Atal Pension Yojana achieves 2.23 crore enrolment in 5 yrs

0

The government’s flagship social security scheme, Atal Pension Yojana (APY), has achieved a milestone of 2.23 subscribers as it completes five years of its implementation.

Launched on May 9, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an objective of delivering old age income security, particularly to the workers in the unorganized sector, the scheme still remains relevant for addressing the challenges of the rapidly increasing aging population of India.

Under the scheme, the government provides the guarantee of minimum pension after 60 years of age.

In its sixth year, the scheme has now been implemented comprehensively across the country covering all the states and Union Territories with male to a female subscription ratio of 57:43.

The journey of APY over these five years has been phenomenal and as on May 9, 2020, the total enrolment under the scheme stood at 2,23,54,028.

During the first two years of its launch, almost 50 lakh subscribers were enrolled, which doubled to 100 lakh in the third year while the milestone of 1.50 crore was achieved in the fourth year.

In the last financial year, almost 70 lakhs subscribers were enrolled under the scheme.

Supratim Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), which administers the Atal Pension Yojana, said: “This feat of bringing in the most vulnerable sections of the society under the coverage of pension was possible only with the untiring efforts of public and private banks, regional rural banks, payments banks, small finance banks, department of posts and the support extended by the state-level bankers’ committees.”

APY can be subscribed by any Indian citizen in the age group of 18-40 years having a bank account and its uniqueness is attributable to three distinctive benefits. First, it provides a minimum guaranteed pension ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 on attaining 60 years of age. Secondly, the amount of pension is guaranteed for a lifetime to the spouse on the death of the subscriber. Finally, in the event of the death of both the subscriber and the spouse, the entire pension corpus is paid to the nominee.

“Going forward, we have a humongous task of increasing the pension coverage as only 5 percent of the eligible population has been covered under APY till date. Recognizing the social importance of this scheme, we continuously undertake proactive initiatives for achieving exponential growth and addressing unexpected scenarios as and when they arise,” Bandyopadhyay said.

Twitter introduces new labels, warnings to fight COVID-19 rumours

0

Twitter on Monday started introducing new labels and warning messages that will provide additional context and information on some tweets containing disputed or misleading information related to COVID-19.

Twitter said it will take action based on three broad categories:

These include “misleading information” — statements or assertions that have been confirmed to be false or misleading by subject-matter experts, such as public health authorities.

The other two categories are “disputed claims”, statements or assertions in which the accuracy, truthfulness, or credibility of the claim is genuinely contested or unknown; and “unverified claims”, information (which could be true or false) that is unconfirmed at the time it is shared.

Labels will be applied to misleading information and disputed claims.

These new labels will link to a Twitter-curated page or external trusted source containing additional information on the claims made within the tweet.

Depending on the propensity for harm and type of misleading information, warnings may also be applied to a tweet.

These warnings will inform people that the information in the tweet conflicts with public health experts’ guidance before they view it.

For example, a message saying “some or all of the content shared on this tweet conflicts with guidance from public health experts regarding COVID-19” may appear before a user tries to open a tweet with a disputed claim.

“Our teams are using and improving on internal systems to proactively monitor content related to COVID-19. These systems help ensure were not amplifying Tweets with these warnings or labels and detecting the high-visibility content quickly,” Twitter’s Head of Site Integrity Yoel Roth and Director for Public Policy Strategy Nick Pickles wrote in a blog post.

“Additionally, well continue to rely on trusted partners to identify content that is likely to result in offline harm. Given the dynamic situation, we will prioritize review and labeling of content that could lead to increased exposure or transmission,” they added.

Twitter, however, said that embedded tweets and tweets viewed by people not logged into Twitter may still appear without a label.

Amazon reportedly in talks to acquire struggling theatre chain AMC

0

Struggling movie theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings saw its stock zooming over 40 percent on Monday after a media report claimed that Jeff Bezos-owned Amazon is in talks to acquire it.

