N.Korea fires missile ahead of S.Korea-Japan summit

0

North Korea fired a long-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Thursday, just hours before summit talks between the leaders of South Korea and Japan on pending bilateral issues and regional security.

South Korean’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the launch from the Sunan area in Pyongyang at 7.10 a.m., and the missile, fired at a lofted angle, flew some 1,000 km before hitting the waters, reports Yonhap news agency.

A month earlier, the North test-fired a Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Observers have raised the possibility of Pyongyang launching a solid-fuel ICBM, which is faster to fire and harder to spot in advance of take-off.

“The intelligence authorities of South Korea and the US are conducting a comprehensive analysis in consideration of recent movements related to the North’s missile development program,” the JCS said in a statement.

“We strongly condemn the North’s series of ballistic missile launches as an act of significant provocation that harms peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula, but also in the international community, and a clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions,” the JCS said, urging the North to immediately stop such launches.

Later in the day, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plan to hold a summit in Tokyo, in which the North’s nuclear and missile threats are expected to be high on the agenda.

The North’s growing nuclear and missile threats have created fresh momentum for Seoul and Tokyo to move beyond their historical feuds and work together to confront the security challenge.

The latest launch came amid the ongoing South Korea-US Freedom Shield (FS) exercise.

The North has decried the exercise as “preparations for a war of aggression” and threatened to take “overwhelming” action against military activities by the allies.

The North fired two short-range ballistic missiles Tuesday and what it claimed to be two “strategic cruise missiles” from a submarine two days earlier. The launches were seen as a response to the FS exercise.

K Kavitha to appear before ED in Delhi excise policy case today

BRS MLC K. Kavitha is scheduled to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with the central agency’s probe into the Delhi Excise Policy scam case.

This will be her second appearance before the ED after she was grilled earlier on March 11.

Before joining the probe on Thursday, Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, will also hold a press meeting at her home in the national capital.

A woman deputy director-level official will record her testimony under section 50 of the PMLA.

During her first appearance, she was reportedly confronted with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai, who had represented the South Group which allegedly gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders allegedly used during the Goa Assembly polls.

Pillai has reportedly said that he was Kavitha’s associate.

On Wednesday, the ED recorded the statement of Buchchi Babu, the BRS MLC’s former auditor and also a member of the South Group.

There are possibilities that the central agency might confront Kavitha on Thursday with Buchchi Babu, according to sources.

Kavitha has maintained that she has never met former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has been arrested by the CBI and the ED in connection with the case, claiming that her name was being unnecessarily dragged into the matter.

According to the ED, Kavitha is also one of the representatives of South Group in the excise policy case.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has nominated Indian-American Seema Shrivastava-Patel to be the next chair of the Board of Health and Environmental Control.

If confirmed, Shrivastava-Patel — who has served on the Board since 2018 and has been its Vice-Chair since 2021 — will become the first person of color and the second woman to lead the Board.

“Shrivastava-Patel is a highly respected member of the South Carolina Board of Health and Environmental Control. With this extensive knowledge of the agency and her experience as Vice-Chair, she is the best choice to lead a smooth transition that will propel the agency forward and advance South Carolina’s public health and environmental missions,” Governor McMaster said in a statement.

As a member of the Board, Shrivastava-Patel has helped navigate the agency through the Covid-19 pandemic, led the search for a new agency director, improved customer service, renewed a focus on recruitment and retention of staff, and emphasized the importance of measurable outcomes for the agency.

She has an extensive business background that includes a 20-year career in the convenience and food service industry, and as president of the Carolina Convenience Corporation.

“I am grateful to Governor McMaster for entrusting me with the opportunity to serve as the next Chair and look forward to working with my colleagues, as well as a team of talented and dedicated employees, to continue to move the agency forward for the people of South Carolina,” said Shirvastava-Patel.

The Board oversees the operations of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

The at-large seat on the Board was left vacant when former Chair Robert Bolchoz resigned from the position in December.

