After initial manufacturing data came in below expectations, the euro and pound dropped during yesterday’s trading session, Somaiya continued.

The dollar index, which measures the strength of the US dollar relative to a basket of six other currencies, was down 0.09 percent at 106.18 in the meantime.

New Covid variant evolution can be predicted by a novel model

0

Researchers claim to have created a model that forecasts the likely evolution of COVID-19-causing S-CoV-2 virus variations.

The model’s predictions of viral evolution, according to researchers from the University of Cologne in Germany and the Icahn School of Medicine in the US, can be used to help create vaccines that are as effective as possible against potential future variations.

Predictive modeling is a mathematical technique that examines patterns in a given set of input data to forecast future occurrences or results.

Which of the Covid variants can evade human immunity, proliferate throughout the population, and ultimately emerge as new major variants is predicted by the model.

It also predicts probable escape evolution pathways before new Covid variants appear, according to a study that was published in the journal Cell. In subsequent epidemic waves during the S-CoV-2 pandemic, a new variant superseded the old one.

But now, a number of Covid variations are in competition with one another and are circulating concurrently throughout the world.

Predictive models are then crucial in identifying the variants that are most likely to become dominant in the near future, according to the researchers.

On the one hand, internal alterations in new variants may improve transmissibility. However, they noted that immunity to earlier versions has been developed through prior infections or immunizations.

These variables are used by the new model to compute fitness differences between variants. The study demonstrates that the primary driver of S-CoV-2’s evolution is now human immunity.

“This implies that the virus will continue to generate new variants even after the pandemic is over, and we need timely data on them,” Cologne Institute for Biological Physics Professor Michael Lassig said.

Lassig, the study’s lead author, stated, “Our results show how important continued, internationally coordinated surveillance of the S-CoV-2 virus is.”

The World Health Organization receives recommendations on influenza vaccine selection from Lassig’s lab, which has been working on predictive analysis of the flu virus for years.

S&P: India’s economy is to rank 3rd by 2030

0

September saw stagnation in global economic growth for the second month in a row, but India remained a shining example of economic resilience, growing at one of the fastest rates in almost 13 years. This occurs at the same time that developed market private sector output—including manufacturing and services—saw a slight decline, according to a report published by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

S&P Global Market Intelligence’s Asia Credit Outlook 2023 projects that by 2030, India’s economy will rank third in terms of size. In the medium to long term, the expanding Indian economy will present numerous opportunities.

If the predicted course is followed, India’s economy will surpass that of Germany and Japan to become the third largest in the world by 2030. India’s GDP is predicted by S&P Outlook to reach USD 7.3 trillion by 2030.

With a GDP of USD 3.7 trillion in 2023–24, India has the fifth-largest economy in the world right now. In 2022, it surpassed the UK to become the fifth-largest economy. According to a report by S&P Global Market Intelligence, India’s economy exhibited remarkable strength, maintaining its position as the top emerging economy with remarkable growth momentum.

Out of all these economies, India’s growth picked up speed starting in August, and its output grew at one of the fastest rates in less than 13 years. The report claims that throughout the year 2023, the Indian economy grew steadily. A significant rise in new business, fueled by favorable market dynamics and favorable demand conditions, contributed to India’s strong expansion.

The remarkable growth trajectory of India can be attributed to both its manufacturing and services sectors. China and Russia, on the other hand, saw slower growth starting in August and saw more moderate expansions. Due to softer service sector cost inflation, price pressures for emerging market companies somewhat decreased, but businesses were still able to pass on higher costs more quickly thanks to strong demand growth.

As a result, rising market selling price inflation hit its highest point in 14 months, raising hopes for company profits.

While selling price inflation decreased in September, developed market profit margins were under pressure from input cost increases that were occurring at a faster pace.

Nevertheless, despite the challenge of higher prices on clients’ demand in an environment of high interest rates and softening global economic conditions, developed market selling prices continued to rise at a rate well above the long-run average.

India’s continued growth underscores the opportunities and challenges brought about by the constantly changing global economic landscape, as the gap between emerging and developed markets widens.

Karnataka to reschedule public service commission exams

0

Concerned about the Public Service Commission and the Home Department scheduling competitive exams at the same time, Priyank Kharge, the district head of Kalaburagi, and the Minister of IT-BT, Rural Development, and Panchayat Raj have urged the Chief Minister to think about rescheduling these exams on different dates.

Exams have been announced by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) to fill 47 roles as cooperative society inspectors and 242 accounts assistants for the State Audit and Accounts Department. The Home Department has scheduled an examination to fill 454 civil constable positions for the same day.

“Our state’s youth dedicate time and energy to studying for these exams in order to pursue careers in government. Confusion is inevitable when competitive exams are held on the same day for three different positions. In the letter to the Chief Minister, Kharge wrote, “I have been approached by several candidates who fervently request a reconsideration of the examination dates.”

“Over the last five years, governmental recruitments have seen a significant slowdown, leaving thousands of eager candidates struggling with the disheartening reality of unfulfilled professional aspirations due to a mismatch between qualifications and available opportunities,” he stated.

