NYC’s lower-income, minority groups worst-hit by COVID-19

0

People in New York City’s lower-income neighborhoods and communities of colour were suffering the most due to the coronavirus pandemic, state Governor Andrew Cuomo said citing official data.

As shown in preliminary results of antibody tests of 8,000 people in New York City, the Bronx Borough, where a majority of residents are African-Americans and Latino-Americans, has the highest COVID-19 positive rate of 34 percent, compared with a citywide average of 19.9 percent, Cuomo said at Wednesday’s briefing.

Ranking by zip codes, the top 10 highest-infected neighborhoods were located in the boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, home to most of the city’s minority groups, reports Xinhua news agency.

The highest rate was recorded in Morrisania, the Bronx, where 43 percent of residents tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

All the other nine neighborhoods had a positive rate of over 33 percent.

Moreover, the coronavirus’s spread is continuing in those communities, and “that’s where the new cases are coming from”, said Cuomo.

To combat the disparities, Cuomo said the state will partner with the state’s largest healthcare provider Northwell Health to double church-based testing sites to 44 locations in those hardest-hit neighborhoods.

The state will also expand the testing capacity in 40 locations of New York City Public Housing facilities, where social distancing is hard to maintain due to limited room space.

Meanwhile, the state’s Capitol Region, stepped into phase one of reopening on Wednesday, leaving downstate regions — New York City, Long Island and Mid-Hudson as the only ones not qualified for reopening yet.

Meanwhile, statewide religious gatherings with up to 10 people will be allowed as of Thursday, said Cuomo, who added that participants should wear masks and practice social distancing.

It came a day after the Governor announced that Memorial Day ceremonies with the same scale will be allowed to take place next week in the state, the epicentre of the pandemic in the US.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday that the city would offer free COVID-19 tests at nursing homes starting next week, due to the large number of infections there.

De Blasio said the city has procured enough personal protective equipment to get through May, including N95 masks, face shields, goggles, gloves, and surgical gowns.

The state of New York has reported over 354,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 28,000 deaths, remaining as the hardest-hitin the country, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Giroud, Caballero sign one-year contract extension with Chelsea

0

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud and goalkeeper Willy Caballero have penned down one-year contract extensions until the end of the 2020-21 season.

Having joined Chelsea on a deadline-day transfer from Arsenal in January 2018, Giroud has made 39 starts and 37 sub appearances and scored 21 goals.

“I am delighted to continue my journey and adventure at Chelsea. I can’t wait to get back to playing and enjoying competitive football with my team-mates. I’m looking forward to wearing the Chelsea shirt again, especially in front of our fans at a full Stamford Bridge, whenever it is safe to do so,” Giroud said in an official statement.

On the other hand, Caballero had joined the Blues in the summer of 2017 from Manchester City, and has played nine games this season.

“It is a difficult time for everyone right now so I feel blessed by this opportunity and truly appreciate it. I want to thank my team-mates for helping me to be my best and I want to thank the boss and the club for extending my contract. I’m sure they will continue to demand the maximum from me and I will compete with the same energy as always. I am very happy,” said the 38-year-old goalkeeper.

The English Premier League, which was halted in mid-March due to the spread of novel coronavirus, plans to restart in June. The clubs have returned to training in small groups since Tuesday.

Google wins prestigious US govt Cloud project

0

Google which was dropped out of the $10 billion Pentagon Cloud project which was eventually won by Microsoft in a bitter fight with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has bagged a Cloud project with the US Department of Defense (DoD).

Thomas Kurian-led Google Cloud announced that it won a pilot project with DoD’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to build secure cloud management solutions to detect, protect against, and respond to cyber threats worldwide.

The multi-cloud solution will be built on Google’s a modern application platform Anthos, allowing DIU to run web services and applications across Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure – while being centrally managed from the Google Cloud Console.

“We’re honoured to partner with DIU on this critical initiative to protect its network from bad actors that pose threats to our national security,” said Mike Daniels, Vice President, Global Public Sector, Google Cloud.