Shrivastava-Patel is a University of South Carolina graduate and resides in Lexington with her husband and two children. She is a first-generation American of Indian heritage.

The governor’s appointment is subject to Senate approval.

Finnish president to visit Turkey for NATO bid

0

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto has said that during his upcoming visit to Turkey, he would acknowledge the reception of the Turkish response to the ratification of Finland’s NATO membership.

Contact with the Turkish presidential administration has been frequent since last spring, Niinisto added on Wednesday and has accelerated in recent days.

The Finnish President also said he has been in contact with the Swedish Prime Minister, adding that it is very important to Finland that NATO membership both for his country and Sweden should materialize as soon as possible.

Niinisto’s working visit to Turkey this Thursday and Friday was announced by the Finnish presidential office earlier on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Niinisto will meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on Friday.

In addition to NATO membership and post-earthquake reconstruction, topics on the agenda include the geopolitical situation, and bilateral relations between Finland and Turkey, the presidential office said.

Finland and Sweden submitted applications to join NATO on May 18, 2022. So far, 28 of NATO’s member countries have ratified the applications, but Turkey and Hungary have not yet approved the Scandinavian countries’ memberships.

Canada announces additional military aid to Ukraine

0

Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand has announced additional military assistance to Ukraine.

Canada will donate nearly 8,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition, as well as 12 air defense missiles sourced from Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) inventory, to sustain the air defense systems currently deployed in Ukraine, Anand said in a statement issued by the Defence Ministry on Wednesday.

Canada will also donate more than 1,800 rounds of 105mm tank training ammunition, to support the donation of Leopard 1 tanks announced by Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, she added.

She also confirmed that the CAF started the shipments of the additional Leopard 2 main battle tanks pledged by Canada at the end of February, Xinhua news agency reported.

Canada has committed eight Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine in total. All eight tanks, and the previously announced armored recovery vehicle, ancillary equipment, and ammunition donated by Canada, are expected to be in Ukraine in the coming weeks, the statement said.

Since February 2022, Canada has committed other military assistance donations to Ukraine, including more than 200 Senator commercial pattern armored vehicles, a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System with associated munitions, 39 armored combat support vehicles, and anti-tank weapons.

CAF personnel are currently deployed to both the UK and Poland to assist with training members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces under Operation UNIFIER, Canada’s military training and capacity-building mission in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Since the start of Operation UNIFIER in 2015, the CAF has trained more than 35,000 members of the Security Forces of Ukraine, according to the Canadian Defence Ministry.

UN ramps up support for govt response to Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, Mozambique

0

The world body is ramping up support for government response in Malawi and Mozambique after Tropical Cyclone Freddy’s second landfall over the weekend, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

According to the authorities of Malawi, at least 225 people have been killed and 700 others injured. The cyclone has displaced 88,000 people and affected 186,000 in the country, OCHA added on Wednesday.

The UN and its humanitarian partners are ramping up the response in support of the government-led relief efforts. Authorities say there is a risk of further flooding, and many people are still stranded, said the office.

The government’s immediate priority is search and rescue. OCHA is coordinating with authorities to mobilize additional teams. But difficult weather conditions have hampered rescue efforts. In the past two days, at least 178 people have been rescued, including with the support of boats from the World Food Programme, it added.

Despite inclement weather, OCHA is moving vital supplies to the second-largest city of Blantyre and toward the hardest-hit districts. These supplies include food, shelter, bedding, kitchen sets, mobile latrines, medical supplies, and dignity and hygiene kits, said OCHA.

“We are looking to expand operations as soon as the rains clear.”

Humanitarian workers are supporting Malawi’s Emergency Operations Centre on coordination and assessments, and experts from the UN Satellite Centre are examining the storm’s impact, it added as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

In Mozambique, where both landfalls took place, the authorities said the cyclone’s second landfall has affected nearly 94,000 people in five provinces — in addition to more than 239,000 people affected by flooding in southern and central Mozambique when the storm first struck on February 24, said OCHA.

