Kostic decides Derby d’Italia amid controversy

0

Juventus registered their fourth consecutive win on all fronts with a morale-boosting Derby d’Italia victory on Sunday night. They beat Inter Milan 1-0 at San Siro thanks to Filip Kostic’s controversial goal.

This was a big showdown with a great deal at stake, as Inter were desperate to end their poor run while Juve was seeking to close the gap to fourth place.

The battle started in favor of the Nerazzurri, who gave the away side a hard time, but Juve took the lead in the 23rd minute when Kostic hit in a screamer after some good teamwork, a Xinhua report said.

There was a question mark over the goal as Adrien Rabiot was suspected of a handball in the build-up, but after a VAR check, the referee gave it the green light.

The two sides broke out into a row after the match, as Danilo D’Ambrosio and Leandro Paredes were both sent off.

With the win, Juve still ranks seventh with 41 points, while Inter drops to third with 50.

Lazio moved into second place after a slender victory in the Derby della Capitale as they beat 10-man Roma thanks to Mattia Zaccagni’s angled drive.

Also on Sunday, leaders Napoli continued their sensational form as they sailed away with a 4-0 win over Torino, with Victor Osimhen bagging a brace and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Tanguy Ndombele completing the scoring.

In Sunday’s other fixtures, Sampdoria conquered Hellas Verona 3-1, and Fiorentina edged Lecce 1-0.

IND vs AUS: Plan was simple to bowl in good areas on the pitch, says Shami

0

Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is usually known to produce run-fests in white-ball cricket matches through its true bounce and short boundaries. But on Friday, during India-Australia’s first ODI, fast bowlers ruled, with Mohammed Shami leaving a big impact in getting the visitors out for a low total.

After being wicket-less in his first spell, Shami in his second spell picked three wickets in three overs while giving away only eight runs and it was a classy display of seam bowling in helpful conditions.

The pacer castled Josh Inglis and Cameron Green while forcing Marcus Stoinis to edge to slips in a spell that had the precision of a bull’s eye in archery.

“We had a simple plan. Like, we talk in team meetings about bowling in good areas and focusing on a good line and length. When we bowled our first spell, it was decently hot. After that, it got a little easy for us as the wind started to blow. The plan was simple to bowl in good areas on the pitch up front,” said Shami to Mohammed Siraj, who also took a three-fer, in a video posted on Media.

Shami was quick to highlight how important recovery has become in putting out great performances as he did in Mumbai.

“After bowling close to 40 overs in the Ahmedabad Test, I needed one-two day of recovery. After I completed the full recovery, then I came in to play the match,” he said.

“Team management also accepted that full recovery was needed. We have played so many matches over the years that we are hugely confident in our skills and abilities. But if we are able to recover properly, then we can put out great performances,” he added.

Shami further asked Siraj about his wicket-taking celebration, which is derived from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Siuuuu celebration.

“My celebration is simple. I’m a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, so I try to follow him. When a batter is bowled I celebrate the wicket in that fashion, but if he is caught at fine leg or similar fielding position I don’t do it,” replied Siraj.

Veteran Shami then shared important advice with Siraj. “I want to give you some advice. It’s good that you are someone’s fan. But as a fast bowler, you need to keep yourself away from such jumps.”

The second ODI between India and Australia will be played at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Kapil Sharma remembers KK on his show, sings ‘Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana’

Actor and stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma paid tribute to late singer K.K. by singing one of his most famous tracks ‘Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana’, from the 2001 film ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’ starring R. Madhavan, Saif Ali Khan, and Dia Mirza in lead roles.

Kapil welcomed Bollywood actress Dia Mirza on his show and shared a video on his Instagram handle from the sets while singing the song and the audience responded with excitement.

Kapil wrote in the caption: “This was not planned,@diamirzaofficial was there in our show n I just started humming the lines of this beautiful song n suddenly all the people started singing this song with me aur woh b bahut sur me, this is the power of good music..Attribute to our loving KK.”

Comedian Rajiv Thakur mentioned: “It was a great moment.” Another fan wrote: “For those missing iconic KK.”

One of Kapil’s fans appreciated his voice and wrote: “Love your voice keep singing sir.”

NASA mission to Saturn’s moon may unravel chemistry leading to life

0

An upcoming NASA mission to Saturn’s giant moon Titan aims to discover the development of life in the universe, the US space agency said.

The mission called Dragonfly is due to launch in 2027 and will reach Titan in 2034.

