World No.1 Iga Swiatek moved one step closer to a successful title defense at the Indian Wells Masters after defeating 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round, setting the quarterfinal clash with Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, here.
In back-to-back matches against Grand Slam champions, Swiatek’s confidence showed in her match management. Her ability at just 21 years old to feel out her opponents and then suddenly break away and flip a set or tiebreak on its head is second to none.
In her wins over Bianca Andreescu in the third round and Raducanu in the fourth round, one could see how Swiatek’s surges left her opponents looking to the sky with demoralized grins. Andreescu, by her own admission, played a great match. But Swiatek slammed the door in the second-set tiebreak by playing seven perfect points.
Similarly, Raducanu played a solid match. She did well to keep pace with Swiatek early, matching the World No.1 from the baseline and defending valiantly from the corners. But a Raducanu double-fault while serving down 3-2, 0-30 gave Swiatek her best chance to break and the game’s best returner took her opportunity immediately.
Riding a run of 9 straight points, Swiatek broke open the match to lead 5-2 and closed out the set two games later on Tuesday night.
“Overall I feel like physically she is much further ahead than I am at this moment. I think I was able to stay competitive at the beginning of the first set. I think the first three games took over 20 minutes. And we were having some pretty epic rallies, and I actually think my defense got better,” Raducanu was quoted as saying by WTA.
“But that meant me running. I think that she just kind of ground me down a bit,” she added.
With a set in hand, Swiatek dominated the second set. With a clear game plan of holding steady and breaking Raducanu down with patience and prolonged rallies, Swiatek closed out the match after 1 hour and 24 minutes.
“I always want to finish [points] as fast as possible if I have a chance, but for sure I know that sometimes it’s not going to be possible here. I’m pretty sure that some of these shots would be winners in different conditions, but here the ball is bouncing and it’s slower,” Swiatek said.
“I’m always pretty good in defense. I knew that I can’t rush it and I can’t be patient, so I just stayed solid and I wanted to choose the right direction. It was more about that, not the speed and forcing everything to play a winner,” she added.
Swiatek finished with 22 winners and 14 unforced errors while converting 4 of 10 break points. Raducanu was held to 9 winners to 22 unforced errors, going 0 for 2 on break points.
Bidding to make her second consecutive WTA 1000 semifinal, the �21-year-old Swiatek will face Cirstea for the second time in her career. It will be the first meeting since their dramatic three-set duel at the Australian Open last year. There, Swiatek rallied from a set down to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
“It was an amazing match, and usually I don’t say that when I lose a match. Since then she just took off. She’s been playing amazing,” Cirstea said.
“She’s such a complete player, she moves great, and she doesn’t have any flaws in her game. She’s, from my point of view, the best mover we have. It’s really hard to find a weakness in her game. I like Iga, I think she’s the sweetest girl. She’s such a wonderful role model,” she added.
Cirstea booked her spot in her first Indian Wells quarterfinals with a big upset, knocking out No.5 Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Delhi airport again witnessed chaos on Wednesday morning with some passengers complaining about three-hour-long queues for immigration and security checks.
“It’s an absolute mess at the Delhi International Airport. Yet again. Three-hour-long queues for immigration and security checks. People are fainting and fighting. Most of the counters are not operational. Is this the new normal,” said an air passenger Tanushree Pandey on Twitter on Wednesday.
Reacting to this, Delhi Airport responded, “We are not happy reading about your experience.”
Many other people also reacted to this. “It is a daily affair and I am sure the ‘staff’ can see. The lines for immigration stretch beyond the entrance point. And people barge in and rush at the last minute…we are going to miss our flight and forge ahead,” said Harish Tyagi on Twitter.
Aviation traffic has recorded steady growth in the last couple of months and many airports, including the Delhi airport, have started witnessing longer queues of air passengers.
The number of air passengers at airports has already crossed the mark of four lakh passengers per day even during the weekdays.
As per the latest data, nearly 1.25 crore passengers were carried by the domestic airlines during January 2023 in the country as against 64 lacks during the same period last year. The passenger load factor or occupancy of the airlines remained on the higher side in the range of 80 to 90 percent.
During December 2022 the Delhi airport, particularly T3, reported long queues of air passengers. Taking note of the inconvenience faced by the passengers at busy airports in the country, the authorities, including the Ministry and other stakeholders had discussed the capacities deployed and requirements to process passengers smoothly in an important meeting with different stakeholders.

There is only a 50 percent chance that the first-ever orbital mission of SpaceX’s huge Starship vehicle will be a success, according to company founder and CEO Elon Musk.
According to Musk, Starship’s debut orbital test flight will likely launch from South Texas in the next month.
“I’m not saying it will get to orbit, but I am guaranteeing excitement,” Musk said at a recent interview at the Morgan Stanley Conference. “So, won’t be boring!”
“I think it’s got, I don’t know, hopefully about a 50 percent chance of reaching orbit,” Musk said.
The Tesla CEO noted that SpaceX is building multiple Starship vehicles at the South Texas site. These will be launched in relatively quick succession over the coming months, and there’s about an 80 percent chance one of them will reach orbit this year.
“I think we’ve got, hopefully, about an 80 percent chance of reaching orbit this year,” Musk said.
“It’ll probably take us a couple more years to achieve full and rapid reusability.”
The giant, stainless-steel vehicle will be the most powerful rocket ever to fly, featuring about 2.5 times more thrust at liftoff than NASA’s iconic Saturn V, Space.com reported Musk as saying at the conference.
SpaceX is developing Starship to get people and cargo to the Moon and Mars and perform a variety of other spaceflight tasks.
Starship consists of a giant first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship. Both elements are designed to be fully reusable, and both will be powered by SpaceX’s next-generation Raptor engines –A33 for Super Heavy and six for Starship.
And Starship is designed to be fully and rapidly reusable, which Musk views as the key breakthrough needed to make Mars colonization and other ambitious exploration feats feasible.