The impact of heavy rains and flooding is concerning, particularly as cholera spreads to more areas of the country. The number of cases is rising. As of Tuesday, 54 deaths and nearly 8,700 cases had been reported, it added.

In Zambezia province, more than 9,000 homes have been partially or completely destroyed. Large swathes of land are under water, and roads are not passable, making it difficult for aid workers to carry out assessments, it said.

Still, humanitarian partners there have dispatched enough medical kits for 150,000 people for three months, as well as rapid cholera tests, and tents and fuel to support the General Hospital in Quelimane, it added.

While the full humanitarian impact of the crisis will only be known in the coming days, it is clear that investments in government-led early-warning and early-action initiatives have resulted in fewer fatalities. However, the immediate humanitarian impact and longer-term economic implications for Mozambique are enormous, said OCHA.

UN committed to settlement of Cyprus issue: Official

0

The UN is committed to a resolution of the Cyprus problem, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo said here.

DiCarlo made the statement on Wednesday after separate meetings with leaders of the estranged Turkish and Greek Cypriot Communities in the divided capital Nicosia.

In a statement to reporters, the UN official said she made clear to Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar the commitment of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to a solution of the Cyprus problem and discussed with him the prospects of resuming negotiations to that end, Xinhua news agency reported.

After meeting DiCarlo, the Turkish Cypriot leader said that his “vision” for two separate Cypriot sovereign states must be accepted before negotiations could restart.

“We discussed at length the Cyprus issue and we just want to reiterate the commitment of the Secretary-General to supporting a resolution of the Cyprus issue,” she said after meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, who assumed office as new Cyprus President nearly two weeks ago.

Christodoulides said he requested a meeting with Guterres to explain a plan for the close involvement of the European Union in solving the Cyprus issue.

The UN has been involved in the Cyprus peace negotiations for almost half a century. The process, which was aimed at a solution on the basis of an UN-brokered blueprint for a federal Cyprus state and power sharing between the two Cypriot communities, has been stalled since the collapse of an UN-led international conference in Switzerland in 2017.

IND v AUS: KL Rahul gets a lot of balance into the team as a wicketkeeper, says T. Dilip

With India all set to face Australia in ODIs from Friday at the Wankhede Stadium, it also means the restart of the preparations for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup.

As India gets back to the 50-over fold after winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series 2-1, it is likely that K.L Rahul will be back in the playing eleven as a wicketkeeper-batter, apart from being the number five batter, a role where he’s had plenty of success in last few years.

India’s fielding coach T Dilip also hinted at the same, citing the balance Rahul brings to the playing eleven in ODIs. “We all know that KL Rahul is a wonderful player. He has a proven record. Even in ODIs, in the middle-order, he has proven enough as a batter. As a wicketkeeper, he gets a lot of balance into the team.”

“Since he is not someone who has picked the gloves just now — he has been doing that since a younger age – he adds a lot of things. Not much difficult to work on his wicketkeeping skills, apart from refining a few aspects,” he said in the pre-series press conference.

Dilip, who has been India’s fielding coach after R Sridhar moved on post the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, stated that improvements in fielding will continue to happen. “There are certain areas where we have certainly improved over a period of time. If you look at the number of direct-hit percentages in the (2022 T20) World Cup and that one direct hit from KL Rahul changed the course of the match.”

“That’s something we are looking at as a group and if you look at the overall ratio, even if there are no runouts, the number of times we have hit the stumps has improved a bit. That’s one area we will keep improving.”

Dilip has been part of the NCA setup and accompanied the Indian team for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021. He had worked with the Hyderabad Ranji team, India A, and junior teams for over 15 years.

“If you look at the last T20 World Cup, we had three wicketkeepers who played. That’s been a trend. If you see all the wicketkeeper-batters that are coming up in the lines, they have been fantastic batters too. That adds to the balance (of the team).”

