NASA has unveiled the first spacesuits to be worn by astronauts on their journey to the Moon.
A prototype of the spacesuit was revealed on Wednesday at Space Center Houston’s Moon 2 Mars Festival, with a full fleet of training spacesuits to be delivered to NASA later this year.
The new suit — Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) — has been designed and built by Axiom Space, a space services company, as part of a deal by the space agency.
In 2022, NASA awarded Axiom a $228.5 million task order under a $1.26 billion contract to build the agency’s next-generation spacesuits to support the Artemis lunar missions.
“NASA’s partnership with Axiom is critical to landing astronauts on the Moon and continuing American leadership in space,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, in a statement.
Building on NASA’s years of research and expertise, Axiom’s next-generation spacesuits will not only enable the first woman to walk on the Moon, but they will also open opportunities for more people to explore and conduct science on the Moon than ever before,” he added.
The new Axiom spacesuits are based on NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit design.
They are created to provide increased flexibility, greater protection to withstand the harsh environment, and specialized tools to accomplish exploration needs and expand scientific opportunities.
Since a spacesuit worn on the Moon must be white to reflect heat and protect astronauts from extremely high temperatures, a cover layer is currently being used for display purposes only to conceal the suit’s proprietary design.
Axiom Space collaborated with costume designer Esther Marquis from the Apple TV+ series, “For All Mankind” to create this custom cover layer using the Axiom Space logo and brand colors.
Through Artemis, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, paving the way for a long-term, sustainable presence and serving as a gateway for future astronaut missions to Mars. Artemis III is scheduled to land near the lunar south pole in 2025.
“We’re carrying on NASA’s legacy by designing an advanced spacesuit that will allow astronauts to operate safely and effectively on the Moon,” said Michael T. Suffredini, Axiom Space president and CEO, in a statement.
“Axiom Space’s Artemis III spacesuit will be ready to meet the complex challenges of the lunar south pole and help grow our understanding of the Moon in order to enable a long-term presence there,” he added.
Prior to the mission, Axiom Space will test the suit in a spacelike environment.
In addition to furnishing the AxEMU spacesuits, Axiom Space will also provide systems training and real-time operations support to NASA, among other services.
An Indian rocket LVM3 is scheduled to launch the 36 low earth orbit satellites of the UK-based Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) on March 26 morning, the company said.
The OneWeb is backed by India’s telecom major Bharti Group and with the successful launch of the satellites on March 26, the company will complete the global footprint of its Gen 1 constellation.
OneWeb has 582 satellites now in orbit. On March 26 the total number is expected to go up to 618.
By completing the constellation, OneWeb is taking a pivotal step forward in delivering global coverage including India, the company said.
According to OneWeb, the second batch of 36 satellites will be launched by Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) rocket LVM3 at 9 a.m. Indian time on March 26.
The upcoming launch will be the 18 one for OneWeb.
The first batch of 36 satellites was launched on October 23, 2022, from Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh with the LVM3 rocket formerly known as Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII).
ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) has signed a contract with OneWeb to launch 72 satellites in two phases for a launch fee of over Rs 1,000 crore, OneWeb Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said last October.
Terming the global environment as gloomier, credit rating agency CRISIL Ltd on Thursday forecasted India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 6 percent for FY24 down from 7 percent estimated by the National Statistical Organisation (NSO) for FY23.
“A complex interplay of geo-political events, stubbornly high inflation, and sharp rate hikes to counter that, have turned the global environment gloomier,” CRISIL said.
On the domestic front, the peak impact of the rate hikes — 250 basis points since May 2022, which has pushed interest rates above pre-Covid-19 levels — will play out in fiscal 2024, the credit rating agency said.
According to CRISIL, consumer inflation is expected to moderate to 5 percent on average in fiscal 2024 from 6.8 percent in fiscal 2023, owing to the high-base effect and some softening of crude and commodity prices.
A good rabi harvest would help cool food inflation, while the slowing economy should moderate core inflation.
The risks to inflation are tilted upward, given the ongoing heat wave and the World Meteorological Organization’s prediction that an El Nino warming event is likely over the next couple of months, the credit rating agency said.
“India’s medium-term growth prospects are healthier. Over the next five fiscals, we expect GDP to grow at 6.8 percent annually, driven by capital and productivity increases. What is also good to see is the increasing sustainability footprint of capex,” said Amish Mehta, Managing Director, and CEO.
“At present, nearly 9 percent of the infrastructure and industrial capex is green. We see this number rising to 15 percent by fiscal 2027,” he added.
According to Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, India’s external vulnerability is expected to decline with a narrower current account deficit (CAD) and modest short-term external debt.
“While CAD is expected to narrow to 2.4 percent of GDP (about $88 billion) next fiscal from an estimated 3 percent (about $100 billion) this fiscal, its financing may face challenges as foreign portfolio flows remain volatile and external commercial borrowings are less attractive,” Joshi said.

K. Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who was all set to join the investigation of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case, is likely to skip the summon.
Sources said that she gave a letter to the ED on Wednesday saying her issue was pending before the Supreme Court and hence she needs time.
During her first appearance, she was reportedly confronted with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai, who had represented the South Group which allegedly gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to the AAP leaders allegedly used during the Goa Assembly polls.
Pillai has reportedly said that he was Kavitha’s associate.
On Wednesday, the ED recorded the statement of Buchchi Babu, the BRS MLC’s former auditor and also a member of the South Group.
Kavitha has maintained that she has never met former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has been arrested by the CBI and the ED in connection with the case, claiming that her name was being unnecessarily dragged into the matter.
According to the ED, Kavitha is also one of the representatives of South Group in the excise policy case.
Professional networking platform LinkedIn has added AI-powered writing suggestions and job descriptions to its services, becoming the latest platform to join the generative AI bandwagon.
LinkedIn Premium subscribers can now generate descriptions based on their experience using the new “enhance” tool, reports Engadget.
According to the company, the tool, which uses the same OpenAI models as ChatGPT, is intended to preserve “users’ unique voice and style” and will draw from their job experience and skills, as well as LinkedIn’s own “insights” into what makes a good profile.
Moreover, the professional networking platform also said that it is starting to test AI-written job descriptions.
In such cases, hiring managers will only need to enter the job title, company name, and a few other basic details, and LinkedIn will generate a detailed draft of a relevant job description, the report said.
Meanwhile, LinkedIn has introduced a new feature called — “collaborative articles”, which will use “AI-powered conversation starters” to begin discussions between “experts” on the platform.
The company will match articles with relevant members based on its skills graph, inviting them to contribute context, extra information, and advice for the articles.
The company believes that the system will make it easier for people to contribute their perspectives because “starting a conversation is harder than joining one”.

Action star Vidyut Jammwal and fashion designer Nandita Mahtani have reportedly called it quits after being engaged for two years.
According to a source close to Media, Vidyut, and Nandita were seen attending the haldi ceremony of Deanne Pandey’s daughter on Wednesday, however, the two were seen maintaining a distance from each other.
“Vidyut’s reclusiveness in the social circuit is a reason behind their distance,” said the source from the Haldi ceremony.
It was in 2021 when the two got engaged at the Taj Mahal in Agra and confirmed it on social media.

Union Law minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his London speech and said that people must raise their voices against those who defame India.

