Google may be working on new AI-powered search engine

0

Amidst rising competition from Microsoft and OpenAI, Google is reportedly developing an all-new AI-powered search engine, the media reported.

The company is currently in the early phases of developing a search service that aims to provide a highly personalized experience by anticipating the users’ needs, reports Engadget.

However, the project has “no clear timetable”.The New York Times first reported the news. Moreover, the report mentioned that Google is also developing a suite of new AI features for its existing search engine under the codename “Magi”.

Among the features the tech giant is working on is a chatbot that can answer software engineering inquiries and create code snippets.

The company has also tested a function that would allow users to search for music via a chatbot conversation.

“We’ve been bringing AI to Google Search for years to not only dramatically improve the quality of our results, but also introduce entirely new ways to search, such as Lens and multi-search,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“We’ve done so in a responsible and helpful way that maintains the high bar we set for delivering quality information. Not every brainstorm deck or product idea leads to a launch, but as we’ve said before, we’re excited about bringing new AI-powered features to Search and will share more details soon,” it added.

Other new features “in various stages of development” include a Chrome feature called “Search along”, which will enable a chatbot to scan the webpage you’re reading and provide contextual information, according to the report.

Further, the report said that Google plans to announce “Magi” next month before introducing additional new features sometime in the fall.

Another image showed him talking to Irina alongside fashion model Stella Maxwell at the Levi’s and Tequila Don Julio’s Neon Carnival at the Desert International Horse Park in Thermal, California.

Single Leo reportedly recently denied having a relationship with ‘Love Island UK’ presenter Maya Jama.

As per Mirror.co.uk, model Irina, 37, was said to have split up with movie star Bradley last year and the pair share a five-year-old daughter Lea.

Other celebs pictured at Coachella include Lil Nas X, Janelle Monae, Camila Cabello, Metro Boomin, Lil Baby, and Yo Gotti.

Earlier this month, Leo was said to have hit back at the romance rumors after a source claimed the pair had allegedly been enjoying time together on a number of dates across the globe.

Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa inaugurates Jindal Global Centre for G20 Studies at JGU

0

G20 Presidency of India aims for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth, Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa of India said at the Distinguished Public Lecture entitled: ‘India’s Presidency of G20: The Way Forward’ to Mark the Inauguration of the Jindal Global Centre for G20 Studies at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU).

Amitabh Kant dwelt on a wide-ranging overview outlining India’s political and development narratives, key priorities, initiatives to reshape and reconfigure the world and how India is planning to execute the meetings for G20 ahead of the Leaders’ Summit in September 2023.

“G20 is important because it comprises about 85 percent of the global GDP and about 78 percent of the global trade, 90 percent of the patents in the world, and nearly two-thirds of the global population. The G20 Presidency moves from one country to another every year and different countries have different perspectives and priorities. It is very important to study, examine and analyze this as G20 is essentially an economic group for development and growth. Therefore, the Jindal Global Centre for G20 Studies at O.P. Jindal Global University is key to understanding how each country manages the issues and challenges facing the G20 Community. The Centre will bring in academic rigour and insight and the G20 Secretariat will be delighted to reflect on the outcome of these deliberations.” He congratulated JGU on emerging as India’s top-most private university and its position in international rankings.

“This is a period of great upheaval and turbulence across the world. The post-Covid era has seen nearly 200 million people fall below the poverty line. Nearly two decades of work done to alleviate poverty has been eliminated while a third of the world is facing recession. There’s a challenge with almost 75 countries in the world facing a global debt crisis. And on top of all this, there’s a huge challenge of climate action and climate finance. There is a geopolitical crisis in Europe right now with a war going on for over a year and in addition to all this, you’ve seen the financial crisis or the Silicon Valley Bank collapse in the US and the cascading impact that you can have in other parts of the world.”

Providing a vision and way forward, Kant outlined the strategies for change as India takes over the leadership of the G20. “The first and foremost is the political narrative which India puts forward, the second is the priorities to shape the world and thirdly how well do we execute this presidency on the ground. It’s important to understand this because in the last few years, India has done a huge amount of digital transformation. India today does about 11 times more payments than the US and Europe do together. During Covid, we provided 2 billion vaccinations to our citizens, which was all done digitally. A study by the Bank of International Settlements said that (the digital milestones) India has achieved in the last eight years, what would normally have taken 50 years.”

“Regarding our priorities for the G20, the world is facing huge recessionary trends across the world. It’s important that we talk about inclusive, sustainable growth because without growth we will not be able to lift people above the poverty line and growth alone will have a huge impact on the lives of citizens in the global south. India aims to work with the rest of the world to drive inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth,” Kant outlined. “Thirdly, we face the challenge of climate action and climate finance. As India becomes more industrialized, we will become the third biggest polluters in the world. And therefore India must become the first country in the world to industrialize without carbonizing the world.”