Daily Mail reported, citing sources, that AMC Entertainment Holdings and the e-commerce giant Amazon, also the parent of Amazon Studios, have previously held talks.

AMC is the parent of the AMC and Carmike theatre chains in the US and the Odeon Cinemas chain in the UK.

AMC has been struggling since the COVID-19 pandemic led to shutdowns of movie theatres across the globe.

“A deal would mark a pivotal moment in the history of the film industry and would give the streaming giants an even tighter grip on Hollywood,” said the report.

AMC is reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy, giving Amazon the opportunity to snap it up on the cheap.

“Amazon is understood to have held talks about running the National Lottery in recent months and is said to be eyeing a takeover of satellite company OneWeb, the British firm backed by Sir Richard Branson, which filed for bankruptcy in March in the US,” the report added.

AMC which has about 10,000 screens around the world is now valued at just $420million.

Last month, AMC announced it would no longer screen films made by Universal Pictures, one of the largest studios in Hollywood and behind new Bond film ‘No Time To Die’.

Amazon declined to comment on its interest in AMC. AMC also did not comment on the report.

Speculations fly, but airlines remain grounded

0

Speculations were rife on Monday regarding the opening up of domestic passenger flight operations in the coming few days.

According to industry insiders, these speculations got triggered after a team of senior bureaucrats from the Civil Aviation Ministry visited the Delhi airport on Sunday.

The visit was to inspect the preparations made by the airport for the eventual restart of passenger operations.

In fact, the senior leadership of the airport’s management accompanied the Ministry team at Terminal 3.

Lately, various machines to sanitize and smoothly manage passenger entry and exit from the terminal building have been installed at the airport.

The airport has made several technology-based unique facilities operational such as UV (ultraviolet) based tunnels to disinfect checkpoint trays and baggage, mobile UV tower to disinfect surfaces in the terminal area, and hand-held UV devices.

In addition, passenger trolley disinfection systems and walk-in shoe sanitizer mats are also unique facilities for passenger safety.

Besides, the limited re-start of railway services from Tuesday has also given life to the idea that immediate approval for the civil aviation operations will be given.

“We expect to get a notification soon on the restart of services from the government and the bookings thereafter,” a senior executive with a travel products company told IANS.

However, there was no official comment on the same.

Even the airline industry contends that it will take time for the operations to restart, as booking inventories are required to be loaded on to online platforms, and the necessary airworthiness certificates obtained for the grounded aircraft.

“There are many areas that need to be addressed like route planning. We have no idea on how many services will be allowed in phases and from where to where these services will be allowed to operate,” an airline industry insider told IANS.

At present, all domestic and international passenger services are banned except for cargo or flights for which special clearances have been taken from the regulator.

In biggest spike so far, Telangana reports 79 new cases

0

In the biggest spike so far, Telangana on Monday reported 79 Covid-19 cases, all from Greater Hyderabad, taking the state’s tally to 1,275.

For a third consecutive day, the state saw a huge jump in the number of cases. As many as 142 cases were reported in three days and barring five migrants, all were recorded in Greater Hyderabad.

There was no immediate official word on how the cases suddenly surged and which are the areas recording new infections.

According to the director of public health and family welfare, 50 people were discharged from hospitals. With this, the number of people cured/discharged rose to 801. There are 444 patients undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad.

The death toll remained unchanged at 30 as no death was reported on Monday.

The Covid-19 cases were showing a declining trend for the last 7-10 days and the government was confident that there would be no cases by May 8. However, the sudden spike has dealt a blow to the government’s efforts.

The surge continued despite the focus of authorities on Hyderabad, the worst among the state’s 33 districts. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which covers Hyderabad and its surroundings, account for nearly 60 percent of all the cases registered so far.

Meanwhile, the number of districts that reported no new cases for the past 14 days further mounted to 26. Three districts have not reported a single case.

The state has already requested the Centre to upgrade 14 districts from the orange zone to the green zone and three districts from the red zone to the orange zone.

