Centre launches finance scheme for street vendors

0

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Monday launched a special micro-credit facility plan to provide affordable loans of up to Rs 10,000 to street vendors across the country.

Titled Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s Atmanirbhar Nidhi scheme or PM Svanidhi, the scheme, according to the government, will support over 50 lakh street vendors, who had their businesses operational on or before March 24, 2020. The scheme is valid until March 2022 and will provide total liquidity of Rs 5,000 crore.

Lending under the scheme will commence in the month of July.

“The vendors can avail a working capital loan of upto Rs 10,000, which is repayable in monthly installments in the tenure of one year, under PM SVANiDHI scheme. On timely/early repayment of the loan, interest subsidy at 7 percent per annum will be credited to bank accounts of beneficiaries,” said a tweet by the ministry.

The scheme was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on May 14 under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat economic package and the Union Cabinet approved the scheme on Monday.

Sidbi will be the ministry’s technical partner for the implementation of this scheme. They will manage the credit guarantee to the lending institutions through Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE).

In order to ensure fast implementation of the scheme with transparency, accountability, and consistency, a digital platform with a web portal or mobile app is being developed to administer the scheme with end-to-end solutions.

In another tweet, the ministry said that it is for the first time that microfinance institutions, non-banking finance companies, and self-help group banks have been allowed in a scheme for the urban poor due to their ground-level presence and proximity to the urban poor including the street vendors.

Surge in Covid cases continues in Telangana, six more succumb

0

Six more people died of Covid-19 in Telangana while the surge in new positive cases continued on Monday.

The six fatalities pushed the state’s death toll to 88 while with 94 fresh Covid-19 cases, the tally rose to 2,792.

For the first time in nearly two weeks, no migrant tested positive. There were also no deportees or foreign returnees among the new cases.

Officials said all 94 cases reported during the last 24 hours, ending 5 p.m. on Monday were local. Greater Hyderabad continued to be the hotbed, accounting for 79 cases.

In the continuing trend of Covid-19 spreading outside Greater Hyderabad, eight districts reported the remaining cases.

Officials said the state’s tally of cases include 434 cases reported among migrants, deportees and foreign returnees.

As 1,491 patients have been discharged from hospitals so far, the number of active cases now stands at 1,213.

With 199 cases, the state on Sunday had witnessed the biggest single-day jump in the cases. The officials attributed this to the relaxation in the lockdown.

“The lockdown has been relaxed since the 16th May 2020. It is being observed that there is a lot of mobility and movement of people from all walks of life and of all age groups. People are travelling across the state and some of them are not following the basic preventive measures like wearing a mask, maintaining safe physical distancing and overcrowding. There has been a surge in the cases since relaxation of lockdown,” reads the media bulletin on Monday.

The state government from Monday allowed inter-state movement of people. Officials said people from other states can now enter Teangana without passes.

From Monday, the night curfew timing was curtailed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Till now the curfew was in force from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The shops and business establishments, however, were asked to close at 8 p.m.

The government on Sunday announced that the lockdown outside the containment zone is extended till June 7 while in the containment zone it is extended till June 30.

Andhra Secretariat employee tests positive, two blocks shut

0

An employee of Andhra Pradesh Secretariat has tested positive for Covid-19, prompting the authorities to shut down two blocks on Monday and advise 84 employees to work from home for next two weeks.

Employees working in blocks 3 and 4 were directed not to come to the secretariat and were instead advised to work from home for 14 days.

Health authorities took up disinfectant operations in the entire premises including the two blocks.

The infected Secretariat employee, who works in the Agriculture Department, had, along with many others, returned last week to Amaravati from Hyderabad, where they were stranded during the lockdown period.

The government employees, who have their families in Hyderabad, used to travel to the Telangana capital every week. Many were stranded due to sudden imposition of the lockdown.

