7th batch of Google startups accelerator India now open

0

Tech giant Google on Monday announced to invite applications for the seventh batch of its startup accelerator programme in India that aims to nurture startups looking to leverage the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

Google for Startups Accelerator (GFSA) is a three-month, equity-free accelerator programme for Seed to Series A tech startups in India. It has, so far, helped to accelerate the growth journeys of over 130 startups in India.

For the next batch, Google is looking to support startups that are focused on utilizing transformational technologies such as AI, and ML.

“We are looking for Indian startups working across different sectors using AI and ML to solve complex problems and tackle the toughest challenges in their industry,” the tech giant said in a statement. Applications for GFSA are open until April 23.

Startups based in India and working across different sectors either using or planning to use AI/ML or data are eligible to apply. They should preferably be between Seed to Series A stages, Google said.

The selected startups will receive mentorship and support around AI/ML, Cloud, UX, android, web, product strategy, and growth.

In addition to mentorship and technical project support, the accelerator provides deep dives and workshops focused on product design, customer acquisition, and founders’ leadership development.

The program will conclude with a demo day to connect founders, increase startup visibility and drive connections to other ecosystem builders across India.

Miami Open: Alcaraz powers to the fourth round, to face Tommy Paul next

0

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain continued his ‘Sunshine Double’ quest on track, beating Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 6-0, 7-6(5) to advance to the fourth round of the Miami Open.

In a high-quality performance the Spaniard, who hit 27 winners to Lajovic’s eight, recovered from failing to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set against Lajovic, recomposing himself to seal his eighth consecutive straight-sets win on his fourth match point in one hour and 31 minutes on Sunday.

The 19-year-old needs to lift his fourth ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Miami to prevent Novak Djokovic from replacing him as No. 1 in the ATP Rankings. Alcaraz will become the youngest man to win the coveted ‘Sunshine Double’ with another title run in Miami. Roger Federer was the last man to win the ‘Sunshine Double’ in 2017.

The Spaniard will next play World no 19 Tommy Paul. The American has a 1-0 head-to-head lead against Alcaraz, having won in the Canada Masters 1000 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-3.

Paul reached the fourth round in Miami for the first time with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Twitter admits parts of its source code leaked online on GitHub

0

Twitter has admitted that parts of its source code were leaked online on GitHub, and has sent a copyright infringement notice to the open-source coding collaboration platform, the media reported.

In a court filing, Twitter also asked the US District Court for the Northern District of California to order GitHub to identify the person who shared the code and any other individuals who downloaded it, reports The New York Times.

GitHub has taken down the code and it was unclear how long the leaked source code was posted online.

The exposed source code adds to the challenges facing Musk’s Twitter.

“Technology companies often view such code as a closely held secret and do not share it for fear that it could give competitors an unfair advantage or reveal security vulnerabilities,” the report mentioned.

Musk did not comment on Twitter’s leaked code.

This month, the Twitter CEO announced the micro-blogging platform will open source all code used for recommending tweets on March 31.

Musk tweeted: “Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31.”

“Our ‘algorithm’ is overly complex and not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!” he added.

Also, Musk said that the company is developing a simplified approach to “serve” more “compelling” tweets and that will also be open source.

“Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust,” he added.

Last month, Musk said that the platform will make its algorithm “open source”, and improve it “rapidly.”

The Twitter CEO said that in the coming months, the company will use artificial intelligence (AI) to “detect and highlight manipulation of public opinion on this platform.”

Iran thrash Japan in AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup final

0

Iran thrashed three-time former champions Japan 6-0 in the 2023 AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup final in Thailand’s Pattaya.

Iran scored a spectacular opener when Movahed Mohammadpour collected a long pass from keeper Seyedmahdi Mirjajili before firing home in the fourth minute, reports Xinhua.

Japan suffered another setback in the eighth minute as Mirjajili scored again, this time from Ali Mirshekari’s assist.

Japan had no answer to Iran when they conceded again in the 20th minute after Movahed diverted Mirjajili’s throw to an unmarked Moslem Mesigar, who slammed the ball home.

In the 29th minute, Japan goalkeeper Shinya Shibamoto was dispossessed in his own area by Mohammadali Mokhtari, who tapped home the fourth into an empty goal.

Iran extended their lead in the 35th minute thanks to an own goal by Kosuke Matsuda before Mirshekari netted the final goal with seconds remaining.

“I’m so happy. This is the result of our hard work over the past year. I should thank all the players for playing so well in this tournament,” said Iran head coach Ali Naderi Hosseinabadi after the match.

