Indian Wells: Swiatek holds off Andreescu, to face Raducanu in Round of 16

0

World No 1 Iga Swiatek narrowly escaped Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 7-6 (1) to reach the Round of 16 at Indian Wells Masters in breezy, heavy conditions, here.

After playing a terrific match, Andreescu couldn’t contain Swiatek in the tiebreak, losing seven of eight points on Monday night.

“She changed the rhythm pretty well and with this surface, it can get tough. But I’m pretty happy I was solid most of the time, at least. And that I could be recomposed in the tiebreaker because I really knew that I could get my focus up. I’m even glad that I got a chance to kind of play under pressure some more and see how I’m going to cope with it,” Swiatek was quoted as saying by WTA.

“I feel like the vibe is similar to the US Open, so, yeah, for sure playing under pressure it’s tough,” she added.

Swiatek is the only player yet to play a three-set match this year (minimum 15 played) and has ripped off a tour-leading 14 straight-set victories. Moreover, since the beginning of 2022, she’s won the most matches in straight sets (25) — eight more than the next player, Jessica Pegula.

The difference, as usual, could be seen in the crucible of breakpoints. Swiatek converted five of eight, while Andreescu converted one fewer. Swiatek, now 2-0 against Andreescu, is still on track to become the first woman to defend the title here at Indian Wells since Martina Navratilova in 1991.

This is already Swiatek’s 13th trip to the Round of 16 at a WTA Tour 1000. Since 2009, only three other players — Caroline Wozniacki (23), Victoria Azarenka (15), and Agnieszka Radwanska (14) — accomplished that before turning 22 years old.

In a flurry, Andreescu won that 2019 title here, then the Toronto 1000 and the US Open. She was 19 years old. Since then, dogged by a variety of injuries, it has been a slog. She’s 6-6 for the year and looking for a spark. This match, despite the result, might have been the thing she was looking for.

The 21-year-old Swiatek now meets 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in a Wednesday matchup between two more Grand Slam singles champions. The unseeded Brit knocked off No.13 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 third-round match.

The win also puts Raducanu into the last 16 of any WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career. She lost in the third round of three of these events a year ago, including in Indian Wells.

Notably, Swiatek won their only previous match, last year in Stuttgart.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be ready tactically. Honestly, my goal is to approach every match the same way. I’m pretty sure I got into the rhythm already, so I’m hoping I’m going to play better and better, ” Swiatek said about her clash with Raducanu.

WhatsApp rolling out profile icons within group chats on Android beta

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature on Android beta that will display profile icons within group chats.

Users have to open a group chat to find out if the feature is available for their WhatsApp account, reports WABetaInfo.

This feature will help users to better identify group members by showing profile icons, making it easier to involve in group conversations.

It is useful when group members share similar names or do not have a profile picture.

The default empty profile photo appears if a profile photo is unavailable or hidden due to privacy settings and it is highlighted using the same color as the contact name.

The new feature is available for some beta testers after installing the latest update of WhatsApp beta for Android on the Play Store, and it is expected to roll out to more users over the coming weeks, the report said.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the messaging platform was rolling out a new feature on Android beta which will allow users to report status updates.

After the award, it’s party time for ‘RRR’ team, courtesy Rajamouli

Post the awards ceremony, it is usually time to celebrate. And that is exactly what the RRR team did at director S.S. Rajamouli’s Los Angeles home on Monday.

Fresh from their win at the 95th Oscar Awards presentations, the ‘RRR’ team let the good times flow.

Pictures and videos from the after-event party show the cast and crew enjoying the hospitality of the director, who just can’t seem to stop grinning for a moment.

Actor Ram Charan’s wife Upasana took to her social media handles to share some of the magic moments at the after-event party. Needless to say, the pictures and videos are being lapped up by ‘RRR’ fans.

One of the videos has an ecstatic Keeravani playing the piano with the cast and crew listening in enthusiastically.

