Failure to take appropriate precautions can result in eye strain and have adverse effects on eye health.

The study, led by Kevin Frick from Johns Hopkins University in the US, utilized GNI per capita data from the World Bank to estimate productivity losses among people aged 50-65 with moderate to severe vision impairment and blindness due to uncorrected refractive error or unoperated cataracts.

Currently, India has 70 million people with visual impairment, ranking third in potential savings among the countries studied. Globally, sight loss costs the economy $411 billion annually, as reported by the Lancet Global Health Commission on Global Eye Health.

Approximately 30% of individuals with sight loss experience reduced employment opportunities, with women, rural communities, and ethnic minority groups among the most affected. Nevertheless, early detection and treatment can prevent 90% of sight loss, safeguarding livelihoods and fostering business growth.

The annual Navaratri Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara, scheduled from October 15 to 23, is poised to offer a seamless darshan experience to devotees.

In anticipation of the expected influx of pilgrims, the TTD has suspended all privileged darshan programs at the hill temple of Tirumala for the nine-day festival.

TTD Executive Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy, addressing the media in Tirumala alongside District Collector K. Venkataramana Reddy and SP Parameswara Reddy on Tuesday, emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing a smooth Srivari Darshan for all pilgrims.

The Navaratri Brahmotsavams will feature significant events, including Garuda Vahana Seva on October 19, Pushpaka Vimanam on October 20, Golden Chariot on October 22, and Chakra Snana Mahotsavam on October 23. Daytime Vahana Sevas will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with nighttime Vahana Sevas from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Notably, Dhwajarohanam and Dhwajavarohanam events will not be conducted during the second Brahmotsavam.

Dharma Reddy clarified that the suspension of privileged darshans also extends to VIP breaks, infant darshans, darshans for NRIs, defense personnel, senior citizens, and the physically handicapped. Arjita Sevas, such as Astadala Padmaradhana, Unjal Seva, Tiruppavada, Kalyanotsavam, and Sahasra Deepalankara Sevas, will also be canceled.

To ensure the safety of devotees, two-wheelers will not be allowed on the twin ghat roads leading up to the Garuda Seva Vahana on October 19.

In response to the large crowds that gathered the previous night to witness Garuda Vahana Seva from the galleries of four Mada Streets, there is a consideration to advance the Vahana Seva on October 19, following consultation with the chief priests of Tirumala temple.

District Collector Venkataramana and SP Parameswara Reddy affirmed their departments’ readiness to provide manpower and support for the successful conduct of the Brahmotsavams. Model Code of Conduct Affects Dalit Bandhu:

The enforcement of the model code of conduct for the upcoming state Assembly elections has impacted the implementation of two significant state government schemes: Bandhu and the distribution of Bathukamma saris. Several district collectors have reported that they have halted the progress of these schemes.

The distribution of Bathukamma saris, scheduled for the upcoming Bathukamma festival starting on October 14, has been affected. The government had allocated 1.02 crore saris for distribution, with around 50% of them dispatched to distribution centers before the suspension.

Similarly, the second phase of the Dalit Bandhu scheme has also been put on hold, and officials are not accepting new beneficiaries. This decision followed complaints by members of Congress, including Uttam Kumar Reddy, to the Election Commission of India (ECI), requesting the suspension of these schemes due to the model code of conduct in effect.

In response to these complaints, the ECI instructed all district collectors to investigate the distribution of Bathukamma saris and the Dalit Bandhu scheme and provide a report. Many district collectors reported to the ECI that they had suspended the government schemes.

A district collector mentioned that they had ceased Dalit Bandhu proceedings and instructed officials not to issue any orders or upload applications on that day.

Additionally, more than 150 Israeli civilians and soldiers have been taken captive.

Assam Cabinet Approves Rs 3,000 Crore Economic Corridor:

The Assam cabinet has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a 1,000-kilometer-long economic corridor, with an investment of Rs 3,000 crore. State Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced that the cabinet has granted its approval for this project under the Asom Mala Scheme.

In addition to this, the Assam Cabinet has also given the green light to projects totaling Rs 950 crore aimed at enhancing rural infrastructure. These funds will be secured from NABARD in the form of a loan and will be utilized to upgrade 90 rural roads and four rural bridges managed by the Public Works Department.

Furthermore, the state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has implemented cost-saving measures for cabinet meetings, capping the expenditure at Rs 5 lakh. It has also discouraged the initiation of any new repair work for circuit houses and inspection bungalows for such meetings, given that cabinet meetings are conducted in various district headquarters.

The cabinet meeting locations for the coming months have been decided, with meetings scheduled for November and December to be held in Tinsukia and North Lakhimpur districts, respectively, while the January meeting will take place in Nagaon.

Moreover, the cabinet has approved a revised draft notification to declare an eco-sensitive zone within a 1 km radius around the Bherjan-Borajan-Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary in Tinsukia, in accordance with a directive from the Supreme Court.

Additionally, the cabinet has sanctioned the allocation of a plot for the construction of a judicial guest house in Kaziranga, intended to accommodate state guests and visitors from the Gauhati High Court.