Ten RTC buses last week brought the stranded employees back to Amaravati. They were taken to Mangalagiri where Covid-19 test was done on them at a convention centre. Lunch was also arranged for the employees at the same venue and it is alleged that the social distancing was not maintained.

Later, a total of three government employees including the one who works at Secretariat tested positive. However, they said to have attended their respective offices for two days before the test results were known.

The Secretariat employee who tested positive stays in a hostel provided by the government. He shares a room with two other employees. The apartment building has 40 inmates, all government employees.

The health officials were busy identifying the primary contacts of the employees tested positive to send them to quarantine.

Meanwhile, panic gripped the Secretariat after the employee tested positive. The attendance was thin in other blocks. Some ministers have shifted the venue for their departmental reviews to other places in Vijayawada.

Last month, six staff members of the Raj Bhavan had also tested positive. The other staff were advised home quarantine.

Andhra Pradesh on Monday reported 105 new Covid cases, pushing the state’s tally to 3,676.

Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively stand up against racism

0

Hollywood couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively feel ashamed that they have allowed themselves to be “uninformed about deeply rooted systemic racism”.

Now, they are determined to address it and fight against it. As a start, they have donated $200,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund as protests and riots continue across the US after the killing of unarmed Black man George Floyd by police, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Reynolds, 43, and Lively, 32, shared the news through a joint statement on their social media.

“We’ve never had to worry about preparing our kids for different rules of law or what might happen if we’re pulled over in the car. We don’t know what it’s like to experience that life day in and day out. We can’t imagine feeling that kind of fear and anger. We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is,” they began.

The statement continued: “We’ve been teaching our children differently than the way our parents taught us. We want to educate ourselves about other people’s experiences and talk to our kids about everything, all of it… especially our own complicity.

“We talk about our bias, blindness and our own mistakes. We look back and see so many mistakes which have led us to deeply examine who we are and who we want to become. They’ve led us to huge avenues of education. We’re committed to raising our kids so they never grow up feeding this insane pattern and so they’ll do their best to never inflict pain on another being consciously or unconsciously.”

On why they decided to contribute the large sum of money to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, they explained: “That’s the least we can do to honour not just George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Eric Garner, but all the black men and women who have been killed when the camera wasn’t rolling.”

Back in March, Reynolds and Lively donated $1 million to Feeding America and Food Banks Canada, as well as $400,000 to the hardest-hit hospitals in New York amid the coronavirus pandemic.

All shops, including barber, salon allowed in Delhi

0

The Delhi government on Monday allowed all shops in the markets to open without any odd-even rules and also gave its nod for starting barber shops and salons in the city for the first time since the lockdown.

Addressing the media, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the night curfew will remain in place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. instead of between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. in the previous edition of the lockdown. During the curfew, the movement will only be allowed for essential services.

Announcing the further relaxations in the ‘Unlock 1.0’ phase announced by the Centre, he said that the relaxations given earlier will be implemented as it is.

“The Central government has sent its guidelines on the next phase of the lockdown beginning from Monday and the decisions of the Delhi government are based on the guidelines of the Central government,” said Kejriwal.

He said the Delhi government is also removing the restriction of only one passenger being allowed to travel in an auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw, and phat-phat sewas.

“The barber and salon shops will now remain open except spas. Based on the guidelines of the Central government, the Delhi government is also removing the restrictions on not more than three passengers allowed in a four-wheeler, and not more than one passenger allowed on a two-wheeler.”

Kejriwal said that since there is no condition in the guidelines of the Central government of shops being allowed to operate on an odd-even basis.

“The Delhi government has decided to lift this condition and now all shops will be allowed to operate in a market place. The Delhi government also announced the operation of the industries based on staggered timings on the guidelines of the Central government, which have also been removed now,” he said.

The Central government on Saturday announced steps for exiting the nationwide lockdown, declaring that the restriction will be limited to only containment zones upto June 30.

The barber shops and salons in the national capital were not allowed to operate since the lockdown was imposed on March 25.