In another video clip, actor Ram Charan is seen striking a pose with the Oscar and all the other awards that ‘RRR’ has won so far.

All in all, the Oscars are the culmination of a great Indian cinematic journey that began almost a year ago on March 24 with a fantastic box office performance, went on to win a Golden Globe award, and ended on a high note with an Oscar on March 13.

Oscar-winning ‘Elephant Whisperers’ shot at Theppakadu camp, oldest in Asia

The Oscar-winning short documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was shot in the Theppakadu Elephant Camp at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiri Mountains in Tamil Nadu.

The Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is the oldest elephant camp in Asia and was established 105 years back.

Situated on the banks of river Moyar, it presently has 28 elephants. A dedicated bunch of Mahouts is providing training and care to these elephants.

The director of the movie, Kartiki Gonsalves had stayed in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve for five long years to shoot the documentary and it paid off taking her to an Oscar victory.

The movie, which is 41 minutes duration, explores the tentative and precious bond between an orphaned elephant Raghu and his caretakers, a mahout couple, Bomman and Bellie.

The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, of which the Theppekadu Elephant camp is part, has a good population of the indigenous Kattunaykan tribes to which Bommie and Bellie belong.

The Theppakadu Elephant Camp rehabilitates rogue elephants that enter human habitations and enter into conflict with people. These elephants are given proper training at these camps and converted to Kumki elephants.

The elephants in the camp are also used to drive away problematic elephants that enter into human surroundings. Mahouts Kirumaran and Wasim have trained two rogue elephants Moorthy and Easwaran into good formidable animals that have become much gentler.

Moorthy had killed 22 people as a wild Tusker and has been captured and rehabilitated at the Theppakadu Camp. Kirumaran said that Moorthy is so gentle that he lets his grandchildren play with the elephant these days.

However, Wasim, the Mahout of Easwaran, sounded a word of caution and said that he had suffered injuries thrice while handling Easwaran.

‘Banking system is safe’: Biden reassures markets, people

0

US President Joe Biden on Monday attempted to reassure Americans that the banking system will hold up, media reports said.

“Thanks to the quick action of my administration over the past few days, Americans can have confidence that the banking system is safe.

“Your deposits will be there when you need them. Small businesses across the country that deposit accounts at these banks can breathe easier knowing they’ll be able to pay their workers and pay their bills. And their hardworking employees can breathe easier as well,” he said at the White House, The Guardian reported.

With many Americans still bitter over Washington’s assistance to large banks during the 2008 global financial crisis, Biden made a point in his speech of saying no bailout was happening under his watch.

“No losses and this is an important point, no losses will be borne by the taxpayers,” he said. “Let me repeat that: no losses will be borne by the taxpayers. Instead, the money will come from the fees that banks pay into the Deposit Insurance Fund.”

Biden also noted that “management of these banks will be fired”, and “investors in the banks will not be protected. They knowingly took a risk. And when the risk didn’t pay off, investors lose their money. That’s how capitalism works”.

The President has called for Congress to restore banking regulations first implemented after the 2008 financial crisis but rolled back by then President Donald Trump.

The 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act signed by President Barack Obama increased financial regulations on banks in the wake of the crisis, but in 2018, Trump eased those rules – which Biden said set the stage for the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, a New York-based institution that closed over the weekend, The Guardian reported.

“We must reduce the risk of this happening again,” Biden said. “During the Obama-Biden administration, we put in place tough requirements on banks, like Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, including the Dodd-Frank law, to make sure that the crisis we saw in 2008 would not happen again. Unfortunately, the last administration rolled back some of these requirements. I’m going to ask Congress and the banking regulators to strengthen the rules for banks to make it less likely this kind of bank failure would happen again, and to protect American jobs and small businesses.”

He also called for an investigation into how the two banks went down, The Guardian reported.

Lost in translation: Section of Kerala media muddles up Keeravani’s reference to Carpenters

Haste can sometimes create problems as a section of the Malayalam media ended up making up a major goof-up when translating the Oscar-winning music director M.M. Keeravani’s reference to Carpenters.

