This enzyme in men make them more vulnerable to Covid-19: Study

0

After several studies revealed that men are more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, evidence from a new larger research of several thousand patients shows that men have higher concentrations of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in their blood than women, a molecule that enables the novel coronavirus to infect healthy cells in men. This may help to explain why men are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than women, according to the researchers.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, also found that heart failure patients taking drugs targeting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), did not have higher concentrations of ACE2 in their blood.

“Our findings do not support the discontinuation of these drugs in COVID-19 patients as has been suggested by earlier reports,” said study co-author Adriaan Voors from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Some recent research suggested that RAAS inhibitors might increase concentrations of ACE2 in plasma the liquid part of blood thereby increasing the risk of COVID-19 for cardiovascular patients taking these drugs.

The current study indicates that this is not the case, although it looked only at ACE2 concentrations in plasma, not in tissues such as lung tissue.

“ACE2 is a receptor on the surface of cells. It binds to the coronavirus and allows it to enter and infect healthy cells after it is has been modified by another protein on the surface of the cell, called TMPRSS2,” Voors said.

“High levels of ACE2 are present in the lungs and, therefore, it is thought to play a crucial role in the progression of lung disorders related to COVID-19,” he added.

For the findings, the researchers measured ACE2 concentrations in blood samples taken from two groups of heart failure patients from 11 European countries.

There were 1,485 men and 537 women in the first group, the index cohort, which was designed to test the researchers’ hypotheses and research questions. Then the researchers validated their findings in the second group of 1,123 men and 575 women, the validation cohort.

The research team assessed the number of clinical factors that could play a role in ACE2 concentrations, including the use of ACE inhibitors, a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and coronary artery by-pass graft.

They found that male sex was the strongest predictor of elevated ACE2 concentrations. ACE2 is found not only in the lungs, but also in the heart, kidneys and the tissues lining blood vessels, and there are particularly high levels in the testes.

The researchers speculate that its regulation in the testes might partially explain higher ACE2 concentrations in men, and why men are more vulnerable to COVID-19.

Last month, the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, found that men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease as compared to women.

Another study from the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine showed that males over 50 with non-communicable chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart disease are at greater risk of death from coronavirus.

BCCI the richest board, have to be statesman as well: Gambhir

0

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir believes the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which is the richest cricket body in the world, needs to play the role of a statesman as well amid the crisis which the cricketing world is facing presently amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected show, Gambhir expressed his opinion on BCCI’s willingness of having Team India go into quarantine upon reaching Australia to ensure the much-anticipated Test series goes ahead towards the end of the year.

“Good on the BCCI. Fabulous. This is a very, very positive sign. They are probably looking at the bigger picture, it will change the mood of the country. Winning the series is a different thing, it’s very important but it will probably change the mood of both the countries as well. Not only India but probably for Australia,” said Gambhir.

“When BCCI is there… they are probably the richest board they have got to be a statesman as well. If India goes to Australia, then I have a lot of respect for the BCCI,” he added.

BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal while speaking to Sydney Morning Herald and The Age had said that a two-week quarantine after landing in Australia shouldn’t be a big deal once normalcy returns.

“There is no choice — everyone will have to do that. You would want to resume cricket. Two weeks is not that long a lockdown. That would be ideal for any sportsman because when you are in quarantine for such a long period, then going to another country and having a two-week lockdown it would be a good thing to do. We’ll have to see what the norms are posted this lockdown,” he said.

Gambhir also expressed his displeasure at Australia dethroning India from the number one spot in the latest ICC Test rankings.

“For me, India should be there (No. 1) because of Australia… I have serious doubts On what front have you given Australia the No. 1 Test ranking?

“They have been absolutely pathetic away from home, especially in the sub-continent,” he said.

According to him, India has been the most competitive side in Test cricket over the past few years.

“Yes, absolutely, 100 percent (India had been the most competitive side). If you have to see from the overall impact point of view, India has lost a series away from home but won against Australia. Hands down, they have been the most competitive side. They won a Test in South Africa, won a Test match in England… not many countries have done that,” he said.

The former left-handed batsman also took a dig at the World Test Championships points system and said: “No, I am not surprised (India slipping to No. 3). I don’t believe in points and ranking system. Probably the worst was there in the World Test Championship… that you win the same points when you win a Test match away from home. That’s ridiculous.”

Curfew imposed in Telangana town following communal clash

0

Authorities in Telangana’s Bhainsa town imposed a 24-hour curfew after a communal clash late Sunday night.

