Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul did really well in the first ODI against Australia to keep the national selectors interested ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against the same opposition later in June.
In chasing 189, after bowling out Australia for 188, India was in a precarious situation at 83/5 in 19.2 overs. Rahul, who had taken an excellent diving catch of Steve Smith and did a tidy job with his glovework, then stepped up in an under-pressure situation by slamming an unbeaten 75.
Along with Ravindra Jadeja’s 45 not out, he was involved in an unbroken 108-run stand for the sixth wicket to India get over the line and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
This was not the first time Rahul engineered a rescue act of this kind for India in ODIs. Previously, in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in January 2023, India was in a precarious situation at 86/4 in a chase of 216. Then, Rahul stepped up under pressure to slam a gutsy unbeaten 64 and take India over the line for a series victory.
“He has really done well to keep the selectors interested ahead of the WTC final. Two things, one for the ODI series when Rohit Sharma returns and the other for the WTC final. India can bolster their batting if Rahul can keep wickets,” Shastri told Star Sports after the match.
In the preceding Test series between India and Australia, Rahul opened the batting in matches at Nagpur and New Delhi. But low scores meant he was out of the eleven for games in Indore and Ahmedabad, as well as lost his vice-captaincy in the format too.
Shastri also claimed Rahul can bat in the middle-order and be the wicketkeeper India needs in the WTC final. Against Australia, in the absence of Rishabh Pant, KS Bharat kept wickets in all four matches but got mixed results with bat and gloves.
“Rahul can bat in the middle-order No. 5 or No. 6. In England, you have to generally keep wickets from far behind. You don’t have to keep up with the spinners a lot. He has 3 more ODIs to go before the IPL. He can cement his place in that Indian team,” added Shastri.
The WTC final between India and Australia will be played from June 7-11 at The Oval. This will be India’s second straight appearance in the WTC final, having lost to New Zealand in the 2021 tie at Southampton.

U.S. President Joe Biden has welcomed the International Criminal Court’s issuing of an arrest warrant against his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
The ICC accused President Putin of committing war crimes in Ukraine – something President Biden said the Russian leader had “clearly” done, Media reported.
The claims focus on the unlawful deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia since Moscow’s invasion in 2022.
Moscow has denied the allegations and denounced the warrants as “outrageous”.
It is highly unlikely that much will come of the move, as the ICC has no powers to arrest suspects without the cooperation of a country’s government, Media reported.
Russia is not an ICC member country, meaning the court has no authority there.
However, it could affect Putin in other ways, such as being unable to travel internationally. He could now be arrested if he sets foot in any of the court’s 123 member states.
Putin is the third president to be issued with an ICC arrest warrant.
President Biden said that while the court also held no sway in the U.S., the issuing of the warrant “makes a very strong point.”
His administration had already “formally determined” that Russia had committed war crimes during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Vice-President Kamala Harris saying in February that those involved would “be held to account.”
England captain Heather Knight, who is currently playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), feels the tournament has the bright potential to push the standard of women’s cricket forward and bring in investment.
“When the men’s IPL started, you saw a shift in the game. And that’s definitely the case here. The money involved is just crazy and I think the standard has been very strong.
There are going to be so many benefits from it. It is going to push the standard of the game forward and bring in investment,” Knight said on the first episode of Sky Cricket’s Daggers and Lyds podcast.

RCB had a poor start to the WPL, losing all first five games before finally registering a first win against UP Warriorz at the Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday. Heather recounted how the side getting their first win got them the guard of honor back from their hotel staff.
“It’s funny. We got back from the ground after our first game, our first loss, and there was a big guard of honor from all of the staff. We’d just lost, so we were like, ‘this is a bit embarrassing’.
We lost the next one, and so the number of staff sort of halved in size� we lost the next one and it was just a couple of chefs clapping. After the fourth one, no one was there, it was just tumbleweeds in the lobby,” the England player said.
“Finally getting our first win, the guard of honor was back! Everyone was holding cricket bats, there were rose petals thrown from the balcony, there was champagne, and there was cake. It was a lot of fun. I can’t imagine what they’re going to do if we turn things around and make the finals,” she added.
RCB, currently at the bottom of the points table, will face Gujarat Giants in their next WPL 2023 match at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday evening.

World No 2 Aryna Sabalenka cruised into her third final of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over last year’s runner-up, No.7 seed Maria Sakkari, in the Indian Wells Masters semifinals, here.
Sakkari had beaten Sabalenka in their last two clashes, which came in the group stages at the WTA Finals in both 2021 and 2022. But Sabalenka prevailed in 1 hour and 23 minutes in the Californian desert on Friday, increasing her head-to-head lead over Sakkari to 5-3.
“I’m just super happy with another final and super happy with the win against Maria. She’s such a great fighter, and it’s always tough matches against her,” Sabalenka said in her post-match press conference.
“I feel really good on the court right now, but I also have an understanding that it’s not going to be the same all the time. So that’s why I keep working hard, to make sure in those days when things are not working my way, I still will be able to compete and to get these wins,” she added.
Sabalenka has compiled a 17-1 win-loss record this season, and she has lost only five sets in her 18 matches this year. She is now tied with Caroline Garcia (17-7) for the most WTA main-draw match-wins in 2023. Sabalenka has also won five of her last six matches against the Top 10 opposition.

Video-sharing platform YouTube on Saturday announced that it is rolling out its streaming television service’s new “multiview” feature to all users that allow subscribers to watch up to four different programs at the same time.