Keeravani, in his remarks from the dais after his name was announced as the winner, said that he grew up hearing the Carpenters, referring to the popular US pop duo of two siblings.

But in order to be first with the news, a few vernacular media outlets reported that Keeravani grew up hearing the sounds of a carpenter working on wood.

Social media went to town with this erroneous translation by a section of media.

H3N2 virus: Health experts call for masks, better hygiene & flu shot

0

Even as India is seeing a spurt in Influenza cases, caused by the H3N2 virus, health experts on Monday suggested people take precautionary measures such as the use of masks, and better hand hygiene, as well as an annual flu shot.

A total of 3,038 lab-confirmed cases of various subtypes of influenza including H3N2 have been reported till March 9 by the states, as per the latest data available on IDSP-IHIP (Integrated Health Information Platform).

This includes 1,245 cases in January, 1,307 in February, and 486 cases till March 9.

“In my opinion, for the time being, the government can again make masks mandatory at least in highly vulnerable zones like public transport, hospitals, airports, railway stations, and other public conveyances. People should avoid visiting crowded places, or wear a mask whenever in public,” Dr. Sunil Sekri, Associate Consultant – Internal Medicine, Max Hospital, Gurugram, told Media.

The respiratory virus “spreads through droplets, which means that the secretions can spread from person to person, and most people touch their nose and mouth at some point, or that secretions can remain on the fingers and when they shake hands with other people”, it can likely spread, said Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the Indian Medical Association’s National Covid-19 Task Force, making a case for the need of masks particularly in crowded indoor gatherings.

According to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), there has been a combination of respiratory viruses ranging from Covid-19 virus, swine flu (H1N1), H3N2, and the seasonal Victoria and Yamagata lineages of influenza B viruses in circulation.

H3N2 and H3N1 are both types of influenza A viruses, commonly known as the flu.

Some of the most common symptoms include prolonged fever, cough, running nose, & body pain. But in severe cases, people may also experience breathlessness and/or wheezing.

Meanwhile, the Covid infection has also reported a spike after four months as 524 daily Covid cases were reported on Sunday.

“For the last three years, we have learned how respiratory infections can be prevented. Because the infections go out and come in from the nose and mouth, you need to cover this area and that is masking. Proper masks are needed, particularly when you are in crowded places,” said Dr. Iswar Gilada, an infectious disease expert.

“Masking is important, particularly for those who are both with comorbidities and the family members of those who are having such kind of people at their home,” he said.

The experts also suggested people wash their hands before eating or utilizing any public transit with soap or sanitizer to minimise the risk of infection.

Another thing is flu shots, which need to be taken annually to help boost immunity. It is because “a vaccine that you took last year might not necessarily cover the influenza virus that’s going to come next year or the year after. It will give you some baseline protection but it may not give you the best protection”, Dr. Jayadevan told Media.

Meanwhile, the experts also stated that antibiotics should be avoided in treating the flu as it works only against bacteria and not viruses.

“Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like influenza or Covid-19. Antibiotics are designed to target and kill bacteria, not viruses. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed if a bacterial infection is suspected or if there is a secondary bacterial infection, such as pneumonia, that develops as a result of a viral illness,” Dr. Laxman Jessani, Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, told Media.

“However, it is important to use antibiotics judiciously and only when they are truly necessary to help prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria,” Jessani added.

Hemlata is a complicated character to play: Ratna Pathak Shah on ‘Happy Family…’

Veteran actress and director Ratna Pathak Shah, who is remembered for playing snobbish socialite woman Maya Sarabhai in the popular sitcom ‘Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai’, is happy to collaborate with Jamnadas Majethia and Aatish Kapadia again for the web series ‘Happy Family: Conditions Apply’.

However, she said that this time her character Hemlata is going to be completely different from Maya Sarabhai.

