Monte Carlo Masters: Djokovic makes winning return to action, advances to round three
Novak Djokovic made a winning return to action as he fought his way into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Russian qualifier Ivan Gakhov.
It was Djokovic’s first tournament in over a month as he was forced to miss the Sunshine Swing — Indian Wells and Miami Open — both ATP 1000 masters events, after he was denied entry to the United States over his vaccination status.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, the World No. 1 faced a spirited challenge from World No. 198 Gakhov and was in danger of losing the opening set. But Djokovic navigated the big moments well to seal the win.
“It was probably if you can call it this way, an ugly tennis win for me today,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview. “I haven’t played my best, particularly in the first set. And I kind of expected that that was going to happen in a way with swirly conditions, a lot of wind today, changing directions.
“It’s different practicing and then playing an official match on clay, (where) I guess no two bounces are the same. It’s always quite unpredictable what’s going to happen. But all in all, I’m just pleased with the way I held my nerves in the important moments and I managed to clinch the two-set win.”
Gakhov was the fourth alternate into the qualifying field and took full advantage of the opportunity to reach the main draw and earn his first ATP Tour win to advance to the second round. But Djokovic was playing his 1,254th tour-level match compared to Gakhov’s third, and that experience paid dividends in the critical moments.
“I never saw Ivan play before today to be honest. I’ve seen a little bit of his video from yesterday’s match and that’s all. That was not the best preparation, but he’s a young player coming up from the Challenger Tour and he just was on a roll,” Djokovic said.
The Serb is pursuing a record-extending 39th ATP Masters 1000 title this week and his third trophy in Monte-Carlo. The top seed will play an Italian in the third round — Lorenzo Musetti or Luca Nardi.
Sikandar Kher joins Samantha, Varun Dhawan for ‘Citadel’ India
Actor Sikander Kher will be seen sharing screen space with Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan in the Hindi remake of the American TV series ‘Citadel’.
As confirmed the makers are slowly finalizing the other cast for the Hindi version and Sikandar Kher is the latest addition to the cast. The show is going to be directed by the hit filmmaker duo Raj and DK.
A source close to the production team says: “Sikandar Kher is the latest addition to the cast of the Hindi version of ‘Citadel’. He even attended the India premiere of the American version that happened in Mumbai.”
“‘Citadel’ is anticipated to be one of the biggest shows of the season. This will be the first time that Sikandar will be working with Raj and DK.”
The Hindi version will have Varun in the lead. The show will also see Samantha playing the part which is originally played by Priyanka Chopra.
Musk gives April 20 as fresh deadline to remove all legacy Blue badges
Elon Musk on Thursday gave another deadline of April 20 to remove all legacy Blue check marks, after faltering on the first deadline of April 1 due to a lack of the backend technology to achieve this.
According to reports, there were technical challenges to removing so-called blue ticks quickly at scale, and the only way to do it currently was a manual approach.
Musk said in a tweet that the “Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20”.
Details earlier emerged that the Musk-run company does not have the backend technology to remove around 4.2 lakh legacy accounts with Blue ticks all at once.
“Removal of verification badges is a largely manual process powered by a system prone to breaking, which draws on a large internal database — similar to an Excel spreadsheet — in which verification data is stored, according to the former employees,” according to The Washington Post.
“In the past, there was no way to reliably remove badges at a bulk scale — prompting workers tackling spam, for example, to have to remove check marks one-by-one. It was all held together with duct tape,” it added, quoting a former employee.
Musk had earlier given a deadline of April 1 to remove all legacy accounts with Blue verification. The company has so far only removed the Blue tick for The New York Times.
Twitter launched its verification system in 2009 to protect celebrities from impersonation but now, Musk wants everyone to pay $8 a month for the Blue badge.
The White House and The New York Times refused to pay for verified Blue with subscription service.
LeBron James, the highest-paid NBA player of all time and earning over $40 million per year, also refused to pay Twitter.

PM Modi to visit Assam on Friday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on Friday, where he will lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate projects worth around Rs 14,300 crore.
During his day-long visit, Modi will dedicate to the nation, AIIMS Guwahati, and three other medical colleges in the state.
He will also launch the ‘Aapke Dwar Ayushman’ campaign.
The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of Assam Advanced Health Care Innovation Institute and also the foundation stone of a bridge on the Brahmaputra river connecting Palashbari and Sualkuchi, official sources said.
Modi will also attend a mega Bohag Bihu event at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, where more than 10,000 dancers and drummers will participate to celebrate the festival which marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year.

Google rolls out app auto-archive tool to free 60% space on Android devices
Google has rolled out its much-awaited auto-archive feature on Android devices which will reduce storage taken by apps that are not frequently in use by nearly 60 percent.
The auto-archive tool will help users automatically free up to nearly 60 percent of an app’s storage space, without removing the app presence or users’ data from the device.
This will reduce unnecessary uninstalls and help users successfully install new apps, said Chang Liu and Lidia Gaymond, Product Managers, at Google Play.
Auto-archive allows users to free up space on their devices without the need to completely uninstall an app.
Once the user opts in, infrequently used apps will be partly removed from the device to save space, whilst the app icon and the user’s personal app data will be preserved.
When the user wants to start using the app again, they can simply tap to re-download it and pick up where they left off (as long as the app is still available on Google Play).
“Auto-archive is only available for developers using the App Bundle to publish their apps. If your app supports archiving, users will be less likely to see it surface amongst uninstall suggestions,” said the company.
This is how the new feature works.
The user tries to install a new app when the device is out of storage. A pop-up window appears asking if the user wants to enable auto-archive.
If the user opts in, unused apps on the user’s device will be auto-archived to free up enough space for a new app request.
“Auto-archive is an easy way for users to manage their device storage, and a great way for developers to lower the likelihood of their apps being uninstalled,” Google said.