Iran had finished unbeaten to top Group B before hammering Bahrain 11-0 in the quarterfinals and beating Oman 6-3 in the semifinals.

In the third-place playoff, Oman defeated the United Arab Emirates, joining Iran and Japan to qualify for the 2023 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Dubai this November.

Musk attacking us as he is stressed about AI safety: OpenAI CEO

0

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hit back at Twitter CEO Elon Musk for criticizing his for-profit company which is now owned by Microsoft.

During the ‘On With Kara Swisher’ podcast, Altman said OpenAI is “independent” from Microsoft. Altman said Musk has been critical of OpenAI on Twitter.

“Elon Musk is obviously attacking us,” he noted.

“To say a positive thing about Elon, I think he really does care about a good future with artificial general intelligence (AGI). I mean, he’s a jerk, whatever else you want to say about him. But he has a style that is not a style that I’d want to have for myself,” Altman was quoted as saying.

“But I think he does really care, and he is feeling very stressed about what the future’s going to look like for humanity,” the OpenAI CEO added.

Musk tried to take control of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, in early 2018 but Altman and OpenAI’s other founders rejected Musk’s proposal.

Musk later walked away from the company and reneged on a massive planned donation, according to Semafor.

Musk told Altman that he believed the “venture had fallen fatally behind Google”.

When Musk walked away, he resigned from its board in 2018 citing a conflict of interest with his work at Tesla.

According to the Semafor report, he also reneged on a promise to supply $1 billion in funding, contributing only $100 million before he walked.

In March 2019, OpenAI announced it was creating a for-profit entity so that it could raise enough money to pay for the computing power.

Less than six months later, Microsoft infused $1 billion in OpenAI, and the rest is history.

Kareena Kapoor Khan promotes reading and foundational learning

To promote foundational learning (in early grades) and support the #EveryChildReading Movement in the state that will be launched in April 2023, UNICEF goodwill ambassador Kareena Kapoor Khan visits Mitha Nagar Municipal School in Goregaon (West), Mumbai.

In her interaction with teachers and primacy-grade children, Kareena took a keen interest to understand how children coped with learning during and after the pandemic. She underlined how important it is for children to learn early to read, write and count; and the importance of offering learning options in children’s mother tongue. She then engaged the children in a fun storytelling session where she read an interactive story to stimulate their imagination.

“Today I met with young children and saw their immense enthusiasm to read and learn. As a mother, I understand the power of reading and storytelling that can inspire and motivate young minds, especially if it’s in a language that they understand well,” said Kareena Kapoor Khan.

“We need to create an environment where children would love to learn. School is one such space, and the learning environment at home is equally important. We need to make these spaces supporting and interesting for children to want to read. Teachers, parents, grandparents, can all help young children learn skills that will help them life-long.”

Rajeshwari Chandrasekar, Chief, of UNICEF Maharashtra, said: “It’s essential that we focus on foundational learning and equip our children with the basic skills they need to succeed in life. This includes reading, writing, and basic numeracy skills. Through initiatives like the Goshtiche Shaniwar Reading Campaign and #EveryChildReading Movement, we can inspire every citizen in the state to play their role in ensuring every child reads. With a strong foundation in place, children not only can enjoy the magic of stories but also unlock their full potential and thrive in the future.”

As per National Assessment Survey, conducted in November 2021, more than 30 per cent of children in Grade 3 in Maharashtra, are unable to read small texts. By Grade 5, this number increases to 41 percent of children not being able to read text appropriate to their grade level and to 43 per cent in grade 8.

The National Education Policy 2020 highlights that the ability to reading with understanding, along with writing and performing basic operations with numbers is the ‘necessary foundation and an indispensable prerequisite for all future schooling and lifelong learning’. The Government of India’s National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) Mission aims to achieve the goal of universal proficiency in literacy and numeracy for every child by grade 3 by 2026-27.

CSI to launch digital platform for heart patients

0

The Cardiological Society of India (CSI) will soon launch a digital platform that will guide people, patients, and caregivers on various heart conditions.

The platform, which is likely to be available for the public by August end, will have descriptions of heart problems, their preventions, and dos and don’ts.

According to Dr. Vijay Bang of CSI, “Research says that about 64 percent of patients check the Internet for health information when they have acute symptoms of any health condition. Also, about 50 percent seek information on the net after the first symptom. After that, they go to the doctor, and the rest themselves take the medicine or take drugs on the advice of the pharmacists.”

This highlights the need for a digital platform (website and app) to educate people about health issues.