Offices, shops re-open, buses back on roads in Gujarat

With the announcement of relaxations in lockdown norms, the wheels of administration in Gujarat started rolling again, here on Monday, after more than two months of shutdown.

The government offices, including the Secretariat, returned to normal functioning. However, curbs continued for offices located in containment zones and employees residing in those areas.

According to the government announcement, all shops outside the containment zones have been allowed to operate from Monday. Sports complexes and stadia have been allowed to open — not for spectators, only for sportspersons and games.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and other Ministers attended their offices at the ‘Swarnim Sankul’ complexes of the State Secretariat, here.

Entering the SS-1 complex, where the Chief Minister’s office is located, Rupani chanted the “Vaishnav jan to tene re kahiye”, favourite hymn of Mahatma Gandhi. The Chief Minister and other Ministers kept 2-minute silence to pay respects to all those who lost their lives due to Covid-19.

At the Secretariat, employees and visitors were allowed only from Gates No 1 and 4 after thermal screening.

The state transport buses, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run (AMC) AMTS and BRTS also started operating, barring in the containment areas.

The dedicated state transport buses, ferrying government employees from Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar, also plied at 50 per cent strength during the day. The passengers were thermal screened by the conductor before entering the bus and sat maintaining social distance.

The AMC also declared micro containment zones in place of earlier declared containment zones, where instead of declaring the entire ward as containment zone, only the affected portions of the wards have been identified for a lockdown till the end of this month. 46 wards from Ahmedabad’s 7 zones have been identified, covering 14,160 houses and 69,624 residents.

However, his parents, who work as agricultural labourers, were not able to afford the Rs 1 lakh fee, due to the family’s poor financial condition. While Mahesh and his family were overjoyed that he managed to get a seat, their financial status, however, put them in a tough spot, as they had no means to pay the college admission fee.

It was then that Mahesh sought help from former TRS MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha and approached her on Twitter. The ex-MP immediately responded to Mahesh’s tweet and decided to extend financial support to him.

Andy Murray will return from his latest injury problem on June 23 in a tournament organised by his brother Jamie to raise money for a UK National Health Service charity. Jamie Murray has helped create the behind-closed-doors tournament called ‘Schroders Battle of the Brits’.

The event, which runs from June 23-28, will see the Murray brothers and fellow British players Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans go head to head at the Lawn Tennis Association’s Roehampton base in London.

It will be screened live on Amazon Prime and aims to raise at least $122,000 for the state-run NHS.With the ATP and WTA seasons postponed due to the coronavirus, Murray’s first appearance since November’s Davis Cup Finals will be a welcome tonic for tennis fans.

“The last few months have been incredibly challenging times for everyone and we see this event as our way of giving back,” Jamie Murray said.

“A lot of work has gone in to make sure this could happen and we are very excited to be able to bring an action-packed week of tennis, while raising valuable funds for NHS heroes to say thank you for the amazing work they have done.”

Prior to the lockdown, former world number one Andy Murray had been returning to the court after another injury-enforced absence.

The 33-year-old was unable to hit for three months because of what was initially diagnosed as a mild bone bruise.

Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, later believed the problem was heterotopic ossification, bone growth associated with the hip resurfacing operation he underwent in January 2019.

Virat Kohli praising about MS Dhoni

India captain Virat Kohli credited his predecessor MS Dhoni for playing a big part in him taking over as skipper of the national side. Kohli said that while he has always been inclined towards taking responsibility, becoming the captain of the Indian team was “not even in his wildest dreams”.

He said that once he felt that he had made his place in the team, he started talking to Dhoni, who was the captain at the time, about different tactics, and said that this probably gave Dhoni the confidence that Kohli could take over the reins from him.

“I have always been inclined towards taking responsibility,” he told off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on an Instagram Live chat. “After my debut for India, it was just about wanting to play, it was about being in the Indian XI all the time.”