“Digital transformation will drive the growth of India for the next three decades. India’s model is unique and if you look around the world there are four billion people who do not have a digital identity. There are two billion people who do not even have a bank account. There are 133 countries in the world that do not have a fast payment mechanism. India’s experience can be taken to other parts of the global south and really help to transform the lives of citizens. And lastly, our next priority is women-led development. This whole cycle of women driving growth and progress and development is very, very critical”, Amitabh Kant concluded.

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor O.P. Jindal Global University said, “It is my honor to welcome Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa for India to this very important inauguration.

The Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies is a part of this university, as a multidisciplinary center that will encompass all the 12 schools of the university. Kant belongs to that outstanding group of Indian civil servants who have made transformative contributions to the development of India. In his earlier avatars, he has undertaken initiatives that have resulted in significantly impactful public policy reforms, as well as transformative change in society.

The Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies will be a permanent Center located at O.P. Jindal Global University to be able to engage in research knowledge creation and thought leadership, including hosting seminars, conferences, lectures, and workshops on a variety of issues concerning G20. We have identified five important agenda points: a global conference of universities from each G20 country which we concluded recently with nearly 100 universities from G20 countries; to organize a G20 Ambassadors conclave that will promote a dialogue on the future of diplomacy; to host the Global Justice Colloquium with a focus on bringing lawyers and judges from the G20 countries to discuss and debate on the state of justice systems and to host the World Sustainability Forum to engage on issues surrounding environment and climate change. And fifth to host the Global Policy and Development Dialogue for bringing together policymakers and academics to discuss issues confronting the world of policy development.”

Ravi Thapar, Professor and Executive Dean of the Jindal School of International Affairs outlined the milestones of the Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA) and added, “It is a very significant and momentous occasion for JSIA, to have such a distinguished lecture by an intellectual, now a diplomat from the G20, Amitabh Kant. Covid took a toll and made a dent of about $14 trillion in the global GDP. According to the World Inequality Lab, Paris, about 1 percent of the world’s richest population is walking away with 38 percent of the world’s wealth while the bottom 58 per cent of the global population is just about to get 2 per cent of the wealth. In a world of inequality, it becomes very important for the South to start asserting this voice and the G20 happens to be one of the most influential groups to do that.”

Professor (Dr.) Mohan Kumar, Dean, and Director of Jindal Global Centre for G20 Studies said, “It is really an honour and a pleasure to welcome Amitabh Kant who has made such a difference to policy making in India. As students, no matter what you do, no matter which profession you are, as individuals, you can make a difference in society. We have outlined five priorities of the Indian presidency which we will discuss: be it multilateralism, climate change, the voice of the Global South, inclusive economic growth, and more.”

The concluding address was delivered by Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Registrar of O.P. Jindal Global University.

Atletico win again, disaster for Valencia in La Liga

0

FC Barcelona saw their lead at the top of La Liga cut to 11 points when they were held 0-0 away to Getafe.

Barca was unable to break down a well-drilled rival and failed to score for their third consecutive match, following another flat performance, reports Xinhua.

Barca’s injury problems got worse in the 18th minute when Sergi Roberto had to limp off with a muscle injury and was replaced by Eric Garcia.

Their best chance came in the 26th minute when Raphinha hit the post when put clean through, and Alex Balde also sent the rebound against the woodwork, but overall, Barca disappointed once again and didn’t do enough against a rival that dug deep for a vital point.

Real Madrid rested several key players ahead of their Champions League quarterfinal return leg in London next week but won with relative ease away to Cadiz.

Although Cadiz goalkeeper David Gil made several good saves, Nacho Fernandez scored a powerful shot in the 72nd minute, and Marco Asensio made it 2-0 just three minutes later.

Two goals from Antoine Griezmann extended Atletico Madrid’s run to 10 wins from 12 games as they defeated Almeria 2-1.

Atletico dominated the game, with Griezmann opening the scoring in the fifth minute, and although Leo Baptistao leveled with Almeria’s only shot on target in the 39th minute, Griezmann popped up again four minutes later to win the match.

Inaki Williams scored twice as Athletic Bilbao won the Basque derby 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad. Williams’ first goal came following a 33rd-minute corner, while his second came with a powerful shot to finish off a perfect counterattack with 20 minutes left to play.

Betis are three points behind fourth-place Real Sociedad after a 3-1 win at home to Espanyol, who remain second from bottom.

Ayoze Perez’s first goal for Betis put them ahead in the 26th minute, and he then turned provider for Joan Miranda to score Betis’ second of the game, seven minutes later.

Cesar Montes got Espanyol back into the game two minutes into the second half, but William Carvalho made the game safe for Betis in the 68th minute with a powerful shot.

Girona beat bottom-of-the-table Elche 2-0 to almost assure their place in the top-flight next season with goals from Valentin Castellanos and Oriol Romeu.

Valencia’s problems increased, however, as they lost 2-0 at home to Sevilla, who continue to improve since the arrival of Jose Luis Mendilibar as a coach.

Second-half goals from Loric Bade and Suso condemned Valencia to defeat, and things got worse in the 86th minute when Ilaix Moriba was sent off, meaning he missed next weekend’s vital trip to Elche.