Axios first reported that the contract was between $1 million and $10 million.

The secure cloud management solution will provide benefits such as better network throughput with virtual firewalls and auditing devices that scale to meet demand up to 500,000 concurrent users and 1 million endpoints, Google said in a statement on Wednesday.

It would reduce cost by eliminating excess hardware and servers as applications and services can now be scaled up or down in the cloud-based on-demand.

The solution would also provide support for roaming users on mobile devices, including telework scenarios, with minimal latency for teleconferencing and VoIP.

“This secure cloud management solution will help the DIU maintain vigilance, while also helping it seamlessly manage applications in service of its mission,” said Beau Hutto, VP Public Sector, Netskope.

US Senate to vote on Trump’s pick for intel chief

0

The US Senate will vote on President Donald Trump’s nomination of Congressman John Ratcliffe as the next Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on Thursday.

The Senate, where Republicans have a narrow majority, is expected to approve Ratcliffe for the post, reports Xinhua news agency.

Ratcliffe, 54, was nominated again by Trump in February to be the nation’s intel chief, several months after the Texas Republican’s first nomination was withdrawn amid bipartisan concerns about his qualification.

First elected to the US Congress, Ratcliffe sits on the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees and was a member of Trump’s impeachment defense team.

US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell is currently the acting DNI.

The Trump administration’s first DNI, Dan Coats, left the post in August 2019 after a tenure in which he conflicted with the White House on a number of national security issues.

The DNI serves as the head of the US intelligence community.

Heat kills thousands of Australians yearly: Study

0

Australian researchers have called to add climate change as an official cause of death after a study published on Thursday found that heat-related deaths have been under-reported in the country.

The study, published by Australian National University (ANU), found that excessive natural heat has been responsible for at least 50 times more fatalities than recorded on death certificates, reports Xinhua news agency.

A statistical analysis found that 36,765 deaths in Australia over the past 11 years could have been attributed to heat, but there were only 340.

“Climate change is a killer, but we don’t acknowledge it on death certificates,” Arnagretta Hunter, a co-author of the study from the ANU Medical School, said in a media release.

“If you have an asthma attack and die during heavy smoke exposure from bushfires, the death certificate should include that information.

“We can make a diagnosis of a disease like coronavirus, but we are less literate in environmental determinants like hot weather or bushfire smoke,” Hunter said, adding that heat is the most dominant risk posed from climate change in Australia.

According to the study, excessive natural heat was responsible for approximately 2 percent of all deaths in Australia.

Hunter said the country’s death certificates must be modernized to capture the impact of global warming.

“Climate change is the single greatest health threat that we face globally even after we recover from the coronavirus.

“We know the summer bushfires were a consequence of extraordinary heat and drought and people who died during the bushfires were not just those fighting fires – many Australians had early deaths due to smoke exposure,” she said.

Scientist fired for refusing to manipulate Florida’s COVID-19 data

0

A US scientist who created Florida’s COVID-19 data website was fired earlier this week for refusing to manipulate data in the way the state officials need to reopen the economy, according to a local newspaper report.

Florida Today reported on Wednesday that Rebekah Jones, who was the chief architect of Florida’s COVID-19 data and surveillance dashboard intended to provide a real-time picture of the local coronavirus situation, was fired on Monday by the state’s Department of Health, reports Xinhua news agency.

The report quoted Jones as telling the CBS-12 news television station in West Palm Beach that Jones was fired because she refused to “manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen” as ordered.

Jones didn’t give further details, the report said.

The newspaper, which first reported Jones’ removal from her position in charge of Florida COVID-19 data portal, said she confirmed her dismissal in an email, saying: “I worked on it alone, 16 hours a day for two months, most of which I was never paid for, and now that this has happened I’ll probably never get paid for.”