“Then, with your intrigue in the game, you start talking to the captain regularly. I was always in MS’ ears, discussing different tactics,” Kohli added.

“I think he got a lot of confidence that I can do this after him,” Kohli said.”I think a large portion of me becoming captain was also to do with him observing me for a long time,” he added.

He said that the transition from one captain to another does not happen overnight and that you have to build trust and show that you can take over the job.

“I think he played a big role in that,” Kohli said.Kohli, during the interaction also revealed why he decided to play former Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal like a leg-spinner, who was at peak of his career at the time in 2012.

Kohli said his Doosra — a delivery which turns away from a right-hander batman — was difficult to counter while his regular off-spin delivery was not that potent.

Kohli went on to score 183 in the match, which remains his personal best in ODIs, as India chased down 330 with more than two overs to spare.

Virat Kohli is regarded by many as the best batsman in the world

Virat Kohli is regarded by many as the best batsman in the world currently and the prospect of bowling to him surely makes a few bowlers very nervous. Pakistan’s 17-year-old pace sensation Naseem Shah, though, is looking forward to taking on the India’s batting star and said that while he respects the Indian captain, he doesn’t fear him. “I hope that I can bowl well against India when that chance comes by and won’t let our fans down. As for Virat Kohli, I respect him but don’t fear him,” Naseem Shah said.

“It’s always a challenge to bowl to the best, but that’s where you have to raise your game. I look forward to playing against Virat Kohli and India whenever that chance comes, the young pacer was quoted saying by PakPassion.net.

Naseem became the youngest fast bowler in history to take a five-wicket haul in an innings and a hat-trick in consecutive Tests against Sri Lanka (December 2019) and Bangladesh (February 2020) in Karachi and Rawalpindi.

Naseem, who burst onto the scene on Pakistan’s Australia tour last year, is the youngest fast bowler and second bowler overall to take five wickets in a Test innings.

He achieved that feat at 16 years and 307 days against Sri Lanka in Karachi last year.

Virat Kohli has taken world cricket by storm with his batting exploits in recent times. The Indian skipper has broken records at will in the past two years but one person who is always been hot on on his heels is Australia’s Steve Smith.

While many have admitted that Virat Kohli is head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to the limited-over formats, some are of the belief that Smith is better when it comes to the longest format.

As per the current ICC Rankings, Smith heads the list in Test rankings with Kohli hot on his heels. In the ODI rankings, Virat Kohli sits pretty at the top followed by teammate Rohit Sharma with Smith not featuring even in top 10.

In T20Is, Pakistan batsman Babar Azam is in number one spot followed by India star KL Rahul with Kohli currently in 10th spot. Smith is currently in 52nd spot in the table.

“In areas outside containment zones, all activities will be permitted, except some, which will be allowed with the stipulation of following standard operating procedures (SoPs) to be prescribed by the ministry of health and family welfare, in a phased manner,” ordered Chief Secretary T. M. Vijay Bhaskar.

Under the fifth guideline, the chief secretary said there will be no restriction on inter-state and intrastate movement of people and goods.

“No separate permission, approval or e-permit will be required for such movements,” Bhaskar said.

However, separate orders will be issued by the state health department regarding the inter-state movement of people to Karnataka based on public health assessment and prevalence of Covid in various states.

“Movement of passenger trains and Shramik special trains, domestic passenger air travel, movement of Indian nationals stranded outside the country and of specific persons to travel abroad, evacuation of foreign national, and sign on and sign off of Indian seafarers will continue to be regulated as per SoPs issued,” he said.

Likewise, for timely provision of medical attention, Bhaskar advised all employers to get their employees to install Aarogya Setu app incompatible phones.

“Any person violating these measures will be liable to be proceeded against as per the provisions of Sections 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, besides legal action under Section 188 of the IPC, and other legal provisions as applicable,” ordered Bhaskar.