Trouble broke out in the communally sensitive town, in Nirmal district, after a person, allegedly in an inebriated condition, entered a place of worship and attacked 4-5 persons offering prayers. One of them sustained bleeding injuries.

Police said following the incident in the Shivajinagar area, two groups pelted stones at each other. Few people were injured in the stone-pelting while three houses and two vehicles were damaged. Police rushed to the scene and used force to disperse clashing groups.

Police imposed a 24-hour curfew to bring the situation under control and intensified patrolling across the town to prevent further clashes. About 15 people were detained in connection with the clash.

Nirmal district Superintendent of Police C. Shashidhar Raju, who rushed to the town, said the situation was now under control. “We have deployed more forces and closely monitoring the situation,” he said.

Karimnagar range in-charge DIG P. Pramod Kumar also visited the town on Monday and reviewed the situation.

This is the second communal clash in the town this year. Large scale violence had rocked the town in January, leaving scores of people injured. Several houses, shops, and vehicles were damaged in the clashes.

Bhaina, a major trading center, has witnessed a series of communal riots in recent years.

In 2008, nine people were killed in the riots that broke out during a religious procession. Six of the victims belonged to one family who were burnt alive in the Vatoli village near the town.

Air India flight with 118 evacuees from San Francisco lands in Hyderabad

0

Air India evacuation flight from San Francisco with 118 passengers on board landed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here on Monday.

Vande Bharat evacuation flight AI 1617 from US (San Francisco) to Mumbai and Hyderabad landed at 9.22 a.m., an airport spokesman said.

This is a part of Vande Bharat Mission, the biggest-ever evacuation of Indian citizens stranded in various countries due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

After the completion of immigration and other formalities, the passengers will be transported to designated locations in the city for a mandatory 14-day quarantine period as per the rules framed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Telangana government in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, various central agencies, and the airport authorities made special arrangements to handle the arrivals as per the Standard operating Protocol issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

This is the second flight to land in Hyderabad. The first with 163 evacuees from Kuwait had reached on Saturday.

The third evacuation flight, from Abu Dhabi, is scheduled to reach Hyderabad at around 9.30 p.m. on Monday.

A total of seven evacuation flights are scheduled to land at Hyderabad Airport. Telangana government official said 2,350 stranded Indians from six countries will be reaching Hyderabad.

Under ‘Vande Bharat Mission’ which began on May 7, the government of India is operating 64 flights till May 13 to bring home nearly 14,800 nationals stranded abroad.

COVID-19: Study estimates Rs 80,000 cr loss to the Kerala economy

0

A study by the Kerala State Planning Board estimates a loss of Rs 80,000 crore to the state economy due to the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus scare.

The study — titled “Quick Assessment of the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Lockdown on Kerala’s Economy” — was undertaken after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked the Board to make a quick assessment of the state’s losses, particularly to the sectors most vulnerable to the impact of Covid-19 crisis.

The study pertains to the period between March 25 and May 3, 2020.

“For March 2020, assuming about 10 days of total production loss and decreased economic activity from the middle of March, we estimate the shortfall in value addition in the state to be roughly Rs 29,000 crore.

“For the first quarter of 2020-21, the entire month of April is affected, with near-total disruption in economic activity. It is expected that many of these would continue in May and subsequent months. This will mean a loss of roughly Rs 80,000 crore in the first quarter (of the fiscal), assuming the normal production level in 2020-21 to be about 5 percent higher than in 2019-20,” says the study.

Daily wage losses by self-employed and casual workers in Kerala for the lockdown study period is in the range of Rs 14,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore.

When it came to the shortfalls in Gross Value Added in the manufacturing sector from trade, hotels, and restaurants it has been estimated to be around Rs 17,000 crore.

The total losses in the agriculture sector, including plantation crops, are estimated at Rs 1,570.75 crore.

The losses for agricultural laborers due to loss of wages is estimated at about Rs 200.30 crore.

The report points out that the state should learn from the pandemic and work towards reducing its dependence on other states for food and food crops. With regard to rice cultivation, fallow wetlands must be identified across the State and cultivation entrusted to joint liability groups.

“An area of 25,000 hectares should be newly brought under paddy cultivation in the next two years. Vegetable production has increased commendably over the last few years and production doubled. However, we can undertake one more doubling exercise in vegetable production in the state in the next three to four years. Special measures have to be undertaken to ensure this. All available spaces in rural and urban areas should be utilized for this initiative,” says the report.

It also suggests that animal husbandry should be strengthened to attain a greater degree of self-sufficiency in commodities like eggs and meat.

