Indian companies need to reduce corporate flying emissions: Report

0

The majority of Indian companies are failing to set ambitious targets to reduce corporate travel emissions, revealed a ranking on business travel by The Travel Smart Campaign on Wednesday.

Globally, only 50 companies out of 322 have set targets to reduce business travel, with technology company Wipro paving the way in India.

Of the companies that have targets, only four companies meet the “gold standard”, i.e. report air travel emissions and commit to reducing them by 50 percent or more, by 2025 or sooner.

These are Novo Nordisk (pharmaceuticals, Denmark), Swiss Re (finance, Switzerland), Fidelity International (finance, Britain), and ABN Amro (finance, the Netherlands).

Although all 10 Indian companies are featured in the ranking report on business travel, only Tech Mahindra reports on air travel emissions specifically.

In the first-ever overview of reporting, including non-CO2 emissions related to business flying, the ranking finds that 40 companies are leading the way by reporting all greenhouse gas emissions associated with corporate flights.

Pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca and Pfizer and consulting companies Boston Consulting Group and Deloitte set the example by considering the full impact of flying in their reporting.

HCL Tech is the only Indian company that addresses the ‘hidden part of the iceberg’ of non-CO2 emissions associated with their air travel.

The climate impact of business flying extends further than CO2 emissions. On top of CO2, aircraft engines emit other gases — nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxide, and water — and particulate matter (soot). These are commonly referred to as non-CO2 emissions, and it is estimated that they account for two-thirds of total climate warming from flying.

Yet only very few companies reflect the total impact of business flights by accounting for non-CO2 effects.

Denise Auclair, corporate travel manager at Transport & Environment, said: “It is encouraging to see advancements taking place in India which are being led mostly by the technology industry. We invite these technology companies to continue to work on their travel policies and demonstrate leadership to catalyze change in other industries.”

Volkswagen, KPMG, and Johnson & Johnson are the top three emitters of the Travel Smart Ranking without a target to reduce their travel emissions. But setting such targets is possible and necessary, as companies of similar size and sector like McKinsey, Deloitte, and AstraZeneca have done so.

The study shows that if 10 percent of companies — the biggest emitters of the ranking — set 50 percent reduction targets, this would go half the way towards achieving the global target of minus 50 percent in corporate air travel emissions by 2025.

Reducing aviation emissions is now more crucial than ever if we are to stay within 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming.

For the critical decade until 2030, the best way to reduce aviation emissions is to fly less, as the timing for scale-up of sustainable fuels and zero-emissions aircraft is currently post-2030, and offsetting cannot substitute for reducing emissions.

The Travel Smart Campaign invites companies to set ambitious targets to reduce corporate travel emissions, switch from air-to-rail travel where possible, and privilege virtual collaboration as a substitute to long-haul flying.

One way to achieve reduced flying among corporate entities in India is to get involved with cBalance’s flagship ‘FairTravel program’. The organization is working with pioneering IT and business process outsourcing and finance companies in India to help them reduce their air travel emissions and rethink their travel choices.

cBalance has been working with Wipro since 2015, helping them adopt a more responsible and fair business travel approach, providing carbon footprinting, bespoke training, and communications support for corporate sustainability teams, among other things.

As a result, Wipro has achieved a 15-20 percent reduction in air travel emissions, between the 2015 and 2020 period.

Auclair concludes: “Large companies have a pivotal role to play in reducing their business travel emissions. The means to achieve this are more accessible than ever before: rail travel when distances permit it and virtual collaboration to avoid long-haul flights.”

Iran says ‘good’ diplomatic moves underway to normalise ties with Bahrain

0

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani has said that “good” diplomatic moves are being made toward the normalization of Iran’s relations with Bahrain.

He made the remarks on Tuesday in an interview with the Iranian state-own Arabic-language news channel Al-Alam, expressing optimism that Iran would normalize its ties with Bahrain, as well as other regional countries.

Kanaani stressed that the Iranian government is determined to improve relations with all regional states based on common interests.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, the Spokesperson said the recent detente between Iran and Saudi Arabia will have other positive regional impacts, such as leading to a rapprochement between Iran and Bahrain, Xinhua news agency reported.

Media reports said on Tuesday that direct talks are being held between Iran and Bahrain on the restoration of bilateral relations, and the results are expected to be announced in the near future.