This will leave the state with just three red zone districts – Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Medchal.

Before that, 384 cases were reported in a day on May 3.

Manmohan Singh tests negative for Covid-19, shifted out of ICU

0

In a news which is expected to bring a sense of relief to the Congress party, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been shifted out of an intensive care unit (ICU) to a private ward, while his Covid-19 test result has also returned negative.

On Sunday, Singh was admitted to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) after he complained of chest pain and breathlessness, sources said.

Singh was brought to the AIIMS at 8.45 p.m. on Saturday. The former Prime Minister was subjected to several medical tests, including the one to determine whether he was infected with the deadly coronavirus. He is under the supervision of Nitish Nayak.

In 2009, Singh underwent a successful coronary by-pass surgery at AIIMS, a complex beating-heart operation that took nearly 14 hours.

PM talks ‘opening up of economy’ as Mamata, KCR want extended lockdown

0

“I am working on ways on how to open up the economy”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told all the Chief Ministers of different states and Union Territories on Monday during his fifth video conference meeting with them, said sources.

Modi added that going forward, the economic activities which have been restarted will gain steam. He also asked the state governments to ensure that rural India remains free from the Covid-19 crisis.

While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had hit out at the Centre asking the PM to respect the federal structure, contrastingly PM Modi sent out a message of working together. He is believed to have told the Chief Ministers that “We will win this war against Corona because of your energy and help”.

However, there had been a few Chief Ministers who couldn’t make themselves heard during the 5.5 hours long video conference. PM Modi asked them to send their suggestions by May 15.

Though states like Maharashtra, Punjab, West Bengal, and Telangana have insisted on extending the current lockdown, there have been states like Delhi that wanted greater freedom to open up the economy save the containment zones or Andhra Pradesh that pitched for inter-state transport service’s resumption.

While no formal word has come so far, some more relaxations, particularly with an eye to providing a much-needed push to the economy, may be given by the Centre.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray vociferously made a pitch for the extension of the current lockdown, stating lifting it will grossly impact the state’s efforts to contain the virus. Maharashtra has been the worst-hit with more than 22,000 cases of Covid-19.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was believed to be in a fiery mood, also pitched for the extension. Punjab too is inclined towards an extension given the spike in numbers after many migrants from Maharashtra reached back home. Earlier, in an exclusive interview to IANS, Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh blamed Maharashtra government’s “negligence” for Punjab’s “sufferings”.

Amarinder Singh also sought a well-crafted exit policy and economic empowerment. He urged PM Modi that zoning should be left to states. He also sought fiscal aid for states to meet at least 33 percent of committed liabilities.

This was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fifth such interaction. Sources said the focus of the meeting was on further increasing economic activities and on tackling the pandemic in containment zones as the lockdown 3.0 is to end on May 17.

The lockdown, enforced on March 25, was originally supposed to end on April 14. It was then extended to May 3, and then again to May 17.

Indian Railways issues 54K reservations in 3 hours

0

The Indian Railways on Monday issued reservation to more than 54,000 passengers within three hours of commencement of the booking.

On Sunday, the Indian Railways had announced that 15 pairs of ‘special air-conditioned’ trains will depart from New Delhi to several parts of the country.

“By 9.15 p.m., approximately 30,000 PNRs had been generated and reservations were issued to more than 54,000 passengers,” Indian Railways said in a statement.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) had started taking bookings at 4 p.m. on Monday, but within minutes its website crashed due to heavy online traffic as passengers waiting for over a month-and-a-half immediately started logging into it.

The railways quickly issued a statement, saying, “Data pertaining to special trains is being fed in the IRCTC website. Train ticket bookings will be available in a short while. Please wait.”

After a delay of two hours, the bookings commenced.

The railways had suspended passenger, mail and express train services on March 25 in the wake of the nationwide lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since then, the railways has been running freight and special parcel trains to ensure the supply of essential items.

The railways has started to run Shramik Special trains from May 1 onwards to transport stranded migrant workers, students, pilgrims and tourists.