She shared: “Hemlata is a complicated character to play, it’s not easy as Maya Sarabhai, it’s also not one dimensional so it definitely was a challenge, when Atish narrated and as the episode progressed the character too was having a good graph, both characters of Hemlata and Maya are outspoken in their own completely different ways, And I hope this character works out she is not smooth but yet she is charming.”

The 65-year-old actress has done theatre, films, and TV. She has been part of several well-known Hindi and English plays. She has also been part of the romantic comedy ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa, the action comedy ‘Golmaal 3’, the family drama ‘Kapoor & Sons, the black-comedy ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, romantic comedy, ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’, among others.

She added further about being part of this web series and working with Jamnadas Majethia (JD) and Aatish Kapadia.

“This series is a rather unusual concept where you’re swinging from something pretty serious and valuable socially to something absolutely ridiculous and this constant swinging keeps happening. Aatish is much more assured as a writer as well as a director and he’s much more willing to take risks and experiment more. JD has also grown greatly as a producer. His confidence and his ability to keep a team going and keep them happy together have also grown manifold,” she added.

‘Happy Family: Conditions Apply’ is a story of four generations and shows how in joint families there is a conflict between modern and traditional values and how dysfunctional they are at certain times.

The series stars an ensemble cast comprising Ratna Pathak Shah, Raj Babbar, Atul Kulkarni, Ayesha Julka, Raunaq Kamdar, Meenal Sahu, Sanah Kapur, and Ahaan Saboo in pivotal roles. It is created by Jamnadas Majethia and Aatish Kapadia, under the banner Hats Off Productions.

The first four episodes are streaming now on Prime Video, followed by two new episodes released until March 31.

4th Test: We wouldn’t be the same or lethal enough without the other, says Ashwin on partnership with Jadeja

0

India’s spin twins –Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja — were on Monday adjudged as joint Player of the Series after India’s 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph for the hosts.

Off-spinner Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker in the series, with 25 wickets in four matches, including a six-fer in Ahmedabad. Left-arm spinner Jadeja, who made his comeback into competitive cricket, took 22 wickets. The duo has constantly run through visiting teams on Indian pitches for well over a decade now.

“It has been a great journey. We (himself and Jadeja) started a long time ago but we wouldn’t be the same or lethal enough without the other. We need to recognize that, at least I have started recognizing that over the last 2-3 years.”

“He gives me a lot of freedom to be creative with the ball, credit to him, I thought he bowled beautifully in the Delhi Test as well and that’s why we are here today. Jaddu keeps it really simple, he does not fret around or bother about what has happened,” said Ashwin in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Jadeja also had words of praise for Ashwin. “It feels good bowling with him. He (Ashwin) is passing on information. What field to have, how to bowl to a particular batsman. He is more of everything (either scientist or a bowler). He has a good cricketing brain. He knows every team in the world and every series that is being played.”

Ashwin also recounted seeing Jadeja being sad after chipping a drive straight to mid-on in Ahmedabad. “But I saw him sit in one place for an hour after he got out, so that told me how disappointed he was, and that came out today.”

Jadeja, too, expressed that he would like to get better with the bat in the future. “I am not too happy with my batting in this series. I missed out on a few occasions, especially on this Test. I will work harder and focus on my batting.”

Asked about the conversation he has with Jadeja while bowling in tandem, Ashwin revealed, “The conversations have been a lot more in the last 2-3 years because I know how to communicate and what are his likes, his dislikes and even knowing what will help him.”

“Even he has adapted beautifully to the chop and change, during the series when Head was going, Khawaja was playing, we had a lot of good conversations and some of them ended up with wickets and some of them are quite funny.”

Freebies worth Rs 1 cr: That’s inside the goodie bag each Oscar nominee gets

All the nominees in the 2023 Oscar get a swag bag whether they win the Academy honors or not. The bag has a diverse array of goodies varying from small businesses to world-renowned brands.

A Los Angels based marketing company Distinctive Assets has been distributing gift bags to Oscar nominees since 2002 but is unaffiliated with the Academy.

