Severe solar storm hits Earth, strongest in last 6 years: Report

0

The Earth witnessed a powerful solar storm in nearly six years, causing auroras all over the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.

NOAA had earlier announced moderate G2 storm and G3 conditions between March 23 and 25.

However, the Earth witnessed a geomagnetic storm of magnitude G4, causing the NOAA to update its warning.

“Geomagnetic storm responses increased and G4 levels first reached Earth on March 24 at 12.04 EDT,” it read.

“CME influences continue and geomagnetic response escalated to the G4 (severe) storm level on 24 March at 12:04 am EDT (24/0404 UTC).

The G3 Warning remains in effect until 5:00 am EDT (24/0900 UTC),” it added.

NOAA said that the severe G4 storm can affect the power grid system with possible widespread voltage control problems, and spacecraft operations with an increased possibility of surface charging, and atmospheric drag risk on Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites.

According to NOAA, a powerful geomagnetic storm causes severe disturbances to Earth’s magnetic field, spewing solar material from coronal mass ejections (CME) – large expulsions of charged plasma from the Sun’s upper atmosphere or the corona.

The solar storm was the result of a “stealth” CME. It came from a coronal hole wider than 20 Earth that was spewing out solar winds at speeds over 2.1 million km/h, Live Science reported. And the storm was the most intense in the last six years.

The storm’s unexpected ferocity not only made auroras visible as far south as New Mexico in the US, but it also forced spaceflight company Rocket Lab to delay a launch by 90 minutes, Space.com reported.

We can expect more extreme space weather events like this powerful geomagnetic storm as the sun builds towards a peak in its 11-year solar activity cycle, expected to occur in 2025, the report said.

A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that four team members from Netherlands-based Th3rd have joined Snap as part of the acquisition.

According to Th3rd’s website, it creates digital 3D counterparts of people or products.

“These high-resolution digital 3D models are your building blocks for a huge amount of applications, like photos, videos, visualizations, animations, 360-degree photos, holograms, VR and AR,” reads the description.

Founded in 2014, Th3rd has been investing in AR-powered commerce in recent years and is building out its platform to leverage the technology.

In April last year, it introduced tools that turn retailers’ photos into 3D assets.

Meanwhile, Snap has introduced its new AI chatbot for Snapchat. It is powered by the latest version of OpenAI’s GPT technology.

Democracy under attack, says Rahul

A day after he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that democracy is under attack and that he is “not scared to ask questions about the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Adani Group”.

He made the remarks while addressing a press conference in Delhi.

“My voice is being suppressed,” Rahul Gandhi said and claimed that he spoke to the Speaker against the false accusations made by four ministers but was not allowed to speak.

He also alleged that the “relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gautam Adani is not new”.

“I will not stop asking questions about whose money is the Rs 20,000 crore that has come out from shell companies,” he added.

The senior Congress leader further said that he is here to defend the voice of the nation, adding: “I am not scared of prison sentence disqualification and others I am not that type of person and they do not understand me.

“I am not going to back down and will be on the principle.”

Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha a day after his conviction in the 2019 “Modi surname” defamation case.

The Gandhi scion who represents the Wayanad parliamentary constituency of Kerala was disqualified under provisions of Article 102 (1) (e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People’s Act.

Rahul was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in the case filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

India will achieve ‘developed’ tag with efforts of every single individual: PM

0

India will emerge as a “developed” nation by 2047 with the efforts of every single individual, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Saturday.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating Madhusudan Sai Medical Sciences and Research Institute of Satya Sai Ashram at Muddenahalli here.

“People ask how will India progress to become a developed nation within a short period by 2047, which marks the 100th year of independence. The answer with conviction and commitment would be “sab ka Grayson se” (with the efforts of all).

The dream will turn into a reality with the hard work of every single individual of the country. The government is encouraging collective efforts. The role of social and religious institutions in this regard is also important, PM Modi stated.

There were less than 380 medical colleges in the country and after BJP took over, the number increased to 650. Among them, 40 are located in aspirational districts. The number of medical seats has been increased in the country considerably, PM Modi said.

A number of doctors who passed out in 75 years, will now graduate in 10 years. There are 70 medical colleges in Karnataka and a double engine government has established one in Chikkaballapur, he noted.

The previous governments were engaged in enacting games over languages. No step was taken to ensure medical and engineering education in the Kannada language. No interest was shown. “Now, provision has been made to pursue medical education in all Indian languages, including Kannada,” PM Modi explained.

The opposition has treated the poor as their vote bank. But, BJP made it the highest objective to uplift the poor. The BJP is providing them with medicines at a cheaper price through Pradhan Mantri Janaushad outlets. The poor did not dare to go to hospitals and the government has made arrangements to get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh, PM Modi stated.

Anushka Sharma has a funny reaction on being called ‘Mrs Kohli’

Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, who was seen attending an event here, had a hilarious reaction when she was referred to as ‘Mrs. Kohli’ by the paparazzi.

A video shared by a celebrity paparazzi shows Anushka looking stunning in a black dress. As soon as she stepped on the red carpet, the photographers started referring to her as ‘Mrs. Kohli’ and kept screaming for her to look at the camera.

Hearing this, Anushka laughed and was heard saying: “Relax! Why are you all shouting? Wait! Mere kaan… I have not recovered from the shouting from yesterday.”

The photographers said that they missed her clicking her at events, and she replied ‘mere kaan bajj rahe hai.”

Recently, Anushka and her cricketer husband Virat Kohli decided to merge their respective foundations – Anushka Sharma Foundation and Virat Kohli Foundation – to launch a joint non-profit initiative aimed at helping those in need.

