Telangana, Andhra Pradesh CMs pay tributes to Jyotirao Phule

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday paid tributes to social scientist and philosopher Mahatma Jyotirao Govinda Rao Phule on his 197th birth anniversary.

Chandrasekhar Rao said that the aspirations and actions of Jyotirao Phule, who dedicated his entire life to the fight against hegemonic values and for equality in all fields, are still an inspiration to the present generation.

KCR said that Jyotiba Phule had taken up activities almost 200 years ago with an aim to uplift Dalits, and tribal and backward communities against caste and gender discrimination.

The CM said that the path of social equality followed by Jyotiba Phule paved the way to bring a radical change in the traditional social values and systems in the Indian society of that time.

He noted that Phule’s action plan encouraged women and Dalits and Backward communities to fight for qualitative change.

The CM recalled that Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar himself declared Mahatma Phule as his ‘guru’. He stated that the state government is implementing development and welfare programs, according to its priority to fulfill the aspirations of great people like Jyotiba Phule.

With his inspiration, the state government is working towards the development of the weaker sections by following the policy of ‘Development is an antidote to discrimination’. The Chief Minister said that with the development and welfare schemes implemented by the state government, Dalits, tribals, weaker sections, and women in Telangana achieved good results in socio-political, economic, and cultural aspects and progressed towards social equality.

The CM said that most of the beneficiaries of the programs implemented by the state government are Backward communities. Special Development Fund for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, Ambedkar Overseas Scholarship, Skill Training for SCs, Free Electricity up to 101 Units for SCs, Special Development Fund for Scheduled Tribes, TS Pride for Entrepreneurs, Free Electricity up to 101 Units for STs, Self Respect buildings for Tribals and Upgradation of Tandas as Gram Panchayats are implemented exclusively for the development of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy said that Phule was a great man who dedicated his life to the downtrodden. He called him a pioneer of social justice and women empowerment movements in modern India.

He said Phule believed that development and justice are possible with education. “His path is our journey,” said Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer also remembered Phule on his birth anniversary.

The Governor noted that Phule was a champion of equal rights for all people and is remembered for his sociocultural reforms and for his contribution to women’s education and empowerment.

IPL 2023: ‘It was about cashing in, getting in right positions and executing’, says Pooran after his 19-ball 62

0

After leading his side to a thrilling one-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an IPL 2023 game with his sensational 19-ball 62, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batter Nicholas Pooran said that he felt like they can chase even 15 runs per over and it was all about cashing in, getting in the right positions and executing on a batting friendly pitch.

The Royal Challengers bowlers had reduced Super Giants to 23 for 3 in four overs, but Marcus Stoinis Stoinis’ 30-ball 65 gave them a platform, from which Pooran’s 19-ball 62 and Badoni’s 24-ball 30 took them to the doorstep of victory.

The equation came down to 5 off the last over. Unadkat took a single off the first ball of the last over from Harshal. But Harshal’s dipping slower delivery did the trick off the next ball as he castled Wood for 1. Bishnoi came to the crease with four needed off four and placed one sensibly in the gap at the point and scampered through for two. He then pulled the next one to fine leg for a single to level the scores.

The drama wasn’t over yet as with one needed off two, Unadkat hit one uppishly straight too long on where Du Plessis pouched a juggling catch. With one needed off one, Harshal Patel tried to run out Bishnoi, who had ventured out of his crease, at the non-striker’s end but he missed the stumps and a golden opportunity.

Avesh Khan then missed his swing as Harshal finally delivered the last ball, a slower dipping one, and the keeper Dinesh Karthik fumbled as the batters scampered through for a bye to win it for LSG.

The 27-year-old Pooran, who struck seven sixes and four fours during his blistering knock, credited the earlier partnership between Stoinis and Rahul that started the initial liftoff before he took over.