Dragonfly carries an instrument called the Dragonfly Mass Spectrometer (DraMS), which will shed light on the kinds of chemical steps that occurred on Earth that ultimately led to the formation of life, called prebiotic chemistry.

Titan’s abundant complex carbon-rich chemistry, interior ocean, and past presence of liquid water on the surface make it an ideal destination to study prebiotic chemical processes and the potential habitability of an extraterrestrial environment, the mission officials said in a statement.

DraMS will allow scientists back on Earth to remotely study the chemical makeup of the Titanian surface.

“We want to know if the type of chemistry that could be important for early pre-biochemical systems on Earth is taking place on Titan,” Dr. Melissa Trainer of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, said in a statement.

To accomplish this, the Dragonfly robotic rotorcraft will capitalize on Titan’s low gravity and dense atmosphere to fly between different points of interest on Titan’s surface, spread as far as several miles apart.

This allows Dragonfly to relocate its entire suite of instruments to a new site when the previous one has been fully explored and provides access to samples in environments with a variety of geologic histories.

At each site, samples less than a gram in size will be drilled out of the surface by the Drill for Acquisition of Complex Organics (DrACO) and brought inside the lander’s main body, to a place called the “attic” that houses the DraMS instrument.

There, they will be irradiated by an onboard laser or vaporized in an oven to be measured by DraMS.

“DraMS is designed to look at the organic molecules that may be present on Titan, at their composition and distribution in different surface environments,” Trainer said.

Organic molecules contain carbon and are used by all known forms of life. They are of interest in understanding the formation of life because they can be created by living and non-living processes.

OPS moves Madras HC against AIADMK general secretary poll

Deposed AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu O. Panneerselvam (OPS) has moved the Madras High Court against the election to the post of party’s general secretary.

The former Chief Minister said that the elections were a “sham”. The petition is likely to be heard as an urgent matter on Sunday morning before Justice Kumaresh Babu.

The urgent hearing is sought as the nominations for the post of general secretary of the party end by 3 p.m. on Sunday. The urgent plea by O. Panneerselvam is made to pre-empt Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) being made the party general secretary.

AIADMK interim general secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) filed his nominations for the post of general secretary for the elections to be held on March 26. Senior leaders of the AIADMK, Natham R. Viswanathan and Pollachi V. Jayaraman accompanied EPS while filing his nomination papers.

Candidates can file nominations from March 18 onwards and till 3 p.m. on March 19. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 20.

An official release said that candidates can withdraw the nominations on March 21.
The counting of votes will be undertaken on March 27.

Meanwhile, police have intensified the security at the AIADMK headquarters as the submission of applications for the post of general secretary has begun.

The decision to conduct the elections for the post of general secretary has commenced following the Supreme Court verdict that affirmed the September 2 verdict of the division bench of the Madras High Court that had validated the AIADMK general council meeting of July 11, 2022.

Twitter to soon open source all code used to recommend tweets: Musk

0

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Saturday said that the micro-blogging platform will open source all code used for recommending tweets on March 31.

Musk tweeted: “Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31.”

“Our ‘algorithm’ is overly complex and not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!”

Also, Musk said that the company is developing a simplified approach to “serve” more “compelling” tweets and that will also be open source.

“Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust,” he added.

Last month, Musk said that the platform will make its algorithm “open source”, and improve it “rapidly.”

The Twitter CEO said that in the coming months, the company will use artificial intelligence (AI) to “detect and highlight manipulation of public opinion on this platform.”

Earlier this month, the tech billionaire said that his interest has been switched from cryptocurrencies to AI.

Apple’s foldable iPhone may protect itself from drops

0

Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on a new technology that will enable iPhones and iPads with flexible screens to sense drops and automatically fold up on the way to the ground to minimize damage.

The information came from the tech giant’s new patent application named ‘Self-Retracting Display Device And Techniques For Protecting Screen Using Drop Detection’, reports AppleInsider.

According to the tech giant, the display itself can decide to break away, regardless of how the device folds at the hinge or whether a screen can be removed from a base chassis.

The display can detach or fold in a way that protects the screen in place of a possibly fragile hinge.

“Mobile devices with foldable and rollable displays can use a sensor to detect vertical acceleration (e.g., acceleration with respect to the ground) to determine if the mobile device has been dropped,” the patent application said.

“If the sensor detects that the mobile device has been dropped… the foldable device can retract at least partially to afford protection from the fragile display from striking the ground,” it added.

This means that there are then two options — retracting the screen or releasing it.