“As a fielding coach, my responsibility is not only to work on their wicketkeeping skills, but also work on their fielding skills, so that whatever role the team requires according to the combination on that particular day, they are well equipped for that,” he added.

With all-rounder Hardik Pandya set to captain India in the first ODI as Rohit Sharma is unavailable due to personal reasons, Dilip thinks he can do the leadership job well in 50-over cricket after leading the team in various T20Is.

“When it comes to Hardik Pandya, he is the captain now officially. But he has been in our leadership group for all these matches and he’s already proven in T20s what he can bring to the table as a captain.”

“Irrespective of that, even if Rohit is the captain, he is part of our leadership group, and he adds a lot of value to the team. Not only you, but we all are also looking forward to him. He’s well-equipped to do it.”

Dilip signed off by saying the intensity that senior players like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja bring while being excellent fielders is something that can have a good effect on the youngsters in the team.

“They (Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja) have proven over a period of time, they have been role models and examples in terms of what they can contribute in fielding. Players do look up to them. What special I see as a coach when they come to practice is the intensity. Even after proving themselves, they carry that intensity, which definitely rubs on to the youngsters.”

LS adjourned amid protests; Minister says Rahul insulted Speaker

Lok Sabha on Wednesday was adjourned for the day till Thursday amid chaotic protests by both treasury benches and the opposition members.

As soon as the Lower House reassembled at 2 p.m., treasury members started raising slogans, seeking an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on democracy during a speech in London last week.

The opposition members led by the Congress, stormed into the well of the House with placards, seeking a probe by a joint Parliamentary committee (JPC) in the Adani matter.

Parliamentary affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that Rahul Gandhi through his comments on members not being allowed to speak in Parliament has insulted the Speaker directly.

He said that even the Indian diaspora from several countries has criticized Rahul Gandhi’s comments that democracy is threatened in India.

“Rahul Gandhi has cast aspersions on India. He has insulted the country. It is the height of insult as he has blamed the Speaker by saying that members’ mikes are switched off when they try to speak,” Joshi said.

Trinamool Congress, which had earlier skipped the opposition parties’ meeting earlier in the day, and had said that it would raise its own issues in Parliament, also lent passive support to protests by the Congress.

Trinamool members were seen standing near their seats as were members from the Samajwadi Party, BSP, JD(U), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), and NCP, during the protests by the Congress members.

Amid the continuous bedlam, Bhartruhari Mahtab, who was in the Chair, adjourned the House till Thursday.

This is the third day in a row when the Lok Sabha has failed to transact any business owing to protests.

Ashwin regains top spot in ICC Test rankings for bowlers; Kohli, Axar make big moves among batters

0

India’s ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed sole possession of the top spot in the latest ICC Test Rankings for bowlers, released on Wednesday after his haul of 6/91 in the drawn Ahmedabad Test against Australia.

Ashwin was jointly named Player of the Series for his 25 wickets at an average of 17.28. That performance has now propelled him to get on top of the rankings and be 10 rating points ahead of veteran England pacer James Anderson.

Talismanic batter Virat Kohli has also advanced seven places to 13th position in the ICC Test Rankings for batters after his Player of the Match effort of 186, ending a drought of 1205 days for a Test century. Australia all-rounder Cameron Green (up 11 places to 26th) and India’s Shubman Gill (up 17 places to 46th) have also progressed after notching centuries in Ahmedabad.

Left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel has moved up eight places to 44th on the list for batters and jumping one place to fourth overall on the list for all-rounders following an impressive 264 runs over the four matches.

Australia’s left-handed opener Usman Khawaja’s score of 180 in the drawn fourth Test against India in Ahmedabad has lifted him two spots to seventh position and to a career-best 815 rating points.

Travis Head’s topsy-turvy series ended well with the left-handed middle-order batter and recently turned opener maintaining his fifth place on the rankings for Test batters at a new career high of 853 rating points.