“We knew that the game was on, Stoinis and KL had a wonderful partnership. Stoinis played really well and it kept us in the game. We felt like we could chase 15 runs an over. We knew that in the back end of the innings, it gets much easier, the pressure is on. The wicket was really nice to bat on. It was about cashing in, getting in the right positions, and executing,” said Pooran at the post-match presentation.

The second ball I came in and smashed a six. It isn’t about getting a look in, if it is in my slot then I will smash it for six. I was reacting tonight, and I have been working really hard on my game, and this is how I want to be. I spent the last couple of years frustrating myself, trying to win games for my team; tonight obviously it came out well in the end.

I hope this is the season for me, in a good space and state of mind. Just want to enjoy my cricket, play with a smile and entertain, and win games for my team,” he added.

With the victory over RCB, LSG made it two wins in a row and they now face Punjab Kings in their next game on April 15.

Monte Carlo Masters: Thiem beats Gasquet in opener; De Minuar, Wawrinka also advance

0

Former World No. 3 Austria’s Dominic Thiem trounced Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-4 at the Monte-Carlo Masters opening round to earn his first win at an ATP Masters 1000 event since 2021.

Thiem produced a clean-hitting performance against Gasquet to triumph after one hour and 29 minutes on Monday. The Austrian had lost his past five matches at this level, having defeated Marton Fucsovics in Rome in May 2021 prior to his wrist injury.

The 29-year-old moved well throughout the clash and opened his shoulders to strike 18 winners. He now leads Gasquet 3-2 in their ATP Head-to-Head series, having won their past three meetings.

“At the start, I played very well. It was good for me that I broke him. I was going ahead the whole match. I am pleased with the performance. Richard is in good form, he already won a tournament this year. It is always tough but at the same time nice to play him because he has such a nice game and is a legend of tennis,” Theim was quoted as saying by the tournament website.

The Austrian enjoyed a run to his first tour-level quarterfinal of the season in Estoril last week and will look to back that up in the Principality, where he is making his seventh appearance.

Thiem, who has clinched 10 of his 17 tour-level titles on clay and has made two Masters 1000 finals on the surface, will next face sixth-seed Holger Rune.

In other action, Alex de Minaur of Australia made a winning start to his clay-court season, brushing aside three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray in the first round.

The 14th-seeded posted a dominant 6-1 6-3 victory against world No.54 Murray in an 86-minute encounter. The World No.19 did not face a break point and conceded only 11 points in total across his service games.

With his 13th tour-level win of the season, the Australian has improved to 3-0 in his ATP Head-to-Head series against Murray, who was making his first appearance in the Principality since 2017. This was De Minaur’s first win since claiming the biggest title of his career at Acapulco in February and snapped a two-match losing streak.

De Minaur, whose best result at an ATP Masters 1000 event was a fourth-round run in Indian Wells last year, will next play Jan-Lennard Struff. The German moved past Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 6-3.

On the other hand, Former champion Stan Wawrinka earned a comeback victory against Tallon Griekspoor, when he overcame the Dutchman 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round. The Swiss player struck 35 winners and sealed victory on his sixth match point to advance after two hours and 25 minutes.

Wawrinka, who won the title in the Principality in 2014, has lifted seven of his 16 tour-level trophies on clay, including Roland Garros in 2015. He will next play eighth-seeded American Taylor Fritz.

IPL 2023: RCB captain Du Plessis fined Rs 12 lakhs for slow over-rate, LSG’s Avesh Khan reprimanded

0

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Faf du Plessis has been fined Rs 12 lakhs fine after his team maintained a slow over rate during an IPL 2023 match against the Lucknow Super Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, here on Monday night.

RCB were already handed an on-field penalty for their slow over rate. They failed to begin the 20th over before the cutoff time and were forced to bring in an extra fielder inside the circle, leaving only four outside.

“The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 15 against the Lucknow Super Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Monday,” the IPL said in a statement.