The ‘Everyone wins’ gift bags are estimated to be worth a whopping $1,26,000 this year.

This year the bag has over 60 items and is filled with several beauty and lifestyle gifts, it has tickets for luxury vacations that include a $40,000 getaway to a Canadian estate named ‘The Lifestyle’. It also includes a stay for eight people including friends and relatives in an Italian lighthouse.

The gift also has a symbolic souvenir for a piece of land in Queensland, Australia.

The gift bag also includes a $25,000 coupon for project management and a home restoration fee from Maison construction. There are coupons for lipo arm sculpting, facelift, and hair restoration services.

There will be a Havaianas suitcase this year to deliver the gifts and 50 percent of the products reportedly come from companies that are women and minority-owned.

The gift packs will have skin care products from Miage, a silk pillowcase from Blush Silks, a travel pillow from PETA, and products from Ariadne Athens Skin Wellness, Daily Energy Cards, Kind Reason Co, Rarete Studios, ReFa, Proflexa, Oxygenetix, and many others.

The gift pack that comprises of least expensive gifts includes a pack of Clif Thins priced at $13.56 and an $18 loaf of Japanese milk bread from Ginza Nishikawa.

Even as the products and services in the bag come for free, the recipient will have to pay taxes for it as it is considered as income.

Interestingly the company Distinctive Assets had a direct confrontation with the Academy awards committee in 2016 when the gift bag had marijuana vape pens, sex toys, and a vampire breast lift. The Academy does not want to link with it and hence Distinctive Assets can no longer use the trademark of the Academy.

Another controversy of 2016 was that it included a gift hamper for a $55,000 vacation to Israel that come from the Israel tourism ministry and the travel company ExploreIsrael.com. Several organizations came out against this which include Jewish Voice For Peace, and the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.

It may be noted that the 2020 gift bag is rated as the most expensive and is estimated at $225,000. The gifts included a 24K gold Royal Charka bath bomb, a 24K gold vape pen from Hollowtips, and a $20,000 one-year membership to a matchmaking service.

Shadab to lead Pakistan in Afghanistan T20Is; Babar Azam rested

0

All-rounder Shadab Khan will captain Pakistan in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday named a 15-man squad for the three-match T20I series in Sharjah, which is set to commence on March 24.

The board also named Mohammad Yousuf as the interim head and batting coach.

Key players like regular skipper Babar Azam along with Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been rested, while Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Mohammad Hasnain, and Khushdil Shah failed to find a place in the squad.

These nine players were part of the Pakistan squad that reached the final ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Shadab will lead the side that includes four uncapped players — Ihsanullah, Saim Ayub, Tayyab Tahir and Zaman Khan — while Abdullah Shafique, Azam Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Imad Wasim have been recalled in the squad.

“I want to congratulate Shadab Khan on his appointment as the Pakistan team captain for the series against Afghanistan. Shadab Khan has been the Pakistan vice-captain in white-ball cricket for the past couple of years. It is logical that he takes over the side in the absence of Babar Azam for the short three-match T20I tour of Sharjah,” said Najam Sethi, the chair of PCB’s Management Committee.

“For the short Sharjah tour and to ensure continuity, we have also appointed Mohammad Yousuf as the interim head and batting coach. Yousuf has been with the national side since last year as a batting coach and has also been working in the National High-Performance Centre,” he said.

Apart from Shadab, players retained from the last T20I series are Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Junior, Naseem Shah, and Shan Masood.

“For the short three-T20I series against Afghanistan, the selection committee has followed the standard rotation policy by resting the leading performers and providing high-performing domestic performers with opportunities to demonstrate their talent and potential at the international level. This will also allow us to test the temperament and abilities of these players and help us to strengthen our pool of players as we look forward to building and preparing a formidable side for next year’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States,” Haroon Rashid, the Chair of the PCB selection committee.