“Kerala has to aim to reduce dependency on other states for egg supplies to just about 25 lakh eggs per day. We need to produce at least an additional 75 lakh eggs per day in the state. The “Kerala Chicken” scheme needs to be expanded over the next five years. A scheme to encourage rearing of male calves should also be thought of in this regard.”

Likewise, the total losses in the fisheries sector are estimated at Rs 1,371 crore. the study points out that the central government needs to consider a comprehensive economic package for the fisheries sector.

The study finds that the money-spinning Kerala tourism, which yields an annual income of Rs 45,000 crore, will lose about Rs 20,000 crore in 2020-21.

In the IT sector, the total decline in earnings is estimated to be Rs 4,500 crore in the first three quarters of 2020-21.

It also expects a job loss of around 26,236, while 80,000 indirect job losses in services, transportation, hotels, cleaning, and security sectors are also foreseen.

The total loss in terms of remittances to the state in January-February 2020 is estimated to be Rs 2,399.97 crore.

It points out that the economic crisis associated with the coronavirus scare is unprecedented. The production of goods and services came to an abrupt and almost total halt.

Further, the halt to production during the corona crisis is not locality- or scale-specific. Its effects are from top to bottom and across all locations.

“There is uncertainty over the period it will take to resume production after the crisis is over. There is also uncertainty about how long it will take to achieve previous levels of production. This is because the resumption of production involves national and international supply and distribution chains,” the study says.

After watching Mahanati, many audiences would have felt what sort of film director Nag Ashwin will pick up after this. But then, the director has stunned everyone by coming up with a film that has Prabhas as the hero. Not only that, it is being made at more than 200 crores budget. Here is what producer Ashwini Dutt has to say about this.

“When I’m expecting a fantasy story from Nag Ashwin after Mahanati, he surprised everyone by narrating a film that has world class appeal. And if we have to make this project with 100s of crores budget, who could be the hero other than Prabhas?” asks Ashwini Dutt, as he says that he is the one who should have launched Baahubali hero. “I should launch Prabhas for the kind of rapport we have with Krishnam Raju garu and Prabhas’ father Suryanarayana Raju. But even before we made a film with him, he became superstar” he adds.

Dutt confirmed that the initial plan of this film is to go to sets by October 2020 and release the movie by Summer 2022. He exuded confidence that this film will become another benchmark and wonder coming from Vyjayanthi Movies banner. But due to lockdown, the film’s shoot might not start as planned as #Prabhas20 is yet to complete.

Sixteen migrant labourers were crushed to death early on Friday by a goods train in Maharashtra after they fell asleep on the tracks. The accident happened between Jalna and Aurangabad in the Nanded Division of South Central Railway in Karmad police station area of the Aurangabad district.

The migrant labourers, who had been walking for several kilometres, were sleeping on the rail tracks when the mishap occurred, the railway officials said.According to railway officials, the workers were walking towards their home state Madhya Pradesh after they lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Most public transportation has already been cancelled due to the lockdown.

Tamanna has celebrated her 15 years in Film Industry

0

Milky siren Tamanna has recently celebrated her 15 years in Film Industry and still a sought after siren for many filmmakers. Both her acting talents and ever-lasting glamour quotient made her unique star heroine we must say. But here comes an interesting snippet about her upcoming debut.

When one gets to reign the top place in Telugu and Tamil filmdoms, often they got chance in other languages too. Tamanna already made an unsuccessful splash in Hindi, but haven’t made her debut as a heroine in Kannada movies. While she appeared as an item bomb in Jaguar and KGF Part 1, the actress never got the mega offer to become a heroine.

However, some rumours have emerged that in an upcoming film of star hero Yash, who is actually waiting to wrap KGF 2, Tamanna is picked as a leading lady. Director Narthan who carved a couple of hits in Sandalwood is said to be helming this film. When contacted, the director revealed that he hasn’t finished the script yet and haven’t even approached Tamanna for any role.

KTR Reaction on chemical gas leak in Vizag

0

The chemical gas leak in Vizag city has shook the entire nation. From PM Modi to AP Governor, all have expressed deep concern about this incident while the AP government is doing everything that is in his hands.

Condolences are pouring down from all corners to the deceased while the rescue operations for the affected people are going on. Telangana IT minister KTR too reacted on this incident and added that he was disturbed by the visuals of the tragic incident.

“Shocked & deeply anguished by the visuals from #VizagGasLeak. My wholehearted condolences to those who lost their near & dear. Let’s pray for the well-being of the hospitalized,” tweeted KTR.

Lastly he said ‘What a horrible year this has been’ which he meant about the Corona virus that has created a devastation across the globe.