Give power to states to decide on economic activities: Baghel

0

During a video conference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Ministers of all the states on Monday, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel said the state governments should be given the power to decide on conducting economic activities within their respective states.

“The state governments should be given the responsibility of designating the red, green, and orange zones with regard to the coronavirus infection,” Baghel said.

He said the current situation will change with the resumption of rail service. Regular train, air and inter-state bus services should be started in consultation with the state governments, the Chief Minister said, besides suggesting 200 days’ wages under MNREGA.

He also suggested allowing the expenditure of the SDMRC budget for transportation of migrant workers.

Economic activities have been badly affected in Chhattisgarh due to the coronavirus induced lockdown, resulting in loss of revenues. The economically weaker sections of the society are the most affected due to the lockdown, Baghel said.

The Chief Minister also urged the Prime Minister to keep the state’s fiscal deficit as an exception this year at 5 percent of GSDP besides relaxing the borrowing limit to 6 percent of GSDP.

Baghel also demanded an assistance of Rs 30,000 crore for the state. The Chief Minister said that in order to provide relief to the needy people of Chhattisgarh in this hour of crisis, the amount, which was donated to the PM-CARE Fund by the industrial institutions of the state as CSR, should be transferred to the state.

“FCI has taken 24 lakh metric tonnes of rice from the state, I request the Prime Minister to allow it to be increased to 31.11 lakh metric tones,” the Chief Minister said.

According to the government, a total of 11,862 samples were tested taking to total to 2.54 lakh to date. Testing of 1,335 samples is under process.

Chennai continued to see the highest number of infections at 538 followed by Tiruvallur (97) and Chengalpattu (90).

The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 went up to 427.

The total number of active cases in Tamil Nadu stands at 5,895.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister K.Palaniswami flagged off five mobile X-ray vans which will go to a person’s place and take a chest X-ray to detect contagious chest diseases and also Covid-19 related chest contagious diseases.

Citing the increasing Covid-19 cases in Chennai, Palaniswami requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to restart normal train operations to the city.

Inter-state transport crucial for economic survival: AP CM to PM

0

Andhra Pradesh on Monday pitched for the relaxation of lockdown while enforcing measures to contain the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Amid the national debate on continuation of the Covid-19 induced lockdown, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy stressed on the importance of ensuring hassle-free movement of raw materials and people, for boosting the manufacturing sector.

During his video conference interaction with the Prime Minister on Monday, Jagan Reddy pointed out that despite relaxation on the transport of goods, transporters are facing hurdles in many states across the country. He emphasized that the continuation of the lockdown will result in economic hardships.

In his fifth video interaction with Chief Ministers since the Covid-19 outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday connected with CMs of all the states to take stock of the national mood on the way forward after the extended lockdown ends on May 17.

Describing how the closure of markets all over the country has adversely affected the agricultural revenues of Andhra Pradesh, Reddy called for the removal of all kinds of hindrances to inter-state transportation of goods and raw materials.

The Andhra Pradesh CM also called for the lifting of sanctions on public transports. “Whether it’s migrant laborer or people in offices, if they don’t have access to public transport, the economic situation will not normalize,” he told the Prime Minister.

Observing that putting in place social distancing and medical infrastructure requires funding to the tune of Rs 16,000 crore, he requested the Central government’s help for Andhra Pradesh, which is “as good as a new state”.

Stating that 87,000 MSMEs in the state are providing employment to 9.7 lakh persons, Reddy requested the PM to consider a 6-month waiver of interest on loans given to MSMEs.

Google testing ‘curbside pickup’ badge for local shopping ads

0

As online shopping grows in COVID-19 times, Google on Monday launched a “curbside pickup” badge for local shopping ads to help customers find products locally and avoid delays in shipping.

According to Google, searches for “in-stock” grew by 70 percent during late March-early April across the globe.

To help customers find out where they can shop safely, Google is giving retailers a new option.