The report said that in an email on May 15 to researchers and other data users, Jones warned that there could be changes concerning the accessibility and transparency of the Florida COVID-19 dashboard data.

Local and other media reports about Jones’ dismissal have raised concerns about the integrity of the COVID-19 data in Florida that were cited as the science base to support decisions on reopening the local economy.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has said he based his decision to start reopening his state on science, and that the Florida data website had been praised by federal health experts.

Agra covid tally at 831, recovery rate better

0

Agra Covid-19 tally touched 831 on Thursday as six women reported positive among eight new cases. The recovery rate though continues to improve, with 660 patients discharged so far.

District authorities clarified that the city limits would continue to remain in the red zone, though shops in some markets would be allowed to open in a staggered manner after ensuring they complied with the guidelines.

Meanwhile, the face-off between the administration and doctors of the IMA continued to cause concern. The IMA has opposed arbitrary action against some private hospitals after the Infection Prevention Team served notices to two establishments.

Authorities claimed the migrant workers were now being ferried across by the UP roadways buses to their destinations. The pressure on the Mathura and Bharatpur borders has eased, as more buses have been put on the job. The workers are being provided prompt medicare and food, officials of the state roadways said.

Trump considers convening G7 Summit at Camp David

0

US President Donald Trump said that he was considering to convene the G7 Summit at Camp David, which had been rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now that our country is ‘transitioning back to greatness’, I am considering rescheduling the G-7, on the same or similar date, in Washington, D.C., at the legendary Camp David,” Xinhua news agency quoted Trump as saying in a tweet on Wednesday.

“The other members are also beginning their comeback. It would be a great sign to all – normalization,” he added, without providing more details.

The abrupt announcement came as the Trump administration attempted to revive the country despite the lack of sign of a significant downward trend in COVID-19 infections.

The US currently accounts for the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 1,551,668 and 93,431, respectively, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

The White House said in March that the summit, originally scheduled to take place at Camp David in June, was cancelled due to the pandemic, and leaders would have a video-conference instead.

Camp David is the country retreat for the US President, some 68 miles from Washington D.C.

Visa allows most employees to work from home through 2020

0

Visa Inc. has allowed the majority of its 20,000 employees to work from home for the rest of the year in light of safety concerns due to COVID-19, the global payments network’s CEO Alfred Kelly Jr. has said.

“The safety and well-being of Visa employees continue to be my top priority. As a result, I expect a majority of our workforce will continue to work from home through the 2020 calendar year,” Kelly said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.

Another reason for extending remote working for most of its employees is that the move will contribute towards decongesting transit systems and roads amid concerns about social distancing.

“We are fortunate the majority of Visa employees can work safely from home while continuing to support our clients effectively. Unfortunately, there are tens of millions of people who can’t work from home, for whom not showing up to work means not getting paid,” Kelly said.

“It simply seems wrong for Visa employees to be crowding transit systems and roads when we have the flexibility to both continue full business continuity while working from home. Those who have to get to their place of work to receive a paycheck should have priority use of socially distanced transit,” he added.

Visa’s announcement came after rival firm American Express Co. on Monday said that the majority of its workers can continue working from home for the rest of 2020.

Plea in SC seeks to check fake news, instigative content on Twitter

0

A plea has been moved in the Supreme Court by BJP leader Vinit Goenka seeking a mechanism to check content on Twitter spreading hatred through fake news and instigative content via bogus accounts.

The plea filed through advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey argued that presently a total number of Twitter handles in India are around 35 million and a total number of Facebook accounts are 350 million and experts say that around 10 percent Twitter handles (3.5 million) and 10 percent Facebook accounts (35 million) are duplicate/bogus/fake.

The petitioner argued that these fake Twitters handles and bogus Facebook accounts, have been created, in the name of eminent people and high dignitaries including the President of India, Vice President, Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, Chief Justice of India and the Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Goenka said that these fake Twitter handles and Facebook accounts use real photos of constitutional authorities and eminent citizens. As a result, the common man relies upon the messages published from these Twitter handles and Facebook accounts.

