Shikhar Dhawan played one of the best T20 innings I have ever seen: Brian Lara

0

Sunrisers Hyderabad lifted themselves from the bottom of the points table after a convincing eight-wicket win over Punjab Kings in their third game of the IPL 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday night.

Chasing a modest 144 for the victory that the visitors notched up thanks largely to PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten 99 runs, the Sunrisers romped home with 17 balls to spare.

Rahul Tripathi’s 74 runs and skipper Aiden Markram’s 37 runs put together an unbeaten 100-run partnership. Earlier, leg-spinner Mayank Markande starred with the ball for the Sunrisers, bowling beautifully to claim 4/15 in four overs. The dangerous Sam Curran and Shahrukh Khan were among his victims. Pace bowler Marco Jansen too bowled well, taking 2/16 in three overs.

JioCinema IPL expert Aakash Chopra heaped praises on the way Rahul Tripathi handled pressure early on and took his side home and said, “He had played a very ungainly inning to score 34 runs in the previous match in the Lucknow stadium. Anyway, sometimes you need to play these ugly innings’ to come into form. The hard work in Lucknow paid off today. He batted really well, despite the fact that there was slight pressure when two wickets fell and it seemed the total might get difficult to achieve, but Rahul Tripathi’s stature is growing with time. Last season also he scored runs but this year, he has come as an Indian-capped player now. He has secured promotion and this responsibility as a capped Indian player suits him.”

Earlier, Mayank Markande played a key role in restricting the Punjab Kings to a modest total and Aakash Chopra believes he will get more such chances, “Mayank Markande started with the Mumbai Indians and then he came around the Indian team as well. After that, he was like a passenger; he came to Delhi, then Rajasthan, and he didn’t get a chance to perform. But here he got a chance and utilized that opportunity really well. He will get more chances like these to perform after this.”

Shikhar Dhawan played one of the most memorable innings in the history of the IPL and was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Wickets kept falling at the other end and he played a lone hand and missed a well-deserved century by just one run. His performance impressed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach, the legendary Brian Lara as well.

Lara said, “I must commend Shikhar Dhawan. I think it is one of the best innings I’ve ever seen in T20 Cricket, the way he shepherds the strike and totally just controlled the game.”

Chris Gayle too spoke of Dhawan’s performance and said, “Shikhar was fantastic for his team, and when you keep losing wickets around you, it’s never going to be easy, and to hold the steady nerves and to actually get to that particular total and get to 99 as well, and I thought he deserved a hundred and that’s one of the best innings you will ever see in the IPL as well.”

IPL 2023: Virat Kohli shouldn’t open the batting for RCB, says Irfan Pathan

0

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) return home after a forgettable outing against Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous match in IPL. The RCB will face Lucknow Super Giants on Monday.

The Faf du Plessis-led side will look to learn from the mistakes and continue their winning momentum in front of a packed M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

For RCB to get the desired results in IPL, they need to perform as a unit instead of depending on the individual brilliance of a few. Virat Kohli, the RCB talisman, and captain Faf du Plessis have been the backbone of their batting unit so far.

According to former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Kohli is looking for an ominous touch in the T20 format lately but would definitely require the support of other batters in the side in TATA IPL 2023.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “This year RCB is banking on Kohli. If he plays well in every match, then the chance of RCB winning increases. Virat is one of the biggest superstars; not only RCB but fans of every team would want to see runs coming out of his bat. But other players in the team will have to lift their game and share the load.”

Opening the batting for RCB along with captain Faf du Plessis, Kohli has scored 103 runs in two games in TATA IPL 2023, but former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan claims the Delhi cricketer isn’t the apt choice to open the innings.

Pathan said, “This year is looking different for RCB as runs are coming out of Virat Kohli’s bat in the first few games. But it is no guarantee that he will continue scoring at the same pace (or for the remainder of the season) and win you every game. In a tournament like this, other batters in the RCB squad will have to be ready for the challenge and justify their talents and roles. Also, I don’t think Kohli should be opening the batting for RCB.”

