Twitch CEO Emmett Shear quits after 16 years

0

Video live-streaming platform Twitch CEO Emmett Shear has resigned with immediate effect after 16 years in the top role.

Dan Clancy, current Twitch President, will step fully into the role of CEO, effective immediately.

“He cares deeply about the Twitch community, its streamers, and our staff and understands what makes Twitch, Twitch,” said Shear in a blog post late on Thursday.

He started on Twitch in October 2006. Sixteen years and four months later, “I’ve never set up direct deposit a second time”.

Twitch Inc. became a fully-owned subsidiary of Amazon, and along the way “we have grown to more than 8 million streamers a month”, said Shear.

“With my first child just born, I’ve been reflecting on my future with Twitch. Twitch often feels to me like a child I’ve been raising as well. And while I will always want to be there if Twitch needs me, at 16 years old it feels to me Twitch is ready to move out of the house and venture alone,” Shear wrote.

“So it is with a great poignancy that I share my decision to resign from Twitch as CEO. I want to be fully there for my son as he enters this world and I feel ready for this change to tackle new challenges. I will continue to work at Twitch in an advisory role,” he added.

Twitch recently rolled out new moderation and safety features to improve the platform.

Indian Wells: Alcaraz returns to semifinals, defending champion Fritz bows out

0

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz of Spain surged past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, 6-4, 6-4 to book his spot in the Indian Wells Masters semifinals for the second consecutive season.

Alcaraz continued to gain steam in his bid for a maiden Indian Wells title as he marched to his first victory in four tries against the 10th-ranked Canadian.

“Today, the goal was to stay there. I knew that I was going to have my chance. I had to try to take it. Probably I played one of my best matches this season, in 2023. I’m really happy and want to keep going,” Alcaraz was quoted as saying by the ATP Tour.

In his last meeting with Auger-Aliassime, Alcaraz only saw one break point and wasn’t able to convert. He flipped the script on that narrative on Thursday, earning 12 break points and converting three to keep his 22-year-old rival at bay.

The Spaniard won 30 percent of his first-serve return points and 58 percent of his second-serve return points and saved three of the four break points he faced to come through a close contest in two hours.

The victory, Alcaraz first against a Top 10 opponent since he beat Casper Ruud in the US Open final, moved him within two wins of a return to the top of the ATP Rankings.

The 19-year-old Alcaraz, who is now 13-9 against Top 10 opposition, is seeking to become the second man to win at least three ATP Masters as a teen, having won Miami and Madrid last year. His countryman Rafael Nadal won six.

He will next meet Jannik Sinner, the pair’s fifth meeting and the first since their epic meeting in New York, in which he saved a match point to win the second-longest match in US Open history.

Earlier, the 21-year-old Sinner made history for Italy with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 takedown of defending champion Taylor Fritz, stopping the American’s nine-match winning streak at Indian Wells and reaching the final four at a Masters 1000 for the second time.

Sinner and Alcaraz have split their four previous meetings, with the Spaniard winning their two hard-court meetings.

Death toll in Colombia coal mine blast rises to 21

0

The death toll from a coal mine blast earlier this week in Colombia’s Cundinamarca has increased to 21 after the bodies of 10 trapped miners were found, President Gustavo Petro announced.

“I have just been informed by the Governor … that despite all rescue efforts, unfortunately, 21 people lost their lives in this tragic accident in Sutatausa,” Xinhua news agency quoted the President as saying on Thursday.

“Labour and business restructuring plans in coal mining areas have become increasingly essential. Each worker’s death is not only a business failure but also a social and governmental failure,” he added.

Cundinamarca Governor Nicolas Garcia said the rescuers had sighted the 10 bodies and had begun the extraction process.

He said families of the victims will have the full support of the government with social and psychological services, as well as economic aid.

Eight of the nine miners who survived the explosion were treated in hospital and later discharged, while the ninth remained under observation, according to Cundinamarca fire captain Alvaro Farfan.

Farfan said the National Mining Agency will begin an investigation to determine the cause of the blast in the interconnected mines belonging to the Minminer company, which have been in operation for 30 years.

The National Mining Agency said it has ordered the suspension of Minminer’s activities and initiated an evaluation of the state of the mines after the explosion.

iOS users to now see bookmark counts on tweets

0

Micro-blogging platform Twitter on Friday announced that iOS users will now see bookmark counts on tweets.

The company tweeted from its ‘Twitter Support’ account: “We love Bookmarks for saving Tweets to revisit later. Starting today on iOS, you’ll now see the total number of times a Tweet has been bookmarked on Tweet details.”

“Don’t worry, though — your Bookmarks are still private. We’ll never display which accounts have added a Tweet to their Bookmarks,” it added.

On the new feature’s help page, the company mentioned that it is planning to expand this feature.

Everyone on the platform can see bookmark counts on tweets, whether they are the author or the reader.

In January this year, Twitter CEO Elon Musk promised a feature that will allow users to easily bookmark tweets, and later the platform started rolling it out on iOS.

The new feature displays the bookmark option under the expanded tweet view which makes it easier for users to add a post to their bookmarks.

Meanwhile, last month, the micro-blogging platform removed captions from its social audio rooms ‘Spaces’ on iOS.

Tech giant Microsoft has announced its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered ‘Microsoft 365 Copilot’ for Word, Excel, Outlook, and more.

“This latest AI-powered offering combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with your business data and context — across all your Microsoft 365 apps, documents, and conversations — to turn your words into the most powerful productivity tool on the planet,” the tech giant said in a statement.

The new Copilot is integrated into the productivity applications and experiences people use and rely on daily for work and life, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Power Platform, Viva, and more.

For instance, the Copilot in Word “writes, edits, summarizes and creates right alongside people as they work,” it added.