The petitioner insisted that fake news is the root cause of many riots, including the one in Delhi earlier this year. Moreover, bogus accounts are used to promote communalism, which is a threat to the unity of the country. The plea argued that political parties use fake social media accounts to tarnish the image of opponents during elections, and also for self-promotion.

The plea sought the apex court to issue a direction to the Centre, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Ministry of Law & Justice, and Twitter India to make a mechanism against the social media accounts in order to stop the hatred, fake, instigative and other news which are contrary to the law of the country or violates the law of the country.

The plea also sought directions to make a law to initiate action against Twitter and their representatives in India for willfully abetting and promoting anti-India tweets and penalizing them. The petitioner cited that the Ministry of Home Affairs has banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) under the Unlawful Activities and Prevention Act on July 10, 2019, yet this banned organization continues to have an active presence on Twitter promoting its agenda. The petitioner argued despite sending a representation to the authority concerned, no action has been taken against social media giant Twitter.

Despite relaxations, lockdown blues continue in Bengaluru

0

The eastern suburbs of the city — Iblur, Bellandur, Kaikondrahalli and Kodathi — continue to show the signs of lockdown with very little traffic and shut shops, despite relaxations.

“Only 30-40 per cent of my colleagues are attending office despite easing of lockdown. Many people are scared of Covid-19 and are not coming out,” said Prabhas Chandra, 33, an employee at Reliance Jio, waiting for a bus near his office at Bellandur bus station.

The private company employee from Paradip, Odisha, said the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses were minimally occupied as it resumed services on Tuesday after nearly two months.

Empty buses with 3-4 passengers were seen plying on the roads.

The scene was similar at Agara, Bellandur, Kaikondrahalli and Kodathi bus stations, which used to teem with people awaiting buses.

Similar was the story with autorickshaws, allowed to ply with limited passengers from Tuesday.

Feroze, 33, an autorickshaw driver from Dharwad, waiting opposite Wipro headquarters on the Sarjapura Road, didn’t find many takers for his services on the first day. “I could earn only Rs 300. Only a few people are asking for the service. I took out my autorickshaw at 7 a.m,” said Feroze.

Even if a lot of people ask for services, Feroze couldn’t take more than two in his three-wheeler to maintain physical distancing amid the pandemic. Corroborating Feroze’s views, not many autorickshaws were plying, a far cry from the pre-lockdown times.

The Wipro headquarters entrance and the series of shops opposite its main gate always buzzed with activity with many people buying food and other necessities. The entire complex is shuttered. There’s no sign of the dosa sellers who cooked them on embers.

Near the Iblur flyover by Agara lake, Harish, a Swiggy delivery boy, said orders in that part of the city had reduced to 8-9 a day. “In the pre-lockdown time, I could deliver more than 15 orders a day. Everything is changed now,” he told IANS.

Meanwhile, even as a microbrewery on one of the main roads in the area remained shut, an employee was seen seeking buyers outside for freshly brewed beer at Rs 500 a litre.

Similarly, a handful of people lined up maintaining physical distance at the liquor shop on the Sarjapura Road to buy some bottles.

Further towards Sarjapura, a Maruti Suzuki Nexa showroom had opened a couple of days ago after nearly two months. The showroom, open only till 6 p.m, is hoping to sell at least one car a day unlike four earlier. “We had 24-person sales team. Currently, we have only 6-7,” said Jagdish Dihar, 41, who manages the showroom.

At the entry point of Carmelaram, opposite Siemens and Accenture office complex, Guntur Mess that served traditional Andhra cuisine was empty. “We are serving food to 10-12 people a day. The lockdown effect is profound,” said Rayappa, a partner of the hotel.

Despite the lack of business, Rayappa said his mess was arranging free food for people walking on the road.

Across the 10-12 km stretch from Kodathi to Iblur, a number of shops — groceries and others — were open, and an equal number shut. People didn’t venture out to resume pre-lockdown kind of life.

