Telangana CM urges PM not to restart train services

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to allow the resumption of train services to contain the spread of coronavirus.

He made the request during the video conference the Prime Minister had with the Chief Ministers of all the states.

He said the movement of people through trains would make the task of monitoring the Covid-19 situation difficult and this may lead to the spread of the virus from one place to the other.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, told Modi that since conducting tests on all those traveling through trains or keeping them in quarantine is not possible, trains should not be operated at this stage.

Pointing out that several major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad have a large number of Covid-19 cases, he said if trains were operated between these cities, there would be a big movement of people from one place to the other and it would not be possible to keep track of them.

KCR told the PM that since the chances of an early end to Covid-19 appear remote, the people will have to be taught to live with it. “First of all we have to remove fear from them and make them learn to live with coronavirus,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the efforts were being made to prepare a vaccine for coronavirus and hoped that the first vaccine will come from India. “Companies in Hyderabad are also working hard. There are chances of the first vaccine being developed in Hyderabad. It is likely to be available in July-August. The situation will change with the availability of the vaccine,” he said.

On the issue of migrant workers, KCR said all states should show empathy. He said the migrant workers were desperate to go home to meet their family members and hence, they should be allowed to visit them.

Hailing the decision to operate Shramik trains, KCR said Telangana was sending the migrant workers who want to go home. He pointed out that workers from Bihar were returning to Telangana to work in rice mills.

KCR reiterated the demand that the loans of the states be rescheduled on the lines of reschedulement of the loans of farmers. He urged the Centre to take initiative in this regard.

0

Search engine giant Google on Monday launched Grow with Google OnAir that will help impart free digital skills training to everyone in the US and Canada for the first time.

The in-person ‘Grow with Google’ was launched in 2017 to help Americans get the digital skills they need to succeed.

To date, the Grow with Google program has trained more than 4 million Americans on digital skills.

“Though we’re no longer able to gather in person, that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. So we’re announcing virtual programs from Grow with Google that can help,” Jesse Haines, Director, Grow with Google said in a statement.

The aim is to empower people — particularly job seekers and small businesses — who are facing uncertainty and looking for digital skills training to help them increase their economic potential.

Google said it will offer digital skills training, interviews with career experts and programming from partners including Merit America and the National Congress of American Indians.

Topics will include “How to manage your business remotely in times of uncertainty” and “How to improve your resume with four practical strategies.”

After attending a Grow with Google OnAir workshop, attendees who are looking for more personalized help can register for a free one-on-one coaching session with a Googler.

“In addition to Grow with Google OnAir, which is available across the US, we continue to support our team of local Digital Coaches and our network of more than 7,000 local partner organizations, so that they can teach virtual workshops in their communities,” said Google.

Recovery rate improved, no community transmission: Health Ministry

0

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Monday said that the recovery rate of the Covid-19 patients in the country improved up to 31.15 percent with a total 1,559 individuals cured from the disease in the last 24 hours.

Addressing the daily press conference here, Joint Secretary, Health, Lav Agarwal said: “While at least 4,213 new cases were reported since yesterday, there are 1559 people who have recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the recovery rate to 31.15 percent.

“A total number of cases in India is 67,152 so far, of which 44,029 people are under medical supervision and a total of 20,917 people have been cured from the disease.”

India on Monday saw the highest jump in the coronavirus cases reported in a single day, and 97 fatalities in 24 hours.

The Health Ministry avoided mentioning the number of fatalities and remained in the denial mode whether it constitutes a community transmission or not, during the press conference.

Asked by the media whether or not the country has entered the community transmission stage, Agarwal said: “We have found few clusters and have noticed relatively large outbreak in a few places. Even Director, AIIMS said that if we do not contain the zones properly, the rate of transmission will become higher. Therefore it is important for us to maintain at this stage only and scale-up containment efforts and ensure that we don’t go at the community transmission stage.”

India is currently under lockdown 3.0 with controlled relaxations by the Central and state governments.

Telangana CM’s sense of humor

0

The Telangana CM once again proved that he is very good at giving left and right when he slammed at the center for not lending the helping hand but above that levying prices on migrants travel. He even proved that he is equally good at appreciating the good work when he showers praises on Kerala’s exemplary model in flattening and crushing the curve to the ground with minimal damage.