With the help of natural language commands, Copilot in PowerPoint makes the production process possible by transforming concepts into a designed presentation.

Copilot in Excel helps to unlock insights, identify trends and create professional-looking data visualizations in a fraction of the time, on the other hand, Copilot in Teams makes meetings more productive by providing real-time summaries and action items directly in the context of the conversation.

“Microsoft 365 Copilot is currently in testing with select commercial customers to get the critical feedback required to improve these models as they scale. Specifics on pricing and licensing will be shared soon,” the company said.

The tech giant also announced ‘Business Chat’, a tool that uses Microsoft Graph’s real-time power to combine data from documents, presentations, emails, calendars, notes, and contacts to assist with writing emails, summarising chats, finding essential dates, and even creating plans based on other project files.

N.Korea test-fired missile in ‘warning to enemies’ holding drills

0

North Korea test-fired a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a show of the “toughest response posture” of its strategic forces against “aggressive” massive combined drills by the US and South Korea, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Friday.

The nation’s leader Kim Jong-un “guided” the launch on Thursday together with his young daughter Ju-ae, as it served as an occasion to “give a stronger warning to the enemies intentionally escalating the tension” on the peninsula, according to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

It cited the “unstable security environment” in the region attributable to “provocative and aggressive large-scale war drills”, referring to the South Korea-US Freedom Shield (FS) exercise underway in a program coupled with major field training, reports Yonhap News Agency.

The drill involving the Hwasong-17 was “aimed at confirming the mobile and normal operation and reliability of the country’s nuclear war deterrent”, the KCNA said.

It confirmed “the war readiness of the ICBM unit and the exceptional militancy of the DPRK’s strategic forces and strictly verified their reliability,” it added, using the acronym for the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The KCNA said the ICBM, launched at Pyongyang International Airport, reached a maximum altitude of 6,045 km and flew 1,000.2 km for 4,151 seconds before accurately landing on the preset area in the open waters of the East Sea.

The Hwasong-17, called by observers here the “monster missile”, was apparently shot at a lofted angle.

It came hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk-you had summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo amid Washington’s campaign to bolster trilateral security cooperation with the two key regional allies to counter the North’s nuclear and missile threats.

Kim was quoted as stressing the need to “strike fear into the enemies” and warning that the allies’ persistent military moves against the North will only bring “irreversible, grave threat” onto themselves.

He emphasized that the North will “react to nuclear weapons with nukes and frontal confrontation in kind” and called for “strictly maintaining the rapid response posture of the strategic forces to cope with any armed conflict and war”.

Apple experimenting with language-generating AI in ChatGPT era

0

As AI chatbots rise, Apple is now reportedly experimenting with language-generating artificial intelligence (AI).

The Cupertino-based tech giant recently held an internal event that focused on AI and large language models reports The New York Times.

Several teams including people working on the Siri voice assistant are testing “language-generating concepts” regularly. Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant have failed to understand various accents.

“The virtual assistants had more than a decade to become indispensable. But they were hampered by clunky design and miscalculations, leaving room for chatbots to rise,” the report mentioned.

Apple reportedly plans to join the AI race after ChatGPT has taken the world by storm.

The company, however, declined to comment on Siri. Voice assistants are “dumb as a rock,” said Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella in an interview with The Financial Times.

OpenAI has unveiled its next-generation AI engine, GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT and accepts image and text inputs.

“We’ve created GPT-4, the latest milestone in OpenAI’s effort in scaling up deep learning,” the company said in a blog post.

Last month, Google unveiled its new AI service ‘Bard’ to compete against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is opened up to “trusted testers” before the company makes it “more widely available to the public”.

In the future, the technologies of chatbots and voice assistants will converge, according to experts.

Google warns users of 18 bugs in mass-level Android phones

0

Google security teams have discovered 18 zero-day vulnerabilities in Samsung Exynos chips used in several top Android smartphones and wearables that may put those devices at risk.

Google’s Project Zero head Tim Willis said in a blog post that four most severe of these vulnerabilities “allowed for Internet-to-baseband remote code execution”.

Tests conducted by Project Zero confirmed that those four vulnerabilities allow an attacker to remotely compromise a phone at the baseband level with no user interaction, and require only that the attacker know the victim’s phone number.

With limited additional research and development, “we believe that skilled attackers would be able to quickly create an operational exploit to compromise affected devices silently and remotely”, said Google security researchers.

“Until security updates are available, users who wish to protect themselves from the baseband remote code execution vulnerabilities in Samsung’s Exynos chipsets can turn off Wi-Fi calling and Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) in their device settings,” said Willis.

Turning off these settings will remove the exploitation risk of these vulnerabilities, he added.

The affected mobile devices are from Samsung, Vivo, Google (Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series); any wearables that use the Exynos W920 chipset; and any vehicles that use the Exynos Auto T5123 chipset.

Google expects that patch timelines will vary per manufacturer, and affected Pixel devices have already received a fix.

“As always, we encourage end users to update their devices as soon as possible, to ensure that they are running the latest builds that fix both disclosed and undisclosed security vulnerabilities,” said Google.

4 Palestinians killed in Israeli raid in West Bank: Health Ministry

0

Four Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli soldiers who stormed the northern West Bank city of Jenin, the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement.

Another 20 Palestinians were wounded, four of whom were in serious condition, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the statement.

According to Palestinian sources and eyewitnesses, heavy clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants broke out in Jenin’s main street after an Israeli undercover unit stormed the city.

There has been no official statement from Israel on the shootings.

Israeli security forces have regularly conducted raids in Jenin in the past few months, amid an escalation of tension between Palestinians and Israelis in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said that 84 Palestinians had been killed by Israeli soldiers since January. Meanwhile, official Israeli figures show that 14 Israelis were killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians.
