Omicron more deadly than seasonal influenza, reveals research

0

Adults hospitalized with the Omicron variant have a higher death rate than those hospitalized with seasonal influenza, even though Omicron is considered less virulent with lower case fatality rates than the Delta and Alpha strains, new research has revealed.

The study by Dr. Alaa Atamna and colleagues from the Rabin Medical Center at Belinison Hospital in Israel found that adults (18 years or older) hospitalized with influenza were 55 percent less likely to die within 30 days than those hospitalized with Omicron during 2021-2022 influenza season.

Influenza and Covid-19 are both respiratory diseases with similar modes of transmission.

To find out more, researchers compared the clinical outcomes of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 (Omicron variant) and those hospitalized with influenza at a large academic hospital in Israel.

Overall, 63 patients died within 30 days — 19 were admitted with influenza, and 44 were hospitalized with Omicron.

Patients with Omicron tended to have higher overall comorbidity scores, needed more assistance performing activities of daily living (washing and dressing), and were more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes, whereas asthma was more common in those hospitalized with influenza.

Respiratory complications and the need for oxygen support and mechanical ventilation were also more common in Omicron cases than in seasonal influenza.

“A possible reason for the higher Omicron death rate is that patients admitted with Omicron were older with additional major underlying illnesses such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease,” said Dr. Atamna.

The difference might also be due to an exaggerated immune response in Covid-19, and that vaccination against Covid-19 was far lower among patients with Omicron,” he added.

The double whammy of overlapping influenza and Covid-19 epidemics will increase the complexity of the disease and the burden on health systems, said the study to be presented at this year’s European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Copenhagen this month.

Kareena likes a mix of mainstream and off-beats films in her filmography

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, who recently kickstarted the shoot of her upcoming film ‘The Crew’, has shared that she likes to keep a healthy mix of mainstream and off-beat films in her filmography and that her titular role in ‘Chameli’ is a testament to that.

‘Chameli’, which was released almost 2 decades ago, was directed by Sudhir Mishra and saw Kareena playing the role of a sex worker – a brave choice for an actor in that era. The film received many accolades for its storytelling and Kareena’s performance which proved to be a milestone in her career.

Talking about making brave choices, Kareena told IANS: “I have always been a risk-taker and it’s because of my passion for acting. That’s the reason behind me doing a ‘Golmaal’ and an off-beat film like ‘Omkara’, a ‘Yuva’ or a ‘Chameli’.”

Kareena, whose streaming chat show ‘Hat Women Want’ on Mirchi Plus has been receiving a lot of audience appreciation, comes from the first film dynasty of India – the Kapoor clan but, being a star was never on her mind, she said. Instead, for her, it has always been about honing her craft as an artiste.

She further mentioned: “It was never on my mind to become a star. I come from a certain background so back then, I thought that being an exceptional actor, may happen or might not happen but to try and give my 100 percent to the part that I essay is not just my duty but also the responsibility that comes with the privilege.”

“I was 21 years old when I played Chameli at a time when nobody was doing films like that. Today, I’m 42 and people still talk about that film. It really built up a certain perception in the minds of the audience about my work. So, I have always had a good mix of commercial mainstream and off-beat cinema and I would like to keep it that way, even now you will see me in ‘The Crew’ which is more women-centric and commercial, and also working in the Indian adaptation of ‘The Devotion of Suspect X'”, she concluded.

YSRCP launches mega survey to reach out to five crore people

In a massive exercise to reach out to five crore people ahead of next year’s assembly elections, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling party YSRCP on Friday launched a state-wide survey.

Under the two-week-long campaign titled ‘Jagananne Maa Bhavishyathu’ (Jagan Anna our future), about 7 lakh grassroots workers will reach out to all 1.65 crore households in the state, covering a five crore population.

These workers including a wide network of newly appointed Gruha Sarathis and ward sachivalayam conveners have been tasked with conducting the door-to-door mega survey.

This is claimed to be the most expensive and on-ground campaign done by any political party in the country.

Education Minister Botsa Satyanarayana, Rajya Sabha MP Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy, MLC Marri Rajasekhar, and Lok Sabha MP Sanjeev Kumar were present during the campaign’s launch at the YSRCP Central Office in Tadepalli.

“Never in this country has any political party dared to go in public and seek a review of their performance. We are confident of our work and the people’s support and so we will present you the result of this mega people’s survey when the campaign culminates on April 20,” MLC Marri Rajasekhar told media persons.

The groundwork for the campaign kick-started a few months ago post and YSRCP have now managed to bring all the important stakeholders on a single platform. All the grassroots soldiers were directly in contact with the party’s central office, regional coordinators as well as MLAs for the last three-four months. They underwent mandal-wise training in mission mode where they were taught how to conduct public connect programs effectively.

Rajya Sabha MP Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy praised the cadre for all the hard work they put in the past few months. “I congratulate all the 7 lakh YSRCP grassroots cadres for participating in this extensive campaign. We are transparent and confident of exemplary support from people in this mega survey that we are undertaking,” he said.

The education minister said the visiting party workers would explain to the people a comparison between YSRCP and TDP governments by showing a pamphlet.

The workers will carry Praja Maddathu Pusthakam or a survey questionnaire for feedback. People will be asked five questions including the question of whether they trust Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for their future.