“As it was the team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, captain Faf du Plessis was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” it added.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants pacer Avesh Khan has been reprimanded for breaching the Code of Conduct.

Avesh, who came to bat as the No.11 batter, was seen throwing his helmet on the ground after completing the winning run in the last delivery of the game.

The right-handed pacer admitted to level 1 offense 2.2 of IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.

Lucknow Super Giants beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by one wicket in a thrilling IPL 2023 match to register back-to-back victories.

RCB was hit by Marcus Stoinis (65 off 30) and Nicholas Pooran (62 off 19) storms as the two helped LSG pull off a sensational chase in a drama-filled last over after the RCB top order — Virat Kohli (61 off 44), Faf du Plessis(79 not out off 46), Glenn Maxwell (59 off 29) — had propelled them to 212/2 in 20 overs.

Cryptocurrencies important part of discussion under India’s G20 presidency: Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that cryptocurrencies are a very important part of the discussion under India’s G20 presidency.

“Given so many collapses and shocks in cryptocurrencies. We seek to develop a common framework for all countries to deal with this matter,” she said in Washington while participating in a roundtable meeting on the theme ‘Investment opportunities for the long term: India on the Rise’ with business leaders and investors.

It was hosted by the industry body CII, US India Business Council, and US Chamber.

The roundtable was attended by a diverse set of investors, including senior executives, private sector business leaders, venture capitalists, institutional investors, and representatives of pension and endowment funds.

Sitharaman apprised the group of the journey of India’s conscious policy choices and structural and governance reforms that laid the foundation for the Indian economy to support growth at its full potential.

“Free trade agreements are being signed in a much faster way nowadays. We’ve just concluded one with Australia. Earlier we concluded with UAE, Mauritius, and with ASEAN. We have extended the quota-free and tariff-free regime to least developed countries,” she said.

The finance minister also highlighted India’s robust digital public infrastructure such as Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Account Aggregator platform, which have enabled small entrepreneurs to access credit and other digital services.

In a world full of post-pandemic challenges, she said that India offers policy certainty, skilled manpower, high digital tech adaption rate resulting in a host of opportunities for investment.

Sitharaman exhorted the participants to become part of India’s exciting transformational journey towards greater prosperity, better standards of living for its citizens, and higher returns for investors.

La Liga: Barca held by Girona but extend lead to 13 points

0

FC Barcelona failed to open a 15-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga but nevertheless extended their advantage to 13 points after a 0-0 draw at home to Girona on Monday night.

Despite the lack of goals, it was an entertaining game, although Barca clearly missed the injured Ousmane Dembele and Pedri once again.

The first half may not have produced any goals, but it had plenty of entertaining football, with both sides creating chances.

Viktor Tsygankov fired just wide for Girona in the opening minute, while Robert Lewandowski and the lively Ansu Fati had efforts just wide at the other end before Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga had to react quickly after Santiago Bueno’s loose back-pass looked to be heading into the net, a Xinhua report said.

Taty Castellanos then fired into the Barca side-netting with the match only in its 12th minute, while at the other end, Raphinha dragged his effort wide.

Neither side had the game under control, with the best chance of the half falling to Ronald Araujo, whose header was clawed off the line by Gazzaniga – although it needed a VAR review to show the ball hadn’t crossed the line.

Franck Kessie replaced Sergi Roberto at the start of the second half to try and give Barca more creativity in midfield, but Girona had the first chance of the second half when Castellanos was put clean through only to slice his effort wide with only Ter Stegen to beat.

Gazzaniga was then out of his area fast to frustrate Raphinha, who then saw an effort blocked by David Lopez.

Both sides made changes, with Jordi Alba and Ferran Torres on for Barca and Ricardo Riquelme for Girona, but the game continued to be a succession of ‘ooohs’ and ‘ahhs’, rather than clear chances in the closing minutes until the fifth minute of injury time when Gavi headed just over and Lewandowski saw a back-heel scrambled away from the line.