Bahrain severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 after Saudi Arabia cut its ties with Tehran in response to the attacks on the Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the kingdom executed a Shia cleric.

China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran on Friday announced that the latter two had reached a deal that includes the agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions within two months.

Musaad bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, Saudi Arabia’s minister of state, member of the Council of Ministers, and national security adviser, led the Saudi delegation, and Admiral Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, led the Iranian delegation during talks in Beijing from March 6 to 10, according to a trilateral statement issued by China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

Ukraine approves anti-corruption program for 2023-2025

0

The Ukrainian government has approved the State Anti-Corruption Program for 2023-2025, state media reported.

The programme envisages that Ukrainian ministries, executive authorities, state enterprises, and other government agencies will have to report on the implementation of anti-corruption measures to the National Agency on Corruption Prevention, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported on Tuesday.

The anti-corruption initiative is a part of the Anti-Corruption Strategy for 2021-2025, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Ukrainian government said in a statement that the programme will result in the introduction of new corporate governance standards in public sector entities, and will enhance public control over the activities of business entities partially owned by a government.

The adoption of measures to reduce corruption is one of the key tasks for Ukraine on the way to membership in the European Union.

UN continues to provide quake-related aid to Syria, Turkey

0

The UN continues to provide quake-related aid to Syria and Turkey, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

As of Tuesday, 787 trucks carrying aid provided by seven UN agencies have crossed into northwest Syria since the February 6 earthquakes, OCHA added on Tuesday.

In areas under government control, humanitarian organizations provided aid to more than 310,000 people in February and more than 140,000 people so far in March, primarily in the most affected governorates of Aleppo, Hama, and Lattakia, it said.

According to the Syrian Ministry of Education, more than 2,500 schools in Aleppo, Lattakia, Tartous, Hama, Homs, and Idlib have been damaged. Of these, more than 1,800 schools have reopened, while 129 schools are still currently being used as shelters, Xinhua news agency reported.

In Turkey, the UN and humanitarian partners continue to mobilize emergency teams and relief operations in support of the Turkish government’s response to the earthquakes. To date, OCHA and its partners have provided more than 46,000 tents and over 5.7 million food packages, as well as hot meals and hundreds of thousands of relief items, including mattresses, bedding, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits, said the office.

The World Health Organisation is coordinating 14 emergency medical teams on the ground, it said.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, nearly 2.7 million people in Turkey were displaced by the earthquakes. Millions in the country have lost their homes and livelihoods. They need life-saving aid to meet basic needs, OCHA added.

High-priority needs include shelter, food, water, sanitation, hygiene, health, nutrition, and psychosocial support, it said.

Funding for the humanitarian response is urgently needed. As of Tuesday, the $1 billion flash appeal for Turkey remains less than 14 percent funded.

2 separate incidents of assault in moving trains in UP

0

In two separate incidents that took place, passengers witnessed high drama in moving trains.

In the first incident on Tuesday, a train ticket examiner (TTE) was seen acting inappropriately, shoving and intimidating passengers on the train floor, in a video that went viral on social media on Tuesday evening.

In the video, a ticketless passenger allegedly confronted TTE for his misbehavior.

The TTE threatened to slap him and grabbed his shirt.

It was not clear, exactly on which train or when the incident took place, but the probe was immediately called by DRM Prayagraj, the Railway Protection Force of NCR and GRP of Agra division.

In the second incident, a TTE was allegedly assaulted by policemen inside an AC coach of Jammu-bound Archana Express on Tuesday afternoon, after the TTE asked a police officer, traveling in civil uniform, from Varanasi to either buy the ticket of the AC coach or disembark from the train.

Sandeep Singh, who is a chief ticket inspector (CTI), said, “I was assaulted inside the A2 (AC2) coach after the train reached Pratapgarh railway station at around 3.30 p.m.”

He added, “I was checking the tickets of the passenger when I came across a ticketless passenger inside the A2 coach. I asked him to pay for the ticket and the passenger replied that he is a constable. I again asked him to either pay for the ticket or alight from the train following which he engaged in a heated argument and threatened me with dire consequences once the train reached Pratapgarh. The passenger was traveling from Varanasi junction.”

