0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video conference with Chief Ministers of the all the states is underway. In this meeting, Modi is discussing about the lockdown that is going to end on May 17th. Over the last week or so, there is a huge spike in Corona cases in the country and in this view, Modi is chalking out a plan. Accordingly he held this conference with CMs.

In this conference, Modi is said to have informed the CMs to take all the measures to restrict Corona virus from spreading to the rural parts i.e, villages where the population is more than the tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

On the migrant workers walking towards to their places, Modi reportedly said “It is Human nature to go back to their places and there is nothing wrong in it.” However, there is lack of coordination between the Railways and the states and so many migrant workers are getting stranded at cities. For them the Railways has changed the plan too.

In this conference Modi appreciated the CMs for their efforts in containing the virus but added that still there is a lot to be done.

Super Star Rajinikanth set to enter politics

While many countries including India are going through a lengthy lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19, few states in our nation relaxed the restriction on selling of liquor. As per guidelines of government of India, only 10 people can attend a funeral and 20 to a marriage, but govts allowed opening of wine shops which eventually led to people thronging in large numbers.

The governments are already inviting a lot criticism all over and freshly, Superstar Rajinikanth expressed his discontent on AIADMK govt in Tamil Nadu for allowing the sale of liquor in state. This came a day after Tamil Nadu regime sought the Supreme Court to issue a stay on Madras High Court’s order to shut down TASMAC stores and stop selling liquor.

“If AIADMK government reopens liquor stores at this time, they must forget the dream of coming to power again,” warned Rajini through a tweet and said that ‘state government should look for other sources of revenue but not by selling liquor during this crisis’.

With Rajini set to enter politics, this warning to state government has caught everyone’s attention. It is known that the Kabali star will take a plunge into politics in the coming elections. He declared that he won’t aim to become Chief Minister, but one of his party’s legislator will be the CM candidate.

Has Vizag gas leak contaminated water bodies?

0

A study is on over the impact of the gas leak from LG Polymers on the overall environment in the surrounding villages while authorities have sent samples from water bodies including a major water reservoir for analysis amid public apprehension that they were contaminated by chemical toxins.

Following the Styrene gas leak from the chemical plant that killed 12 people and affected hundreds of others on May 7, authorities stopped drinking water supply from the Megahdrigedda reservoir, one of the sources of water for the port city.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) said the supply from Meghadrigedda was stopped immediately as a precautionary measure.

“The water will not be drawn from Meghadrigedda till tests are conducted and it is proved that the water is safe for drinking,” GVMC Commissioner G. Srijana said.

She, along with officials from the regional water testing laboratory, inspected the reservoir on Sunday.

Water from Mudasarlova, Yeleru, and Thatipudi reservoirs is being used to meet the city’s requirements.

Officials said since Meghadrigedda caters to the water needs of only a few areas, the stoppage had no major impact on the supply.

Locals claimed the reservoir was affected due to leakage of chemical toxins from the plant as layers of particles were seen floating on it and it also resulted in the death of fish in the water body.

The gas leak is reported to have polluted other water bodies in five villages surrounding the plant. The samples from all water bodies were collected and sent for analysis.

GVMC officials said the impact would be known only after the receipt of the rest results.

Meanwhile, a team of experts from CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Institute conducting an environmental impact assessment of the gas leak has suggested that water tanks in the affected areas be emptied out and cleaned thoroughly.

Villagers, who would be returning home later in the day, have been advised not to use the provisions, including groceries, which were left out in the open.

Officials have declared the five villages safe for the return of their residents. However, there are apprehensions over the extent of the impact the gas leak had on the environment.

Some experts said the bacteria from the dead cattle and other animals could pose a health hazard for the residents upon their return.

The people are also worried about the impact the chemical toxins could have on the quality of groundwater. A huge quantity of water was sprinkled on the leaking tanker in the plant for the last five days to keep its temperature under control. Water was also sprayed in the villages to reduce the gas density in the air.

Locals said this water could have polluted the groundwater as well as flowed into water bodies around the villages.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister K. Kannababu said the state government has constituted a committee of medical and health experts to study the impact of the gas leak on the health of the public.

On Sunday, the national transporter announced to gradually resume the train services with 15 pair AC trains equivalent to the Rajdhani Express from New Delhi.

Monday also witnessed cases in single digits only from all the 7 districts that reported new cases in Andhra Pradesh. The highest number of 9 positive cases were reported from Kurnool and Chittoor districts, while Anantapur district reported 8 cases, and Guntur district reported 5 cases in the last 24 hours. Krishna, and Visakhapatnam districts reported 3 cases each, while Nellore district reported only 1 case. Six districts did not report any new cases on Monday morning.

This is the lowest tally of active cases in many weeks for the state.

Kurnool district’s cumulative tally, at 575 cases, tops the state list. However, the number of active cases in the district is 292, with 267 reported cured and 16 deaths. This is followed by Guntur and Krishna districts with 387 and 342 cases respectively.