Minister Kharge has requested that the Chief Minister reschedule the examination for a new date in light of this.

Snapchat hits 406m daily users, reports $368m net loss

0

The parent company of Snapchat, Snap, reported a net loss of $368 million for the quarter that ended on September 30. While this represents a slight improvement over the same period last year, the business is still expanding slowly.

The company announced late on Tuesday that Jerry Hunter, who was appointed chief operating officer just over a year ago, is retiring and will not be replaced.

Compared to the same period last year, Snap’s total revenue increased by 5% to almost $1.2 billion.

Snapchat has 406 million daily active users, a 12% year-over-year increase.

Executive Chairman of Snap, Evan Spiegel, stated, “We have evolved our go-to-market efforts to better serve our partners and drive customer success. We are focused on improving our advertising platform to drive higher return on investment for our advertising partners.”

When COO Hunter joined Snap seven years ago, he played a significant part in the development of the engineering and organizational structures of the company.

He will stay on board with Snap until July 1, 2024, in order to facilitate the transition.

Spiegel expressed her sincere gratitude to Jerry for his significant contributions during his lengthy tenure at Snap. “His efforts to strengthen our team, give back to the community, and enhance our advertising platform have helped lay the groundwork for our future growth.”

Over 200 million users have sent over 20 billion messages through Snap’s AI-powered chatbot, “My AI,” since its launch.

As compared to Q3 2022, there have been almost three times as many public Stories posted in the US on Snapchat by creators. The company stated, “We are committed to growing and diversifying our revenue growth.

In the December quarter, Snapchat expects to have between 410 and 412 million daily active users.

Microsoft CEO admits Giving Up on Windows phone

0

CEO and chairman of Microsoft Satya Nadella has stated that the company made a mistake by leaving the smartphone business, one that could have been handled more skillfully.

Microsoft initially announced in 2017 that it would no longer be developing new hardware or features for Windows 10 mobile devices, following years of difficulties selling Windows smartphones to consumers who preferred Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems (OS).

Users of Windows 10 Mobile stopped getting bug patches, security updates, and help options on December 10, 2019.

Nadella acknowledged that giving up on Windows Phone and mobile was a mistake in his most recent interview with Business Insider, which was published this week.

He was cited in the report as saying, “The decision I think a lot of people talk about — and one of the most difficult decisions I made when I became CEO — was our exit of what I’ll call the mobile phone as defined then.”

Nadella continued, “Looking back, I believe there were ways we could have made it work, maybe by redefining the category of computing between PCs, tablets, and phones.”

In 2014, Nadella succeeded former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Microsoft slashed 7,800 jobs in 2015, mostly in the phone division, and wrote off $7.6 billion associated with its purchase of the Nokia phone division.

In an email to staff members, Nadella stated, “We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem including our first-party device family.”

In 2017, Microsoft ultimately acknowledged the demise of Windows Phone.

Bill Gates, the former CEO and co-founder of the business, previously declared that Microsoft’s defeat by Android was his “greatest mistake ever.”

WHO’s effort to regulate AI in healthcare

0

A report released on Wednesday highlights the possible difficulties that come with implementing artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the healthcare industry, as highlighted by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recent considerations for the regulation of AI in the field.

The WHO’s regulatory considerations address the significance of proving AI tools’ efficacy and safety, ensuring that systems are accessible to those who require them, and encouraging communication between AI tool developers and users.

The WHO acknowledges the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, noting that it could enhance current systems or devices by bolstering clinical trials, enhancing diagnosis and treatment, and enhancing the expertise of medical professionals.

According to a report by the data and analytics company GlobalData, AI technologies are and have been implemented quite quickly, sometimes without a complete understanding of how they will function in the long run. This could have negative effects on patients or healthcare providers.

“AI has so many advantages, and it has already enhanced a number of systems and devices. But these tools also carry some risks, given how quickly they are being adopted, according to Alexandra Murdoch, Senior Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement.

Since AI systems used in healthcare and medicine frequently access personal and medical data, legal frameworks protecting security and privacy should be in place. Other possible issues with AI in healthcare include risks related to cybersecurity, unethical data collection, and the amplification of biases and false information.

A recent Stanford University study provides an example of biases in AI tools. According to the study’s findings, certain AI chatbots propagated inaccurate medical information about people of color through their responses.

Tiger Nageswara Rao picks up steam at the box office

Mass Maharaja Ravi Tej’s PAN Indian film Tiger Nageswara Rao opened to mixed reviews from critics. The film, directed by Vamsee, has Nupur Sanon and Gayatri Bharadwaj as the female leads. The period action drama is based on a few real-life incidents that happened in Andhra Pradesh.

At the box office, the movie has now accelerated and is seeing strong occupancy. Without a doubt, Ravi Teja draws large crowds, but Tiger Nageswara Rao might have done much better if there hadn’t been a fight. The film’s potential at the box office was somewhat impacted by the three-way fight. One of the main complaints was the long runtime, which was reduced by the team while keeping the audience in mind.