“Meanwhile I received a distress emergency call from a 77-year-old woman passenger who was unwell. I left the ticketless passenger and went to attend to the woman. I alerted Pratapgarh station to be on standby for a patient. I was with the woman passenger till the train reached Pratapgarh. As soon as the train halted, some men in uniform boarded the A2 coach and came toward me along with the ticketless cop. After a brief talk which lasted less than 30 seconds, they started assaulting me. The train passengers were witnesses of the attack,” he said.

He alleged that the train which has a five-minute halt at Pratapgarh did not receive a green signal until the unruly police officer alighted from the train.

After the incident, Sandeep made a distress call to railways control, following which policemen from GRP and RPF came to take his statement at the Amethi railway station.

“I’ll identify the cops if they are paraded in front of me for identification,” said Sandeep.

Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, the circle officer of Lucknow division GRP, said, “By the time SHO, GRP, Pratapgarh, could reach A2 coach, the train had departed. Prima facie it has been found that TTE was indeed assaulted. I have instructed GRP Lucknow to lodge an FIR as soon as they receive a copy of the written complaint from Sandeep Singh.”

“If the involvement of GRP is found in the incident, then no cop would be spared,” Sinha added.

CPRO, NER, Pankaj Kumar said, “Considering such unruly behavior of policemen who travel without ticket in trains and then misbehave with TTE, we have written to GRP to take appropriate against all cops whether civil police or railway police in case they don’t follow railway rules while traveling in train.”

Student groups protest at TSPSC office over exam paper leak

Student and youth wings of various opposition parties in Telangana on Tuesday tried to lay siege to the office of the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) to protest over the leakage of the question paper.

Tension prevailed at the TSPSC office in the Nampally area here when workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) barged into the premises by scaling the boundary wall.

The protesters damaged the TSPSC Board. Police had a tough time controlling the protesters.

Carrying BJYM flags and raising slogans, the protesters clashed with the policemen who had erected barricades.

Demanding the suspension of the TSPSC chairman and secretary, activists of the youth wing of Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) also staged a protest. Police detained the protesters who tried to barge into office premises and shifted them to a police station.

The protesters also demanded a thorough investigation into all exams held by TSPSC in the recent past. They demanded stringent action against those involved in paper leakage.

The BJYM leaders alleged that the government is playing with the lives of the unemployed by failing to check paper leakage.

Student groups also staged protests at Osmania University, demanding action against the TSPSC chairman.

Hyderabad Police on Monday arrested nine persons, including two employees of TSPSC and a police constable for leakage of question paper of the examination conducted for recruitment to the posts of Assistant Engineer in various departments.

The TSPSC conducted the examination on March 5 for 833 vacancies of Assistant Engineer, Municipal Assistant Engineer, Technical Officer, and Junior Technical Officer in various engineering departments. A total of 55,000 candidates had written the exam.

As the two employees TSPSC allegedly copied folders containing the question papers of various exams from computers in the confidential section, the Commission already postponed recruitment examinations to posts of Town Planning Building Overseer scheduled on March 12 and Veterinary Assistant Surgeon scheduled to be held on March 15 and 16.

The Commission is scheduled to meet later in the day to take a decision on canceling the exam held on March 5 and conduct a re-exam.

Stalin urges PM to intervene in release of 16 fishermen from TN in Lankan custody

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the release of 16 fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In a letter to the Prime Minister on Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister requested him to initiate diplomatic steps to ensure the release of the fishermen.

“This is the third incident of attack/arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan nationals/Navy within a month and as you are aware, these fishermen are solely dependent on their fishing activity for livelihood and such frequent incidents shatter the livelihood of poor fishermen and also create a fear psychosis in the minds of poor fishermen from Tamil Nadu.”

He said that 102 fishing boats are in the custody of the Sri Lankan Navy as of the date and added that six fishing boats that were released by Sri Lanka are yet to be repatriated to India. Stalin, in the letter, requested the Prime Minister to initiate “necessary diplomatic steps to secure the early release of all 16 fishermen and 102 fishing boats that were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy.”

The Chief Minister also recalled his earlier letters addressed to the Union External Affairs minister who had taken up the matter with the Sri Lanka government and despite all the efforts such incidents are continuing.

IND vs AUS: Hardik can be an impact player as well as game changer in middle order, says Gavaskar

0

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be an impact player as well as a game-changer for India in the middle order during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.