“However, since CSI deals with heart diseases, which is the number one killer in the world today, we are developing a digital platform for the same,” he stated.

He said that too often, people go to the Internet and try to apply half-baked information and solutions for their heart conditions that end up doing more harm than good.

For example, many heart attack patients or their relatives ignore heart attack to gas and delay the treatment, which sometimes proves fatal.

Dr. Sudeep Kumar, faculty at the cardiology department of SGPGIMS, said, “Soon the digital devices based on machine learning and artificial intelligence will be able to predict heart issues and probable treatment, and requirements for admission.”

As of now, the devices are being developed in developed countries. And some of them have become successful.

“Soon these will also come to India soon and by entering lab reports data, scans and case history and clinical symptoms, they will help in the diagnosis of disease and probable treatment,” he added.

Indian-American exec pleads guilty to insider trading

0

An Indian-American, who was arrested and charged in July 2022, has pleaded guilty to 13 counts arising from his participation in a scheme to commit insider trading based on material, non-public information (MNPI) that he misappropriated from his employer.

Amit Bhardwaj, 49, the former Chief Information Security Officer at Lumentum Holdings Inc, traded on the misappropriated MNPI himself and tipped his associates with this same information so that they could place profitable trades in Lumentum’s acquisition targets, a Department of Justice said in a statement.

“Not only did Bhardwaj betray his company and cheat the securities markets, but when confronted by the FBI, he also schemed to conceal his illicit behavior and obstruct the investigation,” US Attorney Damian Williams said.

Bhardwaj, of San Ramon in California, pled guilty to seven counts of securities fraud and two counts of wire fraud — each of which carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison, and four counts of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud — each of which carries a maximum term of five years in prison.

According to court documents, Bhardwaj learned that Lumentum was considering acquiring Coherent, Inc in December 2020, after which he purchased Coherent stock and call options, and tipped three associates — his friend Dhirenkumar Patel, another friend, and one of his close family relatives — these individuals all traded in Coherent securities as a result.

Patel agreed to pay Bhardwaj 50 percent of the profits that he earned by trading in Coherent based on the MNPI provided by Bhardwaj. When Coherent’s stock price increased substantially following the announcement of the Lumentum acquisition, Bhardwaj, and his accomplices, closed their positions in Coherent securities and collectively profited by nearly $900,000.

In October 2021, Bhardwaj learned that Lumentum was engaged in confidential discussions with Neophotonics Corporation about a potential acquisition. He provided this information to Srinivasa Kakkera, Abbas Saeedi, and Ramesh Chitor, who traded in Neophotonics securities as a result.

Chitor and Bhardwaj agreed to split the profits equally. When Neophotonics’ stock price increased substantially following the announcement of the Lumentum acquisition in November 2021, the three closed their positions in Neophotonics securities and made collectively nearly $4.3 million in realized and unrealized profits.

According to the allegations in the indictment and statements made in public court proceedings, Bhardwaj drove to the homes of certain of his co-conspirators to encourage them not to tell the federal authorities the truth about their insider trading scheme, thus obstructing an FBI investigation into their conduct.

Bhardwaj is scheduled to be sentenced by District Judge Gregory H. Woods on July 11, 2023.

38 school girls test Covid positive in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri

0

A district health official said thirty-eight girl students of the Kasturba residential school in Mitauli block of Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district have tested positive for Covid-19 infection.

Lakhimpur Kheri Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Santosh Gupta, said that one staff member was also found Covid-positive during a contact tracing exercise on Sunday after which the entire campus has been turned into a quarantine center by the Health department.

This is the highest number of new Covid cases reported in a district in a day this year.

Gupta, who rushed a medical team to the Kasturba school, said samples of all 92 contact cases of the school had been sent for testing. The report of 38 among them was positive. Most of those who tested positive were asymptomatic, he added.

“All students and staff had been advised seven-day quarantine on campus and provided medicine kits. Condition of all students, barring two who have cold, is fine,” the CMO said.

Those found Covid-positive had been kept in a separate wing on the school campus, he added.

A mother and child wing in Motipur has been asked to keep 20 beds ready for any medical need among the students and staff on the campus.

“I personally spoke to students and assures them of all help. We are keeping watch on the health condition,” said Gupta. An ambulance had also been stationed at the Kasturba school in case of any emergency, he added.

With this, the number of active Covid cases had risen to 41 since March 23, he said.

On March 23, a girl student of Kasturba residential school in Mitauli block tested positive for Covid-19. Then, an elderly person from Behjam block and another person from the Mitauli block also tested positive in the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mahendra Bahadur Singh, said all preventive measures, including providing medical kits, sanitization, etc, had been ensured. He said there was no need to panic and urged people to observe Covid-19 protocol strictly.