CM Jagan announced Rs 1 crore to the bereaved families

0

As Vizag gas leak tragedy turned out to be fatal for 11 people and over 1000 fell sick, AP CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy has rushed to Vizag. He has met the victims and their families at the King George Hospital in the city where the victims are being treated. Later, he conducted a meeting with the officials and reviewed the situation. After review meeting with officials, CM Jagan has addressed the media.

CM Jagan announced Rs 1 crore compensation to the bereaved families in this gas leak tragedy. He also appointed a high-level committee to look into the issue and submit its findings. He said the decision would be taken after the committee’s report.

He also announced Rs 1 lakh compensation to the people who have fallen sick due to this chemical leak.

Good News to Telangana Farmers

0

In this Corona virus lockdown along with migrant labourers, farmers are also severely hit. In Telangana, despite the crop coming to their hands, they could not sell for a best price and at many places, unseasonal rains have destroyed the crop leaving famers in deep anguish.

In such tiring times, Telangana government has relieved farmers by waiving off the crop loan. CM KCR has released a sum of Rs 12,000 crore which waives off all the loans below Rs 25,000. About 5.5 farmers are likely to get benefitted from this.

Apart from this, the TRS government has released approximately Rs 7,000 crore towards farm input assistance i.e, Rythu Bandhu which would help over 57 lakh farmers.

Just when the oppositions are trying to corner the TRS government on not doing adequate measures to support the farmers in this crisis times, KCR has waived off the crop loan. This move by KCR is a checkmate that would certainly keep the oppositions silent for a while.

Megastar Chiranjeevi is not in a mood to relax

0

Megastar Chiranjeevi is not in a mood to relax. During the lockdown times, he is listening to scripts and finalising directors for his upcoming films back to back. The matinee idol confirmed that he has Lucifer remake with Sujith, Meher Ramesh’s film and KS Bobby’s movie in the pipeline.

Reports are coming out that Bobby narrated a story that will have two heroes in the leads. While Chiranjeevi will be main lead another young hero will be playing the second lead in the movie. With Ram Charan doing that cameo in Acharya, which other hero will be doing this role now? Though many thought that a mega hero will drop in, here comes the piece of the snippet.

They say that Rana Daggubati is desiring to act alongside Chiranjeevi from a long time, and being a best friend of Ram Charan, he’s the first go-to man for mega khandaan too. While Chiru already heard the script, Rana hasn’t got the narration, but with the offer coming from Megastar surely he might not say no.

Recently KS Bobby ‘Venky Mama’ to Daggubati family and they have no worries on the director’s capabilities to give another hit for their hero.

Rashmika thought of hiking her remuneration

0

One of the rising stars in Tollywood is none other than Rashmika Mandanna. At a time when the likes of Pooja Hegde and Kiara Advani looked like taking the top seat, this Bangalore diva dived into the scene to give them tough competition. While Sarileru Neekevvaru is her first big break into an elite club, Pushpa is following it now.

Cut to an interesting buzz, actually, Rashmika thought of hiking her remuneration to almost 1.5- 2 crores slot after Pushpa. For all the offers that are coming her way, including that of some big heroes projects, the actress wants to quote that high, which is justified to her demand. And for Pushpa, she’s said to be taking home only Rs 75 lakhs as that film was signed in last November much before Sarileru Neekevvaru also released.

Though Rashmika quoted a similar price for some inquiries, it is heard that she has now settled down to 1 crore remuneration only. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic hitting hard, there is widespread demand to cut down remunerations and focus on making good movies. The likes of Suresh Babu and Rajamouli are pretty vocal about cutting remunerations, and it looks like it had its impact on Rashmika too. While the likes of Pooja Hegde charged nearly 2 crores for recent films like Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, it looks like Rashmika has to wait for a couple of years to get into that club.

Rakul Preet Singh getting viral in social media

0

Not just men, even women are standing in long queues to buy alcohol at wine shops. We have seen pictures and video of women standing in front the liquor shops and a video of celebrity with a mask carrying a small bottle with her has surfaced on the internet. People who have watched the video were shocked seeing a celebrity with a bottle.

A few YouTube channels identified the celebrity as Rakul Preet Singh and claimed that she bought wine from a liquor shop in Mumbai. But the truth is, Rakul was not spotted at a wine store and it was near a medical shop. Also the bottle Rakul was carrying is not wine one and it is some sort of syrup bottle.

This led to a misinterpretation that like drunkards even Rakul Preet too waited for the opening of wine shops. We know Rakul as a fitness freak and even in this lockdown, she is continuously working out and posting videos and pictures of her daily routine on her social media and is motivating her fans and followers.