They would give acknowledgment to the participants in the survey. “Those who express their satisfaction with Chief Minister Jagan’s government will be given a receipt. Then, Gruha Saradhis will paste door and mobile stickers of Chief Minister Jagan with the permission of households,” said Botsa.

At the end of the survey, the party workers would request the public to give a missed call to the party’s dedicated mobile number 8296082960. As soon as they give a missed call, a voice call from the Chief Minister would be received by the caller, as a token of thanks.

Lok Sabha MP Sanjeev Kumar shared how the party came up with the slogan. “Maa Nammakam Nuvve Jagan’ is a slogan that came from the public itself during our Gadapa Gadapaku program. This was a resounding message that we got across the state and it only proves that Chief Minister Jagan is in the hearts of people,” he said.

WHO tracking VOI XBB.1.5, six other variants under monitoring: Centre to states, UTs

0

The Centre on Friday told the states and Union territories that currently the World Health Organisation is closely tracking one variant of interest (VOI), XBB.1.5, and six other variants are under monitoring BQ.1, BA.2.75, CH.1.1, XBB, XBF and XBB.1.16.

During a review meeting on the Covid-19 situation, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya virtually interacted with the health ministers of the states and union territories and advised them to ramp up vaccination of all eligible populations, especially of the elderly and vulnerable population groups.

It was highlighted that while Omicron and its sub-lineages continue to be the predominant variant, most of the assigned variants have little or no significant transmissibility, disease severity, or immune escape.

The prevalence of XBB.1.16 increased from 21.6 percent in February to 35.8 percent in March, 2023. However, no evidence of an increase in hospitalization or mortality has been reported.

It was also informed that while India has achieved over 90 percent coverage of primary vaccination, the coverage of precaution dose is very low.

Thiem enters maiden QF of season in Estoril

0

Dominic Thiem produced his best performance of the season at the Millennium Estoril Open where he cruised past Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-2 to reach his first quarter-final of the year.

The Austrian earned a confidence-boosting victory against countryman Sebastian Ofner in the first round and backed that up with a dominant display against Shelton. He crushed the ball off both wings to overpower the American, earning consecutive tour-level wins for the first time since he advanced to the semi-finals in Antwerp in October, reports ATP.

The former World No. 3 will aim to continue his run when he takes on fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut or Quentin Halys in the last eight. Thiem is up eight spots to No. 103 in the ATP Live Rankings and will crack the Top 100 again if he reaches the semi-finals in Estoril.

Thiem holds a 3-8 record for the year after Thursday’s win, which he will hope is the catalyst for improved results. The Austrian, who reached the Roland Garros final in 2018 and 2019, has historically excelled on clay. He has won 10 of his 17 tour-level crowns on the surface.

Shelton this week was making his tour-level debut on clay. The 20-year-old, currently No. 39 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, has enjoyed a standout start to the season, highlighted by his run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open.

Later on Thursday, Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles earned a comeback victory against second seed Hubert Hurkacz, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-2. By beating the World No. 12, Zapata Miralles scored his biggest career win by a measure of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings and picked up his second Top 20 victory after beating Taylor Fritz last year at Roland Garros.

Hurkacz fell short of what would have been his 27th tour-level quarter-final and his third on clay; he reached the last eight in both Monte Carlo and Madrid last season.

Zapata Miralles will meet Miomir Kecmanovic in the quarters after the Serbian cruised past Austrian Jurij Rodionov 6-0, 6-1 to continue his perfect debut week in Estoril.

The sixth seed was ruthless throughout the 64-minute encounter at the clay-court event, pulling the World No. 120 around with his dynamic shotmaking to reach his third quarter-final of the season. Kecmanovic has not lost a set in his two Estoril victories, beginning with a straight-sets win against Luca Nardi in the first round.

‘HanuMan’ theme track is a redefined version of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’

The theme track of the upcoming multi-lingual superhero Indian film ‘Hanuman’ was released recently. It is a powerful take on ‘Hanuman Chalisa’.

The film, directed and written by Prasanth Varma, is a blend of stories from Hindu mythology mixed with the prowess of modern technology.

The song celebrates Lord Hanuman’s strength, grit, and valor. The ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ is a famous hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is believed to have been composed by the poet Tulsidas in the 16th century. It is widely recited by devotees to seek the blessings and protection of Lord Hanuman. The film, which stars Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyer, and Vinay Rai in the lead roles, sets up Indian mythology’s first cinematic universe.

Talking about the track, director Prasanth Varma said: “Having ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in our film was an undeniable choice, but we knew that we wanted it to embody the very essence of our story. With great care and precision, our composers have woven a song that not only pays an ode to Lord Hanuman but also captures the soul of our film.”

The clips showcase the different scenes from Lord Hanuman’s stories, adding a rich visual element to the song’s spiritual message.

The director further mentioned: “The making of this hymn was an illuminating experience, allowing us to delve deeper into its profound message of peace and strength. Through relentless brainstorming, we have elevated its elements, making it a true tribute to the mighty Lord. I am humbled and forever grateful for this opportunity to offer our homage, and there couldn’t be a more auspicious day to release this song.”

The film tells the story of a young boy (Teja Sajja) who, with the blessings of Lord Hanuman, transforms into a modern-day superhero. The film has the vision and visual effects of a universal superhero adventure with a powerful yet relatable story at the heart of it.

The film has been produced by K. Niranjan Reddy and PrimeShow Entertainment while RKD Studios is presenting it in Hindi.
