guard in sufficient numbers to dominate the streets until the violence has been quelled.

“If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the US military and quickly solve the problem for them,” he said.

The head of the National Guard Office, General Joseph Lengyel, tweeted on Monday that “17,015 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen are assisting local and state civilian agencies responding to civil unrest”.

Calling the violence in Washington D.C. on Sunday night “a total disgrace”, Trump said he was “dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel, and law enforcement offices to stop the rioting, looting, vandalism assaults and the wanton destruction of property”.

He said the government was putting everybody on warning that seven o’clock curfew will be strictly enforced.

He vowed to arrest and prosecute those “who threatened innocent life and property”.

“I want the organisers of this terror to be on notice that you will face severe criminal penalties and lengthy sentences in jail.”

At the end of his speech, Trump said he would go to “pay my respects to a very, very special place”.

Surrounded by dozens of security personnel, he then walked out of the White House across Lafayette Square to St. John’s Episcopal Church that was damaged in fire amid protests on Sunday.

Trump posed for the cameras with a Bible in his hand in front of the windows of the church, whose basement caught fire, although no major damage was done.

Cyclone ‘Nisarga’: Storm activity intensifies in Arabian Sea

0

A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone that is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

“Nisarga” currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa’s capital city, and 710 km from the Surat district in Gujarat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensified into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in the subsequent 12 hours.

Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity.

It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday.

IMD’s Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3.

According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June.

Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, ‘Nisarga’ will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June.

“The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone,” Vineet Kumar said.

The IMD Director-General also said that the cyclonic storm will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and neighbouring states.

“As per our predictions, Maharashtra coastal districts like Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad, Mumbai and Palgarh will be more affected by it.”

The Central Water Commission has sounded flood alert for Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Mumbai, Palgarh and Nasik districts of Maharashtra, Daman district of union territory of Daman and Dui, Silvassa district of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Valsad district of Gujarat.

There could be inundation in low lying areas, townships, and city areas. Wind speed could also cause damage to trees, telephone, and electric poles, Mohapatra warned.

Due to its influence, the east-central Arabian Sea and south east Arabian Sea is currently rough. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea till Thursday near Kerala, Lakshadweep, coastal Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Syria records lowest civilian deaths since beginning of war

At least 71 civilians were killed in Syria in May, a record low since the civil war broke out in the country nine years ago, a war monitor reported.

The civilian casualties continue to decrease since a ceasefire was implemented in the northwestern Syrian in March, Efe news quoted the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as saying on Monday.

A total of 27 civilians were killed in separate attacks across the country, while 15 died in blasts caused by mines or explosive devices, including five children, the observatory said.

The NGO documented a total of 291 deaths in the last month, including fighters, soldiers and militias belonging to different forces involved in the conflict.

The troops loyal to President Bashar Assad had the majority share of the deaths as 89 people were killed, according to the source.

No official media has confirmed these figures.

The group of Hurras al-Din, considered to be the new Al Qaeda branch in Syria, launched the most violent attack on the pro-Assad forces on May 10 leaving 30 people dead, the observatory added.

Hurras al-Din, Guardians of the Religion, has not respected the truce agreed by Turkey, which supports the opposition, and Russia, one of the regime’s main allies.

This decrease comes after a ceasefire implemented since March 6 in Idlib and its outskirts in northwestern Syria, considered to be the opposition’s last stronghold.

Despite the reduction in the number of deaths, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs in Syria warned in its most recent report issued on May 29 that “the humanitarian situation for people in northwest Syria remains alarming”.

Rebels and Islamists are active in Idlib, including the Organization for the Liberation of the Levant, an alliance in which the former Syrian affiliate of Al Qaeda is included.