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody also stated that the RCB side looks overly dependent upon Kohli and Faf, which is never a good sign for any team in a competition like IPL.

Moody said, “To me, RCB’s middle order looks weak, and teams will aim to take advantage of this fact and pick up the wickets of Kohli and Faf early. If the opposition teams manage to take a couple of wickets in the powerplays, they’ll be (very much) in the game against RCB.”

Aussies Purcell-Thompson win Houston doubles title in match tie-break

0

Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson dropped their first set at the Fayez Sarofim & Co US Men’s Clay Court Championship in the final, but the Aussies regrouped after a wild opener to claim their first title as a team.

The Aussies defeated third-seeded Britons Julian Cash and Henry Patten 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in what was their first doubles final as a team, claiming victory at the Houston ATP 250 with their third match win in two days.

The teams traded seven breaks of serve in the first set, but Purcell/Thompson did not drop serve in the second, saving the only break point they faced. They never trailed in the Match Tie-break and capped their comeback by winning the final three points of the match, states ATP.

Now boasting a 7-1 tour-level record, the team that sent Australia to the 2022 Davis Cup Finals championship round with a win against Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic are champions on the ATP Tour. It is a third title for the 25-year-old Purcell, who won the Houston crown and the Wimbledon trophy with countryman Matthew Ebden last season, and a second for the 28-year-old Thompson, who won the 2017 Brisbane title with Thanasi Kokkinakis. Purcell is also a two-time Australian Open finalist (2020 with Luke Saville, 2022 with Ebden).

Britons Cash and Patten, who won a record 10 ATP Challenger Tour titles together last season, fell in their first ATP Tour final. Their run backed up a semi-final showing earlier this season in Pune, and their three wins in Houston moved them up eight places to 26th place in the ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

Twitter situation is very frustrating: Substack CEO

0

Popular subscription newsletter platform Substack on Monday hit back at Twitter for blocking the ability to like or retweet any posts containing the word ‘Substack’, saying the whole situation is “very frustrating.”

The company CEO Chris Best responded to Elon Musk with a post on Substack Notes, saying none of his allegations are true and Substack links have been obviously severely throttled on Twitter.

“iiiWe have used the Twitter API, for years, to help writers. We believe we’re in compliance with the terms, but if they have any specific concerns we would love to know about them. We’d be happy to address any issues,” Best responded to Musk.

Musk last week denied that he blocked access to embedding tweets in posts on the online publishing platform Substack.

The Twitter CEO also posted that independent journalist and author Matt Taibbi, famous for releasing Twitter Files, “is/was an employee of Substack”.

Best denied the claim, saying Taibbi is not and has never been an employee of Substack.

“He writes a Substack and gets paid directly by his readers. That writers making money seems to be such a strange concept is telling.

“This is very frustrating. It’s one thing to mess with Substack, but quite another to treat writers this way,” said Best.

Twitter has restricted promotion and visibility for tweets with links to Substack posts — a move that has not gone well with people.

The Twitter change has become a huge problem for Substack writers, who use the Musk-run platform to promote their newsletters.

NBA: Raptors conclude regular season with win over Bucks

0

The Toronto Raptors closed out their 28th NBA regular season with a 121-105 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors finished the season with a 41-41 record for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. This is the ninth time the team has beaten the 40-win mark in their last ten seasons, reports Xinhua.

Toronto also wrapped up the season with a 27-14 record at home, including winning 11 of their last 12 games at Scotiabank Arena.

During the win, the Raptors guard Gary Trent Jr. returned to form with a game-high 23 points, including four 3-pointers in just 27 minutes of action. This was his third game since a seven-game absence due to elbow and back injuries.

Teammate Malachi Flynn had a season-high 20 points, while big man Precious Achiuwa recorded 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.

