Lava launched a new smartphone ‘Agni 2’
Domestic smartphone brand Lava on Tuesday launched a new smartphone ‘Agni 2’ 5G, with a curved AMOLED display, and cutting-edge technology.
The phone is priced at Rs 21,999 and will be available to buy on online stores from May 24, with a flat discount of Rs 2,000 on all major credit and debit cards making the effective starting price only Rs 19,999, according to the company.
“Our aim is to make Agni a product that shows the technological prowess of India on the global stage. Its truly world-class attributes will change what you think about Indian smartphones,” Sunil Raina, President and Business Head, of Lava International, said in a statement.
Moreover, the company said that the Agni 2 comes powered by MediaTek’s latest Dimensity 7050 processor, which will provide faster gaming and app experience.
“Lava Agni 2 5G is India’s first smartphone powered by MediaTek Dimensity 7050 integrated with MediaTek 5G UltraSave, powerful MiraVision 4K HDR video processing for streamers, super-fast responsiveness, high-resolution displays along with MediaTek HyperEngine gaming enhancements,” Anku Jain, Managing Director, MediaTek India, said in a statement. The Agni 2 features a 6.78-inch FHD+ screen with a 120 Hz Refresh Rate.
Furthermore, the smartphone comes equipped with a 50MP quad camera with a segment-first 1.0-micron (1 um) pixel sensor, which captures more light and richer details.
Agni 2 offers 256 GB storage along with 8GB RAM, which is extendable up to 16GB RAM virtually. It is also powered by a 4700mAh battery with a 66W charger, which will charge 50 percent battery in less than 16 minutes, the company said.

Morgan Stanley has reported that the Indian economy is experiencing a broad-based recovery in demand, which is in contrast to the weakness observed outside Asia. The report attributes India’s growth to a combination of cyclical and structural factors and predicts that it will contribute 16% of the global GDP over 2023-24.
The report further states that recent indicators point towards a strong and broad-based recovery in India, with sustained growth rates of above 6%. The Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) and manufacturing PMI are both at a decade-high, while passenger vehicle sales, real goods and services tax collections, and services exports have all exceeded pre-Covid levels.
Morgan Stanley believes that India’s recovery is strong and broad-based, and is benefiting from a combination of cyclical and structural tailwinds. The country’s strong domestic demand and services export will compensate for the weakness seen in goods export.
Additionally, the balance sheets of Indian companies are healthy, which is supporting the domestic demand. Moreover, macro stability indicators like inflation and current account deficit are in the policymakers’ comfort zone, allowing economic expansion to continue without a monetary policy being brought into restrictive territory.
The bank predicts that India’s growth outlook is the strongest among large economies, and it will contribute 16% to global GDP growth over 2023-24.

Tamil Nadu spurious liquor tragedy
The death toll in the Tamil Nadu spurious liquor tragedy has increased to 19 after two more people died on Tuesday. Saravanan, aged 58, from Marakkanam in Villupuram district, and Rajavel, aged 49, who was admitted to the Government Medical College hospital in Villupuram, both passed away after consuming the hooch.
Relatives and friends of the victims blocked the Puducherry-Tindivanam road to demand a ban on the sale of spurious liquor in the state. Fourteen people have died in Villupuram district’s Marakkanam area, while five have died in Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday when 50 people consumed locally brewed liquor during a marriage function in Ekkiyarakuppam fishing hamlet in Marakkanam. Several of them suffered from nausea and vomiting and were rushed to hospitals, with three dying shortly after. Many more people succumbed to the toxic effects of the liquor on Sunday.
On Monday, six more individuals who had been admitted to various hospitals in Marakkanam, Villupuram district, died after consuming spurious liquor, bringing the death toll in that area to 14.
Two more individuals died on Tuesday. In Maruthanthakam, Chengalpattu, five people also died after consuming spurious liquor. Police are investigating whether there is a connection between the two incidents, as the two places are only 50 km apart.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the Marakkanam tragedy, while two have been arrested for supplying spurious liquor in Maruthanthakam. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those who were admitted to hospitals.

Sussex police will reportedly reopen the case of an eight-year-old boy of Indian origin who murder in London in 1981 after watching the royal wedding parade of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Vishal Mehrotra‘s remains were found in Rogate, West Sussex, seven months later, but no one has been convicted of his murder despite the police interviewing more than 14,000 individuals.
Following criticism from Vishal’s father about the police’s failure to reinvestigate the case, officers met with him and stated that detectives had been given a clear direction to advance the case. A BBC podcast revealed new information, including a possible link between Vishal’s murder and a document named “Vishal,” which was discovered in the possession of a convicted pedophile, and the police apologized for not recognizing this connection.
Nicholas Douglass, a convicted pedophile who wrote a document about a boy he was abusing in 1983, may have a potential link to the murder of Vishal Mehrotra. Vishal’s remains were found buried in a bog on a property where Douglass was known to have abused children.
The document titled “Vishal,” which was discovered in Douglass’s possession, had been held by Sussex police since the 1990s but was only connected to Vishal’s murder four years ago.
