IPL 2023: Conway, Dube fifties; Desphande’s three-fer help CSK prevail over RCB in run-feast
Breezy half-centuries by Devon Conway and Shivam Dube and a fine 3-45 by pacer Tushar Deshpande in a high-scoring match helped Chennai Super Kings prevail over Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in a run-feast at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Monday.
After CSK had lost the prolific Ruturaj Gaikwad early, Conway and Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 20) repaired the innings and then Dube joined the fun as Chennai sent the RCB bowlers on a leather hunt after being asked to bat first on a good pitch that was expected to ease further with the dew set in.
Conway blasted a 43-ball 83, hitting six boundaries and six maximums as he and Dube, who smacked 52 off 27, smashed two fours and six maximums as CSK set up a big score of 226/6 in 20 overs. Conway first put on 74 runs for the second wicket with Rahane then shared an 80-run partnership with Dube.
Deshpande then got into the act after Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis had struck brilliant half-centuries as RCB raced to 140/3 in 12 overs. He claimed two wickets in that crucial period sending back the dangerous Dinesh Karthik (28 off 14) and Wayne Parnell (2).
Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis’ efforts went in vain as RCB were restricted to 218/8 in 20 overs, falling short by eight runs.
With this win, CSK moved into the third spot with six points from five matches, tied with Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings with the same number of points. Rajasthan Royals lead the table with eight points from five matches.
But in the end, their efforts went in vain as Chennai Super Kings chipped in with timely wickets thanks to Deshpande and Matheesha Pathirana (2-42) and went on to win the match despite mixed efforts in the field as they dropped five catches, Theekshana putting down two, and Rahane pulling off a couple of good saves at the boundary and saving eight runs.
In all 444 runs were scored in the two innings with the batters smacking 33 sixes in all as the batters ruled over the bowlers.
Earlier, Conway started slowly but struck some brilliant shots in a superb display of power-hitting, blasting 83 off 45 deliveries while Dube smashed 52 off 27 balls, hammering five towering sixes, as CSK made superb use of a good pitch and feasted on the RCB bowling.
Despite losing the prolific Ruturaj Gaikwad (3 of 6) with only 16 runs on the board, Chennai Super Kings reached 53/1 in the Power-play, with the left-right combination of Conway and Ajinkya Rahane taking control. They went on to raise 74 runs for the second wicket partnership.
After his first few shots landed in no man’s land but failed to reach the boundary, Rahane hooked Vijaykumar Vyshak onto the roof of the Chinnaswamy Stadium and then lashed Wayne Parnell to extra-cover fence in the 6th over before ending the Power-play by pulling Parnell over short fine-leg for maximum followed by flicking the South African bowler to the midwicket boundary.
Just when it looked like Rahane will race to his second half-century of IPL 2023, he fell to a Hasaranga wrong’un, swinging in vain as the ball crashed into the off-stump. Rahane made 37 off 20 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes.
Conway, on the other hand, whipped Parnell to the midwicket fence and then scooped him over the fine-leg boundary for a six. The Black Caps opener rolled out the scoop for a boundary off Vyshak before launching Glenn Maxwell straight of wide long-on for a maximum. Harshal Patel was swatted away for six over the midwicket fence while Wanindu Hasaranga got the same treatment when he dropped one short outside off-stump as he completed back-to-back half-centuries.
Shivam Dube smacked Siraj for a four and a six in the 14th over and blasted Vyshak for two sixes in the next over and followed it up with a boundary off a wide yorker to claim 18 runs as CSK were cruising with 165/2 at the end of the 15th over. He ramped a short one from Harshal Patel to the third-man boundary.
However, Harshal Patel made the breakthrough for RCB when he castled Conway with a brilliant slow-dipping yorker, ending the Black Caps opener’s superb innings for 83 (off 45 balls, 6×4, 6×6). Dube completed his fifty off 25 balls with a couple of big hits against Parnell. The South African pacer had the last laugh as he cut on the pace again and had Dube (52 off 27 balls, 2×4, 5×6) caught inches away from the boundary rope at deep midwicket as Mohammed Siraj pouched a superb catch.
Moeen Ali remained not out on 19 from nine deliveries as Ambati Rayudu (14 off 6) and Ravindra Jadeja (10 off 8) helped CSK make good use of the opportunity and set RCB the biggest chase of IPL 2023, which in the end proved enough for an exciting win.

Pawan Kalyan demands YSRCP to apologise for anti-Telangana remarks
Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan on Monday demanded Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) tender an unconditional apology to the people of Telangana for certain comments made by its leaders.
The Jana Sena Party leader found fault with the remarks made by some leaders of YSRCP in reaction to a statement by a Telangana minister.
Pawan Kalyan said that he personally felt bad about the way in which YSRCP leaders and ministers blamed the people of Telangana, criticized Telangana region, and used words hurting Telangana’s self-respect. He advised YSRCP leaders to mind their language.
The JSP leader said he always maintained that rulers and people are different. “If the Telangana minister has made remarks which are insulting to Andhra Pradesh, criticize him but don’t drag people of Telangana into any controversy,” he told YSRCP leaders.
The actor-politician demanded that the senior leadership of YSRCP should respond to this. He reminded them that they have houses and businesses in Telangana.
Pawan Kalyan pointed out that Andhra Pradesh Education minister Botsa Satyanarayana, who made certain remarks in reaction to Telangana finance minister Harish Rao’s statement, had business in Telangana. The JSP leader said Botsa’s family had a cable business in Telangana.
He said if a minister says something wrong, his ministerial colleagues and the chief minister should condemn such remarks.
He said leaders from both states should avoid making any remarks against the people of the other state.