The signature Bengaluru traffic was missing in this part of the city. Despite fewer vehicles, almost 90 per cent less than normal days, the traffic police were manning the junctions, regulating vehicle movement and traffic lights.

However, a few cars and two-wheelers were seen violating the physical distancing rules, with some of them running on full capacity with people without masks.

Though outdoor activity is less despite the easing of restrictions, it definitely better than 2-3 week ago when almost everything was shut.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh, which falls in the Red Zone category, on Wednesday extended the prohibitory orders barring the assembly of four or more people, in the district till May 31 in the wake of the nationwide lockdown to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier, the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) Section 144 was in force in the district till May 17. However, it was extended on Wednesday keeping in view the number of cases. On Tuesday, the district had reported three new cases.

Sharma Joshi-starrer ‘Fauji Calling’ confirmed for OTT release

0

The Sharman Joshi-starrer “Fauji Calling”, which was earlier to be released in the theatre, will now be launched on an OTT platform, says writer-director Aaryaan Saxena.

“The film is ready. In fact, we were supposed to release it in May but we can’t do so owing to the lockdown. So, I have discussed with my producers to release it on OTT platforms,” said Saxena.

The makers have unveiled the poster of the film that also features Ranjha Vikram Singh, Bidita Bag, Mugdha Godse and Zarina Wahab.

The story is based on events around the Pulwama attack, and how such attacks not only take away the lives of soldiers but permanently scar their near and dear ones. The incidents are relatable even today since there are ceasefire violations happening even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Said Ranjha: ” ‘Fauji Calling’ tells the story of the armed forces as well as the untold story of their families. Even today, while we all are ensuring we are safe, the soldiers are on duty and are guarding the country, and not just their near and dear ones. At this time, it is extremely important to recognize their sacrifice and that is why we want ‘Fauji Calling’ to reach out to the audience as soon as possible.”

Corona disease will not be completely eradicated shortly

0

Maharashtra should accept coronavirus as a part of life and begin the process of relaxing the lockdown, suggested Sharad Pawar, the chief of Nationalist Congress Party, today. In a series of tweets, Mr Pawar whose party is part of the state’s ruling coalition, said he had a discussion on the matter with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today.

After the Centre announced lockdown 4 with a series of relaxations and left it to the states to decide on the specifics, Maharashtra which has the biggest chunk of the country’s coronavirus patients, indicated that it would not ease lockdown in a hurry.

While allowing 50,000 industries to open in the green zone — which has minimum or no cases of coronavirus — the Chief Minister said the state has managed to avoid a bigger outbreak only because of the lockdown. “What if we lift the lockdown and this coronavirus spreads everywhere? I won’t let that happen in Maharashtra,” he said.

But with the economy counting the cost of a prolonged lockdown, Mr Pawar today offered a roadmap of easing the restrictions and getting the state back on the track to recovery.

“Corona disease will not be completely eradicated shortly. It is necessary to accept the corona as a part of life, beware of it & create awareness among the masses about health care. In Japan, people wear masks, look after personal hygiene as part of their routine social life,” his tweet read.

In later tweets, he spoke of providing incentives for industry and restarting transport, ports, and the education sector.

The state, he said, needs to take the “right steps to gradually restore” road transport and plan for the resumption of air and rail services. The Centre has already announced resumption of 200 trains from the next month.

Shops, offices, establishments in the private sector should be opened in a staggered manner.

The pace of work in public and private ports seems to have slowed down, Mr Pawar tweeted. To increase imports, exports and inland shipping, consultations should be held with industrialist, entrepreneurs and expert officials in the field.

“New employment opportunities have emerged for unemployed people in Maharashtra. An action plan will have to be drawn up on how to accommodate them in the industry,” one of the tweets read.

To build public confidence, ministers and government officials should join work. The government should keep people posted about the relaxations through daily briefings, he said.