“We’re here to help you connect local shoppers with the products they need quickly, and promote your safer fulfillment options, like in-store and curbside pickup,” the company said in a statement.

Using local inventory ads, retailers can show users that the products they are searching for are available for nearby store pickup.

“Now, you can indicate if you offer curbside pickup, right in your local inventory ads,” said Darshan Kantak, Vice President, Product Management.

This feature is available in the countries where local inventory ads have launched: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.

The curbside pickup badge can show on products available for store pickup.

The local inventory ads curbside pickup badge is currently in beta and available to advertisers who have completed the onboarding for store pickup.

“If you aren’t running local inventory ads, you can still let customers know whether your store offers pickup, delivery, or curbside pickup,” said Google.

Using Google My Business, people can add or edit attributes to their Business Profile that appear on Search and Maps. This feature is available globally.

Telangana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bengal among those wanting lockdown extension

0

At the Prime Minister’s fifth video conference with Chief Ministers of different states and Union Territories, at least five states advocated an extension of the current lockdown. However, they were outnumbered by many states and UTs who asked for more relaxation in terms of opening up the economy while keeping certain restrictions.

Sources say the states that demanded an extension included Telangana, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.

Earlier, in an exclusive interview to IANS, Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh blamed Maharashtra government’s “negligence” for Punjab’s “sufferings”.

Amarinder Singh also sought a well-crafted exit policy and economic empowerment. He urged PM Modi that zoning should be left to states. He also sought fiscal aid for states to meet at least 33 percent of committed liabilities.

There were at least two Chief Ministers – of Telangana and Tamil Nadu – who raised their objections to the resumption of railway services. Both Chief Ministers K. Chandrasekhar Rao and E. Palaniswami claimed it will undo all the gains of lockdown and the “time” for the resumption of railway services hasn’t come, yet. Last night, the Centre announced that from May 12, it will slowly restart train services.

However, there were others who demanded more relaxation. One of them being Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He not only wanted a relaxation of rules but demanded resumption of inter-state transport service. However, he stated that Andhra Pradesh requires Rs 16,000 crore immediately to fight Covid-19.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is believed to have told the PM to ensure economic activities across the national capital save the containment zones. Interestingly, the entire Delhi comes under the red zone.

Andhra Pradesh bringing back their citizens

0

While few states in the country have already started bringing back their citizens who are stuck in different parts of the world, Andhra Pradesh COVID taskforce has on Saturday appealed the people stranded in other countries should be prepared as flights are being readied to bring them back to AP.

Speaking to media on Saturday, Andhra transportation department chief secretary Krishna Babu said “Over 30,000 people have registered to return back to the state and we are offering both paid and free quarantine centers with all facilities. As soon they arrive in AP, we will be conduct COVID tests and send them to respective quarantine centers or hospitals if needed.

External Affairs Ministry has accepted our request to tag people of East Godavari & North Costal districts to Vizag Intl airport, Nellore & Rayalaseema district people to Tirupathi airport, and the rest of the districts to Vijayawada airport. But, since we do not have landing facilities for white-bodied aircrafts from long distance like North America, South America, South East Asian nations, these flights will take landing at Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai from where we are arranging hopping flights.”

Announcing that Harish Kumar and Babu Rao are nodal officers for Delhi and AP, he further said “The first flight coming from US will arrive in Hyderabad on 11 May. While symptomatic persons will be sent to the nearest COVID centre, the asymptomatic passengers will be hotel quarantined for two weeks and we are making necessary arrangements with minimal cost. After 2 weeks of quarantine, these ex-pats should also take up 14 more days of home quarantine.”

Until now, 11 passenger trains have left AP and 11868 migrant were ferried to their respective places. Also, government is set to arrange 14 more trains to other parts of India. While Jharkhand has allowed to send one train, Andhra is yet to receive an approval from Rajasthan and Bengal to send the trains to their states. The COVID taskforce chairman said that Andhra government is paying for train fares of all migrants besides giving Rs 500 to each person.