India’s wholesale inflation falls to 1.34%, deflation in manufactured products say experts
India’s wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation fell to a 29-month low of 1.34 percent in March owing to a steep fall in indexes of primary articles, manufactured products, fuel, and power as well as food.
Wholesale inflation was 3.85 percent in February 2023, while it was 4.73 percent in January 2023.
Even the February WPI inflation at 3.85 percent was a two-year low. In January 2021, wholesale inflation had fallen to 2.51 percent.
The wholesale inflation figures have come just days after retail inflation had stood at 5.66 percent for March 2023, which too was at a 15-month low.
“The fall in WPI inflation to a 29-month low of 1.3 percent in March has been supported by the high base of the previous year. It is important to note that the manufactured products category has witnessed a deflation for the first time in about three years supported by lower textile and metals prices,” Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CARE Ratings, told IANS.
However, there has been an uptick in food prices, somewhat offsetting the lower prices for fuel and power and manufactured products, she said.
According to Sinha, the downtrend is expected to continue, with the WPI inflation remaining below 1 percent for the next three months, given the favorable base.
“Some uptick can be seen Q2 onwards as the support from favorable base fades but the monthly WPI inflation is still expected to remain below 5 percent in absence of any major turnaround in global crude oil and commodity prices. For FY24, we expect WPI inflation to average around 2.6 percent, lower than the estimated average retail inflation at 5.1 percent,” Sinha concluded.
Reacting to the WPI numbers, Dheer Shah, CFO, of BDR Pharma said, after CPI inflation data released last week fell to a 15-month low, WPI inflation has slowed to a 29-month low.
“Most components of the WPI inflation rate have eased across manufactured, primary, and fuel and power groups. The fall in wholesale inflation is a positive development. On expected lines, the data has been softening for the past few months and falling in sync with retail inflation. As we advance, a good monsoon year will help with stable WPI inflation, whereas a spike in crude prices will pose a risk to wholesale and retail inflation,” Shah said.
Inflation must be stable and in a range for the central bank to put its interest rate policy on hold and start easing from CY24 onwards, Shah added.

‘Apple Glasses’ expected to launch in 2026 or 2027
Apple is reportedly planning to launch its augmented reality (AR) ‘Apple Glasses’ by 2026 or 2027 at the earliest, subject to the successful development of advanced metalens technology in the intervening years.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is developing metalens technology to replace plastic lens covers in a range of devices, starting with iPads and iPhones, reports MacRumors.
Metalenses are a flat lens technology that uses metasurfaces to focus light.
In optical applications, they can benefit from the flat surface and reduced thickness when compared to standard, curved refractive lenses.
Moreover, Kuo mentioned that metalens covers are set to enter mass production in 2024 for use in Apple’s Face ID system for iPad Pro, then iPhone in 2025 or 2026.
According to the analyst, if research proceeds as expected, they would eventually be utilized in Apple’s AR glasses, which will go into production in 2026 or 2027 at the earliest.
Furthermore, according to the report, Kuo has made an even bolder prediction that metalens covers may soon replace the ‘lowest-end’ plastic lenses currently used in cameras.
This could happen as early as 2028 to 2030, provided that there is continuous linear progress in manufacturing and software algorithm development.
Meanwhile, Apple will reportedly not include the iPhone SE 4 in its new product planning for 2024/2025.

Death toll rises to 97 as fighting rages in Sudan
Clashes in Sudan’s capital Khartoum raged for a third day, raising the death toll to 97, a doctors’ union said in a statement on Monday.
Hundreds of civilians were wounded in the violence, Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying.
The tense situation in Sudan has sparked broad concerns in the international community, with the UN, the African Union, the Arab League, and other international organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire.
Violent clashes erupted on April 15 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum and other cities, with the two sides accusing each other of initiating the conflict.
The tension between the two military forces has escalated since April 12 in the Merowe region in northern Sudan, after the RSF moved military vehicles to a location near the military air base there, a move that the army considered illegal.
Deep differences have emerged between the Sudanese army and the RSF, particularly regarding the latter’s integration into the army as stipulated in a framework agreement signed between military and civilian leaders on December 5, 2022.
The RSF was formed in 2013 and has its origins in the notorious Janjaweed militia that brutally fought off rebels in Darfur.
Since then, RSF leader Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has built a powerful force that has intervened in conflicts in Yemen and Libya and controls some of Sudan’s gold mines.
It has also been accused of human rights abuses, including the massacre of more than 120 protesters in June 2019.
This fighting is the latest episode in bouts of tension that followed the ousting of long-serving President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

Delhi MCD polls: AAP’s Shelly Oberoi, Aaley Iqbal renominated as mayoral candidates
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday named Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal as the mayoral and deputy mayoral candidates respectively for the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.
The decision to renominate the two incumbents was taken by Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, in recognition of their performance in the MCD, Delhi government, said AAP in a statement issued on Monday.
The MCD elections are scheduled to be held on April 26, and the party’s candidates had filed their nominations earlier in the day.
Addressing a press conference, senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Singh, said that the decision to nominate Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal for a second term in the MCD was taken due to their exceptional performance during their time in office.
Singh added that the party is confident that they will secure another resounding win in the elections this time around.
He also emphasized the unprecedented support received by AAP during the MCD election for its vision to make Delhi a clean and prosperous city.
MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi also expressed her gratitude to Chief Minister Kejriwal for nominating her once again as the Mayoral candidate.
She pledged to continue with the same level of commitment in the future.
Meanwhile, Singh also accused the BJP of trying to destroy the democracy of the country at every level. Despite this, he said, all the councilors of the AAP stood firmly and voted for their candidates, putting a stop to the BJP’s loot in the MCD for 15 consecutive years