Following an emphatic Border-Gavaskar Trophy which ensured the Rohit Sharma-led side retain the title with a 2-1 series win, the action now shifts to the ODIs as India and Australia square play series opener on Friday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The hosts will miss the services of the ‘Hitman’, who has given the first ODI a miss due to family commitments. Hardik Pandya, the regular vice-captain, will lead the side, as India aims to continue their dominance at home and set the right momentum with 2023 also being the year for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Ahead of the series, Gavaskar lavished high praise for Pandya’s leadership capabilities.

“What you see with Hardik Pandya as a captain is a sense of comfort with the rest of the team. Maybe, it’s the way he handles the players, puts his arm around the players He just seems to give the players a sense of comfort. That’s so important to give a player a sense of comfort so that he can go and play his natural game. I think he encourages them, which is a wonderful sign.

Of course, the fact that he can be an impact player as well as a game changer in the middle order. Even for the Gujarat team, he was promoting himself up the order knowing that this is the time when the team needed some momentum and push, and he would do that,” the batting legend said on Star Sports show ‘Game Plan’.

So, someone who is prepared to take on responsibility, lead from the front, and will not ask the players to do something that he wants to do himself, is highly crucial. So, when the players know that he’s just not putting us over there because he doesn’t want to be there, that he’s gone through the fire and he wants us to go through the fire. So, that’s the key as far as Hardik Pandya is concerned. He has been an impressive captain.

“I have been very impressed with his captaincy at the T20 level for the Gujarat Titans and for India when he is captaining the T20 side. I do believe that if he wins the first game in Mumbai, then you can almost stamp him as the India captain once the World Cup is over in 2023,” he added.

Meanwhile, former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar had no doubts that once Rohit Sharma links up with the team for the remaining two ODIs, he will continue to show his batting prowess.

“His record speaks for itself. You do not need to say anything about Rohit’s performance in white-ball cricket. He has taken a slightly different approach at times, trying to be the aggressor at the top of the order. Maybe, he changed it a little bit in the last series, giving himself a little more time and getting the hundred. I just hope he plays every game that India plays from now on, every one day, because you want your captain out there to just have a pattern of play,” Agarkar said.

“He is missing the first one due to personal reasons. From thereon, you will not have enough one-days to formulate your plans. You want Rohit out there, as physically demanding as it can be for the captain, you want him not to miss any games. With regards to his batting, I do not think there are any issues,” he added.

IND vs AUS: ‘That was eating me up a lot’, Kohli opens up to Dravid about his century drought

0

Former India captain Virat Kohli admitted that he was distressed for not being able to get big scores for the team in Test cricket over the last three years, adding that he was yearning to get to the three-figure mark.

The star batter broke his century drought in Test cricket in Ahmedabad Test, scoring 186 runs off 364 deliveries, his first century in the format since November 2019 and 28th in the longest format of the game. The century in Ahmedabad came after a gap of 41 innings from his last century that came against Bangladesh in November 2019.

In conversation with head coach Rahul Dravid, the former captain revealed what was going through his mind when he wasn’t scoring a hundred.

“To be honest, I let the complications grow on me a little bit because of my own shortcomings. The desperation to get that three-figure mark is something that can grow on you as a batsman. We have all experienced that at some stage or the other. I let that happen to me to a certain extent,” Kohli said in a video posted on bcci.tv.

“The flip side to it is I am not a guy who is happy with 40 and 45s. I’ve always been someone who takes a lot of pride in performing for the team. It’s not like Virat Kohli should stand out. When I am batting on 40, I know I can get a 150 here and that will help my team.”

That was eating me up a lot. Why am I not able to get that big score for the team? I always took pride in the fact that when the team needed me, I would step up and perform in different conditions in difficult situations. The fact that I wasn’t able to do that was something that was bothering me,” he added.

The right-hander further said that for him centuries are just a part of the process of getting as many runs as possible for the team adding that achieving milestones was never his focus.

Kohli now has 75 international tons across three international formats and sits second on the list of batters with the most international hundreds.

“I never played for milestones. A lot of people ask me – how do you keep scoring hundreds? I always told them that a hundred is something that happens along the way within my goal, which is to bat as long as possible for the team and get as many runs as possible for the team. So, the milestone is never my focus.