Valladolid pulled off a shock away win to Villarreal with goals from Selim Amallah and Jawad El Yamiq in the second and 34th minute of the game, and although Etienne Capoue pulled a goal back for the home side with 16 minutes left to play, Valladolid held on and could have added a third with better finishing.

On Friday night, Rayo Vallecano ended an eight-game run without a win when they defeated Osasuna 2-1 thanks to an own goal from Aridane Hernandez after 40 minutes and a second from Isi Palazon three minutes later.

Kim Jong-un celebrates completion of building more new homes in Pyongyang

0

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a ceremony to mark the completion of building another 10,000 units of homes in Pyongyang, state media said on Monday, describing the project to supply more homes as one of the top policy priorities.

Kim attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for completing the first stage of the housing project in the Hwasong district of the capital on Sunday night, according to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The ceremony came around a year after the North began the construction in February last year under a five-year project to build 50,000 new homes in Pyongyang by 2025, or 10,000 units each year, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Kim said building 50,000 flats in the capital is the “long-cherished plan” being pushed by the ruling party and the state as a “top priority” to provide citizens with more stable living conditions, the KCNA said.

The housing project is being driven by Kim to produce economic achievements and improve people’s lives amid economic hardships from sanctions and Covid-19 border restrictions.

With the latest completion, the North has supplied 20,000 new homes in Pyongyang. Last year, the country built 10,000 apartments and an 80-floor skyscraper in the Songsin and Songhwa areas.

The North is currently working on building another 10,000 units of flats in the Hwasong district in northeastern Pyongyang under the second stage of the housing project.

The KCNA on Monday described the latest Hwasong housing district as the “blocks of modern flats” sitting on areas of more than 150 hectares.

It houses various skyscrapers, high-rise apartment buildings, public facilities, and public service establishments to “suit the convenience of citizens”, it added.

Excited to build on Apple’s long-standing history in India: Tim Cook

0

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Monday said that the company is excited to build on its long-standing history in India, as it gears up to mark a major expansion with the opening of its first retail stores in the country.

Apple completes more than 25 years in India this week and the tech giant will open two own-branded retail stores — at Jio World Drive Mall in Mumbai and at Select CityWalk Mall in Saket, Delhi.

“India has such a beautiful culture and an incredible energy, and we’re excited to build on our long-standing history — supporting our customers, investing in local communities, and working together to build a better future with innovations that serve humanity,” said Cook who will inaugurate the retail stores in the country, a first for the tech giant which has doubled down on its India growth plans.

Apple’s first two retail stores in India will welcome customers from all over the country and around the world.

The new Apple flagship retail stores in Mumbai and Delhi, backed by aggressive sales initiatives, will fuel Apple’s growth in the year ahead, according to industry experts.

India’s vibrant community of app developers now supports more than 1 million jobs.

App Store payouts to developers in the country have more than tripled since 2018.

At the iOS App Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru, Apple works one-on-one with developers to help take their apps from good to great.

Since 2017, the accelerator has hosted sessions for more than 15,000 developers, enabling them to build on their ideas and bring cutting-edge apps to the market.

As part of Apple’s commitment to be 100 percent carbon neutral for its supply chain and products by 2030, all active Indian manufacturing supply chain partners are committed to using 100 percent clean energy for their Apple operations.

Apple began manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017, and since then, the company has worked with suppliers to assemble iPhone models and produce a growing number of components.

Apple recently launched educational programming in India focused on women’s health, as part of the company’s $50 million Supplier Employee Development Fund which was founded in 2022 to educate supplier employees on new skill development, rights awareness, and other learning opportunities.

Melbourne overtakes Sydney as Australia’s biggest city

0

Melbourne has overtaken Sydney as the biggest city in Australia, a title the latter had held on to for more than 100 years.

With populations rapidly growing on Melbourne’s fringe, the city limits have been expanded to include the area of Melton, the BBC reported on Monday.

The latest government figures, from June 2021, put Melbourne’s population at 4,875,400 — 18,700 more than Sydney.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) defines a city’s “significant urban area”, including connecting suburbs with more than 10,000 people.

“Until the 2021 census definition, the Sydney significant area had a higher population than Melbourne. However, with the amalgamation of Melton into Melbourne in the latest… classification, Melbourne has more people than Sydney — and has had since 2018, ” the ABS’s Andrew Howe told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on Monday, which described the redrawn boundary as “a technicality”.

Proud Sydneysiders will point to the ABS’s conclusion that when looking at the more excellent Sydney and Melbourne regions, Sydney remained bigger in June 2021.

More significant regions of a city take into account its “functional area”, the ABS says, and include populations who regularly socialize, shop, or work within the city, but may live in small towns and rural areas surrounding it.

However, the federal government predicts Greater Melbourne will overtake Greater Sydney in 2031-32. This is not the first time Melbourne has held the title of Australia’s biggest city.

As a result of the gold rush in the late 19th century, which saw migrants flock to the state of Victoria, Melbourne grew rapidly and outnumbered Sydney until 1905.