KCR, though extended the lockdown to 29th of May, his explanation in need for opening the liquor shops and the imposing low percent tax than other states appeared agreeable, be it the reason for local breweries, liquor licenses or the state revenue. He pleaded the public to cooperate with him, and he also warned them to follow the guidelines, saying that saving lives is important.

Well, the Telangana CM’s sense of humor needs a special mention here. When the CM spoke about the valuation of Intermediate examinations, he said it as ‘invigilation’ ‘instead of ‘valuation’. It made them all smile when the CM said it’s been a long time since he came out of college and forgot the word.

KCR never minces the words during his address to media and state, or even when he is answering the questions shot from journos at the meet. There is undoubtedly no other Chief Minister in the country with so much clarity and knowledge on any aspect given, which makes most us feel strongly that he should not be the leader for just Telangana but needs to be a national leader leading the nation with his dynamism and diligence.

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video conference with Chief Ministers of the all the states is underway. In this meeting, Modi is discussing about the lockdown that is going to end on May 17th. Over the last week or so, there is a huge spike in Corona cases in the country and in this view, Modi is chalking out a plan. Accordingly he held this conference with CMs.

In this conference, Modi is said to have informed the CMs to take all the measures to restrict Corona virus from spreading to the rural parts i.e, villages where the population is more than the tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

On the migrant workers walking towards to their places, Modi reportedly said “It is Human nature to go back to their places and there is nothing wrong in it.” However, there is lack of coordination between the Railways and the states and so many migrant workers are getting stranded at cities. For them the Railways has changed the plan too.

In this conference Modi appreciated the CMs for their efforts in containing the virus but added that still there is a lot to be done.

Super Star Rajinikanth set to enter politics

While many countries including India are going through a lengthy lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19, few states in our nation relaxed the restriction on selling of liquor. As per guidelines of government of India, only 10 people can attend a funeral and 20 to a marriage, but govts allowed opening of wine shops which eventually led to people thronging in large numbers.

The governments are already inviting a lot criticism all over and freshly, Superstar Rajinikanth expressed his discontent on AIADMK govt in Tamil Nadu for allowing the sale of liquor in state. This came a day after Tamil Nadu regime sought the Supreme Court to issue a stay on Madras High Court’s order to shut down TASMAC stores and stop selling liquor.

“If AIADMK government reopens liquor stores at this time, they must forget the dream of coming to power again,” warned Rajini through a tweet and said that ‘state government should look for other sources of revenue but not by selling liquor during this crisis’.

With Rajini set to enter politics, this warning to state government has caught everyone’s attention. It is known that the Kabali star will take a plunge into politics in the coming elections. He declared that he won’t aim to become Chief Minister, but one of his party’s legislator will be the CM candidate.

Has Vizag gas leak contaminated water bodies?

0

A study is on over the impact of the gas leak from LG Polymers on the overall environment in the surrounding villages while authorities have sent samples from water bodies including a major water reservoir for analysis amid public apprehension that they were contaminated by chemical toxins.

Following the Styrene gas leak from the chemical plant that killed 12 people and affected hundreds of others on May 7, authorities stopped drinking water supply from the Megahdrigedda reservoir, one of the sources of water for the port city.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) said the supply from Meghadrigedda was stopped immediately as a precautionary measure.

“The water will not be drawn from Meghadrigedda till tests are conducted and it is proved that the water is safe for drinking,” GVMC Commissioner G. Srijana said.

She, along with officials from the regional water testing laboratory, inspected the reservoir on Sunday.

Water from Mudasarlova, Yeleru, and Thatipudi reservoirs is being used to meet the city’s requirements.

Officials said since Meghadrigedda caters to the water needs of only a few areas, the stoppage had no major impact on the supply.

Locals claimed the reservoir was affected due to leakage of chemical toxins from the plant as layers of particles were seen floating on it and it also resulted in the death of fish in the water body.

The gas leak is reported to have polluted other water bodies in five villages surrounding the plant. The samples from all water bodies were collected and sent for analysis.

GVMC officials said the impact would be known only after the receipt of the rest results.

Meanwhile, a team of experts from CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Institute conducting an environmental impact assessment of the gas leak has suggested that water tanks in the affected areas be emptied out and cleaned thoroughly.

Villagers, who would be returning home later in the day, have been advised not to use the provisions, including groceries, which were left out in the open.

Officials have declared the five villages safe for the return of their residents. However, there are apprehensions over the extent of the impact the gas leak had on the environment.

Some experts said the bacteria from the dead cattle and other animals could pose a health hazard for the residents upon their return.