It was never about the milestones. A lot of people ask me, ‘how do you keep scoring those hundreds’. And I always say a hundred is something that happens along the way within my goal, which is to bat as long as possible for my team,” he said.

But yeah, if I have to be brutally honest, it does become a little difficult as the moment you step out of the hotel room, right from the guy outside, to the guy in the lift, the bus driver everyone is saying ‘we want a hundred’. So, it does play on your mind all the time but that’s also the beauty of playing for so long to have these complications come up and overcome these challenges,” he added.

The 35-year-old also feels that the hundred came at the right time, just before the WTC final, which is scheduled to take place at the Oval on June 7.

“I am happy that it happened at the right time, before the World Test Championship final. I’ll definitely be going there as a very relaxed and very excited man,” Kohli said.

Covid-19 can cause ‘face blindness’: Study

0

Covid-19 can cause difficulty recognizing faces and navigational problems, according to a new study.

The study, published in the journal Cortex, is the first to report “prosopagnosia,” also known as face blindness, following symptoms consistent with Covid.

Previously it was known that Covid can cause a range of neurological problems, including the loss of smell and taste, and impairments in attention, memory, speech, and language, known as “brain fog”.

In the paper, researchers at Dartmouth College in the US, describe the case study of Annie — a 28-year-old customer service representative and a part-time portrait artist.

Annie was diagnosed with Covid in March 2020 and suffered a symptom relapse two months later. Shortly after the relapse, she noticed difficulty with face recognition and navigation.

“When I first met Annie, she told me that she was unable to recognize the faces of her family,” said lead author Marie-Luise Kieseler, a graduate student in the department of psychological and brain sciences and member of the Social Perception Lab at Dartmouth.

Annie now relies on voices to recognize people that she knows. She also experienced navigational deficits after having Covid.

“The combination of prosopagnosia and navigational deficits that Annie had is something that caught our attention because the two deficits often go hand in hand after somebody either has had brain damage or developmental deficits,” said senior author Brad Duchaine, Professor of psychological and brain sciences and principal investigator of the Social Perception Lab at Dartmouth.

“That co-occurrence is probably due to the two abilities depending on neighboring brain regions in the temporal lobe.”

To determine if other people have experienced similar problems due to long Covid, the team obtained self-reported data from 54 individuals who had long Covid with symptoms for 12 weeks or more; and 32 persons who had reported that they had fully recovered from Covid-19.

“Most respondents with long Covid reported that their cognitive and perceptual abilities had decreased since they had Covid, which was not surprising, but what was really fascinating was how many respondents reported deficits,” Kieseler said.

“One of the challenges that many respondents reported was a difficulty with visualizing family and friends, which is something that we often hear from prosopagnosics,” Duchaine.

“Our study highlights the sorts of perceptual problems with face recognition and navigation that can be caused by Covid-19 — it’s something that people should be aware of, especially physicians and other healthcare professionals,” Duchaine noted.

Speechless ‘Naatu Naatu’ singers have their fanboy moment with Rihanna

Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, singers of the Oscar-winning ‘Naatu Naatu’, were on cloud nine after meeting Rihanna on the sidelines of the 95th Academy Awards.

Kaala Bhairava shared a picture taken with the nine-time Grammy Award winner. Rahul Sipligunj and choreographer Prem Rakshith are also seen posing with the superstar singer.

“I was short of words when this happened. An artiste I always looked up to and admired deeply! My inspiration, the queen Rihanna,” he tweeted.

“Wanted to tell her how much I love ‘Stay’ and that I must’ve listened to it a million times. This memory is going to ‘stay’ in my heart forever,” he wrote.

Kaala Bhairava further wrote that the ‘Naatu Naatu’ team was literally spellbound when Rihanna performed last night.

The Barbadian singer performed her Oscar-nominated song ‘Lift Me Up’ from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ at the awards gala.

Rihanna, who is expecting her second child, showed off her baby bump through a black sheer cut-out gown.

Meanwhile, Rahul Sipligunj also shared a picture taken separately with Rihanna.

“Wow! Met the most amazing lady with a very beautiful heart. Still in shock of seeing your humility, Rihanna, and how down to earth you are! Thank you so much for calling and appreciating our performance and Oscar win. It’s an emotional moment for me!” Rahul tweeted with the hashtag #mydreamcometrue.