Jadeja shares photo after workout at home

0

He is one of the best fielders in world cricket at the moment. But for Ravindra Jadeja, the lockdown days are proving tough just like it is for everybody else. There is no cricket around the corner, and the acrobatic India all-rounder is farthest away from the greens.

But that has not stopped the 31-year old cricketer from working on his fitness.

He is a “work in progress”, as per his tweet from his handle on Monday. He also posted a photo of him after an intense workout session at home.

Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif, rated as one of the best fielders the country produced, on Sunday said Jadeja is right up there in the current team led by Virat Kohli as far as fielding is concerned. He also said the team lacks a complete fielder.

“Fielding is like batting. A complete batsman is one who has all shots in his book. Fielding is like that. A complete fielder is one who knows how to slide, your throws should be accurate, you need to run fast, your hand technique needs to be correct,” Kaif said on Sportscreen’s YouTube page.

“So all these things combined, you get a proper fielder. Now you will get a lot of good fielders. Indian fielding has improved a lot. But I still feel we don’t have a complete package.

“Where you take slip catches, do well at short leg, at long on…that package is missing. But Ravindra Jadeja is brilliant and he is getting better with age.

“In slip fielding, the Indian team is a little behind, but overall…I see (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammad) Shami, Ishant (Sharma) they have improved a lot. So fast bowlers doing well on the field has helped. You see Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma is a good fielder. I still feel next level, package fielder is missing.”

This enzyme in men make them more vulnerable to Covid-19: Study

0

After several studies revealed that men are more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, evidence from a new larger research of several thousand patients shows that men have higher concentrations of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in their blood than women, a molecule that enables the novel coronavirus to infect healthy cells in men. This may help to explain why men are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than women, according to the researchers.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, also found that heart failure patients taking drugs targeting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), did not have higher concentrations of ACE2 in their blood.

“Our findings do not support the discontinuation of these drugs in COVID-19 patients as has been suggested by earlier reports,” said study co-author Adriaan Voors from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Some recent research suggested that RAAS inhibitors might increase concentrations of ACE2 in plasma the liquid part of blood thereby increasing the risk of COVID-19 for cardiovascular patients taking these drugs.

The current study indicates that this is not the case, although it looked only at ACE2 concentrations in plasma, not in tissues such as lung tissue.

“ACE2 is a receptor on the surface of cells. It binds to the coronavirus and allows it to enter and infect healthy cells after it is has been modified by another protein on the surface of the cell, called TMPRSS2,” Voors said.

“High levels of ACE2 are present in the lungs and, therefore, it is thought to play a crucial role in the progression of lung disorders related to COVID-19,” he added.

For the findings, the researchers measured ACE2 concentrations in blood samples taken from two groups of heart failure patients from 11 European countries.

There were 1,485 men and 537 women in the first group, the index cohort, which was designed to test the researchers’ hypotheses and research questions. Then the researchers validated their findings in the second group of 1,123 men and 575 women, the validation cohort.

The research team assessed the number of clinical factors that could play a role in ACE2 concentrations, including the use of ACE inhibitors, a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and coronary artery by-pass graft.

They found that male sex was the strongest predictor of elevated ACE2 concentrations. ACE2 is found not only in the lungs, but also in the heart, kidneys and the tissues lining blood vessels, and there are particularly high levels in the testes.

The researchers speculate that its regulation in the testes might partially explain higher ACE2 concentrations in men, and why men are more vulnerable to COVID-19.

Last month, the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, found that men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease as compared to women.

Another study from the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine showed that males over 50 with non-communicable chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart disease are at greater risk of death from coronavirus.

BCCI the richest board, have to be statesman as well: Gambhir

0

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir believes the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which is the richest cricket body in the world, needs to play the role of a statesman as well amid the crisis which the cricketing world is facing presently amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected show, Gambhir expressed his opinion on BCCI’s willingness of having Team India go into quarantine upon reaching Australia to ensure the much-anticipated Test series goes ahead towards the end of the year.

“Good on the BCCI. Fabulous. This is a very, very positive sign. They are probably looking at the bigger picture, it will change the mood of the country. Winning the series is a different thing, it’s very important but it will probably change the mood of both the countries as well. Not only India but probably for Australia,” said Gambhir.

“When BCCI is there… they are probably the richest board they have got to be a statesman as well. If India goes to Australia, then I have a lot of respect for the BCCI,” he added.

BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal while speaking to Sydney Morning Herald and The Age had said that a two-week quarantine after landing in Australia shouldn’t be a big deal once normalcy returns.

“There is no choice — everyone will have to do that. You would want to resume cricket. Two weeks is not that long a lockdown. That would be ideal for any sportsman because when you are in quarantine for such a long period, then going to another country and having a two-week lockdown it would be a good thing to do. We’ll have to see what the norms are posted this lockdown,” he said.

