Everyone has the right to be heard, Rahul cites article 14,21

0

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has sought Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s permission to speak in the House to clear the air around his “Democracy” remark in London.

In a letter written to the Speaker on March 18, he said Parliament like any other institution is bound by the rules of natural justice contained in Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.

“They are a guarantee against administrative arbitrariness and ensure that every person has a right to be heard in a cause with which they are concerned. Surely, you would agree that Parliament of all institutions cannot abdicate the responsibility to respect this right when it doesn’t suit the ruling regime.” the letter read.

He also cited Ravi Shankar Prasad’s case which invoked the rule to give an explanation regarding comments made by Jyotiraditya Scindia in relation to him in Parliament.

“There are several examples available on the Lok Sabha Digital Library which show that this right isn’t restricted to responding to statements made within Parliament but extends to allegations made in the public domain as well,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi has insisted on speaking in the Lok Sabha as he is a member of the House. However, the BJP is demanding an apology from him but Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said in Rajya Sabha that the question of apology does not arise.

Manish Sisodia moves bail plea in excise policy case

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia on Tuesday moved a bail plea in a court here in connection with the now-scrapped excise policy case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The Rouse Avenue Court while issuing notice to the central agency, listed the matter for the next hearing on March 25.

On March 17, the court extended the AAP leader’s ED custody in the same case till March 22.

The court had, on Monday, sent Sisodia to judicial custody till April 3, in the same case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

After the CBI arrested the AAP leader on February 26, the ED also arrested him in the same case on March 9.

During the last hearing in the ED case, the court was apprised by the ED that important details have come up during Sisodia’s custody and he had to confront other accused persons.

The probe agency had informed the court that voluminous data from the former Deputy Chief Minister’s email and mobile is also being forensically analyzed.

Addressing reporters at the Kolkata airport before departing for Bhubaneswar, Banerjee said that she will stage the sit-in on March 29-30.

“Despite doing excellent work in the 100-day job scheme under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, we have been denied our Central dues on this count. We are yet to receive our pending dues under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

“We have spent money from our own exchequer in setting up 12,000 km of additional rural roads. We have received international accolades for our successes. But still, we have been denied our legitimate dues,” the Chief Minister said.

She went on to say that the demonstration will start at 12 noon at the base of the statue of B.R. Ambedkar and will continue till 7 p.m. on March 30.

Two of Uranus’ Moons may have active oceans: NASA study

0

One or two of Uranus’ 27 moons — Ariel and/or Miranda — likely have oceans beneath their icy surfaces and are actively spewing material into the space environment, according to a study by NASA.

Previously, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune were found as hosts to at least one icy moon that’s pumping particles into its planetary system.

In the study led by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland, US, researchers reanalyzed nearly 40-year-old energetic particle and magnetic field data taken by NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft — the only spacecraft so far to have gone to Uranus.

They found a trapped population of energetic particles the spacecraft had observed while departing Uranus — the turquoise, tilted oddball of the solar system.

“What was interesting was that these particles were so extremely confined near Uranus’ magnetic equator,” said lead author Ian Cohen, a space scientist at APL.

Magnetic waves within the system would normally cause them to spread out in latitude, he explained, but these particles were all cramped near the equator between the moons Ariel and Miranda.

Scientists originally attributed these features to Voyager 2’s possibly having flown through a chance stream of plasma being “injected” from the distant tail of the planet’s magnetosphere. But that explanation doesn’t hold, Cohen said. “An injection would normally have a much broader spread of particles than what was observed.”

The team suspects the particles arise from Ariel and/or Miranda through either a vapour plume similar to that seen on Enceladus or through sputtering — a process where high-energy particles hit a surface, ejecting other particles into space.

Yet scientists have already suspected Uranus’ five largest moons — Ariel and Miranda included — may have subsurface oceans. Voyager 2 images of both moons show physical signs of geologic resurfacing, including possible eruptions of water that froze on the surface.

“The data are consistent with the very exciting potential of there being an active ocean moon there,” Cohen said. “We can always do more comprehensive modeling, but until we have new data, the conclusion will always be limited.”

The findings, recently accepted for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, were also presented at the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in the US.

New Zealand to provide further humanitarian support for Turkey, Syria

0

New Zealand will provide further humanitarian support for Turkey and Syria where devastating earthquakes earlier this month killed more than 57,300 people, Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said on Tuesday.

“The earthquakes on February 6 have had devastating consequences, with almost 18 million people affected. More than 53,000 people have died and tens of thousands more have been injured,” she said.

This represents the third tranche of humanitarian funding provided by the New Zealand government, totaling NZ$4 million ($2 million) in order to support those in urgent need in the two heavily hit countries, Xinhua news agency quoted the Minister as saying.

The sum includes NZ$1.4 million to the UN Population Fund to deliver essential healthcare services for expectant and new mothers, and protection services for vulnerable women and girls in Turkey, she said.

New Zealand is also contributing NZ$2.1 million for Unicef’s operations in Syria to provide education, water and sanitation, medical care, and protection services for children and their families, said the Foreign Minister.

A total of NZ$500,000 in funding will also be made available to accredited New Zealand non-governmental organizations working with their local partners in Turkey to deliver essential relief, she said.

The funding was pledged at an International Donors’ Conference in support of the two quake-hit nations in Brussels on Monday, hosted by the European Commission, the government of Sweden, and Turkish authorities.

Tuesday’s announcement brings New Zealand’s total humanitarian funding for the response to NZ$8.5 million.

Google suspends Chinese app Pinduoduo after finding malware in versions

Google has suspended the Chinese shopping app Pinduoduo after finding malware in versions of the software, the media reported.