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is widely rolling out the ‘Text detection’ feature on iOS which allows users to extract text right out of an image.
The company is rolling out this feature to everyone after installing the latest WhatsApp for iOS 23.5.77 update, reports WABetaInfo.
When users open an image that contains text, they will see a new button that allows them to copy text from the image.
For privacy reasons, this feature is not compatible with the view once images.
Last month, it was reported that the messaging platform was rolling out a sticker maker tool on iOS, which allows users to convert images into stickers.
Earlier this week, WhatsApp was widely rolling out the ‘voice status updates’ feature on iOS, with which users can record a voice note and share it through Status.
The maximum recording time for a voice note is 30 seconds, and users can also forward voice notes from their chats to status.
The day’s proceedings in the Kerala Assembly on Thursday ended in 15 minutes time after the Congress-led Opposition demanded action against two treasury legislators and a few Watch and Ward staff who had misbehaved with the opposition women MLAs.
On Wednesday, the opposition legislators staged a siege at the Speaker’s office located next door to the floor of the Assembly, to protest against him. Following this the Watch and Ward staff were called to disperse the protesting MLAs.
In the melee, a few opposition legislators were injured, which included K.K. Rema.
On Thursday morning just before the Assembly proceedings began, Speaker A.N. Shamseer held a meeting of the party leaders and requested both sides to ensure things are brought under control.
In the meeting, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan were engaged in a war of words with each taking on one other, leaving others amused.
Satheesan said the right of the opposition to present leave for adjournment motion is being rejected outrightly to which Vijayan said it was not possible to allow the presentation of adjournment motion for anything and everything and the two continued to take on one another for some more time.
When the House assembled, Shamseer said what happened in the House complex and before the office of the Speaker was something unheard and unseen before in the history of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
“Such things should have never happened and the happenings were shot on mobile phones and that was not acceptable. We could have used technology that is available to jam recordings on the mobile, but we did not use it. So I request all should cooperate,” said Shamseer.
Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan said, “It was true that things might have gone out of hand, but all we did was to stage a democratic protest before the office of the Speaker.
“But the peaceful democratic protests were spoiled by two treasury bench legislators and a few Watch and Ward staff. We demand action against them.”
And, when the Question hour began, the opposition legislators trooped into the well and then shouted slogans before the dais of the Speaker.
Unable to proceed, the Speaker then suspended question hour and rushed through the proceedings of the House before adjourning the House for the day.
Engineering degree has been taken by the most famous filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma after 37 years he completed his B.Tech from Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur.
RGV, as the filmmaker is popularly known, took to Twitter to share a picture of his degree certificate and also his excitement.
“Super thrilled to receive my B tech degree today 37 years after I passed, which I never took in 1985 since I wasn’t interested in practicing civil engineering,” he tweeted. He thanked the university for the same.
The director had passed B Tech (civil engineering) with second class in the examination held in July 1985.
RGV also shared a picture with the professors of the university and wrote: “The uneducated me with the highly educated professors of Acharya Nagarjuna University.”
“I told the honorable vice chancellor Prof Raja Shekar garu I don’t deserve this honor but he insisted I do,” he added.
“Prof.Rajashekar garu..I usually feel horrible to be honored. But this time I truly felt honored to be with such honorable people on such an honor-filled occasion,” RGV wrote.
Sharing another picture taken while addressing the gathering, the director wrote: “Was trying to spoil Acharya Nagarjuna University students and scholars but they spoiled me.”

Food prices in Sweden surged over 20 percent for the past 12 months, registering the highest increase in over seven decades, according to official data.
Statistics Sweden said on Wednesday that food and non-alcoholic beverages became 20.95 percent more expensive between February 2022 and February 2023, compared with the same period of the previous 12 months, reports Xinhua news agency.
This is the biggest annual increase in food prices in Sweden since the beginning of the 1950s, it said.
“During the 1970s and 80s, food prices also increased a lot, but not as quickly as they do now. We have to go back to 1951 to find the most recent 12-month period when food prices increased by over 20 percent,” said John Eliasson, price statistician at Statistics Sweden.
Food prices increased broadly, with butter, eggs, and dairy products rising by more than 30 percent in the past 12 months.
Prices of vegetables surged even higher, with leeks and cauliflower rising by almost 80 percent.
Month-on-month, the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 2.74 percent in February compared to January.
“It is worrying,” said Alexander Noren, Swedish Television’s economic commentator, adding that if the trend continues, it would be difficult to tame such inflation.
The overall inflation in Sweden remains high for the past few months.
The data from Statistics Sweden also showed that the country’s inflation rate hit a 31-year record high of 12.3 percent in December 2022.
After a slight fall to 11.7 percent in January this year, it increased again to 12 percent in February.