“(For example, the process) can include activating a release mechanism for a hinged connection between a first display and a second display of the electronic device when the vertical acceleration exceeds a predetermined threshold,” Apple said in the application, “wherein the activating reduces an angle between the first display and the second display below a threshold angle.”

Prez Murmu reaches Kanyakumari as part of 6-day South visit

President Droupadi Murmu, who is on a six-day visit to Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Tamil Nadu, on Saturday reached Kanyakumari.

Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Minister Mano Thangaraj, district collector Sridhar and other officials welcomed her at the airport.

The President was accorded a warm welcome at the Vivekananda rock memorial where she will spend time at the meditation hall. She will also pay a visit to the iconic Tiruvallur statute and return to Thiruvananthapuram in a chopper.

Heavy security is in place in Kanyakumari and traffic is diverted in many places of the district near the beach road.

South Asian dancers fight for representation after ‘Naatu Naatu’ Oscar performance

Nearly a week after the Oscars, the disappointment of a missed opportunity still weighs heavily on the minds of some South Asian American dancers, who are setting out to ensure it never happens again.

Many in the South Asian dance community were dismayed by the astonishing dearth of South Asian representation in the ‘Naatu Naatu’ performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

While singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava were on hand to perform their hit tune from Tollywood smash ‘RRR’, which made history for India that night by winning Best Original Song, they were not joined on stage by a single dancer of South Asian heritage, reported Variety.

Especially when, 14 years ago, they nailed it with the staging of A.R. Rahman’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ hit ‘Jai Ho’ at the 2009 Oscars as part of a widely celebrated four-minute medley.

“(The 2009 Oscars) had Indian singers and it was a multi-racial group of dancers and musicians,” explained Shilpa Dave, an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia who specializes in the history of representations of race and gender in the media.

“They were really showing that music has this global force. That’s why people didn’t have an issue at that time.”

While Sunday night did mark a historic turning point for India, which also won Best Documentary Short for Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, the glaring absence of South Asian performers on Hollywood’s biggest stage was the “last straw” for dancers like Achinta S. McDaniel, reports showbiz.com.

“Some people say, ‘just be happy with what we got,’ and that’s part of [the problem] – this idea of just accepting the scraps that are thrown to you,” McDaniel, the founder and artistic director of the Los Angeles-based Dance Company, told Variety.

“Just be happy an Indian song was nominated (and won). Don’t be mad about the overwhelming racism that appeared in the performance.”

McDaniel’s agent put her forward to serve as an associate consultant for the performance two weeks before the Oscars, but her rep was told that the AMPAS-selected choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon D’uomo, the Los Angeles-based duo known as NappyTabs, had already hired their team.

“(Equity is) a big part of what I’m interested in, and this has galvanized so many of my colleagues in the field,” said McDaniel.

“Now it’s enough. This is the last straw.”

McDaniel is hosting a Zoom on Saturday for South Asians in the dance community to unpack the events of the Oscars and plan ahead for a South Asian Summit this summer – an event she hopes to stage in conjunction with national organisation Dance/USA’s annual conference.

“This really lit a fire,” said McDaniel.

“So many people are joining this Zoom so we can start to make an actual change. It’s been too long since we’ve been quiet.”

Vikas Arun, a New York-based dancer, and teacher specializing in forms of Western and Indian rhythmic and percussive dance, told Variety there have also been conversations this week about building a cross-functional advocacy group that can rally on behalf of South Asian entertainers in moments of crisis.

Dave, who authored the 2013 book ‘Indian Accents: Brown Voice and Racial Performance in American Television and Film’, agrees the “next step” in the conversation is to further interrogate the advocacy of South Asian entertainers.

“It’s about thinking of representation and advocacy for not just directors, writers, and actors, but also performers on the larger scale as well,” said Dave. “I think dancers have been left out of this conversation. So when we’re looking at casting agencies and talent agencies, (we need to ask) where are the agents that are advocating the establishment?”

According to talents such as Ramita Ravi, another professional dancer, and choreographer whose agent put her forward for the Academy Awards, situations like the Oscars performance “unfortunately happen all the time.”

Interestingly, five days after the awards, there still remains some confusion about how the production transpired in the first place. It was initially thought that ‘RRR’ actors NTR Jr. and Ram Charan would perform the dance themselves, but Oscars producer Raj Kapoor detailed in an AMPAS blog that the actors declined, as they weren’t comfortable doing so with the time constraints.

As such, their characters were represented on stage by Lebanese Canadian dancer Billy Mustapha and American dancer Jason Glover, whom many wrongly assumed was of South Asian heritage.