Jhulan went on to captain the Indian women’s national cricket team and is a role model for aspiring cricketers in the country. In 2018, an Indian postage stamp was issued in her honor. Jhulan holds the world record for the highest number of wickets taken by a woman in an international career.

ISRO begins countdown for launch of LVM3 rocket carrying OneWeb satellites

0

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday began the countdown for the launch of its LVM3 rocket carrying 36 satellites of the UK-based Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) scheduled for Sunday.

“The countdown started at 8.30 a.m and is progressing smoothly,” a senior ISRO official told Media.

During the countdown, the rocket and satellite systems will be checked, while fuel for the rocket will also be filled.

The Indian rocket LVM3 standing 43.5 meters tall and weighing 643 tonnes will blast off at 9 a.m. from the second launch pad at the rocket port in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh carrying OneWeb’s final installment of 36 Gen1 satellites weighing 5,805 kg.

The satellites will be slung into low earth orbit (LEO).

The LVM3 is a three-stage rocket with the first stage fired with liquid fuel, the two strap on motors powered by solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel and the third is the cryogenic engine.

The ISRO’s heavy-lift rocket has a carrying capacity of 10 tons to the theALEO and four tons to the Geo Transfer Orbit (GTO).

The upcoming rocket mission code is named LVM3-M3/OneWeb India-2 Mission by ISRO.

Just over 19 minutes after the rocket’s blast off, the process of satellite separation will begin. The separation of 36 satellites will happen in phases.

The OneWeb is backed by India’s telecom major Bharti Group and with the successful launch of the satellites on March 26, the company will complete the global footprint of its Gen 1 constellation.

OneWeb has 582 satellites now in orbit. On March 26 the total number is expected to go up to 618.

By completing the constellation, OneWeb is taking a pivotal step forward in delivering global coverage including India, the company said.

The upcoming launch will be the 18th one for OneWeb.

The first batch of 36 satellites was launched on October 23, 2022, from Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh with the LVM3 rocket formerly known as Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII).

ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) has signed a contract with OneWeb to launch 72 satellites in two phases for a launch fee of over Rs 1,000 crore, OneWeb Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said last October.

OneWeb Gen-1 is a 150 kg class satellite. The constellation comprises 648 individual satellites. Out of that 588 Active Satellites equally divided among 12 planes operate at an altitude of about 1200 km above the Earth’s surface.

Each plane is separated in altitude by 4 km to prevent an inter-plane collision.

The payload is a bent-pipe system operating in Ku and Ka bands. The forward link receives Ka-band signals from the gateway via the satellite Ka antenna. The return link receives Ku-band signals from the User Terminals (UTs) via the satellite Ku antenna, ISRO said.

Miami Open: Alcaraz charges into third round; Sinner, Fritz win openers

0

World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated Facundo Bagnis in straight games to storm into the third round at the Miami Open while Jannik Sinner of Italy and American Taylor Fritz also advanced in the ATP Tour event here.

Japan’s Taro Daniel continued his hot early-season form and snuffed out Alexander Zverev’s recent revival when he stunned the former World No. 2, 6-0, 6-4 in a second-round match on Friday night.

Returning as defending champion at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time, Alcaraz picked up where he left off at the Miami Open last year. The Spaniard raced to a 6-0, 6-2 win against Facundo Bagnis in just 65 minutes.

Alcaraz, who needs to lift the trophy in Miami to prevent Novak Djokovic from replacing him as No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, cruised to victory against an opponent who was chasing his maiden Top 10 victory and who never really settled into the second-round clash on Hard Rock Stadium.

Five days ago, Alcaraz delivered an imperious performance to snap Daniil Medvedev’s 19-match winning streak and lift his second title of the season in Indian Wells. The Spaniard did not need to reproduce his level from that match during his Miami opener, however, as he outclassed a wayward and overwhelmed Bagnis, who was playing his first Masters 1000 match in a year.

Sinner, after surging to the final on his event debut in 2021 and reaching the quarter-finals last year, kick-started his 2023 campaign here on Friday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Laslo Djere.

Although the 21-year-old Italian struggled to find his best level at times during his 84-minute triumph here, the 10th seed’s sharp returns proved enough to move past the World No. 58 Djere. Sinner converted five of 10 break points to improve his season record against opponents outside the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings to 13-0.

The seven-time tour-level titlist Sinner, who fell to Hubert Hurkacz in the 2021 Miami final and reached the semifinals in Indian Wells last week, is chasing his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown in Miami. He now holds a 9-2 record at Hard Rock Stadium, where his third-round opponent will be 21st seed Grigor Dimitrov or qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff.

Taylor Fritz put together a big mid-match streak en route to a 6-4, 6-1 win against his countryman Emilio Nava. The ninth seed reeled off seven games in a row from 4-4 in the first set to take control of his meeting with 21-year-old Nava, who had beaten former Miami champion John Isner for just his second tour-level win in the first round.

The one-sided scoreline masked some early difficulties for Fritz, who was broken in the opening game as Nava’s ultra-aggressive tactics initially paid dividends on Hard Rock Stadium. Fritz, who reached the fourth round in Miami in 2021 and 2022, reclaimed the break in the next game and then effectively adjusted his tactics to accelerate to a 60-minute triumph.

In other matches on Friday, Norway’s third-seeded Casper Ruud defeated Ilya Ivashka 6-2, 6-3; Andrey Rublev overcame American J.J. Wolf 7-6(3), 6-4 while Denis Shapovalov of Canada got the better of Guido Pella of Argentina, 6-3 3-6 6-3 and Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland stunned seasoned Spanish campaigner Roberto Bautista Agut, seeded 22 here, 6-4 7-6(5).