Croatian airports begin to apply Schengen rules

0

Airports across Croatia began to apply the Schengen rules, as air passengers to and from Croatia and other Schengen area members will no longer need to go through passport checks, a significant move that marked the full Schengen membership for Croatia.

However, flights to and from Croatia and non-Schengen members will remain unchanged, Xinhua news agency reported.

“On the first day, March 26, we expect 108 departure and arrival flights, 53 of which are arrivals, and 10 of which are outside the Schengen area,” the Zagreb International Airport said in a press statement on Sunday.

Moreover, 55 flights are expected to depart on Sunday, of which 11 are outside the Schengen area, and 44 are within the Schengen area, according to the statement.

Croatia joined both the European Union and the Schengen area on January 1 this year and land border crossings were abolished the same day it joined the Schengen area.

WPL 2023 final: ‘Amazing feeling’, ‘historic win’, ‘feeling over the moon’; Mumbai Indians members rejoice after maiden triumph

0

Head coach Charlotte Edwards and bowling coach Jhulan Goswami praised their team for sticking together and building strong bonds as Mumbai Indians won their maiden title in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) by beating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the final, here on Sunday.

Player of the Match Nat Sciver-Brunt struck a superb 60 not out off 55 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries and raising 72 runs for the third wicket with captain Harmanpreet Kaur (37) and 39 for the unfinished fourth wicket partnership with Amelia Kerr (14 not out) to guide them to 134/3 in 19.3 overs after their bowlers Issy Wong, Hayley Matthew, and Amelia Kerr shared eight wickets between them as Delhi Capitals were restricted to 131/9 in 20 overs.

The Mumbai Indians players raced into the ground in celebration as Sciver-Brunt struck a boundary off Alice Capsey’s third delivery in the final over after she and Kerr had smacked 16 runs from the penultimate over to virtually put Mumbai Indians through to a historic triumph.

“Over the moon with the win. This is one of the greatest achievements in my career. It’s been an unbelievable group, they’ve stuck together brilliantly and some strong friendships have built, it has been amazing to be around,” Edwards told the official broadcaster as the Mumbai Indians players celebrated wildly on the ground.

“Harman’s been amazing as a captain, it’s been a wonderful experience,” she said.

Jhulan gave credit to the bowlers for restricting Delhi Capitals to a manageable total.

“All credit to the bowlers, thanks to Lotty (Charlotte), it was my first tournament as coach. Girls had a lot of faith and had the belief to do their best. We are all proud of them,” said Jhulan.

Wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia said the players’ emotions can’t be described in words.

(Winning the title is) Enormous, can’t explain how good it feels. Very happy and proud of the team. We were relaxed yesterday and were focusing on the little things. Think Issy (Wong) was quick, the full tosses were not low, she was trying to bowl yorkers,” Yastika said.

All-rounder Amelie Kerr, who claimed 2-19 and then struck two fours in the penultimate as she and Nat Sciver-Brunt took the team home, said it was an amazing win for an amazing franchise. She said they had trained and worked for such finishing moments.

“(It) helps when you’re going out and Nat Sciver is there to hit the winning runs. I guess you train for and work hard for those finishing moments. You just want to keep it simple and stick to your game plan. Nice when it comes off, it’s been an amazing win for an amazing franchise.

You just get into a zone but in between the balls you hear the crowd and it’s great but you go back into the zone once the ball is bowled. Charlotte is a legend, she’s one of the best and has a wealth of knowledge. She’s taken teams to finals but to get a team over the line is pleasing to see,” Kerr told the official broadcaster after the match.

Hayley Matthews, the opening batter and off-spinner from West Indies who claimed 3-5 to help Mumbai Indians restrict Delhi Capitals to a small total said it was exciting to be part of history.

“We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, happy to have won it at the end of the road. This is probably just under the T20 World Cup win for West Indies. Just to bring it home for the Mumbai family means a lot. I guess wickets are wickets. The wicket assisted me, happy to contribute to a team win,” she said.

Meg Lanning, captain of the vanquished Delhi Capitals, won the Orange Cap for being the highest run-scorer of the tournament while Hayley Matthews claimed the purple cap for being the highest wicket-taker of the tournament.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s catch at slip to dismiss Devika Vaidya against UP Warriorz got the catch-of-the-season award while Mumbai Indians’ Yastika Bhatia received the Emerging-Player-of-the-Season award.