One source told Variety that AMPAS then intended to fly over dancers from India to support the performance, but their work visas fell through, prompting NappyTabs to hire their own dancers.

While a source close to the production said AMPAS tried to ensure the original team from India was looped in on every creative decision, a team that included the film’s public relations team, S.S. Rajamouli’s son Karthikeya Rajamouli, ‘RRR’ producers and composer M.M. Keeravaani, the outrage at the resulting performance also highlights the divergence in what representation means for nationals versus those who are part of a diaspora.

“For many South Asian Americans in the U.S., we were born and raised in America and feel a very large sense of belonging here,” explained Ravi.

“For other generations, and especially immigrants or folks living in India, it’s a bit of a different equation – they might be excited to be invited to the table, while the diaspora wants to be part of building the table. In that way, I think the idea of representation sits very differently across the diaspora.”

Dave added: “The Indian cinema industry is the largest in the world, and when you’re coming from that background and environment, you don’t see the injustices that are happening in the diaspora and in Hollywood. So (the ‘RRR’ team) was thrilled to win an Oscar – and rightly so.”

But for those in the diaspora, representation matters greatly said Dave

SpaceX aces 2 orbital missions about 4 hours apar

0

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has successfully pulled off two orbital missions in about four hours, the company said.

A group of 52 Starlink internet satellites was launched to orbit at 3.26 p.m. EDT (12.56 a.m. IST), from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Then, at 7.38 p.m. EDT (5.08 a.m. IST), a Falcon 9 carrying the SES-18 and SES-19 telecommunications satellites lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

“Congrats to the SpaceX team on launching two Falcon 9 missions about 4 hours apart today, completing our 18th and 19th missions of 2023 so far,” the mission officials wrote on Twitter.

Both missions were successful. The Starlink satellites were deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO) on schedule, and the Falcon 9 successfully delivered SES-18 and SES-19 to geosynchronous transfer orbit.

It was the eighth liftoff and touchdown for the Starlink-launching Falcon 9 and the sixth for the rocket that lofted SES-18 and SES-19, according to SpaceX.

The 52 Starlink satellites are joining more than 3,700 other spacecraft in SpaceX’s huge broadband constellation, which will continue to grow far into the future. Elon Musk’s company has the approval to deploy 12,000 Starlink satellites in LEO, and it has applied for permission to loft 30,000 more on top of that, Space.com reported.

SES-18 and SES-19 are headed for geostationary orbit, about 35,700 kilometres above Earth. They aim to provide digital broadcasting coverage to North America, according to EverydayAstronaut.com

Whatsapp rolling out ‘Groups in common’ section within search bar on beta

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature for some beta testers on Android and iOS which allows users to see a list of groups they have in common with the contact they are searching for.

Beta users will see a new ‘Groups in common’ section when searching for contacts within the search bar, reports WABetaInfo.

The new feature gives users more information when searching for contacts within the search bar.

It is currently available for some testers, and is expected to be rolled out to more users over the coming days, the report said.

This feature is the same as the one rolled out on WhatsApp Desktop, which allows users to see the groups they have in common with their contacts without opening their chat information to see the list of groups in common.

Meanwhile, last week, it was reported that the messaging platform was rolling out a new “approve new participants” feature in group settings for some beta testers on Android and iOS.

First look of Prince William, Kate Middleton from ‘The Crown’ Season 6 unveiled

The sixth season of ‘The Crown’, which is currently filming in St Andrews, Scotland, is set to feature Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy as college-age Prince William and Kate Middleton, respectively.

The couple met in 2001 while studying at the University of St Andrews, and photographers caught the actors filming a scene on March 17 that appeared to be a potential meet-cute, reports Variety.

William and Kate’s relationship has been followed eagerly by tabloids since they met. They were engaged in November 2010 and got married on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey. They have three children: Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales, and Prince Louis of Wales.

It has been speculated that this season will focus on the Royal Family in the ’90s, including William’s mother Princess Diana’s death. Although it is believed they will not show the moment of the death, it will include the lead-up and aftermath.

A source told Variety that there is a strong desire within the production team “to get it right and handle (it) sensitively.”

In September 2022, ‘The Crown’ paused filming on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s death and also announced that they would suspend production on the day of her funeral.

Prince William has been under fire recently after his brother Prince Harry revealed in his autobiography that William physically attacked Harry after insulting his wife, Meghan Markle, reports Variety.

After reportedly calling Markle “difficult,” “rude” and “abrasive,” Harry wrote that William “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and knocked me to the floor.”