“Babar, Fakhar, Haris, Rizwan, and Shaheen have been provided breaks from the short Sharjah trip to allow them to switch off from competitive cricket so that they can complete their rehabilitations, regroup, recompose and recharge their batteries and be fully fit for the challenges in the tough and challenging 2023-24 season,” he added.

Pakistan squad: Shadab Khan (C), Abdullah Shafique, Azam Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Ihsanullah, Imad Wasim, Muhammad Haris, Muhammad Nawaz, Muhammad Wasim jr, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shan Masood, Tayyab Tahir, Zaman Khan.

Reserve players: Abrar Ahmed, Haseebullah Khan, and Osama Mir.

Scientists call for finding future viral threats to human health

0

There is an urgent need to build a framework that can help identify likely future viral threats to human health, before the next outbreak takes the world by surprise, according to scientists.

Writing in a Perspective article in the journal Science, two virologists from the Universities of the Ohio State and Colorado, said the scientific community should invest in a four-part research framework to proactively identify animal viruses that might infect humans.

“We are continually going to be exposed to the viruses of animals. Things are never going to change if we stay on the same trajectory,” said Cody Warren, Assistant Professor of Veterinary Biosciences at The Ohio State University.

Instead of just “sequencing viruses in nature”, “experimental studies of animal viruses are going to be invaluable,” Warren said.

Along with Sara Sawyer, professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology at the University of Colorado Boulder, he proposed a series of experiments to assess an animal virus’s potential to infect a human.

While it can be difficult to pick an animal virus and prioritise it for further study, Warren and Sawyer suggest, to look into “repeat offender” viral families currently infecting mammals and birds.

Those include coronaviruses, orthomyxoviruses (influenza) and filoviruses (causing hemorrhagic diseases like Ebola and Marburg). In 2018, the Bombali virus — a new ebola virus — was detected in bats in Sierra Leone, but its potential to infect humans remains unknown.

And then there are arteriviruses, such as the simian hemorrhagic fever virus that exists in wild African monkeys, which Sawyer and Warren recently determined has decent potential to spill over to humans because it can replicate in human cells and subvert immune cellsa ability to fight back.

The 2020 worldwide lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19 is still a fresh and painful memory, but Warren notes that the terrible outcomes of the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 could have been much worse. The availability of vaccines within a year of that lockdown was possible only because scientists had spent decades studying coronaviruses and knew how to attack them.

“So if we invest in studying animal viruses early and understand their biology in more detail, then in the case that they were to emerge in humans later, we’d be better poised to combat them,” Warren said.

Oscars 2023: Shantanu-Nikhil outfit for Ram Charan; Upasana’s silk made with recycled scrap

Tollywood star Ram Charan and his wife Upasana, who attended the Oscar presentations and witnessed the momentous occasion, caught the eye, dressed to the hilt in Indian sartorial elegance.

In a reflection of his character in ‘RRR’, Ram Charan came outfitted in an ensemble from Shantanu & Nikhil styled by Nikita Jaisinghani.

“Ram is playing the character of a fighter, who empowers the ones in need, and stands strong for his beliefs. The ensemble has military nuances, which have always been the signature of Shantanu & Nikhil’s ethos. The bandhgala has customized Chakra button, and medallion-inspired brooches, layered over the classic S&N feminine drape kurta with a gender fluid twist that celebrates the new India and goes beyond borders, the designers elaborated.

The event also had Upasana Kamineni Konidela in attendance with her husband Ram Charan to support and cheer Team RRR’s nomination at the Oscars. She was elegantly attired in a sustainable customized ivory silk saree made using hand-woven silk, of spun fabric, created from recycled scraps, designed by Hyderabad-based designer, Jayanti Reddy.

On RRR’s historic win at the Oscars, Upasana Kamineni Konidela said: “We are immensely proud to represent India in this glorious win at the Oscars. It has been a long time coming and is a testament to all the hard work that the RRR team has put in, as well as a tribute to Indian talent worldwide. Here’s for you India!”