The winners of the Indian Super League Shield 2021-22 (Jamshedpur FC) and winners of the same in the 2022-23 season (Mumbai City FC) will fight it out in a one-off match on April 4, 2023. The match will be played between the matches of the Super Cup, with further details to follow in later updates.
The winners of the game will get a direct slot in the AFC Champions League 2023-24 Group Stage.
This slot will be determined between the winners of the I-League 2021-22 (Gokulam Kerala FC) and the winners of the Super Cup 2023 (TBD).

A 90-year-old NRI has duped of Rs 10 lakh by cyber thugs who asked him to download an app and pay Rs 10 as a fee for the application for renewal of his car registration number.
The victim, Rameshwar Choubey of Sahara Estates of Canada (Montreal), said he had saved the money to donate to a girls’ degree college in Nagwa in Ballia district and for the scholarship of primary class students.
The victim visited Lucknow on January 25 to meet his relatives and get his house repaired.
Choubey dialed a mobile number of the regional transport office in Lucknow after surfing on google and the call taker asked him to download the Anydesk App.
He was asked to pay Rs 10 as a processing fee after he filled out the form.
“I did the same and was asked to wait for a call by a senior official by 4 p.m. on the day of the incident but no one contacted me. A little later I got a message of deduction of Rs 5 lakh from my bank account and another Rs 5 lakh was deducted by the time I got the transaction stopped through my bank account,” he said.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Cyber cell, Triveni Singh, said that an FIR has been lodged and the police are working on the case.

South Korea will end the mask mandate for public transportation next week, lifting one of the last-remaining Covid-19 restrictions amid a stable pandemic situation, the government announced on Wednesday.
Vice Interior Minister Han Chang-snob said during a government Covid-19 response meeting that the lifting will go into effect on March 20, reports Yonhap News Agency.
The decision came as South Korea’s daily virus tally continues its downward trend, reaching 11,401 cases on Tuesday.
Currently, wearing a mask is mandatory on public transportation, including buses, subways, and taxis, as well as at hospitals, pharmacies, and other high-risk facilities, such as nursing homes, after the government lifted the indoor mask mandate on January 30 except for those places.
“Since the adjustment of mask-wearing requirements on January 30, the virus situation has been in stable condition, registering a 38 percent fall in the average daily virus infections and a 55 percent fall in new seriously ill patients,” Han noted.
But mask-wearing is “actively recommended for public transportation users during rush hour, high-risk groups, and those having symptoms”, he said.
The mask mandate will remain in place for medical facilities, pharmacies, and other vulnerable facilities, but pharmacies in open public spaces, such as discount stores or train stations, will be exempt from the requirement.
The latest decision comes two years and five months after the government made it mandatory to wear a mask on public transportation in October 2020 at the height of the pandemic.
The Vice Interior Minister also said the government will gradually resume international passenger ferry services between South Korea and China, starting from March 20.
Such services were suspended in January 2020 amid the pandemic’s onset.
With all mask requirements nearly coming to an end, the seven-day self-quarantine mandate for Covid-19 patients remains the country’s last major restriction as the nation heads back to pre-pandemic normalcy.

Local MPs, MLAs, district panchayat president, and Legislative Council members will be present at these press conferences.
The BJP came to power for the second time in the state by winning 255 seats in the state legislative assembly in 2022.
The state unit of the party will also celebrate the occasion with various functions.
The Uttar Pradesh government will launch a drive from May 1 to May 30 to verify the credentials of beneficiaries of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi and to benefit more eligible farmers.
The state’s Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said an amount of Rs 52,000 crore had been transferred to the bank accounts of 26 crore farmers since the Centre introduced the scheme in 2018.
He noted that still, many eligible farmers were not able to avail of the scheme because they did not link their Aadhaar details to their bank accounts or had not made available their land-holding details.
On the other hand, there were others who got benefits of the scheme despite not being eligible, he added.
“We have decided to launch a mega drive from May 1 to 30 where lekhpals would verify land records and upload the same on a website. Class one and class two officers of the department will visit districts to ensure that the saturation work is being done properly.”
He said the purchase of rye, Sarson, chana, and masoor at minimum support price will start from April 1.
RJD national president Lalu Prasad, his family, and others will be produced before a Delhi court on Wednesday in connection with a case related to the alleged land-for-job scam.
The Rouse Avenue Courts in the national capital had on February 27 issued summons to them in the case which concerns alleged appointments made in the railways in exchange for land parcels given or sold to Lalu Prasad’s family while he served as Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009.
In its charge sheet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that irregular appointments had been made in the railways, in violation of the standards and guidelines established by the Indian Railways for hiring.
It is alleged that the candidates gave Lalu Prasad’s family members land at extremely reduced prices — up to one-fifth of the going market rates — directly or through their close relatives and family members.
The CBI had filed the charge sheet in the case on October 10, 2022, against 16 persons including Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi and daughter, and sanctions were then obtained to prosecute them.
Special Judge Geetanjali Goel of Rouse Avenue Courts had on February 27 observed that prima facie, the on-record report shows that offenses have been committed under different sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Taking cognizance of the said offenses, the judge then summoned the accused persons.
The CBI has alleged that various residents of Bihar were appointed as substitutes in “Group-D posts” from 2004 to 2009 in different zones of Railways located at Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Hajipur.
In view of the above-mentioned allegation, the individuals themselves or their families transferred their land in the name of Lalu Prasad’s family members and company AK Infosystems Private Ltd, which was subsequently taken over by his family members.
It has been alleged by CBI that there was no advertisement or any public notice issued for substitutes’ appointments in the zonal railways.