The people are also worried about the impact the chemical toxins could have on the quality of groundwater. A huge quantity of water was sprinkled on the leaking tanker in the plant for the last five days to keep its temperature under control. Water was also sprayed in the villages to reduce the gas density in the air.

Locals said this water could have polluted the groundwater as well as flowed into water bodies around the villages.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister K. Kannababu said the state government has constituted a committee of medical and health experts to study the impact of the gas leak on the health of the public.

Passengers need to arrive 90 minutes before train departure: RPF DG

0

Even as the Indian Railways is all set to start the services of the 15 pair of air-conditioned trains from Tuesday equivalent to the Rajdhani Express, the passengers will need to arrive at the stations 90 minutes before the scheduled departure of the trains.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) Director General (DG) Arun Kumar told IANS, “The RPF is making adequate arrangements in view of the resumption of the gradual train services amid the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He said, “We will ask the passengers to arrive at the railway station 90 minutes before the departure time of the train.”

The RPF official said, “All the passengers coming to the railway station will be thermally screened before entering the station premises.”

He also said that the entry of passengers will be closed 15 minutes before the departure.

He further said that the national transporter will not be providing blanket and bedsheets in the train and passengers need to bring their own pillows and blankets.

He further said that the RPF team will be also there on the train to ensure the protocol of social distancing.

The remarks of the senior officer came amid the Indian Railways announcement to run 15 pairs of air-conditioned trains from New Delhi to several cities across the country almost 45 days after suspending the passenger, mail and express train services to combat the spread of Covid-19.

On Sunday, the national transporter announced to gradually resume the train services with 15 pair AC trains equivalent to the Rajdhani Express from New Delhi.

The official further said that in the AC three-tier coaches, 52 passengers will be allowed while in AC two-tier coaches, 48 passengers will be allowed keeping in mind the protocol of social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The reservation of these special AC trains will start from Monday at 4 p.m. and passengers can book the tickets from the IRCTC website or mobile application.

The railway official further said that the ticket booking counters at the railway stations shall remain closed and no counter tickets, including platform tickets, shall be issued.

“Only passengers with valid confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the railway stations. It will be mandatory for the passengers to wear face cover and undergo screening at departure and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board the train. Further details including train schedule will be issued separately in due course,” the official added.

The Indian Railways, which has suspended the passenger, mail and express trains from March 25 amid the nationwide lockdown to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has started to run the Shramik Special train from May 1 to transport the stranded migrant workers, students, pilgrims and tourists.

Till 10 a.m. on Monday, the national transporter has operated 468 Shramik Special trains and transported over 4.7 lakh people across several states.

The official said that 363 trains had reached its destination and 105 trains are in transit.

The highest number of 9 positive cases were reported from Kurnool and Chittoor districts, while Anantapur district reported 8 cases, and Guntur district reported 5 cases in the last 24 hours. Krishna, and Visakhapatnam districts reported 3 cases each, while Nellore district reported only 1 case. Six districts did not report any new cases on Monday morning.

Jadeja shares photo after workout at home

0

He is one of the best fielders in world cricket at the moment. But for Ravindra Jadeja, the lockdown days are proving tough just like it is for everybody else. There is no cricket around the corner, and the acrobatic India all-rounder is farthest away from the greens.

But that has not stopped the 31-year old cricketer from working on his fitness.

He is a “work in progress”, as per his tweet from his handle on Monday. He also posted a photo of him after an intense workout session at home.

Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif, rated as one of the best fielders the country produced, on Sunday said Jadeja is right up there in the current team led by Virat Kohli as far as fielding is concerned. He also said the team lacks a complete fielder.

“Fielding is like batting. A complete batsman is one who has all shots in his book. Fielding is like that. A complete fielder is one who knows how to slide, your throws should be accurate, you need to run fast, your hand technique needs to be correct,” Kaif said on Sportscreen’s YouTube page.

“So all these things combined, you get a proper fielder. Now you will get a lot of good fielders. Indian fielding has improved a lot. But I still feel we don’t have a complete package.

“Where you take slip catches, do well at short leg, at long on…that package is missing. But Ravindra Jadeja is brilliant and he is getting better with age.

“In slip fielding, the Indian team is a little behind, but overall…I see (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammad) Shami, Ishant (Sharma) they have improved a lot. So fast bowlers doing well on the field has helped. You see Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma is a good fielder. I still feel next level, package fielder is missing.”