Google AdMob most popular mobile ads platform in India

0

Google AdMob is the most popular mobile advertising platform in India, followed by Appnext and InMobi in the second and third positions, respectively, a Counterpoint Research study said on Monday.

Among app developers who use advertising as a main source of revenue, about 61 percent are using Google AdMob, while 13 percent use Appnext and 12 percent use InMobi, revealed the research.

The study also revealed that more than half the mobile app developers have tried to monetize app data. Among developers who have not tried to monetize app data in the past, almost half of them are interested in doing so in the future.

Working as an “outsourced app development partner” for other companies is another major source of revenue for app developers in India.

Smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are playing an important role as a medium for app developers to capture or maintain customer base through the pre-installation of apps, said the study.

Developers use OEM-level deeply integrated app customization or optimization to provide a better user experience.

Almost half the app developers have worked with smartphone OEMs in the last two years to create deeper integration in their apps, according to the Counterpoint “Consumer Lens” study.

“The existing Android developer ecosystem is a huge added advantage for Google. Additionally, easier integration and better monetization are two main factors where AdMob is leading over the others,” Senior Analyst, Pavel Naiya, said in a statement.

“Other important factors like security features, fraud detection, better reach, multiple ad format support, and affiliated revenue sharing make Google AdMob more attractive to mobile app developers.”

The research also pointed out that Facebook’s investment in Jio Platforms Limited opens up the possibility of the emergence of a new mobile advertisement platform serving ads to users beyond its app ecosystem and reaching close to 400 million Jio users.

For the study, an enterprise-level survey was conducted with mobile app developers in India across top cities.

Nayanatara About Her Wedding Plans

0

On the eve of Mothers Day yesterday, many celebrities took to their social media pages to reveal their love for their moms. And each and every post has a special connect we must say as everyone spread warmth and magic with their words. But one post that is quite crazy has come from director Vignesh Shivan.

Though haven’t said it with own mouths, both super starlet Nayantara and lyric writer turned director Vignesh Shivan are living together in Chennai from a long time. The love birds want to get married soon but they don’t talk about their relationship in the public. However, they share lots of pictures that showcase what is going on between them. Even other day, Vignesh shared a picture of Nayan holding a foreign boy on the eve of Mothers Day.

His caption for the picture read, “Happy Mother’s Day to the mother of the child in the hands of the mother of my future children”. He is talking about them getting married and Nayanatara delivering his kids, which sounds crazy and also like telling the world about what is to come.

No doubt, this became the topic of discussion in Kollywood circles as Vignesh is talking about kids amidst rumours that he and Nayan have tied the knot already.

Pawan enthusiasm in supporting the Lotus Party

0

Pawan Kalyan’s BJP bhajana is going overboard. When Pawan’s Janasena officially join hands with BJP in Andhra Pradesh, a big change is observed in Pawan Kalyan. With each passing day, Pawan is showing his over enthusiasm in supporting the Lotus Party and going to every possible extent to impress the top bosses of the party. His tweets on BJP netas are rather surprising to his fans and Janasena party leaders.

The same Pawan had earlier made critical comments of BJP during 2019 elections. If go few years back, Pawan is the man who officially starts fight against BJP on the injustice done to AP. He had stated that the Centre had given ‘Pachipoyina Laddus’ (rotten Laddus) to Andhra Pradesh state. He had literally targeted BJP and Modi back then and made several sharp comments.

Quite contrary to this, Pawan has now started heaping praises on BJP leaders. From national leaders to AP BJP leaders to Telangana BJP leaders, Pawan has been trying to please them. In fact, he is retweeting many of their tweets. This sharp U-turn on BJP is not digestible to his fans and party workers.

Like TDP went silent on BJP after 2019 elections result and the ruling YSRCP is always trying to stay in good book of BJP, with Pawan directly doing BJP Bhajana, who is there to fight with Centre on issues like Special Category Status, Financial Aid to the state have not been kept. Several other issues in the AP Reorganizaction Act are still pending.