Gambhir also expressed his displeasure at Australia dethroning India from the number one spot in the latest ICC Test rankings.

“For me, India should be there (No. 1) because of Australia… I have serious doubts On what front have you given Australia the No. 1 Test ranking?

“They have been absolutely pathetic away from home, especially in the sub-continent,” he said.

According to him, India has been the most competitive side in Test cricket over the past few years.

“Yes, absolutely, 100 percent (India had been the most competitive side). If you have to see from the overall impact point of view, India has lost a series away from home but won against Australia. Hands down, they have been the most competitive side. They won a Test in South Africa, won a Test match in England… not many countries have done that,” he said.

The former left-handed batsman also took a dig at the World Test Championships points system and said: “No, I am not surprised (India slipping to No. 3). I don’t believe in points and ranking system. Probably the worst was there in the World Test Championship… that you win the same points when you win a Test match away from home. That’s ridiculous.”

Curfew imposed in Telangana town following communal clash

0

Authorities in Telangana’s Bhainsa town imposed a 24-hour curfew after a communal clash late Sunday night.

Trouble broke out in the communally sensitive town, in Nirmal district, after a person, allegedly in an inebriated condition, entered a place of worship and attacked 4-5 persons offering prayers. One of them sustained bleeding injuries.

Police said following the incident in the Shivajinagar area, two groups pelted stones at each other. Few people were injured in the stone-pelting while three houses and two vehicles were damaged. Police rushed to the scene and used force to disperse clashing groups.

Police imposed a 24-hour curfew to bring the situation under control and intensified patrolling across the town to prevent further clashes. About 15 people were detained in connection with the clash.

Nirmal district Superintendent of Police C. Shashidhar Raju, who rushed to the town, said the situation was now under control. “We have deployed more forces and closely monitoring the situation,” he said.

Karimnagar range in-charge DIG P. Pramod Kumar also visited the town on Monday and reviewed the situation.

This is the second communal clash in the town this year. Large scale violence had rocked the town in January, leaving scores of people injured. Several houses, shops, and vehicles were damaged in the clashes.

Bhaina, a major trading center, has witnessed a series of communal riots in recent years.

In 2008, nine people were killed in the riots that broke out during a religious procession. Six of the victims belonged to one family who were burnt alive in the Vatoli village near the town.

COVID-19: Study estimates Rs 80,000 cr loss to the Kerala economy

0

A study by the Kerala State Planning Board estimates a loss of Rs 80,000 crore to the state economy due to the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus scare.

The study — titled “Quick Assessment of the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Lockdown on Kerala’s Economy” — was undertaken after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked the Board to make a quick assessment of the state’s losses, particularly to the sectors most vulnerable to the impact of Covid-19 crisis.

The study pertains to the period between March 25 and May 3, 2020.

“For March 2020, assuming about 10 days of total production loss and decreased economic activity from the middle of March, we estimate the shortfall in value addition in the state to be roughly Rs 29,000 crore.

“For the first quarter of 2020-21, the entire month of April is affected, with near-total disruption in economic activity. It is expected that many of these would continue in May and subsequent months. This will mean a loss of roughly Rs 80,000 crore in the first quarter (of the fiscal), assuming the normal production level in 2020-21 to be about 5 percent higher than in 2019-20,” says the study.

Daily wage losses by self-employed and casual workers in Kerala for the lockdown study period is in the range of Rs 14,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore.

When it came to the shortfalls in Gross Value Added in the manufacturing sector from trade, hotels, and restaurants it has been estimated to be around Rs 17,000 crore.

The total losses in the agriculture sector, including plantation crops, are estimated at Rs 1,570.75 crore.

The losses for agricultural laborers due to loss of wages is estimated at about Rs 200.30 crore.

The report points out that the state should learn from the pandemic and work towards reducing its dependence on other states for food and food crops. With regard to rice cultivation, fallow wetlands must be identified across the State and cultivation entrusted to joint liability groups.

“An area of 25,000 hectares should be newly brought under paddy cultivation in the next two years. Vegetable production has increased commendably over the last few years and production doubled. However, we can undertake one more doubling exercise in vegetable production in the state in the next three to four years. Special measures have to be undertaken to ensure this. All available spaces in rural and urban areas should be utilized for this initiative,” says the report.

It also suggests that animal husbandry should be strengthened to attain a greater degree of self-sufficiency in commodities like eggs and meat.

“Kerala has to aim to reduce dependency on other states for egg supplies to just about 25 lakh eggs per day. We need to produce at least an additional 75 lakh eggs per day in the state. The “Kerala Chicken” scheme needs to be expanded over the next five years. A scheme to encourage rearing of male calves should also be thought of in this regard.”

Likewise, the total losses in the fisheries sector are estimated at Rs 1,371 crore. the study points out that the central government needs to consider a comprehensive economic package for the fisheries sector.