In recent weeks, several Chinese security researchers have accused Pinduoduo, a rising e-commerce giant with nearly 800 million active users, of developing Android apps that contain malware designed to monitor users, reports TechCrunch.

“Off-Play versions of this app that have been found to contain malware have been enforced on via Google Play Protect, Ed Fernandez, a Google spokesperson, was quoted as saying.

He also stated that Google has suspended Pinduoduo’s official app on the Play Store “for security concerns while we continue our investigation”.

Effectively, the tech giant has set Google Play Protect, its Android security mechanism, to prevent users from installing these malicious apps and to warn those who already have them installed, prompting them to uninstall them.

The report said that an anonymous security researcher has alerted of the claims against the apps and stated that they analyzed the apps as well, discovering that the apps were exploiting several zero-day vulnerabilities to hack their users.

It should be noted that Google Play is not available in China, and the malicious apps were found in the custom app stores of phone manufacturers Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi, according to anonymous security researchers.

For Himanshi Khurana, not followers but talent and hard work matter

Former ‘Bigg Boss 13’ contestant Himanshi Khurana said that having a number of followers on social media can never assure good work and for getting opportunities, what matters is talent and hard work.

She said: “When I started my career in the industry, I didn’t have the same number of followers as I do today but getting work was never an issue and, I don’t think followers are more important, the talent and hard work get you good projects.”

Himanshi is known for her work in Punjabi films like ‘Sadda Haq’ and she also entered the popular reality show ‘Bigg Boss 13’ as a wild card contestant. Apart from Punjabi films, she has also done several music videos.

While discussing the importance of social media followers in the industry, she shared: “Having a good amount of followers and a huge fan base can be fruitful sometimes but otherwise it depends on how good you are at the job.”

Talking about the importance of real talent in the industry, she added: “There are several people who have been working in the industry for years who might not have a good number of followers. But their talent on screen speaks louder. So, these artists have a special place in the audience’s heart just because of the talent they showcase on the screen and not because of their social media presence.”

Meanwhile, Himanshi is wrapping up her shoots for her upcoming film, ‘Fatto De Yaar Bade Ne’ whose release date has still not been announced.

‘I am not dead,’ says Tollywood actor Kota Srinivasa Rao

Veteran Tollywood actor Kota Srinivasa Rao said on Tuesday that social media has killed him, and has appealed to people not to believe rumors of his death.

He released a video to dismiss rumors about him circulating on social media. The 75-year-old said that those spreading rumors should not play with the life of anyone.

Srinivasa Rao said people should teach a befitting lesson to those spreading rumors. The actor termed the rumors about his death “unfortunate”.

“At a time when I am busy with the Ugadi festival tomorrow, the series of phone calls were disturbing. If there was some elderly person in my place, his heart would have stopped beating,” he said.

The actor also revealed that after the rumors about his death, 10 policemen came to his house to make security arrangements.

“If they want popularity or money, there are many ways to earn it but spreading such rumors is not proper,” he said.

The character actor has acted in more than 700 films. He made his debut in 1978 with ‘Pranam Khareedu’.

He joined BJP in the 1990s and was elected to Andhra Pradesh Assembly from Vijayawada East in 1999.

ChatGPT suffers mega outage, chat history unavailable for most users

0

As key social media websites suffer outages every now and then, it was the turn of AI conversational service ChatGPT to go down for most of the users, including paid subscribers, and their chat history also went unavailable for several hours.

ChatGPT, a product of Microsoft-owned OpenAI, suffered a day-long outage as users were unable to process writing, and coding as well as take its assistance for several topics.

The issue affected ChatGPT on the web and also impacted paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus which is now available in India.

OpenAI said in an update late on Monday that it was gradually rolling out a fix that “users will receive as capacity allows”.

According to website-monitoring service Downdetector, a much larger outage began and wasn’t fully restored nearly 12 hours later.

Despite the service being back online, there are some issues still occurring.

“Service is restored, but conversation history is still not available,” said OpenAI.

“We have a root cause for the loss of conversation history and are actively working to restore it now,” it added.

The latest update by OpenAI on Tuesday said: “We’ve fully restored ChatGPT service to all users. We’re continuing to work to restore past conversation history to users.”

An affected user posted on Twitter: “ChatGPT being down in 2023 is like the Wi-Fi being down in 2013.”

OpenAI last week announced that ChatGPT Plus, the subscription service to access its text-generating AI, is now available in India.

GPT-4, the refined AI model released by OpenAI, is included in ChatGPT Plus. Compared to GPT-3.5, the new AI model is more reliable, creative, and capable of handling complex instructions.

Moreover, customers on the paid tier gain early access to new features including GPT-4. ChatGPT Plus, which was released in the US in February after a brief preview period, costs $20 per month.

Twitter to soon increase long-form tweets to 10k characters: Musk

0

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday said that the micro-blogging platform will soon increase long-form tweets to 10,000 characters, along with simple formatting tools.

When a user posted, “Genius, @twitter and @elonmusk decision to allow long-form content on Twitter is brilliant product design. There will be fewer clickbait type of articles and people staying on Twitter for longer.”

Musk replied: “Increasing long form to 10k characters soon, along with simple formatting tools.”

“And making it much easier for writers to charge subscription fees for premium content.”
Musk had also said earlier this month that the company will extend “long-form tweets” to 10,000 characters.

Last month, the company announced that Blue subscribers in the US can post long tweets of up to 4,000 characters on the platform.

Only Blue subscribers can post longer tweets, but non-subscribers can read, reply, retweet and quote tweets to them.

Earlier, tweets were limited to only 280 characters, which still applies to non-subscribers.