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell’s knocks of 102 and 81 in the epic victory over Sri Lanka in Christchurch has helped him reach a career-best eighth position as he touched the 800-point mark for the first time.

Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews is another one to move up the Test batting rankings, his scores of 47 and 115 taking him from 19th to 17th position. In the bowlers’ rankings, New Zealand captain Tim Southee went from 18th to 12th position after taking 5/64 and 2/57.

Post the end of the South Africa-West Indies series, Proteas captain Temba Bavuma moved up 14 places to 15th overall on the list for Test batters and his teammate Aiden Markram jumped 11 spots to 22nd.

For West Indies, seam-bowling all-rounder Kyle Mayers jumped 10 places to 32nd on the list for Test bowlers and three spots to seventh overall on the list for all-rounders.

In the Men’s T20I Player Rankings, Bangladesh batter Najmul Hossain Shanto’s scores of 51, 46 not out and 47 not out not only won him the Player of the Series award at home against England but also lifted him 68 places to 16th position.

UP working on plan to deal with cattle issue

0

The Uttar Pradesh animal husbandry department is working on an ambitious plan to deal with the stray cattle menace.

The department has taken the help of the state government’s consultant, Deloitte, to prepare a detailed blueprint of the plan to get rid of the stray cattle menace.

Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh said, “As per the initial plan, the animal husbandry department would allot around 25-30 acres of land to NGOs, institutions, or individuals after taking expression of interest and they would be responsible for the upkeep of at least 2,000 stray animals on the land provided to them. “The entire exercise will be conducted on a public private partnership (PPP) mode.”

He said that the interested party would be allowed to carry out commercial activities like production of bio-CNG, the sale of products made of cow dung and cow urine, and the setting up of a dairy.

“The interested parties will be given a maximum of 4,000 ‘desi’ cows. The idea is to improve the quality of the breed and save these cows from extinction,” he said.

The minister said that the plan would soon be brought before the state cabinet for approval.

He said, “Land will be given to interested parties free of cost on a 30-year lease. From the government side, the interested parties will be facilitated with high-quality semen of milch cow breeds like Sahiwal and Haryanavi.”

As per the agreement, the interested parties will have to invest money in infrastructure development like the construction of a boundary wall and other requirements to run a dairy. Officials said that the setup could also have poultry, goat, or lamb farms or a dairy and these activities could be commercialized to make the maintenance of stray cattle a profitable project.

The minister said that a proper agreement would be signed with the interested parties to ensure the animals did not end up in slaughterhouses.

Telangana Congress leaders detained during ‘chalo Raj Bhavan’ march

Congress leaders and scores of workers in Hyderabad were detained on Wednesday when they tried to march toward Raj Bhavan to “expose” the relationship between the Adani group and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Tension prevailed at the busy Khairatabad crossroads as police stopped the Congress rally which started from the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) office at Gandhi Bhavan and was heading towards Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the governor.

Police had erected barricades to stop the protesters. There were heated arguments between police officers and Congress leaders who raised an objection to the police action. As the protesters tried to push through the barricades, the police used force to stop them and detained them.

Those detained included Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, senior leader Mallu Ravi, TPCC working president Anjan Kumar Yadav, and leaders of women, youth, and student wings of the party.

The Congress had called for chalo Raj Bhavan to “expose” the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani.

The protesters carrying party flags and placards reading ‘save LIC’ were raising slogans against the “anti-people” policies of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Addressing the protesters at Khairatabad crossroads, Vikramarka alleged that the “Prime Minister was trying to shield Adani, who is involved in scams of billions of rupees”.

“The BJP would continue to destroy Constitutional institutions, public sector companies, and the lives of people until it is voted out of power,” he said.

By rejecting the opposition’s demand for setting up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the “Adani scam”, the Prime Minister was trying to “protect” Adani, the Congress leader alleged.

“He (Modi) is trying to protect those who are looting the country’s wealth while we are striving to protect the public assets,” he said.