“Gary came out ready to go and got a bunch of good looks, Precious with his rebounds, played with good energy as well,” said the Raptors head coach Nick Nurse following the game. “Malachi was very good, really solid and fast out there. I thought he pushed the tempo out there.”

Nurse’s team ended the season with the most steals in the league with 772, a franchise record.

A part of this was forward O.G. Anunoby, who led the league with 1.91 steals per game. He became the second player in team history to lead in one of the five major categories, joining Marcus Camby, who led the league in blocks in the 1997-98 season.

“He’s really guarded literally every position and had some nights where he’s given some really, really good players a tough time. I hope he gets recognized for that,” Nurse praised his sixth-year veteran. “I can’t see who else does what he does defensively in the league.”

With the regular season over, the Raptors will enter the play-in tournament for the first time in franchise history. On Wednesday, Toronto will host No. 10 Chicago Bulls in a single-elimination game. The winner will face the loser of Tuesday’s match between No. 7 Miami Heat and No. 8 Atlanta Hawks to determine who faces the No. 1 ranked Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the playoffs.

Expelled Rep uses racial slur against Indian-American lawmaker

0

An Indian-American lawmaker serving in the Tennessee House of Representatives has said that a recently-expelled Democrat hurled a racial slur at him, calling him the “brown face of Indian supremacy”.

Sabi Kumar, 75, told Fox News that during a debate in the statehouse, Democrat Justin Jones, 27, shoved his finger in his face and said: “Kumar, they will never accept you.”

The remarks against Kumar came just before the Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel Reps Jones and Justin Pearson from the Legislature for their role in a protest calling for gun control after a shooting at a private school in Nashville that killed six people.

“I have been here for 53 years, and I have practice surgery. I have lived in Tennessee for 46 years, and people have been extremely kind to me. I was really surprised, and that these things should not happen, especially in a place where people are constantly guarding the values in such a way that discrimination and racism do not occur,” Kumar said on the ‘Tucker Carlson’ show.

Fox News reported that Jones was sanctioned for using a bullhorn when he joined with protesters, which State House leaders called “disorderly behavior”.

President Joe Biden criticized the move in a tweet, saying: “Three kids and three officials gunned down in yet another mass shooting. And what are GOP officials focused on? Punishing lawmakers who joined thousands of peaceful protesters calling for action. It’s shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent.”

Responding to Jones’ charge during the debate, Kumar said having lived in the country for 53 years, he never faced a racial slur.

“I live a good life, yet you, on tape, called me a brown face,” Kumar told Jones.

“You shove your finger in my face and said Kumar they will never accept you. You said it twice… You have insulted your colleagues. You have insulted the House of Representatives… You have insulted our speaker you have personally insulted me.”

He finished his statement by calling Jones “a talented young man” who has “a lot to offer”.

“…it’s sad what you just stated to me, and that’s what this is really about. He said ‘You see everything under the lens of race, when you join this body, you should just become one of us. Just assimilate”, Jones said in response to Kumar.

Kumar, the only non-white member of the Republican caucus, immigrated to the US from India in 1970, working as a surgeon in Miami from 1971 to 1977 after which he moved to Springfield.

Currently the Chairman of the House Insurance Committee, Kumar won the Tennessee House of Representatives 66th district in 2014 and has represented it since then.

Two cops killed in US traffic stop shooting

Two police officers were shot dead in a shooting during a traffic stop in the village of Cameron in northwestern US’ Wisconsin state.

The shooting occurred at around 3:38 p.m. on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Two officers were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, a motorist, was taken to a hospital and later died.

Local media reported on Sunday that details about the incident are still being investigated.

The Officer Down Memorial Page, an organization that tracks police officer deaths in the line of duty across the US, shows that this incident marks the second and third officer deaths in Wisconsin’s line of duty this year. The first occurred two months ago when a police officer was shot dead while seeking to arrest a suspect in Milwaukee.
